00:00Hey everyone, welcome back to Nintendo Treehouse Live at E3.
00:02I'm Rob, here with my colleagues Sam and other Rob and Scott,
00:06and also joined by the game's developer Motokura-san and Koizumi-san, the producer.
00:12We're talking about Mario Odyssey again, I guess that should be obvious from the big board.
00:15And I had a little trouble playing and talking yesterday,
00:18so Motokura-san has graciously offered to show me how it's done.
00:28Alright, let's take a look at the Sand Kingdom at night here.
00:34So let's take a good look around.
00:38Oh, and then there's Oasis there in the distance.
00:42Let's go into town.
00:47Doing long jumps, dives, lots of different actions.
00:57Just as you can see, the whole town's frozen and Mario is shivering himself.
01:02It's worth mentioning that there are costumes in the game that will make Mario not shiver in the cold
01:06because they're warm enough.
01:10So we've got a seed here.
01:15While you're holding the seed, you can't throw your hat.
01:22Okay, let's try planting it in this pot.
01:26Alright, we've got a bud there.
01:28That seems like the thing to do.
01:35So you think there's somewhere else there might be a seed?
01:37Well, seeing the two pots, there must be two other seeds hidden somewhere nearby, I'd assume.
01:41Actually, the Oasis might not be a bad place to check because there are things growing there.
01:44Maybe something dropped a seed.
01:45Seeds come from plants.
01:47That's how Oasis is in the Yorizo is there.
01:52That's right, let's head there.
01:57Oh, careful!
01:59The night of the forest is dangerous.
02:01Yeah, that's not too dangerous at night.
02:04Yeah, these guys can really catch up on you because they just swarm.
02:07If you're not paying attention to what's going on around you,
02:09you could actually have quite a collection of them sneaking up behind you before you even realize it.
02:12You might hear the noise, but if you're focused on something else, you might not catch it.
02:15And you just never stop.
02:21Oh, I like this one.
02:23What's this?
02:25Oh, no.
02:26Poor Lakitu was just fishing and he got trapped in the ice.
02:29Wrong place, wrong time.
02:31It looks pretty cold.
02:35Okay, let's see if we can find a seed.
02:41I can't see one.
02:44I wonder if we can take a step on that ice for a moment, though, just to appreciate how it
02:47looks with the...
02:48There's some stuff embedded in there as well.
02:50Ah, just to go into the ice.
02:54Let's go into the ice.
02:55Let's go into the ice.
02:56Let's go into the ice.
02:56Oh, yeah, you slide.
02:58In this place, there are coins in this country, but it's cold, so you can't get it.
03:04And as you can see, there are some local coins in there, but with the water frozen, you can't get
03:08to them right now.
03:09Yeah.
03:10Hey, this came up yesterday.
03:11Are the coins here upside down triangles because of the inverted pyramid?
03:31Yeah, it's probably based off that, as you can see there, the inverted pyramid, it's probably based off that motif.
03:36And there's something cool on top of that tree there.
03:43So let's try getting this item.
03:46Oh, careful.
03:48Oh, yeah, they're super delicate to walk on.
03:53So you gotta get them all within the time limit, or...
03:57Oh, close.
03:58Of course.
03:58Well, there are some kind of difficult gameplay elements sometimes, like that.
04:09I'll introduce a little bit of a mode for you to say Nintendo Switch.
04:13If you like Nintendo Switch, you will be more of a game changer.
04:20But since that was kind of hard, well, there's actually a special move we can do on the Nintendo Switch,
04:24which might make it a bit easier.
04:25So maybe we'll try it out right now.
04:27Sounds great.
04:27All right.
04:28Yeah, what is it?
04:29Oh, thank you.
04:31Time to share the joy.
04:33All right.
04:33Oh, does this mean I get to wear the extra hat?
04:35Oh.
04:45Okay.
04:47Okay.
04:47Perfect.
04:47Thank you.
04:48So, can I throw the extra hat on now?
04:50Yes!
04:52I've had my eye on these.
04:54They look so cool.
04:55All right.
04:55I'm gonna get dressed for business here.
04:57Nice.
04:58Ready.
04:59Ready to save Peach.
05:01So what inspired you to add two-player simultaneous to this game, Motukura-san?
05:20So, we wanted to have this co-op mode that would make good use of the Nintendo Switch controllers since,
05:25you know, it comes with two of them.
05:26And actually, if we hop back down to the ground for a moment, before we try the music puzzle, I
05:30just want to talk for a second about the motion control.
05:31Ah, just to let me know about the motion control.
05:37Yes.
05:39Perfect.
05:39So, if we stay still here, folks will see the guide on the screen here.
05:43So, our controls are quite different.
05:44So, right now, I'm controlling Kevi, and Motukura-san is controlling Mario.
05:50I'll pop those up here.
05:53Ah, there we go.
05:54So, you can see here, our controls are quite different, and we all have quite a range of movement.
05:59So, Mario's got his traditional running and jumping abilities.
06:02He also has the ability to control the camera.
06:03He can't throw me without doing something special, which I'm not sure we're going to show here.
06:07But I have the ability to move Cappy and also look around and use the camera.
06:12And here, I have full range of movement.
06:15I can just fly wherever my little hattie heart desires.
06:19And I think, maybe get Kevi very dizzy.
06:25All right, should we try that puzzle again?
06:28What do you guys want to say?
06:34All right, let's take a look at that music note challenge that didn't work too well before.
06:40So, I wonder, while we're giving this a go, I don't know that a hat has ever been a player
06:44character before.
06:45How was it for you designing the control scheme for the hat?
06:49Oh, let's do it!
06:51Whoop, whoop, okay.
06:53Almost got him.
06:54All right, let's go.
06:55Oh, no, closer!
06:58I'm too low!
06:59I'm too low!
07:00I'm too low!
07:01Oh!
07:03Yes!
07:03Just barely under the wire.
07:05Oh, that's good.
07:05All right.
07:06But one thing that's kind of different about Cappy here, he can't actually collect the moon.
07:11I can just bounce around it, so Mario has to be there to finish the job.
07:20So, it looks like there wasn't a seed here after all.
07:25So, maybe we'll go try out in every location.
07:29So, one thing that's handy about Cappy here, he's invincible.
07:32So, I can actually protect Mario as he's running around pretty nicely.
07:37As long as I'm feeling generous.
07:39So, they don't fly off of the distance.
07:46Oh, no, here's the enemies from before.
07:50You stay away from Mario!
07:52No!
07:52Nope.
07:55And this is actually a really great way for...
07:58Just to play with maybe a friend who's not sure they want to try the full game yet.
08:02You say, hey, you know, try being Cappy for me and then decide if you want to be Mario.
08:05I think he's a good player.
08:07Oh, no!
08:08Come here, you guys.
08:09Give him a little.
08:10If you want to play with your friends and together, you can play with him.
08:15Yeah.
08:15Yeah.
08:15So, that was certainly intentional on our part.
08:27You know, when you throw Cappy, he's invincible.
08:30And so, we thought that would be a really good opportunity for people who aren't used to games to be
08:33able to play with someone else who's a little more advanced.
08:35Knowing they won't get hurt, it's easier for them to give it a try.
08:40And here we see that Cappy is the solution to the can't throw your hat while holding a seed problem.
08:45Seems like you spent a lot of time coming up with good ways to have teamwork in the game.
08:49How was the development process for that like?
08:53Ok, so there are lots of teams that would be interesting.
08:54Ok, so what's the development process for you have?
08:57Ok, so.
08:59Ok.
09:00Now, we're going to use the idea of this.
09:01So, we're going to use Mario in this situation.
09:05We're going to use the right now.
09:07We're going to use Mario in this situation.
09:09OK, so we're going to use to do this as a follow-on action.
09:15We're going to use some of these people, which will do the secret into the game.
09:21If we use Apache and her and my job, we can choose this.
09:21Yeah, it was a real natural evolution for us in the course of development because we knew that we wanted
09:25Mario to be able to throw something, and then we thought, well, he's always wearing a hat, so if he
09:29just throws his hat, that would be great.
09:31And once we got to that point, we realized that people could have more of an emotional attachment if it
09:35was also a character.
09:36And then, once we realized it was a character, he should be able to move around himself, and so the
09:41multiplayer element really just fell into place.
09:42Makes perfect sense.
09:45It is really fun just flying around as a magic, all-powerful, invincible hat.
09:51I'm sorry, it's so fun to poke these guys.
09:54You're really mean to them, though.
09:56It just looks so cute when their skull spins around.
09:59And we noticed there, too, that the seed that we planted at the beginning of the segment has grown quite
10:04a bit as well, so it might be worth coming back to that.
10:06Maybe not now, but later.
10:18So since we're able to play Buried at Second Seed now, there's another place I'd like to check out, so
10:25we're going to hop on this Jaxi.
10:28I love riding the Jaxi.
10:30It's so fun.
10:31It's just so fast and so dangerous.
10:34And, of course, I can still fly away, but I think I'm going to sit tight.
10:36Yeah.
10:37Sort of get lost.
10:39Good grief.
10:44I think we saw this on Treehouse Live yesterday as well.
10:48So I know, Motokura-san, one thing that you mentioned, I think maybe in an interview earlier, was that some
10:54of the world here was inspired by a trip you took to Mexico.
11:05Yeah.
11:16So, there were just so many, like, different wonderful and charming places there, and so many, you know, places that
11:22seemed like there'd be great opportunities for Mario-type actions to be used.
11:27Oh, and we're slippery here.
11:29I don't have to worry about that, because I don't have feet, but Mario's definitely going to get a problem.
11:33One of the things I find fascinating about this game is that when I'm playing in this area, I wish
11:36for there were Goombas, because Goomba's feet don't slip, and so in the hurry, I'm wishing for an enemy to
11:40use as a power-up.
11:42Oh, careful.
11:45All right, so we took a little look up above us earlier, and there's some goodies pretty high.
11:51Oh, careful.
11:51There we go.
11:53Nice.
11:56Let's see here.
11:58Come back, I'm jumping.
12:01And what's nice as well, since both of us have camera control, if one of us is doing a particularly
12:07complicated either series of jumps, or in Cappy's case, maybe trying to collect something really fast,
12:13if your partner is feeling generous, they can actually adjust the camera for you, so you don't even have to
12:17worry about that, and they'll just get a good angle for you to see.
12:20But teamwork's certainly important.
12:22You don't want to be fighting over the camera.
12:23No.
12:24No.
12:25Oh,危ない.
12:26Almost.
12:29Over here, this angle looks good.
12:31Nice.
12:32Nice.
12:33Almost.
12:35Nice.
12:38So, if we take a look over here, oh, look at all those, that is a sweet coinage.
12:44I definitely want to try and get over there.
12:46Okay, so I'm going to get myself in position here.
12:48Let me know if I need to adjust, though.
12:51Maybe just a little further?
12:53Oh, there.
12:54That's good.
12:54That's good.
12:55Oh, good luck.
12:57Oh, yeah!
13:00Yay!
13:00Yay!
13:01Oh!
13:01Multi-work!
13:02These stacks of coins are really satisfying.
13:04Yeah.
13:06We can die a whole bunch now and not worry about it.
13:08Now, for the record, that would be possible in single-player, but it's much easier in two-player with a
13:12cooperative friend.
13:14Definitely harder.
13:15All right, so there we're going over the head.
13:21So, should we head to the wooded stage, maybe?
13:24Oh, sure!
13:25Absolutely!
13:26Let's swap systems really quick.
13:28I'll return this to you.
13:29Okay, so.
13:31And there's some things in the Wooded Kingdom that we definitely wanted to get your guys' input and insight on,
13:36because there's some interesting stuff going on in the Wooded Kingdom.
13:39Yeah.
13:40All right, so let's get set up here.
13:42So we should be able to swap the feed over to the Wooded Kingdom, and we can hop into some
13:46gameplay there again.
13:50All right, here we go.
13:51So we are back in the Wooded Kingdom here, and one thing I think we definitely need to talk about
13:58with you guys is that T-Rex that we saw down in the deep wood.
14:03Can you tell us a little bit more about the inspiration for adding a T-Rex and tell our viewers
14:06a bit more about, you know, what came into bringing things like that into a Mario game?
14:28So, you know, the theme of this game is obviously surprises. So, you know, previously in Super Mario World, we
14:33had, you know, Dino Island, Dino Land, but we wanted to try for this game. You know, kind of a
14:38different design of Dinosaur.
14:39something we hadn't seen in a Mario game before.
14:52And, you know, I think, you know, maybe there are places on Earth where Dinosaur still exist, and maybe we
14:56just haven't found them yet.
14:58I'm going to keep my fingers crossed because if this is a Dinosaur, after playing this game, I want to
15:02put a hat on it and then take it for a little ride.
15:04We can be friends.
15:06Now, I've been curious for months about the sky here. Can you tell me about why it's this huge sort
15:12of sci-fi-looking sky? Are those real mountains near the side of it? Where are we? And what's going
15:18on here?
15:36So, this kingdom here, this land here is actually basically a giant green house, and it's where the flowers that
15:46will ultimately be used in the wedding ceremony.
15:48are being raised.
16:02I can't go into too many details, but basically every kingdom will have something within it that will be related
16:08to the wedding and some connection to that.
16:10At least I guess it's nice that Bowser is pulling out all the stops, sparing no expense.
16:16So, I'm going to hop up this way.
16:20And one thing that we haven't really shown, I mean, I think we've shown a little bit in some of
16:24our earlier demos, but swimming we haven't really shown in too much detail.
16:27There's a spot here where I can take a nice swim, but there's also another spot I want to visit,
16:31a different kind of environmental texture that I'm very excited about.
16:37I want to roll down, but I'm scared.
16:38Don't fall.
16:39There we go.
16:41See, daredevil is fun sometimes.
16:43Just see if you can do it.
16:44Come here, buddy.
16:46I've got to get my favorite again.
16:47Oh, no.
16:47Come here, bud.
16:48Yes.
16:49You always hurt the ones you love.
16:50Sorry, I think this is one of my favorite capture targets.
16:52I love the uproots.
16:54So, I'm going to take care of girls for all.
16:57So, we're actually going to head down this way.
17:01And I guess I want to keep this guy, but I also want to be safe, so I'm going to
17:04leave him here for now and head off to this little corner here.
17:07And we've got another little friend to meet.
17:10Fire, bro.
17:11I love this fire.
17:13Yeah, I know with the different environmental animations that you brought in and the different textures with a lot of
17:18very realistic
17:18fire and water.
17:19And just, I think, looking at the aesthetics overall of this series, can you tell us a little bit more
17:24about the kind of overall art direction concept that you guys had as you're working on this game?
17:29The human effects are quite good.
17:32I think the wind effects are quite nice and I don't worry about it.
17:34But you guys, please comment more about the art style.
17:40Yes.
17:42This is a game about Mario going on a big adventure and leaving the Mushroom Kingdom.
18:01We wanted to basically create a world that would bring out the same kind of emotions that you normally have
18:07when you visit a foreign land.
18:38looks fantastico,
18:39he really takes care of himself too,
18:40that shell is so shiny,
18:43and I do love that these guys
18:44have this cute little hop,
18:45they don't even walk,
18:46they just bounce at all.
18:47Which is true to the series,
18:49the Hammer brothers and cousins
18:50are always sort of hopping around.
18:52It's not even just an ax,
18:54they just do it because they love it.
18:55So I'm actually going to leave him here
18:57because I want to operate this switch,
18:59and much as it's fun
19:01throwing fireballs around,
19:02it's not really helping me in this case,
19:03so I'm going to leave him here.
19:06Get the switch here.
19:09And as we showed in an earlier segment,
19:10what I can actually do
19:11is grab my capture target back.
19:12He was just kind of sitting there
19:13recovering for a minute,
19:14so now that I've done what I need to do,
19:16I can hop my memory away this way.
19:18And this is actually a really nice
19:20high vantage point
19:21where we can take another look
19:22at where we were in our second segment.
19:25There's the brutal ship up there.
19:26All those.
19:27Hovering menacingly.
19:28Piranha plants keeping me problems.
19:30But there's a little ridge over here,
19:33and for this,
19:33I'm going to want to grab that club route.
19:36Hi, buddy.
19:37I didn't need to get you.
19:39Oh, I'm back with my uproot family here.
19:42So we're going to do a little bit
19:44careful platforming here.
19:46And this is definitely another case
19:48where you need the right capture target
19:51to complete a little puzzle.
19:54and yeah, he's up there.
19:56Got another one.
19:57Plants and fire don't mix.
19:59No, leave me alone.
20:01Please leave me alone.
20:02Did you bring an uproot
20:03to a Fire Brothers fight?
20:04I did, but that's okay.
20:06He's a little boss,
20:07and he's going to make it work.
20:08Here we go.
20:10So one thing I think
20:11that's really fascinating
20:12about this game,
20:13coming back to the kind of
20:14sandbox style
20:14that we had in 64 and Sunshine,
20:17is you guys had to create
20:18these really big, complex spaces
20:20that were densely packed
20:21with content
20:21and make sure that it all
20:23found fun
20:23and nothing felt kind of extraneous.
20:26Could you tell us a little bit
20:27about the process of
20:28developing spaces like that
20:29so that they're really fun
20:30and they work?
20:31Super Mario 64や
20:33Super Mario Sunshine
玄業.
22:29So, I'm going to head down this way, get a couple more coins, and this little pond, get them all.
22:39There we go.
22:40And can you catch some of the fish on the screen?
22:42Yeah, let me see those guys.
22:43I love there's realistic fish here in the world that also has cheap cheeps and stuff.
22:48Yeah, I feel like this might have been really confusing for Mario when he saw these things, like, you're not
22:51red, you're not shaped like beach balls.
22:53Do we even have eyes?
22:57But I know the first time I came in here and was just swimming around and following this pool of
23:01fish, I was so distracted by the space that I almost let Mario drown.
23:09I wonder, can you tell us a little bit more about the design work that went into things here, like,
23:13say, the water effects in the game?
23:15What do you think of this kind of beautiful water that you have to do with the game?
23:27So, you know, the main thing we focus on is the ability of the player when we're creating different environmental
23:33elements.
23:46And we wanted to make sure that there's also, you know, the things in the environment will affect the player,
23:50like, the sand and the Sand Kingdom can get on Mario, and then, obviously, in the water, you can get
23:55wet.
24:04And, you know, I think, you know, especially the responsiveness you can feel from the water as you swim from
24:08it is a very good example of creating that very kind of intuitive interaction between the player and the environment.
24:18And I think, you know, that's actually something that gets a bit better every day. It's probably even better than
24:23it was yesterday in the game.
24:24Yeah, it's really impressed me watching as new builds come in from you guys, just how much, I mean, love
24:29is really going into all the little details of this game and really bringing the environments to life.
24:33So, I think, I hope folks are really excited to see them when you guys have finished all the development
24:37work.
24:38Absolutely.
24:39All right, now I'm going to actually hop into this warp pipe that's been teasing us over here.
24:49And this space, as well, it's really interesting because it's partly swimming, it's a side-scrolling with the fuzzies, and...
24:56One of those fuzzies.
24:57Ah, also my altitude level.
25:01But it's almost like there's a little bit of a curve to the water on the front edge.
25:06All right.
25:12There we go.
25:13So, he's going to stay here.
25:15I do love, too, the kind of water effect on Mario's outfit after he's gotten into the water.
25:22Yeah.
25:23So slick.
25:24Let's get these guys.
25:26Okay, fuzzies, I need you to go.
25:29Wait for the next cycle.
25:33Okay.
25:36Go, go, go, go, go, go.
25:39Up, up, up, up.
25:40There we go.
25:41Okay.
25:46Okay, I need you guys to go.
25:48Oh, I missed it.
25:49All right.
25:50Oh, I'm hurt.
25:50Okay.
25:53Okay.
25:54No!
25:55No, I'm a little too high.
25:57All right, let's get that another go.
26:01All right.
26:07There.
26:09I didn't want those coins, though.
26:12Oh, this is our last Mario Odyssey segment for Treehouse Live this year.
26:16I'd like to just ask if Motokura-san and Koizumi-san, if you had any final comments for our viewers
26:21while Sam is playing through this segment.
26:22Any last words?
26:34All right, I'll start.
26:58I want to say that, you know, what we've been able to show you this time is just, you know,
27:01it's a very small portion of the game, and there's so many more surprises waiting for you.
27:06So many more, you know, places you'll be able to go and explore, so many more things you'll be able
27:10to throw your head out and control.
27:40There we go.
27:41And what we're going to say at E3 here is that Super Mario Odyssey on the Nintendo Switch is a
27:46game that you can play anytime, anywhere, with anyone, and I hope everyone enjoys looking for all of the discovery
27:52and surprise that the game has to offer.
27:54Thank you so much. It's been a real pleasure.
27:56Thank you. It really has.
27:58Thank you.
27:58Just going to hang out with my little buddy here.
27:59All right.
28:00Relax.
28:01And that's where we're going to wrap it up for this segment.
28:04So thanks for watching, everybody.
28:06Up next we have Splatoon 2 Turf War, and stay tuned.
28:11Ready for the snow, let's do the Odyssey.
