Gameplay dalla Nintendo Treehouse all'E3 2017 per Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, il nuovo titolo Ubisoft.
Trascrizione
00:00Hey, hey, welcome back to Nintendo Treehouse Live.
00:03I'm Terry, and we have Mario Plus Rabbits Kingdom Battle coming up right now.
00:08First, let's do some introductions.
00:09I have my colleague here, Rich, and we have some friends of ours from Ubisoft,
00:13Xavier, and Davide.
00:15Thank you for coming, guys.
00:16So glad to be here.
00:19So let's go into the game and let's kind of go talk about a little bit of this game for
00:22us.
00:23Sure.
00:25So Mario Plus Rabbits Kingdom Battle is the game we just announced.
00:29We're super happy.
00:31We were announcing the game yesterday at the conference,
00:34and since then we start to show a bit of the gameplay.
00:37So we're super happy to show today more of the basics and combat basics, exploration,
00:43and so that's what we're going to do.
00:46And in terms of the game itself, so what happened is the Rabbits have just been teleported into the kingdom.
00:53A twisted version of the Mushroom Kingdom.
00:55Yeah, and it changed completely the kingdom in itself by twisting it,
00:59so you'll have a lot of surprises and elements in the environment,
01:04but basically Mario doesn't know anything about the Rabbits when the game starts.
01:08So we're still at the beginning of the game here,
01:10but basically that's when things start to go a bit crazy with Twisted Elements.
01:16We even have this plant here that's a bit special.
01:20So yes, we tried to recreate a very immersive world by using the misproportion,
01:28so you feel that you are small and in a huge environment which is enveloping you.
01:33And everything around you is animated.
01:36Like for example, this plant, it's incredible because it's animated by hand,
01:41and it's following the music of Grand Kirkhope, which is the composer of the game.
01:47So it's one of the things that I love about this game.
01:52It's part of things that Mr. Miyamoto, Nintendo and us as well, Ubisoft wanted to see as well,
01:58in terms of details, things that we wanted to play with.
02:01So yeah, let's go. And a big part of the game as well is the combat itself.
02:06Yes, and when the players see those enemy flags in front of them,
02:11they know that they are about to play in a fight, a combat.
02:16Before we go in actually, there is a couple of interesting characters that's following Mario.
02:20Let's talk about them a little bit.
02:22Yeah, so aside the big Goomba that has been almost played with because of the Rabbits and stuff,
02:28for the characters and the heroes themselves, so we have Mario, of course.
02:31He's a true hero. He's a fighter-like character in combat as well,
02:35so he's really strong almost everywhere.
02:37But we also have Rabbit Peach.
02:40She's a hot-tempered, quite fun of Mario, but hot-tempered rabbit,
02:44and a very strong personality as well.
02:48And Rabbit Luigi, the third one, he's a wizard-like type of character.
02:53He's really clumsy, naive, but at the same time he's quite dangerous in combat.
02:58and as the game progresses as well.
03:00So yeah, it's a nice cast, and this cast is the beginning cast.
03:04So as you'll progress into the game, you'll unlock new heroes.
03:09So you don't unlock the heroes at the beginning, you unlock them throughout the adventure.
03:12Now can we say what other characters will be in the game as well?
03:15Sure.
03:16Absolutely.
03:17The player will control eight heroes.
03:21We'll be able to choose between eight heroes at the end.
03:24So that will be the player's roster.
03:28And we really wanted to play around this contrast between Mario's character
03:33and the rabbit's one in order to create the humor.
03:37So if there is something that the rabbits learn from Mario throughout the game,
03:42it's how to become heroes, and Mario learns how to cut the joke.
03:49So we go for the fight?
03:51Yeah, let's do it.
03:52Let's do it.
03:53Yeah, definitely.
03:54All right!
03:56So you switch from exploration mode to battle mode this way.
03:59So basically when you see those two flags, you switch to battle mode.
04:02and you don't control any more directly your characters.
04:06You control Beepo, a little cursor you see in front.
04:10And this little guy in fact is telling you, you can tell him where to go
04:15and the characters will follow.
04:17So that's a big difference between the two.
04:19And for us it was a good match, you know, between exploration and combat
04:22in terms of the feeling we have.
04:25So let's go.
04:26So as soon as you start the combat, a fly cam is showing you the battleground.
04:30But you can always use the tactic cam,
04:34which is a tool that will let the player observe the surrounding
04:39to decide what to do, the best move to take.
04:43And as you can see in the top right part of the stream,
04:48the mission objective, it's a reach area.
04:51So it's not really important to defeat the enemy there,
04:55but to really decide the best way, possible way,
05:00to arrive directly at the objective.
05:03So the player will have two choices.
05:05Directly in front of the enemy that seems a little bit risky
05:09or moving a little bit on the right to use the cover
05:13and being protected by the attack of the rabbits.
05:18So what you see right now is Soviet, which is controlling the heroes.
05:24In this case, each hero can perform three different types of action.
05:30As we are quite early in the game, right now we have only movement and attack.
05:36Later on there will be techniques which is way more, let's say,
05:40an indirect way to deal with an enemy and it's more magical.
05:44But the blue line is defining where the characters can move.
05:49And in this case, Xavier could, for example, go behind the cover
05:53in order to be all protected or just go in front of the enemy.
05:58So as soon as you press, the character moves.
06:01And like Davide said, we can attack, but we'll show first the movement phase itself.
06:06You can do whatever you want. You can move first, attack then.
06:11It's up to you to decide, in fact.
06:13You can advance towards another cover such, for example, as a rabbit's Luigi is doing.
06:20Or even better, you can move the cursor behind one of your teammate
06:26in order to activate what we call the team jump.
06:30And the team jump is expanding your area of movement,
06:36allowing you to go much further than your normal area of movement.
06:42Right.
06:43And this is also allowing you to fill the gaps such as the small river
06:47that you can see in front of you.
06:52After that, you can choose, but there is no sequence, right?
06:58Exactly. So basically here, we just finished the movement phase.
07:01And now we can see in this fight that the enemies are positioned in a way to zerg you.
07:07They're called Ziggy's. Those guys don't have a lot of life points,
07:11but they're really, they dash you all the time.
07:13So it's good that I'm on the other side with Mario, thanks to the team jump.
07:16So when you're ready, you press A, you attack.
07:19And what you may have seen just over the enemy is the percentage, hit percentage.
07:25So 100% means 100% chance to hit.
07:28If they are behind a half cover, full cover, it changes.
07:31So we'll see that just later on.
07:34So I'll continue with the attack here.
07:37And even defeat the enemy in the process.
07:39He's zapped out.
07:41And in terms of story, basically, they're not dying.
07:45They're going back to the hub as white rabbits.
07:47So we're actually saving the rabbits here.
07:50That's great. Then you feel good about defeating these guys.
07:52Yeah, absolutely.
07:52That's the whole point because they, I don't want to spoil too much about the story,
07:57but they have been controlled by a force.
08:00And by defeating them, you are removing this force from them.
08:05And they are part of the gameplay loop of the players
08:09because they will go back to the pitch castle.
08:13And the more you free them, the more they will build structure
08:16that will help the player throughout their adventure.
08:21So we saw there Mario was attacked, but he's behind a full cover.
08:24So the enemy had 0% chance of hitting him.
08:27But the cover did take damage, I noticed.
08:30Yeah!
08:31Exactly. So it's actually something really important in the combat itself.
08:36There are actually, aside one that we have later in the game,
08:40no cover that is really infinite.
08:42Like, they have this amount of damage.
08:44And if they get destroyed, you don't have any cover anymore to defend yourself.
08:49So, for example, here, if I go and attack this enemy,
08:54I know I'm not going to hit it.
08:55It's 0% chance.
08:56But just to show you the damage on the cover itself,
08:59this is a wood cover.
09:00So in two hits, it's going to be destroyed.
09:02And the one you see here next to Rabbit Luigi is a brick cover.
09:06So this one is a bit more tough.
09:08So in three hits.
09:09So basically, that's really important in the game itself to use this.
09:14The enemies will do it. You will do it.
09:15And this is cool because you can also use interactive elements
09:20in the battlegrounds, such as the rabbit's pipe.
09:23The rabbit's pipe really helps you to go in other places
09:26where you couldn't reach just with your area of movement.
09:31So when you use that tacticam, spot those pipes
09:35and use that to plan out your strategy.
09:38Exactly.
09:38So that's why the observation part is important.
09:42and we gave this tool to the player in order to really study
09:46if they want to the battlegrounds.
09:49Yeah, definitely.
09:50It does count for...
09:51You do have to explore a bit
09:53to really figure out that turn-based strategy
09:55and find out what the best advantages you have,
09:57especially in this new level and environment
09:59that you're encountering.
10:01Exactly.
10:01Here, you know, it's even...
10:03We showed some gameplay yesterday at the conference.
10:06It was just a fight after.
10:07This one is before, like David was saying,
10:09we don't even have the techniques.
10:10But one thing here that is really important for us
10:13in terms of design and philosophy was...
10:15You see the water?
10:17This is creating a gap.
10:18So it teaches you to use team jump a lot.
10:21But the enemies do not use team jump.
10:23Those guys are dashers.
10:25You don't have glow throtters.
10:26The glow throtters, the second archetype we have,
10:28they do team jumps.
10:29But here, we really want to show the player, like,
10:32hey, you can protect yourself.
10:34They will dash you eventually
10:36because they will take the pipe by the end of the map,
10:38trying to rush you.
10:39But it depends
10:40because according to where you are in the fight,
10:42we never know what the enemies can do.
10:44But they should do that in this map.
10:46Because again, we want to teach you
10:48this is the way you can play as well.
10:50You can reach, you know, bigger zones
10:53and reach new areas.
10:55But also you can go over gaps like water.
10:57And this is quite cool.
10:58And later in the game, you'll even have height.
11:01So if you go up there, you have an advantage in terms of damage.
11:05So it starts to build up, you know?
11:07We start to put the ingredients together.
11:09And this map is 30 minutes into the game.
11:12So it's really a good map to start to get those things.
11:15Yeah, the players are still learning here.
11:17So it's really up to them where to move.
11:20They want to go directly against the enemy
11:23and risking to be dashed.
11:26But they maybe could arrive at the objective sooner.
11:31Or they want to take maybe a more safer route
11:36like the one we are taking right now
11:38because we are moving, helping each other
11:41using the protection of the coals.
11:44Right. And you had mentioned earlier,
11:45the objective for this battle is really to get
11:47to this final checkpoint.
11:49Yeah.
11:49There are different battles
11:50where you actually have to defeat all the enemies.
11:52So here, it's a tricky map.
11:55Of course, we're playing.
11:56We know pretty much the map.
11:57But for the player, it's going to be a first tricky map
11:59because they could take this as,
12:01oh, we like to defeat all the enemies.
12:03But the issue is that we have a lot of respawn.
12:05And the more you wait, the more enemies will spawn.
12:09And it's going to be very complicated.
12:10So here, it's a reach objective.
12:12You need to reach when your character needs to be in the zone.
12:16And this is something key for the players to do.
12:18And then we have multiple enemy objectives.
12:21We have defeat, defeat all, defeat this type of enemy, reach, escort,
12:27and those type of objectives throughout the game
12:29to really challenge the player again to do the right decisioning
12:33when it matters.
12:35So, Rabbit Luigi is really close now.
12:37He's not close enough because we made it so that...
12:39Not close enough to arrive at the mission objective.
12:44And definitely, this is something that we've never seen before, really,
12:47with Mario and he's pairing up with this mashup.
12:49But also, you know, we have Mario for the first time really using a weapon,
12:54a projectile weapon.
12:57Yeah, you know, Mario has never been afraid to take whatever power-ups are available to him.
13:03So, it's cool to see these new types of weapons that he can play with.
13:07He's adapting to his surroundings.
13:08Yes, plus they are very, very light-hearted and funny.
13:13Because the weapons in our game are not just there in order to damage the enemy,
13:19but they are also a tool to create fun because you can plug additional behavior,
13:24such as you can glue an enemy on the ground.
13:27There is a particular enemy that is very powerful in using the techniques.
13:34You can freeze his face so he cannot speak anymore.
13:37Therefore, he cannot use the techniques.
13:40There is someone very good at shooting.
13:42You can hink his face so he cannot see you and he cannot shoot at you.
13:47You can burn enemies so they are running with their bottom on fire.
13:54And there is also propagation.
13:56So, if an enemy on fire is touching another enemy, it will propagate.
14:02There are some crazy behavior that could happen within the battlefield,
14:08and that's what we call the domino effect.
14:11So, you can chain multiple effects and the output could be very, very crazy.
14:18Also, when you finish the fight, you can go back, of course,
14:21to the zone in free movement and exploration mode.
14:25All the coins that you have on your battlefield is because when you destroy covers,
14:30you gather coins as well.
14:31So, even if you hit an enemy behind a cover and the cover is destroyed,
14:35it's rewarding as well for the player.
14:37So, you can go back and buy better weapons thanks to coins.
14:41But if we have a few minutes, we just wanted to show something as well here.
14:44Just a quick fact.
14:46You know, we went that way for the fight itself.
14:49But in fact, the most effective way, let's say advanced way, would have been to go that way.
14:53Even if it's dangerous, the first round you get dashed and stuff.
14:57Second round, you really dash the enemy well.
15:01So, a good strategy would be to put Mario on the right side.
15:04He's a good damage output in terms of his weapon.
15:07Rabbit Luigi is not really good with his weapon, but he's good with dashing.
15:11So, you can put it in the front line and then you go really quickly to the zone here.
15:15So, yeah, we just revealed something for people when they will play.
15:20They know how to play the map now.
15:21But yeah, it's up to the player to decide.
15:23They can go front or go left, right.
15:25Whatever they have in mind, they can go for it.
15:28Depends on the play side itself.
15:30Because a good tactical game should give the player the choice to choose their strategy.
15:34So, not only in terms of how you want to customize your character,
15:40which kind of weapon you want them to be equipped with,
15:44but also the plan that you want to take into the battlefield.
15:49So, we didn't want for the battles to have only one possible solution, but multiple.
15:59So, let's go to the Peach Castle to show the hub itself.
16:04Yeah, let's take a look.
16:05We didn't present it yet, although it's a big part of the game, of course.
16:13So, of course, it's a Peach Castle.
16:15It was not destroyed by the arrival of the Rabbits.
16:18So, thank God, this is good.
16:20But the issue, or let's say the challenge for Peach as a princess as well,
16:25is that the castle will evolve as the game progresses.
16:28So, as you progress, you'll see more stuff built by the Rabbits, a bit randomly.
16:34Or, not randomly, like this one, Battle HQ, to change your team,
16:38change your weapons, change your skills in the skill tree,
16:42access new worlds, so this one is the first one, Ancient Gardens.
16:47And you also have many puzzles around that you have to solve.
16:51And as you finish a world, you get new contextual actions and exploration as well,
16:54so you can progress and see other places that you couldn't go before.
17:00So, this is key as well for the player to, you know, go back to the hub
17:03and see what they could do now that have new abilities.
17:08So, yeah, this hub will evolve throughout the game.
17:12And we won't be able to show today, you know, the other worlds.
17:16But as soon as you finish a world, you can access a new one with this new ability.
17:21And the cannon takes you and then shoots you in the world itself.
17:26And we just saw an example here of a little puzzle that we have with the bright coins
17:32that we have in the game as well.
17:33So, we have yellow coins, red coins, blue coins as well in the bug zones.
17:38Museum, where you get all the collectibles from the game.
17:41You can gather in the game.
17:43This one is still broken when you're at that moment in the game,
17:47but it's the washing time machine.
17:49That's what they used to come in the world itself of Mario.
17:53And it will be useful in the future.
17:55You can go back and revisit and get better scores in all the fights that you've done.
18:01And also other elements that here are, you know, teasing that the player will discover.
18:09New worlds here, etc, etc.
18:11So, that's really an important part of the game as well.
18:14This hub and how it will evolve with the game itself.
18:17And I do remember that the hub was one of the first things that we decided to do within the
18:24game.
18:24Like really a point of contact for the player to really help me throughout the whole game.
18:33And I remember when we were told that we were about to work with Nintendo in a game
18:42that was featuring both Mario and the rabbits.
18:45And we immediately understood that it was a lifetime opportunity.
18:51We worked really night and day in order to find something unique for the rabbits, but as well for Mario.
19:00So, as we are huge tactical fans, we said, okay, we should use them to propose something fresh, something new
19:08in the turn-based combat games.
19:13But at the same time, we wanted to stay true to the Mario universe.
19:18And therefore, we decided to mix those two different phases, but in a similar way, like the combat and the
19:25adventure.
19:26And at the end, when we felt that we had a solid idea, we decided to meet with Nintendo.
19:34And I remember that we had only three weeks and a half.
19:39It was crazy to remember, to really prepare something.
19:44And when I finally met Mr. Miyamoto, I felt like he's the creator of my favorite game.
19:53It's the inspiration of my career as a game designer.
19:56And I felt like if I was divided like in two.
19:59So, the passionate Nintendo player and the Ubisoft character director.
20:05The urgency to ask for an autograph.
20:08And the responsibility to present the game the most professional way.
20:12Sure.
20:13But at the end, the effort paid off because he told me that he was impressed.
20:20And I keep asking how come that we add Mario and Luigi in our prototype.
20:25But the truth is that even if we spent, we had only three weeks and a half to work on
20:33the prototype.
20:34We recreated Mario and Luigi from scratch.
20:37The model, the animation, the rig.
20:39In order to try to translate their essence in our prototype.
20:44And I guess, I think that this was the moment where we truly convinced Nintendo about our commitment and passion.
20:54So, from that moment on, we kept meeting with them in Kyoto.
21:01It was an incredible journey.
21:04And Mario plus Rabbids Kingdom Battle become really a work of love.
21:11A labor of love.
21:12That's such an amazing story.
21:13Yeah.
21:13I think you guys have a lot to be proud of.
21:15And I know that Mr. Miyamoto, you know, he's hard to impress.
21:18And you guys have worked really hard.
21:21And I'm super proud of what you guys have come up with.
21:24I can't wait to play the full game.
21:26And it's just beautiful looking.
21:27Yeah.
21:27The graphics and the different tactical style, but also the exploration of the game.
21:31It's a new style that we never really encountered before.
21:34We didn't sleep a lot these past months and years, but we're super happy to be here and talk about
21:41the game.
21:42It feels great.
21:43Like, you know, we were almost like in the cave, you know, working on this game.
21:48And I think for the team, the whole team, the dev team, all the studios, to be here today to
21:53talk about the game, show the game, finally, it's just super exciting.
21:58Yesterday press conference was...
22:00Yeah.
22:00It went very well.
22:01All the emotions we had on the...
22:03It was great.
22:05And I think now, showing the game like that, it's just incredible.
22:10Thank you.
22:11Awesome.
22:11Thank you so much, guys, for coming.
22:13Thanks, guys.
22:13So this was Mario plus Rabbits, Kingdom Battle.
22:17And then up next, we have Fire Emblem Warriors.
22:19Stay tuned for more.
