00:00But we begin the show today with a very big trade in the National Football League and the reset button
00:05officially pushed by the Miami Dolphins, one of their two biggest playmakers remaining from last season, including Devon A-Chain.
00:14It is Jalen Waddell headed to the Denver Broncos.
00:18Miami is getting a first round pick back in return, 30th overall, also a third round pick as well.
00:24Waddell now goes to Denver and they'll also get Miami's fourth round pick.
00:29So it's Cortland Sutton on the inside, Jalen Waddell on the outside, and Miami now just basically hitting rebuild here.
00:3611th pick in the draft, 30th pick in the draft, Miami looking toward the future and Denver looking toward the
00:42present.
00:43So they get a lot better there.
00:44So now Miami's wide receivers without Tyreek Hill, without Jalen Waddell, yeah, they look kind of interesting here because there's
00:52probably a lot of players that you'd recognize here.
00:542-2 Atwell, who they just signed from the Rams this past week, Jalen Tolbert, Terrace Marshall Jr., Malik Washington,
01:02Taj Washington, Theo Weiss Jr., and A.J. Henning.
01:07Yes, Miami's win total will be probably the lowest in the National Football League going into the season.
01:13All right, in case you missed it last night, Italy took a 2-0 lead on Venezuela in the semifinals
01:18of the World Baseball Classic, but it was not enough to hold on.
01:20Venezuela comes back to win. They also pushed past that run and a half to cover Venezuela's first World Baseball
01:27Classic Championship appearance.
01:29It was Mikel Garcia of the Royals coming through. He was 2-4 with an RBI.
01:34Also, Eugenio Suarez homered in the game as well. Venezuela will take on Team USA tonight.
01:41Nolan McLean will start against Eduardo Rodriguez.
01:44But before we get to tonight, let's get to last night. Here's Mikel Garcia, Ronald Acuna Jr., on Picking Up
01:50the Win.
01:51Buenasera.
01:55What was the post-game scene like in the clubhouse? Celebration, dancing, or looking ahead already to tomorrow?
02:04A lot of dancing, you know. We've never been in the final championship in WBC before, and we get there,
02:11and, you know, we're happy, we're excited to play tomorrow against the United States.
02:16And we have to come tomorrow and play the same way we're playing against Japan, against Hillary, and, you know,
02:23we have to show the world who Venezuela is.
02:26And the dancing you mentioned in the clubhouse and in the dugout, who would you say is the best dancer,
02:31and who is the worst?
02:34Honestly, I think my cousin is the best dancer.
02:39Buenas.
02:40I shared some words with the team, just how grateful I am to be teammates with all of them, because
02:47they were incredible.
02:49So, this, it's a really sad night for us, and it's not because we lost, because we played a great
02:55game.
02:56Venezuela was the better team tonight.
02:58There's nothing to hold your head for that.
02:59I think we're just sad that this team's not going to be together anymore.
03:02I mean, guys have flights at 7 a.m. tomorrow morning.
03:05So, you know, it's kind of back to the real world now.
03:09It's just been an incredible run.
03:10So, I just shared how thankful I am and how humbled I am that to be the captain of this
03:15team is one of the, you know, one of the high points of my baseball career so far, and I'm
03:19never going to forget it.
03:21And on to the NCAA tournament we go.
03:23When Alabama plays this weekend, looks like they're not going to have second-leading scorer Aiden Holloway.
03:28We told you yesterday on the show he was arrested for having more than a pound of marijuana inside his
03:34house, which I guess authorities led to believe it was more than just something like personal use here.
03:39But I won't speculate there.
03:41Naturally, Holloway was a very big scorer and a big part of the Crimson Tide, but it doesn't look like
03:45he's playing at least in their first game this weekend.
03:47Who knows what will happen beyond that.
03:49Also, the Dodgers announced yesterday Unique Low has inked a deal to become the official partner of the Dodgers.
03:56They're a fashion company out of Japan, which makes a lot of sense considering more Japanese folks are watching Shohei
04:02Otani and Yamamoto than probably anybody else in the country.
04:06So, that does make sense for the Dodgers.
04:08It still will be called Dodger Stadium, by the way.
04:10Unique Low just goes, as you can see there, at the top.
04:13All right, so the madness begins tonight.
04:14Who will jump into the tournament as the 16th seed between UMBC, that's Baltimore, and Howard tonight.
04:22Right now, UMBC, one-and-a-half-point favorites, total of 140-and-a-half.
04:26The winner will get to play Michigan and probably lose.
04:29But, hey, a win tonight is a win, as they say.
04:32Meanwhile, struggling Texas tonight takes on North Carolina State, and whoever wins that is the sixth seed, and they will
04:38take on BYU.
04:39But, as you can see there, this is like a pick-em game as well.
04:41So, two good games potentially on tap tonight.
04:44So, pick your games, NBA, NHL, World Baseball Classic, or maybe some NCAA tournament if you choose.
04:50Hottest team going right now in the NBA.
04:52There's no question the Atlanta Hawks trying to get out of that play-in game they seem to play in
04:56for years.
04:57They win last night their 10th game in a row.
04:59Hawks beat the Magic 124-112.
05:02They win in cover as two-and-a-half-point favorites.
05:05They've, as I said, won 10 games in a row.
05:07Nikkel Alexander-Walker had 41 points.
05:11He led all scorers in the game last night.
05:13Also, the Lakers take care of the Rockets.
05:15They've won six in a row as well as the Lakers cruise toward the playoffs, 100-92.
05:20They win as one-and-a-half-point favorites, and it was Luka who was the big scorer yesterday.
05:2336 points, six rebounds, and six assists despite 18 points from Kevin Durant.
05:30He said after the game, it was tough to be doubled at the top of the key.
05:37Kevin, what are some of the things that can be done to avoid those double teams with you at the
05:42top of the key?
05:46I mean, I don't know.
05:48I don't know.
05:48I don't know.
05:49I think we just got to convert.
05:54Maybe I got to just get out the way, get in the corner, space the floor out for other guys.
05:58I think just that when I get the ball against certain teams, they just going to settle out and just
06:03say, you know,
06:04we're just going to double and play a little zone behind it and see what happens.
06:08And if we give open shots, that's cool.
06:10But maybe I just need to get out the way, you know, be honest, set screens, be able to be
06:13ready to catch and shoot,
06:15just space the floor for my teammates, you know.
06:17So it's been happening throughout the season.
06:19But, you know, I'm starting to figure out, I think I just need to get out the way and let
06:24other guys dribble the ball.
06:26What a season for Jalen Brown of the Boston Celtics.
06:30He leads Boston to another win last night.
06:32This one, a 120-112 win over the Suns.
06:37Suns do cover.
06:38Line was eight and a half, but Celtics win again.
06:40Tatum, 21.
06:42Jalen Brown, 41, despite Devin Booker's 40 in the game.
06:46And also the Warriors beat the Wizards.
06:47It was win number 600 for Steve Kerr.
06:50Congratulations to him, future Hall of Famer, I would guess, as a coach.
06:53Kerr, after the game, talked about winning his 600th career win as a coach.
06:58And you're the fourth fastest coach to 600 wins.
07:01Just what does it mean to be in that kind of company with Phil, Pop, and Pat?
07:07It's surreal to, you know, hear my name in that group.
07:14But I can tell you that there's one thing that bonds us all together, those names and mine.
07:24It's talent.
07:25It's talent.
07:26I mean, you can't win in this league without great players.
07:30And I was blessed from the day I took this job with incredible talent with Steph and Clay and Andre
07:37and Andrew Bogut and down the list, Harrison Barnes.
07:41And then, obviously, over the subsequent, you know, 12 years, I could list, you know, I can go down the
07:48list.
07:48David West, Kevin Durant, Zaza, all these guys are just amazing.
07:52And the honor to incredible talent and a great organization.
07:58All right, Hollywood Brown looks like he's on his way to the Philadelphia Eagles, reportedly signing a one-year deal
08:03with them.
08:04Brown has bounced around the league a little bit, Kansas City, Baltimore, et cetera.
08:07The never-ending prediction market saga continues here on Newswire.
08:12We enjoy covering it.
08:13We enjoy talking about it.
08:14But nobody more so than our next guest, Dustin Gawker, who has a podcast, discusses it a lot.
08:19And also over on his sub stack, which you can subscribe to to learn more about the ever-changing landscape
08:24of sports betting and also prediction markets as well.
08:26Well, Dustin, great to catch up with you here as we head toward the NCAA tournament, which is nearly impossible
08:33to predict.
08:34In fact, it's so much so impossible that a nice little promotion here from Kalshi, which is willing to award
08:41you the kind of money that would not just change your life and your family's life, but everybody you know's
08:47life and everybody else.
08:49I mean, no one's going to hit this, are they?
08:52It's a fun promotion, though.
08:53Yeah, has anybody ever hit a perfect bracket, Craig?
08:57Do you know the answer to that?
08:59The answer is no.
09:00The answer is no.
09:01The closest anybody's ever documented was somebody got the first 49 right, which is on its own crazy.
09:07That's basically a 49-leg parlay, right?
09:09To get the first 49 right.
09:11Anyway, Kalshi is running a perfect bracket challenge.
09:14We've seen this before, variations of this, and they're giving away a billion dollars if you get a perfect bracket.
09:21Newsflash, none of you are going to hit a perfect bracket.
09:23You're not winning a billion dollars, but it's a nice story.
09:26It's a big, flashy number that Kalshi is going to put out there as it tries to acquire customers this
09:32March Madness season.
09:33They are giving a million dollars away to charity and also a million dollars to the person who has the
09:39best bracket out of everyone.
09:41And again, I'll caution this.
09:42You're far more likely to win Powerball than you are to win the perfect bracket at Kalshi.
09:47So maybe go play Powerball a couple times.
09:50That's just as likely, although this is free to enter.
09:53We're also coming up on this.
09:55Kalshi is the end boss right now in prediction markets and sports betting trading via prediction markets.
10:01Last year, they did a half a billion dollars of trading on March Madness, both the men's and women's tournaments.
10:08And this is just as they're getting started, right?
10:10They started taking bets on Super Bowl, rolling the March Madness, and this thing starts taking off last year.
10:15So how big is it going to be this year?
10:17I don't know, but we're certainly talking billions of dollars, maybe tens of billions of dollars.
10:23I don't know.
10:23There's going to be a lot of interest in this.
10:25I'd say under $10 billion on total volume at Kalshi, but certainly a big opportunity for prediction markets and for
10:32lots of people in this space.
10:34You know, FanDuel, DraftKings, Fanatics also contesting this quality market.
10:38It'll be a big time to do customer acquisition.
10:40One of the biggest times other than World Cup and the football season when it comes back around.
10:46Yeah.
10:46Can't wait to see somebody get it all right, Dustin, and win that billion.
10:49I'll be right there to congratulate that person, too.
10:52How about just getting half of them right?
10:53That'd be great.
10:54Okay, so if I'm not mistaken, correct me if I'm wrong on this, the NBA has at least temporarily allowed
11:02players to have some sort of stake or interest in some of the prediction markets.
11:07I believe Giannis Antetokounmpo was the first one.
11:10Do we have a second player now that has a similar partnership?
11:14Is it the same?
11:15What do you make of it?
11:16We don't know exactly.
11:18Definitely, yeah, Devin Booker, obviously another current NBA player, you know, was promoting this billion-dollar bracket challenge as well.
11:26He's getting some of the charity money that Calci is spending for in turn for promoting it.
11:32We don't know a whole lot more on the financials or the commercial terms or if there even are any
11:37beyond that charity dedication that Calci is doing.
11:41But, yeah, this is the second time we've had an NBA player get directly involved in prediction markets in some
11:46way and promoting them.
11:47And it is this weird world where the NBA has so far been kind of arm's length with prediction markets.
11:53But players, they're allowed to do this under the CBA right now to do this kind of promotion if they
11:59so choose, as long as they're not taking huge stakes in the companies, which, you know, Giannis did not take
12:04a huge stake in Calci.
12:05It was a smaller stake.
12:06So, yeah, but it's this weird world where, you know, NHL has a deal with the Calci and Poly market.
12:13Will the NBA, will Major League Baseball do it?
12:16What will the NFL do?
12:19These are the questions that we're going to start seeing answers to over the course of the coming months and
12:23year.
12:24Yeah, it will be fascinating, especially to see with Major League Baseball season coming up soon, whether or not they
12:29get involved with prediction markets.
12:31There's been some discussion on that as well.
12:33Opening day, of course, is coming next week.
12:34All right, so, Dustin, the CFTC generally quiet on a lot of the comings and goings with these prediction markets.
12:42But it would appear at least that some new guidelines that we're reading about have been put out.
12:47Do these sort of make any difference in this Wild West world of prediction markets?
12:52Any changes, alterations, or just yes, we're aware of things that are going on?
12:58Yeah, no real rules yet.
12:59They're making rules.
13:01I mean, this sounds really boring.
13:01I know, I'm sorry, but rules are part of what is going to make prediction markets stick around and part
13:07of all of this.
13:07But the most interesting things here are the CFTC, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, which is the regulator of prediction
13:13markets, has said it is trying to engage with leagues and also apparently the NCA on prediction markets and kind
13:20of hear what they have to say about this.
13:24And, you know, they are also encouraging prediction markets operators to work with the leagues themselves on terms of what
13:30markets they can offer, data partnerships, integrity partnerships.
13:33And, you know, none of this is like solid concrete, but, you know, this is we've gone so far.
13:38It has been the Wild West.
13:39People kind of have done whatever they want in prediction markets.
13:42And the CFTC is trying to get their arms around this and create some rules.
13:45So that process is going to be be very long.
13:48But right now, the engagement of the CFTC and again, just saying that sports event contracts they believe are legal.
13:54That's that's something we haven't really heard a whole lot over the past year as all of this has exploded.
13:58So just to hear them say we think sports event contracts are covered and we're going to write rules that
14:03will will contemplate that into the future.
14:05Boy, this is scary, Dustin.
14:07I guess some journalists now know how it feels to be a player that's getting threatened by some bets or
14:13prediction markets.
14:14Basically, an Israeli journalist is on the receiving end of some threats based on how he reported this war on
14:22with Israel, the United States, Iran, et cetera.
14:26My gosh, I've been on the end of making a mistake in journalism.
14:30I would hate to be on the end of a threat.
14:33Yeah, the second order effects of prediction markets are, yeah, journalists are often the ones saying are the resolution terms,
14:39right?
14:39Whether for a journalist or an outlet says something happened, that is a resolution term.
14:44And like, yeah, airstrikes in Iran are one of those at Polymarket, not at Cal Sheep.
14:49But yeah, this guy, I mean, you know, Fabian, who works at the Times of Israel, said gamblers trying to
14:54win a bet on Polymarket are vowing to kill me if I don't rewrite an Iran missile story.
14:58He details this in great detail.
15:00Yeah, Polymarket comes out, immediately condemns it, says we're banning the accounts, passing their info on to relevant authorities.
15:07But yeah, if you're a journalist now, it's a little scary for sure if you're getting lumped into prediction markets.
15:13Yeah, I would say right now I'm going to stay away from any predictions until I get this regulated.
15:20Dustin, thanks again for coming on.
15:21Appreciate it.
15:22Cheers.
15:23Cheers.
