Trade deadline is approaching- Will Celtics make an impact deal? Will Tatum take a step back to Jaylen, if Jayson returns? Or is this season Jaylen Brown's team? The debate is ON.
Transcript
00:00Celtics pretty handily handled that game last night.
00:04Indiana stinks.
00:06I mean, Indiana, they stink.
00:07They're just not the same team.
00:09I think the Celtics more about it now than anything I was watching.
00:12And it might have been pregame or halftime.
00:16It feels like we're getting closer and closer to the Tatum return.
00:20And that's going to be a part of my lead this morning.
00:22Because an NBA insider had some hot take on the trade deadline for the Celtics specifically.
00:28That I think is drawing a lot of conclusions for me that Tatum is on his way back.
00:33Because that's my biggest thing with this Celtics team is what you're going to do at the trade deadline.
00:37We see Chisman on the sidelines every game.
00:42Massive supporter.
00:43That's Billy Chisman, the new owner of the Celtics.
00:45Completely buying into this team.
00:48This team, I had a top three.
00:49They're second in the Eastern Conference.
00:52Detroit is the number one.
00:54They've played Detroit a few times this season.
00:57They've been battles.
00:57Detroit has got the better of them for most of that.
01:00The question becomes, what do you want to do with this Celtics team trade deadline-wise to make them a real contender?
01:08Because you believe in what you got in the possible return of Tatum.
01:12And I think he's coming back.
01:14All signs point to that.
01:15We're two weeks out from the trade deadline.
01:17I don't want to give away my entire lead.
01:18It's so hard to.
01:19Save it.
01:20Save it.
01:20Save it.
01:21You can save it.
01:22Switch the subject.
01:23Save it.
01:23I mean, the question just becomes, I guess, what do they really think about the apron penalty and whether or not he is, whether it's about that, the basketball penalty involved, or whether it is about the money.
01:41Right.
01:41And oftentimes, it's about the money.
01:44Right.
01:45What was Chisholm's job before this?
01:47He's like a private equity guy.
01:50Right.
01:51Like a hedge fund bro.
01:52So you buy depressed assets.
01:54Yes.
01:54And then you strip them to the bone and then make them profitable and then sell it.
01:59Yeah.
01:59That's basically that business model.
02:00But I don't get that vibe at all from him.
02:04No.
02:04Celtics also wouldn't have been a depressed asset, would they?
02:07Right.
02:08Right.
02:08He bought it at the top and now he's trying to make it more profitable by taking off pieces.
02:11I mean, he traded people this summer.
02:13He didn't make the team better this summer.
02:15Right?
02:15No, but I think it was a smart move because you traded pieces that you knew wouldn't be assets for your team.
02:21But you also had no idea when, if, you were going to get Jason Tatum back.
02:26Right.
02:26That was part of it.
02:27When you did that.
02:27It's kind of like what we think about the Patriots, our expectations, and then as the season goes, our expectations then change.
02:33But, I mean, you said there's no, I mean, the evidence is that since he took over the team, they've cut payroll.
02:38Yeah.
02:38Oh, yeah.
02:39Yeah.
02:39Which I thought we all, I think we all saw that coming.
02:42Seems like they're going to add payroll, though.
02:44Well, yeah, that's what you would think, right?
02:45And I think that's the biggest question.
02:47I don't want to get too big into your lead.
02:48But going back to cutting payroll, I think we all expected that no one really wanted to re-sign Porzingis.
02:55Because we kind of were like, maybe people were like half in, half out on Al Horford, but it was like, do you really want him?
03:02The only other guy was Drew Holiday.
03:03I think people might have been like, all right, we'll be fine with him coming back.
03:07But, yeah, I think at that point it was more like we didn't really know what was going on with Tatum.
03:12And it was like, all right, we might as well unload these players.
03:15And then Courtney's boy, Jalen Browns, went balling.
03:18I think most people probably felt like you, if it wasn't an issue when it came to money or to the basketball penalties involved in the apron, then you just run it back with those guys.
03:31But it actually, hindsight being 20-20, Porzingis has not played a lot this season.
03:40Drew Holiday, very similar situation.
03:43So those moves, I guess, were good moves.
03:48Porzingis is like, it might be a career for him.
03:51Like, that might be a wrap.
03:52Because whatever happened starting here with the illness, it does not seem like he is just going to get over that.
03:59No, that respiratory thing has been a major issue for him.
04:02And Al Horford, I think he's been plastered to the end of the bench in Golden State.
04:07Well, we knew he was at the end.
04:09Chris stops, we did not.
04:10And, you know, Drew Holiday out in Portland.
04:12So I think that, and that was the biggest thing, is the expectation of this team.
04:18And a lot of people, myself included, going into the season, before they started playing, thought maybe they'd be a playing team.
04:26And, you know, they fight for a playoff spot there.
04:28And then, because of the performance of Jalen Brown and the rest of those guys, now they're a legit two-seed in the East.
04:36You start to go, well, wait a second.
04:38And then you start to get these words about the Tatum return.
04:42Yeah.
04:42You know, now it's like, well, we got a good team, Tatum's possibly returning, and here comes the trade deadline.
04:49Does the return of Jason Tatum interfere at all with what Jalen Brown has been able to do and what the role that he has assumed alpha-wise on the basketball team?
05:05Or you're not worried about that at all, because I am.
05:09I'm not worried about that this year, because even if you get Tatum back, he's still not going to be the Tatum that we all came to love and seen and know what he is until next year, right?
05:21And then next year, you're going to – it's going to be – because Jalen Brown's role is completely different now.
05:27He's – if you watch him, he's, like, ball dominant.
05:30Yeah, but I don't mean basketball role.
05:33Oh, okay.
05:34I mean, out front, I'm the guy – this is my basketball team – is Jalen Brown, and he's done an extraordinary job.
05:46He's a first-team all-star and deserves it and is probably – I mean, probably close to averaging over 30 points a game.
05:54Yeah, he is.
05:54So, unbelievable.
05:55And the refs don't like him.
05:57Well, yeah, and he's dealt with that whole thing the whole season.
06:00And he got booed.
06:02But is he willing – once Jason Tatum comes back, is he willing to take a step back and go back into the Jalen Brown role?
06:11Being the 1B guy?
06:12Yeah.
06:13I think so, because he's – I think so, because he's – and this is a homer take, I know.
06:17But he's proved himself already this season without Tatum.
06:20And then every time he's been asked about Tatum, he's like, I think he'll be the fastest to come back.
06:24Like, he knows that that's coming.
06:27But he has been taking a bit of a victory lap on his –
06:30As he should.
06:31On his haters.
06:32Yeah, as he should.
06:34As he would say.
06:35Well-deserved.
06:36A couple days ago, he was talking about those that were there with him from the beginning.
06:44And those are the people that he is happiest for when it comes to being a first-team all-star.
06:50And so, I don't know if he was specifically talking about you, but you have –
06:53We're happy to have the Hillman down at Patriot Place.
06:56You've been with us since the beginning.
06:58Thank you, Robert.
06:58I will require only two tickets for Santa Clara.
07:02And that is all I'm asking for.
07:04And should they be available, I would gladly accept.
07:07But you know what?
07:08If you think that would be a problem, Greg, we're a couple weeks away from something that would fix it.
07:14They ain't gonna do that, man.
07:16They ain't gonna trade Jalen Brown.
07:18Is his value ever gonna be higher than it is right now?
07:21Oh!
07:22Oh!
07:23No.
07:24No, I mean, it's –
07:25This is sacrilege, but I like it.
07:26In the offseason, but, I mean, they won't trade him during the season.
07:29No, because what if he doesn't acquiesce and the Tatum comes back and they're not as functional on offense?
07:34I mean, it could happen.
07:35I'm not saying it's the right thing to do.
07:37I'm just saying –
07:37It's the wrong thing to do.
07:38I think what he's done –
07:40You can harumph all you want.
07:42I'm a fan.
07:42That's like – you see Tom Brady as your guy.
07:46Jalen Brown's my guy.
07:47So, I'm gonna say that's the wrong thing to do.
07:49But you understand.
07:50I think Greg is – his question is really valid because of – he's not saying basketball.
07:56He's saying personality.
07:58Right.
07:58To go from being the guy, 1A, to now maybe being 1B again.
08:05Right.
08:05It's gonna be hard.
08:06And he's somebody that – that always seemed to be an issue for him, right?
08:11And now –
08:12He is somebody who has told you an awful lot of the time that he doesn't get the respect that he deserves.
08:20Right.
08:21And he thought he was a number one playing on a team that just had a slightly better number one.
08:26And that thought now has become a reality.
08:29So, it's not that he can speculate about what he would be in the absence of Jason Tatum.
08:34He's been one of the best players in the NBA without Tatum.
08:36And they're the two seed.
08:38Yeah.
08:38Yeah, but they've won a championship, the two Js together.
08:41Like, I'm so sick of the narrative of these two Js hate each other, can't get along, can't play together.
08:48It's like –
08:48But that's not –
08:49I didn't say – they don't hate each other.
08:50No, I know, but –
08:51That's not the narrative.
08:52But I think that that's the way in which if we keep going down this road, that's where it trends.
08:56And Greg's question is so valid.
08:58It's like, you know you're the 1A.
09:00Now you've got to be the 1B.
09:02That's a hard pill for anybody to swallow, never mind a very competitive guy.
09:06But at the same time, like, let's give the guy the credit he deserves.
09:10He stepped into that role.
09:11He's done a great job.
09:12And let's hope that he can get back to that 1B spot.
09:14Yeah.
09:14It's actually a compliment that I say to Tatum now because he's so valuable.
09:19He's done so well.
09:20He's been – exceeded my expectations.
09:22And I think – I mean, not to speak for you guys, but most of ours as well.
09:25So if you're two weeks away from a deadline where Tatum is coming back and the aura, the way in which this team is working this year is changed,
09:34it's just something I think – I guarantee you Brad Stevens wouldn't be shy of just talking about it to understand that.
09:40And the rest of the league now knows.
09:42The rest of the league goes, Jalen Brown can carry a team on his own, right?
09:47And so if the rest of the league knows that his value is going to stay at the level it is, it just comes to Jalen's personality.
09:56Because this has nothing to do with basketball the way you posed the question.
10:00And it's a great question.
10:01Is his personality able to be like, all right, it's – Tatum's the guy again.
10:10Yeah, no, I think it's an interesting thing to think about.
10:14This is Derek from New Hampshire.
10:17Hello, Derek.
10:19Good morning, crew.
10:21I will be attending tomorrow.
10:22I'm excited to see you guys.
10:24Oh, excellent.
10:24Tomorrow morning at Wachusett.
10:27Yes, sir.
10:28That is correct.
10:29Excellent.
10:29I will be there.
10:30Excellent.
10:30Can't wait to see you.
10:32Perfect.
10:33I just want to back up Curtis's claim, and Wiggy just took the words right out of my mouth.
10:37Curtis is 100% correct.
10:38And Brown is at his highest possibility to be, you know, trade-worthy.
10:43But the only thing that concerns me is, is the league going to realize that he's going to be able to hold a team on his own?
10:53And if the Celtics don't trade him and Tatum comes back, is it just going to be a clash?
10:58Yeah.
10:58This is the best time to trade him, especially with the stuff that happened with the Olympics and how he reacted with that.
11:06But, I mean, there's no better time.
11:09All right.
11:10Derek?
11:11Well, I'm just, I'm sure people said the same thing after he got MVP in the finals.
11:15It was no better time than to trade Jalen Brown.
11:17Thank God we didn't.
11:19Yeah.
11:19Imagine what cluster F we'd be in right now.
11:21I know.
11:21You're right.
11:21But you know, Courtney, you should know.
11:24Well, they didn't trade Jalen Brown, and they lost to the Knicks the next year in the playoffs.
11:28Okay.
11:29After Jason Tatum went down with a massive injury.
11:32That was a game they were already losing.
11:33They were going to lose that series.
11:34But you know, Courtney, better than anything, especially in basketball, two alpha, extremely
11:40equal talented players on the same team don't work.
11:44Right.
11:45It just doesn't.
11:46Unless it's LeBron and his son.
11:47Yeah.
11:48But we all know who the true alpha is in that one.
11:51It's LeBron and his son.
11:51It's LeBron and his son.
11:51It's LeBron and his son.
11:52It's LeBron and his son.
11:52It's LeBron and his son.
11:53It's LeBron and his son.
11:53It's LeBron and his son.
11:53It's LeBron and his son.
11:53It's LeBron and his son.
11:54It's LeBron and his son.
11:55It's LeBron and his son.
11:55It's LeBron and his son.
11:56It's LeBron and his son.
11:57It's LeBron and his son.
11:58It's LeBron and his son.
11:59It's LeBron and his son.
12:00It's LeBron and his son.
12:01It's LeBron and his son.
12:02It's LeBron and his son.
12:03It's LeBron and his son.
