From torrential, flooding rain to snow to tornadoes and persistent gusty winds, AccuWeather's Jon Porter breaks down the varied risks of a massive storm affecting hundreds of millions of Americans on March 16.
Transcript
00:00I want to bring in our chief meteorologist Jonathan Porter.
00:02We're going to talk a little bit more about the why behind this storm
00:05and how we're seeing the impacts we're seeing.
00:07I know a lot of you on YouTube especially have been asking about the rest of the evening.
00:11So, John, let's tell them what to expect.
00:14Right, there's going to continue to be concerns here from a damaging wind perspective,
00:18widely separated tornadoes, and heavy rain becomes an issue more and more
00:23up the Interstate 95 corridor as we head toward New York and eventually Boston.
00:27And then look at even snow becoming a problem well in the interior here
00:32as well as that colder air arrives.
00:34So, it's a mix of spring and winter-like problems here over the coming hours.
00:40And look at the reds and yellows here.
00:42This is a concern here as that's going to indicate some of the heavier areas of rain.
00:47And Anna, some of that rain is going to come down at a rate of nearly one inch an hour
00:51in some locations.
00:52And although these storms are going to be moving fast,
00:54that's enough to result in flooding concerns, especially in urban areas
00:58and in places with poor drainage.
01:00Yeah, it's very easy to focus in on the immediate threats, the wind, any tornado threats.
01:06But flooding is certainly going to be an issue as we head into the overnight.
01:09And I want to continue to play this out because they're seeing a lot of snow,
01:12but you don't all necessarily get a lot of snow.
01:14No, that's right.
01:15There will be a couple of inches of snow in the higher elevations across the Appalachians
01:20and into parts of upstate New York, the Catskills and the Adirondacks as that colder air arrives.
01:26But notice how earlier in that loop, those heavier bands of rain remain persistent,
01:31especially across parts of eastern Long Island towards southern New England.
01:35That's where we have a concern that there could be two to four inches of rain in those areas
01:39and perhaps an AccuWeather local storm max of six as well.
01:44So, some might be wondering, how and why are we getting so much rain right now?
01:50Well, John, we've got to look towards the Caribbean to answer that question.
01:53We do, because look at this deep feed of tropical moisture.
01:57And what we're looking at here in the oranges and reds are high levels of atmospheric moisture,
02:02not only at the ground but also through the atmosphere, perhaps up to about 20,000 feet.
02:07And that's creating sort of a high-octane moisture environment.
02:11And look at what's happening.
02:12This big dip in the jet stream is channeling all this moisture right up the east coast.
02:17Where is it coming from?
02:18All the way down to the Caribbean.
02:20This is an atmospheric river.
02:22And look at where it's pointed.
02:23That oftentimes gives us a hint of where the biggest troubles can be.
02:28And it's southern New England.
02:30And that's why we think the heaviest of the rain is going to focus in those areas with, again,
02:34rates perhaps over an inch an hour, which can lead to those localized flooding concerns.
02:39That atmospheric river, it moves out by the time we really get to tomorrow.
02:44But the other thing is the wind.
02:46That really is the most pressing threat with this system.
02:48This is going to have a lot of wind in it.
02:51And one of the ways these storms at this time of the year, there's a lot of jet stream energy.
02:56And how does that get manifested?
02:57Well, it does in terms of the wind and wide areas of gusty winds.
03:01We've had that from a couple of different storms here over the last week.
03:04This one will be similar.
03:06We're expecting wind gusts, this is outside of thunderstorms, 50 to 60 miles an hour from down east Maine
03:12through Cape and the islands, much of Rhode Island, southern Connecticut down toward Long Island,
03:18the New York City area, and also down toward southern New Jersey and the Delmarva.
03:24Again, with wind gusts 50 to 60 miles an hour.
03:27That's enough to create some power outage concerns and maybe even some localized tree damage
03:32and things of that nature.
03:33Also, higher amounts of wind, 50 to 60 miles per hour near the Great Lakes and down the Appalachians.
03:39Otherwise, look at this, all the way from parts of Iowa to the east coast, wind gusts of 40 to
03:4450 miles per hour.
03:46So a big part of the country dealing with quite a lot of wind.
03:49Yes, some power outages.
03:51Yes, some travel disruptions.
03:53And certainly some bumpy rides for anybody who's flying.
03:56All right, just a quick reminder for people, John.
03:59Multiple ways to receive watches and warnings.
04:00That's the key as we head into the rest of the evening.
04:03It sure is.
04:04This is very important.
04:05This is one of the days in which we ask people to be extra aware.
04:09Let your friends and family know.
04:11Great time to download the AccuWeather app.
04:13It's free.
04:14Make sure push notifications are turned on.
04:16We deliver those warnings for your community on average faster than any source.
04:20I always stress this because it literally can save your life.
04:24Imagine being able to recommend that to somebody you love.
04:27All right, thanks, John.
04:29We're going to send things back over to Jeff.
04:32And actually, in a little bit here, a few seconds, we're going to head to break on the network.
04:35But we'll continue our coverage on YouTube.
04:37So we're going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be
04:37going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to be going to
