00:02I was inspired by a lot of science fiction films I saw as a kid from the 1970s
00:08and these kind of illustrated books that I had as a kid
00:12which were done by artists like Chris Voss, Peter Elson
00:17they were done watercolor and marker
00:20before the age of computer graphics
00:23and they took place in these kind of daylight settings
00:27and I hadn't seen a science fiction film in the daylight on earth in a while
00:34and I thought it would be an interesting world to go back and explore
00:37and when I saw images of Iceland
00:40I instantly knew that that was the landscape of this movie
00:46and seeing elements of our world poking up through the black sands of Iceland
00:52was a very haunting but beautiful landscape to tell this story
01:00I wanted Jack to be in a vehicle that would put the audience kind of in the seat next to
01:08him
01:09it had to be something that had tremendous visibility
01:11and really showed the audience this world that he was exploring
01:15so I'd seen an image and was familiar with the Bell 47 helicopter
01:19which is one of the earliest helicopter designs
01:22but it has this big glass bubble on the front
01:24and just gives this incredible visibility when you're flying around
01:28so that was kind of the inspiration
01:30that Bell 47 helicopter kind of crossed with the most modern fighter jet
01:37and I felt that's where the bubble ship lived
01:39so I did a couple very rudimentary images of this kind of glass ball on a stick with these two
01:45engines
01:46and then sat down with my designers
01:49Darren Guilford and Daniel Simon
01:51and said how do we make this feel like something that really flies?
01:57How do we make this as real as possible?
01:59How do we make it move in a way that we've never seen an aircraft move before?
02:06and we spent six months, nine months designing it
02:09and then another six months building it
02:11and to have something like that full scale
02:15I think gave it a reality in the film
02:17that's really important in movies like this
02:19you have to believe that what you see on screen is really there
02:26Tom and I do a commentary on the film
02:28which you'll hear kind of a lot of the discussions we were having
02:32both before and during making the picture
02:34the kind of concepts we are dealing with
02:39from a more character point of view
02:41what characters are thinking about
02:43what they're feeling
02:43what the idea of scenes are
02:46so you get like a little kind of behind the scenes
02:48look at the conversations that Tom and I were having on set
02:50while making the movie
02:51and what we were striving for
02:56as far as kind of behind the scenes
02:58you'll see
02:59you know everything from the design of the film
03:01to the production of the soundtrack
03:05what it's like to shoot on location in Iceland
03:08the amount of people required to bring a movie like this to life
03:13you know for people who really want to learn about making film
03:16I think it's a really interesting kind of behind the scenes peek at it
03:23well you'll see it on the blu-ray
03:24it's a great scene
03:26we actually captured that moment
03:28where he walked on the stage
03:29and saw it all together for the first time
03:31he's a real aviation nut
03:34he's a pilot
03:34he's got a couple planes himself
03:36and flies himself
03:38so I think he really appreciated
03:40the level of detail that we put into it
03:43to make it feel as real as possible
03:46and I knew they had to have
03:48they had to be characters
03:49even though they're these kind of mechanical objects
03:53I wanted them to have personality
03:56so that combination of kind of the design of them
03:59the way they move
04:00but also the way they sound
04:02was something I spent a lot of time on
04:04kind of trying to bring them to life
04:05thank you
