Mike Schopp and the Bulldog share their first thoughts upon hearing of the report that the Buffalo Bills are signing pass rusher Bradley Chubb to a three-year contract.
Transcript
00:00Marcel-Louis Jacques, ESPN, widely reported that the Bills are signing Bradley Chubb,
00:10who may have been, I'm sure Marcel is correct, the best Dolphins pass rusher.
00:16Was he good? I'm sure we're going to hear a lot of different, a range of opinions.
00:21Was he good? Is he good?
00:23And is he worth the money?
00:24Is this a good idea?
00:25The money is pretty modest, by edge rusher standards.
00:32It's not even $15 million a year, at the face value.
00:37Three for $43.5, I think I saw maybe it can incentivize to $52 or something.
00:44So it's a little like, it's sort of like a Josh Palmer, you know what I mean?
00:51Like a similar level move at receiver last year.
00:54Bigger name.
00:56Sure, I guess. Yes.
00:59Why is it a bigger name?
01:00Well, he was a high pick and he was famously traded.
01:04You know, the trade Miami made to get him has been kind of laughed at, I think, for years.
01:11They overpaid in that trade.
01:13That doesn't make him a bad player.
01:15It just, you know, makes him someone who was traded for maybe more than he should have been.
01:18Um, so yeah, he's, I think, you know, his name more than Josh Palmer, but in the marketplace, I'm just
01:25saying they're similar.
01:27They're middle, middle class moves to me.
01:30Uh, despite the name recognition, the money's not, you know, it's, it's half of what the top guys are getting,
01:36which is the middle class to me.
01:38So it's not, you know, it's not a league minimum far from it, but it's also not, Oh my God,
01:45they got a guy, you know, I think he'll help them, but I don't know that it will be dramatic.
01:53That's how I would look at it.
01:54I worry about what he's got, what he's got left.
01:57Well, I wanted to compare it with DJ more, but it's not a trade.
02:01So there's no quality draft pick going away in this move.
02:06Um, you know, it's a typical free agent move and free agent moves are often, especially in a world where
02:12the money is always going up.
02:13I mean, that's only, it's not even 15 million a year.
02:16I mean, what that would have meant, you know, 10 years ago or something, I guess that's just not relevant,
02:21but.
02:22But it's just, it feels like another.
02:26Okay.
02:27I mean, a guy that's probably.
02:30Is that, is this unfair past his prime?
02:32I mean, he's been in the league eight years.
02:34He missed it.
02:35He missed a season to an injury just two seasons ago, 2024.
02:39Yeah.
02:39He's also the player, the Broncos picked in 2018 when they could have picked Allen.
02:44Right.
02:45At five overall.
02:46And there was some speculation that Denver would.
02:48Yeah.
02:48He was the player that was on the board that prohibited Denver from making the trade.
02:55The story goes that the bills were set to trade with Denver, but they told the bills, there's all player
03:00that if he's there, we're not doing this.
03:03And that ended up being Bradley Chubb.
03:05So they made that selection and the bills pivoted to trading up, I think to seven, right.
03:09With Tampa Bay.
03:12So, yeah, I mean, I know that we, this news landed on us right as we were going to break
03:17last segment.
03:19You know, is, is he good?
03:22He's, he's good.
03:23I don't know that he's a meter mover that he's, he's, he's impactful.
03:26It's, you know, you hope to get more out of him than you got out of Bosa.
03:30I know that I'd hope to get more than one hour out of Max Crosby speculation, by the way.
03:36Right.
03:36But I don't know that I will anticipate him being much more impactful than that.
03:43Even, and Bosa started out really well and then just went away as the year went on.
03:49Um, so hopefully you get better than that, but they definitely needed to do something.
03:54And this is definitely something, you know, I don't think today could have gone by and
04:01this would have been another name.
04:02Like if he signed that contract, Bradley Chubb did with new England or whatever, some other
04:07team, you're like, that's another guy you could have used.
04:11Like we're at the point here in this free agency where, you know, the, the, the, a lot
04:17of the best ideas, the big money guys all are gone already.
04:22And this is one of the last guys I think that was still out there that at least has some
04:27name recognition that would be worth even this contract.
04:30So it's not, it's worth doing.
04:32I just, I'm not gonna, I'm not, it's not Von Miller to me.
04:37Like Von Miller was, was, you know, a different idea, much bigger money when the bills did that.
04:43And I know it didn't end well, but it started out really well.
04:46I'm not sure that I would have the same feeling about this guy.
04:50I mean, I don't want to overdo it, but to some extent or another, the bills are in this
04:55cycle, especially at like that position, it seems where they are chasing hope in free
05:05agency and paying, whether or not it's top of the market, it's still like a big investment
05:10here.
05:10It's a big choice.
05:11They're just, they're spending and spending to try to find an answer.
05:15I don't even know if this player is, I mean, it's a three-year contract might, would you
05:21expect to see him for three years?
05:22I mean, right.
05:23So we're, we're in this cycle of trying to buy the answer on the edge.
05:30And, you know, ideally, of course, this is, everybody knows this, you would draft that
05:34player.
05:35You'd be able to, for as much time as, or draft capital as they spent on the front seven on
05:41defense, like that's what you want here is for the bills to already have maybe even a
05:46better version of this player and cheaper, but they don't.
05:50And as often as they've tried to accomplish that, they're now again going into the market
05:57to try to find somebody to fill the space for a year or two.
06:00Maybe.
06:01It's one of the reasons why when you asked me yesterday, would I have made the Baltimore
06:05trade for Max Crosby?
06:06I said, yes, because as much as I would be pained to give up those assets.
06:11And as much as you might worry about a guy who's 28 at the time of the trade, going to
06:15be 29 by the time the season begins, I know I'm getting someone, I mean, anything can go
06:21wrong.
06:22Anyone can get hurt.
06:23Anything can derail.
06:24Right.
06:24But there's a certain level of expectation you'd have with a player that is at, you know,
06:35throwing, I'm not just, I'm not just hoping that I'm going to get a return to form or impactful.
06:40I'm expecting it.
06:42I'm paying for it through the nose with draft picks and with the money.
06:46This is, this is just, I hope it works.
06:51Yeah.
06:51Right.
06:51I mean, and you could say that again about anything you do in pro sports, you hope it
06:56works, but there's, you know, more expectation on a more sure thing.
07:01This is not that this is a lot of basically what they're doing.
07:05They've been doing.
07:05Does it take a new question to think about?
07:09Does it take edge?
07:12It pushes it down, at least in the draft.
07:14You still, I mean, I don't want to both sides of my mouth here.
07:17I mean, the bill should still want to find an answer at that position.
07:20It's supposed to be rich this year.
07:22I would not rule out them drafting an edge at 26 with this move being made.
07:25That feels right to me.
07:26Because you, you need, you need more than one guy there.
07:29And right now they just don't have, they're, they're, they're not very flush there at all.
07:35So, um, no, this does not to me, you know, whereas I would say DJ more removes, I see
07:44that happen.
07:45The cost paid the contract, what he is as a player.
07:48I agree.
07:48I'm not drafting a receiver at 26.
07:50Would do I, could I make the case for it?
07:52Sure.
07:53But are they going to do it?
07:54No, I would not say the same thing about edge because of this move.
07:57I think that would still be very much in play for them at 26.
08:01Receiver could be too.
08:02I just, I don't happen to believe that they would double down on that edge.
08:07I think that that is still very much in the window.
08:10Me too.
08:11That feels right to me.
08:13I said about more, no way are they drafting a receiver now in the first round.
08:17They don't have a second now.
08:18Right.
08:18So I think that's out too many other needs.
08:21That's still one.
08:23Um, and I think I would say the same that I wouldn't rule it out.
08:27Part of it, part of it is what I've heard about the draft too.
08:30Like that it's distribution of talent.
08:33You might be able to do pretty well drafting an edge at 26.
08:35Yeah.
08:35Uh, even if he has short arms, right, right, right, right.
08:40I don't find any Jim Leonard overlap.
08:44It's a guy who's been with Denver Chubb, but with the dolphins for three or four seasons
08:50now.
08:50Right.
08:51So not while Leonard Leonard was not, and he wasn't in Denver until two seasons ago.
08:57He's had two years with the Broncos.
08:58So I don't find any overlap there.
09:00Although there probably are position coaches that had Chubb in Denver.
09:04It might've been, you know, people that Leonard would have consulted and, you know, had relationships
09:10with.
09:11So maybe there's a little bit indirectly between the new defensive coordinator and Bradley
09:16Chubb.
