Nate Geary and Sal Capaccio continue to preview the Bills huge divisional matchup with the New England Patriots this afternoon. The guys start off by discussing just how high the stakes are for the Patriots in this game, and Sal explains why the Bills could put the Pats in a SERIOUS hole in the division race with a win this afternoon. They highlight the struggles for QB Drake Maye as he has gotten off to a very ugly start to his third year.

00:00All right, welcome back live from Wings of Hope, getting you ready for today's 1 p.m. kickoff between the

00:17This opening segment of Countdown to kickoff is brought to you by Hamburg Overhead Door, over-delivering all over Western
00:23New York.
00:24Sal Capaccio joins me live now from the press box at New Highmark Stadium.
00:30Sal, good morning to you. This game has, I don't know, kind of all week been about...
00:36Just as you started talking to me, they started doing a test up in the press box. Give me one
00:39second.
00:39Oh, you're good. You're good.
00:41You can hear that, right? It's like being at an airport.
00:43A little bit I can hear it.
00:44Let me look at my other earpiece in. Go ahead, Nate. I can hear you better now, buddy.
00:47So, no worries. No worries, Sal.
00:49I was saying, in the lead-up to this game, all week, Sal, the story's been a lot about what
00:54is wrong with the Patriots.
00:56And, I don't know, by the end of this game, I think whether the...
01:00Basically, the only outcome, I think, for me, Sal, that the Bills are kind of talked about as the team,
01:05is if the Bills were to win a really close game and find a way to win at the end.
01:10Otherwise, it just feels like the storyline will be about the New England Patriots at the end of this game.
01:14Win or lose, because of who they've been through three weeks and who I think a lot of people thought
01:19they would be coming into this season.
01:21Yeah, I think it goes, if you're talking about a national level, of course, right?
01:24Where, what's the story?
01:26There has been a story all week with the Patriots and what they're going through with their quarterback, obviously, mostly.
01:33And then, obviously, some injuries.
01:34But, I think that's because, you know, the Bills right now, they're the team that's expected to win.
01:38If the Bills go out there and just take care of business and win by 10 points, it's ho-hum.
01:41The Bills took care of business.
01:42That's not a story, unless something either really crazy bad or really crazy good happens, right?
01:46And then it becomes a story.
01:47But you're right.
01:48It's about the Patriots and where do they go from here.
01:50I mean, you do the math on this real quick, Nate.
01:52Think about this, all right?
01:53If the Bills win today, whether it's by one point or 20 points, doesn't matter.
01:57If they win today, they go to 4-0.
01:58The Patriots would drop to 1-3.
02:00The Bills would also have the head-to-head.
02:02So, they'd be three and a half games back, right?
02:05Because of the head-to-head.
02:06We're in week four.
02:08The only way you could pass them is by gaining three-plus games on them.
02:11And they don't play in the time period.
02:12So, that takes you to week five.
02:14That takes you to week six.
02:15That takes you to week seven.
02:17That takes you to week eight.
02:18The Bills have a bye week in there.
02:19So, that actually takes you week nine.
02:20We would be talking about getting to week nine.
02:23And that would only be if the Patriots won every game and the Bills lost every game
02:27before they'd even have a chance to overtake them.
02:29Yeah, and listen.
02:30That's how much you can bury them, kind of, sort of, today for a while, right?
02:34Really kind of put them a little bit on, you know, life support, if you will, when it
02:39comes to the division.
02:39It would feel like the inverse, say, of last season.
02:42Just the Bills seemingly chasing the Patriots ever since that, was it week five loss last
02:48week or last year at home?
02:50Week four this year, it does feel similar in terms of stakes, right?
02:54I mean, the Bills going into this game 3-0.
02:57So, last year, into that week five game, the Patriots were coming in at two and two with
03:02a tough loss early in the season to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
03:05I think it lost to the Raiders, too, last year.
03:07Like, it was a weird start to the season.
03:08And then, we know what the Patriots did.
03:10They got on that run.
03:11They get to a Super Bowl.
03:13And, honestly, Sale, I do wonder, and obviously, a lot of our conversations today for the rest
03:19of the season in terms of the national media is going to be about Drake May and what
03:22is wrong with Drake May, especially if this isn't a get-right game for Drake May.
03:26Some of the numbers, Sale, I think are really standing out to me.
03:31And some of it on Drake May, some of it not.
03:33But not for nothing, Sale, through three games, no Patriots pass catcher, in terms of receivers,
03:39have a touchdown.
03:39No receivers are receiving a touchdown this year.
03:42They have one passing touchdown from Drake May through three games.
03:45One.
03:46This was last year, the quarterback with the number one EPA per play last year in the
03:51regular season.
03:51He is 28th through three games, Sale.
03:54This isn't just, hey, looks like a little regression.
03:58This looks like a real cliff that Drake May has fallen off of.
04:01And I don't know if it's the eye test, the stats, but for the first time, it's looking
04:06like they're sort of meshing the eye test and the stats, Sale.
04:09It hasn't looked good.
04:10And when you look on paper, it hasn't been good for the third-year player in Drake May.
04:15Yeah, I mean, to go a little farther on your stats, too, you look down the board right
04:18now.
04:19Granted, I understand some of this is game script.
04:20Some of this is, you know, the way they want to philosophically play.
04:23But he is right now 17th in the league in completion percentage at less than 64%.
04:30He is 25th in the league in yards, throwing for less than 800 yards.
04:34If you want to go by quarterback rating, whatever that means to you, he's 27th in the league by
04:38a long margin, by the way.
04:4058.6 is his rating.
04:4158.6.
04:42That's his rating right now.
04:44I go back to the last seven games, Nate.
04:46Now, think about this.
04:47Seven games is three games this year.
04:49Plus playoffs.
04:50Playoffs last year.
04:52Ten interceptions, nine fumbles.
04:55And I've been saying on WGR all week, in case people haven't heard, I went back and
04:59dug through the stats on that.
05:02The last player to have a seven-game stretch at any point over a season or combined seasons,
05:08playoffs, everything, to have ten interceptions and nine fumbles was Jameis Winston seven
05:13years ago in his 30-for-30 season.
05:1530-30 season.
05:17So that's the kind of erratic play right now that you're getting from Drake May.
05:22And we all kind of saw that maybe the shoulder was bothering him.
05:25It seemed like that first Wednesday night, you're like, why isn't he throwing the ball?
05:28Why isn't he zip on it?
05:29And then second week, same thing happens against Pittsburgh.
05:31He throws a couple flutters.
05:33And you're like, what is going on here?
05:35They were steadfast in saying he's fine.
05:37He's healthy.
05:37He's, there's no shoulder injury.
05:39Well, then what happens this week?
05:41Shows up on the injury report with a right shoulder injury.
05:44And the only way that that makes sense to me is he had to get hurt in Sunday's game against
05:48Jacksonville because you've been telling us that there is no injury.
05:51Well, guess what?
05:51They came out and said, oh yeah, he got hurt in Sunday's game against Jacksonville.
05:54Now, maybe I missed it.
05:55I don't know exactly what play they might've said it was on.
05:58I do think, I think he did get thrown down once.
06:00I'm not really sure.
06:00It just feels like it's now coming to a point where they're kind of letting everybody know
06:06that his shoulder might be bothering him because they're kind of protecting him a little bit,
06:10if that makes sense.
06:11A hundred percent.
06:12And Sal, listen, I think it's easy to make this all about the quarterback, right?
06:16And his struggles, the numbers bear it out.
06:19Again, the eye test bears it out.
06:20This is a Patriots offense sale through three games.
06:23It's averaging 12 points per game.
06:26It just is.
06:27It's so, it's such a dramatic shift from what we saw them do last year.
06:32They're averaging less than a point per drive.
06:33It's crazy.
06:34It's historically, their numbers, I think it's 0.91 or 0.97, one or the other.
06:39But either way, it's the lowest amount of a team for three games since Zach Wilson's New York Jets.
06:45For the first three games of the year, I believe.
06:47If you're talking about University of Knowledge, Sal, that's a little University of Knowledge for you.
06:52It's brought to you by Houghton University.
06:53Discover an affordable, Christ-centered education right here in Western New York.
06:57You're just totally right, Sal.
06:58It's jarring to see a team that dominated offensively last year have their problems defensively but found ways to win.
07:06And it's, to me, Sal, been against cover six, which I was saying this to Joe in the first hour
07:11of pregame.
07:12It's a little bit of the Sean McDermott blueprint last year.
07:15He struggled in the second half to the adjustments that Sean McDermott made to that Patriots offense last year.
07:22And really, from the second half on, it wasn't the same level of success.
07:26And then, obviously, the playoffs.
07:27But their struggle, Sal, have largely come against cover six, which is really a McDermott staple.
07:32I thought it was really interesting when you kind of go back and you're trying to figure out, well, where
07:37did the struggle start?
07:38Obviously, last year in the playoffs.
07:40But really, dating back to the second half of that second Bills game where the Bills have that comeback, it
07:45has not been the same for Drake May.
07:47And, listen, Sal, I think it's easy in the NFL when you have elite-level quarterback play to just assume
07:53that when a quarterback plays at an elite level, that is who he will be for the rest of his
07:57career.
07:57And not everybody is Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson or this MVP-level type player.
08:03But I do think the quarterback is always going to get the most, you know, flack during a loss or
08:09when they're losing.
08:09He's going to always get the most praise when they're winning.
08:12I just think that looking at Drake May as the sole issue right now with the Patriots offense is overlooking
08:19the issues right now they have at play call.
08:21And, I don't know, Sal, to me they've become a very predictable offense, especially early on in the first two
08:27games.
08:28When you saw Matt Collins on the field, Sal, you could almost guarantee they were running the football.
08:33Now, because of injuries, Matt Collins on the field doesn't necessarily give you the giveaway because he's got to go
08:39out there.
08:39He's their leading receiver, Sal.
08:41Matt Collins.
08:43Yeah, they like to throw to their tight ends and their running backs as well.
08:47And without A.J. Brown, it just makes it a lot more difficult.
08:49They don't have a Nico Collins.
08:52They don't have an Amon Ross St. Brown.
08:53With all due respect to Matt Collins, who has played very well, and he was a nice player here in
08:57Buffalo, and he did a nice job for them last year.
08:59He is not at the level of receiver as those guys.
09:01Let's just explain real quick a cover six area.
09:04People are listening maybe going, what is a cover six?
09:06We can say that all we want.
09:08Cover six is what we call traditionally quarter-quarter-half, okay?
09:11So what happens is when the quarterback drops back, a lot of times you'll hear cover three,
09:16which means everybody in the secondary, the two corners in the safety, each have a third of the field.
09:20So if you divide that up, one corner has a third deep.
09:22The safety has the middle third deep.
09:23The other corner has a third deep.
09:25You could say cover four, which is you drop another safety in there.
09:28Each guy has a quarter of the field deep.
09:30That's more of a long yardage situation.
09:32Keep everything in front of you.
09:33Don't get beat.
09:33Four guys deep.
09:34Each guy has a quarter.
09:35Okay, cover six is three guys who are back, but what you do is two of them have a quarter
09:40of the field.
09:41The other has a full half of the field, and the way it works is when you have more receivers,
09:46let's say three receivers on one side, that's where you'll get your quarter and your quarter.
09:50And then where the tight end is, that's where you get your half.
09:52So Drake May is apparently from a lot of the film analysis is struggling with this particular concept.
09:58And by the way, that also includes linebackers dropping a little bit, covering the flats.
10:02But it's essentially where I have my main options at wide receiver, there's an extra DB there,
10:08and then I've got to go to the half of the field where there's a safety over there covering the
10:11tight end.
10:12And yeah, they like to throw to their tight end.
10:14They like to throw to their running back.
10:15But that's what a cover six is.
10:16And for whatever reason, it feels like he has struggled against that.
10:19I've also seen some analysis and breakdown where he's just not pushing off his back leg like he used to
10:24last year.
10:25There's some things going on with him.
10:26So yeah, it feels like a lot of it's on the quarterback, but you're right.
10:29They also have a lot of issues up front, Nate.
10:32And I don't think he's trusting a lot that what's happening.
10:34They're on their third right guard today, the New England Patriots, right?
10:38They're not running the ball, nearly what Mike Vrabel wants.
10:41And every time, every game, it feels like Ramonja Henderson.
10:44We talk about James Cook having fumbling problems.
10:46Ramonja Stevenson, excuse me.
10:48Stevenson's put the ball on the ground quite a bit.
10:50And there's some trust issues going on, I think, with that whole offense right now.
10:53Well, I love your point in the explanation of cover six,
10:55because I think it's one of those things where you talk about the games that defensive coordinators play against quarterbacks.
11:01And a lot of what they do, Sal, is you want to try to disguise coverages, right?
11:04And a cover six, if you can make that pre-snap look like one, right?
11:09If it looks like cover two, but it's really cover six, that's how you can create a little mismatch and
11:14do those games pre-snap.
11:15Like, to me, last week, one of the games I thought that Jim Leonard did against the Chargers and gets
11:20that interception,
11:21the C.J. Gardner-Johnson interception, they're running inverted cover two.
11:25So it looks like a cover three, but the way that the Bills are able to run it,
11:29and teams are starting to do that more across the league.
11:31It's what makes, Sal, to me, quarterbacking in the NFL so difficult.
11:35It's not just what you're doing at the line of scrimmage pre-snap, but then it's post-snap, right?
11:39You can set yourself up great.
11:40And Josh Allen, Sal, talks about this all the time, where in pre-snap,
11:44you think you're getting the look you have for a perfect play.
11:46It's a zone play.
11:47You've got a zone beater.
11:48Then the defense switches to man.
11:49Well, then, you've got to sort of adjust, and I think the Bills and what Drake May did really well
11:54last year
11:55is when defenses were doing the pre- to post-snap games, Drake May was able to find the solution,
12:00even if it meant not throwing the football but running the football.
12:03And I have not, and we have not seen Drake May as effective running the football.
12:07And that's why, to me, Sal, I do wonder if today we see more of Drake May's legs.
12:11Because I think when in doubt, if you're an athletic quarterback and you're struggling,
12:15especially with confidence, throwing the football down the field into tight windows,
12:19a really easy thing for a young quarterback to do, Sal, is just tuck it and run.
12:23Get yards, keep, you know, it's the most outplayed sentence in football,
12:28but staying on schedule.
12:30I think right now, this Patriots office is having a huge issue staying on schedule.
12:35Yeah, and he's actually pretty good at that.
12:37He has five, he averages five runs a game, 15 on the season.
12:41He's run for 5.5 yards a carry, so we might be able to see that.
12:43And then the Bills are missing, or the Bills might be down Christian Benford.
12:45We can start talking about the Bills a little bit and how they can counteract that.
12:49And just to get into that, we don't know.
12:50I've been, hi to everybody in the chat.
12:53They see me with my binoculars on here.
12:55I've been trying to see if I see Christian Benford.
12:56I don't specifically right now, but my guess is he doesn't play.
12:59But we don't know yet.
13:00We'll find out in 15 minutes.
13:01And without Christian Benford, you know, they don't have, like I said,
13:04this number one elite wide receiver.
13:06But we'll see how the Bills play that with two more inexperienced corners.
13:09Now, of course, Max Harrison's in his second year.
13:11But he missed some time last year.
13:12Davis Enigmund Osen, this would be his first NFL start if Christian Benford doesn't play.
13:16They did elevate Kanai Walker.
13:18We'll see.
13:18If Benford doesn't go, if Kanai Walker goes.
13:21We'll see about to Corey Couch as well to help out there.
13:23Because if you have to have Dee Alford kind of be flexible to play outside in any sort of situation,
13:28you're going to want an extra guy for not only that, but special teams to come in at nickel.
13:33That being said, I agree.
13:34The other thing that's happened with Drake May, to wrap up on them, Nate,
13:37I think your point about adjusting is right.
13:39But I think it's more so of a, with him, you've seen this, I've seen this.
13:44When guys, we saw this with CJ Stroud, I think.
13:47When teams see guys on film for a year and they're like, okay, this guy's really good.
13:52These defensive coordinators say, I don't want to get beat by this guy.
13:54I got to start planning for him.
13:55They get paid a lot of money to come up with a game plan.
13:58And I think we are seeing the league defensively catch up a little bit to Drake May.
14:02And now it's got to be him and Josh McDaniels have to find the counter.
14:05You know, Sal, the cornerback position, I think, is an interesting transition here
14:10and talking more bills as we started this segment talking about the Patriots in this matchup.
14:15You know, with Benford out and no true number one receiver in this Patriots offense sale,
14:21I guess through three games, I've been surprised to see the lack of true man coverage in this defense.
14:27I kind of presumed, and maybe it was wrong of me to presume,
14:30but what Denver is really their core principles in the backfield,
14:34the defensive backfield in their coverage schemes, they love to run man coverage.
14:38The Bills, I assumed under Jim Leonard, would see a big jump in man coverage usage this year.
14:44And it has not really come to fruition.
14:46They are still a very zone-heavy team.
14:48And I wonder, in this matchup against a team that right now is struggling to separate,
14:52Romeo Dobbs comes over from Green Bay, not the true separator type.
14:56Pop Douglas is really their only true separator.
14:58Kyle Williams can create some separation down the field sale.
15:01But only 11% right now of their dropbacks in coverage on defense sale are coming in man coverage.
15:07And I wonder if maybe with Davidson Igbenosin in this game, potentially for an injured Christian Benford,
15:12a guy that they, I think, drafted with an intent to run more man coverage,
15:16or wanting to be able to run more man coverage,
15:18is this the game we see them lean more into that man coverage?
15:22Or is this just going to be a zone-heavy defense moving forward sale?
15:26It's a good question.
15:28I think they're going to stick with kind of what they've been doing here.
15:31And we've seen a lot of zone.
15:32And I think today's the day where maybe you want to do that and, you know,
15:36keep everything in front of you knowing that the Patriots are probably going to want to play that type of
15:39game
15:39where you want to have all eyes on the football because they're going to run the football.
15:42And like you said, I think playing man-to-man lends yourself a little bit to letting quarterbacks escape sometimes,
15:46right, Nate?
15:47Because you're back in your back.
15:48So you might see that.
15:50Speaking of Romeo Dobbs, so he actually, you know, he does have a 24.2 yard per average for catch.
15:58But he had a 63-yarder a couple of games ago, which helps that out a lot.
16:01But he is a guy that they'd like to get downfield a little bit more.
16:03I don't know if they – what I'm wondering about the Patriots and with the Bills is this is a
16:08two-part point.
16:09The Patriots offensive line is banged up.
16:11You got Drake May, who's banged up on the injury report.
16:14And the Bills defensive line is playing really well right now.
16:16Do you want him sitting back there waiting for plays to develop downfield?
16:19I think today is a day where they're going to get – try to get their running backs and their
16:23tight ends involved.
16:24And to me, that means you stick – if you can, you can play man-to-man.
16:28You stick with that zone defense and you just make sure you make tackles and force them to have to
16:31get, you know,
16:32a first down every three plays and third and four, third and five, and you keep them there.
16:37I think, Tussale, a little bit of what they've done in the back end.
16:41This is a young secondary and inexperienced secondary, especially playing together, that's sort of coming together.
16:47And now with Christian Benford out, you've got – I don't want to – you know, Max Harrison's not a
16:52rookie sale.
16:52But he has the experience, essentially, of a rookie.
16:55He did not get the training camp reps last year.
16:57He missed a lot of the season last year and missed some training camp this year as well with some
17:01injuries,
17:02caught back in and struggled in the preseason a little bit.
17:04But I do wonder, Sal, how much they've been able to maybe shift what they wanted to initially do defensively
17:12due to the success they've had on their defensive line.
17:14So I have to imagine if you're – I think we talked a little bit about this last week.
17:17If you're Brandon Bean, how good do you feel about the – because all you hear, Sal,
17:22is the resources the Bills have dumped into this defensive line and they have not gotten return on investment.
17:27First-round picks, second-round picks, trades, whatever it might be, they are seeing the results of a lot of
17:34investment
17:35in this defensive line.
17:36And for whatever reason, the scheme has really unlocked Greg Rousseau, and we're seeing a big jump from Deion Walker.
17:41We still haven't seen Ed Oliver have that big game yet.
17:44It could be today with the matchup at right guard and their third stringer.
17:47But, Sal, I just have to imagine that maybe plans changed a little bit based on how good they have
17:53been up front
17:54on the defensive line.
17:55It's really been a revelation for this team.
17:57Yeah, I think it allows you to do a little bit more, no doubt.
17:59It allows you to be a little more flexible.
18:01I think one thing we learned about Jim Leonard, and he said he was going to do it,
18:04and I think he's done, is highlight his best players.
18:06And that has been Deion Walker and Greg Rousseau, and they've done a great job.
18:11And Greg Rousseau is a different man in this defense.
18:14And I do think it's because even though he's a very good player in Sean McDermott's 4-3,
18:18stagnant, static kind of style, just stay where you are, do a good job against the run,
18:22offer some pass rush help, now he's a little bit more outside.
18:25He's a little wider.
18:26He's standing up.
18:26He's using his length.
18:27And I just think that that's unlocked him a little bit.
18:30And when you can get after the passer like that, then I think it does lend itself to doing
18:34a little bit more on the back end and playing some games if you want.
18:37Maybe that's something they want to do today.
18:38Sal, one more thing before we take a timeout.
18:41We are going to transition, talk a little Bill's offense on the other side.
18:43I want to start with a comment that Joe Brady made early this week to the media talking about,
18:47and I think it was Matt Beauvais that mentioned it.
18:50This was kind of in an unprompted way.
18:51No one asked a question, but wanting to get Ray Davis more involved on the offense.
18:55And involvement can mean a lot of things, Sal.
18:57It doesn't necessarily mean touches, but it sounds like they want to get him on the field more.
19:02And whether that's maybe two running back sets, I don't know how you involve him more, Sal,
19:07because I just think even in his own position groom, I think it's hard to justify getting him on the
19:13field,
19:13especially over James Cook.
19:14But Ty Johnson now being healthy, you see what a healthy Ty Johnson does to this offense,
19:19especially on third down and fourth down.
19:22I understand the maybe want to see more Ray Davis in this offense.
19:26I just don't know where it comes, Sal.
19:30I agree with you.
19:32It's tough to not give the ball to James Cook, right?
19:36And so you can say you put him on the field all you want,
19:38but when you have James Cook, who's playing the way he is, he's the league's leading rusher,
19:41and he's running for 154 last week and so quietly, right?
19:45I mean, every time, it's just hard to take him off the field.
19:48So no doubt about that.
19:49I mean, the Bills are going to try to pick their spots, I think.
19:52I think it's tough on Ray Davis right now.
19:53A, he's got James Cook in front of him.
19:56He's got Ty Johnson as a third down back in front of him.
19:58Do you really want Ty Johnson off the field on third down?
20:00Look what he did last week, right?
20:02You know, you want to make sure that.
20:03And then look what's going on with the kick return situation.
20:05Now you have Greg Dorch, right, who fits in there.
20:09So it's a tough uphill climb for Ray Davis, and I get it.
20:12Like, you know, you want him to not get frustrated.
20:15I'm sure that he wants to be on the field.
20:16There's no doubt about that.
20:18So we'll see if the Bills pick their spots.
20:20And you're right, it was unprompted from Joe Brady to bring up and say,
20:24I've got to get Ray Davis some more touches or more involved.
20:26However, he said it.
20:26Maybe he said more touches.
20:27But what's funny, he said to the media on Monday, I said,
20:30I know that question's probably coming, meaning, like, he sees it.
20:33He hears it.
20:33You know, from the media and us wondering, you know,
20:36hey, what's going on with Ray Davis?
20:37Why isn't he getting the ball?
20:38But I think it's simple math.
20:40You have the league's leading rusher as your number one.
20:43You have a really good third and down back as your number two.
20:45And now you have a kick returner in Greg Dorch as well,
20:47who's eating up that if you want to throw that in the mix.
20:50So we'll see if they do anything today to get him a little bit more involved.
