00:00What kind of an impression do you think DJ Moore made today?
00:05A good one, a good one. I think it was thoughtful. I think he was, he showed he's a high
00:09IQ guy and, you know, I think on and off the field, there was a little bit of banter about,
00:14you know, reading things and relaxation and things like that.
00:16So just, I think he seemed pretty thoughtful, but, you know, I think what's come out in this process, hearing
00:21from people in Chicago and reading things online, linking of DJ Moore, his excitement, like, there was a disconnect there
00:28with him and the Bears.
00:29And that might've come from him and Ben Johnson, but especially when it come from him and Caleb Williams.
00:35And it feels like the divorce was needed in some regard. And this has re-energized him to be in
00:40Buffalo.
00:41So I think that impression came off today, which is here's a guy who really like, he's energized to be
00:47here, a part of this organization, maybe even, you know, a big part of that is away from where he
00:53was.
00:53It wasn't like he talked any smack about Chicago, but it feels like that was something he needed and he
00:59landed in a spot where he's really excited because of who the quarterback is and the winning they've done.
01:04Yeah. I mean, it really stood out to me, not that I didn't know this, knowing, you know, what, what,
01:08you know, where he'd been in his career, Carolina, then Chicago.
01:11But I liked hearing him talk about how last year was his first experience winning in the NFL and like
01:19how since high school.
01:20Right. We were told yesterday from our Bears guest. Yeah.
01:23We've never been on a good team since high school. Right.
01:25And what did, what did he say? Joe Brady says, what did Joe Brady tell you? Just go run.
01:29Get ready to run. Get ready to run. Just get ready to run. Get ready to run. Just same thing
01:33in Carolina.
01:34And he kind of likes that. Right. So it feels to me like, you know, he's on board with Joe
01:38Brady.
01:38He likes Joe Brady as a coach. He's glad he is reunited with Joe Brady at a nice year with
01:42him in Carolina.
01:43So I think like, it feels like it's checking the boxes, you know, for, for, for what he was looking
01:49for, what the bills were looking for.
01:50How, how much, I know it's early here. We're not even into like, you know, guys on the field and
01:55shorts and OTAs or anything.
01:57We have a long way to go. So it'll be time to answer this question in a more informed manner.
02:03But how much do you think them making the move for DJ Moore signifies them wanting to feed, like, how
02:12important is it to them, to Joe Brady, to the offense, to Josh Allen, to have a quote unquote, number
02:17one wide receiver.
02:18Or their actions tell you it mattered. Do you think the, the, the, their actions on the field game plan
02:25scheming will also reflect that?
02:28I do. I don't think it has to reflect it in a hundred targets, right? Maybe that's what he gets.
02:32I'm just saying that, um, or a hundred catches, whatever, however, whatever number you want to use, I guess.
02:36I don't think it has to reflect it in this, these monster numbers. I think the bills recognize what having
02:43a actual number one wide receiver does to your game plan overall, because you can still have a number one
02:49and never everybody eats. Right.
02:50And I think that's where we're trending here, which is, Oh yeah, we got a guy like he's going to,
02:53because of him, everybody else is eating. Right. Something like that.
02:56I think the bills really missed and understood the value of having a guy that other teams had to plan
03:04for the other teams have to game plan for, and that will open up others.
03:08And you guys played the quote earlier, the clip earlier of him talking about it. The question was essentially, and
03:12I think it was something about what does a number one wide receiver look like?
03:15What does that do? Like, what, what is the role? What, what does that entail? And his response was, well,
03:20it doesn't matter if you're the number one receiver and you're not helping everybody else become better.
03:24Like the number one has to help everybody else become better. And if I'm not doing that and everybody else
03:28is in the, none of us are, are thriving. Well, guys, that's right, right down the, everybody eats, you know,
03:32chart, right?
03:33Which is I'm going to do my job as the number one, and that's going to free up Kahlil Shakir
03:36or whoever else is the number three and James Cook. But his job is to, to me as a number
03:42one, still be the primary target on most plays, the primary receiver on a big third down play and catch
03:49down the field when they need it. That's what a number one has to be on this offense.
03:52This was a Zoom call today, right, Sal?
03:55Yes.
03:56What is the status? Like, has he signed his, well, is there even a, there's an extension he's, he's signed
04:00and that's official. And is he in the area? Do you know?
04:06I don't think so, because where was the background was not that, right?
04:09That was home.
04:10Because, because wait, because D Alford was in the media room, I think. So he was.
04:15And Bradley Chubb.
04:17Yeah, so yeah, but I don't believe, so.
04:19Oh, you're right.
04:20Because we weren't, that's right.
04:21So, but he, he, they did execute the trade and I don't think they would make him available to the
04:27media.
04:27Well, yeah, he doesn't have to sign because he's under contract.
04:30Right.
04:30The trade was executed, so therefore he's under contract to the Bills.
04:32There you go, that's what I would say.
04:33Right.
04:33He's under contract to the Bills because the trade was executed.
04:36His contract went.
04:37The Bills would, would definitely not do a media availability with a player like, in this case, D Alford or
04:43Bradley Chubb, unless they actually signed the contract.
04:45They wouldn't do that.
04:46Yes.
04:47I should have remembered because I saw from Catherine Fitzgerald of the news, a picture of DJ Moore with the
04:52bookshelves behind him.
04:54And I'm somebody who like carefully studies the backdrops of like, it's usually media people, podcasters, sometimes athletes.
05:02And I loved his.
05:03It was so, it was cute.
05:05Like, you know, dad, little kid, dad stuff and a couple of trophies and books.
05:10I don't know how much thought went into the layout behind DJ Moore on that picture, but maybe a lot.
05:17Well, she asked him about it.
05:18She did.
05:18She asked him about it.
05:19Oh, okay.
05:20Catherine asked him for the Buffalo News.
05:22She did a great job.
05:22She asked him about the bookshelf.
05:25He said, well, which one do you want to know about?
05:26And he actually talked about, I believe, maybe his late grandparents, maybe.
05:32And I have to remember exactly.
05:33Okay.
05:34One was, he said MVP from week five of 2023.
05:38So I'm guessing was that the, oh, that's the Nickelodeon.
05:42Nickelodeon statue.
05:42Maybe that's what that is, right?
05:43Yeah.
05:44Yeah.
05:44So he talked about like some of the little things on his shelf that meant something to him.
05:48That's super cool.
05:49What a great question.
05:50I love that.
05:51I love her, her Twitter.
05:54Okay.
05:54So Bradley Chubb, D Alford today as well, Sal.
05:57Like, what did you get from them?
06:00Yeah.
06:00D Alford, like, this is a guy, this is right.
06:03This is a guy who's right out of the playbook of what the bills kind of have been about,
06:07which is guys who just have been doubted their whole life.
06:11They had to overcome adversity to get where they are.
06:13I mean, D Alford was playing in the CFL, right?
06:16I mean, this is not a, this is not a player that was highly touted, highly regarded.
06:21Coming out of college.
06:24He, what, how did he enter the, that's right.
06:26He went to the CFL before going to the NFL.
06:28Yes.
06:29He was with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, right?
06:30Then he goes to Atlanta.
06:31He's like, I've been doubted my whole life.
06:33Had to play with a chip on my shoulder.
06:35He's 5'11", 180, right?
06:37He's not the biggest guy.
06:39And he said how excited.
06:41He knows exactly all about the bills, the organization, how the winning that they've done.
06:45Talked about, I really, I really liked, you know, him talking about how much film study he had the week
06:50leading up to Buffalo.
06:51And, you know, that helped him, you know, pick off Josh Allen.
06:54And he said, I'm going to have fun, fun with that in the locker room.
06:56Right.
06:56So that's cool to talk about that.
06:58And, but I think it just comes right out of the, we love players who have a chip on their
07:04shoulder.
07:05They've been doubted and they have something to prove to want to be on the field and helping this football
07:08team.
07:09Right.
07:09Chubb is talking now.
07:11So I'm sure you don't have a lot of feedback on what he's had to say so far, but for
07:17what it's worth, I did like check out where, where I keep my depth chart and outside linebacker.
07:23Right.
07:23Like, so I wonder, Sal, I haven't, I didn't even think to notice here, where, what is Rousseau listed at?
07:29Like, I wonder how they will, yeah, Rousseau is also listed on their depth chart as an outside linebacker now.
07:35So, so that's kind of interesting.
07:37Okay.
07:38So I want everybody to get used to a certain term.
07:41We're going to hear a lot of five man's surface.
07:44It's a new term that you might have heard of or not.
07:47Just what football needs.
07:47Just what we all need.
07:48So go on.
07:50You actually heard this term when Joe Brady was hired and I don't know if people caught it or not.
07:55And you've heard a little bit more since then.
07:57My buddy, Eric Turner, cover one, he talks about it.
07:59And five man's surface is basically five players on the line of scrimmage.
08:05It's really looks like a five, two, even though it's really a three, four in practice, right?
08:10How we think of three, four, how we think of four, three.
08:13So you're talking about having a nose tackle.
08:15You can move him over a little bit.
08:17Whatever it does to be right over the center.
08:18You're having two guys outside of him, but they're not true defensive ends.
08:22They're more, they're outside, but not true defense.
08:24Then your true defensive ends are actually linebackers who walk up to the line of scrimmage.
08:29They are on the line of scrimmage.
08:31That is your outside linebacker.
08:33Really though, a fifth person on either side, you will, that becomes a defensive end slash
08:38outside linebacker.
08:39That is a five man surface.
08:41You're going to hear that term more and more about the Buffalo Bills.
08:44Five man surface.
08:45All right.
08:46Let's have, let's enjoy our summer first before, before my head starts to spin on this one.
08:53Well, how much different with that said, Sal, for Rousseau?
08:56I mean, Chubb has played in this kind of system, really played in this style of defense.
09:01I think last year in Miami, if not even previous to this in Denver, even though Jim Leonard
09:05and he didn't cross paths in Denver for someone like Rousseau, how different a gig is that?
09:11Yeah.
09:12I mean, I think he would be asked to maybe have to, um, you know, kind of drop a little
09:16bit
09:16more, be a little bit more in coverage.
09:18Sometimes it doesn't mean he's chasing around, you know, uh, running backs or tight ends all
09:22day, but he's probably going to have to be able to do that a little bit.
09:24Um, but it's really just still, still coming off the edge.
09:28And because you're at a five man surface, you might have a little bit more room, a little
09:31more spacing.
09:32Um, you know, you still have to play the run, but you might be able to get off a little
09:36bit quicker.
09:37One of the hallmarks of a Denver Broncos defense is ball get off, getting off the ball very,
09:41very quickly.
09:42Nick Benito, um, guys like that, uh, Allen Singleton, those guys, like when they get up,
09:47when they get off the ball, they're known to get off the ball very quickly.
09:49And I think that that will help them do that.
09:51You're going to be in a position where, okay, I'm watching that ball.
09:54I'm just going as soon as it goes, I'm firing.
09:56I'm trying to get to the quarterback.
09:57Um, I'm gonna let the other guys, I have five people coming to the ball.
10:00Now it might only be a four man pressure and that's where you have to drop a little bit.
10:03You're going to play stunts.
10:04What I'm super interested in is, okay, if it's a five man surface like this, what we're talking
10:09about, are you, and you have those two, we're talking Chubb and Rousseau.
10:12What about Michael Hoyt?
10:13Like, what does he do there?
10:14Does he fit in?
10:15You could kick a guy inside.
10:16So you could start playing with your, your players here.
10:19You don't have to have a true, like you don't have to have TJ Sanders or even at
10:25Oliver, you know, probably a bad name to use there as your, you know, guy inside of them.
10:29It could be one of them.
10:30It could be Chubb going inside.
10:31It could be Rousseau going inside.
10:32It could be Hoyt going inside.
10:33That's what a five man surface does for you.
10:35Right.
10:35They're going to be more interchangeable.
10:37Correct.
10:38Yes.
10:38How stark is it to you at this point here now where, you know, the whole week has been
10:44free agency.
10:45Although I know the league year began yesterday at four o'clock.
10:48So, and I know like you give the speech every year, like they can keep adding players,
10:53all that.
10:54Right.
10:54For all the holes that we believe them to have on defense with a new scheme coming in.
11:00And I realized that muddies the water somewhat because we're not exactly positive of what
11:04they may think certain guys that are holdovers can do like Terrell Bernard, for example,
11:09Dorian Williams, whatever.
11:10But looking at their defensive depth chart right now, they've added two guys.
11:15And that, that, I don't know, that just feels like I'm a little shook by that.
11:18I think I might've expected four or a half a dozen new names, you know, not immediate
11:24starters.
11:25I know they couldn't go get like the top guys at every position, but it's kind of a little
11:30stunning to me that there are only two new guys on the defensive side of the ball,
11:34considering everything they've got to sort of get in place.
11:37I agree with you.
11:39I would have expected more by now.
11:40No doubt.
11:41I mean, not only, not only do they only have two new guys, they haven't re-signed anybody,
11:48right?
11:48I'm looking now and I'm like, I don't think they've re-signed any of their free agents
11:53on the defensive side.
11:54They haven't.
11:55So yeah, I mean, that, that is a, well, Sam Franklin, I guess, but he's really a special
11:58teams guy if you want to count him.
12:00So that's number one.
12:02And I guess Federi Mathis early on in free agency, you could count him as well.
12:06Um, and then number two is they still have guys, 11 unrestricted free agents who became
12:12unrestricted free agents.
12:13I said yesterday, they're no longer on contract with the bills, but they were on the team
12:16last year at the end of the year on that side of the ball, just on that side of the
12:19ball.
12:19They only have two on offense, just two that is Brandon cooks and Gabe Davis.
12:23So you want to talk about to underscore your point bulldog.
12:25It's not just that they're going to have to overhaul the defense because of the scheme,
12:28because of the change, because of the coach and what they're doing.
12:30And it's that, yeah, they also have all these guys who are still kind of like, they didn't
12:34resign them.
12:35They're still free agents and they only brought in two guys, whereas the offense has been
12:39largely intact.
