00:42Do you think that even in such a dark place, one person can help other people?
00:51Oh, I think definitely.
00:53I think, you know, having been through what Madeleine's been through,
00:57and been through her own form of grieving process,
01:00she really understands what people who are grieving need.
01:04She's incredibly empathetic and she's the perfect person to help them on their journey.
01:09I think it's not unusual,
01:13because lots of people who have been through a lot of suffering like to help other people.
01:17But I know that people respond to grief in very, very different ways.
01:20And I personally think if I had a loss,
01:23I'd respond more like Howard's character rather than Madeleine.
01:26But I really admire her generosity of spirit.
01:31In the movie, the main character writes to abstract things, love, death and time.
01:38If you could choose one of the three things,
01:42to which one would you write and what would you write?
01:46I would write to love and I'd want to know how to stay in a more loving state,
01:49because I think we're here to give and receive love.
01:52But I think it's one of the hardest things to do,
01:55because I think true love is about being unconditional.
01:58And that's very difficult, you know.
02:02Your character is the one who understands what collateral beauty means.
02:07Did you understand it too? What's collateral beauty for you?
02:11So I didn't understand it before doing the movie,
02:14but the process that I had to go through in the journey,
02:18I had to go in terms of finding Madeleine, understanding her journey,
02:21really helped me understand what that means, you know.
02:24And for me, it means it's really understanding the beauty of life
02:28and that beauty is everywhere in every moment,
02:31despite, you know, you may be going through the most awful time in your life,
02:35but there's still beauty to be found in life.
02:38And life is still supporting you and helping you
02:40and wanting you ultimately to grow from the experience.
02:45and I've really taken that on board in my own life
02:48and I try to see now the gifts in life a lot more.
02:51What's your why? That is the first question of the movie.
02:54Why is fulfillment for me?
02:56I think I'd like it to be kind of family or love,
03:01but if I'm really honest, it's fulfillment.
03:03I love the sense of achievement
03:05and I'm a work course kind of person, you know what I mean?
03:08I love working and I love setting myself goals and reaching them.
03:13and I feel this great sense of fulfillment as a result of that.
03:17How did you reach that intensity with Will Smith?
03:20There's a couple of scenes that are really intense.
03:24So we actually, Will likes to rehearse.
03:28So he asked me to fly to New York to meet him
03:30and to work with David Frankel, our director.
03:33So we spent a couple of days and we went around to the sets
03:36and we looked at the places together
03:38and we worked out our story
03:40and Will is incredibly collaborative
03:42and so that's what really helped us.
03:44But also it's about just being with someone who has a generous spirit
03:47and who is open on the day to working with you.
03:50And that's who Will is.
03:51Okay, thank you.
03:52Thank you very much.
03:53Thank you.
03:53Thank you.
