00:00Rawr! Be-beow! Be-beow! Be-beow!
00:02Playing with your toys again, Chuck?
00:04Yeah! Cotton Candy 5-Hour Energy Flavor is back.
00:07It makes me feel like a kid again. You should try it.
00:10Akh-ba-gosh-in-be-gorn! Wait, David's here!
00:12Oh, there he is!
00:13Be-beow!
00:22All right, well, Jason, maybe take some tips from this guy.
00:25He is coping with his gambling addiction.
00:27Okay, who is he?
00:28He's in Hawaii.
00:30Sure.
00:30His name is Buddy Wiggins.
00:32Easy.
00:32What does Buddy like to play?
00:33Uh, Buddy doesn't like to play anything anymore,
00:36but in his spare time, he, instead of thinking about gambling,
00:39he teaches people how to surf for free.
00:41Just search something to do.
00:42So he stops thinking about gambling.
00:44Well, he's got to keep his mind occupied.
00:46I don't know how to surf.
00:47No, you don't.
00:48Well, it's something else!
00:50Never surf at the moment.
00:50To play basketball, then.
00:52Yeah, you want to see how to miss every shot you take?
00:55Come on, I'll teach you.
00:56Come on over, I'll show you.
00:57You can teach kids, like, the fundamentals.
01:00And then at some point, they'll have to go to a real coach.
01:03No, he's no Buddy Wiggins.
01:04We're picking up on something.
01:06I have to care.
01:06He's no Buddy Wiggins.
01:07Here's the story from CBS News.
01:11Buddy Wiggins of Honolulu, Hawaii.
01:14Excuse me.
01:14It has come to this.
01:15Can I bother you for a second?
01:16No, I'm okay with thinking.
01:18Soliciting strangers.
01:19Oh, no.
01:19The end result of a years-long sports gambling addiction.
01:24Yeah, I finally came to a point where I lost pretty much everything.
01:27And I'm on my hands and knees, and I'm crying.
01:30And that's when this 32-year-old pool cleaner says he heard a voice.
01:35Oh, no.
01:35A calling to take his life in a radically different direction.
01:39Oh, no, no, no.
01:40What Buddy felt called to do was to come down here to Waikiki Beach,
01:45to go up to total strangers who'd never surfed before, who often never wanted to surf,
01:51and then ask them to surf.
01:54If we offered you a free surf lesson, what would you say?
01:57Buddy calls it the First Wave Project.
01:59Let's do it.
02:00Twice a week now, he and a couple buddies extend their free offer
02:04to the most unlikely surfers they can find.
02:07Today, it's Michael Peralta of Carson City, Nevada.
02:11He's a former lightweight boxer.
02:13And if early indications are correct, and he's a lightweight surfer.
02:19We'll get back to him in a minute.
02:21But first, let's hear some success stories.
02:25Please.
02:25The energy that they had made you feel like you could do exactly what he was saying.
02:29That's it.
02:30And when I did, I'm all, ooh.
02:32Stop it.
02:32This is nice.
02:33That's amazing.
02:34They gave me a confidence that I haven't had since I was in my 30s.
02:38What?
02:38Come on, buddy.
02:39It's great.
02:39It's a confidence that often lasts a lot longer than the ride.
02:44How do you explain that this carries on for so long in their lives?
02:48I think when you overcome things that you never thought was possible,
02:52you start thinking, okay, what's next?
02:54So far, Buddy and his team have helped about a hundred people
02:58ride that wave of inspiration, including Michael,
03:03the guy who at first couldn't even lie on the board,
03:06What the hell?
03:07eventually did this.
03:09Let's go!
03:10Come on!
03:10Come on!
03:11All thanks to that mysterious voice in Buddy's head
03:13that told him to tackle his addiction
03:15How's that?
03:16by sharing his passion.
03:18Weird as that sounds.
03:20Yay!
03:20Especially in a time where I'm struggling financially.
03:23Like, why for free, you know?
03:25Have you figured out an answer to that?
03:27The feeling of giving, you know?
03:30The feeling of giving.
03:33Oh, shut up.
03:33Oh, man.
03:34Best wave ever.
03:38Um, I'll tell you this right now.
03:40If I ever stood up on a surfboard, everything about me would change.
03:44What do you mean?
03:45You'd take on a whole new, like, sense of kindness?
03:47I'd have one of those, like, willy-style vehicles.
03:50Oh, you'd be like, you'd go full surfer mode.
03:53I would be listening to Beach Boys nonstop.
03:57Some Jan and Dean.
03:58Let's go surfing now!
04:00Everybody's learning now!
04:01Come on and safari with me!
04:03Non-stop.
04:04And, uh, that's it.
04:06I'd be like, yeah!
04:08I caught a cool wave!
04:10Just once, right?
04:11Like, once you got up on a board once for two seconds.
04:14Yeah, I was like, killer, you know?
04:15Change your life.
04:16Change your life.
04:17There's a surfboard hanging out of the back of your ride now.
04:19I'd talk to you all the time.
04:21But there's nowhere to surf around here.
04:22Basically, like I was Patrick Swayze in Point Break.
04:26Oh, you'd be all in.
04:27All in, dude!
04:29All in, dude!
04:29You'd shut up on a wave!
04:31Yep.
04:32Yeah.
04:32You're unstoppable!
04:33I understand what they're saying, like, the confidence.
04:36The confidence?
04:37Would you just carry your board with you?
04:39I could see you having your arm bringing it in here.
04:41I'd be waxing it in here!
04:43Leaning it up.
04:44You got a seashell necklace.
04:45Oh, my God!
04:46Puka, Puka shop!
04:46Puka, I've already got it!
04:47I've already got it!
04:48Flops!
04:49He didn't race the flops!
04:50I'll just put it on!
04:50Hang loose, yeah!
04:52Yeah, bro!
04:53Total hang loose!
04:54Oh, my God, guys!
04:56That'd be salt life and all that stuff, man!
04:59I'll teach ya!
05:00You'll be my first one!
05:02Holy cow!
05:02Have you surfed before?
05:03No!
05:05When I overcome my gambling addiction, I'll just try to teach people how to surf.
05:09When I overcome it.
05:10I won't.
05:11I don't have those voices.
05:12I might say, play another one.
05:14You're gonna win this time.
05:14Oh, my God.
05:15You haven't hit rock bottom yet.
05:17That's the addiction button.
05:18You were so close.
05:21You can't win if you don't play.
05:22You're not teaching anyone anything.
05:23You can't win if you don't play.
05:25Oh, my God, that's bad advice.
05:26Is it?
05:27It's not great.
05:28So, Surfer Chuck, you'd basically just be like Rowan.
05:30You'd just talk like.
05:31Yeah!
05:32Oh, yeah.
05:33That's when you talk like that.
05:34Like, dude!
05:36He would change.
05:37He'd be like, I can't talk like that anymore.
05:39You stole his band.
05:40It's like my dad's a surfer.
05:42It's so embarrassing.
05:43I just leave everything behind.
05:45I just go and I've seen how they live out there on the West Coast.
05:49They just live in a van.
05:50They do, yeah.
05:51They don't care about anything.
05:52No.
05:52It is a lifestyle for sure.
05:54They live in a van, dude.
05:55Yes.
05:56They don't care.
05:57They got a wetsuit and a board and some wax and a van.
06:01But you don't like people seeing you in your wetsuit.
06:04Listen, he's halfway there.
06:05I mean, I've already had a wetsuit.
06:07He's got a wetsuit.
06:08I've got a wetsuit.
06:08He's got all this stuff.
06:09Yeah.
06:10Oh, my God.
06:11Never thought about how close I am.
06:12You're so close to being a surfer.
06:14Oh, my God, dude.
06:16You got to get a hair transplant then.
06:18Oh, for sure.
06:20Oh, my God.
06:20You got to have long, blind.
06:22Yeah, Spicoli.
06:23I got to have the Spicoli.
06:25Oh, guys, it would change everything.
06:28I mean, it would change everything.
06:30I hate to say it.
06:31I just know it.
06:33I saw some very rotund men.
06:35Yeah, they get up on that.
06:37There were some chubby guys that got out.
06:39No problem.
06:39I would have never thought.
06:41I mean, I don't know what kind of special boards they're on.
06:43You know, extra wide.
06:46I'd like that, though.
06:47I think I like that.
06:48Extra wide boards.
06:49Big and tall surfboards.
06:50I need them.
06:51I need them.
06:53I need them.
06:53It's got to be.
06:54It has to be.
06:55Well, we'll see if Chuck leads the surf life.
06:58Look out.
06:59Dangerous.
06:59If he ever gets up on a board, we're in trouble.
