00:03Hello and welcome. Good evening. You're watching Super 6 here on India Today. I'm Akshita Nanda
00:07Gopal here on India Today. We're continuing to get you all the latest updates on the West Asia
00:12conflict. 10 days of the war raging on and unfortunately it looks like this is the new
00:18normal. So what do we have lined up for you in this edition of Super 6? We're going to be
00:22talking
00:23about the big headline that's emerged from Iran. Even as America has been constantly talking of a
00:28regime change. Donald Trump constantly reiterating that the leader, the supreme commander of Iran
00:34has to be someone he agrees to. Now there's been a change of God. For the first time ever what
00:40we
00:40refer to very often in domestic politics is sunrise. The rise of the sun, the next gen has happened in
00:47Iran. It's been confirmed that Mujtaba Khamenei is the next supreme leader of Iran. The announcement
00:53has been made. What are the repercussions? Who is Mujtaba? We're going to be breaking down all of
00:58that for you over the next 30 minutes. Let's begin with the top 10 headlines of the hour.
01:08And as we get you the top 10 headlines are off today. Number one, days after killing of Ayatollah
01:15Ali Khamenei, his second son Mujtaba has been named as the new supreme leader of Iran. Israel has warned
01:22to Mujtaba Khamenei, saying Iran's next ruler will also be targeted.
01:30A new video put out by Iranian media has emerged as key evidence that a US Tomahawk missile
01:36likely hit the Iranian school where 175 children were killed, particularly young girls. The video
01:43shows a massive blast at an Iranian army base very close to the school.
01:50The government has put out a detailed West Asia war response. External Affairs Minister
01:55Jai Shankar has echoed Prime Minister Modi's stance on the need for dialogue to resolve the
02:00war. Jai Shankar has also asserted that West Asia is key for energy in India.
02:07Major shake-up in crude oil prices amid the West Asia war. Brent crude oil is over $100 a barrel,
02:14up by 28 percent in 24 hours. These are the highest crude oil prices since June 22nd. Fortunately,
02:20there's been a dip since. After Israeli strikes targeted major oil depots in Tehran, triggering large
02:27fires and disrupting fuel supplies across the province. Authorities have warned residents
02:32about toxic pollutants spreading across the city and the risk of acid rain if rainfall occurs amid this.
02:40In further escalation, an Iranian drone hit a Bahrain oil refinery. Smoke engulfed the Bahrain oil plant
02:47Babco and this is the second such attack on an oil refinery in Bahrain.
02:54Benchmark indices on Monday ended sharply lower with the sensex crashing 1,400 points. Rising global
03:01tensions, a sharp spike in crude oil prices. Renewed foreign investors' selling triggered a steep
03:06sell-off on the last street. As the budget session resumes for its second leg, the stage set for a
03:13mega sunset showdown. We've got a glimpse of that today. The government has set its sight on the
03:17opposition's resolution to remove Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Home Minister Amit Shah will be participating
03:23in the debate tomorrow. Delhi High Court has issued a notice to Arvind Kejewal, Manish Sisodia and others
03:31over the CBI's plea, challenging their discharge in the Licker Gate case. The lower court's stinging
03:37observations against the probe agency state, but relief for the ARP leaders continues.
03:45And the man behind Team India's historic T20 World Cup victory, Gautam Gambhir, speaks exclusively to
03:51India today. He says the men in blue are capable of everything, are now eyeing the 2027 ODI World Cup
03:57victory. That exclusive conversation coming your way at 6.30 this evening.
04:07All right, let's begin this broadcast with big breaking news coming in. A lot of panic, concern
04:13about energy sources in the country. And now information coming in from government sources
04:20that there's no reason to panic. There's no immediate likelihood of a hike in petrol and diesel
04:26prices. In some cities and some towns in the country, we've been seeing people hoarding fuel,
04:32panic buying, no need for any of that. As government sources have said, there is no chance of an immediate
04:38hike in petrol and diesel prices. They've also confirmed that there's no consideration as of now
04:43to cut excise duty on petrol and diesel. They are again reiterating that the government is comfortable
04:50with current fuel reserves and that India had timely pivoted to alternate supply sources when the
04:56crisis began. So there's no concern over fuel availability in the country. There's not going to be any concern
05:03of the government running out at this point. And so there's no question also of petrol and diesel prices being
05:10high. Big question mark, however. And the bigger concern, many would argue, is over LNG and LPGA. But I'll bring
05:16in
05:16Chetan Bhutani of Business Today on this broadcast for more details. Chetan, take us through the
05:20government's communication. Clearly an attempt to kind of soothe and put to rest all of the concerns
05:26and worries right now. Well, absolutely. Government has been very clear right from day one. In fact,
05:30Milmala Sitaraman in her statement to the parliament today mentioned that India has been buying prices
05:34from the past one year at very low rates. And so it has been cushioning the OMCs and the retailers
05:40at its end as well. So there's no point to worry. Our sources in the government have confirmed to us
05:44that there's no immediate price hike or any worries or the plan that is there a plan to hike
05:50prices at the retail fuel stations. If you and me have to go and buy, there's nothing as a consumer
05:54that we have to worry about. Also, the government is also planning to cushion oil marketing companies
05:59against the negative margins that they might have to face by providing lower prices at higher rates
06:05to retail pumps. But yes, the government is already preparing a plan and there's nothing to worry
06:09for fuel stations and retail owners at this point of time. Government sources also
06:13mentioned that, you know, India made the pivot at the right time and the state of Hormuz was closed.
06:18India pivoted immediately to other sources of oil and they mentioned to us earlier as well that
06:23government is actually very energy efficient and they would be pivoting for its best interest to any
06:29of the country that offers steady fuel supply. So currently, as of now, sources mentioning to business
06:34today that there's nothing to worry and the government is not looking at a retail fuel price hike as of
06:38now.
06:38But yes, situations are volatile. The times are, of course, volatile. One has to keep an eye out.
06:43The government, Ministry of Petroleum, Natural Gas, Finance Ministry are constantly in touch and are
06:47watching global accrual prices and, of course, having stakeholder consultations as well.
06:51All right, Chetan, thanks for that update. Important to highlight the word immediate here.
06:55The situation is very volatile. You never know what's going to happen in the next one week,
07:00which is why the government has said for now, there's no question of a hike in petrol and diesel prices.
07:04Let's hope it stays that way. But I want to begin this broadcast by also putting the focus
07:09on the consequence of war. Very often we forget that as a result of this kind of a war, what's
07:14the
07:14number one consequence? It's human casualty, the humanitarian cost of this kind of a war. Sure,
07:20we may talk about modern warfare, drone warfare, precision strikes, but ultimately there are lives
07:25being lost. And we want to bring the focus back to that. What's been the casualty count of this war
07:32that's gone on for 10 days and counting? Let's put out those numbers on your screens. And I want to
07:35highlight particularly the number that's mentioned at the very top of the country of Iran, which has
07:40seen the maximum number of casualties of 1,230. Mind you, all of the numbers we put out on our
07:47screens
07:47right now, these are all the numbers that the respective countries have released. Iran is yet to
07:53update their daily toll. So unfortunately, that number will only go up. The other number I want to bring
07:59to your focus, if Iran has seen 1,230 deaths and counting, unfortunately, Lebanon has also seen a
08:06large number of casualties with 397 deaths. Remember, in Lebanon, we've seen nonstop strikes
08:12over the weekend, particularly with Israel targeting Hezbollah targets and clearly civilians once again,
08:18a casualty of this conflict. So Lebanon seeing 397 being killed, 798 injured. In Israel, 11 people
08:26have died, 100 plus injured as a result, of course, of Iranian counterstrikes. Qatar has seen huge amount
08:33of bombardment of missiles and drones by Iran. As a result, Qatar has seen 16 being injured. Bahrain
08:40has one killed and four injured. One number that I'd like to bring to your focus is that of the
08:44United
08:45Arab Emirates, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, cities that would have never seen anything like they have in the last 10
08:51days. Unfortunately, the number of people who've died there is four. Four people have died and that's been
08:56confirmed by the UAE government. The reason we're putting out those kind of numbers on our screens right now is
09:03to
09:03again, remember and reiterate that ultimately, the biggest casualty of war is civilians, is innocent lives being
09:11lost as the course of this war. And as it continues to progress and escalate, unfortunately, that number will go
09:18up.
09:20All right, let's bring the focus now to what's happening in Iran, where the regime is sending out a message
09:25that all is
09:26well, that we will continue and there's no question of a regime collapse. And in the latest development, perhaps the
09:31biggest in the last 10 days of the conflict is that there is a new supreme leader. After Ayatollah Ali
09:37Khamenei was assassinated,
09:38his son has now taken over the charge. It was largely expected, a number of reports did suggest this would
09:44happen, but now it's finalized, formalized. The announcement has been made that Mujtaba Khamenei is the new supreme
09:51leader of Iran. It's for the first time ever that you're seeing essentially the son of a top leader, of
09:58a supreme
09:58commander taking over. Usually you don't see it in Iran, which is why we've termed it as sunrise in Iran,
10:05finally.
10:06Mujtaba Khamenei was someone who was in the shadows, but deemed to be very clearly the successor of
10:11Khamenei. So in keeping with that, the announcement was made amid, of course, a whole lot of support,
10:17people in large numbers. And this is very contrary to what you hear about in Iran, which is that there
10:24isn't much support for the regime. The pictures, however, are complete contrast to that, because what we're seeing is images
10:31right now of huge number of people coming together when that announcement was made. So Mujtaba Khamenei is the new
10:38supreme leader of Iran, taking over from Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. I'll just put the focus right now on what exactly
10:46the
10:46family tree of this family looks like. Who is in fact in this family? Why is Mujtaba been chosen? He's
10:53not the only son.
10:54And I'll put the focus right now on those names as well. Let's put that out right now. And that's
11:01the
11:01names there on your screens. You have Mujtaba Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader who has a final say
11:08right now in most state matters. Then you've got several others who are also at this point very
11:15powerful. Pazeshkian, the president, the head of government of Iran, but ultimately someone who also
11:21reports to Mujtaba Khamenei. So he's all powerful in that sense. He is someone who at this point
11:27clearly has full control of Iran. And all eyes will be on him to see what really he does next.
11:34As we in fact break down for you exactly what the path to power is in Iran, you can see
11:41that on your
11:41screens. Let's also tell you about the other big aspect of what's happened right now. The fact that
11:49Mujtaba Khamenei is someone who's also had a history of serving in the military. Now, what is
11:54this political stand? We don't really know. But Mujtaba's early youth coincided with one of the most
12:00turbulent periods that Iran has seen. At just 17 years old, he actually served as a soldier in a war,
12:08not really in one of your frontline posts. So his life wasn't in danger. But it's important to highlight
12:14that something like this had also happened. That's footage on your screens of Mujtaba there
12:19serving, in fact, in a battalion in Tehran. That experience, and this is what the Khamenei family
12:26has maintained, that that particular experience in the military is what shaped his outlook of what's
12:32happening in Iran and the fact that he was even more powered towards the Islamic revolution. But
12:38that's why there's a lot of talk right now that with this particular move of Mujtaba Khamenei,
12:43someone who served, you will see, in fact, a lot more power being given to the revolutionary
12:49guards. But here's why Mujtaba Khamenei is bad news for America. He is someone who's a hardliner
12:57with close ties to the Iran army, which is what I was referring to as well, because he served
13:02in the army. There's a lot of speculation that now with him taking over, there will be someone
13:09who gives a free hand to the Iranian army. And so that's bad news for America, who, remember,
13:15wanted to have a big, big say on exactly who would be the ultimate authority, who would be
13:21the supreme leader in Iran. Someone like Mujtaba is perhaps the worst possible news for America.
13:29He's also backed by Hezbollah, by Houthis, by the besiege. We're going to put out the right
13:39graphics there. We apologize for that. We're going to change that up because we'll get to
13:43the school killings in just a bit. Let's focus first on Mujtaba Khamenei and what really has
13:49happened. How has he shaped his entire career to become the supreme leader of Iran right now?
14:00And as he, in fact, wants to continue, and we've got all those details for you right now,
14:05he's backed by the Hezbollah, by the Houthis, by the besiege, wants to pursue Iran's nuclear
14:10ambition as well. So there's no backing off from that, which means it's extremely bad news for
14:15America. Ultimately, their goal was to thwart the nuclear operations of Iran. He also seeks
14:22revenge for his father's death, not just his father's death, but also for the fact that in
14:26those U.S. Israeli strikes, mind you, his wife was eliminated, his daughter was killed, his mother
14:33was killed. So he's lost his father, mother, wife and daughter as a result of America and Israel's
14:39strikes. That's why he has a hardline anti-U.S. stance. He's also rejected U.S. diplomacy. So under
14:47Mujtaba, it looks highly unlikely that there will be any sort of dialogue with America. Let's get you
14:54all the details about Mujtaba Khamenei. Why has he been chosen? At 56, he's now the new supreme leader
15:07of Iran.
15:20It is a new dawn for Iran amid its darkest chapter even in history. After Supreme Leader Ayatollah
15:27Ali Khamenei was killed in strikes by Israel and United States. The second son of Ali Khamenei,
15:33Mujtaba Khamenei, has succeeded him.
15:42After Mujtaba was named the supreme leader of Iran, Iran's military and political leaders have pledged
15:48allegiance to him.
15:54A strong emotional sentiment is echoing for Mujtaba after he lost his father, mother, wife and daughter
16:00in the strikes carried out by Israel and United States when Ali Khamenei was targeted by thousands
16:06of pounds of explosives while negotiating peace deal with U.S. alongside top officials.
16:14Mujtaba is a hardline cleric with deep ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. During the
16:20Iran-Iraq war in late 80s, he volunteered on the front lines and served as a member of the
16:26Majahar Battalion. The experience shaped his outlook and deepened his commitment to the ideals of
16:32Islamic revolution. As Mujtaba steps into his father's shoes, he faces the wrath of archrivers Israel
16:40and the United States. Donald Trump called the choice unacceptable and hinted that it won't last.
16:48We're in a very strong position now and their leadership is just rapidly going. Everybody that
16:57seems to want to be a leader, they end up dead. Israel without mincing words stated that it will
17:04not allow any other supreme leader in Iran and any successor appointed by the Islamic nation
17:10or involved in appointment would be a clear target for elimination. Israel followed through its
17:17threat by carrying out a strike in central Tehran and killed Abol Qasim Babayan, identified as the
17:24coming head of the military office of Iran's supreme leader. The move has created global tension with
17:30China opposing any military action against Mujtaba, calling it an internal matter of Iran.
17:36We have noted relevant reports. It is a decision made by the Iranian side in accordance with the
17:42country's constitution. With the supreme leader holding ultimate authority over Iran's military,
17:49judiciary and foreign policy, Mujtaba Kamenai's leadership will significantly shape the Islamic
17:55nation's future and its all-out war with the U.S. Bureau Report, India Today.
18:04Let's break down for you the big headlines of what really this succession means for Iran.
18:09Mujtaba Kamenai will now be the supreme leader for life. Why do we say that? Because in Iran's rules,
18:17you see very clearly that whoever's named as the supreme leader, till he is assassinated,
18:22he will remain the supreme leader. The second is also that there is first hereditary transfer
18:28of Iran's supreme leadership. I'm going to take this across to Pranay Upadhyay of India Today Global
18:34for more details. Pranay, explain to us why and how we see Iran fully set up that even if there
18:41is an
18:41assassination, there's a clear succession plan, there's a leadership ring that immediately takes over.
18:47Akshita, many people might be having this question in their minds that, you know,
18:51despite sustaining so many airstrikes, despite having a decapitation of their top leadership,
18:56why Iran is still sustaining? Why does Iran fall? Why does Iran fall?
18:59So the answer to this question lies in the power structure of Iran. And let me take you to this
19:05power
19:05structure because this is the complex power structure Iran has developed in the last 47 years of this
19:10Islamic regime. So at the top of this thing, supreme leader is actually supreme in every power
19:15structure, this power pyramid, where the people, the common voters are at the very bottom of it.
19:20And this is the steep power hierarchy of Iran, where the elected president, Masood Pazashkian,
19:26he's the elected president. But even the election and the selection of the of the presidential candidate
19:31is is governed by this guardian council and which is the handpicked council of, you know, 12 member,
19:36this guardian council and supreme leader controls almost everything. This assembly of expert which
19:42has selected the supreme leader. But in turn, these 88 member, the expert committee is also chosen by the
19:50people. But in fact, the candidacy of for for these 88 member expert committee is also decided by the
19:56supreme leader. And after this, you also see the power structure of the military as well. So in on three
20:02tangents, if you see the power structure, which is the political power structure, governed and controlled
20:07by the supreme leader. Besides that, you have the the the security or the military power structure
20:13there as well. The supreme leader sits at the top of this pyramid because IRGC, which is different from
20:19the professional army or professional military of Iran is also controlled by the same supreme leader.
20:25Here you see the supreme national security council, which is currently, you know, whose secretary general is
20:30Ali Larijani. And president is also part of it. But he has a limited authority. Besides that, the
20:36Ministry of Defense is there. But you here you see artish. This is the professional military of Iran,
20:41like like Air Force, Navy, Army. But this is superseded by the power structure of IRGC, the Islamic
20:49Revolutionary Guard, and whose strength is around 150, uh, lack of, uh, you know, uh, the soldiers are there.
20:56And they are the power structure. So they are, they hold the real power and they are only accountable
21:01to the supreme leader. So this is yet another, the power, the security structure of Iran is largely deep
21:07entrenched. And also this is governed by the Islamic revolution, Islamic Revolutionary Guard. And they
21:12also have a unique force, which is a voluntary force called Basij, which is, uh, uh, religious as well as
21:19the paramilitary force of, uh, Iranian Revolutionary Guard. And therefore they are also very deep
21:24entrenched and they have their people even at the rural level, at the village level. And that's why
21:29this is an ideological structure and such ideological structures cannot be decapitated
21:34by merely striking or decapitating the top leadership because the second tier will come,
21:39the third tier will come. And, uh, the next slide will show you that what exactly from where are they
21:44drawing their power because, uh, you know, political power and the military power ultimately has to have
21:49a economic power. So see, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's business empire is also deep entrenched.
21:56And as per analysts, around 60% of Iranian economy is currently, uh, you know, uh, Iranian Revolutionary
22:02Guard is having hold of it. So they have construction firm. They have, uh, this construction firm called,
22:07uh, Khatman al-Anba, Anbiya. This has around 20,000 workers and they take major, uh, infrastructure
22:14contracts. Besides that, they are in the other industries as well. Be it the, the Iran's, uh,
22:20Mehr economic, uh, uh, uh, institution. So this has the financial institutions. Like the major,
22:26the biggest, uh, economic institution, the banking hub, the non-final, uh, banking financial corporation,
22:30they are also being held by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. So they control this power
22:36structure of economy as well. Besides that, they also have the Iranian telecommunication company.
22:41That's why Iran can immediately shut down all the communications whenever they want and whichever
22:47way they want. And that's why they have 50% stake and bought with the government, uh, privatization
22:52scheme and who bought Iranian Revolutionary Guards. And besides that, they also have, uh, this group,
22:58which is the largest lead and zinc mining. So they control economic resources. They control mining.
23:04They control, uh, the financial system. And also see this as well, even the automobile sector,
23:0945% stake in the manufacturing of the Mazda brand cars in Iran are also governed, you know, uh, held
23:17by
23:17the IRGC. And besides that, the Iran electronic industry, they control the electronic industry as
23:23well. So if you see the power structure, they control economy, they control military security,
23:29and they also hold the, the political structure, the political power of Iran. And that's why
23:34mere decapitation, mere airstrike are not yielding the, the desired result for United States and
23:40Israel. And I think this is, uh, a main reason for the frustration, growing frustration among
23:45Israel and United States that why despite killing Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, they are not being able to
23:50change the regime in Iran. Back to you, Akshita. Thanks very much, Pranay, for breaking that down for us.
23:54There's a reason that the person who is at the helm is referred to as the supreme leader in Iran.
24:00And
24:00that's what Pranay has broken down for you as well. But remember that Mujtaba Khamenei is now supreme
24:07leader for life, which is why already Israel has said that he is target number one for them. Till he's
24:13assassinated, he is at the helm of affairs. He cannot be replaced. And also he's the first hereditary
24:19transfer of Iran's supreme leadership. What that means is that it's considered un-Islamic
24:25for the son of a supreme leader to take over. In this case, it's the first time that it's ever
24:31happened. That's because past spiritual leaders regarded dynastic power as un-Islamic. All those
24:38rules of, uh, how in fact power transition happens has completely changed. The other big question mark
24:44is over his political views. Because he's been in the shadows for so long, he's not been someone who's
24:48been in the spotlight and has never really come out and spoken about his political views,
24:53but clearly will be a hardliner, someone who's very close to the Iran, uh, uh, revolutionary
25:00guards as well. Succession signals that regime can still very much function. The messaging here
25:07is very important. The Iran government is saying, look, all of these strikes hasn't affected us. We're
25:11still very much in power. We're still very much as powerful as we were. Let's cut across to breaking news
25:17coming in. And the theater of war is expanding in West Asia. Turkey, which was hit, in fact,
25:31last week, says now another missile has been intercepted. Turkey, in a statement, is confirmed
25:37that a ballistic missile was launched from Iran and that it entered Turkish airspace. But it was
25:43neutralized by NATO air and missile defense assets that have been deployed in the eastern Mediterranean.
25:50Turkey has confirmed that there have been no casualties or injuries. But Turkey also not taking
25:56kindly to what's happening, saying, and I quote, we emphasize that all necessary measures will be
26:00taken decisively and without hesitation against any threat directed at our country's territory and
26:06airspace. This is the second missile that's been intercepted by Turkey's air defense. And this is
26:11extremely important because last week when there was a report that suggested that Iran had targeted
26:17Turkey, Iran had denied the same, saying we did not target Turkey. That is the big update that's coming
26:24in. You can see the theater of war expanding, which means more and more countries are being dragged into
26:30this conflict, inevitable, really, as we're seeing day 10 and counting of this war.
26:41With several air spaces being closed off, limited flight operations, we're seeing Indian carriers also
26:47struggling. The latest update is that a London-Mumbai flight, an Indigo flight, has been diverted to
26:54Egypt and has been stranded in Cairo for 10 plus hours. The last 12 hours now, this flight has been
27:02waiting
27:02in Cairo for a directive on what to do next. Inevitably, the challenge that most carriers are facing
27:08is that in East Asia, in the Middle East, you're seeing air spaces being closed off. Very often,
27:15the directive comes in at the last moment that these flights cannot fly over certain countries.
27:20In this particular case, this London flight headed back to Mumbai was diverted via Egypt and has been
27:26stuck in Cairo for over 12 hours. Passengers are right now unsure about what's going to happen next.
