00:00Dr. Ferdy Pacheco, we're closing in on our opening bout.
00:03Heavyweights Marvis Frazier and James Quick Tillis.
00:07The 27-year-old Tillis out of Tulsa, Oklahoma, has a record of 31-5, 24 by knockout.
00:13He did lose to Carl the Truth Williams, although he knocked Williams down twice in the first round.
00:19And tonight, Tillis goes up against 24-year-old Marvis Frazier.
00:24He's 13-1, 8 by knockout, but Marvis is still attempting to make it back from that first round KO by the champion, Larry Holmes, back in November of 1983.
00:37And a win tonight over Tillis would be a major step back to respectability for Marvis Frazier.
00:44We're ready for the introductions. Here's the ring announcer, Ed Darian.
00:47Ladies and gentlemen, Murad Mohamed, president of Murad Productions, is proud to present the scheduled 10-round heavyweight bout.
01:01The judges, John McSweeney, Herb Santos, and Lillian Running Wolf.
01:09The timekeeper to bell is Jim Carpenter, counting for the knockdown seconds, John Rogers.
01:14In the ring at this time, the man in charge of the scheduled 10-round heavyweight bout, referee Joey Curtis.
01:25And now, boxing fans, introducing the principals.
01:29First in the blue corner, wearing the white trunks with the black trim.
01:35He tipped in at an even 218 pounds.
01:39This gentleman has a record of 31 wins, 5 losses, with 24 knockouts.
01:46From Tulsa, Oklahoma, ladies and gentlemen, let's welcome James Fighting Cowboy Tillis.
01:57Tillis.
01:58And his opponent in the red corner, wearing the burgundy trunks with the white trim.
02:07He weighed in at 208 and one-half pounds.
02:13This young man has a record of 13 wins, only one loss, with 8 knockouts.
02:19From Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, boxing fans, here is Marvis Frazier.
02:27Frazier.
02:33And the referee, Joey Curtis, about to run down the instructions.
02:37Marvis, with his dad, the former world champion, Joe Frazier.
02:42And it is Boundini Brown, a familiar face out of the days of the Muhammad Ali camp, with the arm around James Tillis, who used to be known as Quick Tillis.
02:53He now refers to himself, as you heard, as the Fighting Cowboy.
02:57Could that be a contraction, the Quick Cowboy?
03:01This is scheduled for 10.
03:04Marvis Frazier, as you saw on the tail of the tape, listed at 6'2".
03:08That is the height of James Tillis, but Frazier closer to perhaps a shade over a 6'0".
03:14And his weight, 208, he's beginning to grow into that heavyweight bowl.
03:19His legs are certainly like his father's were at that stage.
03:23Tree trunks.
03:25And you can see the height advantage that Tillis does have over Frazier.
03:30You can check the lower right hand of the screen.
03:32And you are seeing the running time.
03:35In effect, we are now 25 seconds in to round one.
03:41Tillis, when he feels he's in control, has a masterful quick jab.
03:47You're going to be hearing the voice of Drew Boundini Brown, who's never been known for keeping quiet in the corner.
03:55Corner that you shared with Brown upon occasion of the days of Muhammad Ali.
03:59I had a punctured eardrum from standing on the right side of him most of the time.
04:03And a battered back.
04:04Go to the basement when the elevator comes down.
04:07All right, that is Boundini.
04:09Go to the basement when the elevator comes down.
04:12That means much to the head when the guard is down.
04:15He also characterized this bout as from the root to the fruit.
04:19We beat the root, Joe Frazier.
04:20Now we're going to beat the fruit.
04:22Marvis Frazier, colorful man.
04:25He's the poet of the street.
04:27Coming up on the halfway mark of round number one, Marvis Frazier, 13-1, 8-5 knockout.
04:40Frazier's biggest win, a 10-round decision over James Broad, the man who knocked out Marvis in the 1980 Olympic trials.
04:48And Marvis also shows a victory over Joe Buckner.
04:51Yes, the same Joe Buckner who lost to Marvis' brand 10 years earlier.
04:57It was a different Joe Buckner, however.
04:59It was the same body but a different person inside that body.
05:03Joe Buckner in his prime was a pretty good fighter.
05:07Extended Joe Frazier, Jimmy Ellis, Muhammad Ali.
05:11But here, it's that kind of first round where Quick Tillis is having his way.
05:18Marvis very patiently waiting for an opening that thus far has not materialized.
05:22Good left hook by Tillis.
05:31And now Frazier able to back Tillis up.
05:34Tillis' biggest fight lost that 15-round decision to Mike Weaver in a 1981 WBA title fight in Chicago.
05:43He was also stopped by champions-to-be Pinklon Thomas and Greg Page in 82.
05:47Do that Sugar Ray Robinson on it.
05:50Do that Sugar Ray on it.
05:52There it is.
05:53There it is.
05:58There it is.
05:59That's what I'm talking about.
06:00Do that Sugar Ray Robinson on it.
06:03And we're now final seconds.
06:05First round.
06:08We'll be back right after these messages.
06:1120-year-old Marvis Frazier out of Philadelphia in the Maroon coming out and is met by the hook.
06:17The hook of James Tillis.
06:23Fairly, you mentioned at the start that Tillis has much confidence coming into tonight's foul.
06:30But here is Frazier after the good first round by Tillis.
06:34Able to back Tillis up.
06:35He had it all his way.
06:36He does have a lot of confidence.
06:39And he showed it in the first round.
06:40He won that first round easily.
06:42But you got the impression Marvis was just waiting away.
06:45As he got back in the corner, the father said, Joe Frazier said, that's the way we want it.
06:49Now a little bit more pressure this round.
06:51Get away from it.
06:53Curtis is spending a lot of time warning Tillis.
06:57We are one minute in.
07:12Round two.
07:14Later on, Larry Holmes defending his heavyweight championship against Carl The Truth Williams.
07:18Since Frazier was knocked out by Holmes back in November of 83, he has won twice by decision over Bernard Benton.
07:30And his last fight, a unanimous decision over Funzo Banjo.
07:35That's a name you may want to roll on your lips.
07:38Or is it Banjo Funzo?
07:39Either way, I want him in my next move.
07:44Right now.
07:46Tillis has been doing more of the same than he did in the first round.
07:51Excellent combination.
07:53And Tillis has Frazier hurt.
07:56Frazier is hurt.
07:59Frazier is going down.
08:02Curtis checking it out.
08:04And Curtis coming for the standing eight.
08:07Under a minute left, as you can see, in the second round.
08:22And here is Tillis looking to finish Frazier off.
08:26Frazier's got to do a little bit of fighting.
08:28Or Curtis must stop this fight.
08:30That standing eight count has just given Frazier new life.
08:34Although Frazier's still in bad shape.
08:36Has no legs under him.
08:37And an awful long time to go to the bell.
08:39Let's get out.
08:41That's the danger of the standing eight count.
08:43On the verge of being stopped has given him new life.
08:45Hey!
08:46That guy arrested.
08:47Why are you stopping?
08:49Hey!
08:51Come back for me now.
08:52Now Frazier fighting back.
08:54Hang on.
08:56Step back and punch that.
08:58Hey!
08:59Hey!
09:00Coming up on ten seconds left in the round.
09:03Okay, step back and punch that.
09:05We're going to stay right here at the completion of the round and go to the corner of Marvis Frazier, who took a standing eight.
09:13A big round for the fighting cowboy out of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
09:18James Tillis.
09:19Do you want me by this mother in the morning, man?
09:21Right.
09:22Hey!
09:22Don't stab me like that, boy!
09:24Yo!
09:24Yeah.
09:25Hey, man, you all right?
09:26Yeah, I'm fine, Bob.
09:27You sure?
09:27Yes.
09:30We sure now.
09:31Yes, sir.
09:31Stay it down.
09:32Look at Marvis type coming up.
09:34Get close, son.
09:37You got to get close to Marvis.
09:40Don't fuck up.
09:41Whoever invented the standing eight count, Joe Frazier has sent him a big package this Christmas because that saved Marvis Frazier from a knockout.
09:49Without the standing eight count, I personally thought Curtis was stepping in to stop the bout.
09:53No legs, and we can see how he is being pummeled on the replay.
10:00One punch after the other, reigning in.
10:04In this fight, in contrast to the Larry Holmes-Carl Williams championship fight later on, there is a mandatory eight and a standing eight.
10:13Three knockdown rule is in effect, and the bell does not save the fighter except in the final round.
10:19Scoring on the ten-point must system handled by the three judges.
10:23Referee Curtis does not score.
10:25Marvis Frazier showing some enthusiasm as he opens up against Tillis.
10:30Well, he's recovered now.
10:31He's a young man strong.
10:32He's got a lot of Frazier genes in him, which means you can take a big pounding and keep coming back.
10:36Had there been a standing eight count with a Larry Holmes fight, he would have survived into the next round.
10:41But big, big favor played to the Joe Frazier family, Marvis Frazier in particular, with a standing eight count.
10:48Very discouraging for Quick Tillis, who was on the verge of a big knockout.
10:53Don't load up, my son!
10:55But you see the difference in Quick Tillis when he has confidence.
10:58He is just in command.
10:59He's chasing you.
11:00He's throwing hard punches.
11:02You've got to put them together.
11:03Tell us with a record of 31-5, 24 by knockout.
11:07He comes off a ten-round decision in December, last October.
11:13He lost by decision to Carl Betruth-Williams, although he knocked Williams down twice in the first round.
11:19Give me three, four, and five, my boy!
11:23Frazier's starting to try to put some hurt on him so that at least Tillis won't attack with that ferocity he did in the first two rounds.
11:31And Tillis, by mistake, is standing still just looking at him, although he just landed a good right-hand shot on Marvis Frazier.
11:38Shuck it off and coming back.
11:41I do want to point out we do not have an NBC microphone on Wundini Brown.
11:46That is the voice you are hearing from the corner of Tillis.
11:50He is located to our left and is very vocal.
11:55Try standing next to that for 15 years and see what it does, Dave.
11:58Tighten up, Cowboy!
12:00Stretch out!
12:02Stretch out, Cowboy!
12:03There's no question a man like Wundini can spur a lazy fighter like Tillis to fight.
12:08He just keeps you going.
12:10He gets your blood hot.
12:11He's invaluable in a corner as a cheerleader.
12:13There's nobody like him.
12:16Did Ali pay any attention to him?
12:19He paid him a lot of money.
12:21Oh, here's Frazier landing with the right hand.
12:24And Tillis ties him up.
12:26As an answer to your question, seriously, he was a big, big part of the Ali Circus.
12:30It was part of the mystique, part of what Ali loved to do.
12:33Yes, he was a big part of the Ali Circus.
12:35Nice uppercut by Tillis.
12:37Marvis Frazier has that low driving stance, Cowboy!
12:47And opponents try to catch him with uppercuts.
12:49We saw Tillis succeed earlier.
12:53And Frazier with a very strong third round and getting brave here in the third.
12:59This is a 20 round.
13:01And that is it.
13:12That's the end of round three.
13:15Coming up later on here on NBC, Larry Holmes defending his heavyweight title against Carl
13:21The Truth Williams.
13:22There is Larry back in the dressing room.
13:24Holmes very upset, though, about some of the remarks made by opponents like Carl The Truth
13:29Williams, the subject we discussed with him earlier.
13:35But these fighters today, they think that they have to put a great fighter, a great champion
13:41down to be able to build their own confidence.
13:44You build your own confidence by your hard work, your motivation, your dedication.
13:48These guys do not have to come out and say, Holmes is old, he's shot, he's finished, his legs
13:54are gone.
13:55Because if that was so, and they won, all they're doing is discrediting themselves if they become
14:01champions.
14:04Larry Holmes chasing that 49-0 record of rookie Marciano.
14:09Marciano for Larry, it has been a run of seven years as undefeated heavyweight champion, the
14:14longest uninterrupted reign since Joe Lewis, who had a run of 12 consecutive years.
14:21And Frazier landing with that short left to greet Tillis as we open up in this fourth round.
14:26A sizzling hook.
14:34Determination hatched on the face of Marvis Frazier.
14:36He's got the same look his father used to have when he get out of the corner.
14:38He looks like a tiger, wants to eat somebody up.
14:41Giving ground to the bigger Tillis, though.
14:50Tillis lost some of the spark and a great deal of the advantage that he built up in the
14:53first two rounds, which is his history.
14:56He starts out great and then just kind of loses interest in the bout.
15:00But I gave him a big 10-8 round in the second.
15:03And therefore, we are at an advantage to Quick Tillis of 29-27.
15:14Stiff left hand by Tillis, who is tied up by Frazier.
15:18A minute in.
15:19Round four.
15:20And you'll notice we are keeping the clock in the picture.
15:23And that is running time.
15:25That is time as the round continues.
15:28Oh, no.
15:29Now you're doing it, baby.
15:31I'm going to get out of it.
15:32I put my red ties on it.
15:35Bonini summoning forth all those code words.
15:38Ray Charles Sugar Ray Robinson, the elevator.
15:42That's so many code words.
15:43I wonder if Tillis understands any of it.
15:46It's just kind of nodding from time to time.
15:49It doesn't want to hurt Bonini Brown's feelings.
15:52Listen, he's got to face Bonini when he goes back in the corner.
15:54In the meantime, Frazier put together a nifty combination of three or four punches.
15:59Tillis going to sleep again.
16:00Another three good punches by Marvis.
16:02Slowly creeping back into this fight is Marvis Frazier,
16:05having gotten a reprieve from the standing eight count.
16:09Hey!
16:10Hey!
16:11I got hands free!
16:12Get out of there!
16:13Hold it!
16:14By referee Joey Curtis taking charge,
16:17telling Tillis to stop the holding,
16:18along with Dick Ettenberg and the fight doctor,
16:21Bernie Pacheco, Marv Albert from Reno Navano.
16:24As Marvis leans over in the typical Frazier manner,
16:29Tillis has been able to land some beautiful uppercuts.
16:35Good hard action by both men,
16:37but Marvis Frazier getting the advantage of that exchange.
16:40And suddenly Bonini Brown in the corner of James Tillis.
16:46Well, at least for just a couple of seconds,
16:48he did quiet down.
16:49Buy your gun!
16:50Buy your gun!
16:52Buy your gun!
16:55Houdini again.
16:56You've got the firepower.
16:57Fire your guns.
16:58But so far, only blanks this round from Quick Tillis.
17:02This fight is scheduled for 10.
17:11Coming up to the end of the fourth round.
17:14Come on, cowboy!
17:15Put you weight on, cowboy!
17:18On to round five from Reno, Nevada.
17:22Marvis Frazier, who at one point said
17:23he was not interested in a professional boxing career,
17:27then he changed his mind.
17:28He turned pro in September of 1980.
17:30opening with a third-round knockout
17:33after he was staggered in that debut in the first round.
17:37One-point barbers was sidelined for 17 months
17:39with hepatitis and a pinched nerve.
17:42Looking to make it back from the disappointment
17:46of that first-round knockout
17:48and the embarrassment of the first-round KO
17:50by Larry Holmes back in 83.
17:52Too much pride in that family.
17:54Too much pride in the Frazier
17:55to let something like that affect him.
17:57He's back here.
17:58He's fighting hard.
17:59I don't know whether Marvis Frazier
18:00will ever have the size
18:01to be truly a threat to a heavyweight champion,
18:06but certainly he gives it his all once he's in there.
18:08This round began with both men exchanging very hard hooks.
18:15And now all of a sudden, as the tide changes...
18:17Oh, he hurt Tillis!
18:18All of a sudden, as the tide changes,
18:23you see Marvis dictating the action in the last two rounds,
18:26and Tillis going back to his usual retreating style.
18:29As his confidence ebbs, his speed increases backwards.
18:34What about the tender man?
18:40The tender man!
18:42Tillis opening up very strong the first couple of rounds.
18:46You wait too long!
18:47At a decisive second round,
18:49Frazier forced to take the standing eight.
18:52And now Frazier, the man who is carrying this fight.
18:59Carrying the fight,
18:59and you have the feeling that if Tillis would quick going back and stand and fight,
19:05he could get Marvis Frazier in trouble.
19:07Marvis does not have the strongest chin in the world.
19:10He's got a load of guts,
19:11but he doesn't have a big, strong chin.
19:13Fish!
19:14Let's get out.
19:15Let's get out.
19:15Hold it.
19:17Hold it.
19:18You've got to stay free, boy!
19:20You've got to stay free, cowboy!
19:24Under a minute left.
19:24Now boy, put him in.
19:25In this fifth round.
19:29Good, patented.
19:30Mepp hooks to the side by Marvis.
19:32That's where the money was for Joe Frazier.
19:34That's where the money is for Marvis Frazier in this fight.
19:37Let's get out.
19:38Right back, right back.
19:39Nice combination by Tillis,
19:49and Frazier able to counter.
19:57Just when you think Tillis could fire away and turn to tie,
20:02he starts to run again.
20:04And Marvis not one to let opportunity go by,
20:06follows him in with thudding hooks to the body and the head.
20:09Get right back on that stick.
20:11Go on that stick.
20:15There have been precious few jabs in his mouth.
20:18Two jacks in his mouth.
20:21Once again in this fifth round,
20:23it is Marvis Frazier as the aggressor.
20:28All right, baby.
20:29You're doing good.
20:30All right.
20:31That is, I want you to be there.
20:32You can't make love to down unless you do that.
20:35You know what I'm saying?
20:36You got to be there.
20:38Oh, I'm sick.
20:39Are you ready?
20:40Yeah.
20:40You can't make love to down unless you do that in touch-up.
20:45Hey, big, big, big, boom, jab, big.
20:47How much more?
20:48Good.
20:49That's too strong.
20:50And what's with that?
20:52We work two hours.
20:54Got up too many mornings.
20:57Get that spirit in you.
20:58You ain't no ordinary man.
21:00Don't fight like one.
21:02I can't get mad.
21:03I can't get a little closer.
21:05I can't get a little closer.
21:06I can't get a little closer.
21:07All right.
21:08I can't get a little closer.
21:10All right.
21:11You know what I'm doing?
21:11Yes.
21:12Let it go.
21:13Six rounds.
21:15A contrast in style in the corners of Marvis Frazier
21:18and James Tillis.
21:21Marvis saying, how am I doing, Pop?
21:23Pop says you're doing fine.
21:24And in the other corner, Boudin saying,
21:30be a man.
21:31You work too hard.
21:32You're not an ordinary man.
21:36And, of course, on my card, unofficially,
21:39because of the 10-8 round,
21:40I have it a totally even fight now.
21:42Marvis being able to take the last three rounds in a row
21:45as the cowboy got on his horse
21:47and rode into the distance.
21:49Marvis Frazier in hot pursuit.
21:51There you go.
21:52Three or four or five punches
21:53and nothing in return from Tillis.
22:00Boudini just said he spit on you.
22:01Hit him hard.
22:04Boudini will resort to anything.
22:06Look at that.
22:10Marvis just chasing him around the ring.
22:13And no return from Tillis.
22:19Powerful combination by Tillis.
22:21Let's get out of here.
22:22Yes, when he squares away,
22:23when he sets his feet
22:24and he's not in the stirrups,
22:26he can punch,
22:26but he won't do it enough.
22:28He's so busy running back
22:29that he won't set himself
22:31and let the punches fly.
22:32But in the meantime,
22:35there's this little Marvis Frazier
22:37like a bulldog right on him.
22:41Now, boy,
22:43how long you gonna let him buck in there?
22:48And it's Frazier continuing
22:49to stalk Tillis
22:51with a hook by Tillis.
22:54Perfect hook by Tillis.
22:57Hits!

23:14Joey Curtis breaking the fighters
23:16cleanly, as you should.
23:18Doing a good job here.
23:19Going to be highly criticized
23:21for that standing eight,
23:22but that's the rule
23:23in the bottle.
23:24Hits!
23:25Hits!

23:31and this sixth round
23:33is scheduled for ten.

23:39Cowboy, what do you like now?
23:41Hits!
23:42Hits!
23:43Hits!
23:44Hits!
23:46Hits!
23:47Hits!
23:48Oh, Tillis.
23:49Big right hand by Tillis.
23:51Frazier right back.
23:53Cowboy, what the hell
23:54If Frazier's got one defect, he's got too much Frazier blood in him,
23:58and when he gets nailed, he tries to fight back,
24:00sometimes causing disastrous results as we saw in that second round.
24:04But he is on fire tonight.
24:14Coming up to the end of round six.
24:17Good action in the corners in the sixth round.
24:26Corner of James Tillis.
24:31Don't you know that? Don't you know it?
24:35What are you going to do?
24:37Tell me that.
24:42James Tillis, 27 years old, out of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
24:46Don't get mad. Don't get mad.
24:48Record of 31-5, 24 by Knockout.
24:52As we go to round number seven, Tillis out to meet up with Marvis Frazier.
24:57Frazier, 24 years old, from Philadelphia.
25:0013-1, 8 by K.O.
25:02That one loss.
25:03The first round knockout by Larry Holmes in Las Vegas back in 83.
25:12Nice left hook by Frazier.
25:13Frazier warming up every round, getting right on target.
25:25What Tillis needs to do is get his gun strapped on and go forward
25:31instead of going back and fighting occasionally.
25:34Moudini wants him to go forward, but he's not.
25:38He's just fighting his Tillis fight of going back and trying to finish it with one punch.
25:42Now that was a hard, hard uppercut.
25:44That's the kind that can end a fight.
25:51Let's get out.
25:51Nice and easy.
25:52Watch your head.
25:53Coming up later on, Larry Holmes defending his heavyweight championship
25:57against Carl, the Truth Williams.
26:12No knockdowns to this point.
26:14We have that one standing eight, which is an effect of this bout.
26:17That in the second round with Tillis all over.
26:22Frazier has slowed down for the first time in about four rounds
26:29because I think that uppercut took a little starch out of him.
26:33He felt it all the way down to his heels
26:35and it's taken him a little time to recover.
26:37He hasn't had to zip in the steam in his punches since then,
26:41but Tillis doesn't seem to suspect as much or detect it.
26:43Boy, that's pure Joe Frazier.
26:57He's even hollering like Joe Frazier did with each hook.
27:05Get that on him.
27:08Bring it up.
27:09And the referee Joe Curtis taking a more active role these last few rounds.
27:14Usually likes to see the boxers fight their way out.
27:17He's keeping it very clean.
27:19He's keeping the brakes very, very crisp.
27:22But some of those brakes, the boxers have their hands free
27:24and they're still fighting.
27:25That's what I'm talking about.
27:30Take this.
27:31Take down.
27:32Take this.
27:35Curtis got a little bit of that punch.
27:37He took it well.
27:39He took it well.
27:40He took it well.
27:41He took it well.
27:42He took it well.
27:43He took it well.
27:44He took it well.
27:45Final second, seventh round.
27:48We'll be back after these messages.
27:53Mark Albert with the fight.
27:55Dr. Ferdie Pacheco with Dick Enberg.
27:57We're at the Lawler Events Center, Reno, Nevada,
27:59on the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno.
28:01Later on, Larry Holmes defending his heavyweight title
28:04against Carl Betruth Williams.
28:06This is round eight, scheduled for ten.
28:08Heavyweights, Marvis Frazier in the maroon
28:10and James Tillis in the white.
28:15Coming up later, Reno's first heavyweight title fight
28:19in some 75 years or since Jack Johnson knocked out
28:23James J. Jeffries.
28:25Ferdie, I'm told you like Jeffries in that one going in.
28:27I took the short price on that fight
28:29and I paid my way to medical school.
28:33This fight is still within Tillis' reach.
28:36It's 67 to 66.
28:38It's a close fight because of the last round
28:41was even when that big punch got Frazier off his attack.
28:47And he has not been the same since.
28:4867, 66, Frazier ahead unofficially.
28:56But Tillis not putting up the kind of fight
28:59that you have to to win.
29:02Which has been his case history.
29:04Let's get out of here.
29:05Come on, stop holding, will you, fellas?
29:06Stop holding, fellas, says Joey Curtis.
29:09The scoring is on the 10-point must system
29:12under the Nevada Athletic Commissioner
29:13and will be handled by the three judges.
29:16Curtis does not take part in the scoring.
29:23John McSweeney, Herb Santos, and Lillian Ragnwood
29:27all out of this area.
29:28Why don't you get busy, cowboy, for your mama?
29:31For your mama, boy.
29:33All right, now Ferdini Brown saying,
29:35this is for your mama.
29:36And that was for his mama right there.
29:38Two good jabs and two good hooks by Frazier
29:42that exploded off the jaw of Quick Tillis.
29:51Again, Tillis connecting with an uppercut
29:53and doing a borderline illegal thing.
29:56He's not putting a jab out there.
29:57He's trying to hold him off with an open glove,
29:59which gets the laces in the face.
30:01I'm surprised that Curtis has not pointed that out to him.
30:05That's what it's, he got to say.
30:07I got it.
30:07I got it.
30:08I got it.
30:09I got it.
30:09I got it.
30:10I got it.
30:10I got it.
30:10I got it.
30:12Come on, weigh your five hands.
30:13Watch out of here.
30:14Listen, I want this to be closed.
30:17Understand?
30:17Close this glove.
30:18Let's go.
30:19And there was a warning for that fist to be closed.
30:25Joy really involved in this fight.
30:27Curtis is in every aspect of this fight.
30:29He's ensuring that this is an action fight.
30:31He won't let him tie up.
30:32He won't let him rest.
30:33He won't let him rest.
30:33He won't let him rest.
30:33He won't let him rest.
30:34Dave and back.
30:35On the back.
30:39On the back.
30:40Nice and easy.
30:41Watch your heads.
30:42Watch your head.
30:43Let's go.
30:44Frazier seems to have found that gas again.
30:46Let's keep it up.
30:47Oh, perfect punch by Quick Tillis.
30:51And that will do it for this eighth round.
30:55Back with round nine in just a moment.
31:00Back at the Lawler Events Center in Reno, Nevada.
31:03Capacity here in the area of 12,000.
31:07This is about half fill as you watch Carl The Truth Williams,
31:11who is watching Marvis Fraser and James Tillis
31:14on the undercard here in Reno.
31:19Carl The Truth getting set to go up against Larry Holmes.
31:23That'll be later on.
31:24And we head to the ninth round.
31:29And what Carl The Truth has to draw a conclusion here is
31:33never give it up, never give up, just keep on fighting.
31:37That's what the Fraisers have in their blood, that's what Marvis has.
31:39Not quite big enough to be a champion, but all the heart of a champion.
31:44What's at stake here?
31:47A good possibility for a title fight in either the WBC or the WBA.
31:55Tillis, a man who lost the title fight to Mike Weaver.
31:59That was back in 81.
32:00Losing by decision in a WBA championship bout.
32:05Tillis has also been stopped by champions-to-be,
32:08Pinklon Thomas and Greg Page.
32:09Tillis says he's in the process of making a new start,
32:15something we've heard many times in the boxing game.
32:18Can't blame him for trying.
32:21I'm going to warn you again, I want you to close that mission, understand?
32:23When you put that punch, I want you to close.
32:25Next time, I'll take a point away.
32:26Nice box!
32:27And again, Joey Curtis, very strong.
32:30Next time, I'll take a point away if you don't close that hand.
32:33He has been flagrant in disobeying Joey Curtis.
32:36Get the idea, but Dini Brown is getting a little exasperated with James Tillis.
32:52Yeah, his vocal power is down at least by 50%.
32:55Tillis not responding with the magic that Muhammad Ali could produce
33:01and respond to those striped tones.
33:06The main thing you've got to say,
33:08this fight has moved on the movement of Fraser forward relentlessly
33:13and the backward movement of Tillis, who just won't stand and fight.
33:18As he just did that, what I was saying, that he's not doing it.
33:22You can't fight going backwards as fast as Tillis does.
33:24And less than a minute left in this ninth round.
33:31Nice and easy.
33:32Remember, Curtis has told him,
33:35you flick that out there open and it's one point away from you.
33:38One point can decide this fight because it's still close.
33:4177 to 75 right now.
33:43I have it unofficially.
33:45Barbas Fraser's favorite.
33:48It was Tillis getting off in the early rounds.
33:51In fact, he rocked Fraser.
33:54Fraser giving the standing eight back in the second round.
33:58But it has been Fraser.
34:00The aggressive from the third round on.
34:05Just when Tillis looks like he's about to get started with a good combination,
34:08he stops and back comes Marvis with four or five punches,
34:11building up points.
34:16It's as if he's expecting to start Marvis with one good punch
34:20and win the fight.
34:21And he well cooked.
34:24And we'll stay right here between rounds
34:26and check out the corners of James Tillis.
34:31And Marvis Fraser, you can hear the reaction for the crowd,
34:34a spattering of boos as things have slowed down
34:37these last couple of rounds.
34:38You got to win.
35:03if you want to come out fight raw first let me know your cowboy okay
35:14would you label that as confusion in the corner of tell us organized confusion
35:18until it's not listening to anybody
35:2010th and final round instructions for marvis frazier well be careful stay close to him keep
35:34punching we need the round let's see if he can do what pop wants in the other corner just fight
35:41with everything you've got you're so far behind you need to win with a big round
35:50well still should be good rested he hadn't done much fighting for the past four or five rounds he
35:58should get one good three minute round together but there he is grabbing and holding on to marvis
36:03frazier marvis got to come in closer and try not to pay the price coming in
36:23there goes tillis bouncing back
36:27his feet planted to try to land the good heart combination but marvis has taken the steam out of
36:33and if he is able to hold on for the win
37:00he was put alongside the victory over james broad
37:07as the two significant w's in the career of marvis frazier
37:12and you'll just have to say that marvis is back he has fought his way out
37:17from darkness because he was relegated to absolute obscurity after that
37:24shattering defeat at the hands of holmes in the meantime
37:27in the ring both men are trying to trade punches both where and it's tillis who's hanging on
37:34and it's under a minute left in this 10th and final round and when you say that marvis
37:38frazier is back you have to take into consideration
37:49you have to take into consideration the fact after larry holmes it is a very weak heavyweight picture
37:55yes but that is exactly why he's right in consideration almost every day a new hopeful
38:01goes down the drain as james broad did just the other day as jimmy clark did a month ago just when
38:08it looks like they're about ready to fight for the title it's all over but here marvis i believe
38:13has taken his fight
38:19and coming up to the end of this final round
38:24tellison frazier exhausted
38:26that is it
38:32we'll be back with the decision in just a moment back after these messages from your local station
38:40albert bernie pacheco dick enberg and we're set for the decision let's go to the ring here's ed
38:46ladies and gentlemen we have a unanimous decision and a scoring by points as follows judge lillian
39:02running wolf scores at 98 91. judge herb santos observe the fight 97 91
39:13and judge john mac sweeney saw the fight 96 92 for the winner marvis frazier
39:29a unanimous decision marvis frazier extending the record to 14 and 1
39:37by defeating james tillis so marvis frazier continuing the turn following the
39:47loss to larry holmes back in november of 83 and as you saw during the course of the fight there's so
39:52much activity that takes place in the corners of the boxes we've traced the fight through the
39:57proceedings that took place in the corner so here is a unique look back at the bout
40:11you didn't mean it
40:12we didn't mean it
40:21You ain't got nobody here to cry out of you.
40:25Nice and easy.
40:26I want you out of the nice and easy.
40:27If you go too long, I'm stretching out.
40:29And I know.
40:30I stretch out.
40:33Don't fuck up.
40:35Don't keep your hands up.
40:36You all right?

41:00All right.
41:01That's the overhand right.
41:02You got to be that.
41:03Right.
41:04You got to fall down behind the overhand right.
41:06Hands up.
41:07You trying to hit home run.
41:08Blow the bases up first.
41:10Back, back, back, back.
41:11Back, back, back, back.
41:12Boxing.
41:13You're better boxer than he is.
41:15Oh.

41:33All right.

41:39Stay down.
41:40All right.
41:41Do it again.
41:42Quit loading up.
41:43All right.
41:44Hey.
41:45Hey.
41:46Hey.
41:47Hey.
41:48Hey.
41:49Hey.
41:50Hey.
41:51Hey.
41:52Hey.

42:16Pick up your mother text.
42:21What's wrong with you? We've been doing roadway. You ain't got no more spirit.
42:28You win the fight, huh? You win the fight?
42:30Yeah. That's got to be it. You can't see it.
42:32Yeah, all right. You win the fight.
42:34Just don't get killed, sir.
42:35All right. Yes, sir.
42:40Let's get out of here.
42:42Don't let it slip away from us.
42:46Don't go back into your old self.
42:48Get in there, man. Get that spirit.
42:49Get in there. Get it.
42:50Think about your mama.
42:54Get that for your mama.
42:56He's ready to go.
42:58I want that fist close. I don't want that thumb out there. You understand?
43:02Oh, he ain't coming now.
