A jet stream shift will bring a dramatic East Coast warmup this week. Cities from Louisville to Washington, D.C., will jump from freezing early-week lows to springlike highs in the 60s and 70s by Friday.
Transcript
00:00Get ready for an incredible temperature turnaround along the East Coast this week.
00:05It's a classic case of March weather, coming in like a lion and going out a lamb.
00:12Temperatures Monday were more like January, but by Friday in cities like Washington, D.C., Pittsburgh, Louisville, and Raleigh,
00:20it's going to feel like May and even June.
00:23Even cities in the Northeast will see the same transition from 20s and 30s to mostly 60s and 70s,
00:32with temperatures increasing some 30 degrees or better.
00:37Why is this happening?
00:39Well, it's all the tale of two different jet streams.
00:42Early in the week, the dip in the jet stream across the eastern half of the country brought in what?
00:47Chilly air from the north.
00:49But by the end of this week, that dip in the jet stream leaves, a dip in the jet stream
00:54goes into the western United States,
00:56and we get a broad west-southwest flow, which brings all the warmth that's been building in the southwest and
01:03Texas
01:04right into the Midwest, the Carolinas, and parts of the Mid-Atlantic, where we are going to be challenging records.
01:11Now, the one area that may never get into the warmth will be northern New England,
01:16but for most of us, it's going to feel like spring as we head toward the late week.
