00:01Sportsman's Adventures is presented by Yamaha and fueled by StarTron.
00:09Little guy, you sorry thing.
00:13Uh-huh. It's that tarpon rod.
00:21Done. Rear that thing up.
00:26Shaw.
00:28You want to grab him?
00:29I'll try.
00:30Okay, so what we do with this one.
00:32I'm sure I'm going to get bit.
00:33Bring him on here.
00:34So what you're going to do here is this is, you've caught snakes and stuff like that.
00:38Not really.
00:39So, oh, you really haven't?
00:41No, man.
00:41Okay, well, you don't want to get bit.
00:43Okay, so let me show you what we're going to do.
00:44We're going to pull him up here.
00:45We let him flop a bit.
00:48You grab him real fast and hard behind the head, right behind the head.
00:51That's it.
00:51Dude, you got him.
00:52You got him, man.
00:53Now I need pliers.
00:54Who's got pliers?
00:56You got pliers.
00:57You got pliers.
01:00I grabbed them on the airboat, but not much bigger than this.
01:04He's pretty serious about this.
01:06I got to get him to let go.
01:08Come on, let go.
01:09Little ones are the, they got little old razor teeth.
01:13Yeah, you can hold on.
01:14Wait a sec, let me get him.
01:17Okay, now, as you hold him.
01:21Hear him?
01:22Yeah.
01:22Yeah.
01:23So he's gator calling.
01:25What'd you do stepping back?
01:27Well, he's got that pointy in here and my pointy in.
01:30What happened?
01:30I'm afraid that, listen, I promise you.
01:32He's just a puppy.
01:34Listen, he is.
01:35I promise I don't have enough to spare.
01:37You got him.
01:39You got him.
01:39You got him.
01:41You got him.
01:42Good job, Ridge.
01:43I'm like, natural little crocodile done D over here.
01:51Go, baby.
01:52That's what I was talking about.
01:58Only a mama could love that mouth.
02:02Woo!
02:08Bringing home the snapper.
02:13Hey, look at that.
02:19Okay, so let's address the elephant in the room.
02:22Why are we looking at gators?
02:24Well, when alligators become a nuisance,
02:27you basically have to go fishing for them.
02:29And that's what the legendary bass pro Shaw Grigsby
02:33has been doing with his spare time.
02:35You might remember Shaw Grigsby
02:36from his own fishing programs
02:38or when he pulled on some big saltwater fish
02:40with Captain Rick last season.
02:42Now, together with Captain Ron Sanderson,
02:45they make it their business to deal with gators,
02:48to get a little too friendly in Alachua County.
02:51And for this sportsman's adventure,
02:53Captains Rick and Ridge tagged along to see how it's done.
02:58You know, it was really awesome to meet you
03:00at a CCA banquet.
03:02Yeah.
03:02Me being a professional angler,
03:04you being the nuisance gator trapper,
03:06and then meshing those two together.
03:09The nuisance thing is so much different
03:12than what we do in the public.
03:13Right.
03:14And I'm the trapper for Alachua County.
03:17And since we both live in Alachua County,
03:19it's like, might as well come and we have fun.
03:22The cool thing about nuisance trapping,
03:24what you do and what I like about it,
03:26was that it's live trap capture.
03:29So when I gator hunted, which I did for many years,
03:32but when I gator hunt, we capture and kill them,
03:34and then harvest them and eat them.
03:36With you, we're capturing them alive
03:38and then relocating them.
03:50The baiter?
03:51Yes!
03:53Look at this!
03:54I had good coaching, baby!
03:56He's listening to his guide!
04:00Alright, now here's fun.
04:01This one might be big enough we lasso,
04:03or we could just grab him.
04:05We'll see which way.
04:06Okay, so in the state of Florida,
04:08we have the SNAP, the state nuisance alligator program.
04:11A nuisance alligator has to be,
04:13is considered to be four foot or bigger.
04:16People call in the SNAP hotline,
04:18they issue a permit to one of the 105 trappers
04:21throughout the state and county.
04:23We go and we can catch the gator
04:25because you have to have a permit
04:26in order to catch the gator.
04:27Right.
04:28So anything under four feet that we catch,
04:31we can just automatically release.
04:33Okay.
04:37Wait, Rick.
04:39Oh my goodness!
04:41He went under!
04:43Ready?
04:44Cinchy!
04:45Hard, hard!
04:46Alright, drag him up!
04:56You want to jump on him?
04:59Oh my goodness!
05:00Where are you going?
05:01Where are you going?
05:03So, you really don't have to,
05:05yeah, be careful,
05:06because that one's just big enough to do the deal.
05:08Okay?
05:09Pliers.
05:11Get this.
05:12Here we go.
05:12Let's leave him open for just a second.
05:15Just kind of, yeah, hold him,
05:16keep holding him right there.
05:18Okay, there you go.
05:22Okay.
05:23Okay.
05:24We got it.
05:25Alright.
05:26Go ahead and reel this up.
05:29I don't want anybody to get hooked.
05:31Okay.
05:32Got it.
05:33Pliers.
05:35Tape.
05:35Tape.
05:36We can do that.
05:38Got him?
05:39Don't let him bite me.
05:41You're asking Ridge to be in charge of your health?
05:50When do you get one of these that's like eight feet?
05:53And pissed off.
05:54Yeah.
05:55Alright.
05:55Alright.
05:56Alright.
05:56I guess we're sliding this off, right?
05:58And that one goes to the bag.
06:01Give me a little slack there, Pop.
06:03Ready?
06:09Alright.
06:13That's two.
06:15Got him.
06:16That's pretty cool.
06:19Hey, that's the true definition of being in the bag, Jack.
06:23In the bag.
06:23In the body bag, baby.
06:27Sportsman's Adventures is brought to you by Yamaha.
06:33Reliability starts here.
06:35Bahio.
06:36Blue light blocking.
06:38Radically clear Polaroid.
06:39Fishing sunglasses.
06:41Penn.
06:43Let the battle begin.
06:45And StarTron.
06:47Start.
06:48Run.
06:49Store.
06:50With StarTron.
06:52Because the two gators the crew snagged were undersized, they can be released.
06:57But they must be released far enough from their original location so they don't try to return.
07:02There you go.
07:03This boat ramp at a large lake will suffice.
07:06There you go.
07:06There he goes.
07:08And as soon as that job is finished, another call from a concerned citizen brings the crew to a residential
07:14lake in Gainesville.
07:15So if you can move left over here, move left, go outside the fence, stay up against the fence, move
07:22left, cast over him.
07:25And you've got to reel quick because there's going to be stumps and all, okay?
07:28Yeah.
07:29So just move left, go across him, and hook him up fast.
07:34You've got to reel it real fast to get it on him and...
07:42Uh-oh.
07:44Reel, reel, reel, reel, reel, reel, reel, reel, reel.
07:46You've got him.
07:46You've got him.
07:46Come on, let's go.
07:54That's a good gator.
07:55Throw right underneath the dock and get him again.
07:58Nuisance gators are gators that are creating a problem, and a lot of them are in neighborhoods.
08:04We get them out of swimming pools, front porches, and there are ones that we've had some that have eaten
08:09pets, which is really sad.
08:11Lose your pet to a gator.
08:12Yes.
08:13And that's what we do.
08:14It's a service to move that gator.
08:17A lot of people think we're taking them and killing them, and it's cool to have a live capture.
08:22Hey, what am I hearing over here?
08:25I'm hearing grunts.
08:27They sound like old men grunts.
08:29I don't know.
08:29Show them.
08:30Come on, guys.
08:32Look at this toothy critter.
08:34Look at their faces.
08:35I mean, they're just...
08:36We've got a dinosaur.
08:38We've got a dinosaur.
08:40Keep coming.
08:43Double lift, double lift.
08:45Work together, work together.
08:46Reel down together and pull.
08:51One more.
08:56I mean, Ridge lost his shoes.
08:58I'm not losing mine today.
09:01Oh, no.
09:03No.
09:08You got him?
09:11Okay, who wants him?
09:12If I got it up on the rods, I'm going to give this to somebody.
09:16Get him, Pop.
09:18You ready?
09:19Oh, no.
09:19Take the rope.
09:21He's all yours.
09:32Okay.
09:33Ridge, you hold this.
09:36He's still hot, so this is not time to jump on him, okay?
09:40Yeah.
09:41He's still hot.
09:43Do we want the snare?
09:45You want to grab the yellow ball?
09:48Grab him.
09:49Pull him on up here.
09:50Yeah.
09:50So we can get him out of the...
09:52There we go.
09:55Yeah.
09:56So this right here is very important, because I know what this will be seen for.
10:03Tighten this up just a second.
10:04I'm going to see if I can pop it out.
10:06Okay.
10:09If you ever try and go toward an alligator from the side, this is where he sees you.
10:13Right.
10:14So you don't ever try to grab him.
10:16Even when you're on top of him, you'd never bring your hands like this.
10:20That's why you always push his head down.
10:22The best way to approach this gator is either from the back or from the front like this,
10:27or straight from the back.
10:29You don't hear him.
10:30Ron does.
10:31But be real careful, because this guy can wheel his head.
10:33They are the fastest at this size.
10:36They are fast.
10:37Do not...
10:38Here, Ron.
10:39I want to...
10:41I want to hold his head a second.
10:44Oh, here.
10:45Got it.
10:45All right.
10:46We'll take both of those.
10:49All right.
10:49They...
10:50They will turn their head...
10:51I'm telling you, they...
10:52Okay.
10:52They're the fastest son of guns in the world.
10:55You want me to jump on this one, Rick?
10:56Huh?
10:56Whoever wants it...
10:58Who's going to jump on him?
10:59Let him...
11:00Let him get him off of this.
11:02Got him?
11:03Sit down on top of him, y'all.
11:05Okay.
11:06And be careful of those hooks in your back.
11:08You got it, Rick?
11:09Okay.
11:11You got him?
11:12Don't let him go now.
11:13Do you think it's a joke and have him bite me?
11:15No, no, no, no.
11:17Right now it is.
11:18No joking matter.
11:19One's under his butt and the other one's on...
11:21They're both on each side.
11:22One's right there at his heel.
11:23See it?
11:24Right there.
11:27Got it?
11:28That's good.
11:31Okay.
11:32There you go.
11:34Cool.
11:35How about that?
11:37Just pick him up, throw him over your shoulder like a Florida man.
11:41Look at that.
11:43There you go.
11:44Off you go.
11:45Let's go put him in the cage.
11:47Yeah.
11:49Sportsman's Adventures is brought to you by...

12:11Catch trophy fish and ride waves in our beachfront paradise.
12:21Just make it over the top of his head.
12:22I can't reach that, Sean.
12:24You gotta go quick, man, before he goes under.
12:28Okay, reel, reel, reel, reel, reel, reel, reel.
12:30Just keep reeling until it goes and hit him hard.
12:32You got him.
12:33You got him, man.
12:34Good job, Ridge.
12:38Nice job.
12:38Explain the process of getting a tag to get a gator, a nuisance gator.
12:43Okay, so somebody calls in the staff hotline, which is 866-FWC-GATOR.
12:50And they call it in.
12:51They give them all the information.
12:53They then send me an email so that I have an email with that specific address and we can only
12:59go to that address.
13:01And catch that gator.
13:02And catch that gator.
13:03And that gator is creating a nuisance.
13:05Correct.
13:05Or that one that's chasing a dog or going through, you know, and you can't have your kids outside.
13:11You can't go swimming.
13:12You can't do this and that because you got a gator there.
13:14Right.
13:14I got you.
13:15So I get that permit and then either I do it or I call you as my agent and say,
13:20hey.
13:20Go get it.
13:21I'm busy.
13:22A lot of times you'll be running two or three over here and I got to run two or three
13:25over here.
13:25Exactly.
13:26And as the agent, you're acting on my behalf so you have the same authority.
13:30There we go.
13:31Ready?
13:31Yeah.
13:33There we go.
13:33He didn't like that.
13:34He did not like that.
13:37All right.
13:37Shil, you made him angry, man.
13:44All right.
13:44Bring him.
13:46You got it?
13:47Hold on.
13:48He's coming back.
13:49Yep.
13:50All right.
13:50He's a big mother.
13:52Here we go.
13:54Pop, come over here.
13:57Okay.
13:57Ready?
13:59I got a log.
14:01I don't think so.
14:03Do we still have him or did I come off?
14:06I guess I still have him.
14:09Hey, who's got a lasso?
14:10I got it.
14:11I got it.
14:12Right here.
14:12Oh, he might be.
14:13He might be under a log or a pilot.
14:15I think we're under a log or something.
14:16Yeah.
14:17This is not good.
14:19He's laid back or...
14:22I don't know.
14:23I think he's here.
14:24Maybe give that one to Rick and when we take the throw hook.
14:28Because if you can lift this tree...
14:30Come on.
14:34He's moving that way, Rick.
14:35Yeah, he was just bouncing right now.
14:38I feel him right underneath us.
14:42He's right underneath us here.
14:44I may need to go further to the rust then.
14:46Yeah, to me.
14:47I got him.
14:48We're coming.
14:49I got him.
14:51I got him.
14:52There we go.
14:53I got my line off of it.
14:55Here's the tree.
14:55There he is.
14:56There he is.
14:56There he is.
14:57There he is.
14:58I'm going to get down to get the tree.
15:00Okay.
15:01Yeah.
15:02Rick has the tree.
15:03I'm in the tree.
15:04I got him.
15:04I got the gator.
15:05No, you're in the tree.
15:05I'm looking at the hook.
15:07Here.
15:07Hold this rod.
15:08Hold this rod.
15:09Okay.
15:09Watch it.
15:10Watch it.
15:10Okay.
15:11All right, Rick.
15:12Here.
15:12Hang on.
15:15Take that noose.
15:16I got it.
15:16I got it.
15:17I got it.
15:17Make the noose.
15:18Move it.
15:18Move it.
15:18We got it.
15:22I got to get it down lower.
15:26Okay.
15:27I can't get by the yellow.
15:28Loose up on the yellow.
15:29Loose it up on the yellow.
15:31The yellow is broke off.
15:32No, it's not.
15:32Yeah, there you go.
15:33Yeah, it is.
15:34I got it broke over here.
15:35Ready?
15:36Yes.
15:39Gentlemen.
15:41All right.
15:41Pull that.
15:42Okay.
15:42I got it.
15:43Okay.
15:43Can you throw the, throw the tree around him?
15:47He's, hang on a minute.
15:48Get it tight, y'all.
15:49He tried to.
15:50Cut it off.
15:51There you go, y'all.
15:52Wait a minute.
15:52It's still not far enough back.
15:55I think you're good there.
15:57Okay.
15:59Okay.
16:00Let me go around this.
16:02Yeah.
16:02Go ahead.
16:03Got it?
16:04All right.
16:05That's done.
16:06Hey.
16:08Pull it tight.
16:09Take this.
16:09Pull it tight, y'all.
16:10Take this.
16:12Oh, oh, oh.
16:13Let it go.
16:13Let it go.
16:14Let it go.
16:14Don't pull him up.
16:15Don't pull him up on the boat.
16:16Sportsman's Adventures is brought to you by Ameritrail.

16:47Take the rope.
16:49Are you ready?
16:51Jump out there.
16:52Okay.
16:53Go.
16:55Pull, pull, pull.
16:57Let's go.
16:58Rick, hit free spool if you have to.
17:03Can you take that up on the dock?
17:06Okay.
17:07Ron, we're here.
17:09Let's slide him up here.
17:10Let me get him out of this tree.
17:11Ready?
17:12Yeah.
17:13Okay.
17:14He's coming up on the rock.
17:17Okay.
17:17Let me tell you what.
17:18Rick.
17:19Yeah.
17:19Come here.
17:19All right.
17:20You want me to get him?
17:21All right.
17:23Okay.
17:26Whew.
17:27Okay.
17:27I think he's as tired as we are.
17:30You want to hold this?
17:31Okay.
17:32I do.
17:32Do you want this?
17:33I'm good.
17:34Okay.
17:34So here's what you want to do.
17:36You want to be behind him.
17:37Yeah.
17:38Completely behind him.
17:39Not from the side.
17:40Not over there.
17:41Not over there in the water.
17:43If it goes bad, where do you think he's going?
17:45Don't go there.
17:46We're not going to go bad.
17:48You ready?
17:49Yeah.
17:50I am.
17:50You got him?
17:51Yep.
17:51One, two, three.
17:53Yeah, pull him.
17:54Ready, Ridge?
17:55Not really.
17:55Come on his top right here.
17:56Watch this hook.
17:58Tell me when you're ready.
17:59Look.
18:00Grab the top of his back.
18:01No.
18:01You want to be right here.
18:02Put your hand right there.
18:04Ready?
18:04Up his head.
18:05Right there.
18:05Ready?
18:06Jump over him.
18:07There you go.
18:07You got it.
18:08All right.
18:09Keep his head down.
18:10Head down.
18:12Okay, ready?
18:12Put a hand here.
18:13Grab it.
18:14Hold him.
18:15One over here.
18:16You got to hold on.
18:17Ready?
18:18He's a big one.
18:19All right.
18:20Ron.
18:21One.
18:23Two.
18:25Three.
18:27Four.
18:29Five.
18:30Six.
18:32Seven.
18:34Eight.
18:35Nine.
18:37Ten.
18:38You better put a couple more.
18:39Yeah, because we got dragging.
18:41Yeah.
18:43What's that?
18:43Twelve, thirteen?
18:44Fourteen.
18:45Okay, that'll work.
18:46Here we go.
18:47Okay.
18:48I'm just judging.
18:49Nine.
18:50Dude, that's a big gator.
18:52That's a big gator.
18:53Hey.
18:54I ain't dead yet.
18:55Congrats, man.
18:57Congrats.
18:57That's like as good as it gets.
18:59Sounds cool, man.
19:01Right leg.
19:01Now that the gator has been taped,
19:03it's time to get it from the shore of the lake up about half.
19:0620 feet to the road.
19:07Okay.
19:08But being that the gator is rather beefy, it's going to be more than a challenge.
19:12So, instead of the stairs, the team decides to go off-road by creating a system to slide the gator
19:19uphill.
19:20Once topside, it's time to get a true measurement.
19:23Ready?
19:24Let's touch them.
19:25Ten.
19:27Ten.
19:28Ten.
19:29Ten.
19:29And that's a live one.
19:30The mission has attracted the neighbors.
19:33Shy at first, many eventually warm up to the idea of getting photos with the uninvited guest,
19:39and are eager to send the gator off as it's loaded into the trailer.
19:45But if they're over four feet, we cannot legally release them back into the wild,
19:50because according to the biologists, they say that they come back.
19:54So, we as the trappers have an option.
19:56There are places that can legally own them, and if you can legally own an alligator alive,
20:02then we can sell those gators.
20:04Those are gator farms.
20:05Right.
20:06In the case of these two gators, they are heading to Brawler Creek Ranch,
20:10where the owner, Mike, unloads the pair and gets them acquainted to their new home.
20:15It's here that the gators will be hunted and harvested,
20:18and could be an opportunity for your own Sportsman's Adventure.
