Hot Ones - Season 29 Episode 6 - Teyana Taylor Battles One Hot Sauce After Another While Eating Spicy Wings
Transcript
00:00You should've asked me all the Q questions up top, you know what I'm saying?
00:04You start asking the deep ones as we get deeper into these wings, it's insane.
00:14Hey, what's going on, everybody? For First We Feast, I'm Sean Evans, and you're watching Hot Ones.
00:18It's the show with hot questions and even hotter wings, and today we're joined by Tiana Taylor.
00:22She's fresh off a Golden Globe Award win and Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the
00:27film One Battle After Another,
00:28also a Grammy Award-nominated musician as well. Her latest album is called Escape Room.
00:32But you know what? You can't run away from the wings of death today. Tiana Taylor, welcome to the show.
00:37Cannot escape the wings today. What's going on?
00:40How are you around spicy food before we get started?
00:43I'm a spicy food girl. I love spicy food. Like, everything I see, all my food that I cook,
00:49if you're gonna eat in my house, it's gonna be spicy, for sure.
01:14I just don't know what you planted in these wings, so I'm like...
01:18Cautious. You know? Alert. Very alert.
01:22Head on a swivel. Yeah, I can't trust you right now.
01:24You know what I'm saying? I get it, I get it.
01:26This is like we're literally trapped in an escape room and it's only one way out.
01:30Through.
01:30No, it's either one of us gotta go. You know what I'm saying? It's like...
01:34You ever see those movies where it's like...
01:35Two enter, one leaves. That's what's going on today.
01:37Only one can go. Y'all figure out who gonna be the one. It's giving Saul, you know? So...
01:42So this first one is Garlic Delight, and you'll start over to your right.
01:56I'm not coming in here being cocky because...
01:59The ones that be coming here talking shit.
02:01The main ones croaking.
02:04You recognize that pattern. I've seen that pattern many times before. Very smart.
02:08Yeah.
02:09So across your many projects, it's kind of mind-blowing how many luminaries across different disciplines
02:14you've turned into advocates and collaborators. You know, from Dionne Warwick to Lauren Hill,
02:20from Matt Damon to Leonardo DiCaprio. What's your approach to balancing being a student of the
02:25greats while simultaneously having the confidence to go toe-to-toe with them creatively?
02:30Ooh. I think... I think that's the whole point, you know? Me wanting to make them proud, you know?
02:36To go from being home and watching them to actually looking to the side and watching them be beside me
02:42is insane. And because I don't take that for granted, my goal is, like, is no turning back.
02:48Like, you see how neither one of us could escape this room right now?
02:50We can't.
02:51I can't escape the set. So I'm always just locked in. And even if I am nervous, I just...
02:56I gotta shake it off. The moment they yell action is just up.
02:59I can see it today, you know? You're showing no signs of trepidation.
03:03You know, you're cautious, but you're confident.
03:06Yes. Careful. Aware.
03:09And on that note, are you ready to move on here to wig number two?
03:13Is this sriracha?
03:15This is. It's a pickled garlic sriracha here.
03:17Ooh, pickled garlic. Okay.
03:31All these people got me all flats. I'm a flats kind of girl.
03:35We pay attention to the rider over here, all right? We take a lot of pride in that.
03:38I like that. You know, it's very, it's given detail oriented. I like this show already.
03:42I like it here.
03:44So, last summer you enrolled in the Escoffier School for Culinary Arts.
03:48Yes.
03:48Pursuing a degree in both pastry and culinary, what has so far been the most challenging dish
03:53or technique to master? Have you tried your hand at the perfect beurre blanc yet?
03:58No, but fabricating protein is, like, so hard. But I ain't gonna front. It's so good.
04:09It turned out so good. Worth the process?
04:11It was worth the process.
04:12When you close your eyes and picture in your mind your dream Tiana Taylor restaurant,
04:17what's the picture look like? Can you paint it for us?
04:22That'll be something cool. I want to bring the skates back.
04:24Mmm.
04:25You know, I need them to bring the skates back. Maybe a little duck.
04:30And maybe the seats look like you're in the drive-in. Like, maybe the seats just give it my car.
04:34It's sort of 50s era.
04:35Yeah, but like...
04:35I see the vision.
04:36And I think I want Tata, chef jackets, like, or leather. I'm very extra, so it's gonna be something cute.
04:44I know that.
04:44Maybe like Patchworth or like, you know, it's gonna be something cute.
04:47You know how it's just the logo right there? Like, no, I need the logo right here.
04:50I need a big logo in the back, like...
04:51The merch will go hard.
04:52You already know I'm feeling merch.
04:54Yeah.
04:54I got merch everywhere.
05:00I season my chicken and mustard.
05:04Once you season it, you gotta marinate that thing in mustard.
05:09Getting lots of chicken tips already, you know? And we can use those over here at this show.
05:12Yeah, yeah, yeah. Mini don't burn no chicken.
05:14You know, I don't play about my fried chicken now.
05:18So, in your documentary, Assembly Required, there's this scene where you're struggling through a pre-show sprained ankle.
05:25You have problems with the lighting.
05:27And it made me wonder, when you think about all your live shows, all the times that you've had to
05:31take stage,
05:32in a show where everything that could go wrong did, is there one that immediately comes to mind?
05:37I mean, that's all of them. It's always so chaotic backstage. I mean, dancer done lost a bra. This person
05:43can't find a pinky toe.
05:44It's just always so much going on. So, what I try and do is be like, okay...
05:49Like, if it didn't go as planned, it still worked out. Like, one time, my wig slipped back, or whatever,
05:54and I wound up pulling it off and like...
05:57You know, I wound up swinging in a circle and the crowd went crazy.
06:00So, it's just like, yeah, I didn't go... It wasn't... It didn't go as planned. I didn't plan for my
06:04wig to fly off.
06:05But I made it a moment and it became even bigger. I can think quick on my feet and, you
06:10know...
06:11You embrace the chaos.
06:13Absolutely. I'm like, organized chaos.
06:15And you're embracing it so far in this show. Three wings down. Doing great. Are you ready to move on
06:21here to wing number four?
06:22This one with the lizard?
06:23This is the one with the lizard. So, we call this one a smoked habanero and peach.
06:27This is about to be some hot shit happening. I can tell by the lizard. All right.
06:35You know.
06:38I wouldn't be a greedy. I'd take as big as a bite.
06:46It's real good.
06:47What stands out as the most heated dance battle that you've ever participated in firsthand?
06:52Like, how closely does art imitate life when you're in a movie like Stomp the Yard?
06:57I think my most intense battle was in like third grade.
07:01And you still remember it.
07:02It was in like, oh, I never forgot that day.
07:04It was on... It was recess too. We ain't have no music.
07:08You know what I'm saying? And I just... I remember we just got it... we got it popping.
07:12They had to like... I don't even know what was playing.
07:15Two entered. Only one left.
07:17You feel me?
07:18Yeah, yeah. We're on theme today.
07:19It felt like today.
07:21You know what I'm saying? It felt like today.
07:28Oh, it smelled good too. It got curry in it.
07:31I feel like I'm getting greedy about a wing and I don't like that because that's not smart.
07:36Mm.
07:36You know what I'm saying?
07:37Like you're violating your rule about being cautious.
07:40You feel me?
07:40Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:42I'd love anything curry in it. This... this gotta have some type of curry in it.
07:46Yeah, it has that powder to it that you're catching. Yeah.
07:50What's the most essential ingredient for a proper summertime Harlem block party in your experience?
07:56Good music. You know what's crazy? I never understood the importance of like DJs when I was younger.
08:00I'm just like, he talks too much. Play the song.
08:03But I realized that you have some DJs that do talk over the whole song and it's horrible.
08:08But then you have DJs that know...
08:11You know like...
08:12That have a spiritual connection to the vibe.
08:13You feel me? They know.
08:14And you got a hundred dollar bill. Put your hand. What? What?
08:17You know what I'm saying? It just... they blend with the music. You know what I'm saying?
08:22And I love a call and response.
08:23I just love when people know what they're doing.
08:26So to have a good party for me, you gots to be a good DJ.
08:29Do you have a number one tip when it comes to mastering the jump roping art of double dutch?
08:34You don't know how to double dutch if you ain't holding the chest.
08:36You gotta... you gotta hold... you gotta go like this.
08:38Even if you don't need to, it's just something about this that's just like... it's good luck.
08:41You know what I'm saying?
08:42And you gotta kinda like... you gotta like... fumble a little bit.
08:46Like you gotta... jump in. You like...
08:48Oh no, hold on. Wait. Slow down. Speed up. Hold on.
08:51You hit that jump.
08:58You know what I'm saying? It's an art.
08:59I know exactly what you're saying.
09:01You know what I'm saying? It's an art.
09:03And then do you have a go-to order at Amy Roots on 116th Street?
09:07Ooh, Amy Roots, yes. I love cornbread and I love when they give me extra butter.
09:11I don't want the butter melted, but I don't want the butter cold neither.
09:13It gotta be just enough to like... how you see it in the commercial when you just smear it on
09:16it and then it start to melt on there.
09:18Don't send me no melted butter.
09:20Send it... I need it soft enough to melt on top.
09:26So you got the cornbread.
09:27Mm-hmm.
09:28Then you got the fried chicken.
09:30Crispy.
09:31Then you got collard greens, a little bit of hot sauce on that.
09:34Mm-hmm.
09:35Big macaroni and cheese, maybe a little bit of yam.
09:39And then you have it.
09:39Delicious.
09:40Mm-hmm.
09:40Mm-hmm.
09:45This smells like it's about to be some shit that's about to go down.
09:49Ooh.
09:54And this one to me is kind of sneaky, like kind of like one of those false first impression sauces.
09:59Groovy.
10:01Still dancing on it.
10:04Dancing, dancing, dancing.
10:06You are dancing on it.
10:07Dancing cheese.
10:11So you gave an interesting quote talking to press backstage at the Globes where you said,
10:16Honestly, if everything would have happened my way on my time, I don't even know if I would be standing
10:20up here.
10:20Do you think patience is underrated in Hollywood?
10:24I just learned that there's always something bigger in store for you.
10:28So even when you get that no, understanding that that no is also a win.
10:33And I think that patience is a part of knowing what's for you and what's not, you know, and when
10:38it's your time and when it's not.
10:39But I also have a, I have a sports mentality.
10:43You know, I'm gonna wait my turn.
10:46I'm gonna clap from the bench or on the court, you know, whether I'm six man or defensive player in
10:51the corner or, you know, like, it doesn't matter.
10:53I know how to wait and understand my position, especially with a movie, because now I'm looking at PTN.
11:00I'm like, listen, you're our quarterback.
11:02You know what I'm saying?
11:03Let him cook.
11:04Let him cook.
11:04I show up in my jersey and I'm ready to have a good game.
11:09And you know what?
11:10Sure hand so far.
11:11All right.
11:11These wings have not been too hot to handle.
11:14But if you're ready, we can move on to sauce number seven.
11:19This one's called Nirvana.
11:23Oh.
11:23I almost said.
11:26That's in Havana, right?
11:29I almost said.
11:32Okay.
11:41Mm-hmm.
11:42Mm-hmm.
11:43You're starting.
11:45I'm okay if you're okay.
11:46All right.
11:47Then we're okay.
11:48Okay.
11:49Since we're a team.
11:50Mm-hmm.
11:51You wanna take a sip of water?
11:52Yeah.
11:52Let's do that.
11:53Let's do that.
11:58I've heard you say of your early life.
12:00I was always in go mode.
12:01I'm from Harlem.
12:02I'm a hustler.
12:03I'm a grinder.
12:04Looking back, what do you see as like your boldest shoot your shot moment?
12:08Like, has there ever been a time where you've surprised yourself with your own instinct to hustle?
12:13Yeah.
12:13I didn't know how many things I was like collecting until now.
12:17I'm like, you know, like even signing up for culinary school.
12:20I got it.
12:22I didn't really surprise myself.
12:25Bitch.
12:30You know what else surprised me?
12:32What else surprised you?
12:34Going to Nebrana.
12:36You know what?
12:37I noticed that it was the first one that you didn't smell test.
12:40Because we was in like deep conversation.
12:42Yeah.
12:43Right.
12:43Lost in it.
12:44Lost in it.
12:45Yeah, yeah, yeah.
12:45I took my eye off the ball.
12:47All right.
12:47I took my eye off the ball.
12:48I can't trust you.
12:48I'm going to earn it back.
12:49I'm going to earn it back along the way.
12:51Ooh, bitch.
13:00Baby, I need you to stop asking me questions right now.
13:02Let's take a beat.
13:05You ready?
13:06I'm ready.
13:16Okay, I'm going to have my tongue involved in this one.
13:19Right.
13:21I'm going to tell you, we have two more to go, bitch.
13:22We got two more to go, bitch.
13:24That's the athlete mindset right there.
13:26Just two more reps.
13:27Just two more reps.
13:29We're almost to the finish line.
13:31Almost to the finish line.
13:33What makes R&B music the realest bitch in the world?
13:35Can you unpackage that quote from Billboard in an interview from 2020?
13:41I said that right?
13:45Mmm.
13:47I don't know.
13:58Oh, dear we go.
13:59That's the one right there.
13:59Down the hole, bitch.
14:00Straight from the jug.
14:01Straight from the jug.
14:02Hits different.
14:04Mmm.
14:07No stone is left unturned in R&B.
14:10You know?
14:11You get to be your most vulnerable.
14:14What you doing?
14:16Just trying to survive.
14:17You know?
14:18You chewing ice?
14:19Yeah, a little bit.
14:20Why didn't you tell me?
14:23Oh, baby, you're selfish over here.
14:25Yeah.
14:28You praying on my downfall.
14:29You praying on my downfall?
14:29No, never.
14:30No, I'm praying that we make it to the top of this mountain.
14:33All right?
14:34And then we get a beautiful view from the summit.
14:37That's always my goal going through this.
14:38I never want to take anybody out.
14:40I never pray on anyone's downfall.
14:42Never.
14:43You should've asked me all the cute questions up top.
14:46You know what I'm saying?
14:46You start asking the deep ones as we get deeper into these wings.
14:49It's insane.
14:50Make it look like I ain't got an answer.
14:51You see, I had all the answers in the world earlier.
14:53I was spinning bars.
14:54Now it's just getting a little...
14:56getting a little crazy.
14:57All right, I'll try to come up with a cute one, all right?
15:00For this next one.
15:01It's too late.
15:01It's too late.
15:02I said the cute ones need to go up top.
15:06Okay.
15:21What makes Pretty Woman the perfect film in your opinion?
15:24Why does that film resonate so strongly with you?
15:27Oh my God.
15:28I love Pretty Woman.
15:30That instantly just made the burn go away.
15:32I told...
15:33I'm trying already.
15:34Oh my God.
15:34I'm trying to reciprocate.
15:36That was so cute.
15:37You redeemed yourself.
15:39Pretty Woman is just so special.
15:41One, I love rom-coms, you know?
15:43And I love the idea of fairytales as well.
15:46And I just love love.
15:48Julia Roberts is like my favorite person in the whole wide world.
15:50It was just my favorite.
15:52I had the biggest crush on Richard Garrett.
15:58Say Pretty Woman again.
16:00Pretty Woman.
16:03Yeah.
16:03You know, it's just, it's so good.
16:06And it's one of my favorite films.
16:07And I just, I love what it talks about.
16:10And I just love Julia.
16:11Like she just, it's bright.
16:13Everything she does, it just always feels so bright.
16:15And I just love it.
16:17I'm a rom-com girl.
16:19Alright, Tiana.
16:25I'll be looking like a punk if I don't do that.
16:28What a fucking run.
16:29What a fucking run.
16:31How much you dipped in here?
16:35No, dip it some more.
16:36Okay.
16:37I gotcha.
16:39Is that good enough?
16:39I want you to eat that part where you dipped it.
16:41Yeah, yeah, yeah, of course.
16:51And with that, the wings of death are behind us.
16:54And as we've learned today, there's someone who wears many hats.
16:57A multi-hyphenate, including aspiring pastry chef.
17:01If you could put together the ultimate antidote dessert to combat the wings of death,
17:07what would you whip up in the kitchen?
17:09Like, can you describe it step-by-step?
17:12I would, I would have to bake a cake.
17:17I'd have to bake a cake.
17:19Strawberry.
17:20Strawberry cake.
17:21With a whole lot of ice in.
17:23And a big ass scoop of ice cream.
17:26Between that and Pretty Woman.
17:27You know, Pretty Woman got me through one of these rounds.
17:31Yeah.
17:32You know what I'm saying?
17:32Mm-hmm.
17:34And now I want some cake.
17:35I actually want to go and dabble back into the, what was that curry one?
17:40Back into the tropical Amarillo.
17:42We don't have any cake, but we do have some ice cream.
17:45Tiana Taylor, here comes a bowl.
17:48We've earned it.
17:49And look at you taking on the wings of death, living to tell the tale.
17:53And now there's nothing left to do but roll out the red carpet for you.
17:56This camera, this camera, or this camera.
17:57Let the people know what you have going on in your life.
18:00My current status is that I am dying.
18:04Only after that, from my casket,
18:07I will be releasing my Air Jordan 3's March 7th.
18:14And then, when I rise from the dead,
18:17I want you to go and watch one battle after another.
18:20On HBO Max, or I'll hunt you.
18:24And yeah, I'm dying.
18:36Thank you so much. I know you do merch.
18:45I know you do merch.
18:49I got some Tiana Taylor merch.
18:51I knew when you said it.
18:51I knew when you said it.
18:53But yeah.
18:54And they can't take that away from me.
18:55I'll need you some sneakers, too.
18:56You will?
18:57Yeah, I got you.
18:57You just gotta tell me your size, yeah.
18:59You're the best.
19:00And I got you.
19:01You know what I'm saying?
19:01Because we're a team.
19:02Because we're a team.
19:04I wouldn't go that far.
19:05Okay.
19:05You was chomping on ice without me.
19:08You still can't be trusted.
19:10I don't even know what's going to happen
19:11when I get in the car back home.
