A 22-year-old driver was detained in Greater Noida after allegedly attempting to flee a petrol pump without paying, triggering a dramatic chase that ended with a motorcycle being dragged for several kilometres on a highway, police said.

The incident occurred on Friday evening at a fuel station in the Dhum Manikpur area. The accused, identified as Harsh from Sikandrabad, reportedly filled diesel in his black Mahindra Thar. When asked to make the payment, he claimed he would transfer the amount online but allegedly sped away without completing the transaction.

Petrol pump employee Kuldeep Sharma chased the SUV on a motorcycle along GT Road and onto National Highway 91. During the pursuit, the Thar collided with Sharma’s motorcycle, which became lodged in the front of the SUV. The vehicle allegedly dragged the entangled bike for nearly 5 to 7 kilometres.

CCTV footage captured the sequence, showing the motorcycle catching fire while being dragged, with flames visible during the chase. Acting on alerts, police intercepted the SUV near the Luharli toll plaza and took the driver into custody.

The Thar has been seized for forensic examination. Sharma sustained injuries in the incident and is undergoing medical treatment.

Police termed the matter a serious case involving attempted fuel theft, rash and negligent driving, endangerment of life, and possible additional charges related to the fire and injuries. Legal proceedings against the accused are underway.
