00:20Inspiration flowin' just like the breeze
00:23Chase your dreams and feel at ease
00:30Be good, be very good
00:34I think I'm succeeding at being good
00:38Hi guys, this is Yaya Diamond
00:40And thank you guys so much for tuning in to Dream Chasers Radio
00:42We have amazing guests on this show
00:45My next guest, Mr. Nelson
00:47Has really taken it to the far, far snowy tips of the earth kind of thing
00:59I mean, he really took that adventure thing like all the way
01:02Way further than I would ever even dream in my reality
01:07Like I would watch him on TV or read his book
01:10And that's exactly what we're doing today
01:12I want to welcome him to the show
01:14Thank you so much for joining us, Mr. Nelson
01:16Thank you
01:18Thank you for inviting me
01:19Oh, anytime
01:20Now, okay
01:21I have to show people the book cover
01:24Because literally speaking
01:26What?
01:28What?
01:29Mr. Nelson
01:30Is that you on the cover of that book?
01:33That's my son
01:34That is your son
01:35Oh, you passed it down
01:38Oh my gosh
01:39Wow
01:41So, tell me
01:42Okay, so let's back up a little bit
01:45What started this whole thing?
01:48Well, I've been doing six canoe trips in northern Canada before this
01:55Brian Knock, who planned the trip
02:00Invited his brother to go
02:02His brother had never gone in the wilderness in the north
02:05He's a very good canoeist
02:07But he hadn't gone on any of the trips
02:09So they got together and looked over the maps
02:14And decided that the Awaisa River would be a good river to run
02:18And he invited me to go
02:20And I said, I'd like to take my son if he wanted to go
02:23And so we did the planning
02:27And then, you know, we planned for about a year
02:30Because when you go up to the north
02:34If you forgot something, you do without it
02:37And so you don't forget important things like food
02:41So the planning is critical
02:44But there's no stores
02:46You cannot get any supplies at all
02:50And so you're on your own
02:52And so we got Brian and his brother
02:57Myself and my 17-year-old son
03:00And then Brian's brother had a friend who wanted to go
03:06And Brian had another friend who wanted to go
03:08So there ended up to be six of us to go on this trip
03:14My gosh
03:15So wait, I have to go back, Mr. Nelson
03:18Because as a woman
03:22There are a lot of things that we forget
03:24We go out, even like to the movies
03:28You know, so you're saying that if you forget something
03:31That's it
03:32You can't get anything
03:34You can not get anything
03:35Wow
03:36Were there times that you guys found yourself
03:40Not having something that you had to improvise for?
03:44Well, our very first trip, we planned on catching fish
03:48And we didn't catch much fish
03:49So we ran out of food
03:51But just for one day
03:54Oh my gosh
03:56Oh my gosh
03:58How was that?
03:59Was that nerve-wracking for you?
04:01No, it was just one day
04:04Wow
04:05Was nerve-wracking the next morning
04:07We were supposed to be picked up by a bush pilot
04:11And it was fogged over
04:12We couldn't even see the water from the campsite
04:15And so we thought we were going to be there for another day
04:19And that would be another day without any food
04:23But the pilot landed
04:27The area over the lake was pretty clear
04:31So he was able to land
04:33He came and he said
04:34I'll take four of you and no gear
04:37Or two of you and half your gear
04:41Well, we were out of food
04:43So we said, you take all four of us
04:47Oh yeah
04:48Oh wow
04:49Wow
04:50So you know
04:52This is amazing for me
04:54Because I don't have the courage to do things like this
04:57And everybody has their own little thing that they do
04:59And this is not one of them for me
05:01But for you
05:02The adventures must have been amazing
05:04I mean, tell me
05:05You know, what was it like to be there
05:08With no city lights
05:09No nothing
05:10I mean, what did the sky look like?
05:14I mean, describe everything that you saw for the first time
05:16Just like when you first saw it
05:18What was that like for you?
05:19Well, for all of us
05:22And including my son
05:25We welcome it
05:26We like to be able to think
05:29That we can work it on our own
05:31And you have no one to consult
05:35You work it out on your own
05:37Or you don't do it
05:39So
05:42This trip had lots of very tense moments
05:46And I asked my son
05:48Actually, just a couple of years ago
05:51You know, you never said you wanted to quit
05:53Let's end this as fast as we can
05:56I said, what were your thoughts?
05:58And he says
05:58Oh, I always look forward to the adventure
06:01You're going to take me on the next day
06:04Wow
06:06That's my attitude as well
06:07There's my son
06:09And that's where the ice was covering over this lake
06:13It was thin
06:18We were able to get a pathway
06:21And got back on the river again
06:23At the end of the lake
06:26This is Carl Schmider
06:27Who's going on several trips with us
06:29He loves to fish
06:32He loves fishing more than he does the canoeing
06:35But he goes on the canoe trips
06:37Because the fishing is wonderful
06:41This is amazing
06:42I mean, these pictures
06:45These memories are all in the book
06:48And this is just beautiful
06:50That's Lake Newton
06:53And you see the ice across there
06:55That was the beginning of 85 miles of ice
06:59So we couldn't continue
07:02As we had planned
07:04And so we looked at our options
07:09And decided we could
07:12Forage over to the Seal River
07:14The pilot who flew us in
07:16Said he knew the Seal River was flowing
07:19So we decided to go over to the Seal River
07:24And as you see there were lots of ice
07:28Even when we finished the portage
07:30We had to put in off ice
07:36This is amazing
07:37I mean, was there
07:39Now, were there any times
07:40Where you thought
07:41This is just straight out of a movie
07:43Like, I mean
07:44I can't be living this kind of life
07:47This can't be happening to me
07:50Were there any moments
07:51No, I look forward to the adventure
07:53In no time did I think
07:57You know, this is something
07:58For someone else to do
08:00I always thought of it as
08:02Boy, we got problems
08:04Let's solve them
08:06And get back home
08:13Well, I hope you're enjoying this show
08:15Oh my gosh
08:16I am so, so very excited
08:18To have you here
08:184% of you
08:20The 96% that have watched
08:24Over and over again
08:25And tuned into a lot of my shows
08:27Have not subscribed
08:29I have over 41,000 people here
08:32And that would overfill a stadium
08:34Which is amazing
08:35I never thought I could ever fill a stadium
08:37But, for YouTube
08:39That's kind of a little 4%
08:42So, if the 96% of you
08:45Oh my gosh, that's so many people
08:46Would please take a moment
08:49And click the subscribe button
08:50I would be so grateful
08:52And back to the show
08:53Thank you
08:56Mr. Nelson
08:58You are the quintessential adventurist
09:02And I absolutely love it
09:04And you passed it down to your children
09:05But why write the book?
09:07What was the book's original purpose?
09:11Well
09:15Brian's brother wrote the log for the trip
09:17And he had just sent me an update of it
09:22Using modern technology
09:24He just
09:24Back when we first did the trip
09:27You had to paste pictures in the pages
09:31And things like that
09:33But he built the pictures into the text
09:36And did a wonderful job
09:38My wife came over and said
09:41I need something exciting to read
09:44She was actually just three months before dying
09:48And she was feeling very low
09:51And so I said
09:52Well, this is exciting
09:53Read this
09:54She had never had any interest
09:56In reading about the canoe trips
09:58She didn't read any of the logs
10:00Or anything
10:01The next day
10:02She brings it back
10:03And now
10:04I was amazed
10:05She finished it so fast
10:06So I thought
10:07You didn't like it
10:09And she said
10:09Oh, I could not put it down
10:11Wow
10:12She says
10:13This is the most exciting thing
10:15But if I had known
10:17You were taking these trips
10:18I would never have let you go
10:23Oh, gosh
10:24You hid that from her really good though
10:26Mr. Nelson
10:26You did that on purpose
10:28But, you know
10:29I love them
10:30She hated them
10:31Yeah
10:31I took her on one trip once
10:34And I knew she didn't like it
10:36So I waited a couple years
10:38And I said
10:38You know
10:39That was an interesting trip
10:40We had a lot of fun
10:41She says
10:42That was the worst trip
10:43I took in my whole life
10:48Oh, gosh
10:49I guess
10:50She never went on another one
10:53No
10:54Never went on another one after that
10:59She never went on
11:00No way
11:01No
11:01She would canoe with me
11:02Down in Colorado
11:03Colorado River
11:05And things like that
11:06But
11:07She would not go to Canada
11:10Well, listen
11:11Mr. Nelson
11:12I kind of don't blame her
11:13Okay
11:13I kind of don't blame her
11:15I wouldn't go either
11:16I'm sorry
11:20So
11:21Did you have any kind of moments
11:23With your son
11:24Your
11:25Was it
11:2617-year-old son
11:27During any of the trips
11:28Did you have like a funny moment?
11:31Well
11:32The moment I was most concerned
11:34We were just got on Hudson Bay
11:37And
11:40The river went out
11:41Away
11:42So we were
11:43A couple miles offshore
11:44Coming back into the mainland
11:47And
11:48Off to our left
11:50There was
11:51Two
11:51Huge
11:52Beluga whales
11:53And they came
11:55Swimming right at us
11:56And
11:58I thought
11:59I was thinking of
12:00Moby Dick
12:01And
12:02You know
12:03Where the
12:04Whales
12:05Attacked the
12:06The boat
12:07Yeah
12:08And
12:09But the whales
12:10Got about
12:1130 feet off from us
12:12And dove under us
12:14And they said
12:14Oh
12:14That's fun
12:15They turned around
12:17And went under us again
12:18And then turned around
12:19For the third time
12:21And went under us
12:22And each time
12:23If it
12:23If those were
12:24Whales
12:25That just made a
12:26Slight little
12:27Misjudgment
12:29We would have flown into the water
12:31And
12:31Actually
12:32We wouldn't have survived
12:34We were
12:34A couple miles offshore
12:36And the water temperature
12:38Is around 50 degrees
12:39So that was the most scary moment
12:42I had in the trip
12:43Oh no
12:44No
12:45No
12:45No
12:46No
12:47No
12:48I'm glad
12:50I'm glad you're still here
12:51I'm glad everybody's still here
12:53Because
12:53No
12:54No
12:55You know
12:56Most people say
12:58Oh
12:59I'd love to go on that trip
13:01And
13:02I've had a couple people say
13:04I'd like to go
13:05But every time I ask them
13:06If they can make it this summer
13:08They always have some excuse
13:11And
13:11You still go?
13:12People
13:13Who have gone on the trips
13:15Don't ever invite me again
13:17I
13:17I
13:18I don't want to go
13:19You still go?
13:22I
13:22I run 19 times
13:24What?
13:25Mr. Nelson
13:26You still go on those trips?
13:28No
13:28I'm too old now
13:30I was going to say
13:31Mr. Nelson
13:32You cannot be going on those trips
13:33I forbade you to go on those trips
13:35No
13:36No
13:37Oh my gosh
13:3819 times?
13:40That's like tempting fate
13:42And
13:42You know what?
13:43I saw a video
13:44On the website
13:46Is this video about
13:47The
13:48What is this?
13:49The book trailer?
13:50This is the book trailer
13:51Can we see that?
13:55Yeah
13:56Yes
13:56I've seen it
13:57Awesome
13:57We're going to go ahead
13:58And see the book
13:59We're going to go ahead
14:00And see that book trailer
14:01Okay
14:01Let's watch that
14:02I want to see it
14:07Bye
14:08Bye
14:09Bye
14:10You
14:11Bye
14:19Bye
14:21Bye
14:31Hi
15:54Some days we had beautiful days like this, gorgeous weather.
16:00Wow.
16:01Wow.
16:02Mr. Nelson, that almost made me cry.
16:04I mean, literally speaking, the times that you had, the moments that you had to share
16:08with your son, you know, those are moments you just, you cherish for like eternity, you
16:15know, like forever, like that must have been amazing for you guys to have shared that time
16:22together.
16:23What is, when you look back on those moments, do you regret any of them or is it something
16:29that you'd love to do one more time?
16:32Well, I love to do it.
16:33I don't regret any of it.
16:36It is nice to look back to see that I've survived it, but I'm happy that I did it and
16:43I enjoyed
16:44it.
16:46I love it.
16:47That was my seventh trip.
16:50And so I had 12 more than I did.
16:53The trips range from 11 days was the shortest.
16:57Most of them were around 21 days.
17:01My longest was 37 days.
17:06I could see this being a movie, especially with, with the whales.
17:11Okay.
17:11That's to me, I could see it.
17:13I could see, is this going to be a movie?
17:16I'd like to tell somebody to make a movie of it.
17:20This should be, if anybody's watching out there that has the budget contact, Mr. Nelson.
17:26I will, I will put the link to his website.
17:28You can contact him in the description box.
17:31This should be a movie.
17:33It should be a movie.
17:35The times that you share with your kids, the talks that you probably had, the fires, the
17:40day you guys didn't find any food.
17:42I mean, all of that is like movie stuff.
17:45Okay.
17:45And it's a true story that, that to me, that, that takes the cake.
17:50That takes the cake.
17:51I absolutely love it.
17:52I think it should be a movie and I will be, I will buy the first ticket.
17:57I definitely will.
17:58Well, I think it would make a very good movie.
18:01It's got everything now from beautiful canoe days and terrifying nights on Hudson Bay.
18:12It must've been cold.
18:15It wasn't terribly cold, but the night on Hudson Bay, I got very, very cold.
18:21So, wow.
18:23Wow.
18:24Well, Mr. Nelson, I want to thank you so much for being on the show and, and for bringing
18:28your, your story to us.
18:30I truly, truly hope that someone contact somebody, contact your, your publishing company, somebody
18:39get this sent to a movie production company, because this should be one of the adventure
18:45stories of the year.
18:47If not the best, you should, you get the right people on this and you can win the Oscar.
18:52I'm not going to lie to you.
18:54I agree with you.
18:55I think.
18:55I agree.
18:56Oh yeah.
18:57This, you know, and, and I've seen lots of books, but I think this one touched my heart
19:01only because you did this with your, with your son.
19:04And you did this with people you love.
19:06There was adventure.
19:07There was, uh, you know, the whales that was a day with no food.
19:11There was the nights of talking with your kid.
19:13There were 80 miles of freaking ice that you couldn't even get through.
19:16And you had to, you had to reroute yourself, not even knowing if the reroute was going to
19:22be any good.
19:23I mean, literally speaking, that is movie.
19:27That is, that is movie.
19:28That is movie stuff right there.
19:30That is it.
19:31Oh yeah.
19:32Oh yeah.
19:32I'm sorry.
19:33I'm all excited about it, but somebody needs to get this and turn it into a movie.
19:38Definitely.
19:38Definitely.
19:39Now, how do you call, what is the name of the, uh, what is it?
19:43Rivers, uh, seal rivers.
19:45But how do you say the name of the seal river?
19:49Well, the Thea Weiser river is an Inuit name.
