00:45and aggressive policies against neighboring Arab countries.
00:52Hello and welcome to From the South.
00:54I'm Sofia Fernández from the Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:57We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:12The Mexican Secretariat of National Defense confirmed on Sunday an operation against the criminal
01:16group Jalisco New Generation Cartel that resulted in the deaths of criminal leader Rubén Nemesio
01:22Oseguera, also known as Menchú.
01:24In an official statement, the office reported special forces of the Mexican army planned and
01:29executed an operation in Talpa, in the state of Jalisco, with the help of military intelligence
01:34from the National Intelligence Center and the Attorney General's Office.
01:38The operation resulted in the deaths of four members of the criminal group Jalisco New Generation
01:43cartel, including the leader Rubén Nemesio Oseguera, and three seriously wounded.
01:49Moreover, two other members of his criminal organization were arrested and various weapons
01:53and armored vehicles were seized, including rocket launchers capable of shooting down an
01:58aircraft and destroying armored vehicles.
02:01With these actions, the Ministry of National Defense reaffirms his commitment to contribute
02:05to the strengthening of Mexico's security.
02:16In the aftermath, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum took to her social media ex to express
02:22the events, informing the Secretariat of National Defense reported on the operation carried out
02:27this morning by the Mexican army and the National Guard, which led to various roadblocks and other
02:32reactions.
02:33There is full coordination with the governments of all states.
02:37We must remain informed and calm.
02:39Sheinbaum stated that the Security Cabinet's social media accounts are providing ongoing updates
02:43and assured that activities are proceeding normally throughout most of the country.
02:48In this regard, she expressed,
02:50My gratitude goes out to the Mexican army, National Guard, Armed Forces and Security Cabinet.
02:55We work every day for peace, security, justice and the well-being of Mexico.
03:07For his part, Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus said federal forces conducted an operation in Tapalpa on
03:13Sunday, which resulted in clashes in the area.
03:16Lemus added that he has instructed authorities from the three levels of government to immediately
03:21set up a security committee and activate the red alert in order to deter attacks against
03:25the population. In response to the drug-related roadblocks and violent incidents that have
03:30occurred in several municipalities of the state of Jalisco, including vehicle burnings, motorcycle
03:35clashes and shooting in the city of Ixtapa, the Mexican government emphasized that coordination
03:41with the states continues, with the participation of federal institutions and the aim of protecting
03:47the population and restoring horror.
03:56In Mexico, the death of Rebuendemencio Oseguera Cervantes, alias El Meso, closes a chapter of one of the world's
04:04most wanted criminal leaders and puts the spotlight on his criminal organization.
04:08The Jalisco New Generation Cartel is classified by Mexican authorities as the third most dangerous
04:14criminal organization in the planet. Under the leadership of Oseguera Cervantes, the group
04:19implemented a corporate expansion model, filling the power vacuums left by other cartels. The U.S.
04:26Department of Justice included it among the five most dangerous transnational threats.
04:30The organization is also noted for the extreme violence, use of technology such as drones with
04:35explosives and extensive money laundering networks that have allowed it to operate in the United
04:40States, Europe, Asia and Australia. Its main business is trafficking tons of methamphetamine,
04:46cocaine and heroin mixed with fentanyl to the United States, an activity that has caused a security
04:51crisis in Mexico.
05:00In other news, an internationalist brigade composed of activists and human rights defenders
05:05concluded its journey in the emblematic 23 de enero parish in Caracas, Venezuela. During the journey of
05:11Saturday, the foreign guests visited El Panal Comune, located in the parish. With calls for an end to the
05:18war and respect for the self-determination of peoples, the Internationalist Brigade concluded its visit,
05:23leaving a message of Latin American unit and a promise to continue the fight against U.S.
05:29interventionism. In this context, in exclusive statements to TELASUR, Code Pink leader Medea
05:35Benjamin condemned Washington's attacks and retaliated the call for the return of the
05:39U.S. president Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cili Flores.
05:51Moving now to Peru, surveys revealed that the newly elected interim president José María Belcazar
05:57faces a 63% disapproval rating. The report detailed that only 24% of those surveyed
06:03support the appointment of the president, following the removal of José Heri. Meanwhile,
06:0881% believe that under the leadership of the current government of José María Belcazar,
06:13the situation in the country will not improve. This approval remains at similar levels nationwide,
06:18reflecting a climate of low expectations for the new head of state's administration.
06:31And Brazilian president Luiz Ennácio Lula da Silva stated that he rejects the idea of a new Cold War,
06:36and confirmed that Brazil will not support policies that promote global confrontation.
06:40His statement comes amid various economic and political decisions that the U.S. President Donald
06:45Trump has pursued against different countries. These include the blockade of Cuba, the siege of Iran,
06:51intervention in Venezuela, the promotion of a so-called peace board, and the increase of global
06:56tariffs by 15%, following a Supreme Court ruling that declared his target offensive illegal.
07:02The Brazilian president hopes to meet with Trump in Washington in early March to discuss trade,
07:08investment, immigration, and university cooperation.

07:48Welcome back to From the South, and we continue with more information. In the United States,
07:52over 7,000 flights were cancelled in several airports in the Northeast, amid a strong winter storm.
07:58According to local reports, a historic winter storm has placed 59 million people under weather warnings,
08:04and Wisconsin power outages and travel bans. Moreover, states of emergency have been declared
08:10in multiple U.S. states, including Massachusetts, Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, and Rhode Island.
08:16Officials in New York warned the storm could rank among the city's 10 wars in 150 years,
08:22with airports in the area experiencing the most disruptions. Forecasters say most of the U.S.
08:27Northeast and the Canadian maritime will be impacted from Sunday evening to Monday.
08:40Moving out to France, the town of Lagoun is on high alert after the Garonne River overflowed,
08:46affecting homes, roads, and agricultural areas. Weather experts describe these floods as extraordinary,
08:53explaining that they are a continuation of a period of flooding that began earlier this year.
08:57The rapid rise in water levels forced several residents in low-lying areas to evacuate,
09:02while rescue teams work to reinforce temporary barriers and assist trapped families.
09:07Authorities also urged the population to avoid the riverbanks and remain alert for the possibility
09:12of further rises in water levels in the coming days.
09:22In other news, the Chinese government urged the Donald Trump administration to immediately remove all
09:27unilateral tariffs after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned most of the taxes imposed since his
09:32return to the presidency. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce described the measures as violations of
09:38global trade and announced a comprehensive assessment of the impacts this current ruling
09:42will have on Asian experts. Beijing argues that this ruling confirms that the use of national
09:47emergencies to impose tariffs was an abuse of authority. Trade tensions escalate as Chinese
09:52companies await the return of millions of dollars in tariffs. U.S. President Trump declared last
09:57Saturday that he would raise the global tariffs by 15 percent, which is legally allowed.
10:10In other news, Greenland and Denmark authorities rejected U.S. President on Trump's deployment of a
10:15hospital chip to the Arctic island, in the latest point of friction between the territories after Trump's
10:21statements about ceasing Greenland. In a post in his social media account TrueSocial on Saturday,
10:27U.S. President Donald Trump said he would deploy a hospital chip to Greenland, alleging that many
10:31people there are sick and not receiving care. For his part, Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens Frederick
10:37Nielsen responded with a no thank you, highlighting the quality of a public health system in the Arctic
10:43territory, where, opposed to the ones of the U.S., treatment is free for all citizens.
10:59Meanwhile, Oman has confirmed that the next round of talks between the United States and Iran will be
11:03held on February 26. Oman's foreign minister, Barabin Ahmad al-Busaydi, confirmed that talks between the
11:10U.S. and Iran will take place in Geneva. Iranian President Massoud Perseskian committed that Iran
11:16is prepared for any development in negotiations with the United States. The United States has
11:21transferred over 50 combat aircrafts, destroyed cruisers and escorted submarines to Western Asia
11:27in recent weeks. At the same time, the most recent meetings mediated by Oman were held in Moscow,
11:32the capital of Oman, on February 6, and in Geneva, Switzerland, on February 17.

12:05We'll be right back with more from the South. Don't go away!
12:32Welcome back to From the South.
12:34We go to Israel, where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu formalized a new security doctrine
12:39marking an aggressive shift in the Middle East region.
12:42The plan abandons containment for pre-antifaction and deep military reaction.
12:47It establishes buffer zones in neighboring countries, expanding the Zionist occupation
12:52under the guise of national security.
12:54And under the banner of the War of Renewal, the Israeli military seeks to bring combat
12:58to hostile territories and capitals.
13:01This new logic projects limited battles in favor of constant operations to neutralize
13:05any potential threat before it can consolidate.
13:08This approach legitimizes the use of disproportionate force and ongoing interference in the sovereignty
13:14of neighboring European countries.
13:26Meanwhile, the Israeli army has kidnapped more than 100 Palestinians in the West Bank amid celebrations
13:31for the month of Ramadan.
13:32Social organizations denounce arbitrary detentions and recent attacks by Israeli settlers in
13:38Palestinian territory.
13:39According to reports, the arrests are accompanied by interrogations, physical assaults and a ban
13:44of entering the Al-Qaqsa Mosque.
13:46They are also warned that these arrest campaigns are only a pretext for continuing the expansion
13:51of illegal Zionist settlements.
14:01In other news on Sunday, Pakistan carried out an airstrike in eastern Afghanistan, killing
14:0617 civilians, including 11 children, and wounded five others.
14:09The operation hits residential areas in Nangarhar province, intensifying regional tensions between
14:16the two countries.
14:17The head of information for the Regional Department of Information and Culture, Kuraishi Balblum,
14:23told local media that the attacks hit the Bejshut district in Nangarhar, directly affecting
14:28homes and a religious school.
14:30The search for more victims has been delayed due to difficulties in removing debris.
14:35This attack is part of a series of Pakistani incursions that have killed 70 people and injured
14:39more than 400 since October.
14:50For its part, the Afghan government condemns the Pakistani bombings that kill civilians.
14:55The Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs protested the recent attacks, calling them a clear violation
15:00of Pakistan's territorial integrity.
15:02The Afghan Foreign Ministry accuses the Pakistani army of bombing civilian areas in Nangarhar and
15:07Pakhita, including the killing of women and children.
15:11The Pakistani government claims the attacks were in retaliation against Pakistani Taliban
15:16camps, accused of organizing suicide attacks for Afghan territory.
15:20It is important to note that these incidents are taking place in a context of growing cross-border
15:24violence since 2021.
15:34And amid the current tensions with France over control of natural resources, young people
15:38in Niger have launched a national campaign in defense of sovereignty.
15:42In the capital of the African country, Niamey, youth leaders call for readiness for a mobilization
15:48in defense of what they consider an external aggression.
15:51Tension is focused on control of uranium, following the expulsion of French forces and the national
15:56nationalization of key mines after the 2023 coup.
15:59It should be noted that with these actions, Niger is strengthening these alliances with Sahel
16:04countries and moving away from the political and economic influence of Paris.
16:28The Harbing World Rise and Snow Park, the world's largest scene park of its kind, closed on Saturday due to
16:34an early rise in temperature that caused much of its scenery and decorative elements to
16:38melt.
16:39According to the resource management, the 27th edition of this popular winter attraction in
16:44Harbing, the capital of China's northeastern Heilongjiang province, ended its season earlier
16:50than usual.
16:51This year, due to safety concerns, an ensured quality experience for visitors during the thaw.
16:56Visitors who had purchased tickets can obtain a full refund.
17:00As a special gesture, those who bought tickets for the period between February 20th and 28th
17:05will receive free admission to the next year's event.
17:16Maslenitsa is one of the oldest and most beloved holidays in Russian culture.
17:20It marks the transition from winter to spring and symbolizes renewal of the start of a new
17:25cycle.
17:26Rooted in pre-Christian Slavic traditions honoring the gods of fertility and the sun, it was later
17:32seamlessly integrated into the Christian calendar.
17:37Maslenitsa, celebrated in Russia one week before Lent, is an ancient festival that symbolizes
17:43the end of winter and the arrival of spring.
17:46The festival has pre-Christian origins, but its name is more recent and means week of butter,
17:53precisely because it is permitted to eat dairy products, fish and butter, known as Maslow
17:58in Russian.
18:01When Christianity arrived in Russia, it did not destroy the old foundations of the life
18:07of the polytheistic slots, which was linked to the solar calendar.
18:11Simply, orthodoxy filled the old forms with new content.
18:15Maslenitsa is a new name for the pagan festival in honor of the spring equinox.
18:20It was dedicated to the deity Yarala, the pagan spring festival, under the influence of Christianity,
18:27became the preparatory week of Maslenitsa before the great fast.
18:35The famous blinis, Russian pancakes, have been a symbol of the holidays since the 19th century.
18:41Today, they are part of traditional urban fast food, a hot and filling snack in different
18:47regions of Russia.
18:49Maslenitsa traditions tend to vary according to local climates and customs.
18:56Today is the spring equinox.
18:58We celebrate it as a family.
19:00We bake cakes.
19:01In our region, we eat traditional tartar dishes and, of course, the traditional sweet chak-chak.
19:07We also have a ritual bonfire before the day of the festival.
19:10They are coated with paste and throw into this bonfire, as if it were the end of the previous
19:15cycle and its renewal.
19:21Maslenitsa is a week almost like carnival, which ends with the burning of a straw doll symbolizing
19:26winter that is destroying the old for a new cycle of fertility.
19:31It is a time of joy that culminates with forgiveness Sunday.
19:38First of all, what we need now, and we can do it, is obtain the support of the higher powers
19:43for the entire year.
19:44This is a symbol of the sun, of light, and baking pancakes is a kind of oath, saying that
19:48I am on the side of light.
19:50And the second thing is that we need to be good people, willing to change the world for
19:53the better, to be people who love, who are willing to be joyful, who are willing to live
19:57a full life.
20:02During the Soviet era, Maslenitsa lost his religious character and became the farewell to winter
20:11festival.
20:12Today it is one of the most beloved and anticipated popular festivities of the year.
20:17It is celebrated with fervor throughout Russia, preserving the ancient traditions of hospitality
20:22and universal reconciliation.
20:24It is a time when the bling is a symbol of the sun, beautiful days, good harvests, harmonious
20:30marriages, and healthy children.
20:37And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
