00:07China announced the preliminary agreements reached with the United States following
00:12President Donald Trump's visit. In Pakistan, Prime Minister Sheba Sharif said he hopes to
00:22host a new round of dialogue between the United States and Iran that will enable progress toward
00:28lasting peace. And Peru's national election board confirmed that Keiko Fujimori and Roberto
00:39Sanchez have advanced to the second round of the presidential elections. Hello and welcome to
00:50From the South. My name is Pablo Micheliche from the Telesur studios in Caracas, Venezuela. We begin
01:07with the news.
01:08China announced the preliminary agreements reached with the United States following President
01:12Donald Trump's visit. The Ministry of Commerce detailed that both parties agreed to establish
01:18an investment council and a trade council to negotiate reciprocal reductions in tariffs. Agreements
01:25in agriculture and aviation were also announced while negotiations on final details moved forward.
01:31The agreements are part of the dialogue table held by President Xi Jinping and Donald Trump,
01:36which various topics were discussed amid global tensions.
01:45In Spain, over 6,800,000 voters in the southern region of Andalusia are casting their ballots on Sunday
01:53to elect the new regional parliament. The 10,500 polling stations are habilited across the territory,
02:01open at 9 a.m. and are scheduled to close at 8 p.m. Andalusians are called to vote to
02:10elect the 109 deputies that make up
02:13the regional parliament with 55 seats needed to achieve an absolute majority. 369,000 new voters will exercise
02:21their right for the first time, with 302,000 casting their ballots from abroad. The ongoing election is the most
02:30populous Spanish region with set the tone for what kind of conservative will be in poll position to confirm
02:38Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in next year's polls. The Central Right People's Party is currently ahead in service with the
02:45weekend contest, probably determining whether it will pursue a moderate or hardline course into the 2027 race.
03:07The Russian Air Force confirmed that it has destroyed a total of 556 Ukrainian drones in the last 24 hours.
03:15The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that a series of defense operations took place in more than a thousand regions,
03:22including the Crimea and the waters of the Azov and Black Sea. In Moscow, despite the high level of effectiveness
03:30of the
03:30air defense systems, local authorities confirmed the death of three people, 12 injured, and serious damage to civil and
03:38energy infrastructure. Some of these victims were workers at an oil processing plant.
03:50On Sunday, the Russian Defense Ministry's Air Defense repealed a massive Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow and the
03:58surrounding regions. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sovyanin said that air defenses shot down over 120 drones
04:05heading for the city in the past 24 hours. According to the preliminary reports, over 12 people were
04:11wounded in the capital city.
04:28A Canadian citizen tested positive for Hantavirus after being evacuated from the virus strike and
04:34cruise ship by Honduras. According to officials from the province of British Columbia, the individual was
04:42one of four people isolated on Vancouver Island after leaving the ship had developed male symptoms.
04:49British Columbia Health Officer Bonnie Henry said the person's test came back as presumptive positive on
04:56Friday, adding that the four isolated former passengers had not had any contact with the police since
05:03arriving in Canada. The official also emphasized that unlike COVID, they don't think Hantavirus has the potential to
05:11become a pandemic. Meanwhile, of the six Canadians who were on the Dutch ship, five have not tested positive so
05:18far.
05:29The World Health Organization declared a public health emergency of international concern due to the
05:34outbreak of the Bundibugio virus, a strain of Ebola. Most of these cases occurred in the Democratic Republic of
05:41Congo and Uganda, where eight cases were confirmed, 246 are suspected and 80 deaths have been reported.
05:49The WHO Director General determined that the event is extraordinary due to the high fatality rate, the lack of
05:56approved vaccines or specific treatments, population mobility and the context of insecurity in the affected areas.
06:03Cases have been confirmed in the capital of Uganda, Kampala and Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo,
06:11which raises the risk of regional spread.
06:18And now we have a short break coming up. Stay tuned with us. We will be right back.
06:32Welcome back. Iran will not longer allow military equipment belonging to the enemy states to pass through the state of
06:38Hormuz.
06:39On Saturday, Iran's first Vice President Mohammad Rezarev said that Iran had previously allowed military shipments to
06:46transit through the strategic waterways, including equipment later used against the country, insisting that this
06:53policy will not continue. Rezarev further stated that Iran had previously given up this rise of sovereignty over the
07:00Strait of Hormuz, adding that the Persian nation would no longer permit the passage of such cargo through the Strait.
07:07The comments marked Teheran's latest assertion of control over the Strait of Hormuz, following earlier remarks indicating that
07:14Teheran will rebuild a new professional mechanism to administer transit through the waterway without offering details.
07:28The streets of Teheran are once again the scene of a massive popular demonstration in support of the government and
07:35the Islamic revolution.
07:36Thousands of Iranian citizens took to the country's main avenues and squares on Saturday to express their unwavering loyalty to
07:44the
07:44supreme leader and the principles of the Islamic revolution. Proudly waving flags of the Islamic Republic, the protesters
07:51preaffirmed their commitment to defending national sovereignty in the face of foreign interference and media
07:58destabilization campaigns. This continuity in the popular response demonstrates the strength of the Iranian political
08:05system and the conscious support of the social base for its model of independence, justice and resistance.
08:27In Pakistan, Prime Minister Sheba Sharif said he hopes to host a new round of dialogue between the United States
08:34and Iran that will enable progress to
08:36the world lasting peace. The official stance positions Pakistan as the central mediator in the ongoing conflict after hosting the
08:44first direct meeting between the delegations from Washington and Teheran. Sharif stated that by exhausting all his efforts to secure
08:52a new
08:53round of negotiations in Islamabad, the Pakistani government seeks to prevent the collapse of the current ceasefire and offer a
08:59viable
09:00diplomatic solution to a war that threatens the security and stability of the global energy supply. This initiative comes a
09:07critical
09:08moment of regional and international mobilization to contain the military escalation linked to the war against Iran, a conflict currently
09:15governed by fragile ceasefire agreement.
09:26The resistance movement Hezbollah is expanding its defensive operations against Israeli occupation forces in southern Lebanon. The movement announced on
09:36Saturday that it carried out a series of operations against Israeli troops, gatherings and vehicles in response to the ongoing
09:43violations of the ceasefire. The Islamic resistance has published photos showing attack on Israeli occupation forces in southern Lebanon, including
09:52targeting of military vehicles in Bin Jabal and bulldozers in their Syria. These latest operations are part of Lebanon's resistance
10:01to the ongoing
10:02main aggressions of the Syrian regime that, despite the ceasefire, has killed almost 3,000 people. In this sense, Hezbollah
10:09rejects the direct
10:10negotiations in Washington, emphasizing that developments on the ground remain the decisive factor in enforcing any ceasefire.
10:24The United Kingdom announced the deployment of low-cost anti-drone systems to the Middle East, as tension in the
10:30region remained high.
10:31The U.K. government says it has deployed a new system on Royal Air Force jets in the Middle East
10:38that, according to their official
10:40statement, can destroy targets precisely and at a fraction of the price of missiles currently used. London claimed the move
10:50could
10:50enhance the protection of British personnel and allied forces in the region against drone attacks. This deployment follows most confrontations
10:58in the region where Iran launched retaliatory drones and missile strikes at multiple Gulf country targets, including
11:05energy and military sites, after the start of the joint U.S.-Israeli aggression against the Persian nation.
11:21Hundreds of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered before the Castle of Good Hope in South Africa to commemorate the
11:2878th anniversary of the Napa. During the rally, which was called by the Solidarity with Palestine campaign, activists and union
11:36leaders
11:36waved Palestinian flags on the roof of the historic fortress and unfolded banners with slogans in support of the Palestinian
11:44cause.
11:45The Napa, which means catastrophe in Arabic, is a national day of remembrance for Palestinians regarding the 1948 displacement of
11:53a majority of their people
11:55war, when an estimated 750,000 Palestinians fled or were expelled from the homes during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
12:10In the Comoros, one person was killed and five were injured in confrontations between protesters and security forces
12:17on the island of Anjuan on the island of Anjuan on Saturday as unrest over fuel prices hikes spread across
12:23the archipelago.
12:25Clashes broke out on Friday after a meeting between the mayor of Miranxi and the Fishermen's Association,
12:31which has been on strike since Wednesday in protest at rising fuel prices.
12:36A joint man was fatally shot at dawn after a group tried to disarm officers clearing the streets on the
12:44island of Anjuan.
12:45The unrest, which has triggered a strike by truckers, showkeepers and fishermen,
12:51began after a government announced last week a sharp fuel prices increases,
12:55including 46% for diesel linked to the economic fallout from the U.S.-Israeli War on Iran.
13:07Financial break, but before we invite you to tune in for the next episode of Overlap,
13:12or for the next episode of Overlap, or conversations from across the world,
13:17that this time poses the questions identity politics or class solidarity.
13:20Don't miss it this Sunday, May 17 at 9 p.m. Krakastan,
13:24and on Monday, May 18 at 9 a.m. Beijing time. Financial break. Don't go away.
13:52Welcome back.
13:53On Saturday, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Barrilla reiterated the nation poses no threat to the United States national security.
14:00This amid ongoing foreshadowing of direct military aggression against the island.
14:06During an event in New Delhi organized by the India-Cuba Solidarity Movement marking the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations
14:13with Havana,
14:14the top Cuban diplomat addressed the continuous military threats by Washington and urged the international community to help prevent a
14:22military move on the island.
14:24Rodriguez warned of the unpredictable consequences a military aggression could have for Havana and for the Caribbean and Latin American
14:31region.
14:31In this regard, he called for stronger international support and urged people to tell the truth about what is really
14:38going on on the island.
14:42The appeal today to friends, peace-loving peoples and advocates of just causes is to confront the lies and mobilize
14:53in order to prevent a foreseeable military aggression against Cuba.
14:58We are not naive. A military aggression could have unpredictable consequences for the region and for Cuba in particular.
15:09It is our desire to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe, the shedding of blood and the death of both our compatriots
15:19and American Jews.
15:21Should a military action take place, the warmongering seal of the current neophasis in the White House will clash with
15:31the resolve, preparedness and traditions of a struggle of our people.
15:43On Saturday, Havana hosted the 11th edition of the Cuba-Russia French race, a sport event that strengthens the historic
15:50bond of solidarity and strategic cooperation between the two nations.
16:01Over 2,000 runners gathered in the capital for debate, which commemorates the Soviet victory over fascism in the Great
16:08Patriotic War and also marks the 66th anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
16:14With a road of approximately 4 kilometers long, participants included professional and amateur athletes, local government employees, students, school children
16:23and representatives of Russian and foreign diplomatic missions.
16:27The initiative, which began in 2015 as another symbol of the friendship between the two countries, is particularly important in
16:35the current geopolitical climate as it challenges the United States' attempts to isolate Cuba.
16:47Peru's National Election Board confirmed that Keiko Fujimori and Roberto Sanchez have advanced to the second round of the presidential
16:54elections.
16:54The electoral body presented the official certificate with the results, which showed that Fujimori received 17.1% of the
17:02votes and Sanchez 12%.
17:04In turn, the chairman of the National Electoral Board, Roberto Borneo, confirmed that the second round will be held on
17:10June 7th, since no candidate received the 50% of the votes required to win in the first round.
17:16Fujimori and Sanchez will compete for the presidency amid severe political instability, with Peru having had eight presidents since 2019.
17:32We're going now to Bolivia.
17:33The police and the armed forces have been working since earlier Saturday morning to clear road blockades that were set
17:39up 10 days ago as part of the indefinite strike call by the Workers' Union.
17:43Joint operations by police and military succeeded in clearing several roadblocks leaving from the city of El Alto into the
17:51interior, but residents from various neighborhoods came out to restablish the blockades and resist the actions.
17:58People gathered in massive numbers to block the road and in support of the farmers who began the blockade 10
18:05days ago.
18:06The government threw the presidential spokesperson called on residents to scale back their protest and called the police-military operation
18:14and unleashed humanitarian corridor intended to minimize the impact on the population.
18:25As more and more city governments privatized their parks across Brazil, many working-class families are feeling squeezed out.
18:34Our correspondent Brian Muir has more.
18:38Across Brazil more and more city parks are being privatized to release agreements that turn their management over to private
18:44companies.
18:44In 2025, four city parks were privatized in Recife.
18:49Far-right Sao Paulo Governor Tarsisio Freitas has announced privatization plans for six parks by the end of 2026, and
18:56the mayor of Rio de Janeiro recently announced plans to privatize 26 parks.
19:01Supporters say that privatization makes management more efficient, but critics argue it is making them less democratic.
19:10The problems with parks that are turned over to the private sector is that they operate for profit.
19:16For this, they have to commercialize and sell the space in the park, be it for advertising or expensive restaurants
19:24and this leads to a gentrification of the park.
19:27In other words, in addition to losing some of its original characteristics as a place to relax and think, the
19:34fact that they charge for the activities that take place in the park makes it inaccessible for the lower income
19:40population.
19:45Recife's Jaqueira Park was privatized last year. Since then, the park has begun to fill up with expensive food kiosks
19:52and shops.
19:52The city's only public BMX bicycle race course was ripped down, along with several century-old trees, and replaced with
20:00a smaller parody to make way for a shopping mall-style food court.
20:03Meanwhile, some families are saying they no longer feel welcome holding picnics there.
20:09My analysis is, this is a new strategy to reproduce the process of exclusion.
20:15These are parks for which we have received various reports of people being unable to enter them,
20:21or who were kicked out by security guards, or that they do not feel comfortable in these spaces.
20:28The right to the city is the right of all residents, especially the poor, not only to enjoy every benefit
20:34that the city has to offer, but to be able to change it to best suit their needs.
20:39By that definition, privatizing parks represents a denial of this right.
20:44Brian Meir, Telesur, Recife.
21:00In El Salvador, the number of areas affected by extreme temperatures has risen to 13.
21:06The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources stated that the heat wave will continue, but a gradual decline is forecast
21:13for the coming weeks.
21:13In addition, the agency urged the public to take preventive measures to mitigate the negative impact of the high temperatures.
21:20At the moment, the municipality of Weha is the most affected, with 40.8 degrees Celsius followed by the Perkin
21:28region, which set a record by reaching 33.6 degrees.
21:38The Beijing Weather Observatory issued a blue alert for the Chinese capital warning that some locations could record accumulated rainfall
21:46of between 50 and 70 millimeters.
21:49In the face of heavy rain forecast in northern China, several rail routes were suspended, giving passengers 30 days to
21:55process digital refunds.
21:57In parallel, the agricultural sector issued an alert for possible floods on farmland and severe damage to wheat plantations.
22:11Like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
