00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02Oh, that's awesome.
00:04That's a 1958 Ferrari bimbo racer.
00:07Are all the parts here?
00:08I hope all the parts are there.
00:09So what is all this stuff?
00:11We're actually a private resort and zoological garden.
00:13And our pride and joy are tigers.
00:15Want to come see them?
00:16Yeah.
00:16No.
00:18You're going to love this thing.
00:19It's going to be insane.
00:21Hey, Matthew, come on out.
00:24Oh, my God.
00:28Look at a man's workbench.
00:30You see his passions.
00:33His work's in progress.
00:36The things that drive him crazy.
00:41Projects that?
00:42You get the point.
00:44Anyway, every workbench tells a story.
00:47And this is ours.
00:49American Restoration.
00:55I love restoring American-made items from the 40s and 50s.
00:59But sometimes imports from other countries are equally as interesting and very stunning.
01:04Who's this, Rick?
01:07I don't know.
01:09Hey.
01:09Hey, how are you?
01:10I'm Rick.
01:11My name's Ken.
01:12Ken, good to meet you.
01:13What can I do for you?
01:14I got a little project here I'd like you to look at.
01:15Let's see.
01:18Oh!
01:19That's bad.
01:20That's awesome.
01:20That's a 1958 Ferrari bimbo racer.
01:23Let me get a table.
01:24I'm here at Rick's Restorations today to get my wife's 1958 bimbo racer restored.
01:29My wife has had this car since she was five.
01:31And the main reason I like to get this restored is so my grandchildren can ride in it and enjoy
01:36it as much as my wife did.
01:37It's a Ferrari Spider.
01:39Right.
01:39These were cool because they were designed by the actual car designer, Giovanni Muccioletti.
01:44And they were just exact replica of the Spider Ferrari.
01:49Yeah, it's cool.
01:49Where'd you get it?
01:50It was bought from my wife when she was a child by her parents.
01:53Really?
01:54The idea that I'm here.
01:56Really?
01:56I want to have a big surprise for her when it's all done up.
01:58That'd be a nice surprise.
02:00And she drove it around in the yard when she was a little girl.
02:03And then?
02:04Keep going.
02:04There's got to be more of a story because I see it right now.
02:07Somebody started.
02:08And then somebody tried to restore it.
02:10Ah.
02:10And it got taken apart.
02:11It's been apart for about 40 years.
02:13Wow.
02:14The other thing that I was noticing is this is the friction motor.
02:17This was designed to where it rubs on the tire and makes it work.
02:46Mm-hmm.
02:47Cool.
02:47It's got brakes.
02:48I didn't see the windshield.
02:50The windshield is missing.
02:51It's something I probably have to make.
02:53Yes.
02:53I mean, I would imagine how I think you want to restore it, but how do you want to restore
02:56it?
02:57I want to restore it to as original as you can get it.
02:59I like it Ferrari red again.
03:00Okay.
03:01That's infamous Ferrari red.
03:02I would like the interior back to tan.
03:04Okay.
03:05Just like the original Ferraris were.
03:06Right.
03:07Right.
03:07Okay.
03:08And then working.
03:09Working.
03:10Working again, right?
03:11So what do you think this is going to cost me to get done?
03:14I mean, the thing is, it's basically like a little car.
03:17The work that's going to be involved is stripping all the paint off, doing all that body
03:21work, going through the chassis, making all of it work, figuring out what's needed and
03:25not.
03:25And then I've got to upholster it.
03:27So I'm looking at $6,500 to do the whole thing.
03:31I guess for my grandchildren, I think it'll be fine.
03:35Let's go ahead and do it.
03:36Awesome.
03:36Awesome.
03:37Good, good, good.
03:38Awesome.
03:38This will be my first Ferrari, I'll tell you.
03:40Right inside.
03:41Putting $6,500 into the car is a lot, but I'm hoping when I come back and see it, that
03:45it'll all be well worth it.
03:52So you two are going to be the first at the shop to actually work on a Ferrari.
03:56Nice.
03:57Because that's what this is.
03:58This bimbo racer is going to be a huge job.
04:00That's badass.
04:01It is badass.
04:03First thing, I'm going to have Kyle and Roy test the motor.
04:06Hopefully it's working because if it's not, it's going to be near impossible to find another
04:10one.
04:10And while they're doing that, I'm taking the body to be prepped and painted.
04:14Kyle, you ready to test this thing?
04:16Yeah.
04:17Rick wants us to test all the moving parts on this car.
04:20The problem is, if there's anything wrong with the motor, we stand a chance of burning it
04:23out.
04:24Should be able to ground this guy out right here and we got power.
04:27You sure?
04:28Yep.
04:28Moment of truth.
04:29You ready?
04:30Watch out.
04:30Whoa, whoa, whoa.
04:31Take it, man.
04:33We're getting power, which is a good thing.
04:35But the motor seems stuck.
04:37So we have to figure out what's wrong with it before we seriously damage it.
04:40This is what would hook to the foot switch.
04:43Okay.
04:44The foot switch is just, it's, it's tore up.
04:47We got to rebuild this.
04:48So let's see.
04:49All right.
04:49So that's coming here in detail.
04:50All right.
04:51Let's see.
04:52You ready?
04:53Pull that side up there, Kyle.
04:55Let's see the wheels spin.
05:02Nice.
05:03We're not doing burn outs, but that's pretty good.
05:05Okay.
05:05And then reverse.
05:06Let's just make sure.
05:09Very good.
05:11All right.
05:11Cool.
05:13That's as far as we need to go with that.
05:15It was touch and go there for a minute, but Rick's really going to be happy the motor still
05:19works after all these years.
05:20Now all we have to do is clean and tweak this bad boy.
05:23All right, Roy, why don't you give this to Brian so he can give that to the motor shop?
05:26He's there.
05:31Although this bimbo racer is really cool, I can't let my business be totally dependent
05:36on customers bringing in items.
05:38I sent my brother Ron and the boys out to California to check out a lead on some cool items.
05:43I think that's it right there up on the right.
05:45Dude, this one with the giant front gate?
05:48This is it.
05:49This is the address.
05:50Wow.
05:51Dude, what is this place?
05:55Welcome, welcome.
05:57How are you?
05:57Good, how are you?
05:58Good.
05:59Hey, Brett.
05:59Hey, I'm Ron.
06:00Nice to meet you.
06:01So I called Ron from Rick's Restorations to come down and check out a few of my items
06:04and possibly restore one of them, actually.
06:08So what is all this stuff?
06:10Rancho Los Lomas.
06:11We're actually a private resort and zoological garden.
06:14So we got a lot of cool animals.
06:15We got a lot of cool structures, buildings, everything else here.
06:18It's pretty neat.
06:1832 acres.
06:19And our pride and joy are tigers.
06:21Wow.
06:21What?
06:22Tigers?
06:22You want to come see them?
06:23Yeah.
06:24Let's go.
06:24You ready?
06:25Let's check them out.
06:25Don't you like tigers?
06:27No.
06:27I like dogs.
06:29Oh, come on.
06:29Don't be scared.
06:30I thought we were here to pick.
06:32Now Ron, Bretley, and this guy are taking me near dangerous tigers.
06:35I'm not stoked.
06:36All right.
06:37This is our boy Sumo.
06:38If you want.
06:39Sumo.
06:40You put your hand flat just like this.
06:42He'll lick you.
06:44Oh.
06:44Oh, yeah.
06:46No.
06:47Pretty wild.
06:47Pretty wild, huh?
06:49Come on, do it.
06:50You gotta try it.
06:50Wow.
06:50Dude, no way.
06:52Come on.
06:53Real quick.
06:53Come on, do it.
06:54One goes away.
06:55Once in a lifetime.
06:56Come on, dude.
06:57Oh.
06:58You know what?
06:59How about you look?
07:00Dude, these are my hands.
07:01There's only about 400 white tigers left in the world, guys.
07:04So do it.
07:05Do it.
07:06It's like sandpaper.
07:07Oh.
07:09Oh.
07:10Good job.
07:11Oh.
07:12Dude, if you have this here, I can't wait to see what else you have in the throat.
07:16Yeah.
07:16I mean, once in a lifetime chance.
07:18We've got our hands on the cages.
07:20Tigers are licking our palms.
07:21I mean, this is just awesome.
07:23I'm ready, you little chicken.
07:25So the customer wants sort of a tan upholstery.
07:28But it's very expensive leather.
07:29It's probably 500 bucks a hide.
07:31Holy cat scratch fever.
07:33This is kind of a surprise.
07:34I think you guys might be impressed with it.
07:36I'd love to see it restored.
07:38What is that?
07:40It's not a piano.
07:41What the?
07:52This is the barn.
07:53Store some of our old gear.
07:55I got a call from a guy that has some stuff for sale and a possible restoration item.
08:00So, Tyler, Brentley, and me are going to take a look at it.
08:03Well, she had a safe first.
08:05This thing has been in our family for about 50 years.
08:07I think it's late 1800s.
08:09What?
08:10This is a nice safe.
08:12Hey, it's at J-Bomb and Lock Company.
08:13That's pretty cool.
08:14J-Bomb and Lock Company made good safes, but they were more middle of the road.
08:19Not the fanciest, but this thing's over 100 years old and might be worth bidding on.
08:23Do you have the combination to it?
08:25I do.
08:25My mom won't give it to me, though.
08:27Ah, look.
08:27You took a good stuff in there.
08:30Smart woman.
08:30But it does work in open.
08:31It's just old and rustic.
08:33That's very, very cool.
08:34That's an old Cali Brothers slot machine.
08:37Man, does it work?
08:38It used to work when I was a child.
08:39Not anymore.
08:40These Cali Brothers machines are a great find.
08:43They're rare and one of the earliest slot machines ever manufactured.
08:47I'd really like to gift this item.
08:48I mean, it's cool because it rotates.
08:50I've never seen a slot machine that actually rotates on one.
08:53You know what I mean?
08:53Like, solid point.
08:55I don't know.
08:56Yeah, one cent.
08:57That's how you really know it's old.
08:59Let's see what it is.
09:00You played it and they gave you cigars.
09:02So you didn't get actual money.
09:03Yeah, so every time...
09:04You got cigars.
09:05Put a penny in.
09:05If you get a flush, you get three cigars.
09:07A royal flush, you get 25 cigars.
09:10Does this open up?
09:11Uh, your guess is as good as mine.
09:14It's like how the cards look.
09:15There you go.
09:16There she goes.
09:17There it is.
09:18Wow.
09:19Look how simple that is.
09:20That's pretty wild.
09:21This safe is fairly common and we can get a decent amount for it fully restored.
09:26But what I'm really excited about is this slot machine.
09:29So I'm going to see if I can get a deal by packaging them both together.
09:33All right, so I'm thinking for the both of them, I could probably give you probably two grand.
09:43Two grand total for everything?
09:45Mm-hmm.
09:46What about 2,500 for everything?
09:48Yeah, I would have to stop at two grand, unfortunately.
09:51Two grand?
09:52Mm-hmm.
09:53You know what?
09:54I'll, um, how about we pull out the safe and we'll do the slot machine for, uh, for 500.
10:01You know what?
10:02Does that work for you?
10:03That worked for me.
10:03Got a deal?
10:04Perfect.
10:05All right, well, let me, um, let me show you what I want to, uh, see if you guys can
10:09restore
10:10for me.
10:10Oh, yeah.
10:11Yeah, definitely.
10:11Cool.
10:12All right, follow me.
10:13I thought I could get a better price by packaging these together, but Brett didn't go for it.
10:17That's fine with me.
10:19$500 for this Cali machine is a smokin' deal.
10:27Hey, Kyle.
10:28Good morning.
10:29How's it going?
10:29Good morning.
10:30Hey, uh, we don't have a windshield.
10:32Right.
10:32Okay, so we gotta figure out how to make one, all right?
10:35We're cranking on this really cool bimbo racer.
10:37We got all the body work and paint done.
10:40And now we have a huge challenge ahead of us with a missing windshield.
10:43I was looking at some pictures of them.
10:45There's actually different types of windshields that I saw.
10:49Everybody had their own rendition because what happened is they were all missing.
10:52There was a couple of original ones there, though, that actually had a piece of rolled stock.
10:57Okay.
10:58And it was rolled right through here, you know?
11:00And it only went to here and to here.
11:02And then the plexiglass set in it, and it had a whole frame over it.
11:06The windshields on these racers were made in a few different styles.
11:10I like parts of each, so I'm gonna combine those elements to make my own.
11:14So, right now, I'm just building a template for the shape, okay?
11:19And then you're gonna match it with a bigger rod, with a half-inch rod instead of this quarter-inch
11:24rod.
11:24That looks good.
11:26All right, Kyle.
11:27You can have that.
11:28You can have that.
11:29Okay, and the body?
11:30Yeah, I'll take it.
11:31I gotta go to Charlie's and figure out the upholstery right now.
11:34You got plenty to do.
11:35This windshield was already gonna be a challenge if I had the body to work off of.
11:40Now, all I have is this metal rod as a template.
11:42Thanks, Rick.
11:43Don't strain yourself, Rick.
11:46Kyle can handle the windshield.
11:48It may be a little harder for him to make it without the body,
11:50but we've also got a big job in reconstructing the interior of this racer.
11:54So, I gotta let my upholsterer, Charlie, get his hands on the body
11:58so we can even have a chance to get this thing done on time.
12:01All right, so, it's a bimbo racer.
12:04And it's a Ferrari, actually.
12:06It's after a spider Ferrari.
12:08Wow.
12:08So, the customer wants sort of a tan upholstery.
12:11Is there a seat or do I gotta make it?
12:13No, you gotta make everything.
12:14There's nothing in it.
12:15I brought the steering wheel because that's sort of the tan we need to match.
12:18Okay.
12:19It's sort of a beige, basically.
12:20Yeah.
12:21Oh, it's gonna be beautiful.
12:22Yeah, yeah, it will be beautiful.
12:23That's a Ferrari.
12:24It's gotta be beautiful, right?
12:25Yeah.
12:26Oh, yeah.
12:26That one's dead on.
12:28That's dead on.
12:29But it's very expensive leather.
12:31It's probably 500 bucks a height.
12:33Holy cat scratch fever.
12:35If that's what it costs, that's what it costs.
12:37I gotta do it right.
12:38And then I like it where it has all the pleats.
12:41They have a bunch of pleats.
12:41They run all the way over the top.
12:43Okay.
12:43But it also, on all the door panels and everything, all the way into the front, those are also pleated.
12:48And the pleats run straight up and down.
12:50Okay.
12:50Okay?
12:51All right.
12:51I'm really excited to see this done.
12:53You know, I can't wait.
12:54So, I know you're the man, Charlie.
12:55Yep.
12:55So, thank you.
12:56I'm ready to start.
12:56Okay, bud.
12:57Thanks a lot.
12:57All right.
12:58See you later.
12:58This car may be mini, but it's gotta look like a real Italian job.
13:03I've trusted other projects with Charlie in the past, and I really hope we get this done
13:07on schedule.
13:08This is, uh, kind of a surprise.
13:10I think you guys might be impressed with it.
13:11Brett Lee, Tyler, and I are picking at this awesome ranch.
13:14We already got a sweet poker machine.
13:17Now, the owner's about to show us an item that he wants to get restored.
13:21Wow.
13:22No, it's good.
13:23If we get a pick and a restoration in one trip, bonus.
13:27It's a Nickelodeon.
13:28What?
13:29Yeah.
13:29Probably 1910s.
13:31Wow.
13:32This is cool.
13:33This is a player piano Nickelodeon, but they came in a lot of different styles.
13:37Some played music.
13:38Some showed movies.
13:39They're very collectible, and I can't wait to check this thing out.
13:43Put a nickel in one of these slots right here.
13:45Press their song.
13:46You have eight options.
13:48All of a sudden, the lights come on.
13:49The scroll starts moving, and then, you know, when it go over the hole or the bump on it,
13:54these things start moving.
13:55So the hole in the paper triggers the arms to move.
13:59Exactly.
13:59And that makes the noise.
14:00Yeah, exactly.
14:00I got it.
14:01Dude, that's some serious technology.
14:03Yeah, for back in the day.
14:04Back in the day.
14:05That's some engineering.
14:06I actually don't think we've ever done a Nickelodeon machine.
14:09I don't even think we've done a wood piano.
14:11How do you want it done?
14:12What do you see being done to it?
14:13I would just love to see it pop and shine and clean and working.
14:17A lot of wood damage, but it did work when I was a kid.
14:20I got to call my brother.
14:21I got to give him a shout and see what he has to say.
14:23Okay.
14:23So I'm the picker.
14:24I'm all right at that.
14:26But Rick gives the quotes on restorations.
14:28Now, something like this I've never seen before.
14:31I'm going to give my brother a call.
14:33Hey, what's up?
14:34Hey, we stopped off at a place to do some picking.
14:37He actually has this really badass piece that he wants restored that's been in his family
14:41forever.
14:42It's a Nickelodeon.
14:43All right.
14:45Well, so how bad?
14:47Is it complete?
14:48Is it always lifting?
14:49Is it wood?
14:50The wood is not lifting.
14:52The wood is actually not too bad.
14:54Okay.
14:54I believe he said it was working, you know, 15-something years ago.
14:59Coin up or no?
15:01Coin up, yeah.
15:01You put your nickel in, you press your selection, and then it starts rolling,
15:05starts doing its thing.
15:06It basically has keys.
15:07Is that correct?
15:09The scroll goes through.
15:10It senses each little dot on that scroll, sends the message up to, like you said, the keys.
15:15Those keys, you know, bounce back and forth, and that's what makes the noise.
15:19I'm definitely interested in working on it, but dang, I need to see it.
15:22Well, I mean, without me actually seeing it, it's only going off what you tell me.
15:26I'm between 15 and about 20 grand to totally go through it and make it all look brand new again
15:32and work correctly and take money and, you know, make all the wood pretty.
15:36So make sure you tell them all that, you know?
15:37Okay.
15:38All right.
15:39Thanks.
15:40Talking to Rick, I could describe it good enough to where he could kind of figure out what it was
15:44and give me a fairly good number so I could actually give this guy a quote.
15:48All right.
15:49So...
15:49What's the word?
15:51The word is to go through everything.
15:53Inside out.
15:54I mean, clean it, tune it, all the wood back to perfect.
15:58He was between 15 and 20,000 to get it completely done.
16:03He needs a little leeway just because, you know, he can't actually see it and touch it.
16:06So, you know, he's never done one.
16:10He would love to do it.
16:12Yeah, you know, I was looking online for these things and they don't go for more than 10.
16:17Yeah, I mean, I'm not forking up 15 or 20,000 to do this.
16:23Um, kind of a shame.
16:24It's a lot of money.
16:25Okay.
16:25Well, you know, it's a shame.
16:27It would have been an awesome project.
16:28Pleasure, guys.
16:29Thanks for coming.
16:30Appreciate it.
16:31Nice meeting you.
16:32Nice to meet you.
16:32Hey, see you guys.
16:34Sometimes a customer doesn't realize just how much work we put into it.
16:39Rick would have loved to have done it, but we're not going to lose money.
16:42When you're restoring your old metal projects, it's essential that you strip it all the way down to bare metal
16:48before it goes to paint.
16:49What's the worst thing you can do to a freshly stripped piece of iron or steel?
16:53A, expose it to heat.
16:56B, expose it to moisture.
16:58C, cover it.
17:00D, wrap it in plastic.
17:02The answer and more coming up next.
17:09What's the worst thing you can do to a freshly stripped piece of iron or steel?
17:14The correct answer is B, expose it to moisture.
17:17When metal is stripped, it becomes porous.
17:20So the worst thing you can do is let it get moist.
17:22This is an example of a piece that's been laid around and it got wet.
17:27You have to re-sandblast or strip it.
17:30In fact, if you live in an area that's high in humidity, don't strip or sandblast your metal until you're
17:35ready to paint.
17:36Because it's going to rust.
17:38Here, let's get this guy bolted in first.
17:41It's a good thing Kyle and Roy are finishing up the Ferrari bimbo assembly.
17:44Because the customer is anxious to come in and show the surprise to his wife.
17:49Out and boom.
17:52Nice.
17:52There it is.
17:54Good job.
18:03Hey.
18:04Hey Chad.
18:05Hey Rick, how are you?
18:06Good to see you.
18:08Good to see you.
18:08I brought my wife with me, Dorothy.
18:09Hi, Dorothy.
18:10Hi Rick, nice to meet you.
18:11Good to meet you.
18:11Good to meet you.
18:13I'm here at Rick's today to pick up the Ferrari bimbo racer I had restored.
18:17This is my wife's bimbo racer.
18:18When I brought this thing in, it was in pieces.
18:20I'm hoping Rick could fix everything and the parts that were missing and paint it up to where it looked
18:24like it brand new again.
18:25You know, this project that you brought in was so fun for the whole team to do and I can't
18:30wait to show it to you.
18:31I've got a friend, Matthew, who's going to bring it out.
18:33You want to see it?
18:34Yeah, bring it out.
18:35You ready?
18:35I'm ready.
18:36Hey Matthew, come on out.
18:41Oh my God.
18:43Oh, look at the headlights he wore.
18:45Look at that.
18:46Oh my God.
18:48That is so awesome.
18:53Oh my God.
18:55It's been about 40, probably almost 40 years since I've seen it.
18:59When I first saw my bimbo racer come out, I just wanted to cry.
19:02It was just so beautiful and it just brought back all kinds of childhood memories and I'm just thrilled that
19:07it's done.
19:08Oh my gosh, Rick.
19:09It's beautiful.
19:10Looks just like I did when I was a kid and I rode in it.
19:13Yeah?
19:14Oh my God.
19:14I can't believe you did this.
19:16Quite honestly, I don't know of any kid, they wouldn't love this thing.
19:19I mean, I could see this being your prized possession for a long time and to have it and then
19:23give it to your grandkids.
19:24That's awesome.
19:25I rode this for hours and hours and hours.
19:29Yeah.
19:29So it's just...
19:29Until the battery went dead.
19:31Exactly.
19:32Wore the tread right off the tires.
19:33Yeah.
19:34Everything about this car to me stands for everything our whole shop does and that's just nothing but, you know,
19:40excellence and perfection.
19:42And that's why we threw all our heart and soul into it.
19:45It's incredible.
19:45It's very important because this was a Ferrari.
19:48I went a little overboard because I haven't had a Ferrari in the shop yet.
19:51So I took it as being a big one.
19:53When it came in, you had it apart.
19:55The thing about it, this is done in fiberglass.
19:57It's got a lot of primer on it.
19:58It's got a lot of paint on it.
20:00It's got a lot of clear on it.
20:01It looks like a sheet of glass.
20:02It looks incredible.
20:02Yeah.
20:03The upholstery, I mean, all I had stuck in my head was Ferrari, Ferrari, Ferrari.
20:07I went over to the upholster.
20:09He whips out this batch of samples, you know, and I knew the color that you wanted.
20:14So we ended up matching the steering wheel to the leather on the interior.
20:17That's all leather.
20:18It's all tuck and roll.
20:20It's basically, you know, it's just like it would have been back in the day.
20:23And, of course, we put a little rug down on the bottom.
20:25Made it nice, you know.
20:26Yeah, Rick, you nailed it.
20:27It's incredible.
20:27Awesome.
20:28This thing right here, I wish you'd have had that.
20:31Making a windshield for this car was really, really hard.
20:34We actually had to fabricate these pieces.
20:37And as I looked online, there was three different styles.
20:40And I sort of picked and choose from the ones, and I fabricated this one on there.
20:43I wanted it to look and sit exactly like it did, so that's how we designed that.
20:47There's a ton of hours in that windshield.
20:50I'm actually speechless.
20:51It's just I don't even know what to say and how to thank both of you, actually.
20:55You give him a big hug.
21:00It brought back all kinds of memories, and I can't wait for our grandkids to be able to write in
21:04it.
21:04It's just words can't express how happy I am.
21:08Thank you very much, Rick.
21:10Thank you, Rick.
21:10Awesome.
21:11Let's go in the office here, and Kelly will write you up some paperwork, and then I'll help you load
21:15that up, okay?
21:16Okay, thank you.
