00:00Next on American Restoration.
00:02How's it feel working with something that was made
00:04the same year you were born?
00:05I'm tired of the old joke.
00:06You know, you're just a mouthy little punk.
00:08You want a challenge? You do that one.
00:10I'm gonna do this one faster than you.
00:12I came down to get both my old scooter
00:14and my mom's scooter restored.
00:16Tyler is already assembling his scooter.
00:18This thing's gonna go right down to the wire.
00:20How the hell could I be missing a spoke?
00:23I'm missing a spoke.
00:24You have any idea where it is?
00:26No.
00:27You are the worst liar.
00:29Look at your face.
00:30It's cheating.
00:31Remember back in the day
00:33when things were made by hand
00:35and people took pride in their work?
00:37My name's Rick Dale
00:39and I bring these things back to life.
00:41Every restoration has its own set of challenges.
00:45There's no owner's manual for what we do,
00:48but there's no job we can't handle.
00:59You can't do it.
01:00You can't do it.
01:01You can't do it.
01:02You can't do it.
01:03You can't do it.
01:04You can't do it.
01:05You can't do it.
01:06You can't do it.
01:07Yeah.
01:08This pile here needs to go to Alfonso's room.
01:09So get it all dispersed, okay?
01:10Customers.
01:11Let's go see what they got.
01:12Hi.
01:13How are you?
01:14Hi, I'm good.
01:15I'm John.
01:16John?
01:17I'm Rick.
01:18Good to meet you.
01:19Hi, Rick.
01:20Nice to meet you.
01:21This one is from the 1950s.
01:22This was my scooter that I used to ride on.
01:24Cool.
01:25They're family heirlooms,
01:26and it'll be nice to have them on display in the house.
01:29What's the story?
01:30I'm dying to know with these things.
01:31Okay.
01:32Back in the early 50s,
01:33my parents had this in the garage.
01:35This was my mom's scooter.
01:36Right.
01:37I would take it out.
01:38The problem was my friends would say,
01:39come on, where did you get this?
01:41They laughed at me a lot.
01:42So finally at Christmas time,
01:44there was this scooter,
01:46and I got on it immediately and went down the driveway
01:49and was up and down the street several times
01:51before I came back to the house.
01:52That's cool.
01:53The very, very beginning of scooters in the early 1900s,
01:57boys would take these roller skates, steel ones,
01:59and they'd screw them to the bottom of a board,
02:02and then off you go.
02:03Scooters have basically been the same for 100 years.
02:06The basic design hasn't changed a bit.
02:09So how do you want to do them?
02:10Well, let's do them totally original,
02:12and it'll be a really nice tribute to my mom.
02:15Okay.
02:16This one here,
02:17the spokes are probably going to be the hardest
02:19because they break.
02:20And if I break these,
02:22I'm messed up.
02:23Finding some rubber like this
02:24can be real hard, too.
02:25I'll do the new one.
02:26All right.
02:27Your turn.
02:28So we're going to have to take the whole thing apart.
02:30The handlebars are coming off.
02:31Sandblast it.
02:32Take all this paint off.
02:34Trace all this artwork so we can keep the original artwork.
02:36I mean, it's really quite simple.
02:38As far as price,
02:41what are we looking at, do you think?
02:42This one here,
02:43where I'm looking at 1,500,
02:45and then to do the work on that one,
02:47that's going to be a little less.
02:48So that one's going to be 500.
02:50So a total of 2,000.
02:55I was expecting it maybe to be a little less,
02:57but to have it on display in the house,
02:59it's certainly worth it.
03:00All right.
03:01Awesome.
03:02Awesome, awesome.
03:03Thank you so much.
03:04Okay.
03:05Let's go in the office,
03:06and Tyler will get those put in line.
03:07Right, Ty?
03:08You got to take them in?
03:09Yeah, you're too old to carry them anyways.
03:10My ass.
03:11After what Rick has said in terms of what he's going to do
03:13for both of the scooters,
03:14I can't wait to come back and see them
03:16in their original condition.
03:19Oh, that's shady acres.
03:25All right.
03:26You need help?
03:27No?
03:28I can do it.
03:29Unlike you.
03:30Can't even carry them.
03:31You know what?
03:32I'm tired of the old jokes, okay?
03:33I'm not old.
03:34You know what won't get old?
03:35The old jokes.
03:36You're not going to get any older.
03:37That was funny.
03:38You know, you're just a mouthy little punk.
03:39Do both these scooters before you even think about doing them.
03:42Is that a challenge?
03:43You want a challenge?
03:44You do that one.
03:45That's good and easy for you.
03:46And this one is a monster.
03:47And I'm going to do this one faster than you.
03:49All the way through, start to finish.
03:51But you got to make sure that it's totally correct at the end.
03:53Okay.
03:54And no corners are cut.
03:55Is that it?
03:56If I win, you can stop calling me old.
03:57I thought he needed help.
03:58Well, instead, he mouths off.
03:59And now he's got a challenge on his hand.
04:02A challenge against me.
04:03Good luck.
04:04Huh?
04:05Yeah?
04:06My dad bet me that I couldn't get the 50s scooter restored faster than he could get the
04:1020s scooter restored.
04:11But the 20s scooter's harder, so I pretty much already have a head start.
04:15How's it feel working with something that was made the same year you were born?
04:19Smart ass.
04:20I'm done over here.
04:22You're done?
04:23I got my whole thing torn apart before my dad even got, like, the first wheel off.
04:32I'm taking my stuff to sandblasting, which means I'm ahead of you in the line.
04:38Have a nice day.
04:39He's going to take that to get sandblast, and he's not going to have Ted copy the art,
04:44and he's going to forget.
04:45I need that one.
04:46Okay.
04:47And that one there.
04:48Who's this?
04:49It's like an undercover man.
04:50Hey, guys.
04:51Good to see you again, buddy.
04:52Howdy.
04:53How you been?
04:54Norm collects candy vending machines, and we've done a few jobs for him in the past.
05:09Oh, man.
05:10There it is.
05:12BP customers are extremely important to my business.
05:15It's more or less proof that they're happy with the job.
05:17And maybe they'll spread the word, and I'll get some more work.
05:20I want you to see something here that I found.
05:22Cool.
05:23This thing is rough, but I know that you could turn this into something beautiful.
05:27I'll take that piece for you.
05:28I know that some of the parts are missing, so it's going to be a hard candy machine to work on.
05:33That's very cool.
05:34Where'd you find this one?
05:35I found this one on the Internet.
05:37Oh, yeah?
05:38This thing here was in a lot of places.
05:39They're in, like, stores, train stations.
05:41Right.
05:42It's probably 40s.
05:43And the coolest thing about the machine is you could have 170 different brands in it.
05:47Sure.
05:48You know?
05:49Like, turn and turn and turn until you see what you want.
05:50Right.
05:51This had actually a mechanism inside that's capable of holding just a ton of candy.
05:54It rotates in a big conveyor belt.
05:56Wow.
05:57What you did was you put the money in here, and then you twisted it to your selection,
06:02pressed the handle down, and then this door opened and allowed the candy to come back
06:07out.
06:08But there's no press-down handle.
06:09I'm going to have to think about how to make that.
06:11Right.
06:12And then, you know, there's a couple of big parts missing.
06:16The inside rack is fairly large, and it's fairly heavy.
06:20Well, could you find me one?
06:21Uh, I don't know.
06:22I don't know if we're going to find one all by itself or find one in a machine.
06:26In a machine.
06:27I'll have to go research.
06:28Yeah.
06:29Yeah, get some.
06:30Also, these came two different ways.
06:31Wall-mounted, and they also had bases.
06:33Did you fabricate a base for me?
06:35I think we're going to be fabricating or finding a lot of parts.
06:38Yeah.
06:39I've worked on these machines before, but all I've got to work with right now is basically
06:44a shell.
06:45Finding this mechanism is going to be tough, but sometimes that's part of the job.
06:49Okay.
06:50We'll get the rest of it taken apart, which isn't going to take very long.
06:53And then we'll get it blasted.
06:55While that's going on, I need you to go try to find a mech.
06:58I think the main cost that you're going to have is going to be in the mechanism itself
07:02and fabricating the bottom pieces.
07:04All that together for me to make it like that and working and everything, um, I'm looking at
07:09$1800 to do the whole piece.
07:10Wow.
07:11Yeah.
07:12It is a nice machine.
07:14It is very, very collectible.
07:15So you're not getting too hurt if you didn't pay too much for it.
07:18No, I didn't.
07:19I only paid $100, so.
07:21Oh, well, that's not bad.
07:22Uh, I'm okay with that.
07:26Okay?
07:27Yep.
07:28You all right?
07:29All right.
07:30Awesome.
07:31Awesome.
07:33This is going to look killer.
07:34We'll go in the office, and then you're going to need to try to find some parts.
07:36All right.
07:37Oh, crap.
07:38My dad and I are having a head-to-head challenge.
07:41He hasn't even started sandblasting the rims or fixing the spokes yet.
07:44So at this point, I'm seriously kicking his butt right now.
07:47This candy machine was basically missing everything when it rolled in here.
07:51So if we can't find it, we're going to have to fabricate it.
07:55It's too sharp.
07:57Back to the drawing board.
07:58Why'd you bring all those tools?
08:11Because we're doing a teardown.
08:12Yeah, but when the guy brought it in, it was pretty much already torn down.
08:16I told you.
08:17It is pretty much torn out.
08:18No tools necessary.
08:19It is pretty much torn out.
08:20We got in this old U-Select vending machine, and this thing's missing a ton of parts.
08:25It's basically a shell, so we've got to fill in all the empty spaces.
08:28While Ron's out scouting for parts, Bretley and I are going to tear the rest of this machine
08:32apart, which I think is going to take a whole five seconds.
08:35Is that it or what?
08:36Yeah, nothing else comes off.
08:37Dude, that's got to be the quickest teardown I think we've ever done.
08:55We're restoring a pair of vintage scooters, and my dad and I are having a head-to-head challenge
08:59to see who can restore theirs first without cutting any corners.
09:03Technically, I was supposed to be doing this on my own, but the 50s scooter I'm working
09:07on is made of pressed metal, and it needs quite a bit of body work.
09:11So I used my photo friend, and Phil's helped me straighten out the frame.
09:15Yeah, that looks good, huh?
09:16Yeah.
09:17Meanwhile, my dad is sanding down the wood and filling in the cracks on his 1920s scooter.
09:24He hasn't even started sandblasting the rims or fixing the spokes yet, so at this point,
09:28I'm seriously kicking his butt right now.
09:32We need to make a base for the U-Select candy machine so that it can stand on its own.
09:45So Dave's fabricating one from steel that'll match the same style and shape of the main
09:50unit.
09:51How we doing?
09:53Good, good.
09:54That's looking good.
09:55Not bad.
09:56That's perfect.
09:57All right.
09:58Now, the next thing on the candy machine, it drops the candy into, like, this little box,
10:05little chute.
10:06And then you grab it, and it's right there, and you can also see through it.
10:09Okay.
10:10You see that thing there?
10:11The hole right there?
10:12Yeah.
10:13This is that hole right here.
10:14Okay.
10:15You'll have the little piece of stainless here, and then this has to be dipped in.
10:17Right.
10:18Okay?
10:19That's gonna be hard.
10:20This candy machine was basically missing everything when it rolled in here.
10:23So if we can't find it, we're gonna have to fabricate it.
10:26I need you to just go ahead and make it, and then we're gonna have to try it.
10:29We're just gonna have to try it as we go.
10:30Yeah.
10:31The customer wants this to look all original.
10:34So that means even the smallest details, like the edges on this drop tray, have to be
10:39just like they were back in the day.
10:41No exceptions.
10:50Hey, Ted.
10:51What's up?
10:52Hey, Tyler.
10:53How are you?
10:54Good.
10:55I need you to help me with this scooter.
10:56What are we doing?
10:57I need you to paint it for me.
10:58Paint it for me?
10:59Why don't you paint it?
11:00If there's one thing I've learned being a shop foreman, it's why do the work yourself
11:03when you're gonna have somebody else do it.
11:04So if I can avoid doing the work and beat my dad, it's a win-win.
11:08Okay.
11:09What do we got?
11:10It's a 1950s scooter.
11:11I'm gonna need this red, this red, and these two little pieces, the break and the kickstand
11:17red.
11:18Did you have any artwork, you know, anything like that on there?
11:20Yeah, there was like a little, I don't know, white logo thing on there.
11:23Where is it?
11:24What happened to it?
11:25Well, it's gone now.
11:26We did all the body work.
11:27Well, you didn't give me a chance to look at it or take pictures of it or trace it or
11:30anything.
11:31How do you expect me to make a new one?
11:32Dude, I don't know if I'm gonna be able to recreate that.
11:35I can't believe I totally forgot about the artwork.
11:38If Ted can't find this online, my dad's gonna kill me.
11:41I mean, all I can do is try.
11:42Yeah.
11:43It's gonna take a while, so if you're in a hurry, you're gonna have to...
11:46I can wait if you can do this and not tell my dad I forgot.
11:50Okay.
11:51All right.
11:52But you owe me.
11:53I know.
11:54You owe me big time for that.
11:55All right, Ted.
11:56Tyler didn't give me a chance to trace the artwork off of the 1950 scooter before he sandblasted
12:09it.
12:10So I had to do this the hard way.
12:11I had to find the correct artwork from the period before I could create the stencils, and
12:15that ate up a lot of time.
12:17One, two, three, four, five, top, okay.
12:26Tyler's lucky he's not doing this one.
12:28He'd confuse the out of him.
12:30He's confusing me right now.
12:33Re-spoking rims is always tricky.
12:36Do I got it upside down?
12:39Whether it's either a motorcycle or a scooter, the spokes weave together in a specific pattern
12:44to hold up the rim.
12:46I took photos so I could see how all the spokes lined up.
12:49But even then, it's still a lot of frustrating trial and error to get these back to their
12:54original position.
12:55Where's the bag?
12:57How the hell could I be missing a spoke?
13:00Just when I thought nothing could get any worse than this, I misplaced one of the spokes.
13:05Where's the bag?
13:12I gotta go find that spoke.
13:15Tyler, what are you doing sitting on my desk?
13:18I'm working.
13:19I'm missing a spoke on my 1920s scooter.
13:23Okay.
13:26You have any idea where it is?
13:28I mean it.
13:29I know they were all there.
13:30Do you have any idea where that went?
13:32No.
13:33You positive?
13:34No.
13:35Tyler, you are the worst liar.
13:37You look at your face.
13:38So why would you slow me down like that?
13:41Well, I had to level the playing field somehow and I kept it in my pocket.
13:44I didn't lose it.
13:45Give me that.
13:46You should start working on your scooter because you're a little behind.
13:49Tyler, I won't get even, but you know what?
13:52It's ridiculous that you even tried.
13:54Ridiculous.
13:55Because there's no way you're gonna beat me.
13:57I'm still gonna beat you.
13:58I'll stop working on it for a whole day and I'll still beat you.
14:00I'm still gonna win, Ty.
14:02Unbelievable.
14:03We've had a heck of a time getting this Uselectic candy machine back into its original working order.
14:22Ron scoured the entire state of Nevada for the mechanism that fits inside.
14:27And Kyle and Fonzie got the mech working exactly like it's supposed to.
14:31There we go.
14:32Now it's just a matter of getting all these pieces back together again and we should be good to go when the customer gets here.
14:38Hey, Rick.
14:39Hey, Norm.
14:40How's it going, man?
14:41How you been?
14:42How you been, buddy?
14:43All right.
14:44Good to see you.
14:45I'm here for that candy machine.
14:46Here to see the candy machine.
14:47Let's go inside and get out this weather.
14:48Yeah, absolutely.
14:49I came back to Rick's.
14:50Pick up my 1940s Uselect candy machine.
14:51Okay.
14:52It's in here.
14:53Hold on.
14:54Wait right there.
14:55Okay, wait right here.
14:56I'm excited.
14:57Yeah, okay.
14:58I know for sure you're gonna love this.
14:59Listen, you're gonna, this is gonna hit your sweet tooth.
15:00I tell you right now, you're gonna love this.
15:01I'm excited.
15:02It sparkles.
15:03It shines.
15:04It's like, it just says, come eat me.
15:05Okay, you ready?
15:06I'm ready.
15:07All right, okay.
15:08I want you to wait right here.
15:09I'm excited to see the machine.
15:10It was missing a lot of parts and I just hope he could pull it off.
15:12Yeah, I'm excited.
15:13It's in here.
15:14Hold on.
15:15Wait right there.
15:16Okay, wait right here.
15:17I'm excited.
15:18I know for sure you're gonna love this.
15:19This is gonna hit your sweet tooth.
15:20I tell you right now, you're gonna love this.
15:21I'm excited.
15:22It sparkles, it shines.
15:23I'm excited to see the machine.
15:24It was missing a lot of parts and I just hope he could pull it off.
15:28Here we go.
15:29Man, it is tall.
15:30It's a tower.
15:31Yeah.
15:32All right, you ready?
15:33Come roll, man.
15:34Here we go, here we go.
15:35One, two, three.
15:36Wow.
15:37What do you think?
15:38Oh, my God.
15:39What do you think of that color?
15:40Wow, I love it.
15:41It jumps right out at you.
15:42This is gorgeous.
15:43When I first saw my machine today, I was thoroughly impressed with how it looked.
15:52I mean, it was just perfect.
15:54All right, so, Rick, how did you do this?
15:56Well, if you remember, I mean, it was, it had some stuff missing.
15:59It's just sort of a shell.
16:00What we did is we found a Mac.
16:02Ron is infamous for finding stuff.
16:04The other parts I could not find.
16:06Um, this piece here, we couldn't find.
16:08This piece here, we couldn't find.
16:09This is all handmade.
16:10Dave actually took a piece of flat steel and made this into this.
16:14And there's these corners been all welded together.
16:16It's stainless steel.
16:17Gorgeous.
16:18We also made this base.
16:19We actually rolled the metal.
16:20Awesome job.
16:21Now, this handle, was this always here?
16:23Yeah.
16:24You know, basically, Norman, you gave me a shell.
16:26I did, did I?
16:27So I had all these little parts to find and make.
16:29This piece here, we handmade.
16:30And this piece here was on the mechanism.
16:32Right.
16:33This is the turning mix.
16:34And what happens, see how it turns?
16:35Aw.
16:36It's basically a conveyor belt.
16:37I love the color.
16:38Do you?
16:39It looks like the 57 Chevy.
16:40There you go.
16:41That's the color.
16:42Do you have a diamond?
16:43Try it.
16:44I want to, I want to test this out.
16:45Yeah, I got a diamond.
16:46Here's that.
16:47Okay.
16:48Here we go.
16:49Select the candy.
16:50Okay.
16:51I'm going to pick this one right here.
16:53Awesome.
16:54Awesome.
16:55Good work.
16:56A natural high.
16:57Natural high.
16:58The healthy way.
16:59That's good stuff.
17:00My employees are going to be very excited to see this.
17:01This is going to be a great conversation piece.
17:03Thank you, Rick.
17:04Cool.
17:05You bet.
17:06Okay.
17:08So you ready?
17:09I'm ready.
17:10All right.
17:11I got you going.
17:12Let's go.
17:13Let's go, Ty.
17:14There you go.
17:15Oh, my God.
17:16You actually had the guys work on it, not you.
17:18Yeah, but that's not the point.
17:19I won.
17:20No, you didn't win.
17:21I obviously got mine done first.
17:33The 1920s scooter is almost ready to go.
17:44I did all the work, and all I got left to do is assemble it.
17:48Hey, Rick.
17:49How's your scooter coming?
17:50I'm jamming right along, bud.
17:51So I take it you don't need no help?
17:53No, I'm good, man.
17:54I'm almost done.
17:55Cool.
17:56Thank you, though.
17:57I'll be out back if you need me.
17:58Okay, buddy.
17:59Tyler is already assembling his 1950s scooter, and it looks like this thing's going to go
18:03right down to the wire, and we're just going to have to see who finishes first.
18:06Hey, Tyler.
18:07What?
18:08You need some help?
18:09Of course I need some help.
18:10I just got started.
18:12Well, ask your dad if you want help.
18:13I guess he don't need no help.
18:14He thinks he's that good.
18:15He doesn't need any help.
18:16There we go.
18:25Good fit there.
18:26There we go.
18:28All right.
18:29Nice.
18:30That's it.
18:31I think you're ready to roll, buddy.
18:33All righty, Kyle.
18:34You kick at Tyler's ass every time.
18:36I'm totally beating my dad.
18:43Hi, Rick.
18:44Hey.
18:45It's John.
18:46I've come to Rick's Restorations today to pick up my two scooters.
18:49The one I used to ride in the 1950s, and my mom's scooter from the 1920s.
18:54So you ready?
18:55I'm ready.
18:56All right.
18:57Let's go.
18:58It's over here.
18:59I think most of us want to remember things from our childhood that are very important and
19:02bring back such fond memories.
19:04So it's going to be really interesting to see how they both came out.
19:07Okay.
19:08I want you to stand right there by that door.
19:09All right?
19:10Okay.
19:11All right.
19:12I'm ready.
19:13Tyler, you ready?
19:14Yeah.
19:15All right.
19:16Let's go, Ty.
19:18All right.
19:19Right out here.
19:20There.
19:21There you go.
19:22Oh, my God.
19:23Look at those scooters.
19:25Oh.
19:26Look at this thing.
19:27Is that bad?
19:28Oh, wow.
19:29That is gorgeous.
19:31When I first laid eyes on those scooters, I was just so excited to see them look as original
19:36as they could be with all the fine detail on both.
19:39They just look fantastic.
19:41You know, when you think about it, Rick, this must have been an awesome toy for a child back
19:45in the 1920s.
19:46Quite honestly, back in the 20s, there was only little toy trucks that you played with.
19:51This was a toy of all toys for a kid.
19:53Yeah.
19:54I mean, I'd rather ride one of the old ones than I would be riding one of the new ones.
19:57Yeah.
19:58Try to hop on that.
19:59See what happens.
20:01The detail.
20:02You've just done a wonderful job.
20:04Just gorgeous.
20:05Yeah.
20:06Hey, Tyler, you noticing that he's looking at mine before he's looking at...
20:08Get to the point.
20:09All right.
20:10All right.
20:11We have this little inside thing going on.
20:12That's great.
20:13A little competition.
20:14A little competition.
20:15I restored this one, and this is what we did.
20:17I took it apart.
20:18I sandblasted everything.
20:19Did all the body work.
20:20Got it all primed out.
20:21And then I painted it this burgundy, and then did the pinstripe.
20:24The wheels are even pinstripe.
20:25Yeah.
20:26I've never seen this.
20:27Yeah.
20:28Wow, that is so cool.
20:29Yeah.
20:30On this piece of wood, it's the original piece of wood on there.
20:31I just sanded it out, and then I stained it.
20:33Absolutely gorgeous.
20:35Mine wasn't nearly as complicated as I had the solid wheels.
20:39The only pieces that came off were the kickstand, the wheels, and then the front, and the handlebars.
20:44So Ted had to paint the whole thing red.
20:46I mean, this looks just like it was originally.
20:48He stenciled on this artwork.
20:49He shot the white, and you're not going to have to worry about it fading or anything like that,
20:53because it's all covered in one clear coat.
20:55Really nice.
20:56Both of you, you've just done a wonderful job.
20:59Thank you again, Rick.
21:01Tyler, thank you so much.
21:02It's just incredible.
21:03Hey.
21:04Hey, babe.
21:05What's up?
21:06Am I interrupting?
21:07No, no, no, it's okay.
21:08We're just getting wrapped up here.
21:09Okay.
21:10Can you take John up front and do the paperwork that you do?
21:12Sure.
21:13Absolutely.
21:14Okay, let's go.
21:15Okay.
21:16Thanks, babe.
21:17So what are you going to give me?
21:18I won.
21:19No, you didn't win.
21:20What are you talking about?
21:21What do you mean you win?
21:22How the heck did you get the artwork on the front of that?
21:23What do you mean?
21:24Because you blasted it before Ted even got to trace it.
21:26And what's your point?
21:27That you actually had the guys work on it, not you.
21:30Yeah, but that's not the point.
21:31I mean, you even sabotaged me by stealing a spoke.
21:34That's bull crap.
21:35It's a competitive advantage.
21:36I won.
21:37No, you didn't win.
21:38I obviously got mine done first.
21:40But why are you getting so technical about it?
21:42You did a good job, I mean, for doing all that yourself.
21:44I mean, it's not that bad.
21:46Yeah, well, yours isn't that bad either.
21:48Looks good.
21:49Good job.
21:52Get to work.
