00:00Okay, let's do some picking.
00:02There's probably over 10,000 items that we have acquired over 40 years.
00:06Oh, this is cool.
00:08That's a part of an airplane.
00:11This, to me, isn't just any motor.
00:13This is an important piece of American aviation and motorcycle history.
00:18Well, is this something that you consider selling?
00:20Let me think about it.
00:23Oh, two beautiful items of Vincent and a Jaguar.
00:28Love the hood on these things, man.
00:30Wow, this is Dave's lifestyle of the rich and famous, man.
00:33He's got two of the raddest things on the planet in his garage.
00:37Mike, I am for sale.
00:38Oh, yeah?
00:39It scares the crap out of the grandkids.
00:41I bet.
00:42Every pick I'm on, my main goal is to find things that are very unusual for the store.
00:47Let's see.
00:47My second goal is to find things that look like Frank.
00:50There's a similarity there.
00:52I'm Mike Wolf, and I'm Frank Frest.
00:55And we're pickers.
00:57We travel the back roads of America looking to buy rusty gold.
01:02We make a living telling the history of America one piece at a time.
01:14Frank and I are picking West Virginia.
01:17We've never been here.
01:18It's beautiful.
01:19And now we're waiting for the call from Danielle with the lead.
01:21All right, Frankie, we're in the Appalachians.
01:24Last time we were in the South, you were Frankie Bobby.
01:26I was Mikey Ray.
01:27But now I'm thinking you should be one word.
01:31Booger.
01:32What's up, booger?
01:35Guess who?
01:37Hey, what's up, girl?
01:38How you doing?
01:39Doing good, man.
01:40Me and Frankie are rocking.
01:41What about you?
01:42I was just calling to kind of update you about what's going on here in Nashville.
01:46We decided as a crew to open a second store in Nashville.
01:49We sent Dani down.
01:50She found a really cool space.
01:52This is it, guys.
01:54Wow.
01:55Me and Frankie went down, fell in love with it, and signed the lease.
01:58We'll take it.
01:59All right.
02:00Okay.
02:02Hey, did you find anybody down in Nash yet?
02:04Actually, I have interviews set up for tomorrow.
02:06Danielle's down in Nashville looking for a manager down there, somebody that can run the store.
02:10Don't be hiring no guys because they're cute looking or something.
02:13They're tight jeans.
02:14Yeah.
02:15Okay, you do realize I'm not going to listen to anything you say right now, right?
02:18You got any leads?
02:19Check this out.
02:20I'm sending you to the Perry's.
02:22This couple, Mike and Henriela.
02:24They actually have like an Appalachian museum.
02:26I'm going to give you a peek into the world of Appalachian lifestyle.
02:29Okay.
02:29He's been collecting for a long time, like 50 years.
02:32So I think he just wants to kind of lighten the load a little bit.
02:35All right, girl, we're on it.
02:36It sounds pretty cool.
02:37Awesome.
02:38All right, signing out.
02:39All right.
02:41This place sounds great.
02:42I can't wait to see it.
02:43Dude, these roads are crazy.
02:45The question is, will we get there alive?
02:47How's it looking over there, huh?
02:49Am I close enough on the side?
02:50Yeah.
02:51Am I close enough?
02:51You can't scare me, man.
02:52Well, I'm at Wally.
02:53How's it feeling with that now?
02:58All right.
02:58Look at this.
02:59Oh, yeah, this looks cool.
03:00Oh, yeah, this is it.
03:00Uh-huh.
03:01Oh, look at that.
03:02Look at that.
03:02Oh, yeah.
03:03Wow.
03:03Oh, this reminds me like Pioneer Village, back where we live.
03:06What's his name again?
03:08Mike.
03:09You know how I remember that?
03:10Because that's your name?
03:11Same name as me.
03:12And you are on top of it.
03:13What would I do without you?
03:15Come on, Booger.
03:15All right.
03:20This place is like Little House on the Prairie, Appalachia style.
03:24Hey, are you Henriela?
03:25Hi, I'm Henriela.
03:26Hey, I'm Mike.
03:26Hi, I'm Henriela.
03:28You too.
03:28Who's the boss?
03:32It's worked for 53 years.
03:3453, huh?
03:3553 marvelous years.
03:37That's awesome.
03:37Mike met Henriela in fifth grade, and all through school, he chased her, and finally, they landed
03:44at the altar.
03:44How long have you been doing this?
03:46Well, none of this existed 15 years ago.
03:49This has all been a figment of our creative imagination to try to preserve our Appalachian
03:54heritage.
03:55We moved out here in 1973, and we would fill up a building, and then we'd build a new
04:01one, and fill it up, and build a new one.
04:03And 30 years, 30 buildings later, that's the Heritage Farm Museum and Village.
04:08Can you tell us why you're interested in selling a few things?
04:11I won't tell you her age, but I'm 75.
04:14And it's come to the realization that you're not going to be able to do everything in life
04:18that you dreamed about doing.
04:19So we've been collecting for 40 years.
04:21We've never sold a single thing.
04:23I'm looking around at all these buildings, thinking about all the amazing things that
04:27could possibly be in them.
04:29These were the early mountain men and explorers, and they came over the mountains, and they
04:33would have trapped the various animals.
04:35This is replica of a log cabin that they would have built.
04:38Now we've got electricity.
04:40The world is forever changed.
04:41Not only did these guys have Appalachian-made stuff, but they also had a wide variety of Americana
04:46made early last century.
04:48This is just something to show the children that there was a time that actually things were
04:52repaired and fixed.
04:54So, Mike, how did you acquire all this stuff here?
04:56I mean, did you buy it all?
04:57Yeah.
04:5999.9 we bought.
05:00Okay.
05:01On Saturdays.
05:02Together.
05:03Going to junkin' together.
05:04Yeah.
05:04That's what we like to do.
05:05Go and rummage through things and pick.
05:09This is called a Zillik Room.
05:11It's really tough because this stuff's NFS, and that's not for sale in our book.
05:16But Mike and Henriella have this huge building sold with all the stuff that they bought over
05:20the years that never made it into the display.
05:23This is a storage catch-all.
05:26Oh, this is cool.
05:27Woo!
05:28As soon as I see this place, I was like in heaven.
05:30Okay, let's do some pickin'.
05:39Okay, this is it.
05:40It's dark, it's dirty, there's piles of stuff.
05:43This is the reason we came to West Virginia.
05:51There's probably over 10,000 items that we have acquired over only some years.
05:56Hey, Mike, what about the old skeet thrower?
05:59It's an old piece, it's cast iron.
06:00A skeet machine is designed to throw a clay pigeon, gives the shooter a chance to hit it.
06:06It's kind of cool, it's not broken, I mean, it's got a nice spring on it.
06:10Skeet machines always have one of the legs broke off.
06:13They just tighten them down too much, they snap them.
06:15This one's not broken, it's intact.
06:17But when it said Remington on it, I was like, that's the money.
06:29What are you thinking on something like this?
06:31A hundred and a half.
06:32Ooh, that'd be a little bit more than I'd want to pay on that.
06:36I was thinking more about 65 bucks.
06:41It's a whole lot more fun to buy than it is to sell.
06:46Any kind of hunting enthusiast, any kind of hunting lodge, would love to have this item.
06:52Oh, 90 bucks.
06:5575.
06:5780.
06:58You got to do it.
06:59When he said 80, I said, oh.
07:03What's five hours between the fronts?
07:04For frames.
07:05That's right.
07:06Dude, what's this?
07:06This is cool.
07:07That's an electric peacock.
07:09Well, is the electric peacock something you'd sell?
07:11Well, I'd have to check with the lady.
07:12Yes.
07:13This would have been something in a store, in the window, to attract someone's attention.
07:18That's exactly what this piece has done for me.
07:20That'll look cool, though, once it's passed.
07:22Once it fans out.
07:23They never lose their colors.
07:25See, imagine that, Frankie.
07:26Every morning, as a picker, I wake up, I want to buy something I've never seen before.
07:30Let's plug it in and see if he works.
07:32Plug it in.
07:32I'm holding it in my hands right now.
07:34Who's going to get shocked?
07:36Does it have an arm button?
07:37Yeah, that's it.
07:38Hold up.
07:39Give it a couple seconds.
07:40There it goes.
07:40Yeah, it works.
07:41They got to go open slow.
07:43There's these feathers, pieces of feathers that used to rotate.
07:47Heck yeah, it works fine.
07:48Pick in 101, weird, funky, different cells.
07:51And then I also saw this piece of glass.
07:54I'm going to go Frankie on these guys.
07:56I'm going to do a bundle situation.
07:58Do you have the whole machine to this, or do you just have this piece of glass?
08:04That's a part of a shuffleboard.
08:07They broke the rest of it, and that's all I have left.
08:10This is all that's left?
08:10Yeah.
08:11This is a very cool piece.
08:12It's got lots of color, really cool graphics, awesome subject matter.
08:16So for the electric peacock and the back plate here, what are you thinking on these two pieces?
08:23Oh, just make me an offer.
08:25How about 75 bucks?
08:32You got it.
08:33You got it?
08:34Good deal.
08:41How about other phones?
08:43I need to keep one, but I can sell two of them.
08:46These public telephone signs.
08:47They're flange signs.
08:48They're kind of common, but people still buy them.
08:50People love them.
09:00What would you have to have for both of them?
09:03Uh, I think, uh, oh, 150 bucks.
09:08That one's not going to clean up, though.
09:10That's, that's in forever.
09:12Right there.
09:14How about 125 on two of them?
09:16This one's never going to clean.
09:17I can tell his wife's, like, giving him the elbow shot, going, hey, get rid of these.
09:22It'll be fine.
09:22Okay, cool.
09:23We'll take those two.
09:24And she's pitting me in the back saying, sell, sell, sell.
09:27I love it.
09:27You know, I think Henrietta's the boss here.
09:30She's the one that wants to sell.
09:40I like this.
09:42That's a saw base.
09:43That's a saw base.
09:44This piece is an early jigsaw.
09:47The legs are beautiful.
09:49They're rusty.
09:50It shows its age.
09:51It's got personality.
09:52It's got detail.
09:53I mean, you know, who today would make that kind of, uh, especially for underneath the machine where you would
09:59never see it, right?
10:00You'd never see this.
10:01It's incredible.
10:02I would use it as a table.
10:04You know, forget the saw.
10:05It's a table.
10:06Yeah.
10:06I'm thinking Kitchen Island.
10:08I'm thinking New York City loft.
10:10I'm thinking TV stand.
10:12Whatever it is, this is the kind of piece that can define a room.
10:16Well, is this something that you consider selling?
10:17Well, that was a gift.
10:19So, I wouldn't, I wouldn't, uh, if this is.
10:22I'd have to check with somebody.
10:24He's like, well, you know, my friend's kind of, you know, I don't know.
10:27Let me throw you an offer out there and, and to see if you can check with him.
10:30I'd pay, uh, $500 for it.
10:35Joe would understand.
10:37Joe would understand.
10:38All right, okay, $500.
10:38He would find a good home.
10:40I don't think she cried in the least to see that one go.
10:42It's the elbow that I got to worry about from her.
10:45My, my ribs still hurt.
10:47The cool thing about Mike and Henriela's collection was they bought things that they found attractive.
10:52It was random.
10:53It was from A to Z.
10:55As a picker, that's the kind of place I want to go through.
10:58Two old fans.
10:59$50 a piece.
11:00That's what I was thinking.
11:03She's, she's, she's, she's always right.
11:05I was quite happy to move him on.
11:08What would you have to have for this?
11:09$25.
11:11Good deal.
11:12$60.
11:14How about $80?
11:15All right.
11:16It's good.
11:16Yeah.
11:16All right.
11:17Thank you so much.
11:18Someday I was going to think I'd put in an elevator, but.
11:22What's this motor?
11:23Oh, that's a part of an airplane.
11:25This is a beautiful motor.
11:26This is the kind of stuff that you never find anymore.
11:29Was this something that you consider selling?
11:32Well, I'd probably consider it, but.
11:34About $500.
11:36That would sure make a fellow think about it.
11:38Look at this.
11:39Pull over right here.
11:40See, guys, got some triumphs over here.
11:42So you got the wizard.
11:42I start salivating.
11:44Frank and I could drive all over the country and not see this many car parts and motorcycle parts in
11:49one place.
11:57This place had everything.
11:59It was like Picker's Christmas.
12:01What do you get for these a piece?
12:02Sign brackets are always something that you need.
12:05I always buy them.
12:06Let's say about 60 a piece.
12:08How about on six of them?
12:10Six of them I'd do 175.
12:12Oh, I think I got more than that in it, Frank.
12:16You're at 60 bucks a piece.
12:17I wanted six of them.
12:18That'd be 360.
12:20Yeah, that's it.
12:20Yeah, you're pretty far off there.
12:22About 30 a piece.
12:24That's 180.
12:26We'll make it 200 and you can have them.
12:28Six of them at 200.
12:29Let me look a little bit, see if I can put anything with it.
12:32We're just about there on the sign brackets.
12:33But as Pickers, we need to have some meat left on the bone.
12:36If I can find something else to bundle it all together, I might be able to get everything
12:40at a great price.
12:41Mike, what about this lamp here?
12:44Probably gave too much for that.
12:45I'd have to have 100 and a half for that.
12:47It's an 1880s double-sided hammer shotgun.
12:51It's like a piece of folk art.
12:53It would be great for somebody's man cave.
12:55How about 100?
12:59I think that's what I paid for.
13:03Split the difference.
13:05That's at 125.
13:06If you do 175 on the six brackets, then we read 300.
13:10300 for both of them?
13:12For that and the six brackets.
13:13You're deep.
13:14All right.
13:14He got 300.
13:15I got both items and I did my bundle.
13:25What's this motor?
13:26Oh, that's a part of an airplane.
13:29This motor looks like an inline-four Henderson motor to me.
13:32Henderson was made from 1912 to 1931.
13:35These were the Cadillac, the big dog motorcycle.
13:38It's got a Heath kit on it.
13:40Yeah, it says Heath aircraft here.
13:42Back in the day, people bought these Heath kits and it was a conversion process.
13:46They would take a Henderson inline four-cylinder motor, cut the transmission off of it, change
13:51the oil pan and the crankshaft, and all of a sudden, your Henderson motorcycle is going
13:56to become an airplane motor.
14:07Probably try to get that in down in the transportation museum someday.
14:11This is a beautiful motor.
14:13This is the kind of stuff that you never find anymore.
14:16Well, is this something that you consider selling?
14:18Well, I'd probably consider it, but...
14:21There's always that slight consideration.
14:23There's always that slight consideration.
14:24About 500.
14:30That would sure make a fellow think about it.
14:33I was still toying with the possibility of somehow trying to incorporate the aircraft motor
14:38into the museum with the airplane in there.
14:43Let me think about it.
14:47This, to me, isn't just any motor.
14:49I mean, this is an important piece of American aviation and American motorcycle history.
14:57Okay, let me make it easier for you.
14:59600.
15:02The thinking is over.
15:04All right.
15:04All right.
15:05Mike made me an offer I couldn't refuse.
15:07Woo!
15:08Good deal.
15:09We're moving.
15:09He knew he had me on the line and he just reeled me in with six.
15:14I bought the inline-four Henderson motor with the heat kit on it for $600.
15:18I'm going to have it appraised.
15:21I got the Remington skeet thrower for $80.
15:23I think to the right person, $250.
15:28I bought the early jigsaw for $500.
15:31I'm going to ask $1,500.
15:34Mike, thank you, Frank.
15:35It's been a pleasure.
15:36I think it's great what you guys are doing here.
15:38Thank you, guys.
15:39To see a couple people that take this much time, this much energy, and have this much passion,
15:43and these will be great people to keep in touch with.
15:45If we get back in this area, it will definitely be a place we're going to stop in again.
15:50Thanks, guys.
15:51Bye.
15:52Drop careful.
15:53They were both professional and courteous and kind.
15:57All of the Boy Scout things, I guess.
16:00But it was a wonderful day.
16:01Nice guys.
16:02That was fun.
16:11I'm here in Nashville.
16:13The boys want me to hire somebody for this shop.
16:16Are you Danielle?
16:17Yeah.
16:18Hi.
16:18Hi.
16:18I'm Radal.
16:19Nice to meet you.
16:20Nice to meet you, too.
16:20Radal.
16:21Yeah.
16:21Radal.
16:21Okay.
16:22Yeah.
16:23Awesome.
16:24Hey, I'm Lauren Ray.
16:25My two-clock.
16:26Yeah.
16:26Nice to meet you.
16:27Nice to meet you as well.
16:28Mike and Frank are not easy men to work for.
16:31I have to find somebody who can handle them as well as I handle them and just roll with it.
16:35Tell me a little bit about yourself here.
16:36Well, I've been in Nashville for like 10 years or so.
16:41How long were you a barista for?
16:42About 20 weeks.
16:4520 weeks.
16:46Tractor pull announcer.
16:48Tell me about that.
16:49That was a long time ago.
16:50I'd really rather not bring it up.
16:51Oh, okay.
16:52You weren't answered.
16:54Well, I still do some of that.
16:56Awesome.
16:57You really don't lose your moves, you know, once you got them.
17:00It's so true.
17:01I have to hire somebody who I can trust as much as I trust myself.
17:05I see that you're in prison as well.
17:08Why would you say that?
17:09That's on your resume.
17:11Oh.
17:12Preferably, I like vacation time so I can get paid for the time I'm not here.
17:17Well, that is very good to know then.
17:19Your minors are English and history.
17:21Yeah.
17:21I love history.
17:22I actually am an archaeologist.
17:24You're an actual archaeologist?
17:26Yeah, like digging up bones, digging up stuff, getting in dirt.
17:29Do you know anything about antiques?
17:30I love antiques.
17:31I collect a lot of stuff.
17:33And you're a chicken raiser.
17:34Yes.
17:35My chickens take a lot of time in the morning, so I wouldn't be able to really come in until
17:38about 3 o'clock in the afternoon.
17:40It might be a problem because we do close at 5.
17:44This is a huge responsibility the guys have given me, and I don't want to let them down.
17:52This looks like a perfect little town.
17:54This reminds me of LeClaire.
17:55Do you see population?
17:561,200.
17:57Is it?
17:58Let's make Danielle proud today and not have to call.
18:00I love it.
18:01She'll be wondering what we're doing.
18:02I love it when we freestyle and we score.
18:04Keeps her on her toes.
18:04She's like, wow, that's not job security when they can do it on their own.
18:07That's what I'm talking about.
18:07I better keep up the snuff here.
18:09These guys could probably do it themselves.
18:10Uh-huh.
18:10Today, we're freestyling in Ohio.
18:13We're getting out of the country and getting into these small towns.
18:15Look at that old gas station.
18:17It's pretty cool.
18:17Oil company.
18:19You could have something.
18:20A lot of these small towns can have some amazing treasures.
18:23I'm talking serious roadside relics.
18:26Right here.
18:26Look at this.
18:27Pull over right here.
18:28I see this old storefront.
18:30It's full of motor scooters, motorcycles, bicycles.
18:33Check that out.
18:34See what it looks like.
18:36Oh, man.
18:36It's got tongue stuff in there.
18:37That's what I'm saying.
18:38This does not look like a storefront that's open for business.
18:41I'm looking in the windows, man, and I start salivating.
18:44See, guys, got some triumphs over here.
18:46Check out the wizard.
18:47He's got a Benelli.
18:48You've got to get in here.
18:49It's got a Panther, Hummer.
18:50Dude, look at that.
18:51What's this thing?
18:52A Jawa or something.
18:53Jawa.
18:54Is this your place?
18:55Yeah.
18:55Man, how's it going?
18:56My name's Frank.
18:57Dude, I got a lot of Jack, but I ain't going to have much for sale or anything.
19:00You've got quite the collection here, though.
19:02We've been out freestyling before, and we've met people that don't want to sell.
19:05You can't ride it all.
19:06You can't fix it all.
19:07There's not enough time in the day.
19:08There's got to be something here for us to buy.
19:10We'd still like to look around now.
19:12I'll let you look.
19:13Oh, wow.
19:17You've got a little bit of everything in here, Dave.
19:19No way.
19:20So we're in Dave's place.
19:21He's got everything.
19:22Frank and I could drive all over the country and not see this many car parts and motorcycle
19:27parts in one place.
19:28Is it a 150 or a 200?
19:30That's a 150.
19:31That's what I got.
19:32My name's Dave.
19:33I've lived here all my life.
19:34After I retired, I had a place out in the country and I hated it.
19:37So I moved back here and then started buying junk again and collecting.
19:40What Vespa guy?
19:42I actually went over to Italy in 2001 and brought back a container home.
19:46Oh, okay.
19:46This store came up for sale.
19:48I bought it, fixed them up a little bit.
19:50A lot of the stuff.
19:51I go to swap meets, some flea markets, some garage sales.
19:54Glad we ran into you because you bought everything in this county, probably, it looks like.
19:58Here's Dave's business plan.
19:59Open a storefront, fill it up with stuff, and then don't sell anything.
20:03He loves everything that we do.
20:05How'd you get started in all this?
20:07Well, when I was a kid, they had a neighbor down there and they bought him everything.
20:11And I used to trade him out of it all the time.
20:13So he's like a rich kid.
20:14He had some good stuff that he'd get tired of and then it went to you.
20:17I get it.
20:18I look for things I grew up with that are real mechanical and I like how they're built.
20:22I buy a motorcycle, then an engine, or another motorcycle.
20:25I do everything in here.
20:26Work them, and that one I got in it.
20:29So on my mind, I don't keep the records right down and any of that stuff.
20:33I guess I'll have it until I die.
20:36Toaster tank BMW.
20:38Oh, you got the Lambretta, huh?
20:40Is the motor stuck in that?
20:41No, motor's free in that.
20:42Can I look at it?
20:43I see off in the corner, the SX200 Lambretta.
20:48This is the rarest Lambretta they made.
20:59The top of the headset's missing, and the Speedo, and the horn cover.
21:05Horns there.
21:06Those were pretty speedy.
21:07It was the scooter, man, back in the day.
21:09It's on that.
21:09It's an original paint.
21:11It's missing some stuff.
21:12Let's sit on this, baby.
21:13You know what?
21:1490% of it's there.
21:16Is this something that you would consider selling?
21:19There's a guy who really knows Lambretta.
21:21He really likes that one.
21:23Has he ever made you an offer on this one?
21:24Yeah, $2,000.
21:25$2,000 he offered you for this?
21:27Well, I didn't really want to get rid of it, I would say.
21:29He just said, if you're ever selling, he won first chance at it.
21:32First shot at him.
21:33Dave's a stand-up guy, and he was keeping his word.
21:36I can appreciate that.
21:37It's difficult, but I have to move on.
21:40Now, is this something you'd consider selling?
21:43I don't know.
21:44I've had a pretty good offer on it.
21:47$1,500.
21:49$1,500?
21:50Would you take $2,000 for it?
21:56What year is the Corvette?
21:57$63.
21:58I bought that back, and the 74 gave $3,200 for it.
22:02Split window, man, yeah.
22:04He has a 1963 Corvette.
22:06This is one of the most highly sought-after cars.
22:08People would give their kidney to have this car,
22:11and he's just got it sitting there.
22:13When's the last time this thing's been out in the daylight?
22:15Three or four years, something like that.
22:16I mean, a car like that does not need to be hidden away.
22:19Don't hide them.
22:20Drive them.
22:30It's pretty much stock, except the motor's not stock in it.
22:32It looks original.
22:33What size?
22:33A 350?
22:34Somebody put a 350 in it.
22:35I had one when I was a kid, and I put a 409 in it.
22:38No doubt.
22:38If you're talking about having one speed,
22:39it's just fast, you go.
22:41Yeah.
22:42What do you estimate this at?
22:43I was offered $27.5 for it.
22:46And that's probably what more is worth, you know?
22:48Yeah, it's getting up there.
22:49So even when somebody's offered you more than something's worth,
22:51you still haven't really.
22:52I had cars I should have never sold in a long time,
22:54but I had that 53 Corvette.
22:55I kept telling myself, never sell that.
22:57Well, somebody come along, and I sold it.
22:59So that's the reason I really don't want to sell much anymore.
23:03But back then, what'd you pay for this?
23:05$3,200.
23:06But that was a lot of money back then.
23:07Might as well have been $32,000 today.
23:08Yeah.
23:08Now I'm starting to understand why Dave is so attached.
23:11He used to own an old Corvette.
23:13He sold it.
23:14It's gone.
23:15And then he went out and bought another old Corvette to replace it,
23:18and he's not going to turn it loose again.
23:20Dave's the kind of guy who really cherishes these cars for what they are
23:24and not what they're worth.
23:25Now that thing back Model A back there.
23:27Yeah, Frankie just got one of those.
23:29I'll tell you how I got that, though.
23:30I hit a lot of yard sales while I was working.
23:32And I've seen those little scooters about this long,
23:34and they went $20 for it.
23:36So I bought it, and a guy traded me a wizard pacemaker for it.
23:39You know what that is?
23:40Oh, yeah, you do.
23:40So I turned $20.
23:41It'll never happen again.
23:43$20 into a mile, to a $30 mile length for it.
23:45Yeah.
23:45I can tell Dave really enjoys telling us about his collection.
23:49So a lot of guys just come by like us, and they just drool, huh?
23:52He's a guy just like us.
23:53So I got some houses where I got garages I store stuff in.
23:56Okay.
23:57We walk across the street, and Dave shows us his house.
24:00All right.
24:02Wow, this looks like my old bedroom, Mike.
24:04I can't say it looks like your house.
24:06Hummer.
24:06He's got a .45.
24:07Jeez, I thought I was the only person who had a motorcycle in your bedroom, Dave.
24:10You can tell a lot about a guy by what he cuddles up with at night.
24:13For Dave, it's a Harley Davidson.
24:15What's this?
24:16This bicycle?
24:17Yeah.
24:18It's got a nice crank on it, doesn't it?
24:18Look, I want a crank.
24:19I've never seen one that thin.
24:20Dave looked at a lot of his stuff like it was a piece of art.
24:23He goes, look at the mines.
24:24Look at the sprocket.
24:25It didn't matter if it didn't run.
24:27It didn't matter if he didn't drive it.
24:28He just wanted to look at it.
24:30This guy has got grease and oil running through his veins.
24:33Oh, here you go, Redding Standard.
24:35Where'd you find that at?
24:36Had a yard sale.
24:37My nephew said he's got an old motorcycle engine out there.
24:40You've had some good luck at garage sales.
24:41Redding Standards are very rare motorcycles.
24:44This is a belt drive motor.
24:46Anything that's pre-1915 is insanely hard to find.
24:49How long have you had this?
24:51Oh, five years or something.
24:52I built that.
24:53Put a little stand there for it?
24:54It's all there.
24:55The mag's there.
24:56You know, the carburetor wasn't there.
24:57But, you know, the essence of it, the meat of it was there.
25:00Now, is this something you'd consider selling?
25:04Yeah, I don't know.
25:04I've had a pretty good offer on it.
25:06What kind of offer did you have on this?
25:08$1,500.
25:09$1,500?
25:10Uh-huh.
25:10Would you take two grand for it?
25:12I don't, I'd have to think about that.
25:14Just look how good the stuff is on it.
25:16This guy is knowledgeable.
25:17He's spent around the block, man.
25:18I mean, he's dealt with pickers before.
25:20I wanted him to know how serious I was about this motor.
25:24$2,500.
25:25That's $1,000 more than the other guy offered you.
25:27Uh-huh, yeah.
25:28Once she sells something, then you can have second thoughts, you know.
25:31I know that's a good offer.
25:34I'd kind of like to keep that.
25:36It's hard to find stuff.
25:37Okay, you have to tell us.
25:38You're right, man.
25:39So we get shot down on the motor.
25:41You know, basically shot down on everything.
25:44I ain't giving up on you, man.
25:45Okay.
25:46If Frank and I are going to buy anything on this freestyle,
25:48we're going to have to dig deep and find something
25:50that Dave's going to be willing to let go of at a good price.
25:54Whoa.
25:55Two beautiful items of Vincent and the Jaguar.
25:58Love the hood on these things, man.
26:00Wow, this is Dave's lifestyle of the rich and famous, man.
26:03He's got two of the raddest things on the planet in his garage.
26:07How long have you had the Vincent?
26:08Oh, 15 years.
26:10Can I sit on it?
26:11Yeah, sit on it.
26:12Wow.
26:12Is this a Blackstrad?
26:13This is a Rapide.
26:14That's a Rapide.
26:15This Vincent Rapide is one of the coolest things I've found on a pick.
26:19I don't even care if you ride motorcycles.
26:21When you look at something like this,
26:23sex eases out of every pore of this bike.
26:25Have you run this bike before?
26:27I have started.
26:28But you've never ridden it?
26:29Never ridden it.
26:30They're beautiful bikes, man.
26:32They're made like a watch.
26:33There's so many little parts.
26:34You know, he's going through everything on the bike,
26:36and I'm falling in love with it.
26:37What year is this one?
26:38A 47.
26:39In 48, the Black Shadow came out,
26:41and that was the fastest production motorcycle.
26:52Probably free set the record of Bonneville Salt Flats, man.
26:55He had his bathing suit on,
26:56and he was looking down on a black line,
26:58Frankie, going across the Salt Flats.
26:59That's crazy.
27:00Laying on the bike.
27:01The design of these bikes is amazing.
27:02The motor actually hangs from the frame.
27:05So the motor and the gearbox
27:07are actually the backbone of the bike.
27:09This is it, man.
27:09This is my moment.
27:10I'm going to try to get that Vincent.
27:13Have you had any offers on the Vincent?
27:15Never tried to sell them.
27:19How about $25,000?
27:22I don't think you'll find a Vincent now under $30,000.
27:25I mean, it's complete and runs, you know.
27:28How about $30,000 for it?
27:29Right now, I wouldn't sell.
27:30I know it's not worth much more than that,
27:32but I just, you know,
27:33something that I know I'll never get again.
27:35No, I understand.
27:36I mean, you're lucky to have it.
27:37You're blessed to have it.
27:38Yeah.
27:38You're darn right.
27:39As far as picking goes,
27:40this freestyle was a total bust.
27:42Shutting our dreams in there, Dave.
27:44But we made a connection.
27:46We're starting to build a relationship.
27:48All right, man.
27:49It was nice to meet you.
27:49Thanks for showing us.
27:50I appreciate it.
27:51It was probably one of the most enjoyable days I've ever had.
27:54I've got stuff I wouldn't sell, too.
27:55Mike and Frank really like the thing,
27:57but it's hard to let go of it.
27:59Because I've had it, I can't replace it, you know?
28:01You got a good eye, my friend.
28:04Dave's going to go up on the chalkboard,
28:06and we're going to have Danielle get a hold of him once a month.
28:09Hopefully, someday, this guy's going to come around,
28:11and we can do some business.
28:13All right, buddy.
28:14Thanks.
28:14Have a good trip.
28:15See you later.
28:15Thanks.
28:17Man, Dave was tough.
28:18You know, I burned some daylight there, man.
28:21He just couldn't let go of nothing.
28:22I mean, you can't really knock a guy
28:23that's just as passionate about the stuff as we are.
28:26I know.
28:26You know, I mean, if somebody came over to my house
28:28when I'm an old guy and there's a couple young guys going,
28:30how much is this, how much is that?
28:32Chances are I probably wouldn't sell them nothing either.
28:34You're fine, right?
28:34You know, because all the stuff I got in my house
28:36is stuff I'm keeping.
28:36I hear you.
28:37You know what?
28:38You were bragging, man, saying,
28:39hey, we can do this without Danielle.
28:41Freestyle, freestyle.
28:42I mean, I'm usually on the same page as you.
28:44All right, you know what?
28:46Let's keep this on the down low
28:47about not needing Danielle.
28:49Frankie, the stakes are high now, dude.
28:50We got two stores to fill up.
28:52Next pick better be great.
28:54What do you mean better be great?
28:56All we can do when we're down is go up.
29:00How much for the speaker?
29:0150, 30.
29:02I could have said 75.
29:04I could have said 10.
29:05Chance has been super easy going so far.
29:07I mean, he's going full on honey badger on Mike.
29:10Got to work with me a little bit.
29:11I'm working.
29:18Hey, guess who?
29:19Hello?
29:20Danny.
29:21Hey, what's up?
29:22What's going on down in Nashville?
29:24Are you hiring somebody?
29:25Well, yeah, I'm in the middle of interviews right now,
29:27but I wanted to get this lead out to you real quick.
29:29I mean, have you found anybody that you really like so far?
29:32There's one person I have my eye on.
29:34She looks like she's going to fit perfectly.
29:36I like her level of professionalism.
29:38She's really relaxed.
29:39She's got a great personality.
29:40I think she's going to work out really well.
29:42Okay, that sounds good.
29:43So I have a place for you to go,
29:45and it's Ty and Chad are the two gentlemen you're going to be meeting.
29:49Now they have a tonnage.
29:50Danielle said she got a call from a father and son, Chad and Ty.
29:54Chad's the father.
29:55He's been collecting forever.
29:56Now this stuff's all for sale?
29:58Yeah, everything's for sale.
29:59All right, cool.
30:00Chad's at the point in his life where he wants to start selling some stuff.
30:03That's music to a picker's ears.
30:05All right, send us the coordinates.
30:07Hurry.
30:07Later.
30:10All right, buddy.
30:12This sounds like a good one.
30:14Ah, look at the little puppies.
30:15Puppies.
30:17Look out.
30:17What sounds great about this pick is these guys didn't pigeonhole themselves into one thing.
30:23They've been buying everything, so who knows what we're going to find.
30:26Look at those guys.
30:27They're going to lead us up to the property.
30:28Oh, they are.
30:29Whenever we run into a guy that won't sell, we know the next day it's going to be better.
30:33Look at that sign.
30:34I know he's like a service station guy.
30:36Look at this guy.
30:37Columbus Dispatch.
30:38Right away, I can tell this guy is a collector.
30:40I mean, he's got some stuff over in the yard here.
30:41He's got some signs up.
30:42This place is cool, man.
30:43Some guy's got some stuff outside.
30:44I love this iron.
30:45I know.
30:45I'm thinking to myself, this guy's got stuff outside.
30:47You know, he's going to have some good stuff inside.
30:49Oh, check it out.
30:50I like that sign.
30:51Free.
30:51No doubt.
30:52What is that?
30:52A little monkey or something.
30:54Hi, guys.
30:55Hey.
30:55I was just checking out the coconut head in the box.
30:57Chad Moore.
30:58Chad, how you doing?
30:58Nice to meet you.
30:59Frank, nice to meet you.
31:00It's my son, Ty.
31:01Hey, Ty.
31:01How you doing?
31:02How you doing?
31:02Danielle said you guys are in the picking team.
31:04Well, I've been doing it for 50 years, and Ty kind of has my overflow.
31:08We both like antiques, and we've been lifelong collectors.
31:11Come on in.
31:13Cool.
31:15Oh, yeah.
31:18He's got stuff all over the table.
31:21It's surrounded by barber chairs.
31:24He's got stuff on the walls.
31:25I mean, there's a lot to look at.
31:27Tell us this now.
31:27I mean, you've been collecting for this long.
31:29Why are you finally letting go of some stuff?
31:32I'm 68, okay?
31:34I don't really want to have a public auction.
31:36I have never sold anything.
31:38The house is so cluttered.
31:40My daughter called me this morning and told me in a nice way, no more antiques.
31:45Ty's house is filled up, so I don't have anybody to take these things.
31:49It's time to let go and pass some things on to people that enjoy them.
31:53That's the way we are, too.
31:55I mean, sometimes I feel like our job is putting things in their place.
31:59But when you get down to it, you've got to be able to part with things.
32:02I'm interested in looking around.
32:03I'm just going to let you guys poke around.
32:06That's nice.
32:07Man, this is a neat piece.
32:09It's a nice slot machine.
32:11Screen Star has got the Academy Award on in front of it.
32:13That's pretty cool.
32:14Oh, my God.
32:15What is that?
32:15This is Odd Fellows.
32:16That's Odd Fellows.
32:17Yeah.
32:18Goliath.
32:18Okay.
32:19Odd Fellows is a paternal organization that surrounded themselves with secrecy, mystery, and bizarre
32:24rituals.
32:25Is that paper mache?
32:26Yes.
32:27Let me hold it.
32:27Sure.
32:28It scares the crap out of the grandkids.
32:31I bet.
32:32Look at that thing, man.
32:33It's all hand-painted.
32:34Mike, I am for sale.
32:36Oh, yeah?
32:36How much are you asking for yourself?
32:38$100.
32:39Goliath is out of here.
32:40What kind of age do you think this is?
32:42Oh, it's ours.
32:42How old is this?
32:4330s, 40s.
32:44What did they teach you with this at the Odd Fellows?
32:46You're asking some secret.
32:48I know.
32:48I know you're...
32:49I've got to be very careful that I don't...
32:51I don't want to be kicked out of the Odd Fellows.
32:53Every pick I'm on, my main goal is to find things that are very unusual for the store.
32:58It's pretty cool.
32:59What's that?
33:00My second goal is to find things that look like Frank.
33:03That's you, dude.
33:04Okay, close.
33:05Really close.
33:06Really close.
33:06There's a similarity there.
33:08I've got to have it.
33:09$100.
33:09Goliath is out of here.
33:11This Goliath Odd Fellows mask is very cool.
33:14I'm more of a player of 60 bucks.
33:16I could be persuaded for 75.
33:18$15 is not much.
33:20I'm at 50.
33:2160?
33:23You're going the other way.
33:24Did I say 60?
33:25You said 60.
33:26You said 60.
33:26Did I say 60?
33:26Yeah, you said 60.
33:27All right, 60 bucks.
33:29Deal.
33:29All right, Frank.
33:30I just bought your head.
33:33Okay.
33:34What did you think of growing up in this kind of atmosphere?
33:36I can imagine being 14, 15 years old.
33:39That was our main telephone growing up in that phone booth.
33:41No way.
33:42When you're talking to your girlfriend for two hours, it's a nightmare to be in that phone
33:46booth.
33:46So you had to close the door, and then he'd be right outside.
33:50So he could hear every word you were saying?
33:52He could hear it.
33:52And it was very uncomfortable.
33:54They didn't talk very long.
34:00Man, that Brunswick Records piece.
34:03I think it's cool.
34:03That's incredible.
34:04That's a big trouble piece.
34:05Brunswick was one of the big three American record companies.
34:08I would put this sign in the late teens, early 20s.
34:19What do you value this at?
34:21I have to have $375 for that.
34:23God, that's cool, man.
34:25At $375, there's a little bit of meat on the bone.
34:28Audiophiles that love records, phonographs, anything that has to do with music are going
34:33to love this sign.
34:34At $375, it's the price to sell it.
34:37I'll do $350.
34:38I've got to stick with the $375.
34:40How about $370?
34:42Make me feel like I'm getting a good deal.
34:45Done deal.
34:46All right.
34:47All right.
34:48I did it.
34:49You know what?
34:50The reason I did buy this is because if you see the way she's cupping her hands as she's
34:54listening to that music, she's in love.
34:56And now I'm in love because now I own it.
35:01This is a junk room.
35:02Super duper.
35:03You're just going to have to get down on your hands and knees and scurry around.
35:06So the next place that Chad takes us is to his basement.
35:09This looks like the overload.
35:11The stuff he doesn't have room for.
35:13I'm finally at home.
35:14What about this razor straps thing?
35:16It looks kind of cool.
35:17A razor strap is a band of leather that barbers would use to sharpen their straight razors with.
35:23It came out of a local barber shop.
35:24The display case is near mint.
35:26I mean, with all the gold lettering, everything is intact.
35:29Well, something like that would be worth.
35:30I need to have you make me an offer.
35:32$75.
35:33Kick it up a notch.
35:34$85.
35:35Done deal.
35:36Done deal.
35:36This is a really sweet piece.
35:39This is an amp.
35:40I thought it was a speaker.
35:41Yeah, it's just a speaker.
35:42It's kind of cool.
35:43Yeah, it's kind of cool.
35:44It's in the front.
35:45Victor, I like that.
35:45Victor.
35:46Victor was an audio company that got bought out by RCA.
35:48RCA still continued to make products under the name of Victor.
35:51Victor, this is a very cool speaker.
35:53I dated around the 1940s.
35:55How much for the speaker?
35:56$50.
35:57$30.
35:58$50.
35:59$35.
36:02I could have said $75.
36:03I could have said $10.
36:05You know, Chan's been super easy going so far, but he's going full on honey badger on Mike.
36:10You've got to work with me a little bit.
36:11I'm working.
36:12$45.
36:13$40.
36:15All right.
36:16I was breaking a sweat there on that break.
36:17You guys were, man.
36:18I was breaking a sweat.
36:19This speaker has a great look.
36:21It looked awesome in someone's music room.
36:24What do you get on the little fire truck?
36:26$35.
36:27How about this one right here?
36:29$100.
36:30$100.
36:31$100.
36:31$100 on that.
36:31Yeah, you're right on the money there.
36:33The little fire truck's made by RCA.
36:35RCA started out in the 1920s making cast iron toys.
36:38They just don't make stuff like this anymore, and they're in great condition.
36:50If you bundle them, you can have them both for $175.
36:54I'd take this one for $35.
36:55I might wait on this one.
36:56I'd do $100 on it, though.
36:58Ooh.
37:01$135.
37:02$135 done.
37:03You got it.
37:04You know, for Chad being a collector that's been collecting for 50 years, he's not having
37:07a hard time letting go.
37:09Where to next, coach?
37:10My office.
37:11All right.
37:11This collection never ends.
37:13Okay, guys.
37:14This is my office.
37:15That's cool, though.
37:17Oh, my God.
37:18Look at that paint sign.
37:19The first thing I noticed was a really large wood Mound City paint sign.
37:24I'd say it's around the turn of the century, and for its age, it was in incredible condition.
37:28This is truly American art.
37:30I mean, you feel the mock shots.
37:31If you go back far enough, a lot of signs border the lines between advertising and folk
37:36art.
37:36This sign is stone cold cool.
37:39I love it.
37:40This particular engine was used on a parasol aircraft.
37:43In this condition, Ken, what would you value it at?
37:47Yeah, I'm like, in this condition, as is where it is, I'd probably say...
37:54What do you value this at?
37:56$4.50.
37:58How long have you had it?
37:58It's so nice and neat.
37:59How long have you had it?
38:00I found it in the late 60s in an old paint store on the Ohio River.
38:04An older gentleman had it on the wall behind his counter.
38:08You knowing the story behind it is like everything to me.
38:12Learning the history of an item is what my job is all about.
38:15I always pass on the backstory to the next person that's going to own the item.
38:19I like where she's on the top.
38:21See, she's spinning on the top.
38:21Yeah, I saw she's spinning on the top.
38:23I like where it says horseshoe paint, too.
38:25I'll do $350.
38:27$400.
38:28$400 bucks?
38:29Firm $400.
38:30I can't replace it.
38:33Chad's exactly right about this sign.
38:35He's never going to find another one, and I'm never going to have the opportunity to buy
38:39something like this.
38:40I want it.
38:40I got to have it.
38:41I'll take it.
38:43I'll take it.
38:44I love it.
38:45This was a great pick.
38:46It was really fun.
38:47We got some cool things, and we met two really great guys.
38:50All right.
38:50Let me get the van door here.
38:52I bought the Mountain City paint sign for $400.
38:54I'm going to ask $850.
38:58I bought the display case for the Razor Straps for $85.
39:01I think I can get up to $300.
39:05I bought the two trucks for $135.
39:07I think if I sell them together, I can get at least $250.
39:12Thanks, man.
39:13Nice to meet you, Chad.
39:13Nice to meet you, Chad.
39:14Nice to meet you, Ty.
39:14Nice to meet you, guys.
39:15Not often we get to meet a picking duel just like ourselves.
39:18Mike and Frank are two dudes.
39:20They're just fabulous, man.
39:22Like I say, they're just two dudes.
39:24I'm elated with the amount of money I received, and I also think Frank and Mike got some goodbyes.
39:30All right, buddy.
39:31See you.
39:31Thanks.
39:32See you, boys.
39:32Take care.
39:33I had fun.
39:33I had a great time.
39:34Safe trip.
39:35All right, man.
39:36Have a good one.
39:37Hey.
39:41Let's head home.
39:42Woo-hoo.
39:56Hey, how's it going?
39:57Hey, I need to see Danielle.
39:59Oh, she's not here.
40:00What's up?
40:00She called about an aircraft motor.
40:02Oh, you're the appraiser?
40:03Yes.
40:04Okay, yeah.
40:04Heath Motor?
40:05Yes.
40:05Hey, I'm Mike.
40:06How are you doing?
40:07How are you?
40:07Yeah, nice to meet you.
40:07I got it in the other room here.
40:08Okay, great.
40:09Let me show you.
40:10I'm Ken DeFore, and I own a company called Aviation Management Consulting, and we appraise aircraft
40:14and aircraft parts.
40:17Frankie, this is my new friend, Ken.
40:19Nice to meet you.
40:19Hi, Frank.
40:20How are you?
40:20Pleasure.
40:20Here it is, man.
40:21Frank and I dug this motor up in West Virginia.
40:24What's this motor?
40:25Oh, that's a part of an airplane.
40:28What do you think?
40:30Wow.
40:30Henderson Heath.
40:31Yep.
40:32The craft engine.
40:32This particular engine is unique because it was a hybrid engine taken off of a motorcycle,
40:37Henderson, which was a very reliable, strong engine, and then it was modified for Heath's
40:42use on his aircraft.
40:43What's unique about Ed Heath was he was probably the father of the home-built airplane, and he
40:49started producing the kits right before the end of World War I.
40:53And this particular engine was used on a parasol aircraft that he built.
40:57Wow.
40:57Almost like the predecessor to Ultralight.
41:00I mean, predecessor to almost everything.
41:01Ed Heath's goal was to produce an airplane that the average man or person could afford
41:07on the street in those days.
41:08Think about it.
41:09In 1927, to be able to build an airplane in your backyard and fly around?
41:15I mean, that seems crazy now.
41:17Imagine how crazy that must have seemed back then.
41:20And he was based out of Chicago.
41:21He was out of Chicago.
41:22One of his first jobs was with Curtis Wright, and he wanted to work on the airplanes, but
41:27they put him in the motorcycle division.
41:39And he was unhappy there, but he took the time to learn about not only motorcycle engines,
41:43but also the aircraft.
41:44So it's wild how the two collided there.
41:46Exactly.
41:47His interest in the aircraft and him getting a job with the motorcycles.
41:51Right.
41:51That's pretty cool.
41:51And he was not professionally trained.
41:53He was not an engineer.
41:54He was self-taught.
41:56And he basically taught himself how to fly, too.
41:59Wow.
41:59That's cool.
42:00He's got like a genius, man.
42:01No doubt.
42:01So where did he ever go with it?
42:03I mean, what was the demise of the company?
42:04I mean...
42:05The demise of the company, unfortunately, was he died in an airplane crash.
42:08Wow.
42:09So, I mean, he lived it, breathed it?
42:12Yeah, man.
42:13All the way down.
42:14All the way down.
42:15You've been incredible in giving us Ed Heath's story and some information on the motor.
42:20The biggest thing for me right now is, in this condition, Ken, you know, I know it's missing
42:25a few parts.
42:26What would you value it at?
42:29Yeah, Mike, in this condition, as is where it is, I'd probably say $2,500.
42:38Really?
42:39Today was payday.
42:41Man, that's awesome.
42:42That's good.
42:42We spent $600 on the motor.
42:45We just had it appraised for $2,500.
42:48Well, it sounds like Danny called the right guy.
42:50Seriously.
42:51Thank you so much.
42:52Thanks for the info.
42:53Danielle did a great job lining up this appraisal.
42:56Even though the girl's not here, she's still kicking butt.
42:59All right.
42:59Thank you so much.
43:04Heather's being a prototype here.
43:06It's kind of junky.
43:07You know what I'm saying?
43:07Well, don't be drinking around anymore.
43:08I want to lose.
43:09No, I'm not.
43:09But I mean, if $2,500...
43:11Hey!
43:12Hey, Danny.
43:13Hey.
43:14Ken left.
43:15He did a great job on the appraisal.
43:16Awesome.
43:17He was awesome.
43:18He knew everything about it.
43:18He was pretty good.
43:19Guess what?
43:20$2,500.
43:22Really?
43:23Yeah.
43:23$2,500, girl.
43:25That's great.
43:26Where'd you find that guy?
43:27More interesting.
43:28I got other good news.
43:29I have somebody for the store.
43:31Her name's Lauren.
43:32She's awesome.
43:33You hired somebody for the store?
43:34Yeah.
43:34She's super cool.
43:35Okay, you're hired.
43:36Are you serious?
43:37Yeah.
43:38Awesome.
43:38Wow, thank you.
43:39This is the coolest ever.
43:40Awesome.
43:41You're on it, man.
43:42I know.
43:42That's good.
43:43That's good.
43:43That's cool.
43:44A little celebration coming up.
43:46Mr. Wolf, take a glass.
43:47All right.
43:48Mr. Fritz, take a glass.
43:49Man, you're going all out here.
43:50Nashville is taken care of.
43:52Cheers.
43:53It's in Nashville.
43:59That's not good.
