00:00Oh, Frank, you look at that.
00:01I love airplanes.
00:03Are any of the planes for sale?
00:05Big plane, big plane, a plane.
00:08Danielle sends us to a lot of characters.
00:11Hey, get your hands off.
00:12And then all of a sudden, Eddie starts freaking out.
00:14Don't even think about it, big boy.
00:16He gets up into my face.
00:20Oh, look at that voice.
00:21You can't even see the front of the house.
00:23Jeff, what's going on here, man?
00:25She's kind of got out of control.
00:26Is this something you'd sell?
00:28Probably not.
00:29Is that for sale?
00:29Probably not.
00:30Jeff could be the classic junker.
00:32These guys buy, but they don't want to sell.
00:34This is all your stuff.
00:36Put that on your bench.
00:37What do you mean, your bench?
00:37Now, this is broke, too.
00:38Knock it off.
00:39You guys are just as bad as this pick I've been working on.
00:41Or as bad as a pick.
00:42Hatfield-McCoy pick.
00:44I'd hate for us to be like the Hatfields and McCoys.
00:46We could be the first pickers to get into this old general store
00:49right in the center of Hatfield and McCoy territory.
00:52This is huge.
00:53Maybe I should not have mentioned the Hatfield pick
00:56until I knew it was a sure thing.
00:58I'm Mike Wolf, and I'm Frank Fretz.
01:01And we're pickers.
01:04We travel the back roads of America looking to buy rusty gold.
01:10We make a living telling the history of America one piece at a time.
01:21Frank, have you seen that bailing wire I had?
01:24Uh-uh.
01:24I had some bailing wire.
01:25It was on here.
01:26I don't remember it.
01:27Frank and I have known each other for a long time,
01:29but sometimes the little guy gets on my nerves,
01:31like when he leaves all his stuff all over my bench.
01:34This is yours.
01:35This is yours.
01:36This is yours.
01:36This is all your stuff.
01:38Put that on your bench.
01:39What do you mean, your bench?
01:40Mike needs to chill, you know, so I used his bench.
01:42What's the big deal?
01:43Whatever.
01:44And look at this.
01:44This is what I'm talking about.
01:45Remember my monster model?
01:46Now this is broke, too.
01:47Knock it off.
01:47You guys are just as bad as this pick I've been working on.
01:50Just knock it off.
01:51We're as bad as a pick you're working on.
01:52Hatfield-McCoy pick.
01:54Danielle just got my attention.
01:56The Hatfields and McCoys are two families
01:58from the West Virginia-Kentucky border
01:59that had a legendary feud back in the late 1800s.
02:02It's an amazing piece of American history,
02:04and I've always been interested in this story.
02:07I've been working on this lead.
02:08It's going to be incredible.
02:09We're all history buffs here,
02:10so if I can get this lead, the boys will go crazy.
02:14You got your side of the van.
02:15I got my side of the van.
02:16Yeah, don't worry about it.
02:16I got my side right here.
02:17Touch your door.
02:18Touch your door.
02:18Yeah, just keep your stuff on your side, dude.
02:20I swear to God, sometimes I just feel like
02:21Frank and Mike's babysitter.
02:23They've divided the van in half.
02:25Honestly, guys, stop it,
02:26because this is going to end up in a fist fight,
02:28and then I'm going to have to...
02:29Thanks, Danielle.
02:30Bye.
02:31Thanks.
02:32I'm sending the boys to Georgia
02:33to see a collector named Eddie.
02:35In the meantime, I am determined
02:36to lock in this Hatfield lead.
02:49Wow, look at that place.
02:50That's the only way it lives there.
02:52Danielle's sending us to a guy
02:53that's been collecting his whole life.
02:55Is that it?
02:56This is it, right up here.
02:57He's at the point where he wants to sell some stuff.
02:59This is a perfect opportunity for a picker.
03:05I can see that Mike's out back there, dude.
03:11Can I help you out?
03:12Hey, you Eddie?
03:13Hey.
03:14Hey, I'm Mike.
03:14Nice to meet you.
03:15Hi.
03:15How you doing?
03:16Frank, you talk to Danielle on the phone?
03:18Oh, yes.
03:19What a sweet.
03:20Is she a charmer?
03:21Oh, she is.
03:23She is a charmer.
03:24I could tell that Danielle
03:25made a great impression on Eddie.
03:27She's doing her job.
03:28She's paving the way to a great pick.
03:29So how long have you been collecting?
03:31Y'all lay off and I'm over 50 years.
03:33Oh, my gosh.
03:34Sounds like you and me.
03:35We've been around since we've been little kids, too.
03:37Can we take a look around?
03:38Yes, sir.
03:38Which way do you want to go?
03:39Right through this puddler.
03:41All right.
03:41We walk out in the back into the garage.
03:44This is my accumulation.
03:52Wow.
03:53Oh, my gosh.
03:55It's insane.
03:56Everywhere you look, there's handlebars, gas tanks.
03:59Every corner is cluttered, and there's stuff hanging from the ceiling.
04:02This is going to be an awesome pick.
04:04Oh, Frank, you look at that.
04:05I actually got about 100 miles on it.
04:08I'm going to shows and everything.
04:1048?
04:11So you used to ride this thing a lot.
04:12Yeah.
04:13The first vintage motorcycle I ever bought was a 1948 Indian Chief.
04:17Eddie's got the same motorcycle right here, so I know we're going to get along great.
04:21But what do you value this at?
04:26There's not but one person ridden this bike since I've owned it, and it's something I truly
04:31enjoy.
04:32Who said I wouldn't sell it?
04:34This bike is his pride and joy.
04:36We all have those things that are NFS, not for sale.
04:39Hey, get your hands off.
04:41And then all of a sudden, Eddie starts freaking out.
04:43Don't even think about it, big boy.
04:45He gets up into my face, and I'm hoping this guy ain't serious.
04:53You're done with that.
04:54Danielle sends us to a lot of characters.
04:56Eddie is a real joker.
04:58I've had him from 8 to 8.
04:59He sent him the same pictures taken.
05:02Yeah, that's the way I am with my bikes, too.
05:04Yeah, don't hide them, ride them, you know?
05:05Yeah.
05:06What else you got?
05:11No, no, no.
05:13This one's busted up.
05:15Yeah.
05:15Oh, yeah.
05:16When I'm crawling around up top, I find this really cool old CB radio.
05:20Back in the day, the government required every CB user to have a license and a signed call
05:25letters.
05:25There were even federal agents that would go bust anybody that was using an illegal handle.
05:30That mic, that's a D-104.
05:32Yeah, is that a good one?
05:33Oh, shoot.
05:34Yeah.
05:35This CB radio is from the 1960s, and it has two parts, the transceiver and a really awesome
05:40microphone.
05:41Anybody that used this would have felt like the king of the airwaves.
05:56First mama.
05:58What was your handle?
05:59Oh, y'all lay.
06:01What was it?
06:01Well, believe it or not, it's Lancelot.
06:04It's our Lancelot.
06:05I worked for Lance's snack food.
06:07Oh, you did?
06:08Yeah.
06:09How much do you want for this?
06:12Probably a hundred and a half.
06:14Woo!
06:15Man.
06:16Break one nine.
06:17Hey.
06:19Break one nine to Lancelot.
06:21I'm at 50.
06:22Hey.
06:23I'm back here, break.
06:24I'm playing it on there.
06:25I'll tell you what, this is Lancelot.
06:27T-N-O.
06:27When Frankie handed Eddie the microphone, it was like he was transported back in time,
06:32man.
06:33We're out.
06:34We're gone.
06:35Too much bull.
06:36We'll catch you on the flip flops.
06:40Well, how much am I getting it for?
06:42$75.
06:42Ooh.
06:43How about $60?
06:45$65.
06:46All right, $65.
06:47$65.
06:47I'm fine.
06:48I'm fine.
06:48Sold.
06:49This is a fantastic piece to break the ice with over and out.
06:57Are any of the plans for sale?
06:59Oh.
07:00Be plane, boss.
07:01Be plane.
07:02Be plane.
07:02Be plane.
07:03I love airplanes.
07:04I mean, I've had them as a kid.
07:06I used to make them when I was a kid.
07:07Those are cool.
07:08That was my first so-called love.
07:11That was?
07:12Okay.
07:12At 11 years old, I was in the hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, and my uncle brought me an airplane
07:19down there.
07:20So you like anything with a motor on it?
07:22I just love it.
07:23I like everything.
07:24We all do a plane.
07:25It looks like it.
07:26You and me both.
07:27When's the last time you flew the planes?
07:29About five years ago.
07:31A lot of time when you find collectors, they got into something, then they kind of burned
07:34out on it.
07:35Those are the kind of things I look for.
07:36What do you get for planes like that?
07:40That one over there.
07:41How much is something like that one?
07:46$100 bill.
07:48$100?
07:49That's a lot of building there for $100.
07:51Yeah.
07:52A lot of detail.
07:54You know what?
07:55I'll take it.
07:57He's selling the planes, and he's got a bunch.
07:59Why stop at one?
08:00I'm interested in the yellow one here.
08:03So this has got two wings.
08:05$50 a wing?
08:06Yeah.
08:07Okay.
08:07How much is something like that one?
08:10About $2.25 on that.
08:11How about that one, the biplane?
08:13I had $3 on that.
08:15$3 on that?
08:16I gave him what he wanted on the first one, so I hope I can see my discount on the
08:20bundle.
08:20How about for all three, $400?
08:25That's cash.
08:30Over and high.
08:33$400.
08:34Over and high.
08:36$400.
08:37$500.
08:38$4.25.
08:43$4.25.
08:44$4.25.
08:44All right.
08:46Woo!
08:47I'm usually glad when I come across one piece I like, but to be able to get a bundle like
08:50this, I'm up in the clouds.
08:58God, I love you, y'all.
09:00Well, I'm 71 years old.
09:02It's past November.
09:03And when you get as old as I am, it's just time to pass it on, really.
09:09What's this body up here, Eddie?
09:11It's a Cobra.
09:12This thing's really cool.
09:14It goes on a go-kart.
09:15It looks like it's in great condition.
09:16That's kind of cool.
09:17Yeah.
09:18I've seen Corvettes before.
09:19I've seen lots of different things.
09:20I've seen lots of different models, but the Cobra body, I've never seen that before.
09:23Was it something you'd sell?
09:25Yeah.
09:26I mean, there's a lot of people that are into go-karts.
09:28I mean, let's just face it.
09:29All you've got to do is have the frame, and you can have a Cobra.
09:44Eddie, how much do you want for the body here?
09:51I'd go $1.75 on it?
09:55Well, I'd have to have a frame to put it on with a...
09:57Yeah.
09:58How about $100?
10:01Make it $100.5.
10:02It's yours.
10:05I'd do $100.5.
10:07I'll do $145.
10:10How about $125?
10:11$130.
10:12$125.
10:13$130.
10:14$125.
10:14$130.
10:15$130.
10:15$130.
10:18I love negotiating with Eddie.
10:20I mean, he keeps things light, and his prices are great.
10:23He pulls up the black tarp, and boom, there it is.
10:27Wow.
10:28Any Harley enthusiast would walk barefoot through a junkyard without a tetanus shot to buy this knucklehead.
10:35Is this something you'd even sell?
10:38Hey.
10:40That's it?
10:41There it is.
10:42Grocery and hardware store.
10:42All these grocery and hardware stuff.
10:44That's it?
10:44We're tracing the steps of one of the most infamous Hatfields.
10:47This is legendary.
10:49The whole time I'm thinking when we're standing on the front porch of this place is that Devil
10:54Lance Hatfield cast his shadow on this door many years ago.
11:02He pulls up the black tarp, and boom, there it is.
11:07A 1937 knucklehead.
11:10Wow.
11:11That's awesome.
11:12God dang.
11:14Anything that you can find pre-1940 that's hardly knucklehead is like mining gold.
11:21This frame is butchered, man.
11:23The chassis's all jacked up.
11:25It's chopped.
11:25It's raked.
11:26It's got a lot of incorrect parts.
11:28But the motor is sitting there looking beautiful.
11:31Now I've got the pushrods, pushrod tubes, all kind of stuff for this engine.
11:36We see knuckleheads from time to time.
11:38But finding somebody that wants to sell one, no matter the condition, is really rare.
11:42What are you looking to get out of this, Eddie?
11:50Or is this something you'd even sell?
11:55I know it sounds crazy.
11:58It'd take five bills.
12:00Five grand to get all this here?
12:03Yeah.
12:04Would you sell just the motor?
12:07I would, but I'd throw the frame in, too.
12:10So you're buying it all?
12:12No, I mean, really.
12:14I hear you.
12:15I'm just asking, you know.
12:16I'm not really seeing any value in the chassis, but this motor is worth fighting for.
12:21I love the motor.
12:22If you were to separate it and just sell the motor, I'd be interested in it for three grand.
12:34If Eddie lets go with this 1937 knucklehead motor, that alone is worth the trip to Georgia.
12:44I'm going to do that.
12:45You're going to do it?
12:46I'm going to do it.
12:47Any Harley enthusiast would walk barefoot through a junkyard without a tetanus shot to buy this motor.
12:53And I just bought it.
12:56Eddie.
12:57Yeah.
12:57Now that I've got my hands on this thing and I'm moving it around.
13:00Yes.
13:01I'm kind of liking it.
13:02Yeah, it's raked.
13:03Yeah, it's chopped.
13:04Yeah, the fork's been extended.
13:05But you know what?
13:06It's got a cool front wheel.
13:08The rear wheel's in decent condition.
13:09It's got the original transmission.
13:11Yeah, man.
13:12I'm feeling like Fonda.
13:13As a picker, it's important to know when you make a mistake.
13:16I should have bundled the motor and the chassis together in the first place.
13:21You were at five grand on the whole thing.
13:24Right.
13:24Okay.
13:25I already bought the motor for three grand.
13:27Right.
13:28How about another thousand for this?
13:30So it'd be 4,000 total for the whole package.
13:36Big thing on it.
13:38Ah!
13:40All right, let me see.
13:40Let me get off of it for a second here.
13:42Mike really lost his leverage when he paid up for the motor.
13:45Now Eddie's got his three grand and he's at his mercy for the chassis.
13:48For a thousand, it looks good.
13:51Met a grand, four grand.
13:53You were at five.
13:54You're only coming off a G note.
13:56It looked better at 12 and high.
13:59I'm going to be really bummed if I have to leave this behind today,
14:02but there's no way I can do more than a thousand.
14:04Uh, I'm going to lay it.
14:07You want to do a thousand?
14:08Yeah.
14:08All right, a thousand bucks.
14:09I bought the 37 knucklehead motor and the chassis separately,
14:12but this is a really good deal.
14:14Well, we appreciate you letting us look around, man.
14:16It's been fun.
14:17Eddie was such a cool guy.
14:19I mean, this is a guy that's been riding motorcycles longer than I've been alive,
14:23but he had the same exact passion as we did.
14:27Careful.
14:28I bought the four planes for $525.
14:30I think I can get at least $300 apiece.
14:34Head on out.
14:37I bought the Colbert go-kart chassis for $130.
14:40I think it's worth at least $200.
14:45Got it?
14:45Yeah, get it up there.
14:46Hey, that's my side of the van.
14:48I bought the chopped Harley frame with the knucklehead motor for $4,000.
14:51I'm going to ask $7,500.
14:56Hey, it was an honor.
14:57Thanks.
14:58It really was.
14:58It goes both ways.
15:00Nice to meet the partner.
15:01It's always nice to meet somebody who's got the same passion we do.
15:03I might go out and buy some more stuff.
15:06Just don't tell me why, man.
15:08Thanks, man.
15:09See ya.
15:10Days like today when I can find a 1937 Harley knucklehead engine.
15:16CA!
15:17Cal!
15:17Keep rolling!
15:18That's the kind of stuff that keeps me motivated, keeps me passionate, keeps me on the road.
15:23It makes you think, hey, it's not all found.
15:25It's still out there.
15:33I'm kind of disappointed that you're not paying attention to your side of the van.
15:37My stuff's on my side.
15:38The wingspan on your planes are this much over my side.
15:41The 37 knucklehead, I mean, it's actually on my side.
15:43It's not on your side.
15:44It is.
15:45Technically, it is.
15:46I'd hate for us to be like the Hatfields and McCoys.
15:49I mean, you and I have known each other way too long.
15:51Tell me a little bit more about this Hatfield-McCoy thing.
15:53They were families, West Virginia, Kentucky, right on the border.
15:57One of the McCoys fought for the Union Army, okay?
16:00He came home wounded, and the Hatfields thought he was a traitor, and they killed him.
16:04Boom!
16:04That started the biggie.
16:06The Hatfields and McCoy feud.
16:27Danny D, what's up?
16:28Hey, I got a new lead for you.
16:30What about the Hatfields and McCoy lead?
16:32It's going to take me just a minute.
16:34You've got to give me some time here, because I've got to finesse the situation.
16:37Maybe I should not have mentioned the Hatfield pick until I knew it was a sure thing.
16:43Yeah, but anyway, right now I'm sending you to Jeff.
16:45This dude started collecting when he was like four or five years old.
16:48Oh, that's cool.
16:49I think you'll have a lot in common there.
16:51This place is really off the beaten path, and it's kind of hard to find.
16:54So we want you to meet him at this coffee shop, and you'll follow him to the pick.
16:57All right, thanks for the lead.
16:59Okay, talk to you later.
17:00Goodbye.
17:01Bye.
17:02Jeff sounds like the perfect pick, because this guy's been doing it his whole life, just like us.
17:08This is the coffee place.
17:11Hey, you Jeff?
17:12Yep.
17:14How's it going, my friend?
17:16I'm Mike.
17:16Hey, Mike, nice to meet you.
17:18How are you doing?
17:18Hey, Frank, nice to meet you.
17:20Talked Danny on the phone?
17:21Yeah.
17:21Say you were a kid picker?
17:22Yep.
17:23I started collecting when I was really young, because my grandmother lived near an auction,
17:26and we just would go there on Friday and Saturday nights for fun.
17:29So where should we start?
17:30We'll head out to the property if you want to.
17:32Heck yeah.
17:32Yeah, so, okay.
17:34Jeff's got a property a little bit out of town.
17:36Don't go too fast.
17:37Follow you?
17:37All right.
17:37No, we won't.
17:38All right.
17:38He doesn't even live there.
17:39It's just a home to his junk.
17:46This looks like he's off the beaten track up here.
17:48I'm glad we're following him.
17:49Are you kidding me?
17:49We're way off it, man.
17:50This is exactly where we want to be.
17:53Oh, look at this place.
17:55This looks good.
17:56Look at that place.
17:56You can't even see the front of the house.
17:58This is not what I expected by walking into his coffee shop.
18:01This looks good.
18:03All right.
18:03I'm diving first.
18:04Yeah, I don't think so.
18:06Jeff, what's going on here, man?
18:09It's kind of got out of control.
18:10It looks a little out of control.
18:12You think?
18:13When's the last time you were inside here?
18:14Oh, gosh.
18:15A couple years ago, probably.
18:16Obviously, you're buying more than you're selling.
18:18Yep.
18:18Oh, Lord, yeah.
18:19So now it's time to sell a little bit.
18:20It's time to sell a little bit, yeah.
18:21We'll see if we can lighten your load.
18:22Okay.
18:23This looks like the automotive area.
18:25There's the tub section.
18:26There's the sinks.
18:27Collecting stuff is kind of like an addiction to me.
18:30It's kind of like I'm addicted to coffee,
18:31and I'm addicted to collecting items.
18:33What's up with the gas pump?
18:34Is that for sale?
18:35Uh, possibly.
18:37The first thing that I see is this really nice,
18:40tall, yellow wing pump.
18:43Man, the door's got a big whammy in it.
18:46Anytime I see a gas pump, no matter what the condition,
18:49I always want to make an offer because they're in such demand at the shop.
18:53What do you got on something like this?
18:55Um, I don't know.
18:56You guys tell me what to do.
18:57Just trying to get a read on you, you know, as far as, like,
18:59I mean, you've been doing this for a while, it looks like.
19:02Yeah.
19:03Apparently.
19:04Apparently.
19:06I never have tried to sell a gas pump.
19:07No?
19:08No.
19:09All of a sudden, I realized Jeff could be the classic junker.
19:12These guys buy, but they don't want to sell.
19:14Well, if I had this in my shop, I'd probably have, like, uh, close to $400, maybe.
19:18Yeah.
19:19So I gotta be at least half that, you know?
19:21Yeah.
19:22I offer $200 right off the bat just to get a reaction, but this guy doesn't say anything.
19:27If he can't put a price on his stuff, this is gonna be a really tough day.
19:31I don't know if I think about it.
19:32Yeah, let's look around a little bit.
19:35Why have you come to a conclusion that maybe you should sell some stuff?
19:38I know you're not too packed up, because look at all that.
19:40I think I better start now if I'm gonna get rid of any of it,
19:43or I might not even get rid of half of it by the time I get 60, 65.
19:48Hey, what's this right here?
19:49Uh, that's part of an old steel.
19:51Copper steel.
19:52This was called a pot steel, and it was used to make moonshine back in the day.
19:56So this is a steel that was from the hills around here.
19:59Yeah, that was from here.
19:59That's cool.
20:00I started collecting up local stuff early, early on.
20:03So anything I could find that was, um, history or signs.
20:07You know what?
20:08I'm the same way with the little town I live in.
20:10I'm the exact same way.
20:11Is this something you'd sell?
20:13Um.
20:21Probably not.
20:23I gotta find something you're not in love with.
20:26Let's keep on rockin'.
20:29How about in there?
20:30See anything you like?
20:36Whoa!
20:37That's a church steeple.
20:38My grandfather, he bought that for the church,
20:40and then when they replaced it, they gave it back to me.
20:42Is that for sale?
20:44Probably not.
20:45I'm starting to wonder why Jeff even called us.
20:47There's nothing here this guy can't live without.
20:50Were these made local?
20:51Probably.
20:52When he says local, I hear no.
20:54Ooh, bread.
20:55It came from a local store.
20:56The lady was a friend of mine.
20:57Friend of yours?
20:58Yeah.
20:59All right.
20:59I'm not even going to ask.
21:01How much you want for it?
21:05This guy was attached to anything from advertising to architectural stuff.
21:09$2.50 for the mailbox.
21:12I gotta hold on to that mailbox.
21:14A little bit longer.
21:15Jeff doesn't know how to sell because all he's done is buy stuff for all these years.
21:20As pickers, it's our job to help him get there.
21:22Have you noticed that sometimes if you hang on to stuff too long, you miss the boat?
21:26Yeah, that's true.
21:26Well, that and it deteriorates.
21:28All right, then it's not worth adding to anybody.
21:30Yep.
21:31Ooh, scale.
21:31There's a scale right there.
21:33Right there.
21:33Probably works.
21:34This is a really cool old novelty scale.
21:37You step on it, you get your weight, and you get your horoscope.
21:39Vintage scales are great finds.
21:54This is not local.
21:55I'm not really, really attached to it, but it is a pretty good piece, though.
21:58When Jeff says this scale is not from around here, I saw my opening.
22:02How much is this?
22:03Um, I never tried to sell one.
22:06What are you thinking?
22:06If this was nice, it'd be like $3.50.
22:09Mm-hmm.
22:10So, I'd probably do $100 on it.
22:14How about $150?
22:18$150 is a little high for this scale, but you know what?
22:21At least I got this guy negotiating.
22:23I'll come up a little bit, $110.
22:25How about $125?
22:27Hey, turn around and look at this place.
22:29Let's all just kind of take it in and see what's going on here.
22:33What was he just saying?
22:34He said he wanted to liquidate.
22:36That's not the right.
22:36So he gets, you know, because he's got too much stuff.
22:38And things are deteriorating.
22:41I mean, this has got about five years.
22:43All right, all right.
22:43I cannot read where it says $1.
22:44This is enough lecture.
22:47I think we've just worn out our welcome.
22:51Turn around and look at this place.
22:53Let's all just kind of take it in and see what's going on here.
22:57What was he just saying?
22:58He said he wanted to liquidate and he wanted to get, you know, because he's got too much stuff.
23:02And things are deteriorating.
23:05I mean, this has got about five years left before I cannot read where it says $1.
23:08This is enough lecture.
23:09Where are you at?
23:10I'm at $110.
23:11All right, we're going to do $110.
23:13All right.
23:13All right.
23:14We did it.
23:15Maybe all this guy needed was a little push.
23:20All right, where else can we look?
23:21Let's head around this way.
23:22I got a shed I want you to see.
23:24It's pretty tight.
23:24Yeah, there we go.
23:26Whoa.
23:32It's like a picker's playground.
23:34I mean, he's got stuff packed and you can just touch the ceiling.
23:37Who knows what's behind there?
23:38He's got the jungle ranch, man.
23:40Man.
23:41All right, I'm going in.
23:42Crawl on in there, you little honey badger.
23:46As a picker, I like to work for my money, man.
23:48I like to get down and dirty and dig.
23:50I don't let anything fall out, don't you?
23:52I don't even know how you get.
23:54Whoa.
23:54You bought it.
23:55You bought it, yeah.
23:57Oh, there is a tunnel this way, too.
24:01Ooh, Goodyear.
24:02I see it.
24:03Car.
24:04I see this really cool porcelain Goodyear sign.
24:07It's a local sign.
24:07It came right off the square there, a service station.
24:09They tore down to build a motel.
24:11These signs are the staple of my business.
24:13When I see this stuff, I got to pounce on it.
24:15Is this something you'd consider selling, though?
24:17Possibly, yeah.
24:18I can't believe Jeff is willing to sell something local.
24:21This pick is starting to turn around.
24:23How about 200?
24:26How about three?
24:27How about, I'll tell you what, I'll split it with you, 250.
24:32Well, okay, I'll do it.
24:34Want to do 250?
24:35250, please.
24:35All right.
24:35It was a little bit hard for me to let that sign go,
24:37but if I feel that I'm selling it to somebody who appreciates stuff as much as me
24:41and it's going to carry it on to something else,
24:43then I'm a little bit easier to get along with it.
24:46We'll get the ball rolling here.
24:47All right.
24:48What about this U-Haul clock?
24:50Looks like it's made in the 60s.
24:52How about 40?
24:5240 bucks.
24:53Okay.
24:54All right, we'll do it.
24:55What's the story on this propeller right here?
24:57I think it's from World War I.
24:58How much is it, five bucks?
24:59All right.
25:00All right.
25:01Once Jeff let go of something local, the floodgates were finally open.
25:04Whose house did it come out of?
25:07Came out of one around here.
25:09How about 20 bucks?
25:10All right, 20 bucks.
25:11All right.
25:12He has an awful lot of stuff here, and we're finally thinning it out a little bit.
25:15What's that light sign sign?
25:16That's that one that I think it says farm supply.
25:18Oh, farm supply.
25:19Okay.
25:19I mean, we live in the Midwest.
25:20We live on farms.
25:22People love stuff like this.
25:23How about 150?
25:24I can't do it for farm signs, but I can do a $100 bill on it.
25:28I think I'll pass.
25:29Take your pass.
25:30All right.
25:31Can't win them all.
25:32Hey, Jeff, what do you got on this?
25:34Air Force sign.
25:35Army on one side and Air Force on the other side.
25:37You do not find military porcelain signs, especially in this great a condition.
25:42This sign probably hung outside a recruiting office during the Korean War.
25:46I'm thinking about $300 on that.
25:48$300 on this?
25:50I'd do $300 on the sign back there and this.
25:53On the farm sign?
25:54Yep.
25:54That'd be $200 on this and $100 on the one back there.
25:57Okay.
25:58I can do that.
25:58$300?
25:59All right.
25:59We'll do it.
26:00Early porcelain military signs are very hard to find.
26:03And the harder to find, the more collectible.
26:06You got two of these.
26:08How about I sell you one of those?
26:10Okay.
26:11How much for this one?
26:13Royal crown.
26:14How about $150?
26:16Whoa!
26:17That's pretty neat, though.
26:19That's pretty neat.
26:19Look at that.
26:20It is neat.
26:21That's why I dug it out of here.
26:23But it's too much money.
26:24I mean, I can't make anything on it for that.
26:27I tell you what.
26:28How about we do a bundle situation?
26:31I'm thinking about the gas pump that I saw when I first came into this place.
26:35He couldn't put a number on it then.
26:36How about $150 for the sign and $150 for the gas pump?
26:50What are you thinking?
26:52Did we even talk about the price on that?
26:53I told you I was around two bills on it.
26:56So it would be $150 on the sign.
26:58I'm paying you what you want for the sign, the moon.
27:00Yeah.
27:00I mean, here I am on the stratosphere here.
27:02And then I'm only coming $50 off of the pump.
27:06Okay, well, I say we do $350.
27:14And then I'll do it.
27:16Let me think here.
27:17Now that we got him going, this guy's come full circle, and he's one tough negotiator.
27:22All right, I bet I'm $325.
27:25All right.
27:26$325?
27:27All right, my brother.
27:28All right.
27:29Working with Jeff today was very cool.
27:31We had a lot in common.
27:33We both love the history behind the item.
27:36Farm Supply.
27:37That's a good one.
27:38I got the recruitment and the farm sign for $300.
27:40I think I can get at least $850.
27:44All right, what do you got?
27:45Oh, yeah.
27:46There you go.
27:46There's a Goodyear.
27:47That's my side of the van.
27:48I got the Goodyear sign for $250.
27:50I'm going to ask $500.
27:56Did he get you?
27:58I got the gas pump for $175.
28:01I think I can get $425, which will probably go towards Frank's hospital bill.
28:06All right.
28:06Thank you so much.
28:07It was really nice having you guys here.
28:08I feel that Frank and Mike appreciate things as much as I do, and I let things go because
28:13I feel that it's going to a good place with them.
28:15See ya!
28:16See ya, guys.
28:18It's the kind of place I hate to leave.
28:27Frank and I are cruising around looking for a freestyle, but all I keep thinking about
28:31is that Hatfield-McCoy pick that Danny's been working on.
28:35Here, Danny's calling.
28:36Hey, Danny.
28:37You got the Hatfields-McCoy lead or what?
28:38You guys need to head to West Virginia now.
28:41You got it?
28:43Who is the most amazing woman in the history of all amazing women ever?
28:47You are incredible.
28:48What's the lead consist of?
28:49So, word on the street is that Devil Ann's Hatfield himself used to spend time in this
28:53general store.
28:54That's really cool.
28:56Devil Ann's Hatfield was at the center of all of this from the very beginning.
28:59The McCoys were convinced that he killed a member of their family, but he was never
29:02charged for it.
29:03So, this feud just blew up and got bigger and bigger, and it's just continued for decades.
29:08The store has been closed for years, and you guys will be the first pickers to get
29:11your hands dirty.
29:12That's all I'm going to tell you.
29:13You can find out the rest yourself.
29:15That's all you're going to tell us?
29:16I've got stuff to do.
29:17All right.
29:17I love you.
29:17Bye.
29:19Devil Ann's, here we come.
29:29Danielle is setting us up with an amazing opportunity.
29:32We could be the first pickers to get into this old general store right in the center of
29:36Hatfield and McCoy territory.
29:38This is huge.
29:39Are you going to be a Hatfield or a McCoy?
29:40I'd rather be a McCoy, because I think those guys were mellow people.
29:43They weren't like the other people.
29:44Yeah, because McCoys are the ones who gave up and moved.
29:47I would never give up.
29:49I'm not giving up on my side either, so just keep your stuff on your side.
29:52That's it.
29:53There it is.
29:54Grocery and hardware store.
29:54All these grocery and hardware store.
29:56That's it.
29:57Grab the flyer.
29:58You want a flyer?
29:59There you go.
30:00Good.
30:00I got my side.
30:01Here's your hat.
30:01All right.
30:01You know, we disagree at times, but we never let it affect our work.
30:04We're going into this pick calm, cool, and collected.
30:07Right?
30:08Right.
30:11It's open.
30:13Hello.
30:14Hello.
30:15How are you doing?
30:16Hi, I'm Mike.
30:16Hi, how are you?
30:17Good.
30:18Nice to meet you.
30:19Hi.
30:19Who's this?
30:20Hi, Mike.
30:20Are you Mike, too?
30:21That's easy to remember.
30:22We'll do a Mike, Frank.
30:23The whole time I'm thinking when we're standing on the front porch of this place is that Devil
30:28Lance Hatfield cast his shadow on this door many years ago.
30:34I'm still trying to get my hands on something that has Devil Lance's name on it.
30:38You've found Ledger's with his name in it before?
30:40Yeah.
30:40So Frank and I go full CSI on this pick, man.
30:48Here we go.
30:52Now, did this used to be like an old general store or something?
30:55So the people around here?
30:55Okay.
30:56So Goldie tells us this store opened up in the late 1800s, and they bought it in the
31:011980s.
31:01Hopefully, we can walk away with some rare Hatfield McCoy pieces.
31:05Can we look around a little bit?
31:06Yes.
31:06All right.
31:07Show us the way.
31:08Lead the way.
31:08Okay.
31:11Oh, wow.
31:11Old general store.
31:13Frank and I walk inside this place, and it's incredible.
31:16It's a time capsule.
31:18I've been in here about 25 years.
31:20And all this stuff was in here?
31:21Yes.
31:22A lot of this stuff was left over.
31:24When we bought the building, we just added a little paint.
31:26We didn't throw away anything.
31:28How'd you find out about this place?
31:29He brought it up around here.
31:31I was born and raised in this house.
31:33Well, when I was little, I always wanted the property.
31:36I said, if I ever get the money, I'm going to buy it.
31:38And I did.
31:41The woman here in this picture used to be the one that ran the store.
31:45This is Cissy Browning, and then that's her mother right there.
31:48Nancy Steele.
31:49It's exactly alike, don't they?
31:50And she's the niece of Devalance.
31:53Wow.
31:54That's cool.
32:10So this is a place that Devalance Hatfield would have frequented?
32:14Yeah, oh yeah.
32:14His name is in one of the ledgers.
32:16Can you show us the ledger?
32:17Yeah, I'd love to see that.
32:18This is what we put in all those miles to see.
32:21We're tracing the steps of one of the most infamous Hatfields.
32:24This is legendary.
32:25Cucumbers in at 305.
32:27Bacon, oatmeal.
32:2825 cents on corn.
32:30Back in the day, everybody bought on credit.
32:32So these ledgers were used to see who bought what, when and where.
32:36Nobody's ever buying any soap, do you know what I'm saying?
32:38I don't see that.
32:40I don't see that.
32:40They made their own.
32:41These store ledgers are a window into what was going on back in the day during the Hatfield and McCoy
32:47feud.
32:47Ooh, there's AK.
32:48AK Hatfield.
32:49It could be him right there.
32:51Devil Ants.
32:51I don't know.
32:52There's AB Hatfield.
32:54The Hatfields are just all over these books.
32:56So we're seeing a lot of Hatfields' names in this book.
32:58That totally makes sense.
33:00This is Hatfield territory.
33:01But if I could find something that talks about Devil Ants, this thing could be worth some money.
33:06What was his real name, Mark?
33:07Anderson.
33:08Anderson.
33:09So did anybody refer to him as Devil?
33:11The way I understand it, no.
33:27Did you guys ever have any relatives that ever knew him?
33:30My dad's dad, he sold him a boot shot.
33:32So he knew him personally?
33:34Yeah.
33:34Wow.
33:34He said he was a real fine killer, but he was spooky.
33:38Like, he's always looking back over his shoulder.
33:41He's afraid you'd shoot him.
33:42Oh, I bet.
33:43Well, with the history of it, yeah.
33:44Yeah.
33:45So have you, but you've found Ledger's with his name in it before?
33:48The older one is upstairs.
33:50He slept upstairs in the little warm bed.
33:52Oh, he did?
33:52So according to Mike and Goldie, not only did Devil Ants Hatfield shop in this store,
33:57he slept upstairs as well.
33:58We've got to check this out.
34:00The stairs are creaking.
34:02They're dirty.
34:03There's hay all over them.
34:04It's painted in oxblood red.
34:06We walk into the very back of this place, and there it is.
34:12Frank, you dare me?
34:14Get on in there.
34:16You're kind of like, you're kind of like.
34:19Watch out, dude.
34:20Whoa.
34:21Let me see here.
34:22Hard night?
34:22That'd be all right, wouldn't it?
34:24Yeah.
34:25This is where the man slept, right here.
34:26This isn't some museum where there's a purple velvet rope blocking me off.
34:30I'm actually able to roll around in history,
34:33but I'm still trying to find something with Devil Ant's name on it.
34:36There's the ledger.
34:38So Goldie tells us out of all these ledgers, one has Devil Ant's full name,
34:42not just A. Hatfield, his whole name spelled out.
34:45So Frank and I go full CSI on this pick, man.
34:53Here we go.
34:55Ant's Hatfield, 1906.
34:57Coffee, a broom.
34:58There you go.
34:59Starch, coffee, flour.
35:01This book doesn't just hold his name, but it holds his shopping list,
35:06his lifestyle, what he ate.
35:07You can even see the days that he came in there.
35:10Is this book something you would sell?
35:16Unconsiderate.
35:20How about 200 bucks?
35:25What about 250?
35:28This is a story that was heard across the world.
35:31I'm talking murder, mayhem, crazy stuff.
35:35And now I'm here in the area that it happened,
35:38and I'm holding a ledger with his name in it.
35:41It's making the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
35:44So you're at 250 on it?
35:46Mm-hmm.
35:50I'll take it for that.
35:52Thank you so much.
35:54This ledger here is a really cool artifact with so much history in it.
35:58I'm taking a chance, but I'm going to make sure I get it authenticated
36:01before I pass it on to somebody else.
36:03Here's a 1905, 1906.
36:05Okay, that's the same year as the summons I have.
36:09What kind of summons?
36:10For Devil Ants.
36:11For him to be, like, up here in court or something?
36:14This just keeps getting better and better.
36:16Mike scored those amazing ledgers.
36:18Now it's time for me to get into the action.
36:20It's downstairs.
36:21Let's leave the way.
36:22Let's go.
36:22All right, cool.
36:24Frank, you sure you don't want to lay in his bed?
36:26I'm good.
36:27The more I learn about the Hatfield and LaCoy's,
36:29the more amazed I am.
36:31Right here's the summons.
36:32Okay.
36:33This summons could be my chance at an item from the most famous family feud ever.
36:38Where'd you find that at?
36:39It was downstairs here somewhere, just in a palace junk.
36:43Can you take it out so I can look at it?
36:44Yeah.
36:45Today, I'm thanking the picking gods that Goldie had a good enough eye to rescue it from the junk heap.
36:50It's hard to read because the thing's in the middle here.
36:53It looks like if you took it out of the frame in Fall Park.
36:55It looks like that for sure.
36:56In December of 1905.
36:59God, that's a neat document.
37:00So this was a summons for him to go against the circuit court.
37:04So this would have been like a rest warrant type, huh?
37:06Yeah.
37:07What do you value this at?
37:09I mean, if you would sell it?
37:11$250.
37:12$250?
37:12I am really excited about this document.
37:14I can't tell for sure if it's double ants, but I'm willing to take a chance.
37:19How about $200?
37:23I'll thank it because I think y'all are finding a good home for it.
37:26We will find a good home for it.
37:28How about a handshake?
37:29How about a handshake?
37:30You got it.
37:31This summons has the potential to be one of the most historically significant items I've ever bought.
37:37This is an amazing place.
37:38There's just not that many places like this left in America.
37:40Especially any to do with the Hatfield and McCoys.
37:43That's a fact.
37:43Well, we're glad to show it to you.
37:45These items that we found here today are amazing.
37:47We come across history all the time, but this story is different.
37:51And standing in this store, that's the closest you're going to get to walking through history.
37:56Nice to meet you, partner.
37:58Thanks for having us.
37:59I believe Frank and Mike are happy with what they got.
38:01And we've really enjoyed it with them, too.
38:04I figured they'd be to a better use of what me and her would.
38:08Bye, Mike!
38:09See you, guys!
38:10Bye!
38:12I ended up coming across this ledger.
38:14It's got his name in here.
38:16And it's Hatfield.
38:17You know, there were several Anson Anderson Hatfields in the area at the time.
38:22A lot of people bring different items and say, these are related to the feud.
38:25And they're almost never related to the feud.
38:33Danny tells us to head over to the Chamber of Commerce in Williamson, West Virginia.
38:36We're going to talk to a guy named Bill Richardson.
38:39He's a local historian, and we're hoping he can tell us a little bit more about the feud
38:42and help us authenticate some of the items that we bought.
38:46Hello!
38:47Hey!
38:47Hey, are you Bill?
38:48Yeah.
38:49You talked to Danielle?
38:50Yeah.
38:50I work on community projects, and I'm an extension professor for West Virginia University.
38:55We came across a summons, stepped by to get it authenticated.
38:59Great.
38:59A lot of people bring different items and say, these are related to the feud.
39:02And they're almost never related to the feud.
39:05So you always have to take it with a grain of salt.
39:07Everybody's heard of the Hatfield and McCoys.
39:10I mean, it's just total American roots folklore.
39:12The story goes that the Hatfield and McCoy feud was started by the killing of a Civil War soldier,
39:18Asa Harmon McCoy.
39:19But Bill tells us it didn't really get heated until 10 years later.
39:22The hog trial is when things really began to get hot.
39:25You had Randall McCoy charging Floyd Hatfield, Devil Lance's first cousin and one of his best friends,
39:30of stealing his hog.
39:31And in those days, these were subsistence farmers.
39:33So you take the food off your table, that's like putting a gun to your head.
39:36And so when the Hatfields won, the hog trial, the McCoys felt like they had been cheated.
39:40And after that, you start having fights and gun battles, and things just happen one after another.
39:44Wow.
39:57Well, this is the summons here.
39:59Really, the issue here is this Anderson Hatfield, Devil Lance.
40:03You've got an item that was found at a place where he's known to be.
40:07I'm familiar with the store, and it was one of the few places to shop and get your mail in
40:11that area.
40:12You know, you can really tell that this Hatfield-McCoy story means a lot to Bill.
40:16This is his local folklore, and he wants to preserve it for generations and generations to come.
40:20I ended up coming across this ledger as well.
40:23It's got his name in here, Ants Hatfield.
40:27You know, there were several Ants and Anderson Hatfields in the area at the time.
40:31Bill said there was really no way to authenticate the ledger because there were so many Hatfields named Ants back
40:36then.
40:36So there's no way to know for certain if this is the Devil Lance Hatfields name in this book.
40:42And so that's part of your difficulty in authenticating.
40:45It's one thing to have an old document, but to tie it to a historical figure is very difficult.
40:50But when you look at all these Hatfields, this says Elliot Sr., so it's possible that that's Devil Lance's son.
40:55This is Floyd Hatfield, the guy who was accused of stealing the hog.
40:58His name is in here.
41:00Wow.
41:01That's a good piece.
41:01That is a good piece.
41:02Even though we're not sure that it is Devil Lance, Bill can still place a lot of the Hatfields in
41:07the ledger.
41:08We still think this is a great, significant historical piece.
41:10But I'm hoping for even better luck with the summons.
41:13So what do you think about this?
41:15Well, as you look at it, some of the other defendants here, there's a couple of steals.
41:19He was in business with some steals.
41:21Also, the plaintiff here is Logan Coal and Timber Association.
41:26So that begins to say that this was a business that was in the business of coal and timber rights.
41:31Devil Lance Hatfield was in the lumber industry.
41:33He was in that area during that time period.
41:35And this was a dispute over timber rights.
41:38All this stuff was adding up.
41:39It looks like it could definitely be Devil Lance.
41:42This is extremely unusual.
41:44Really?
41:44Well, I have yet to have somebody bring something to me that I was this sure it was the real
41:49thing.
41:50Wow.
41:51I knew I was taking a risk on buying the document, but it looks like the risk paid off and
41:55I couldn't be happier.
41:56It's a tremendous find.
41:57After looking at Bill's excitement when he sees these two items, I felt that this summons should stay here.
42:02Sometimes taking things out of their element is not where it's supposed to be.
42:06So you would be interested in this summons?
42:08If it's something that I can afford, I'm interested in keeping this here for our history.
42:12Well, we can completely understand the importance of that.
42:14As far as I'm concerned, I think it needs to stay here in the region so people can see it.
42:18So I'll tell you what, Bill.
42:20I paid $200 for this.
42:24How would $300 be?
42:27You know, normally me and Mike try to at least double our money.
42:30But in this case, preserving America's history is more important.
42:38I think I could do that.
42:39We could do it, too.
42:40Good deal.
42:41All right.
42:41It comes around full circle.
42:43Good deal.
42:44I'm glad it stays here.
42:46Well, I know you guys could make more money on this, you know, putting it in an auction or something
42:50like that.
42:50Sometimes it's not all about money.
42:51It was thrilling for Mike and Frank to bring this document in.
42:54There's so few opportunities to get a real document from this story.
42:58And the fact that they were willing to let us have it here, that was just tremendous.
43:02We had the best experience of all, and that was digging it up.
43:05Exactly.
43:05So this connects the dots.
43:07Well, you got to the pick.
43:07Well, come on, let me get you guys paid.
43:08Okay.
43:09As pickers, it's an honor to find something so rare.
43:13That's what we're constantly trying to do.
43:15And I'm walking away with a ledger.
43:17It's an amazing piece of the story.
43:22Frank, here's the situation.
43:24This is my side of the van right now.
43:25When I get in here, I clean my stuff up, you know what I'm saying?
43:28What is this?
43:28How old is that?
43:29That's not mine.
43:30This fruit's not yours.
43:31I don't need fruit.
43:32Okay.
43:32I'm going to give you my flashlight.
43:33You're making a big deal out of them.
43:35That's what I'm saying.
43:35What about the antacids?
43:36Is that yours?
43:37That's mine.
43:37Okay.
43:37Well, what about the Hanson brothers over here?
43:39This is yours.
43:40Are you really going to throw mbop into this argument?
43:42I don't like the vote.
43:43What happened last time you did that, don't you?
43:44You played it for five hours straight.
43:45You got mbopped.
43:46Here.
43:47Here's the situation.
43:47See this?
43:49Yeah!
43:50Really, Mike?
43:51See that?
43:52Okay.
43:52That's what I'm saying.
43:53That's fine.
43:53Don't touch my stuff.
43:55Whatever.
43:55Whatever.
