00:00Decoys, boats.
00:01I feel at home, man.
00:03Got all the roosters crowing.
00:04I have one rooster.
00:06And I call him Rooster.
00:08Wow, look at that.
00:09I see this really cool collection of Indian artifacts and tools.
00:13What would you have to have for it if you were to sell it?
00:15Give me five.
00:16We can't afford to lose 500 bucks.
00:18These artifacts better pay off.
00:21Oh my God, look at all these warehouses.
00:23This is all World War II.
00:25I'm digging around and I find something totally unique.
00:28U.S. Marines baseball uniforms.
00:32How much would you want for the whole box?
00:34This is a rare opportunity and I'm not leaving without these.
00:37Von Dutch.
00:38VW motorcycle.
00:39Dude, this could be the infamous XAVW.
00:42He only made one.
00:43He made it in the 60s.
00:44It came out in all the magazines.
00:46This is my holy grail.
00:47Tracking down this bike is now our mission.
00:50Whatever you're doing, I want you to stop.
00:51Keep your eyeballs peeled, son.
00:53This is something that Von Dutch created from the dark depths of his mind.
00:57This is a bike of a lifetime.
01:01I'm Mike Wolfe.
01:02And I'm Frank Fretz.
01:04And we're Pickers.
01:06We travel the back roads of America looking to buy rusty gold.
01:12We make a living telling the history of America one piece at a time.
01:24We're cruising the back roads in North Carolina.
01:26This is exactly the time of year.
01:28We'd love to come down here.
01:29We've had some mega scores in the past.
01:30Hopefully, we can keep that streak going.
01:32Everybody down here is like a southern gentleman.
01:34I know.
01:34You need to learn from that.
01:36The southern gentleman thing.
01:37I could be southern gentleman.
01:38The southern gentleman.
01:38I hold the door.
01:39Have you seen yourself eat fried chicken?
01:41I hold the door.
01:42I mean, it's like watching Wild Kingdom, dude.
01:44I don't even like fried chicken that much.
01:45Bones flying everything.
01:46Wait, I just got a message.
01:48What is it, Danielle or something?
01:50Yeah, Mike.
01:51It's Joe Rainbow, Tennessee.
01:53Remember Joe Rainbow?
01:54Joe Rainbow.
01:55I remember him well.
01:56He had some motorcycle parts.
01:57Danielle said you are the sweetest man in Tennessee.
02:00Yeah, we got the loft.
02:01All right.
02:02We gonna look.
02:03All of a sudden, he gives me a call and says, hey, I was at a yard sale and I
02:08saw a motorcycle.
02:09And it wasn't just any motorcycle.
02:10It was a 1942 Harley frame.
02:13And it's got a Volkswagen motor in it.
02:16And it said Von Dutch on it.
02:18Von Dutch.
02:19Dutch.
02:20Von Dutch.
02:20VW Motorcycle.
02:22If pinstripers had a Mount Rushmore, Von Dutch's face would be on it.
02:27Von Dutch was the Picasso of pinstriping cars and then motorcycles.
02:31When he first started out, he was a motorcycle mechanic.
02:34But then later on, he set the bar for other pinstripers to come.
02:52He made it in the 60s.
02:55It came out in all the magazines.
02:56Dude, this could be the infamous XAVW.
02:59Von Dutch might have made other custom motorcycles, but he only made one XAVW.
03:04He made this bike and then it disappeared.
03:07Tracking down this bike is now our mission.
03:10Joe didn't leave us good directions.
03:12So now it's Danielle's job to get us to the property.
03:15We need to call Danielle and have her dig into this.
03:18This is a bike of a lifetime.
03:23Yes, Mike Wolf, what can I do for you?
03:25Whatever you're doing, I want you to stop.
03:27Remember that guy we picked, Joe Rainbolt?
03:29Yeah.
03:29He called and left a message on my machine saying that he went to a tag sale and there was
03:35a woman that had a Von Dutch motorcycle in her barn.
03:40Oh, really?
03:41All I know is you need to call Joe Rainbolt right away and find out where the heck he was
03:46talking about.
03:47Okay.
03:47Hold on.
03:48Hold on.
03:48While I have you on the phone, I have a lead for you, too.
03:51Yeah.
03:51This side is pretty rad.
03:52Her name's Betty.
03:53Her dad used to own a military surplus store.
03:56She has all this U.S. military surplus stuff from her dad.
03:59That sounds cool.
04:00Sounds cool.
04:01So this guy was buying it bulk.
04:02He had over 500,000 World War II hand grenade canisters.
04:06Sounds cool, man.
04:07Alright, so you got what you need.
04:08Any time you can get us inside on a rainy day.
04:10Hey, look, I gotta go.
04:11People are walking in right now.
04:12Bye.
04:13Bye, Frankie.
04:13Bye, Mike.
04:14Bye.
04:15Danielle says this spot has a lot of World War II stuff.
04:18Not only is this stuff becoming hot, it's getting harder and harder to find.
04:24Alright, this is it.
04:25It's coming out.
04:25I can see it on GPS.
04:26Looking like it's right up there.
04:28This is it right up here.
04:28Oh, my God.
04:29Look at all these warehouses.
04:30Oh, yeah.
04:31There's not much stuff outside, but I mean, she's got a huge warehouse area, so she's got
04:36to have some stuff in here.
04:37You know what looks really good about this?
04:38It's because...
04:39It's inside.
04:40Yeah.
04:41Whew.
04:43This place is huge, man.
04:49Hello.
04:50Oh, hey.
04:51Hey.
04:52Hey, you Betty?
04:53Yeah.
04:53I'm Mike.
04:54Hey, Mike.
04:55Nice to meet you.
04:55How are you?
04:56Hi, Betty.
04:56I'm Frank.
04:57Hey, Frank.
04:57Nice to meet you.
04:59Here's a list of the things we're looking for.
05:00I know you talked to Danielle on the phone, and she kind of went over some stuff.
05:04Right away, I look around, and there is tons of stuff everywhere.
05:07Betty's got this place filled to the brim.
05:09So what do you got going on?
05:10This is your dad's stuff?
05:11Yeah, my dad's business.
05:12My dad went into the military, and then he started buying and selling military surplus
05:18after World War II.
05:20He bought an airplane hanger, went to all the military bases, and then built building
05:25after building after building, and filled...
05:27To put it in.
05:28...with military surplus.
05:29The reason I'm selling now, 10 years after his death, is the taxes have gone up, and it's
05:35time to get the buildings empty.
05:37Danielle said you helped him do all this?
05:39Yeah, we unloaded the trucks and the trailers.
05:41My dad called us boys, and he treated us like we were in the military.
05:45How many brothers and sisters do you have?
05:47Two sisters and a brother, and after school, he would be waiting for us.
05:50He would go, okay, boys, get your work clothes on.
05:53My first impression of Betty is that she probably does more stuff by 10 a.m.
05:58than most people do all day.
05:59It was hard work.
06:00Well, hey, we're willing to work, too.
06:01Okay, let's go.
06:02We did dig through some stuff.
06:03Okay.
06:04What do you got?
06:05What's the reason here?
06:06Well, my dad was in the salvage business also.
06:08We would tear down buildings.
06:10Wow, look at this, man.
06:12I came in 10 years ago, and we've been working for 10 years to organize this.
06:16Really?
06:17Yeah.
06:17We're going to be here for a while.
06:19One thing I really liked about Betty was she did not mind getting her hands dirty.
06:23I've got a lot of these, and they're really heavy, but they're really neat.
06:26I mean, this lady is a hard worker.
06:28These lockers are cool.
06:30Yeah, these came out of a school.
06:32My dad actually tore some dorms down.
06:35These lockers are amazing.
06:36They have a very cool look.
06:38They produce these lockers all the time now, but our job as pickers is to find the real
06:43deal.
06:44Okay, what do you get for, like, here's a box.
06:45Right.
06:46There's no stand on it.
06:47Like, what would you get for a box and a stand?
06:49These cabinets each have 10 lockers in them.
06:51There's three of them total, but I'm only interested in one because I've only got so much space in
06:56the van.
07:08I'll take one of the boxes with the lockers and one of the stands for 50 bucks.
07:14Okay.
07:14Good deal.
07:15Good deal.
07:15All right, man.
07:17Anybody that wants something clever and unique to store an item is going to love these lockers.
07:22What else you got here?
07:25Right away, I can see me and Mike have got our work cut out for us.
07:28See anything, Frankie?
07:30No.
07:30I mean, there's architectural stuff, machinery, parts.
07:33Bleh.
07:34Who knows what else she has?
07:38Ooh, what's this?
07:41So I pick up these three thermometers.
07:43How about these here?
07:45Yeah, what are they?
07:45Thermometers?
07:46Thermometers, what they did was they probably went and they bolted down inside into some
07:51type of machine and then somebody read, you know, how hot the machine was getting.
07:56These thermometers are relics of days gone by.
07:59These are from a time when the industrial revolution was in full swing and American manufacturing
08:04was booming.
08:05Those days are gone now, but I'd like to bring these instruments back so people can enjoy them.
08:21I'm going to shoot the number for you so I don't have to make you think.
08:23$50 for the three.
08:25I think that's a deal.
08:26Is that a deal?
08:27I think that's a deal.
08:28You got it.
08:28Okay.
08:29All right.
08:30One of the things I got really excited about was Betty was ready to sell.
08:33That's music to my ears.
08:35So when's the last time your dad actually bought anything?
08:38He came out every day up until 94 years old.
08:42Really?
08:42Yeah, right up to the end.
08:44He came out here every day and worked.
08:46He sounds like a hell of a guy.
08:47He loved this place.
08:48My dad loved this business.
08:50He actually did not even like to change money.
08:52He would rather trade for an item.
08:55So the old barter system was his favorite way to go.
08:58Here's a great story.
09:00When he would tear down buildings and there were brick, we cleaned the brick.
09:04In order.
09:04And he sold the brick, sent four kids to college, and then bought us all houses.
09:10All on bricks?
09:11From the bricks we cleaned as kids.
09:14Betty is amazing.
09:15I mean, she has given her whole history on her father's collection.
09:17And you can tell, she's enjoying herself today.
09:20The most interesting building's up here.
09:23Ooh.
09:24Great.
09:26This is a cool pick because it's kind of an A to Z smorgasbord of things.
09:30Oh, wow.
09:34Look at this.
09:35I see this nice little bar.
09:37Is this something you'd sell?
09:38Make me an offer.
09:40This is a great piece because it's not too big.
09:43This kind of bar could fit in almost anybody's little rec room, man cave, out there in their garage, something
09:48like that.
09:48I had to have it.
09:59How about 75?
10:02Mmm.
10:05How about 100?
10:07The bar is a really cool item.
10:09It looks like it's handmade.
10:10It probably came out of the 1960s.
10:12It doesn't have a lot of age, but it's got great character.
10:15How about 85?
10:18Oh, 85 bucks.
10:20How much room you'll have?
10:24Okay, I'll do it.
10:2685?
10:26Yep.
10:27You got a deal.
10:27Okay.
10:28All right.
10:28All right.
10:28We're digging around Betty's and I'm finding a lot of stuff that I want to buy.
10:32How much you want for this?
10:33This little boat lamp.
10:3550 bucks.
10:36I'm thinking more like 20 bucks.
10:3835.
10:40All right.
10:40I'm your guy.
10:40How much on the Coca-Cola bottles?
10:4210 cents a piece.
10:44Round it off.
10:44I'd go more than that.
10:45Seven bucks.
10:47Come on.
10:47How much for the deer head?
10:4950 bucks.
10:50About 25 bucks.
10:51Okay, done.
10:52Frank, check this out.
10:53What?
10:54Oh, yeah.
10:55Look at these.
10:56New old stock.
10:57Cast iron toothbrush holders.
10:59These toothbrush holders are really cool.
11:01They're in great shape.
11:02They've got the original white paint.
11:03How many you got there?
11:04Like 800?
11:0515 of them.
11:07They probably came from a military band.
11:09They're military.
11:10Oh, yeah.
11:11Look at these.
11:12Surplus toilet paper roll.
11:15Pass.
11:15Actually, I need that.
11:17Here you go.
11:19You know, it's funny.
11:20You're not interested in anything at all,
11:22and then when somebody else is interested,
11:23it makes it a little more interesting to you.
11:26What are you thinking on these?
11:28Five bucks.
11:29Me and Frank sell to a lot of architectural salvage places,
11:32and when someone's redoing a house, redoing a room,
11:35this is that perfect piece of gingerbread that makes it stand out.
11:39How about two bucks a piece if I buy them all?
11:4130 bucks.
11:42And will you throw in some toilet paper rolls?
11:46They match, too, don't they?
11:48Somehow that's going to be a Christmas present for me or something.
11:50I can feel it.
11:51Done.
11:51Sweet.
11:52I'll throw in one for you, one for Frank.
11:54All right.
11:55Now I can cross Frank off my Christmas list.
12:00Mike and I have been digging around for a little while,
12:02and we found some interesting items.
12:04But we came here for the World War II stuff,
12:06and you know what?
12:07So far, I haven't seen any quality pieces.
12:09Danielle, Zed, you had, what was it?
12:11500,000 hand grenade canisters?
12:13Yeah.
12:13500,000.
12:15I mean, that's an insane number.
12:17I can't imagine moving, sorting, trying to sell all that stuff.
12:20This is the piece stiller, isn't it?
12:25Wow.
12:26500,000 hand grenade canisters.
12:29Dang.
12:30Whoa.
12:30This is hand grenade right here.
12:32Yeah.
12:34So that's what they are.
12:36They're just these little...
12:36Yeah, that they shipped hand grenades in.
12:39There's nothing in them.
12:40They make great shipping containers.
12:42Oh, yeah.
12:43For the right little thing.
12:44You're right.
12:44This is kind of a letdown.
12:45Well, let's keep on trucking.
12:50I'm in a warehouse full of military surplus.
12:53Dang.
12:53But we really haven't found anything substantial yet to make the trip worthwhile.
12:58Keep plugging along here.
13:02Oh, my God.
13:04Hey, come on up here.
13:07What do you find in my...
13:08It's just smoking.
13:10If this is the XAVW, then this is the holy grail.
13:14This is Danielle.
13:14He's having a meltdown.
13:16What do you know about the bike?
13:18I have some kind of edgy directions.
13:20Yeah, this is off the beaten track.
13:21There's not much to the property here.
13:23I see some chickens.
13:24I see some pigs.
13:25No bike.
13:26Hello!
13:29And my...
13:30This is smoking.
13:31I'm digging around, and I find something totally unique.
13:34U.S. Marines baseball uniforms.
13:37Holy moly.
13:38Let me see.
13:39Here's some pants.
13:40These things are wool.
13:42They're early, and they're great crossover piece.
13:44It's because this is U.S. military from World War II,
13:47and it's sports memorabilia.
13:50These are two amazing things.
13:52This whole box is full of them.
13:54Oh, wow.
13:54It's amazing to find so many uniforms together.
13:57Some aren't in great shape,
13:59but there's at least four that are in really good shape,
14:01and I haven't even gone through the whole box yet.
14:03How much would you want for the whole box?
14:06What do you think?
14:07Um, how about for all of it, 200 bucks.
14:12These uniforms meant a lot to me personally,
14:14because of what they stand for.
14:15I can see American servicemen during their downtime
14:18finding that little piece of solace,
14:20that little piece of mind,
14:21and that little piece of home
14:23that they brought from America.
14:24And the uniforms embody that.
14:38So I'm at two bills.
14:40Okay.
14:41Where are you at?
14:42250.
14:43I am never going to find a complete lot
14:45of World War II sports uniforms again.
14:48How about two and a quarter?
14:51Oh, wow.
14:53When's the last time you had somebody here looking at this stuff?
14:56Never.
14:56It's time to sell.
14:57If I don't buy this today,
14:58this stuff is just going to sit up here,
15:00out of the public eye,
15:02out of circulation,
15:03and that would be a crime.
15:06Okay, you got it.
15:07So two and a quarter?
15:08I think so.
15:09We got a deal?
15:09Okay, let's do it.
15:10All right, thanks, honey.
15:11All right, you're going to help me get this down, right?
15:12No.
15:15Frank.
15:16These jerseys are super cool.
15:18They're the last thing I expected to find on this pick today.
15:21Here, catch this.
15:23I shelled out $225 for all the World War II baseball uniforms.
15:28The ones that are complete, I think I can get $200 a piece for.
15:32One, two, three.
15:35We're trying to keep up with Betty.
15:37The wooden bar cost me $85.
15:39I think I can get at least $230.
15:43Okay, push.
15:45I paid $50 for the block of lockers.
15:47I'm going to ask $200.
15:52Have you got the toilet paper holders?
15:55Yeah, we got everything.
15:56Do you need a job?
15:57This girl's awesome.
15:58I know.
15:59At first, this pick had us worried.
16:01I mean, we weren't finding the big-ticket World War II items.
16:03But in our business,
16:04it doesn't matter how big the item is,
16:06it all adds up at the end.
16:08There's somebody for everything in here.
16:10I know.
16:10Don't leave me.
16:11All right.
16:12Thanks for your hospitality.
16:12Catch you on the flip side.
16:13See you, baby.
16:14All right.
16:14Thanks, girl.
16:15All right.
16:15I think Mike and Frank are a good team.
16:17I think they have the ability to see the beauty in dusty, rusty metal.
16:25See you, baby.
16:26See you, baby.
16:28See you, baby.
16:34What's wrong?
16:35You seem kind of sluggish.
16:36Craig, I didn't sleep at all last night.
16:38Why?
16:38I slept great because I'm thinking about this bike.
16:40The XAVW is a legendary bike.
16:43Von Dutch took a Volkswagen motor and stuck it in a 1942 Harley XA frame.
16:49You don't understand what this bike is, dude.
16:51It could be the infamous XAVW.
16:54The amazing thing about this bike is that it's one of a kind.
16:58And it was actually widely documented in all the motorcycle magazines back in the 60s.
17:02Am I the only one that's riding this bus?
17:05All right.
17:05Well, I'll tell you what.
17:06Let me call Danielle and see if she's got any info.
17:10See if there's any movement on it.
17:12See if she's got any info on it here.
17:13If this is the XAVW, then this is the Holy Grail.
17:16This is it.
17:17Danielle?
17:17Yes.
17:19He's having a meltdown.
17:21What do you know about the bike?
17:23Is there any movement?
17:24I'm working on the bike.
17:25I will have information to you.
17:27As soon as I know, you will know.
17:29Danny, I'm sure I don't need to tell you to pull all the stops out on this.
17:32But the longer I stay on the phone with you, the more time I have away from you.
17:36Okay, see I called.
17:37So what I'm going to do is in the meantime, I'm going to give you guys a lead.
17:40Okay.
17:41She's got a lead.
17:41Hit us.
17:43All right.
17:43So there's a gentleman named Dale Farnham, and he owns a junkyard.
17:46And the cool thing is he's made this really cool place for all of the kids in the neighborhood
17:50to hang out and just kind of have a drug-free environment.
17:53It's a place that's safe for them.
17:55So he's giving back to the community of some way.
17:57Danielle tells us this guy's been in the junk business for decades.
18:00And over all that time, he's collected a lot of great things that he's interested in selling for his charity.
18:05Send us a coordinates.
18:06Thanks for the lead.
18:07I'll let you know how it works out.
18:08I'll work on this.
18:09You guys work on that.
18:10And I'll be back with you as soon as I know.
18:12Bye.
18:13Bye.
18:18This place has got to be coming up here, man.
18:19This place is around us.
18:20Yeah, this is it right here.
18:21There it is.
18:22Oh, this has got to be it.
18:23Model T out front.
18:23Model A's.
18:24This place looks good.
18:25Hey, if the guy's got all these rat rods and stuff.
18:28Yeah, he's probably going to have some cool stuff here.
18:30All right.
18:31Man, it's hot here.
18:33Danielle said this place was going to be a junkyard.
18:35Hello!
18:35But it didn't look like a junkyard to me.
18:37He had some really cool old crust-erations.
18:40Not restorations, but crust-erations.
18:43This guy was barely cleaning stuff up and getting it running.
18:45This looks like our kind of place.
18:47What do you think?
18:48Hey, you Dale?
18:49Hey.
18:50What's up?
18:50Hey, I'm Mike.
18:51Nice to meet you.
18:51Yeah.
18:52How you doing?
18:52Hey, Dale.
18:53How you doing?
18:53Can I help?
18:54Yes, you're the one Miss Danielle called about.
18:56Yeah, yeah, yeah.
18:57Hey.
18:58Right when we walked in the door, I'm seeing all this same stuff that we love.
19:01Oh.
19:01Me and Frank are both into cars, man.
19:02We're transportation people, you know.
19:04I was born and raised here in North Carolina, and I'm proud to run this yard.
19:08It's a scrap yard.
19:09Well, Dale, here's kind of a little list.
19:11I like owning it because I get to deal with so many people, and I never know what people
19:16bring them to scrap.
19:17These are some of the things that me and Mike buy.
19:19I mean, it's just kind of jogging memory a little bit, you know.
19:22I mean, all the way from decoys, boats, jukeboxes, all kinds of stuff like that.
19:26Yeah.
19:27Oh, yeah.
19:28Well.
19:29I feel at home, man.
19:30Got all the roosters crowing.
19:32I have one chicken, one rooster, and I call him rooster.
19:36Believe it or not, they guard my place for me, you know.
19:39And if someone comes in here at night, those roosters let me know.
19:43Let's go through here.
19:44We'll start in here.
19:46All right.
19:46From my experience in the past dealing with scrappers and junkers, a lot of these guys
19:51are really smart and they've got great eyes.
19:53More cars.
19:54Right there, man.
19:55When someone comes in with something of value, they sort through it.
19:58They don't scrap it.
20:00This place is awesome, man.
20:01And Dale's place is no exception.
20:06Uh-oh.
20:07Dude.
20:08All of a sudden, I come across some toys in a box.
20:11He had a lot of reproduction motorcycles, but inside all those reproductions was one real
20:15motorcycle toy.
20:15Dale, how much for this little toy?
20:17It's a 1920s Champion motorcycle.
20:20They were made in Geneva, Ohio.
20:22You know, it was an actual hardware store.
20:23They were called Champions.
20:24They started making all kinds of toys.
20:26It's a cast iron toy.
20:27It was in great condition.
20:28I wanted to buy it.
20:41Now, you've got some other cast irons in here, but they're reproductions.
20:45You can tell the reproductions because of the wheels on them.
20:48It's got cast iron wheels instead of rubber ones.
20:50Mm-hmm.
20:50Reproduction toys often have cast iron wheels on them.
20:53This one has the rubber wheels on it, so I know it's the real deal.
20:56I made it on about $20.
20:58I love old toys like this.
21:00They were built to last.
21:01Not like the stuff they produce today.
21:03Let's say $25.
21:08I'll do $25.
21:09You got it.
21:10All right.
21:11It's a small toy, but a great piece.
21:13Where to next, Dale?
21:15You know, Dale is a real mild-mannered guy.
21:17You know, he talks slow, talked calmly.
21:19That's my watchdog.
21:20That's Fluffy.
21:21I've seen some pretty mean junkyard dogs.
21:23I don't know if Fluffy fits in that category.
21:26What's the project you got going on with the kids?
21:28Oh, well, I had got my life messed up years ago, and now I try to help all the kids
21:34and
21:35the people in the neighborhood because I didn't want to see them go where I've been.
21:38It turns out that Dale was on the wrong side of the law in the past.
21:42Now he runs a mentoring program where he teaches kids to stay out of trouble and teaches them
21:47how to work on cars.
21:48It's an awesome win-win situation.
21:50I appreciate you telling us about that because now you're making a difference, you know?
21:53Part of the reason Dale called us today was to help raise money for his cause.
21:57That's where all the good stuff is.
21:59There's some stuff in here.
22:00This is the pirate's treasures, Mike.
22:01I see that.
22:02There's different things in here.
22:03When you're on a pick like this, it's like you're in a coal mine.
22:06Ooh.
22:07Ooh, yeah.
22:07So this is stuff that people brought in to scrap, too?
22:10Yeah.
22:10You're digging through all that coal to find that diamond.
22:13Ooh.
22:14What's this?
22:14This thing has got some style, man.
22:16All the dials on it for a cut glass like jewels.
22:19So it's off a boat, I'm guessing, because on the screen here, the screen covers have anchors
22:23on it.
22:24It's an unusual maritime piece.
22:26I want it.
22:31Yeah.
22:38Yeah.
22:49Yeah.
22:49I mean, this thing's pretty fancy, man.
22:51Yeah.
22:51The phone has a label that says it was manufactured in 1951 by the Automatic Electric Company.
22:57This is what's known as a Type D phone.
22:59Type D phones were used on battleships and aircraft carriers.
23:02They were also known as the Admiral's phone.
23:15What do you want for something like this?
23:18Make me an offer.
23:19How about a hundred for the phone?
23:25This thing has got some style, man.
23:27All the dials on it that light up are all cut glass like jewels.
23:31I mean, it's an unusual maritime piece.
23:33I want it.
23:34How about a hundred and thirty?
23:38I'll tell you what.
23:38A hundred thirty bucks?
23:40I don't have a problem with that.
23:41It's yours.
23:41All right.
23:42This is a win-win situation.
23:44All right, Dale, what about this bicycle over here?
23:46It's like a little sidewalk bicycle.
23:48It's probably from the 1920s or 30s.
23:50It's missing the front fender and the back fender, but it still has the head badge,
23:54which is really great because you hardly ever find those out there.
23:57What'd you have to have for something like that?
24:00Oh, 60 bucks.
24:02We're buying for charity, but we still have to respect our bottom line.
24:06I'd probably do 40 on it.
24:08That'd be where I'd be.
24:1240?
24:13All right.
24:13We'll do it.
24:14Frankie.
24:14I mean, I can't ride it.
24:15Yeah.
24:16I don't think I can.
24:17I don't think I can either.
24:18It's a great little bike.
24:20All right, come on, Fluff.
24:21Let's hit it.
24:21Walking through the property with Dale, it was very clear that junk runs through his veins,
24:26man.
24:26I'm talking grease and oil.
24:28Another car.
24:29Uh-oh.
24:30I mean, there's junk everywhere.
24:32Frankie.
24:33Anything, Frankie?
24:34Uh-oh.
24:37There you go.
24:38Look at that.
24:39I'm staring at this awesome World War II bomber jacket.
24:42Dale, what about this coat?
24:43This is what the military classifies as an extreme cold weather jacket.
24:47This is what pilots wore when they were flying at extremely high altitude.
25:03Is this something you'd sell?
25:05You're making a good offer.
25:07This is a nice jacket.
25:08It's made out of sheepskin or lambskin.
25:11You can't walk into a store today and find anything this cool, this quality.
25:15How about 200 bucks?
25:18I'll say three.
25:19300 bucks?
25:20The trick with these coats is the condition of the leather, and this one is in decent shape.
25:25It's a really cool piece.
25:27How about 250?
25:30Okay, it looks like you bought your coat.
25:32250?
25:33250.
25:33All right, thanks, man.
25:35I love it.
25:36We're having a good pick with Dale.
25:37Money's exchanging hands.
25:39He invites us into the house, and his collection just keeps on going.
25:42I got something I want you to take a look at.
25:44All right.
25:45I can't imagine what he's got to show us.
25:47Let's check this way around.
25:49Wow, look at that.
25:51Oh, Indian artifacts.
25:52This looks like a really cool collection of Indian arrowheads, artifacts, and tools.
25:57Oh, yeah.
25:58This is a really big collection.
26:00I can tell somebody spent a lot of time putting this together.
26:02And I can look at some of these pieces and tell there's some real age on them.
26:06Yeah, these are the scrapers.
26:07This is what they scraped with.
26:09Scraped the hides.
26:10Mm-hmm.
26:10These are actual arrows here.
26:12I know a little bit about Indian artifacts.
26:14As a kid, we used to pick them out of the cornfields and stuff.
26:17But I've never come across stuff like this.
26:19Where'd you get a lot of this stuff, Dale?
26:21A friend of mine, it was kind of like an inheritance to them, you know.
26:25And she had nobody to pass it on to.
26:28So she told me, do eat it what you wish.
26:31And I figured that if I can move it, I would give her back some money.
26:36Collections like this can be very valuable.
26:38But you know, I just don't know enough about it.
26:40So if I buy it, I'm going to be taking a gamble.
26:42What would you have to have for it if you were to sell it?
26:44Make me an offer.
26:45From a business standpoint, it's hard to pass up collections.
26:49When somebody's already spent all the time and energy putting it all in one place, it's hard to resist.
26:53How about $300 bucks?
26:56How about $650?
27:00Oh, you know, I'd take a little chance on it.
27:03How about $400?
27:06All right, I wanted a $650. Give me $5.
27:15Sold, right?
27:16You got a deal.
27:17Thanks, partner. I appreciate it.
27:19It's a lot of stuff.
27:19Today was a great day because Dale was a great guy.
27:22He was a kind person.
27:24And what he does for kids is fantastic.
27:26Come on, Flash.
27:27Thanks for showing us around, man.
27:29I took a shot with the Native American artifacts.
27:31I paid $500 for them.
27:33I don't know what they're worth.
27:34I'm going to get them appraised.
27:37I love this coat.
27:39I paid $250 for the World War II bomber jacket.
27:42I'm going to ask $500 bucks.
27:44All right, be super careful on this.
27:46All right, I got you.
27:46I paid $25 for the Champion motorcycle toy.
27:50I think it's worth about $50.
27:53All right, man.
27:54Keep on keeping on, brother.
27:56Thanks, sir.
27:57Thanks for everything.
27:58It's not every day that you meet somebody like Dale.
28:01This guy is reaching past himself into his community.
28:04Hopefully, today, me and Frankie were able to help him out.
28:07See you later, Dale.
28:08I see now, looking back over my life, it's the little things that matter.
28:13Even chickens can be a blessing to a person, you know.
28:16Sit down.
28:17Hey, goodbye now.
28:21What do you think?
28:23There's several things that factor into the price.
28:26Of course, the quality.
28:27Right.
28:27The condition.
28:28Disappoint.
28:29It's got a little damage on the ear.
28:31Frank's got a lot riding on this purchase.
28:33What do you think the whole collection's worth?
28:34I'd say somewhere.
28:44Hi, can I speak with Elizabeth, please?
28:46Can you please tell me, did you by any chance have a Von Dutch motorcycle for sale?
28:50So, apparently, an old friend of Mike's, Joe Rainbolt, was at a yard sale
28:54and saw a really rare, historic bike that Mike has to have right now.
29:00I hear you know a lot about motorcycles, and you recently had a yard sale.
29:04I don't have a phone number, I don't have an address, but I have Joe Rainbolt's information.
29:08But he's not answering his calls.
29:10Joe, hi, Danielle Colby here again.
29:12I've called all of Joe's friends that I know.
29:14Hi, can I talk to your mommy, please?
29:16I look like a psycho trying to hunt down this bike.
29:18Okay, well, thank you.
29:20I will find it before anyone else does.
29:28Okay, so here's the big deal.
29:30I took a chance.
29:31Oh, you did take a chance.
29:33On the arrowheads.
29:33We're still waiting for the directions from Danielle for this Von Dutch bike.
29:37So, in the meantime, we're going to swing in and see what these arrowheads are worth.
29:40Easy with that stuff.
29:40I'll be careful.
29:41Careful, because these are good.
29:43They're out the paper.
29:44Let me get the door for you.
29:45Frank's got a lot riding on this purchase.
29:47Hello!
29:48We can't afford to lose 500 bucks.
29:50These artifacts better pay off.
29:52How are you doing?
29:53Nice to meet you.
29:54Good to see you.
29:54My name's Frank.
29:55Daniel called you?
29:56Yeah.
29:57My name's Kevin Dowdy.
29:58I've been in the artifact business for many years.
30:00All right.
30:00You said you're the man on the Indian artifacts, huh?
30:02Educating folks on Native American artifacts is a passion, because these are probably the oldest implements in the country that
30:08were made in fashion by human hands.
30:10This point, it's got a little damage on the ear, but still a nice piece.
30:15These two are very similar to each other.
30:16Yeah, these are almost the same point style and about the same age.
30:20Everything that I'm looking at here pretty much predates what we know as the tribes.
30:24Okay.
30:25They were hunter-gatherers, and they were nomads.
30:28They did everything with stone, bone, and wood.
30:32Unfortunately, most of the bone and the wood-
30:35It's gone.
30:35It's deteriorated, yeah.
30:36Nothing we make today probably will be here 10,000 years from now.
30:40Whereas their implements so crudely fashioned have stood the test of time.
30:54What do you think?
30:55There's several things that factor into the price.
30:58Of course, the quality.
30:59Right.
30:59Condition.
31:00The condition.
31:01The color.
31:01The material.
31:03This piece is about 4,500 to 6,000 years old.
31:06Wow.
31:07Wow.
31:07That old?
31:08This is archaic.
31:09These knives, some of these are archaic.
31:12Some of the things from the archaic time period can bring big money too.
31:17Some of these items I have are 6,000 years old.
31:19I mean, that's pretty incredible.
31:20This piece, like it sits, comfortably a hundred dollars.
31:25Okay.
31:26A hundred bucks is nice, but it's a long way to 500.
31:29This is what's called a banner stone.
31:31Okay.
31:31This piece has been broken and then salvaged.
31:33These were used on a throwing stick for momentum.
31:36And it looks to be authentic.
31:39Okay.
31:39Quite a nice find.
31:52What's something like this run?
31:54Probably conservatively, I'd say 200 bucks, somewhere in that neighborhood.
32:02Really?
32:03I'm liking this so far.
32:04Yeah.
32:05This piece, that's a corner notch point.
32:07Intact corner notch pieces would be some of the more desirable pieces in the collection.
32:12This one's probably a $100, $150 piece.
32:15I'm doing great already.
32:17This piece, I'd put in the $250 to $300 range.
32:20Really?
32:23What do you think the whole collection's worth?
32:27Now that would be selling them individually.
32:29Gotcha.
32:31I'd say somewhere, I'm gonna say, somewhere around $2,000 retail.
32:42$2,000?
32:43That's great.
32:44That's awesome, man.
32:45That's great.
32:45I'm into it for about $500.
32:47You did well.
32:50Appreciate it.
32:51Thank you so much.
32:51Danielle found the right guy.
32:53Kevin's appraisal was $2,000.
32:55Since that's much more than I expected, and because Dale's using the money for local kids,
32:59I think we'll give him $500 back.
33:03Alright.
33:04Hey, nice to meet you.
33:05Thank you so much.
33:06Have a great day.
33:07Don't put those in the back of the van.
33:08Put them in the front.
33:09Don't worry about it.
33:10See you, Kevin.
33:11See you later.
33:12See you guys.
33:13Mike and Frank had something there they hadn't ever seen before.
33:16And we were able to give them some idea of age, some idea of value.
33:21I think he did a great job.
33:23See you later!
33:30This is turning out to be a great trip, but the only thing I can think about is seeing
33:34that Von Dutch motorcycle.
33:36Frank, do you understand the significance of this bike?
33:39When's the last time you saw me this excited?
33:40The other day when there was a rusty bicycle, and then you found out it was a girl's bike,
33:44and then you're like...
33:44Here's Danny.
33:46You got some good news for me?
33:47I just want to hear one time how awesome I am.
33:51Go ahead.
33:52Say it.
33:52In my good ear.
33:53You are awesome.
33:55Okay, great.
33:55With more enthusiasm this time, because...
33:58I'm the girl who gets you to where you need to go.
34:00Where do you boys need to be right now?
34:02We need to be in Von Dutch land.
34:05What do you got?
34:06I got you in Von Dutch land.
34:07That's what I got.
34:09Von Dutch land.
34:09You're amazing!
34:11What do you got?
34:12Where's it at?
34:13I have some kind of sketchy directions for you, so you're just going to have to bear
34:16with it.
34:17From where you're at right now, you want to go probably like 20 miles, and you're going
34:21to take a left where you see this like sheep farm.
34:24You'll see it.
34:25And then you're going to take your third right.
34:28Third right.
34:28Then you're going to go around this roundabout, and up two hills, and it'll be at the bottom
34:33of the second hill on your right-hand side.
34:36I lost it after the first right.
34:38Danielle.
34:39Anyway, it's all written down for you.
34:40Danielle.
34:41It's written down in the email.
34:42It's there, but you want to look for a for sale sign, because when you see that for
34:45sale sign, you know you're close.
34:47For sale, we're there.
34:48That's fine.
34:50You're very welcome.
34:51Bye.
34:52You're awesome.
34:53Bye-bye.
34:54I don't care what.
34:55If she gets us anywhere close, anywhere in the county, we're going to be able to
34:59find it.
35:02He's got a for sale sign.
35:04For sale.
35:05Look for a for sale sign.
35:06Right now, we're just driving around in circles.
35:07Keep your eyeballs peeled, son.
35:09See, it's for sale.
35:10For sale, son.
35:11All right, right there.
35:11Pull in here.
35:12All right, I'm whipping in.
35:12There's a for sale sign right there.
35:14Calm down.
35:14Calm down.
35:15You don't want to look too eager.
35:16This is something that Von Dutch created from scratch from the dark depths of his mind.
35:21This thing is colossal cool.
35:23This is good.
35:24This is it.
35:24This is off the beaten track.
35:27All right.
35:28We're here.
35:28That's good.
35:28Good luck.
35:30Good luck.
35:30I got a fire.
35:33This has got to be it.
35:35That's the only for sale sign.
35:37There's not much to the property here.
35:38I see some chickens.
35:39I see some pigs.
35:41No bike.
35:42Hello.
35:45Hello.
35:46Hey, how's it going?
35:48All right.
35:50Did you have a yard sale here a couple weeks ago?
35:53Yes.
35:54All right.
35:55See?
35:55Might be the place.
35:56Hey, I'm Mike.
35:57How you doing?
35:58Hi.
35:58How you doing?
35:59My name's Frank.
35:59Hello.
36:00What's your name?
36:01Weta.
36:02Hey, we talked to a guy that said there was somebody on this road that had a yard sale
36:06here and he said that you had a motorcycle with a Volkswagen motor in it.
36:10Yes, I do.
36:12I actually said it was a Von Dutch.
36:15Yes.
36:15Can we see it?
36:17Is it for sale?
36:18I don't know.
36:19Can we at least look at it?
36:26We talked to a guy that said that you had a motorcycle with a Volkswagen motor in it.
36:31Yes, I do.
36:32Can we see it?
36:38Yes.
36:39Okay, cool.
36:40I guess so.
36:40All right, cool.
36:41I've always had a motorcycle in my life.
36:43I started riding motorcycles when I was 17.
36:47My mom rented to some bikers.
36:50The biggest mistake in your life, she says.
36:56This is my moment of truth.
37:00Oh my God.
37:01Wow.
37:02Frankie.
37:03I can't even believe what I'm looking at.
37:05Dutch did many things with Volkswagens, but this is the Von Dutch motorcycle.
37:10Yeah.
37:11Oh yeah.
37:12After all the miles, after all the windshield time, I finally find my holy grail.
37:17Oh my God, Frankie.
37:19This is the infamous XABW masterpiece.
37:22Oh my God.
37:23It's got a Volkswagen motor, Honda 450 tank, Moto Guzzi front end, and the 1942 Harley XA frame.
37:31Look at right here.
37:33He engraved his name in the motor.
37:35Von Dutch.
37:36Yup.
37:36This thing is full on Johnny Cash special.
37:39It's everything I love about old Harleys and Volkswagens rolled into one.
37:43How did you get this?
37:44Well, Tom Burke, he owned a motorcycle shop in Long Beach.
37:49And he got it from Randy Smith, who got it from Ed Roth, who got it from Dutch.
37:55Really?
37:56That's amazing.
37:57Ed Roth is a legendary artist and custom car builder in Southern California in the 1950s
38:02and 60s.
38:14It's well known that Von Dutch and Ed Roth were friends.
38:18So knowing that he's part of the equation is no surprise.
38:21Do you have a title for it?
38:22Yes, I do.
38:23With Ed Roth's name on it.
38:26No way.
38:26This thing has the whole package.
38:28I've got to try to buy this from WIDA.
38:30What do you think you're going to do with it?
38:33Well, I was hoping someday to maybe put it in a museum and display it or hang it for my
38:39rafters.
38:41Well, I tell you what.
38:42I mean, I would agree with you 100% that it needs to be like a focal point of at
38:46least someone's collection.
38:47Right.
38:49Has anybody ever made you an offer on the bike?
38:52No one's ever seen it.
38:54Truthfully, I've never thought about selling the Von Dutch.
38:57It's something that I want to pass on to my children.
39:01Well, here's the kind of guy I am.
39:03I'm the kind of guy that wouldn't restore this bike.
39:07Any of his pinstriping, any of this detail that he did by hand.
39:11I mean, he's like the Rembrandt of custom.
39:15Right.
39:15Meeting someone that knows who Von Dutch was, was quite amazing.
39:20I mean, his bikes were some of the most beautiful bikes that were ever built.
39:27Would you take 15 grand for it?
39:31No.
39:33I think it's worth more than that.
39:36I can tell that Weta is really attached to this bike.
39:39She understands its history and its importance to the motorcycle world.
39:43I've got to tread lightly here.
39:44How about $16,000?
39:49I need to talk to Tom.
39:51Tom is the one that originally bought this.
39:54Oh, Tom's here?
39:55Yes.
39:56Tom is the last guy in the chain of ownership on this bike.
39:59The fact that he's here is amazing.
40:01I'll go up to the house and get him, and let me talk with him, and then we'll decide.
40:06All right.
40:07There's a whole other dimension in this negotiation now.
40:09You never know how these things are going to go.
40:11Everybody in the frickin' world wants to know where this bike is.
40:15Right, and nobody knows where it's at.
40:16Okay, it's right here in front of my face.
40:18Okay?
40:19If I can buy it, I'm going to buy it.
40:20I don't want to leave this property without it.
40:22We've just been talking to Tom for quite some time now.
40:25This is making me nervous.
40:26I guess it's all going to come down to what Tom says.
40:28Here he is.
40:31Hey, Tom.
40:32How you doing?
40:32I'm glad to meet you.
40:33My name is Frank.
40:35Hey, how you doing, sir?
40:36Pleasure.
40:36Nice to meet you.
40:36Hi.
40:37We are admiring your motorcycle.
40:39Tom Burke was an inventor, a motorcycle builder before his time.
40:45We ended up dating, and we ended up having a child together, and we were just wild.
40:51We've been just admiring this.
40:52It's a beautiful machine.
40:53God, it sure is.
40:54Well, we heard about this bike when you guys had your yard sale, and it took us a while
40:59to track you guys down.
41:00So now I'm interested in buying it, and I've offered $16,000.
41:07We just said she needed to kind of talk to you about it.
41:09Well, that's a down payment on it.
41:10That's a down payment on it?
41:12All right.
41:13Well, we kind of talked inside, and I'd say 25.
41:23Okay.
41:23Well, let me say this.
41:25That's the first time you've given me a number on it, so I can appreciate that.
41:29I can completely respect everything about this bike, and especially the journey it's been
41:33on with you guys.
41:34$16,000.
41:37I'd do $20,000 on it.
41:42How about $21,000?
41:47You know what?
41:48I'm not even going to argue over another $1,000.
41:50All right.
41:50I appreciate it, my friend.
41:51All right.
41:52It's incredible.
41:53It's incredible.
41:54I am blown away by the fact that we're taking this bike home with us.
41:58Ramp, dude.
41:59One, two, three.
42:00I paid $21,000 for this monument in motorcycle history.
42:04Right now, I'm having an emotional affair, and I'm not selling it.
42:09You never know who you're going to meet at a yard sale.
42:12That's right.
42:12No doubt.
42:13Very nice to meet you.
42:14You know, if Joe Rainbow would have never went to this garage sale, we'd have never had
42:18this lead.
42:19Our whole world is interconnected, and when those connections light up like a switchboard,
42:24you never know where lightning's going to strike.
42:26Thank you guys so much.
42:27I appreciate it.
42:28I'm very torn up about selling it, but the money's wonderful.
42:33Wonderful.
42:34I will see you all later.
42:35Thanks.
42:36Bye.
42:36Bye.
42:37I feel that Mike and Frank will show the bike respect, and the public should be able
42:43to see what Dutch built.
42:45It's a great story.
42:46It's a great story.
42:49Bye.
42:51Drive careful.
42:55We got it!
42:56I can't believe it.
42:57You know what?
42:58I can't believe that it was actually that bike.
43:00I can't.
43:01I feel like I ran a mental marathon.
43:03Joe Rainbow came through.
43:04Joe Rainbow for president.
43:06I'll tell you what.
43:07He didn't come through as much as Danielle.
43:08We should call her and tell her.
43:10Oh my God.
43:10I can't believe it.
43:11We should call her because-
43:12She is going to freak out.
43:14Without her getting on the stick, we wouldn't have found it.
43:19Hello.
43:21Danny!
43:22We found it!
43:24You found the bike?
43:25We found it and it's the Von Dutch bike.
43:28It's the XAVW.
43:29We bought it!
43:31Awesome!
43:32Awesome!
43:33You did great, honey.
43:35Oh.
43:35The bike is priceless, but not as priceless as you are.
43:39This is real nice.
43:40I'm going to bask in the glory of all of this all day.
43:44All right, honey.
43:45We'll celebrate when we get back to the shop.
43:47Okay.
43:47Bye.
43:48Bye.
43:48And that is why they call me Danny Diesel.
