The first day of Downtown mas was dismal, with vendors crying foul over one change in the parade route. However the few masqueraders who crossed the stage were still happy to offer their pick for this year's Road March. Rynessa Cutting has more.

00:03The downtown mask scene was visibly slower this year, with vans trickling across the
00:09once popular judging point. A handful of patrons sat quietly in the stands observing the presentations.
00:30So much of variety, so much of diversity around. Indeed, this is an occasion, this is really special.
00:38We are thoroughly enjoying all our family that we have come here and we are thoroughly, thoroughly
00:44enjoying this place. Meantime, vendors woefully tended their stores, hoping for a few more sales
00:50to make the venture worthwhile. The sales are slow. Normally, around this time,
00:58you see a lot of crowds. Remember back then, they used to go up Frederick Street. Now they changed it
01:04to
01:04Charlotte Street. And a lot of people, some people are confused. A lot of people are confused about it.
01:10And a few people, well, pass and complain about. They say everything just feel off. You're not feeling
01:15like carnival. Sales right now is very slow because the band's hardly passing. And it's, you know,
01:22it's not like before, long ago, when we was up on Frederick Street, it was better. And more bands
01:28we were seeing all the time. But here they're hardly passing. But when it was on Frederick Street,
01:33oh, it was like, it was the boss. It was the best. One drinks vendor reports that while people are
01:39not
01:39going without alcohol after the hefty increase in the cost of spirits, consumption has drastically reduced.
02:01On the roadmatch front, we found that three songs were on repeat on the downtown stage. We asked
02:08masqueraders their pick for roadmatch 2026.
02:13Uncle, you ready? Marshal Mancano.
02:18$20.
02:20So, my roadmatches,
02:23can't be able to serve as a uncle. Give them performance, my uncle.
02:30I can't be able to serve. I can't be able to serve my mind.
02:33Now, at this point, I am a roadman. You are a roadman. We are all roadmen. But at the same
02:39time,
02:39we have to do it again and again and again like it's on our core. Because why? We can't behave
02:45ourselves. So, come Carnival Tuesday, whichever way it swings, whoever takes home the title,
02:50what you can save her. But it will be more than well deserved. Brinasta Cutting, TV6 News.
