Widespread rain and snow arriving in California

From thunderstorms in Northern California to mudslide threats in Los Angeles to heavy snow in the mountains, here's what to expect with the latest West Coast storm.

00:00And as we look at the big picture across the west, satellite and radar together first,

00:04you can see soaking rain in Northern California, but this is a band of heavy rain and wind

00:09moving through the Bay Area.

00:10Now entering the Central Valley is a bigger concern on the local scale.

00:14You can see there's been a little swarm of severe thunderstorm warnings over the past

00:18few hours between San Francisco proper and Monterey Bay.

00:22So as we zoom in one more step, at the moment there are no current severe thunderstorm warnings

00:27in effect with this, but we're not far from that.

00:29We recently had one just expire southwest of San Jose.

00:32You can see still some high reflectivity.

00:34This fine line.

00:35It's moving through Vallejo.

00:36It's approaching Sacramento.

00:37Look out for the wind to increase and the rain as well as this marches through San Jose,

00:42highly populated areas into Pittsburgh, California and other areas just east of the Bay Area

00:47as well.

00:48So again, we've got some issues approaching the Interstate 5.

00:52Wind is a big concern even separate from that squall line, but again, we may see a couple

00:57more severe thunderstorm warnings issued then into Southern California.

01:00There are areas of their flood watches because from San Diego up into Oceanside and Orange

01:05County up into Los Angeles and coastal parts of Ventura County, we are looking at flood

01:10watches.

01:11Some of those areas at especially high risk.

01:13If you've had a recent wildfire in the past couple of years, especially places like Altadena

01:18and Pacific Palisades from just two months ago, we are looking at a more significant

01:22risk of mudslides, debris flows and so forth.

01:25But overnight tonight, the rain expands more in the way of mountain snow as well.

01:29Impacts in Southern California, debris flows near the burn scar areas, snow levels all

01:33the way down to 3,000 feet, heavy snow above 5,000 feet in elevation, one to two inches

01:38of rain very likely for most areas.

01:41The west-facing foothills will see two to four inches of rain, but the snow is a huge

01:46story as well.

01:47And by the numbers, some of these areas with winter storm warnings are looking at two to

01:51four feet of snow, Donner Pass, Bear Valley, parts of the Yosemite National Park area and

01:57also ten plus inches for others farther south.
