00:02What the hell is it?
00:03I don't know.
00:04I'll be watching it for half an hour from the theatre.
00:06Massive heavens, what's that?
00:09And I guess I'd say it's 100k deep, 2,000k wide,
00:12and it's bang in the middle of our flight path.
00:48It's right across our trajectory.
00:50The question is, is it stable?
00:52The question is, what is it? I've never seen anything like it.
00:54Well, except perhaps a poached egg.
00:56Petra, give me Victoria Frobsher.
00:58You've spent too long in the Jovian system, Mr Lewis.
01:01I have to admit, I'm stumped. It's not very often I'm stumped.
01:04Professor.
01:05Victoria, can you come along to the bridge?
01:07There's something I'd like you to look at.
01:09On my way.
01:11Fascinating.
01:12It's worrying.
01:13Not at all. It'll be a very valuable encounter for the students.
01:16I had hoped the rest of this trip might prove uneventful.
01:19If that's your attitude, you ought to have made way for somebody with a pioneering spirit.
01:22We've had quite enough excitement on this ship over the past few days.
01:25We all need a chance to calm down.
01:27You can't expect things to go smoothly when you're on the borders of deep space.
01:32Miss Harvey, what can I do for you?
01:35I wanted comms to Space City. I need to get a message to Paul's parents.
01:39Hasn't that been done yet?
01:40We sent a full signal, Rebecca.
01:41This is a personal message on behalf of the ship.
01:45All right, I'll say so for once.
01:47What's that?
01:49Plasma cloud.
01:50We don't know.
01:51Well, is it a plasma cloud or isn't it?
01:53Well, yes it is, but we're not sure of its exact nature.
01:56We're doing a spectroscopic survey.
01:58You mean you don't know if it's dangerous?
02:00Well, it's unlikely.
02:02Oh, God.
02:03Out of the frying pan, into the fire.
02:08Hey, Philippe.
02:09You want to sneak with you?
02:10Of what?
02:11My promo, my video.
02:12Oh, well, I did.
02:14Well, Belinda and I have just finished it.
02:15It's really something.
02:16Do you think I should?
02:17I thought everything was under wraps until tomorrow.
02:19Yeah, but you're special.
02:20You're my friend.
02:21Yes.
02:22And I think of you as my lucky mascot.
02:23Well, that's nice, Anna.
02:25Well, come on.
02:25I won't tell anyone if you don't.
02:30Yes?
02:31Mr. Gervais, when did you last do any practical astrochemistry?
02:34I did a specialist project in organic maces at Le Mouge Lycée last summer.
02:39Oh, good, good.
02:40We're approaching an unidentified mass of plasma.
02:42I thought you could help Victoria do a spectroscopic examination,
02:45get some hands-on experience.
02:47Great.
02:47I'll be right there.
02:48We'll be in lab four.
02:51I'm sorry, Anna.
02:52Never mind.
02:53You'll have to wait till tomorrow.
02:54I'll try.
02:55Hey, Philippe.
02:56Yeah?
02:57Thanks.
02:58Email for all your support.
03:00No problem.
03:01Any time.
03:02There you go, Rebecca.
03:04All yours.
03:08Message from Rebecca Harvey, Bursa, Columbus College.
03:12Please forward as a matter of urgency to Mr. and Mrs. Neal Lockwood,
03:1632 Ambleside Avenue, Leatherhead, Surrey.
03:19Comcode 9713482.
03:23On behalf of everyone on board the Ilya, I would like to extend our deepest sympathy to you on the
03:29death of your son, Paul.
03:31He was killed whilst undertaking an EVA to effect repairs to the spacecraft.
03:36These actions were brave and went beyond the call of duty, characteristic which earned Paul the great respect, admiration and
03:45affection of students and colleagues alike.
03:48He was a good principal and, more importantly, a good friend to everyone.
03:53He will be greatly missed.
03:57I will make arrangements for his effects to be returned to Earth upon our arrival back at Space City.
04:03Please do not hesitate to contact me if there is anything at all I can do to help.
04:07Your sincerely, Rebecca Harvey, Bursa, message ends.
04:17Do you think, though, what is the fact sent back? It's awfully expensive.
04:21I think his insurance covers it.
04:23Not. I'm sure there must be a fund we could dip into. It's the least we can do.
04:27The least you can do is make sure you have the proper quota of trained staff in future.
04:32It was never part of a principal's job to do EVAs.
04:34And it's not part of your job to tell me what to do.
04:36You're qualified to do EVAs, aren't you, Professor?
04:39If it was anyone's fault, it was mine.
04:41If it was anyone's fault, it was Paul's. He should never have turned off the safety override.
04:44Must we keep going through and through this? Let's just forget the past now and look to the future.
04:49Yeah, whatever that's going to bring us.
04:51Miss Harvey, if you've finished your business, would you mind leaving the bridge? It is for authorised personnel only.
05:03At times like this, you've noticed the difference between trained personnel and civilians.
05:06I'm a danceable solution to the space-age revolution.
05:09I'll excite the population to a state of purulation.
05:11Activate, innovate, innovate, agitate, energise and socialise.
05:17Be wise.
05:21So if you want to survive this galactic ride, get up and vote for Fiona McBride.
05:26Bride.
05:27Bride.
05:28Bride.
05:29Bride.
05:32Well, what do you reckon?
05:34Classic, eh?
05:35Pretty dynamic.
05:37I suppose if I flunk out here, I can always get a job in PR. I'd get a better social
05:40life.
05:41And more free drinks.
05:42Tempting, isn't it?
05:44Do you think they're going to allow it all?
05:46What?
05:47Vickers and Tarts parties.
05:48It's only dressing up.
05:50Strip monopoly.
05:52They like to think they're responsible for our moral welfare as well as our education.
05:56We're consenting adults, Gabriella.
05:58I'm not.
05:59Well, vote for Anna Bagani if you want to.
06:02Actually, I've been meaning to talk to you about that.
06:05What?
06:07You can't be serious.
06:08I've got to.
06:09She keeps on me and Philippe.
06:11Well, you and Philippe.
06:12Vote for her then.
06:12I don't care.
06:13Well, it's not that I don't want to vote for you.
06:15Gabriella, if Anna Bagani gets your vote, it's not a problem.
06:19Well, it might be.
06:20She's won over Belinda Skinner.
06:22The Christian Scientist.
06:23Yeah, well, I don't expect her to vote for Boo, Sex and the Glorious Goodwood evening.
06:27You might be disqualified.
06:28They don't encourage gambling.
06:30Who is this they exactly?
06:32In case you haven't noticed, there isn't anybody actually in charge on this ship anymore.
06:36Isn't there?
06:37No.
06:38Elliot's gone, Fimbo's Fimbo, Breland doesn't give a toss what anybody does, and Paul's dead.
06:45Rebecca?
06:46Rebecca's more depraved than any of us.
06:50So, looks like we could be in for a pretty wild time then.
06:52Yes.
06:53Unless everyone goes off their trolley and votes for Anna Bagani.
06:58You couldn't have called at a better moment.
07:00She was just about to drag me into her cabin and show me her promo.
07:03I mean, what could I have said?
07:05Poor Anna.
07:06Why do you think he thought of me for this?
07:08Do you think he's got me earmarked?
07:09It's Edelis.
07:10No.
07:12No, he thinks we're all hidden and by experience.
07:14I didn't think even you, I existed.
07:16He knows more than most people think.
07:19And he cares more.
07:21Right, I think we're ready.
07:24It's almost too beautiful to be harmful.
07:26A dangerous premise.
07:28We have to assume it's potentially unstable.
07:31With the luck this ship's having at the moment, it's bound to be.
07:34Right, let's have a look then, shall we?
07:37I'd like to invite some students up here tomorrow to have a look.
07:40Valuable experience, this sort of encounter.
07:42Do you really think we should see this as a sightseeing trip before we know what it is?
07:46Victoria will let me know any minute now.
07:48We might have to change course.
07:50I'm not deviating unless it's entirely necessary.
07:54Thank you, Professor, but I am the captain.
07:58If it shows that this is no risk to our E or B shields, then by all means, selected students
08:03will be invited into observe.
08:04But until we know that, I'm standing by for evasive action.
08:08Oh, man, there's no way I'm risking any more lives.
08:12Encore de june, Sir Bupé.
08:14You think you ought?
08:15I'm old enough to know when I want to get sloshed.
08:18Okay, but don't come running to me when you've got that little man with the tomahawk bashing your brains out
08:23tomorrow.
08:24Tomorrow is something I want to forget.
08:27Why?
08:28I have to go to Paul's cabin and sort out his things and see what to do with them.
08:32Well, can't somebody else do it?
08:34That's what being bursa means, doing the things no one else wants to do.
08:38Can I give you a hand?
08:40No, it's all right.
08:41I'm a big girl now.
08:42I'm there if you want me.
08:44Cheers.
08:49Tell me, Christoph, what's the point to all this nonsense?
08:53Name me one person who's happy.
08:56Name me one person who's truly happy.
08:58I've always thought Anna McGarney quite contented so.
09:07She's got her faith, hasn't she?
09:09Yeah.
09:10Maybe there's something in it.
09:11A lot of people find comfort in religion.
09:14You're not trying to convert me, are you?
09:15No, but people often turn to God after a bereavement.
09:20Bereavement?
09:21I haven't exactly been bereaved, have I?
09:25Until recently, we did nothing but argue.
09:27Hey, you and Paul were becoming quite good friends.
09:30Good friends, yeah.
09:33You know, last time we were here, we were playing one of those stupid truth games.
09:38Fiona asked Paul if he fancied me.
09:40And?
09:41He denied it, of course.
09:44You think he was lying?
09:46I'll never know it was lying.
09:50So, do we have a verdict?
09:52Well, it has all the characteristics of an H2 region.
09:55I suspected as much.
09:57Do you know what that means, Mr. Gervais?
09:59It contains ionised hydrogen.
10:00Good.
10:01With cyanogen complexes.
10:02A phenomenon normally found in interstellar space,
10:05and which we need to know all about for Deedalus.
10:08So we need to keep a close watch.
10:10Oh, indeed, we could learn a great deal.
10:12This is a very lucky encounter altogether.
10:14It won't be, if it's unstable and we disturb its magnetic field.
10:18Any signs of instability so far?
10:20No, but I think...
10:21Well, there you are, then.
10:23I don't think we need worry.
10:24We haven't really got close enough to disturb it yet.
10:27Don't you think we should take precautions?
10:29Don't worry.
10:30The captain has everything under control.
10:32Now, I suggest you two keep a constant monitor,
10:35and let me know if anything interesting manifests itself.
10:54Professor Breland did the graveyard shift.
10:56He didn't see anything untoward.
10:57Well, I hope something does happen.
10:59I'm getting bored.
10:59Don't say that.
11:00As long as it's stable, we're safe.
11:03I wonder if we ought to divert.
11:05Well, I think we should shut down any unnecessary electronic systems.
11:09Well, the election promise is starting in a minute.
11:11Can we watch?
11:13Philippe, I don't think you're taking this wonderful golden opportunity totally seriously.
11:17Oh, I am.
11:18But surely our social life is important.
11:20Man cannot live by spectroscopic examination alone.
11:23No, no, go on.
11:24Turn them on.
11:24I'm quite interested, actually.
11:26Hello.
11:26I'm Anna Boghani.
11:28Most of you know me, but for those of you who don't,
11:30I'm a second-year undergrad,
11:31and I've got a lot of hobbies and interests that I'd like to share with you,
11:35and I'm sure you'd like to share with me.
11:37Oh, no, I don't think I can bear it.
11:39We can get together for a sing-song session.
11:40No, no, leave it on.
11:57And so, a chance to hear about the nefarious dealings of Blackbeard,
12:03Bartholomew Roberts and Anne Bonny,
12:06the notorious topless lady pirate.
12:10Tales of villainy, treachery, and daring do.
12:14Miss it at your peril.
12:18What was all that about?
12:20Just a bit of a helping hand.
12:22Oh, Pimbo, you are a sweetie.
12:24Well, I'd better vote.
12:26Philippe, aren't you going to vote?
12:28Um, no.
12:30No, not just yet.
12:32Well, I don't want to rush into anything.
12:34It wouldn't be fair.
12:36Hmm, yeah, just make sure you get plenty of roughage.
12:39I know it's hard on the ship, but go for the wholemeal bread and lots of vegetables.
12:47Hey, Rebecca, what's the matter?
12:50I can't do it.
12:51Not on my own.
12:51You don't have to.
12:53It's got ruined.
12:54He had such a go at me and I was awful back.
12:58If only I'd...
12:59Hey, hey, don't say if only.
13:01They're the most ineffectual words in the English language.
13:04I know.
13:05Come on, I'll give you a hand, huh?
13:11Yeah!
13:13You know, I really think I'm in with a chance.
13:15Get serious.
13:17Look, you haven't got any votes yet.
13:20That's because nobody with any sense is even up yet, Anna.
13:28If we start by making a pile on the bed with everything for his parents
13:32and a pile on the floor for chucking out,
13:34I'll start with the wardrobe.
13:36I'll start here.
13:39Are we keeping the clothes or what?
13:42I don't really know, Kristoff.
13:47My God, look at this.
13:55Paul and Lisa, June 2015.
13:58That was only four months ago.
14:19Relax.
14:20Half an hour will be past it.
14:22Yes, but we don't know how it might react to our electric field.
14:25I mean, we're pretty close.
14:26Trust me.
14:28Wouldn't it be better to take precautions?
14:29Just to be on the safe side?
14:31Yes.
14:33I don't believe in taking unnecessary risks.
14:36But if we'd always erred on the side of caution,
14:38we'd never have ventured into space.
14:39And then where would you be?
14:41University of Stuttgart, perhaps?
14:44Right, ladies and gentlemen.
14:47I've summoned you all here this morning
14:49so that you may experience firsthand
14:51one of the wonderful phenomena that space has to offer.
14:55You will never have had such an opportunity before,
14:58but I hope some of you will again.
15:00An encounter of this nature is extremely rare.
15:04Who's so elite?
15:05Being normally associated with interstellar space.
15:08And I had four.
15:09Fiona had one.
15:11Say I-L-E-A.
15:14Say I-L-E-A.
15:16I'm calling you.
15:17Sat in your cabin
15:18and you don't know just what to do.
15:20An accessible solution to the space's revolution.
15:23I'll excite the population to a state of humiliation.
15:25Activate, innovate, innovate,
15:29agitate, energise and socialise.
15:31Be wise.
15:35So if you want to survive this galactic ride,
15:37get up and vote for Fiona McBride.
15:40Bride.
15:41Bride.
15:42Bride.
15:43Bride.
15:47All right!
15:50Do you think she's still his girlfriend?
15:52I don't know.
15:53Yeah, he never even mentioned it to me.
15:55Yeah, well, if she is, she'll have to know.
15:58How can we find out?
15:59Send comms to Ireland Five?
16:01We could check out his diary.
16:03We can't.
16:04Rebecca, it's the quickest way to find out one way or the other.
16:08I've got a lot of hobbies and interests
16:09that I'd like to share with you
16:11and I'm sure you'd like to share with me.
16:13All of you who enjoy music,
16:15we can get together for a sing-song session.
16:17Thursday nights, don't forget.
16:20Two, three, four.
16:22Michael Rowe, the bird ashore.
16:26Hallelujah.
16:29Michael Rowe, the bird ashore.
16:33Hallelujah.
16:36In five minutes, we should be clear.
16:38So I want you to spend that time observing the plasma,
16:43noting its characteristics,
16:45memorising them for future reference.
16:47Remember, it's not everyone who will have had this chance.
16:53Please, everyone, I can assure you there's no danger.
16:57Timbo.
16:57Petra, close down all non-essential systems.
17:00Reduce electrical supply to life support level.
17:04Hallelujah.
17:05Hey.
17:06What a shame.
17:07It's Fiona McBride.
17:09She's such a bad loser.
17:12What's going on?
17:13I don't like this.
17:15Look upon it as a sleeping animal.
17:18Largely inert, but still receptive to outside stimuli.
17:22Of course it will react as a matter of reflex.
17:25It's not geared to attack.
17:27What if we've been closer?
17:29But we weren't, were we?
17:30We were well out of reach.
17:31There is no need for histrionics.
17:33Better to be safe.
17:34If you say so.
17:35We're out of reach now, wouldn't you say, Captain Lewis?
17:37Just about.
17:38Petra, restore all systems.
17:41Systems restored.
17:43Hallelujah.
17:46Michael Rowe, the bird ashore.
17:51Alleluia, Michael Rowe, the bird ashore.
17:56Hallelujah, Michael Rowe, the bird ashore.
18:03Word search Lisa.
18:05Latest entry.
18:08Perhaps there is life after Lisa.
18:11I'm not sure, but I think Rebecca and I are actually starting to get on.
18:16After weeks of us getting down each other's throats.
18:20Yeah.
18:21I'd go as far as to say she was flirting with me tonight.
18:24We got roped into a game of truth, dare, kiss or promise in the Club Galileo.
18:31A couple of more drinks and I would have chosen kiss, but not in front of the students.
18:36No.
18:38Perhaps another time.
18:41Well, well, well.
18:42What will tomorrow bring, eh?
18:44I'm doing an EVA for Fimber.
18:47Yeah.
18:48Seems to me life on the Ilios perking up a bit.
18:51So, Lisa Franklin, stuff that in your pipe and smoker.
18:56You can't keep a good man down.
19:08Penny for them.
19:10I feel such a fool.
19:13Overreacting like that.
19:14I'd rather you were cautious than impulsive.
19:17There was no need to worry.
19:19I mean, we knew that the magnetic field was totally frozen into the plasma
19:23and that any instability would be self-correcting.
19:26You've never encountered such a phenomenon before.
19:29Neither had you and you didn't panic.
19:32Victoria, I've had countless years in space.
19:36For the past 15 of those years, I've been looking beyond the solar system.
19:40I just wonder if I'll ever be completely rational.
19:44You know I'll be sorry to lose you from Daedalus.
19:48What?
19:49At least I presume you won't be coming.
19:51Not now that you're getting married.
19:59It's all over now.
20:01All over.
20:03This was so predictable.
20:14No hard feelings, I hope.
20:17It can't be right.
20:18It's a fix.
20:19Somebody's broken into Petra and fixed it.
20:21Yes.
20:22Well, I must admit, I was surprised.
20:24You were.
20:25By my reckoning, you shouldn't have had more than four votes.
20:29Oh, thank you.
20:37This isn't your way of telling me you don't want me on Daedalus.
20:40Heaven forbid.
20:42Only it had never even occurred to me not to go.
20:45I mean, I've been dedicated to Daedalus ever since you first asked me.
20:48I've never doubted your commitment.
20:50But love can do strange things to ambition.
20:53Well, for my father's sake, I have to go.
20:56Otherwise, he'd have died for nothing.
20:58You told me that.
20:59You're going to marry your Frenchman, then leave him for 12 years?
21:02He won't like that.
21:03I know the French.
21:05Do I have to leave him?
21:06What do you mean?
21:08Well, I mean, there are 400 people going on Daedalus.
21:11Why can't Jean-Francois be one of them?
21:16Here you go.
21:18You've fixed it.
21:19I know you've fixed it.
21:20I don't need to resort to rigging elections, Anna.
21:23When the lights went out, you were hacking into Petra and made the lights go out.
21:27That was Fimbo.
21:28He had to close down all the systems.
21:30Sure.
21:30You must think I'm really stupid.
21:32It's true, Anna.
21:33We were too near the plasma.
21:34You.
21:35I trusted you, Philippe.
21:36I trusted you.
21:37You're paranoid.
21:38And you're a bad loser.
21:40Honestly, Anna, it wasn't a fix.
21:42Traitress.
21:43And don't you talk to me.
21:45Charming.
21:46Traitors.
21:47All of you, traitors.
21:48Come on, what on earth's going on?
21:49Anna can't accept that I've won.
21:51Oh, Anna, there has to be losers.
21:53She rigged the computer.
21:54Rubbish.
21:55Look, why don't we just have a recount?
21:56You can do that for us, can't you, Bertie?
21:57Sure.
21:58Yeah, a recount.
21:59You'll be exposed, Fiona McBride, and I hope they throw you off this ship.
22:05Well, I'll consider it.
22:07I must confess it never have been my first choice.
22:10Oh, I know he would be dedicated, and he's talented.
22:13I mean, his research on the...
22:13Oh, I don't doubt he's got the ability.
22:16To be honest, it was his association with Melody Shore that made me doubt him.
22:20Oh.
22:23The sociologists say we need married couples.
22:25I think the two of you might make a formidable team.
22:28But that is not a promise.
22:30Let's get this journey out of the way first, and I'll think about it seriously.
22:32Well, we wouldn't let you down.
22:34I mean, I could promise you that.
22:34I should hope not, indeed.
22:37Now, I think I ought to go and have a look at that scanner.
22:40Oh.
22:41If you had been researching at Valhalla, you'd know that H2 regions are often associated with much more dangerous phenomena.
22:48Are they?
22:49Yes.
22:59Petra, this vote's recorded SRC elections, 27, 950.
23:03You know, the good thing about being a bursa is nobody leaves you alone long enough to brew.
23:07Well, if you ever want a shoulder to cry on.
23:11You must have to wring your tunic out at night.
23:14Don't you ever get sick of other people's problems?
23:16That depends on the problems.
23:18The people.
23:19Well, you can expect Anna Begani through that door in a minute.
23:23Oh, well, well.
23:25This is going to cause a stir.
23:48Oh, well, well.
