00:01Pump's running. Ignition sequence starts.
00:07Zulu Romeo 1 to Hylia. Respond, please.
00:09Yes, Bulldog.
00:10Ignition sequence are ported, Hylia. We have a problem.
00:13Ah, the comms link will remain open.
00:16We're losing signal strength.
00:18Petra, telemetry channel 30.259 now.
00:22Switching telemetry to 30.259.
00:25Commander, what's the trouble?
00:27Systems failure stage five.
00:30Or life support systems nominal.
00:32Having another go. Stand by, Hylia.
00:34No, too late, Bulldog. The window's closing.
00:37I don't believe this.
00:38Round again in another five hours.
00:42Stupid.
00:43Stupid girl!
01:21I said to myself, a small step for Gabriella Tanzi and a giant step for womankind.
01:25Once you're scared.
01:27Anna, when I walked onto G33, it was though I wasn't wearing any boots.
01:30I could feel a tingling up from the sole on my feet.
01:33Me, Gabriella, the second woman to see it and the first to walk on it.
01:37You know, I honestly never thought you'd dare do it.
01:39I bet you were petrified the entire time.
01:42The only time, the only time I was petrified, Daniel Weatherby, was when...
01:47Yeah.
01:49It was when I got back here and Professor Bell and started ranting and raving.
01:53I don't blame him.
01:54It was brave, but it was mad.
01:57Well, he didn't have to go on about how it could have cost lives.
02:00All I did was go down and come back up.
02:02This isn't London, you know.
02:04You can't just pop down to the shops and back.
02:07You're just jealous because I went, I did it, I made a little piece of history and everything's okay, isn't
02:12it?
02:13Ilya to Zulu Romeo One.
02:16Any second now.
02:17Ilya to Zulu Romeo One.
02:20Ilya to Zulu Romeo One.
02:22Please acknowledge.
02:24Zulu Romeo One to Ilya.
02:25Got him.
02:29We have you on screen, Zulu Romeo One.
02:31Bulldog.
02:33The starboard legs are nine centimetres down in the permafrost.
02:37Oh, how the hell did that happen?
02:38Well, I used my side burner to get into position. It must have melted the surface.
02:41Oh, if that stupid girl hadn't gone down with you in the first place.
02:44Okay, Mercedes, just get me the information to get out of here.
02:47I'll calculate the thrust you need.
02:48No, that's not the problem.
02:50You're worried about what's under the permafrost, right, Bulldog?
02:52I don't want a big burn and half the asteroid goes up.
02:56Where's Charles?
02:57Preparing a relief shuttle.
02:58I'll get Victoria to calculate the surface constituents.
03:01I've rigged a surface monitor on channel 19. I'll patch it through.
03:06Looks all right.
03:07Hmm.
03:08If you didn't know, he was sitting on a pool of volatile methane and ammonia.
03:17Yes?
03:18It's Mercedes.
03:19Pool's in trouble on G33.
03:21I need some help.
03:22I'll be in the lab.
03:24And I'm not gonna tell my parents till we get back to pacify.
03:26My father will not believe it.
03:28My mother will go absolutely mad.
03:30And that's for my boring old brother.
03:32Oh, hello, Victoria.
03:34Don't say you're going to give me a lecture, too.
03:36No.
03:37I haven't got time.
03:38I've had a blurb from Professor Brelin.
03:40I've had a blurb from Mercedes.
03:41Something is wrong with the shuttle.
03:43What?
03:44What happened?
03:45Gabby, in space, if you step out of line, you don't know what the results might be.
03:49It's not a game.
03:52That's what they were trying to tell you.
03:58Elliot, Azulu, Romeo, when?
03:59Any change in your situation?
04:01There's been no more movement.
04:02Are you sure?
04:03Oh, for God's sake, he's my bum on the hot seat, isn't it?
04:06Just checking.
04:07What did Brelin say?
04:08He's getting suited up.
04:09Then he's gonna begin checks on the shuttle.
04:11If he comes down as well, you might end up with two of us sitting on a boiling kettle.
04:14Well, Mercedes and Victoria are working on that.
04:16They're trying to find a safe level for the burn.
04:19Victoria, she's good, isn't she?
04:22She's the best we've got.
04:31Come on, Melody.
04:32Let me in, for God's sake.
04:36Open.
04:40What do you want?
04:41Well, they're having a bit of a problem with the shuttle.
04:44What sort of problem?
04:45I don't know.
04:45Brennan thinks he might have to send a mine nut down.
04:48Do you want anything?
04:50Yeah.
04:50I want not to be in this situation.
04:52That's what I want.
04:53Poor thing.
04:54Cup or something?
04:56No.
04:57Have you been to see Rebecca yet?
05:00I don't want to see Rebecca.
05:01Oh, come on, Mel.
05:03Nobody could be more of a softie than Rebecca.
05:05She doesn't want to put any pressure on.
05:07She just wants to be a shoulder to cry on.
05:08You just have no idea what it's like, have you?
05:11Well, no, not really.
05:12I'm caught in a trap, Daniel.
05:13I'm just going round and round and there's nothing I can do that can get me out of here.
05:18Listen, I don't know how you feel, but I do want to help and I don't want to make things
05:24worse.
05:25Oh, no, I'm being a pig.
05:28It's all right.
05:30All the women in my family are pigs.
05:34It's a Wetherby tradition.
05:37Go and see Rebecca.
05:42That's the problem.
05:44Methane.
05:44Yeah, and ammonia.
05:46And fairly large quantities too.
05:47Yeah, put in a big other heat source next to that and up you go.
05:51Maybe.
05:52Well, Charles will just have to go down and fetch him in the relief shuttle.
05:55Oh, he could run into the same problems.
05:57Yeah, I've told him that already, but he's convinced that he can get down there without using the side burners.
06:01Oh, and just plonk himself down next to Commander Drummond with no problem.
06:04Mm-hm. Genius.
06:05That's the word.
06:07Oh, will you go away, please?
06:08Is it serious?
06:10What do you know about it?
06:12Only what Victoria told Gabby that there's some problem with Commander Drummond in the shuttle.
06:15I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said anything.
06:18She's crying her eyes out in the common room.
06:19I'm sorry, but let me work, please.
06:24If you could just let me tell her what's going on.
06:27Okay.
06:28The shuttle's got two legs stuck in the permafrost.
06:30We're deciding whether or not it's safe to ignite the burners.
06:33Why shouldn't it be?
06:34Methane and ammonia just below the surface.
06:38Ah.
06:38Yes. Ah.
06:40So what should I tell Gabby?
06:42We haven't really got time to agonise over Gabby.
06:45Tell her Professor Brelin is about to go down in the relief shuttle.
06:48Well, she's bound to think it's her fault.
06:50If it hadn't been for her, he wouldn't have had to go down twice.
06:51All right, all right.
06:52Tell her that she's endangered two lives, not including her own.
06:55And she might well have caused 20 million EQs worth of damage to the shuttle.
07:00Seems a bit hard.
07:01Can I have some help with the spectrograph, please?
07:04Well, it won't do her any harm to find out the law of cause and effect.
07:08Or the law of physics, either, for that matter.
07:11An action done can never be undone.
07:14Now, shoot off the leave. I've got work to do.
07:20It really didn't mean you had to see me tonight.
07:22Oh, it's all right. You know, nobody's sleeping.
07:24We've got a problem with the asteroid.
07:26Are you going to have some coffee?
07:27Oh, yeah, please.
07:29So, how are you feeling?
07:31I'm tired, itchy.
07:33My nose keeps running and everything smells revolting.
07:37I keep feeling faint and sick.
07:39That's just a day.
07:40You know, you should be over-feeling sick by now.
07:43Do you want me to call Kristoff?
07:46I don't know.
07:48I used to be so decisive.
07:50Now all I want to do is lie on my bed and look at the ceiling.
07:53Well, I've made some enquiries.
07:55Shall I tell you what I've found out?
07:56OK, come sit down.
07:59Well, you can either have the baby at Space City Medical Center
08:02or go to the American Hospital on Island 5.
08:05And it wouldn't take too long to get you there.
08:06The Valencia sails from Passify on December 16th.
08:09This is assuming I have the baby.
08:11Well, if you keep lying on your bed doing nothing, you will, won't you?
08:15Well, what about baby banks?
08:17I thought everybody on Earth used baby banks these days.
08:19We don't have the cyrogenic facility to port your baby to a baby bank.
08:22In space, you either have the baby or terminate the pregnancy.
08:26Now, let's say you have the baby.
08:27You're still a student.
08:29And if you want to continue your course at Columbus...
08:31I couldn't have a baby with me here on the Iliad.
08:33Babies are only small people, Melody.
08:35But where would it go when I was at tutorials or in the lab?
08:38Here.
08:39I can look after it.
08:40I really like babies.
08:41Well, that's all very well when it's tiny.
08:43What about when it starts walking around and being a nuisance?
08:46Look, I don't want you pressured into a termination just because things might be difficult.
08:50But you have to tell me what you want, Melody.
08:55Bec, I really don't know.
08:57It all seems too much of a decision to make on my own.
09:00You're not on your own.
09:02And you know Daniel wants you to have it.
09:04It's all a fantasy to him.
09:06I don't think so.
09:07He's very practical.
09:09And he's rich if we're talking about practicalities.
09:11Daniel!
09:12He owes thousands of EQs all around Jupiter's system.
09:14Yes, but his family don't.
09:15There's only him and his sister.
09:19What about if there was something wrong with the baby?
09:22Well, you've no reason to think there might be a problem, have you?
09:24Only I don't know much about my family.
09:27Okay.
09:28Well, I'll take a blood sample.
09:29And we'll run a test tomorrow.
09:31Okay.
09:33Whatever it is, it can't be that serious.
09:35He's obviously still alive.
09:36How do we know?
09:37He must be.
09:38We'd have heard otherwise.
09:39Things going through his first pall, then this.
09:43Anna!
09:43Oh, I've been in space so long now.
09:45I've seen what can happen.
09:47I've been in space a lot longer than you.
09:48It's just a mechanical fault.
09:51They're trying to work out how Drummond can fix it, that's all.
09:53But maybe I did something to make it all go wrong.
09:55Oh, don't get upset again, Gabby, for God's sake.
09:58Have you found out anything?
09:59Two of the shuttle legs have sunk into the pump, Frost.
10:02They think the amount of thrust needed to launch it might cause a problem with gases under the surface.
10:06It might explode.
10:08Oh, God!
10:09Are you sure they'll think of a way around it?
10:10Well, what if they don't?
10:11Come on, I'll take you to the cabin.
10:12He needs some sleep.
10:13But I won't sleep!
10:14Yes, you will.
10:15You're exhausted.
10:16Daniel, will you call me if you hear anything?
10:18Yeah, of course I will.
10:19Really, Daniel, how bad is it now?
10:21You can tell us now she's gone.
10:23Oh.
10:24That's mine.
10:27What's that?
10:27Oh!
10:28Oh, this, is it really?
10:30Yes, I...
10:30No, I'm sorry.
10:31I just sort of found it lying around.
10:33No, you keep it.
10:35You have it if you want it.
10:36No, no, no.
10:36I was just hanging on to it for safekeeping.
10:38Please.
10:38You don't have to be shy about it.
10:40I'm not being shy.
10:41Look, Daniel, do you really think Commander Drummond will get back okay?
10:44I don't know.
10:45I mean, it doesn't look very good for our party, does it?
10:48I know it sounds a bit callous.
10:49Yeah, it does.
10:50Just a bit.
10:50But I have worked really hard and it's already like death and destruction in our cabin with
10:54Melody lying on the bed staring at the ceiling.
10:56That's because of the father.
10:58What about him?
10:59Do you know who it is?
11:00It must be somebody she doesn't love.
11:04I think...
11:05You won't tell anybody.
11:06No, go on.
11:07I think it must be a rough miner from Space City.
11:10Somebody who she really doesn't care about.
11:12Somebody who she can never love.
11:15Drummond, I have Victoria for you.
11:17Hello, Victoria.
11:18What's the answer?
11:19Well, as you thought.
11:20There are fairly large quantities of methane and ammonia below the permafrost.
11:24Just my luck.
11:25Charles is prepared to come down in the relief shuttle for you.
11:27Before we all go for bus, I'd better try a mechanical option.
11:30Go on.
11:31Well, I want to try and lift each leg up one at a time and hope the other supports me.
11:36Well, you'll have to lighten your load.
11:38I'll ditch half the samples.
11:40Oh, dear.
11:41Oh, Charles.
11:42What do you think?
11:44Both a try.
11:46Right.
11:47Let us know when you're ready to try the manoeuvre.
11:50Well, I'm going to bed.
11:51I mean, it might take them days to sort out a rescue.
11:54Where were you earlier?
11:57I went to have a little chat with Rebecca.
11:59Oh, yeah?
11:59What's she saying?
12:00She said she'd look after the baby for me while I was working.
12:03You should have it in a corner of Medicom like a dog in a basket.
12:06You're going to have it, then?
12:07No.
12:08Oh.
12:10What's that, Neuron?
12:12Nothing.
12:17Here it comes.
12:21Drummond, we have the picture.
12:22OK.
12:24I'll try number three first.
12:25That should be the one nearest you.
12:26Yep.
12:27We've got that.
12:27Systems on and working.
12:31Number three to retract.
12:36I'm getting negative retract here.
12:38Can you see any movement?
12:39No.
12:40OK.
12:41I'll have another go.
12:41Number three to retract.
12:45Well, how can we tell if it's moving?
12:46It could be coming up a centimetre at a time.
12:50I'm not getting any movement recorded.
12:52Can you see anything?
12:53Nothing's happening.
12:54I'll try the other leg.
12:56Number four to retract.
12:58Here we go.
13:02And again, number four.
13:05It's no good.
13:06It's not going to work.
13:24No.
13:24Don't worry, Anna.
13:25I'll sort out other music.
13:26But I've been through the music library and you'd love some of the old songs we've got.
13:30No old songs, Anna.
13:31Oh, it's stuff from 30 years back.
13:33No.
13:34Philippe likes that music.
13:36He was just so good.
13:36Why are you saying that?
13:38Anyway, I suppose he'll be hanging round over Gabby now that she's in the state.
13:43Well, I wouldn't be at all surprised.
13:44They are good friends, Anna.
13:46Yeah.
13:47And it's so nice to see people that don't just want to hop in and out of bed with everyone.
13:53Don't worry.
13:54She's asleep.
13:55She sleeps a lot.
13:57I'm not asleep.
14:00Oh, good.
14:01How are you?
14:03And I don't hop in and out of bed with everyone.
14:08Nobody said you did.
14:10Melody, have you decided what you're doing about the baby?
14:14Anna, I'm sure you'll be one of the first to know.
14:18I'd help you with the baby, you know.
14:19I'm very good with babies.
14:21I'm sure you're trying to help, but really...
14:23It doesn't matter, you know.
14:25About the child's father and mother.
14:27What matters is the child itself.
14:29Look, I am the child's mother.
14:31I'll be 19 when it's born.
14:33I've never done anything or been anywhere.
14:35Mel, you've been all over the place.
14:37Look at Gabriella.
14:39First woman on G33.
14:41I want to be the first woman somewhere.
14:43I want to make my little bit of space history.
14:45Not sit in a corner nursing a baby.
14:47But you're not thinking about the baby.
14:50It's no use going on at me, Anna.
14:52We don't believe the same things and I'm not going to change.
14:56OK?
14:56How do you know?
14:58Look at Daniel.
14:59Daniel?
15:00What about Daniel?
15:01He didn't used to believe either.
15:05And now...
15:13Can I help?
15:15Hardly.
15:16Have you been here all night?
15:18Yeah.
15:18In 40 minutes, we'll be back over the shuttle.
15:21I know that, Mercedes.
15:22Oh.
15:23How's it going?
15:24I haven't got enough data.
15:26Well, what do you need?
15:27I need to know exactly what that shuttle's resting on.
15:30Now, how am I going to find that out?
15:31Well, I thought we knew the proportion of methane and ammonia.
15:34On average.
15:35Over an area of two square kilometres and the amount's a borderline.
15:39I can't give an answer I'm happy with unless I know exactly what's under that shuttle.
15:43A few percentage points out and he could go up like a fireball.
15:52Could you leave, please?
15:54Can you tell me what's been going on?
15:56Nothing that concerns you. Go on.
15:59Is Captain Drummond going to be all right?
16:01Commander Drummond will be fine.
16:02Is he going to get back here?
16:03Yes, of course.
16:04Is he?
16:06Gabriella, would you please leave the bridge?
16:14It's tough on her not having any family to talk it over with.
16:17You can't really count Timmy.
16:19Well, she doesn't seem to want to talk to me at all.
16:22She still needs to know she can depend on you, whatever she decides.
16:25We obviously don't think I should be pushing her to have this baby.
16:28I'm not sure she takes your views very seriously.
16:31I know, I know.
16:33There are difficulties.
16:34Oh, yeah, of course.
16:35It would be the first baby born in the Jupiter system.
16:37And we haven't any specialist facilities, no experienced doctors or midwives.
16:41The first one ever?
16:42Yes.
16:43And Melody's worried about whether or not the baby will have any problems.
16:46What do you mean?
16:47Inherited conditions, chromosomal abnormalities.
16:49Oh, yeah, but you can test for all those, can't you?
16:51We're trying, but Medicom isn't programmed for it.
16:53Christoph reckons who managed it.
16:55Who actually asked for these tests?
16:57Me.
16:58But she agreed.
16:59It's very sensible.
17:00Yeah, but if she was thinking of not having the baby, she wouldn't be thinking of having
17:03the test, would she?
17:04That's the logical way of looking at it.
17:07I think it's a good sign.
17:09I think it's a very good sign.
17:11Daniel, don't set your heart on this baby.
17:15Victoria says we've got a problem.
17:17Yes, I know, and we've got a problem with the relief shuttle.
17:20What?
17:21I'm only getting 70% efficiency from the main coolant system.
17:24Why did that happen?
17:25It's an old shuttle, Mercedes.
17:26We haven't used it for months.
17:27What's that got to do with it?
17:28It's an emergency vehicle.
17:30It should be tested every few days, shouldn't it?
17:32Well?
17:33Well, what?
17:35Oh, it's a legacy from Elliot, isn't it?
17:37He couldn't be bothered to run the tests on time, could he?
17:39Captain's responsibility, my responsibility.
17:42Well, that's all wonderful, Fimbo.
17:45What do we do now?
17:46Mend the relief shuttle, of course.
17:47We can't mount a rescue and he can't move without blowing himself up.
17:51No, that's not strictly true, is it?
17:53Oh, that girl.
17:53That bloody girl.
18:13Anna?
18:17Here.
18:19You'd better have this back.
18:21Oh, don't be silly, Daniel.
18:22No, no, no, no.
18:22It's yours.
18:23I only sort of borrowed it.
18:24What happened?
18:25Tell me what happened.
18:26Ah, well, long story.
18:28You remember when we had all that stuff with the plasmoids swirling around, right?
18:32You were frightened, yes.
18:33That often happens.
18:35And then you wanted to be saved from the lion's mouth and the burning lake and the outer darkness.
18:39Well, no.
18:40No, not right.
18:41I mean, I don't know.
18:41I wasn't personally that scared, but, I mean, you know, the girls had the wind up them
18:44and I thought I'd jogged them along, you see.
18:46There's nothing to be ashamed of.
18:49Well, I'm sorry I kept it so long I forgot I had it.
18:52You don't need to sell this to me, Daniel.
18:54Look, I'm glad that it's happened.
18:55I'm glad for you.
18:57No.
18:58No, I don't want it.
18:59You have it.
19:00Look, I've got to sort out what we're doing in here for our voyage and party.
19:04Fiona's okay, but she hasn't got a clue when it comes down to organizing.
19:08When I've finished, I'll see what else I can find you, okay?
19:11Um, no.
19:13No, I really don't want anything else, really.
19:20Open.
19:22Hi.
19:25Are you looking for Daniel?
19:26Yeah, I just wondered if he was about.
19:28Oh, I don't know where he is.
19:30I've been in the lab.
19:31Oh.
19:32Sit down.
19:35Wait.
19:37Will you get him on his order, sir?
19:38No, no, don't worry.
19:39It's nothing.
19:39I was just passing.
19:41Yeah.
19:42How's Gabby?
19:43Down a bit of a state.
19:45Yeah, I heard.
19:46Must have been wonderful, though, mustn't it?
19:48When she actually trod on the asteroid.
19:50I mean, it's like all your dreams about space, isn't it?
19:52I'm not sure I had dreams about space.
19:54Oh, come on.
19:54You must have done.
19:55To be the first person to do something.
19:58Give some meaning to life.
20:01All a bit Anna Begani, don't you think?
20:02Yeah.
20:03Well, I bet she's going to be the first woman priest in space.
20:07Open.
20:09I thought you were supposed to be asleep.
20:12I, er...
20:13I went to comms then to see the captain.
20:14I didn't think you like that.
20:17No.
20:17He told me to get lost.
20:19You don't know what's been happening, do you?
20:21I think Victoria's working on it.
20:22What can she do?
20:24She's cracked up to be a brilliant chemist.
20:27Come on, Philippe.
20:27What did she say?
20:28What?
20:29She can't give a proper answer without knowing more about the surface around the shuttle.
20:32Or she's got a very general figures for his composition.
20:35She needs a sample?
20:36Yeah, but of course they're still on the shuttle with Commander Drummond.
20:40Not all of them.
20:44Where did you get it?
20:45Commander Drummond got it for me.
20:47He just got this one tiny piece and told me to tuck it away in my suit.
20:50He's very kind to me.
20:52Yeah.
20:53What a good job he was.
20:56Hello.
20:57Hi.
20:58Do you want anything?
20:59No, I'm not very hungry.
21:02I went to see Rebecca last night.
21:04Yeah, I know.
21:05Oh, yeah?
21:07Look, Melody, you've got to tell me what's going on.
21:10Not now, Anna, please.
21:11I'm trying to talk to Melody.
21:12No, it's okay.
21:13Just a few little pamphlets.
21:15You read them.
21:15And if you want to know anything else, just ask.
21:18What's that?
21:19Oh, it's the life of Tutut Skrebensky,
21:21who died 20 years ago on Moon Station.
21:23It's a very beautiful story.
21:25Very brave man.
21:26Yeah, okay.
21:27Well, um...
21:28Look.
21:29When you've read them, come and tell me, okay?
21:33What on earth has she given you these for?
21:36Tell me, Melody, she's mad.
21:38But, Melody, I know this won't be easy.
21:40That's an understatement, Daniel.
21:43I didn't realise this is going to be the first baby born in the Jupiter system.
21:47What?
21:48Oh, didn't you know?
21:50Are you sure?
21:51That's what Rebecca said.
21:54The thing is, I do love you.
21:58Always have loved you.
22:00Always will.
22:02This doesn't make everything all right, you know.
22:05It's a start.
22:08Will you come to the Voyager and dance with me?
22:11People will talk.
22:13Will you?
22:16Yeah.
22:19She's checked, she's rechecked, she says it's safe.
22:22100%?
22:23Nothing's 100%.
22:2599%?
22:27You only have seven minutes left over your window, this orbit, Commander.
22:31Start your pre-flight checks now.
22:33What's she doing now?
22:33She's checking again.
22:35Nice to know she's confident.
22:38Commencing pre-flight checks.
22:44Yes.
22:44Thimbo?
22:45Yes, Victoria?
22:47Same answer as before.
22:48He's, er...
22:49He's clear to go.
