00:00For the WBA and WBC Super Lightweight Championship of the World, and now, ladies and gentlemen in attendance and boxing
00:08fans joining us around the world, live from Mohegan Sun, it's showtime!
00:22Introducing first the challenger, ladies and gentlemen, on my right, fighting out of the red corner, entering the ring wearing
00:30black trunks, joining us all the way from Berlin, Germany, he weighed in at already 138.5 pounds, he is
00:39undefeated with 28 wins, no losses, 9 wins coming by way of knockout,
00:45he is ranked number one in the world by the WBC, and number four by the WBA, please welcome the
00:521996 Olympic silver medalist, and tonight's challenger, introducing Octay, Cassius Urkal!
01:05And his opponent across the ring, the defending world champion, ready to fight on my left, out of the blue
01:11corner, wearing black trunks with gold trim, fighting out of Sydney, Australia, by way of Seraph, Russia, he weighed in
01:19at 139.5 pounds, his record 26 wins, one loss, one draw, with 22 wins coming by way of knockout,
01:29Ladies and gentlemen, ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the current WBA and WBC super lightweight champion of the world, here
01:37is the thunder from down under, introducing, Kostya Zubu!
01:50And once again, a referee in charge, Frank Cappuccino, now to give instructions, 12 rounds of championship boxing schedule.
01:58Ladies and gentlemen, gentlemen, gentlemen, good evening, world championship fight, I want you to protect yourself at all times, now
02:07I'm looking at the belt, anything below here is a low blow, anything under here is a low blow, I
02:14see his boat, both his touch gloves, touch gloves, good luck.
02:21veteran referee, Frank Cappuccino, with the final instructions, Bobby Ches, keys to victory, certainly.
02:32Kostya Zubu first, the champion, always keep the pressure on, that's his fight game, he goes forward, doesn't fight well
02:39going backwards, also land his power shots, he has power like a middleweight, and use that lethal right hand, he's
02:44knocked so many men out with that right hand.
02:48Kostya Zubu, for Arcal, it's going to be a little bit different, he's going to need to use his speed
02:50to offset some of that Zubu's power, he doesn't have real power, and also, keep a tight defense, Zubu's going
02:56to come, he's got to block, and if he can, push Zubu backwards, Zubu, much like many of the good
03:00fighters, don't fight as well going backwards, him less than others.
03:08Here we go, Kostya Zubu, one of boxing's most relentless fighters, always looking to force a slugfest, power in both
03:18hands, has the power of a middleweight, tremendous tenacity, endurance, in-your-face mentality, constant pressure, and he starts off
03:27that way with her comb.
03:32He's got that hammer-like right, excellent left hooks and uppercuts, and he is a legitimate threat every minute of
03:38every round, and a devastating finisher.
03:40When they use the term throwing punches with bad intentions, Kostya Zubu fits that perfectly, he means to hurt you
03:46with everything that he throws.
03:54Kostya Zubu, one of his last eight wins by KO, that was a stoppage in the tenth, so Zu, who
04:02normally fights with those mean intentions, as Bobby pointed out, can really step in and afford to be brave against
04:08Raquel, who will look to skillfully avoid the power at Zu.
04:15Raquel's usually not too bad a jab, but he doesn't have much in his right hand as of yet, and
04:19I haven't really seen left hooks to the body or head.
04:22Raquel has never been down in his career, he's got a good chin, tight defense, emblematic of German fighters.
04:30Oh, he's a nice stiff jab and left hook, decent right.
04:35There was a decent double left hook, but not a real powerful combination.
04:40That was a nice right hand, though.
04:42Yes, it is.
04:52Cal's got some fans here.
04:56Cal landed a couple decent overhand rights over the jab at Champion Zoo, and they didn't necessarily shake him up,
05:03but they got his attention, that I guarantee you.
05:05Cal actually fought Zap Judo, the amateurs, lost a close decision, he thought it was even.
05:12He's undefeated, but his list of opponents, not a who's who.
05:19He did lots of movement against Kostya Zou.
05:21You got to try to tie him up, use your speed, throw a lot of jabs.
05:25Don't get lured into a street fight.
05:27Pretty good jab there by Irkka got through.
05:30And what you see is after Kostya Zou, so offensive-minded,
05:33after he unloads, sometimes he just stops and looks.
05:35There's the hole. He gets in.
05:40And as you pointed out earlier, every once in a while,
05:42he just forgets about defense.
05:44I'll tell you right now, if he throws a combination,
05:45he's jab-jude imposes, he's going to get hit with a right hook.
05:50Well, that doesn't just got wobbled.
05:54Left hook to the temple, Steven.
05:55That made his legs do a little Leon or Earl.
05:57Momentarily, Daze, was Irkka laid in round one.
06:01Irkka's trunks being held up by Taylor.
06:08Bell!
06:21With his head out.
06:26Between his feet!
06:28With his feet!
06:33You see that left hook to top of the temple.
06:35Look at those legs.
06:36They come out from under him a little bit.
06:37Could be a combination of balance, but I'll tell you right now,
06:40Zu hits hard for his weight,
06:41and that shot to the temple can hurt severely.
06:49Urkel nodding his head as if to say, I'm okay,
06:51which usually means the opposite right there.
07:03You see that left hook one more time.
07:05Not really, not a great left hook,
07:07but in the temple area again, the legs come down.
07:10Urkel comes running out, as does Kostya Zhu,
07:13to begin round number two.
07:16Kostya Zhu with more of a purpose here
07:19as he opens up the second.
07:24May have it on his mind to end things right here.
07:27I'll tell you what, Urkel, I watched the tapes and studied them.
07:30Didn't seem to punch quite this good,
07:32and the tapes maybe worked on power just for Zhu.
07:38But Zhu always very patient, doesn't go in looking for the knockout,
07:42waits for his opening.
07:45Well, he said, too, he said it's going to take six, seven,
07:47maybe even eight or nine rounds to break him down.
07:49He said the guy appears to be tough,
07:50has a tight defense, and fights back.
07:52He breaks you down by hitting very hard.
07:55He bruises you up and hits you in different places.
07:58It just wears you down.
08:01Here's a good right hander, short, crisp right by Zhu that got in.
08:04Urkel counters, though, to the right.
08:06That overhand right is keeping some things for Zhu to at least worry about,
08:11keeping a little respect factor up high.
08:14Zhu's only loss, May of 97, 10th round TKO to Vince Phillips.
08:18Cool Vince, when he gave up the IVF Junior well-to-weight title,
08:22Vince victorious earlier tonight.
08:24Don't look at me. Don't look at me.
08:25With a seventh-round TKO.
08:30Defeating a fighter named Marlon Haynes.
08:33Since the loss to Phillips, Zhu 8-0 all-by-knockout.
08:38He said to Zhu that he became a fighter that night.
08:41He graduated, learned the light from that defeat to Vince Phillips.
08:45Right now, Zhu's being outworked a little bit,
08:48taking his time, not really as active as he should be.
08:50Combination is not flowing.
08:52Looking for one big right hand.
08:56Stop. Break.
09:00Kasih Zhu and his boxing prime,
09:02confident, disciplined, intelligent,
09:05typically tests his opponent's heart and chin
09:08almost from the start.
09:10Under a minute remaining round two.
09:13Kasih Zhu talked at length about his loss to Phillips, Steve.
09:16He said it was a wake-up call for him
09:18because he started to ride on his laurels
09:20and rest on him
09:20and not really do the things that he needed to do no more.
09:24He's 26-1-1 with 22 knockouts.
09:34The draw was a 97 with Leonardo Mas, a technical draw.
09:38He was really not throwing enough combinations.
09:41One at a time, he's looking for the jab in the big right hand,
09:43maybe even one hook or uppercut,
09:44but he's not really throwing combinations.
09:46No, no, no, no, no.
09:48No.
09:49No.
09:52That means no
09:56in any length.
10:03As we head for the bell.
10:05A much better round.
10:06I tell you what, I think that Durkow won this round
10:08by just outworking, Kostya Zhu.
10:17Zhu, right here.
10:18He's back with that.
10:26Let's take our time to move forward.
10:28Let's take our time.
10:31Let's keep on giving this guy a lot of respect.
10:33Let's take our time to move forward.
10:51Let's take our time to move forward.
10:55Interested spectator.
10:56Yeah.
10:56Zab Z turn.
10:57Who is all spouse after his victory earlier.
11:01Kostya Zhu is next if Zhu prevails.
11:05The big showdown November 3rd.
11:07Stay in your corner, son, all the way back.
11:09Should this man cooperate?
11:11Again, Zu comes dashing out to begin round number three.
11:16Zu has been effective when throwing that powerful right,
11:19connecting through the gloves of Urkel.
11:21Go, go, go.
11:27Zu told us he trained very hard.
11:29Can't look ahead to Judah.
11:31Now he's starting to work with a little bit more enthusiasm,
11:34at least it appears.
11:35He worked to the head, he worked to the body,
11:37not just one jab in the right hand.
11:39He told us he studied Urkel very closely.
11:41Pretty good left hook there,
11:43followed by a right by Urkel.
11:45That left hook landed very clean,
11:47and he didn't necessarily shake Zu up,
11:49but really got his attention.
11:50You can see the look in his eyes of concern.
11:54Nice left, sneaky left jab there by Urkel.
11:56Got through the gloves.
12:00Zu's getting a little frustrated, it appears,
12:02with the defensive maneuvering of Urkel.
12:05The tight hands up top,
12:06and he's not able to break through it so easily.
12:09He's getting on his nerves, Steve.
12:12Urkel, 28-0, just nine knockouts,
12:14never on the canvas.
12:16Rated number one by the WBC and WBO.
12:20Former European champ at 140,
12:23and 1996 Olympic silver medalist for Germany.
12:33Zu looks off to me.
12:34He doesn't look like he's in the zone.
12:36He can't seem to find his rhythm.
12:38Not as sharp as we've seen him in the past.
12:41Last with Shambay Mitchell.
12:43Before that, Julio Cesar Chavez.
12:45Before that, Miguel Angel Gonzalez.
12:48And on and on,
12:50where he just looked ferocious.
12:56And the crowd beginning to turn a bit.
13:00As we come up on the final minute of round three.
13:08A lot of folks just thought that Zu,
13:10not a fast starter,
13:12would come in and tear this guy apart.
13:13Once again, dazes Urkel momentarily.
13:16I think that was a combination,
13:18two of your feet getting tangled, Steve.
13:19I don't know that he hit him as good as it appeared.
13:27Some of those punches are getting through
13:29by the German of Turkish descent.
13:33One, two, three, two, three.
13:37One, two, three.
13:38One, two, three.
13:38Judah now pressing forward,
13:39lands a right to the head.
13:42One, Zu.
13:43I should say Zu.
13:43One, two, three, two, three.
13:47One, two, three, two, three, two, three.
13:51Nice right up.
13:52Got on the inside by Zu.
13:53But again, he looks like something's not right.
13:56His timing's not right.
13:57He's not as busy as he used to be.
13:59And granted, Urkel's working hard to keep him off.
14:02Maybe winning the round.
14:04Well, perhaps we'll find out later what was going on
14:06in the mind of Kostya Zu.
14:08Does he have Zab Judah on his mind?
14:11Is it the awkward style of Urkel that is producing this display by Zu?
14:24You watch Kostya Zu coming forward.
14:26Now, he's constantly using the jab.
14:27He's using the jab.
14:28But Urkel's blocking it nice with the right hand.
14:30And he's throwing his little hook in here.
14:32And he's landing.
14:33And Zu's not countering him back.
14:37There he's starting to go by.
14:38There's the hook up top.
14:39That one misses.
14:40Again, Zu with just a jab and the hook again.
14:42Landing clean.
14:43Zu throwing one jab at a time.
14:44It's just not working.
14:47Now, you watch on the inside.
14:49Right up in here.
14:50Uppercut.
14:51Uppercut.
14:51Popping the head back of the challenger.
14:54He rips that uppercut right up on the inside.
14:59Okay, we missed the uppercut.
15:01But it did happen.
15:05Well, as we've said in the past, if there's any one weakness for Zu, he does forget about
15:10his defense from time to time.
15:11Getting too focused and anxious on offense.
15:18In the loss to Phillips, there was no defense.
15:21Now, he's coming on stronger.
15:22That was a big right hand.
15:23He got hit with a little hook coming back.
15:25Urkel showed a great chin.
15:27Zu looks like he wants to do a lot of damage here in round four.
15:33No knockdowns thus far.
15:37It's as if he got the wake-up call and said, enough is enough.
15:42Because it's been fairly lackluster to this point on the part of Zu.
15:45And Zab Judah has to be loving what he's watching.
15:49Because he's probably saying to himself, well, if this is the costume they put in front of me,
15:54I can do okay.
15:58I thought the last couple of rounds Urkel was out working Zu.
16:01First round I thought was Zu's.
16:03He came out strong in this round, but again, it's a matter of being at work.
16:07One big shot does not a round make.
16:10And left uppercut got in by Urkel to the apex of Zu's chin.
16:15Judah may be wondering to himself, well, with my speed, I'll have no problem handling this guy.
16:22Well, I'll tell you, coming off this so far, if you had to handicap it,
16:26the speed looks like it might outdo the power.
16:31Because thus far, the power has not been there for Kostya Zu so far.
16:40That could change in a moment.
16:42Ah! Good, good, good. Come on, come on, come on.
16:46I'm putting him in there for a second.
16:46Oh.
16:52Urkel holding his own to this point.
16:55And holding a little, Akashi Zu's with him.
17:04Right.
17:08left hook that got through to the jaw by zoo but ercal is very game he comes charging forward
17:15you know what ercal first of all he starts he initiates and his speed is able to get him in
17:21and out before zoo has a good time to counter solidly and his speed is offsetting the power
17:25like right there ercal once again pressing the attack and leading with his punches not countering
17:37so moving slowly very deliberately a left hand got hit by ercal
17:42zoo is having trouble at timing the speed of ercal it's causing him a problem if it's causing him a
17:48problem imagine what zapp judah would do yes and two annoying frank cappuccino by hitting on the
17:54break stop break crowd very quiet right now there's some blood lower lip of zoo
18:07body shot by zoo a right hand to the fifth section by zoo
18:12body shot by uncont disruptive golf by conducted level
18:21best punch of the night especially forство successfully termed right hand and you can see the neck and face just
18:27shake
18:28that right hand but to his creditor car comes back with punches
18:33beautiful camera work let's get it over to jim gray all right thank you very much was ab judah who
18:39we just
18:39saw a fight a little bit earlier. You're watching this fight. What do you think of that right hand?
18:43I mean, you know, it's a good punch, but, um, you know, he got to work on getting his defense,
18:46you know, a punch and moving, because, um, if that's all he got when he fight me in November,
18:50it's going to be a short night, you know what I mean?
18:52You think your speed will be able to handle him based on what you've seen so far this evening?
18:56I mean, you know, Kazu is very good, you know what I mean? I don't want to, um,
19:00let, I don't want to underestimate Kazu. You know, Kazu is a very strong fighter. He's very
19:03physical, and, um, he's going to come to fight, but, um, I'm here to win, man, forever. Super
19:07Judo. Certainly three of your last four fights up until tonight, he might have had the same
19:11impression of you. Right, he might have thought so, but now he's showing up. Every fight that let me
19:16wait, I get stronger and stronger and stronger and better and better. Quickly analyze this here for us
19:21as you watch this. You know, Kazu is getting more, Kazu is getting more, um, you know, um,
19:27he's getting, yeah, he's getting more confident now about what he's going, what he's going to do now,
19:30so now he's going to walk to him with a good, strong jab, look, land that big, that big right
19:34hand.
19:34Are you surprised that Urkel's done so well? Well, I mean, I mean,
19:37I figure anybody with good, with good movement and fast hands, they're going to do good against Kazu.
19:42All right. Hey, Shambay, Shambay showed that, you know what I mean?
19:45We'll check in with you after the fight, Deb.
19:48Let's get it back to Steve Albert. Quite a blow right there, Steve.
19:51And a big smile on the face, Jim, of Kazu, indicating he's all right, but sometimes you have to wonder
19:56about that.
19:57But it wasn't really the punch. If you watch it, the feet got tangled and the arms got tangled and
20:01it was more of a swinging throw than it was a punch.
20:03That would be not a clean blow to cause that much damage.
20:07Got everybody's attention.
20:09A very diplomatic Sab Judah with Jim Gray, although a confidently diplomatic Sab Judah, pretty much echoing what we said
20:18earlier.
20:22Under two minutes remaining in round five.
20:24Let's see how the folks at Press Row have it.
20:27Ron Gorgeous, Boston Globe, Scott Schaefer, FightNews.com, Bill Tavares, New London, Derry.
20:33They all have Zu ahead through four.
20:35And I have it even, so maybe I'm not sure. I know what I'm doing.
20:39I think Zu got outworked in the middle rounds and started to get back on track with the big right
20:43hand last round.
20:44Ron Gorgeous, Scott Schaefer, had her pal winning in the third.
20:49Come on, come on, come on out of here. Come on out. Let him go. Let him go. Break.
20:54Now a lot of holding.
20:55When I say break, break, man.
21:01A welt began to appear under Urkel's right eye late in round four. You see that developing.
21:13See, he's just at work. He's doing it inside. He's using speed for more punches.
21:23Again, Zapp Judah's confidence on the sidelines has to be building immensely watching this.
21:31But he knows not to get false confidence.
21:34Oh, a little head move there by Urkel right into the chest of Zu.
21:41Here's the welt under the right eye of Urkel. You can see clearly now.
21:45Straight right hand got through by Zu right on the head.
21:48But it's one and done, Steve. He's throwing one, one and two at a time.
21:51Not more than two or three punches ever.
21:53And that's shocking because Sakakashi Zu has always shown to be in good shape.
21:57Devastating and a great finish.
21:58Yeah, that's not like Zu.
22:00Usually punches bunches.
22:03Well, they both throw at the same time, but Zu had more effect.
22:07And back comes Urkel with a right-left combination to the head.
22:12Got a lot of resolve.
22:13No.
22:14Octave Urkel.
22:16No.
22:17No.
22:25No.
22:26I'm going to show what it looked like a big punch, but it was more of a trip.
22:47Right here you see his feet, he just trips over his feet, that's all.
22:50Not really, not really a big punch, more of a trip.
22:54Look at it from the overhead camera, right here, just a trip, and then his right foot
22:58tripped him again to continue the trip, which made him appear to be staggered.
23:05The fans got a rise out of it, but as you can see on the replay, and I think Bobby
23:11had
23:11it right when we first saw it, it was the result of feet getting tangled up, and a lot of
23:16pushing.
23:18But nothing really got through there to hurt Kostya Zou.
23:23Kostya Zou and Akhtay Urkal, Zou 26-1-1, 22 knockouts, 10-1-1 in world title fights.
23:33Urkal 28-0, nine knockouts.
23:36Beautiful combination of Urkal, lead right hand, double left hook, pushing Zou backward,
23:40keeping him going backward, one of my keys to victory.
23:43Certainly not the best we've seen Kostya Zou.
23:46Stop, stop, stop, stop.
23:47See, a guy like Zab Judah can go backwards and kill you on the way in, or beat you to
23:51death
23:51coming forward.
23:52This is not the type of fighter that can beat you up as badly going backward, if at all.
23:59And uncharacteristically, so far performance by Kostya Zou.
24:07Break, break, ah-ah.
24:10And on the break, Urkal, with an overhand right.
24:14Not nice.
24:18Zou with a short left to the head.
24:28Well, this is about the point where you have figured that Kostya Zou would really
24:32turn it up.
24:33I figure we start to break him hard to the body, as well as to head in the first three
24:38or four rounds, then around, give or take, six or seven, that maybe Urkal will start to
24:43fade, but he's not fading a bit, and here we are, you know, we'll end around six.
24:47Well, there hasn't been the usual accumulative attack to the body and head that we see from
24:53Zou, thus Urkal is hanging around and still in pretty fair shape.
24:57Zou is hanging around and still in pretty fair shape.
25:03Not the normal, relentless siege of Kostya Zou.
25:08Hate to keep harping on it, but it's surprising.
25:12Particularly against the relatively unknown, although number one, Urkal.
25:16Zou is hanging around and still in pretty fair shape.
25:18Break, break, break.
25:19Right now, based on the accomplishments that Zou has in the bank, Urkal Stark should go up.
25:27Not many would have, uh, banked on that.
25:38Zou missed with the right, a glancing blow on the chin.
25:44And that right was blocked by Kostya.
25:46Not the left, though, that got through to the chin of Zou.
25:51The count landing with the right hand, back comes the right hand, counterpunched by Kostya Zou.
25:55Well, one and done, he just lands the one and doesn't come back.
25:58He did not follow it up.
26:02Final seconds, right?
26:03Break, break.
26:14Stop.
26:20Let's go to Jim Gray with our new analyst.
26:22All right, thank you very much, Steve.
26:25Zab, are you getting nervous?
26:26There's an awful big payday on the line here.
26:27And, uh, right now, Kostya's not living up to his end of the bargain.
26:31I mean, yeah, I mean, I'm getting, I'm getting kind of nervous.
26:33Kostya, I don't know what he's doing.
26:34He's not moving his head.
26:35He's acting like he's in another world right now.
26:37But, um, I don't know.
26:38I mean, I hope, hopefully he'll put, he'll put together and come up with a deficit knockout punch.
26:42My memory serves me right.
26:44You fought Urkel before, correct?
26:46Yeah, well, I was an alternate on the 19th Olympic team.
26:49And a month before the Olympics, we had a duel meet with the Germans.
26:52And you beat him, right?
26:53Yeah, and I beat him.
26:55And so, I'm no stranger to this guy.
26:57If he wins, we can get it on, too.
26:58It don't matter to me.
26:59I'm taking out all comings.
27:00You hurt, come at me.
27:02As we take a look at the replay here of just what went on,
27:06Kostya Zou is, uh, backpedaling.
27:09Yeah, I never seen that.
27:11I mean, I didn't even fight him yet, and he doing that.
27:13Damn, I thought I was going to be the first one to do that.
27:15Oh, man.
27:17All right, Steve, back to you.
27:18We'll get some more analysis later.
27:20Steve and Bobby.
27:20All right, Jim, and, uh, Zapp, thank you very much.
27:24This fight lasts longer than many expected.
27:28Arkell looks like he's gaining confidence as we hit the halfway mark.
27:34Bobby unofficially, and Arkell comes on strong here.
27:37Ah, ah, no, no, no, no.
27:38How do you have it, quickly?
27:39Well, I'll tell you what, I have, uh, three rounds of three,
27:41so this is an even fight.
27:43Wow.
27:43I think Arkell is really coming to fight,
27:46and he's just outworked.
27:46You see, like, in that sequence?
27:47He's just outworked.
27:49Got Shizu for the first half a minute of the first round.
27:52It's all Arkell.
27:57Break.
28:02Zou told us he trained extremely hard for this fight,
28:06that he was not to be looking ahead to Zapp,
28:09not thinking beyond Zapp Judah.
28:12He said, I studied Arkell very closely.
28:14He knows all about him.
28:16Break.
28:16What?
28:17Uh-uh, no.
28:18When I say break, stop.
28:19You got to think twice after seeing this exhibition.
28:22Oh, good left hand by Arkell to the chin.
28:27Well, he nailed Zou with that one,
28:29and it slowed him in his tracks.
28:34Zou, it's just a poing jab, getting nowhere with that.
28:37Doesn't follow it up with the right hand.
28:38When we went south of the border,
28:39I was just going to say it.
28:40Zou pointed it out to Arkell.
28:41They touch gloves and make up.
28:43Stop, stop, stop.
28:43He said that's a no-no.
28:45They're going too low.
28:46And Frank Cappuccino cautioning Arkell for the low blows.
28:50Break.
28:51Inside, quick right hand by Zou.
28:54And a shot to the midsection by Costia.
28:57Yeah, but then you see Arkell comes back with three or four punches.
29:00He's out working, Zou, and it's just shocking me that he's allowing it.
29:06A very surprising turn of events here at Mohegan Sun,
29:09with a minute remaining in round seven.
29:11It has not been Costia Zou's night.
29:14Her count is making him look bad.
29:17Stop. Uh-uh.
29:18Uh-oh.
29:21No good by Costia Zou, hitting on the break again.
29:25I mean, none of that.
29:26I think they were both guilty of that one a little bit, Steve.
29:28How much of that is frustration now, Bobby?
29:30It's got to be that.
29:31I'm sure that's part of it.
29:40There's that jab.
29:42That's a little bit of a harder jab by Zou,
29:44but once again, holding off with the right hand.
29:47I'll tell you what, much harder jab.
29:48He landed five or six of them out of the seven or eight thrown very well.
29:52And a good right hand by Akhtair Kao.
29:59Kind of a sneaky right that gets through from time to time.
30:06There's a double jab by Zou, but again, holding back on the right.
30:10Oh, look.
30:11It's almost if there's something wrong with his right hand.
30:13And again, a throw-and-low.
30:17Keep him up, man.
30:18Keep him up, man.
30:28Keep him up, man.
30:35Keep him up, man.
30:56Keep him up.
30:59You got to make sure he don't get a shot away on us.
31:05Be careful pulling out after something.
31:11CASH ON THE CHIN THERE AS YOU CAN SEE THE GOOD CLOSE-UP.
31:17WE ENTER INTO ROUND NUMBER EIGHT.
31:20CAL SNEAKING THAT LEFT JAB OVER SUE'S LEFT.
31:24AS THE RUSSIAN SLASH AUSTRALIAN TENDS TO HOLD IT A LITTLE LOW.
31:30AND FRANK CAPUCCINO HAS HAD TO WARNER CAL A COUPLE OF TIMES,
31:33TWO, THREE TIMES ABOUT LOW BLOWS.
31:39AND FRANK CAPUCCINO WANT HIM FOR THE SECOND TIME.
31:41I GOT A FUNNY FEELING THAT'S WHAT COULD RESULT IN A POINT.
31:44AND THE WAY THINGS ARE GOING HERE, A BIT POINT.
31:47BECAUSE THIS ONE IS VERY TIGHT.
31:49RIGHT NOW, IT APPEARS THAT AZU IS A LITTLE MORE FOCUSED ON STUFFING THE JAB HARD,
31:54BUT HE'S NOT REALLY FOLLOWING THE COMBINATION.
31:56THERE HAVE BEEN VERY FEW LEFT HOOKS HE'S THROWN.
32:02NO KNOCKDOWNS.
32:03KASIA ZU HAS BEEN DOWN FOUR TIMES IN HIS CAREER.
32:06URKAL HAS NEVER BEEN ON THE CAMPUS.
32:15AGAIN, IT'S URKAL WHO'S PRESSING FORD.
32:17NO, NO, NO, NO. STEP BACK. STEP BACK. STEP BACK.
32:19ZU ALMOST IN A FUNK.
32:25JUST CERTAINLY NOT HIMSELF TONIGHT, THUS FAR.
32:31BREAK, BREAK.
32:32BODY SHOT WITH THE LEFT BY URKAL.
32:37SOMETHING ELSE AT ZU'S CORNER SAID DON'T PULL UP WITH YOUR HEAD UP.
32:40KEEPS DOING IT JUST LIKE THAT.
32:42LEANING, TRYING TO LEAN OUT OF THE WAY.
32:44URKAL NOT THINKING HE CAN BE REACHING.
32:45HIS HEAD'S UP AND HE GETS HIT.
32:46AND THERE'S ALMOST NO WAY TO REBOUND FROM THAT BECAUSE YOU'RE OFF BALANCE.
32:49BACK COMES KASTA ZU.
32:51HE WOBBLES URKAL.
32:53HE SAYS, BRING IT ON.
32:54AND URKAL'S GLOVES TOUCH THE FLOOR.
32:56I'M NOT SURE OFF THE PUNCH, BUT HIS GLOVES TOUCH THE FLOOR.
32:59ZU KNOWS URKAL'S IN TROUBLE.
33:03URKAL BEING WARNED FOR A HOLD.
33:05BACK OF THE HEAD.
33:09AND NOW KASTA ZU ON THE PROWL.
33:14WITH ABOUT A MINUTE REMAINING IN ROUND 8.
33:16THE ECONOMY OF PUNCHES FROM ZU HAS TO BE TOTALLY BAMBOOZLED.
33:20I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON.
33:21YEAH, WE'RE DAGILLED HERE AT RINKSIDE AS TO WHY ZU DOESN'T JUMP ON URKAL
33:26AFTER GETTING HIM IN A BIT OF TROUBLE THERE.
33:28HE'S LETTING HIM OFF THE HOOK ONCE AGAIN.
33:30GOT TO KEEP THEM HANDS LOOSE, MAN.
33:35THAT LEFT, THE HOOK WAS BLOCKED BY URKAL.
33:39I SAW SOMETHING IN KAL'S EYES A FEW MINUTES AGO, STEVE.
33:43I THINK THERE'S A PIECE OF HIS SYSTEM THAT'S STARTING TO FADE.
33:47AND I SEE SOMETHING THAT'S JUST CHANGED IN HIS EYES.
33:52ZU IS TRYING TO INFLIC MORE DAMAGE HERE AT THE END OF ROUND 8.
33:55STEP BACK, STEP BACK.
33:58ZU LOOKING MUCH MORE CONFIDENT NOW AS HE DINKS TO THE BODY WITH THE LEFT.
34:05FLICKS THE JAB.
34:06THIS IS WITH THE RIGHT CROSS.
34:08BACK COMES ERKAL, BUT BLOCKED BY ZU.
34:16STOP.
34:19A BETTER ROUND FOR THE CHAMPION.
34:26ALL RIGHT, MATE.
34:28TWO MORE.
34:31I THINK THIS BASE CAN HAVE ONE MORE GALA TO THIS ROUTE.
34:33So we've got to be careful.
34:34We've got to meet him, make him miss, and make him pay.
34:37Okay, Klaus?
34:38Simple as that made.
34:39We'll step right on him this time, mate.
34:42Jimmy.
34:44Stepping up the pace, doing what he should have been doing earlier.
34:48Double jab, right hand, the hook.
34:50There's another jab, another right hand, a body shot right over the top.
34:54Seemed to stun our cow a little bit.
34:57But here we see a 5, 6, 7, 8 punch combination.
35:00We've seen none of that all night until now.
35:05I'm trying to get in here, if he can just back up a little.
35:09Very calm and composed in that Kostya Zoo corner.
35:13Do you think we are beginning to reach a point, though, in the fight, Bobby,
35:16where there should be more of a sense of urgency, though?
35:19No, I think Kostya's starting to get in a position to close out the fight.
35:24And I don't mean necessarily by knockout,
35:26but you can see her cow fading in the last round of battle.
35:29Not coming forward at all, really fading and punches put out.
35:32I think conditioning a big factor experience right now through taking over.
35:36Nobody knows Kostya like this corner better.
35:40So that's the way they operate there.
35:43As we begin round nine, and Zoo starts fast.
35:47Beautiful jab by Zoo, but again holds off on the right.
35:53He did not offer up the combination like he did more of in the last round.
35:59Stalking Herkel.
36:03And hammering away.
36:07He's looking too much to really zone the shot in.
36:10I mean, he's looking to, like, zero hit, pinpoint it.
36:13He needs to just throw him, let him fly.
36:14And Herkel unleashes a quick right hand.
36:17That comes Zoo with the jab.
36:20But no right.
36:24We'll check Freshro scoring once again.
36:26Ron Borges, Boston Globe, Scott Schaefer, FightNews.com.
36:30Bill Tavares to London Day.
36:32Again, Zoo ahead, but very close.
36:37Particularly on one card.
36:41Where it was separated by just one point.
36:44Which would mean that that particular first round, that one round even.
36:47Stop, stop, stop, stop.
36:49Middle rounds are going to Herkel.
37:17There's an attrition factor starting, I think, to tell.
37:20On Herkel, it's not telling on Zoo yet.
37:23Zoo fights this type of fight all the time.
37:25A rough, physical fighter.
37:27And I think Herkel is finally getting a taste of some real tired fatigue pain.
37:33Well, now he's bruising up Herkel.
37:36Wearing him down.
37:39But a very game, Herkel.
37:41Standing right in there.
37:45But these punches are obviously beginning to weigh Herkel down.
37:54Just touching, touching, jabbing.
37:56Now a right-hand, a whipping right by Zoo.
37:58He's pretty much having his way now.
38:03May not be anything too overwhelmingly dramatic,
38:06but he is certainly wearing him out.
38:09But he's neutralizing all the punches
38:11that was at one time being thrown by Herkel.
38:13He can't muster up now.
38:14And he's pushing him back,
38:16whereas Cal was pushing him back.
38:19Well, should Zoo win,
38:21the big unification showdown
38:24is likely to be November 3rd
38:26here at Mohegan Sun
38:27in Uncasville, Connecticut.
38:29And two very interested spectators,
38:32Zab Judah on the right,
38:33the man who will fight Zoo,
38:36should Zoo prevail tonight,
38:37and Boris Zoo,
38:39the father of Kostya Zoo.
38:47Kostya Zoo, I'll tell you right now,
38:49he's not posing a threat.
38:50He's at Zab Judah in Zab's eyes.
38:52You can tell by his speech,
38:53and I can tell by his performance.
38:55Well, all you have to do is back off.
39:00And we're in a fight here, folks.
39:02Keep that under check.
39:03Josh, be tired of course.
39:04Don't let him get another shot away on us, okay?
39:07Be smart of my mate.
39:09I've got him, Rob.
39:09Be called him.
39:12Well, he was a Zoo may be ahead
39:14what you would have to call
39:16an uninspiring performance.
39:20Good work.
39:21Thanks.
39:24Round 10 always pays
39:25to have the thesaurus in front of him.
39:27He's got a good one.
39:29He's got a good one.
39:31He's got a good one.
39:31Nice feet!
39:33Kostya Zoo, coming from his home
39:36in Sydney, Australia,
39:38to the United States two weeks ago
39:40in advance of this fight.
39:43Something that Zoo does
39:44that is probably horrible to do
39:46for the average fighter,
39:47but for a guy like Zab Judah
39:49would be a little bit shorter.
39:49Come on, come on, come on, come on.
39:51I didn't know.
39:52He moves straight back.
39:53Zoo is so quick.
39:55Zab Judah is so quick.
39:56You can step to him
39:57and hurt him badly.
39:58Well, it's pretty apparent right now
40:00that Zoo might be respecting
40:03or Cal's punching power
40:05a little too much.
40:06Cal only has nine knockouts.
40:08Stop.
40:08Certainly none at this level
40:10of competition.
40:14Break.
40:15Zoo was kind of coy
40:17about his tactics
40:17when he spoke with us,
40:18but really hasn't shown
40:20any of those secret tricks
40:22he planned on using.
40:23Break.
40:28Again, the pace
40:29really slowing down now.
40:31Crowd very quiet.
40:33Earlier, Zab Judah
40:35ended matters rather briskly
40:37for the third round knockout.
40:43Fair exchange there
40:44in the center of the ring.
40:46Break.
40:49Judah's knockout
40:51over Denmark's Alan Vester,
40:52the IVF number one contender,
40:54previously undefeated,
40:57but certainly unheralded.
40:58Hadn't have fought
40:59the level of competition
41:01that Zab had fought.
41:02A little bang of heads there
41:05and Kostya's holding
41:08the left eye area.
41:10They banged heads,
41:10but it was just one
41:12of those incidental things.
41:14We approach the final minute.
41:16Round 10.
41:17Not many thought
41:18it would go this far.
41:19Scheduled for 12.
41:21WBCW be a super lightweight title
41:23on the line.
41:28It's all Kostya Zoo chasing now,
41:30but still not throwing
41:32the punches and combinations
41:33that we normally used to see him throw.
41:38Not the Kostya Zoo
41:40we have come to know
41:41over the years.
41:43You notice how he leans
41:44out with his head?
41:45You can't do that
41:45with an average fighter,
41:47maybe.
41:48With a good fighter,
41:49no.
41:49With a great fighter like Judah,
41:51absolutely impossible to do
41:53to get away with.
41:53A lot of movement now
41:55from Urquhart.
42:01Urquhart with an awkward style.
42:05See that little lean?
42:07That's just not good.
42:08He keeps his head up high,
42:09his hands are down.
42:10He's getting caught a lot.
42:15Final seconds of the tent.
42:18And you hear the Boo Birds again
42:20here at Mohegan Sun.
42:27a tough outing for costa zoo let's go back to zab judah with jim gray all right thank you very
42:37much
42:37steve well zab are you surprised at how easily costa zoo is being hit tonight well i mean i mean
42:43i always i always knew it from watching previous fights you know that's the reason why vence
42:48fells knocked him out because i mean he's a straight uh a one-dimensional fighter i mean he's he got
42:53very good power and stuff but he never moves move his head you know that's got to be good news
42:57for you
42:57i mean seeing this like i said come november i'm gonna show everybody i'm gonna shock the world
43:03for those who with me you're gonna be happy for those who not you're gonna be sad well tell us
43:06exactly what you would do here uh in these final championship rounds if you were your cow i mean
43:12you gotta you gotta you gotta pick it up you gotta counter punch you know you know i'm saying you
43:15gotta use your you use your defense stay inside with him slip slip slip slip and counter you know
43:20i mean use your jab to back him up throw punches to offset him do you believe he has enough
43:24to win
43:24this fight or cal no no way he's just about him right now that's it it's a matter of time
43:29and i'd be
43:30surprised if you hit him with a clean shot it's all over all right we appreciate it talk to you
43:36in a bit steve
43:37the confidence of zab judah building minute by minute thank you jim as he sees this performance by costa zoo
43:44which is less than inspiring
43:49for most folks thought that it would be an even fight going in but the handicappers will
43:54probably give the edge to judah after seeing this performance by zoo in november the handicappers
43:59earlier uh in the month had zoo uh actually actually a dog i think eight to five a nine to
44:06five dog
44:08he had sued the underdog yes
44:15left hook that was guarded by
44:18so he got the glove up in time he got hit with a good right hand there too again he's
44:21leaning back
44:22but he's not using his legs defensively just leaning can't do that
44:27her cow making zoo look bad tonight very rare frank
44:36last time he didn't look good was probably four years ago when he lost to vince phillips
44:42stop stop he also had some questionable moments against hurtado who dropped him twice
44:48after he hurt hurtado he ran with his arms down and hurtado clocked him on the way in
44:52he got up ran into another one and went down twice in the same round the fine cuban fighter
45:06he just restrained held back very uncharacteristic he may actually be tired steve it may be something
45:14we've all overlooked that he just doesn't have the juice today to do what he normally does
45:18stop lastly we all know there's that thing called growing old sometimes you grow old in the day this
45:24might be his day 31 years old it's possible break most people would be under the impression he's in
45:33his boxing prime right now but anything's possible could be a combination of things he looks tired
45:41he could be thinking ahead to zap judah and it could be the awkward style of her cow break
45:51he's putting all of these late rounds in the bank so i don't think a decision is going to be
45:55in jeopardy
45:55here now but he's right i'll tell you what he's just not looking good he's doing in sort of a
46:01tough
46:01way right now because the spot move would be for zoo to stay away from her cow since he'll score
46:06a clear
46:07victory on points should he play it safe or try to go in for the knockout to uh try to
46:13uh wipe
46:14away the uninspiring performance number one he doesn't know how to play it safe number two he
46:18can't fight going backwards from boxing to the outside number three that's his fight and he four
46:23he can't be sure it's going to judge his mind okay
46:28does that tell you that nailed it
46:47he has that great right hand as he counters with it so often
46:52this man does not fall and watch now he steps back he just stares at
46:58another look at it on the retreat comes back in with the counter right hand
47:03not a great right hand if you watch his right foot his right foot was lifted in the air a
47:07little
47:07bit so that that was an arm punch although it was gleaming christ while he appears to be
47:13ahead on points you would think that he would want to salvage his pride and in this
47:22in exciting fashion talking of course about costume they touch gloves for the 12th round
47:33break no no
47:38so once again very tentative
47:43right hand over the top by her cow that's scored that's what happens when the cost of zoo in that
47:49is
47:49the second one
47:50oh a straight right right on the button by her cow
47:58zoo got staggered momentarily
48:01he just caught our county on the way in but our county right now is going for brook steve
48:05you got to tip your head to it you really do you have to give tremendous credit to the
48:10challenger octaier cow here another right hand by our cattle that connects
48:15No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
48:16Right on the jaw of Kostya Zou.
48:19Zou's getting hammered here on the 12th round.
48:22With two minutes to go,
48:26Urkel continues to come forward.
48:28A left hand by Urkel that scored.
48:31A right that got in.
48:33I'm convinced that Zou is tired
48:37and that he just does not have his rhythm today.
48:45And you can hear them in the Zou corner
48:47off to our right saying,
48:48Come on, Kostya!
48:49A very worried corner.
48:53A little smile from Zou.
48:59That right was blocked by Kostya.
49:01Stop! Stop!
49:03And both are exhausted.
49:04I don't think Zou lost the fight,
49:06but he didn't do anything to help his stock.
49:07Oh, no.
49:09The right and the left hand just missed by Urkel,
49:11but he comes forward again.
49:13Urkel winning over a lot of fans here tonight,
49:15and Zou's stock goes down.
49:24A left hand by Urkel to the chin.
49:27I don't think I can say it enough times,
49:28Kostya Zou keeps going straight back,
49:30never out to one side or the other,
49:32slipping side to side, straight back.
49:34He gets caught on the tail end of every punch
49:36Urkel throws because he rushed in.
49:39Urkel dominating the 12-foot final round.
49:44A good left hand by Urkel.
49:46It was a right-left combination.
49:47The left scored.
49:54And a right cross by Urkel.
49:57Now.
50:00Rock in the heart plays Kostya Zou.
50:03You might want to play it safe in your head,
50:05but if you don't fight back, you'll look even worse.
50:07Double left took by Zou.
50:09Finally comes alive.
50:10There's another left with 10 seconds to go by Zou.
50:16Well, they're gonna both end up standing
50:19for quite a finish.
50:23That's it.
50:27The crowd was definitely behind the challenger,
50:31Octay Urkel.
50:36Uninspiring is the word you used before.
50:38I'm gonna use it again.
50:39Very uninspiring.
50:41By Kostya Zou.
50:43Urkel gets the salute from the crowd
50:45as he jumps on the ropes.
50:48And he has to feel very proud of himself.
50:51A tough night for Kostya Zou.
50:56It's now the hands of the three judges.
51:00Frank or Richard Flaherty of Graintree, Mass.
51:04Julie Letterman, West Nyack, New York,
51:06and Terry O'Connor from London, England.
51:13Really be interested to hear the words of Kostya Zou
51:15after this one.
51:18I can hardly wait.
51:20Urkel being hugged there by his trainer,
51:22Fritz Zidunek, who knew Kostya Zou
51:24very well from the amateurs.
51:26So they did a good job of homework against Zou.
51:32Urkel had a game plan.
51:34Did a good job.
51:37And a very difficult night for Kostya Zou.
51:39Who would have thought this would go the distance?
51:45And Zou was hurt in this fight.
51:48Well, especially this last round,
51:50Urkel comes out, follows him, just follows him.
51:53Again, Zou just going backward.
51:55That's more of a trip off the ropes and feet,
51:57but he got hit clean there with several punches.
52:00And Zou did rally, but he didn't come close
52:02to even making this round even.
52:06Nice stuff of a shotgun jab.
52:13And again, not much there.
52:16Actually outworks him in punches.
52:18Not all of him landing.
52:20Gets stuffed with a nice jab from the challenger.
52:23He just looked awful tonight.
