Edwin Rosario defends his WBA Jr Welterweight title against No 1. contender Akinobu Hiranaka on Showtime Boxing
Transcript
00:00That's very much 30 coming up former three-time lightweight champion Edwin Chapo Rosario here at El Torrio in Mexico City versus number one ranked Akinobu here in Aka
00:10And for Rosario it's been a rollercoaster career having major problems holding on to his titles
00:16Tonight he defends the WBA junior weatherweight crown for the first time
00:30In the 1980s Edwin Rosario was constantly shadowing the World Lightweight Championship
00:37At age 20 he captured the WBC lightweight title from Jose Luis Ramirez
00:43After defending his crown twice Chapo lost it back to Ramirez in 1984
00:48His ring skills made him a perennial top contender even though the lightweight ranks were bulging with talent
00:55He nearly regained the WBC title losing a split decision to Hector Camacho
01:02Fortunately for Rosario he got an opportunity to fight for the WBA version later that year
01:08He took full advantage of the opportunity knocking out Livingstone Bramble
01:12Unfortunately for Rosario Julio Cesar Chavez snatched that title away from him 14 months later
01:25The crown that kept slipping away from him came within his grasp once again in 1989
01:31Rosario KO'd Anthony Jones in the sixth round to win the vacant WBA title
01:40History would repeat itself as Chapo would lose that title to Juan Nazario in his first defense
01:47He's back on top again after defending Loretto Garza for the WBA junior welterweight championship
01:54We shall see if Chapo really owns this title or if he is merely renting
01:59All right, they knock on Rosario inconsistent over the years
02:09The question often is which Rosario will show up
02:11And that's the main problem you're going to see tonight
02:13You see getting the title he's so
02:15Motivated and he's such a good fighter that he gets the title
02:19Then he goes to sleep and forgets about training properly and they take the title away from him
02:22He's got a great motivation day here
02:25Camacho is here at ringside to watch to see what Chavez is going to do
02:29That's the big fight and he gets the winner if he looks good here tonight
02:32So he should be motivated
02:34If not, then you're going to see a very tough fight because out of all the Japanese fighters
02:39This is the one that came over that's the best
02:40And they bring with them a tradition of very hard fighting
02:44That goes straight at you, which should be to
02:46Rosario's advantage because he can punch so well
02:50But if he's not motivated, then he could lose his title tonight
02:53Well, Hironaka appears to be a very shallow opponent
02:56He's the number one challenger
02:57He's had a great knockout record
02:59He's strong punch, strong puncher
03:01But many times we've seen Japanese fighters who haven't fought outside of Japan
03:06Come face an American fighter who look completely different
03:08Because they're seeing something completely different
03:10And in Rosario, when he's on
03:12He's one of the best fighters in the world
03:14When he is on, when he's off, you want to throw things at him
03:17Well, Rosario says that he doesn't know much about Hironaka
03:21He hates watching tapes
03:23He says it's a total waste of time
03:25He knows one thing about Hironaka
03:27The guy's tough, but big deal, everybody's tough
03:30I happen to agree with him
03:31I don't think fighters should watch tapes
03:33I think who should watch the tapes are great trainers
03:35Like Angelo Dundee, Gil Clancy, Georgie Benton
03:38Let them look at the tape, figure out what to do, and then instruct the fighter
03:41So often a fighter gets so confused looking at tape
03:44That when the real fight starts, they're looking at a completely different fighter
03:48I think the trainer should look at tape
03:49And the guys should do road work
03:51The boxers should do road work and go to the gym and work
03:54Well, Rosario did express concern to us
03:56Over Hironaka's penchant for coming straight in and headbutting
04:00He does have a tendency to headbutt
04:02And if you are a follower of Rosario
04:04You realize that he doesn't cut very easily
04:07Well, here he is in the ring
04:09Edwin Chapo Rosario
04:10Rosario, who is a world champion at the age of 20
04:12Only the second man ever to capture three lightweight titles
04:15Hoping to win as many, if not more, championships
04:18In the junior lightweight division
04:20And the big question, how will he respond in his first fight since winning the title?
04:24As we mentioned, he has had problems holding on
04:26Rosario 37-4 with 32 KOs
04:30And the challenger, the Japanese champ at 140 pounds
04:36Akinobu Hironaka, the WBA's top-rated contender
04:39He's 19-1, 17 knockouts
04:42His lone defeat, his first attempt at this title
04:45Falling to Juan Kogi in 1989
04:47His handlers told me, Hironaka is a Mexican-style fighter
04:51Which means, number one, he has come to the right place
04:54And number two, he likes to brawl
04:57Let's see how they match up on paper
05:00The tail of the tape
05:01Rosario, 29
05:03Hironaka, 28
05:04An inch-and-a-half height advantage for the challenger
05:06The weight almost even
05:08A three-inch reach advantage to Hironaka
05:10To the WBA rules
05:13Ten-point must system
05:14Three judges will score it
05:15No standing eight count
05:16Three knockdown rule is in effect
05:19Only the referee can stop the fight
05:21And a fighter cannot be saved by the bell
05:22Except in the final round
05:25So here at El Torrejo
05:28In the hub of Mexico City
05:29Closing in on the WBA Junior Welterweight Championship
05:32Head winner, Rosario
05:33Versus Akinobu Hironaka

09:35Here's Hiranaka getting set.
09:37We can assume the booing for Rosario because of the rival with Julio Cesar Chavez.
09:43He wants Chavez again, lost his second WBA lightweight title, Chavez at 87, a TKO by 11.
09:50Some labeled it the fight of the year.
09:51Many feel that Rosario did not fight up to potential that night.
09:54But he certainly was on target against Loretto Garza in his last fight in June, winning the
10:00WBA junior welterweight title with a third round knockout in Sacramento.
10:05So here we go.
10:06Edwin Rosario against Akinobu Hiranaka for the WBA junior welterweight championship schedule
10:12for 12.
10:13This crowd is behind the Japanese challenger.
10:17Hiranaka's come out, winging.
10:19Boy, what a fast start.
10:20Hiranaka's swarming, trying to smother Rosario.
10:25Now Rosario's patiently trying to get that uppercut in there.
10:29If he gets it in just right, it could be goodbye for Hiranaka.
10:34Hiranaka, a former straight fighter from Japan.
10:38His best weapon is a straight right, and Rosario is in trouble.
10:44Rosario holding on.
10:45Rosario is holding on.
10:47Unbelievable seconds into the fight.
10:50What a whirlwind has come out of Japan.
10:59And the fans behind Hiranaka.
11:04Again, Rosario throwing signs of getting hurt.
11:10Hard to explain.
11:13Again, Rosario holding on.
11:16Big trouble for Rosario.
11:18Rosario may be on his way down.
11:20Big trouble.
11:29Taking shots to the head with a minute 30 left in the first.
11:32The referee is leaving it off.
11:34It's all over.
11:36A stop that Rosario loses his title again.
11:39Unbelievable.
11:40It happens again.
11:42Rosario could get started before this typhoon win that came out of Japan.
11:48Blew him right out of the Coliseum.
11:51And we have a new WBA Junior 1008 champion.
11:55His name is Akinobu Hiranaka from Japan.
12:00Well, I said this was going to be the toughest fight of the night.
12:03I didn't know it was going to be the fastest fight of the night.
12:05What a whirlwind this kid is.
12:08Hiranaka came out here.
12:10Mexican fighter.
12:11I would say he's a Japanese fighter.
12:15Hiranaka being hoisted to the shoulders of his handlers.
12:20Totally humiliating the champion, Edwin Rosario, here in the first round.
12:25There are Hiranaka's supporters from Japan.
12:29And all thoughts of a future fight with Camacho go right out the window
12:34because you can't look past anybody in boxing.
12:37You've got to take care of business on the given night, and he didn't do it.
12:41Rosario, once again, amazingly enough, gives back a title.
12:45Rosario, who had a burning desire to meet Camacho, who is in attendance tonight,
12:50having lost a controversial decision to him at Madison Square Garden,
12:54in 1986, losing to this man, Okinobu Hiranaka.
13:09And he is being saluted by this crowd in Mexico City.
13:15The fans were behind Hiranaka from the very start.
13:22Let's take a look at how he gets in trouble.
13:26He's trying to land at Rosario.
13:28Oh, look at that shot.
13:29A good left hook gets Rosario in trouble.
13:32A right hand right on the button.
13:34And now it's lights up for Rosario because all he can do is hang on.
13:38Well, from this vantage point, you'll see the end of the fight.
13:46You'll see that the referee had nothing else to do but stop this fight.
13:49The punishment was incessant.
13:51And it was right on the button, the punches that were driving Rosario to the ropes.
13:58Look at that one.
13:59He was just up by the grace of God and he should have been stopped before he got hurt.
14:04I think it was stopped exceedingly well.
14:06I don't think there's any doubt Rosario could not have gone further.
14:09And there's the referee doing a wonderful job.
14:12And now we have a new champion.
14:14History repeats Ernesto Magana, Mexico City, waving it off.
14:21Rosario, who looks so splendid in his last fight over Loretto Garza for the title,
14:27cannot survive the first round against the challenger, Akinobu Hiranaka.
14:34Now 20 and one with 18 knockouts.
14:38Meanwhile, Rosario falling to 37 and five in his first offense of this junior welterweight championship.
14:48And there's the belt.
14:51Hiranaka, a proud warrior from Japan, born and raised in Okinawa, where he is a hero,
14:57now lives in Osaka, Japan.
15:04Hiranaka, who works for a golf course in Okinawa, is the champion.
15:09Let's go to Jimmy Lennon.
15:10Ladies and gentlemen, we have the time.
15:12One minute, 32 seconds in round number one.
15:16Vamos a caballero, tenemos el tiempo.
15:19Un minuto, 32 segundos.
15:22En el primer round, the referee in charge stops the contest.
15:26El referee terminó la pelea.
15:29The winner by way of technical knockout.
15:31The new champion, el nuevo campeón, Akinobu Hiranaka.
15:38Touchdown.
15:39Touchdown.
15:40Touchdown.
15:41Touchdown.
15:42Touchdown.
15:43Touchdown.
15:44Touchdown.
15:45Press.
15:46Touchdown.
15:47Touchdown.
15:48Touchdown.
15:49Touchdown.
15:50Touchdown.
15:51And coming up, it is our main event.
15:53Undefated Julio Cesar Chavez, 79 and 0 with 65 knockouts against number one rated and undefeated
16:05Hazel Hernandez for the WBC Super Lightweight Championship we are set
16:11once again for the fight doctor the ring with the new champion so let's go up to
16:15Ferdi ask him if he thought that he could get him knocked out so fast
16:20he didn't think so was it his plan to start fighting so hard at the very
16:32beginning it wasn't his plan to start fighting hard
16:37yeah he had a plan to attack when he was attacked did he get hurt at any time by
16:50Rosario's punches
16:52he did he did get hurt by the punches yes did he think that the fight was
17:04stopped correctly when it was did he think that Rosario didn't have any more
17:09chance yes he thinks it was correct because he's he says his punches were
17:23going right straight into his face
17:27ask him if he would like to fight Chavez after this fight
17:34he said no because he admired him so much of you don't want to fight with him
17:41and there's a new person a fighter that doesn't want to fight another one because he
17:46admires them so much what where are where are where do you think you don't want to fight
17:48He's a god for him. He admires him so much that he don't want to fight with him.
17:58And there's a new first. A fighter that doesn't want to fight another one because he admires him so much.
18:03Where do we go with this whirlwind?
18:05This is a real tough kid. I said he was a kamikaze warrior when he went in.
18:09This is indicative of putting on the best fighters with the best fights.
18:13Upset on Showtime. And now he's in the running.
18:15We'll be talking to him because I love him. I think he's going to do a terrific job.
18:19And a great job for Showtime.
18:21All right. Thank you very much, John King.
18:23A surprise. A surprise on the network of upsets. Another upset.
18:28Once again.
18:33Once again. And one last thing.
18:36Thank the Mexican fans for supporting him.
18:38He thanks very much the Mexican fans.
18:41And they're striking up the mariachis.
18:42So we go back to Steve, drowned out by the music of the mariachis.
18:47All right. Thank you very much, Bertie.
18:50We're going to take another look at the fight. It was so short.
18:52And the beginning of the fight. Edwin Rosario.
19:03Perhaps looking ahead.
19:05Beyond the Hironaka to Camacho or Chavez.
19:09And right off the bat from the opening bell.
19:13The fans in support of Hironaka.
19:16And Hironaka rising to the occasion.
19:18Putting off the upset.
19:20Applying the pressure to a stunned Rosario.
19:24He just ran up against a buzzsaw here.
19:26Hironaka just never let up. Relentless attack.
19:49Hironaka just came right over anything Rosario had.
19:52He couldn't get his game plan in.
19:54He couldn't get started boxing before he was overwhelmed.
19:57And I must say, Rosario is not showing any kind of chin.
20:01He may be toward the end of his road.
20:03Because his chin will used to be a lot tougher than that.
20:07What is it about this guy with this rollercoaster career?
20:10This up and down career.
20:11Here he is in the driver's seat.
20:13Maybe he should have looked at tapes of this guy.
20:15Well, his problem is that he's at the end of the road.
20:18He's taken some big beatings.
20:20One by Chavez.
20:21He's taken some, you know, some kind of shots where he is no longer the Rosario that he was.
20:26And this kid was strengthened.
20:28And he was nonstop action.
20:29And he was irresistible.
20:31And there it is.
20:32Just beyond the midway point.
20:34Round one.
20:36Unbelievable.
20:37Hironaka upsetting the world champion.
20:40And the crowd really eating it up.
20:48Hironaka very gracious at the end in thanking the Mexican fans for supporting him.
20:53And there you see them.
21:00That was earlier.
21:01We are back live at El Torrejo here in time.
21:04He knows one thing about Hironaka.
21:07The guy's tough.
21:08But Big Hill, everybody's tough.
21:09I happen to agree with him.
21:10I don't think fighters should watch tape.
21:12I think who should watch the tape are great trainers like Angelo Dundee, Gil Clancy, Georgie Benton.
21:17Let them look at the tape, figure out what to do, and then instruct the fighter.
21:21So often a fighter gets so confused looking at tape that when the real fight starts, they're looking at a completely different fighter.
21:27I think the trainer should look at tape.
21:29And the guy should do road work.
21:31The boxer should do road work and go to the gym and work.
21:33Well, Rosario did express concern to us over Hironaka's penchant for coming straight in and headbutting.
21:39He does have a tendency to headbutt.
21:40And if you are a follower of Rosario...
21:42And if you are a follower of Rosario...
