02:02Alright, thank you for tuning in
02:12Into Niagawani
02:13And today we're shining a spotlight
02:14On three outstanding Malaysian SMEs
02:16Recognized through the SME ESG Challenge
02:19An initiative by the UN Global Impact
02:21Global Compact Network Malaysia and Brunei
02:24The region's leading advocate
02:26For business sustainability
02:27And these three companies
02:29Are proving that you don't have
02:30To be paid but to make
02:31A big impact
02:32And let's welcome our three winners
02:33We start with
02:34Yang Mulia Raja Ahmad Fauzan
02:36Raja Hassan
02:37The Coffee Enthusiastic Officer
02:38And CEO of Belkov Asia Pacific
02:41And better known
02:42For their brand Coffee Star
02:44And in the middle
02:46We have Amelia
02:47The Compliance Manager
02:48At Signature Market
02:49Sunyan Berhad
02:49And on my right
02:50Is Christopher Growth
02:52And Sustainability Partner
02:53At Ani Smart Sunyan Berhad
02:55Thank you all for joining us
02:56And congratulations
02:57Thank you
02:58Thank you
02:58Alright, to open our discussion today
03:00We want to know more about your business
03:02The background of each of your business
03:04So perhaps we could start with Fauzan first
03:06Can you briefly introduce your company
03:07Like what you do
03:08And what makes Coffee Star unique
03:10In Malaysia's coffee space
03:12Thank you
03:13Thank you Nabila for inviting us
03:15And thank you also to SME Corp
03:17And also UNGC MYB
03:19For selecting three of us
03:21To showcase our ESG practices
03:23Coffee Star
03:25What we do is
03:26We democratising coffee drinking culture
03:29In Malaysia
03:29So we have two pillars of business
03:32Number one
03:33Business to business
03:34Whereby we put coffee machines
03:35In corporate offices
03:37Large corporations
03:38So they give the coffee
03:41As a part of their office environment
03:44Facilities
03:46Facilities
03:47Okay, that's one
03:49And also B2C
03:50Whereby we put our self-service coffee machine
03:53In public locations
03:54Like in the airport
03:55Hospitals
03:56In universities
03:58Government offices
03:59So this serving
04:01And as a convenient way
04:03To consume your coffee
04:0524 hours
04:06Currently we have about 150 machine
04:09Across the nation
04:10And as I said earlier
04:13Our focus is to providing
04:15A good cup of coffee
04:16Conveniently
04:17Affordably
04:18And not to forget that
04:20We really focus on
04:22Sustainability agenda
04:24Because for example
04:25Our coffee bin
04:26We source from
04:28Fairtrade certified coffee
04:29That's one
04:31Number two
04:31Last I checked
04:34In UNGC directory
04:36So far we are the only
04:38SME coffee company
04:39That's in their list anyway
04:40Amazing
04:41So that's a brief introduction
04:42About ourselves
04:43And we know that coffee
04:45Is a need right now
04:47Not just a must
04:48It's something
04:48The first thing we consume
04:49Even before water
04:50But Amelia
04:51For Signature Market
04:52Amelia, tell us
04:53What your brand represents
04:54That they have
04:55Also wellness
04:56Retail space
04:56And what actually
04:57Sets you apart
04:58In such a competitive market
05:00Right
05:00Thank you for that question
05:01Nabila
05:02Signature Market
05:03Is a D2C
05:04Direct to customer
05:06Channel
05:07Multi-channel
05:08We operate through
05:10Online and offline
05:11Channel
05:11Hence we have
05:12The retail spaces
05:13As well as
05:14Our e-commerce platform
05:16And Signature Market
05:17Is operating as
05:18A lifestyle brand
05:19That covers
05:20From our own
05:21Manufactured snacks
05:23Which is very well
05:24Known to the Malaysian market
05:26Which is all our almonds
05:27Cashew nuts
05:28Snacks
05:28That is loved
05:30By the Malaysian
05:31As well
05:31And the journey
05:33Of us starting
05:34This sustainability
05:35At Signature Market
05:36Is started
05:37From us
05:38Wanting to
05:40Upgrade the community
05:42Lifestyle
05:42Through their body
05:44Mind and spirit
05:45So as you can see
05:46From our list
05:47Of products portfolio
05:49You will notice
05:50That 500 products
05:52That we have
05:52Is centred around
05:54Upgrading our health
05:56And well-being
05:57In terms of our body
05:58Which is through
05:59The food products
06:00And the aromatherapeutic products
06:02And in terms of
06:04Mind and spirit
06:04We do offer
06:05Like community service
06:07That is running
06:08Every month
06:08Regardless
06:10You are our customers
06:11Or non-customers
06:13We offer it
06:14For as a complimentary
06:15For free
06:17And even there is
06:18A surcharge
06:20Of fees
06:21Around it
06:21It is all for
06:22The NGO speakers
06:24That we collaborated
06:25With
06:25So running
06:27The accessibility
06:28In Signature Market
06:29Is very much
06:30Run hand in hand
06:31With our vision
06:32Of upgrading
06:33The people lifestyle
06:34In Malaysia
06:35Amazing
06:36Running a business
06:36To help back
06:37And to give back
06:37To the society
06:38Correct
06:39And to Christopher
06:40For Arnie Smart
06:41What solutions
06:42Do you actually provide
06:43And who are the key
06:44Industries or clients
06:45That you serve
06:45Through your smart
06:46And sustainable
06:47Technologies
06:48Thank you
06:49Nabilah
06:50So di Angi Smart
06:51Kami yang fokus
06:52Untuk selesaikan masalah
06:54Priceport
06:56Terbesar
06:56Dalam bandar kita
06:58So yang kita panggil
07:00Ghost electricity
07:01Hantu electric
07:02Cuba bayangkan
07:04Peribu bangunan
07:05Di seluruh Malaysia
07:06Di mana lampu
07:08Di tempat letak kereta
07:09Dan tangga asid
07:10Menyala 24 jam
07:12Tanpa mati
07:13So yang ini
07:15Kita panggil dia
07:16Pembajaran senyap
07:18Silent waste
07:19So yang ini
07:20Yang berdarah
07:2130%
07:22Sehingga 30%
07:23Kos operasi
07:25Bangunan
07:26So kami berbeza
07:28Kerana kami
07:29Bukan yang
07:30Penjual lampu
07:31Restore the bleeding
07:33Kami tukar
07:34Pembajaran
07:35Ini tenaga
07:36Menjadi
07:37Kekayaan
07:38Untuk
07:39Pihak pengurusan
07:40Bangunan
07:41Dan penduduk
07:42Well generation
07:43Adalah
07:44Fokus kami
07:45So three different
07:47Businesses
07:48Three different
07:49Products
07:49And three different
07:50Services
07:51But still
07:52One same purpose
07:53So moving on
07:54Back to Fauzan
07:55We often hear that
07:56People say that
07:57ESG
07:57This environmental
07:58Social governance
07:59Is only for big corporations
08:00So to you
08:01Fauzan
08:01My question
08:02Why did you
08:03SNSME
08:04Decide that
08:05ESG
08:06Should be part of
08:07Coffee business
08:08Especially one dealing
08:09With sourcing
08:10Packaging
08:10And manufacturing
08:11And how did
08:12Platforms like
08:12ENGC
08:13MIB
08:13Actually help to
08:15Guide and support
08:15You along the way
08:17Okay in
08:18ESG
08:19Actually
08:20It's not just
08:21For a big corporation
08:22Yes they do
08:23Have more muscle
08:24But in our case
08:25SNSME
08:25Is
08:26We have
08:27More focus
08:28And more niche
08:29That we can go
08:30Because we can
08:30Contribute in term of
08:32Our primary
08:33Business focus
08:34So that's
08:35That's the main
08:36Advantage
08:38SSM is
08:39Because we're a bit
08:40Agile
08:40Compared to bigger
08:42Corporations
08:42They did
08:43After one
08:44Board meeting
08:45And another
08:45Board meeting
08:46To just get
08:46To come up
08:48With the agenda
08:48For our case
08:49When the owner
08:50In this case
08:51Ourself
08:52Or me
08:53As a driver
08:54From the company
08:55We said
08:55Yes
08:55We want to
08:57Sell a good cup
08:59Of coffee
08:59That's one
09:00And number two
09:01We also want to
09:02Make sure that
09:03Every cup
09:05Of coffee
09:06We serve
09:06Is not
09:07Contribute into
09:08Creating a
09:09Detrimental
09:10In fact
09:10To our
09:11Environment
09:11So with that
09:13We already
09:14Align
09:15As part of
09:16Our DNA
09:17For example
09:17When we
09:19Set up a company
09:20A couple of years
09:21Back
09:21We put
09:22As part of
09:23Our key
09:24Metrics
09:24Is
09:255%
09:26Of our
09:27Top line
09:28Revenue
09:29We will
09:30Contribute back
09:31To social
09:32Causes
09:32Bait
09:33In
09:33Nature
09:34Disaster
09:35Or
09:36Be it
09:36Like
09:37People
09:37Who
09:37Underserved
09:39Or
09:39Some
09:40Simple
09:41Things
09:41Like
09:41Blood
09:41Donation
09:42Drive
09:42So we
09:43Do
09:43That
09:43Something
09:44To invoke
09:45That
09:46Yes
09:47Good coffee
09:47But also
09:48We're doing
09:49Good
09:49For the
09:50Society
09:50At large
09:51Amazing
09:52Part of
09:53Corporate
09:53Social
09:53Responsibility
09:54As well
09:54But
09:55Amelia
09:55Many SMEs
09:56Actually
09:57Struggle
09:57With
09:57Where
09:58ESG
09:59Fits
09:59Into
09:59Their
10:00Businesses
10:00So why
10:01Did
10:01Senior
10:01Market
10:02Decide
10:02ESG
10:03Was
10:03Essential
10:04In
10:04Retail
10:05Food
10:05Safety
10:06And
10:06Responsible

10:07And how

10:18I
10:19Think
10:19We
10:19Are

10:21We
10:21Are

10:25Of
10:26Bigger
10:26Scale
10:27Or
10:27Smaller
10:27Scale
10:27Regardless
10:29We

10:32And
10:32Impact
10:33Towards
10:33Social
10:34And
10:34Environment
10:34So
10:35At

10:36Market
10:36How
10:36We

15:18all the beans we collected we making sure we receive back even the cotton or even the plastic
15:24we collect at our place and we either sell it or give to producers to do the next projects
15:32for example the plastic belt oh that's a good so that's our practice that's that's for the
15:37environment in the element of esg as well which is a social and governance for example our team
15:43this part of small company we making sure that our team member is well paid we don't we no longer
15:50talking about paying minimum wages all of our team member this part of the education and the role
15:57we're making sure they can sustain i mean if i put bluntly even more than two thousand ringgit now
16:02which is the minimum wages is what one thousand seven so that's the and and also the governance part
16:11there are a lot of compliance we have to do and we're very public about it we publish a report
16:18through unjc on the portal people can access what we've been doing in terms of we're not just
16:23talking we're doing what i've been talking that's a good practice and i really appreciate that what
16:29about you amelia within your supply chain or operations what esg initiatives that have brought
16:34real life value maybe through responsible sourcing waste reduction and improved customer trust oh yeah
16:40this is a very good question especially we are in the industry of food manufacturing food safety is
16:46our paramount and part of our governance of the esg we actually have launched initiatives other than the
16:57community service as well as the circular economy we are very much interested in also getting the
17:04certification from uh the kkm ministry of health as well as halal and also now we are even uh certified
17:13as a b corp hence uh the consumer trust is always top of our business and uh as a b corp we are also
17:23committed to a global movement as a company or as a business as a force for good this good is good for
17:32not only balancing the profit but also good for the people and the planet and in terms of our product
17:38offering because we are focused on the health and well-being of the community lifestyle the certification
17:47also extended to organic certificate so you will be able to purchase organic certified food products from
17:57our all our online and also the retail channels what about you christopher um across your operations
18:05which is asg initiatives actually made the biggest difference or value whether true better efficiency
18:10reduce waste happier customers okay our initiative sangat mudah adalah innovate business model kita
18:19and you triple zero promise kami sedar untuk tarik minat orang ramai kami kena buang rasa takut
18:27that cost cost cost yang tinggi so jadi kami tawarkan zero cost data model pendahuran
18:36okay okay zero risk tambah risiko kita yang tanggung risiko 100% zero worries data tambah tambah risal so
18:45kita jaminan petasi selama 10 tahun ini mewujudkan day one positive cash flow ia
18:52membuktikan bahawa being gold green ini bukan bermakna you rugi trade so ia bermakna kita cimak
19:03wang secara secara setemeter so yang selain ini kita juga bertanggungjawab lepas itu lampu sudah mati kita
19:15untuk untuk ambil balik sekitar semula so kita lampu punya lifespan ialah lima tahun so compare dengan
19:24market satu tahun kita adalah lima tahun so we can see that there's actually more pros and cons
19:32when you talk about esg but i want to understand understand further what's the esg's effect on brand
19:36strength fauzan um how has your commitment to sustainability strengthen coffee star brand and
19:42your relationships with partners retailers and customers at the same time okay um there are
19:48advantages because esg now is kind of really a buzzword and in fact for financing for example
19:54yeah they have like green financing to support company that doing esg practices in their business
20:02so to answer your question is there are a lot of advantages number one we are not just here
20:08yes i'm i'm all for you know vanity metrics like you know profit yes for profit right as a company yes
20:16for growth your company you need to grow bigger and yes also for revenue higher top line revenue but also
20:23it's not just zero sum gain whereby you make money but you give something back to environment you know you do
20:31something like you know a lot of wastages and also um very careless in in our production in in coffee
20:40star case we have we work with this four p principle number one is the products product once good no good
20:48products people won't buy and also people people which is our internal people team member and also the
20:54customer planet and also profit as a company we have to make profit we think these four principles
21:01as i said it's not a zero sum gain we can sell good products but also we can make sure that our
21:10products not really giving something bad to the society and also to the environment so four piece
21:18product planet profit and people what about you amelia how has your esg approach helped um on on
21:24sustainability strengthen the signature market brand uh that's first especially among consumers who care
21:30actually about transparency and also ethical practices that you practice in signature market
21:34that was a very great question namila i think as signature market we serve our community as our core
21:41part of our business because we believe that the community actually will communicate with us what they
21:47demand for like for example when we deliver them the products they would give us a feedback about how we could
21:56improve in our packaging material thereby it also reduces the pollution to the environment so we do listen
22:03to their feedback uh and in return uh to the first part of your question how it uh how esg actually elevates
22:10our brand i think it elevates enormously especially we are able to uh proudly be certified by b lab global
22:20as a b corp certification what it means to us being a b corp is uh we become a business that is becoming a
22:27force for good towards the people and the planet and this has been uh instilled as our dna of our
22:36organization that we no longer just functioning as an organization but functioning as a organism like
22:43something that is living and hence it's very much aligned to our company vision to upgrade the people
22:50lifestyle in the sense of uh in the sense of uh how to sustain their livelihoods on on this planet of
22:56we don't have a second planet and on your second part of question how do we actually uh gain the
23:02consumer trust on this is uh whenever they see us as a b corp um b corporation uh they understood that
23:10central market is stand standing for people standing for the planet so this would actually align with our
23:18communities uh demand as well uh when they purchase our products they understood that central market
23:24brand is the brand that could uh deliver products that is still uh fulfilling their health and well-being
23:31needs but at the same time we are actually reducing our pollution to the environment and with central
23:38market we could probably say that we actually that with that like uh more than 77 percent of waste away
23:45from landfill which is something uh our community is also uh very excited about and this is something
23:51that they demanded whenever they receive our parcels great christopher what about you how has your esg
23:57approached so far has helped uh a new smart stand up among competitors especially when dealing with
24:03clients who actually value responsible and sustainable partners okay okay you put me ubah jenama kami
24:09a new finance and identify closing from the center message from the country maybe between them
24:10and what a well- respecting customer partners okay in any new industry this is our goal-reek port of the pandemic
24:13in the industry this can contribute into trust and trust is everything
24:17well we think through this lesson very well, we want to do it by a netsk
24:24the event that we will align with scalene about the nămoshi World Development
24:30Ok
24:30okay if Ghar capturing, if Gharル Eijitar仏 has its cause she has been inf對對, then it may profit at all size
24:34the time in energy content, then we will have our Oui Marie
24:38reputasi kami, client tidak akan nampak kami sebagai penjua, tetapi sebagai
24:45sinking fund protector mereka. So kami bantu mereka jimat sehingga 450,000
24:54sepanjang tempoh kontrak dan kepercayaan itulah kelebihan daya saing terbesar kami.
25:02Okay, alright. So that's actually summed up the whole discussion on an interview of our
25:07session today. But I have one more question. This is to all other SMEs out there,
25:15Malaysian SMEs, what advice would you give to them who want to start their ESG's
25:19journey, environmental, social and governance journey that actually feel
25:24overwhelmed or unsure where to begin? So let's start with Fauzan first and then
25:28Amelia, then Christopher, please. Okay, you saved the best for last.
25:34Yeah. It's, I would say, not more on advice, it's more on our sharing of our
25:40journey. On publicly, there's a lot of information available. For example, I
25:45give you two examples. UNGC MYB have their own dashboard that people can go and
25:53access. They call it access. It's free and readily available. What need is just
25:58time for the team or for the business owner to go through and read. So that's one. And
26:04equally also, SME Corp have their own PMKS Lestery Guideline whereby you can do self-diagnosis.
26:14Self-diagnose what element that we have complied and what element we have to do in order to make
26:21sure that we are ESG compliance. So there's two guiding principles that are available in the
26:30market. In terms of people who want to take the journey of it, I would say ESG is a collaborative
26:38project. It's not just the producer, people like us who are selling it. A lot of elements
26:44require other stakeholders. For example, the government agencies at least should encourage
26:51or create some kind of new regulation that encourage for ESG. Take for example, we have
26:57done for even for plastic bottle or single-use plastic before. If government comes with good
27:04regulation, the things will follow. So there's the government agencies. And number two, other
27:11companies as well, we can work hand in hand together to go for the same agenda. And even
27:19the last is the consumer. Consumer also should aware that there are some advantages and also
27:26there are some cost element that we have to transfer back to consumer. Again, for example,
27:32like, you know, plastic. If you no longer use plastic, then you have to bring your own back.
27:38It's the same like even ESG company. There are some things that we have to transfer to
27:43them as a shared responsibility.
27:45What about you, Amelia?
27:46I think my advice is go for simple first. Start from small. You don't have to be great
27:52to start. And echoing to NJFALZAN tips from UNGC MYB's platform, which I mentioned earlier,
28:02about the academy platform. It's a very, very good start to start looking for sources related
28:08to ESG. Because from my understanding of practicing ESG myself, in this company, I realized that
28:15there's a lot of alphabet soup. There's a lot of acronyms. Like they came on mentioning
28:20about ESG. They came on mentioning about ISSB, SPTI, TCFD, a lot more. Even to the sense ISO
28:29have so many numbers to fulfill the requirements. I would say start simple by looking into platforms
28:39like UNGC MYB. And not to forget, SME Corp Malaysia have a very good PKS last study program. I'm
28:48very, very grateful that Social Market is part of this program that enables us to start our
28:55ESG so well. And another pro tip for myself as well. In order to start simple, we need
29:02to look at a simplified guide. And I have this pro tip for everyone over here, including our
29:08audiences, is to download the simplified guide from Capital Market Malaysia. It has a different
29:14sectorial guide of how to start a simplified ESG for their company. So I would highly encourage
29:21you guys to follow these three platforms to start simple and start small.
29:26Right. Christopher? Good sharing. I just need to add on one more point. So nasihat saya
29:33Silakan. Kepada rakan-rakan SME, so sangat mudah. Sustainability should pay for itself. Jangan angkat ESG
30:07positive sejak hari pertama tanpa beban kewangan. So di mana kebocoran dalam
30:14industri itu cari jalan untuk selesaikannya. So di situ nilai sebenar bermula.
30:22So great. From the sharing of yours, from all the three of you can actually show that SMEs
30:29can lead with purpose and that sustainability isn't actually a burden but a business advantage.
30:35So again, thank you so much. I would like to say thank you so much to Fauzan, to Emilia and to Christopher.
30:39And again, once more congratulations to all these three winners of the SME ESG challenge by
30:46UNGCMYB. And you can find this whole discussion on all of our social media platforms and that
30:52includes astroawani.com. And see you next time.
