00:00the pretty boys look at me everybody how pretty i am i like the tough guy tight ends i didn't have
00:05to fight that son of a gun you play football tight we had to watch him for 60 minutes because he'd
00:10take your head off this is as good a list as you're gonna get number nine how is that possibly
00:16right that has to be better than seven he's got the best number four right he's at number two
00:24has to be the number one laughable there is no question number one best ever
00:30top it ends all right getting specific now i like tight ends that are complete well we're giving
00:39you the complete list of the top 10 tight ends it's a whole new breed of tight ends now they're big
00:45they're fast they got good hands he doesn't block he doesn't want to block gates lining up as a wide
00:51receiver if you can catch the ball you can't block that's okay tight ends should be asked to block
00:57more and block better this list really couldn't be better as we count down 10 of the greatest
01:03talents to ever play the position toughness plain old toughness let the debate begin as we bring you
01:10our top 10 tight ends is mickey shuler on the list what they keep showing mark bavaro he's not on the list
01:17number 10 tight end of all time antonio gates
01:21pretty good number 10
01:24antonio gates is
01:26antonio gates has been money on the bank since he entered the nfl in 2003
01:33he's a freak of nature he's a great athlete pushes off and makes the catch
01:38he's absolutely huge
01:43is there anybody on this planet that could cover antonio gates tremendous talent and athletic ability
01:52touchdown san diego amazing an amazing athlete what a play by 85 my goodness how do you
02:00you cannot cover gates with a linebacker
02:05when you find one like that they really do a lot for a football team you can replace ladenian
02:14tomlinson you cannot replace a guy who requires two people to cover him at all times and that is
02:20antonio gates that's what happens when you get so focused on ladenian tomlinson and you take your
02:26attention away from a guy like antonio gates what you see with the way teams try to defend antonio gates
02:31tells you everything you need to know about how they respect him
02:34good care dude good care
02:38coming out of college football wasn't the sport gates was known for
02:46not bad for a guy that wasn't drafted huh basketball player at kent state
02:50oh the big hoopster from kent state climbing hard for the rebound
02:54the thing i took from the basketball court was just my hand-eye coordination
02:57and like catching the ball was just always natural
03:01because of his basketball background
03:03explosive first step
03:05antonio gates was the guy who changed it and made people start going out there
03:09and drafting guys from small schools who were good at basketball
03:13gates changed the way that we look at tight ends
03:15antonio gates was a game-changing talent but is he worthy of being called the 10th best tight end of all time
03:23wow that's close i'd have to go down and crunch some numbers
03:29gates was a touchdown machine uh he was a guy who was going to give you eight nine hundred yards maybe a thousand yards
03:34and again the tight end gates for a long time was the best tight end in football and there wasn't a question
03:40it's a big second quarter for gates antonio gates definitely deserves to be in the top ten
03:46i think antonio gates should certainly be in the top ten
03:50gates is in there yet again unbelievable that a guy did not play college football and be a hall of fame tight end in the nfl
03:57it blows my mind
04:03blocking ability
04:05oh
04:07well this guy he can block some
04:09he doesn't block he doesn't want to block
04:11he doesn't finish plays he's out for himself at times
04:15but boy what a great athlete he is he makes plays
04:17it's not that he was exceptionally fast
04:19it's not that he had the greatest hands in the history of the position but he could just get open
04:24and that's what philip rivers loved about him that's what defenses hated about him
04:27the game has got it right to tackle touchdown
04:30if you can remember how dominant he was
04:33you know in the mid-2000s the guy was unstoppable you could not stop him in the red zone
04:37he's probably too low
04:39i'm going to see the rest of the guys but he's probably too low i think he's the height of a tight end
04:43to be first team all pro three years in a row
04:47with tony gonzalez in your division
04:51and they're saying you're the best
04:54in the league
04:56is impressive
04:57no team has featured more great tight ends than the raiders
05:01the raiders had a lot of good tight ends
05:03they can make your offense run
05:05guys like raymond chester
05:07come back over the middle he's got chester
05:09todd christensen
05:10christensen
05:11touchdown layton
05:13christensen and raymond chester each compiled over 5,000 yards and 40 touchdowns
05:19but the only tight end in silver and black to crack our top 10
05:23was first an all-american tackle at notre dame
05:26the ghost
05:27the number nine tight end of all time
05:30dave casper
05:32i have no idea how
05:35casper would get the nickname of ghost
05:37a great effort by the ghost
05:39dave casper
05:41it's like a guy with big forearms getting the nickname of popeye
05:45i mean who would think of that
05:47into the end zone
05:48in an era when
05:51tight ends were supposed to be an afterthought
05:53suddenly dave casper was
05:56a weapon
05:57a clutch tight end
05:58in particular a game against valdemore
06:00ghost to the post
06:01i just like saying ghost to the post
06:04deep to casper
06:05casper makes it over the shoulder
06:07catch
06:07the guy was remarkable
06:08a very remarkable adjustment as casper has managed to run under
06:14that high line
06:15it was always there when ken stabler needed him most
06:19our number nine
06:23cases were the raiders and oilers racking up over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns
06:29yeah
06:30and adonis who defines what tight end play is all about
06:34best tight end to ever play a game
06:36think about it
06:39you got a tight end
06:40250
06:41his arms are like an extra foot long
06:43his hands are huge
06:44and his mother must have been a gorilla
06:46brilliant like a life by the master of his position
06:49look at our super bowl
06:50he ran over paul kraus like a pickup over a rooster
06:54he didn't catch anything
06:57he didn't care about getting hit
06:59casper makes the catch
07:00he yelled ghost to the post
07:03david was a great blocker
07:07you know he could block two or three guys at once
07:09he had a tight end who could block and be a tough run blocker in the trenches
07:14i always got into the guy i very seldom made a mistake
07:17that's what i took most pride in
07:18to me if i had a great day receiving and a poor day blocking it was bad
07:22crazy ghost
07:23david was told don't sit on your helmet and practice
07:27because you wouldn't eat with a helmet on at lunch or dinner
07:30that evening dave came to dinner and proceeded to eat his dinner
07:35threw his face mask with a helmet and spooned it for it
07:38if you're going to be a great football player you're going to be a little weird
07:41great and weird
07:43sum up dave casper and his most famous play
07:46the holy roller game against san diego
07:49action peaked with only 10 seconds to play
07:52the ball got fumbled it got bobbled it got chipped
08:02when play ended dave casper had the winning touchdown
08:09you know i was just there
08:11hitters roll the fumble casper has recovered in the end zone
08:14and if you look it was just pure luck
08:16he kind of jumbled it into the end zone
08:21i played 11 years and i had some success and what do i remember before being a fumbling
08:31fool at the end of a holy roller whatever you want to call it
08:34this one will be relived forever
08:37the number eight tight end of all time
08:40rob gronkowski
08:42he's already the number one
08:44eight
08:44this comes out today eight for gronk wait he said eight number eight that's low
08:49you cannot stop him double cover doesn't matter
08:53gronk is already a top three tight end in nfl history just because of his production in the red zone
09:00there's not a fair fight no
09:01just production wise over a short period of time nobody else has even come close
09:08this is a guy who's ruthie in his production
09:11if any team wants a tight end and they could fill out a form and order one
09:20they're not ordering mike ditka
09:22they're not ordering john mackie
09:24they're ordering a rob gronkowski
09:2632 teams out of 32 teams are ordering a rob gronkowski
09:30one of those every once in a generation tight ends
09:34cronk is eight
09:39cronk is eight because he is great
09:42the terminator you can only keep him down for so long
09:46he's a mismatch problem
09:48put a linebacker and run him out on him
09:50can't cover him
09:51a linebacker on a six foot six tight end will take it
09:55too big for the defensive backs
09:58he's going to out muscle you for the football
10:00people don't realize how fast he is
10:02catches everything that's thrown at him
10:07when do you see gronk dropping the ball
10:08never
10:09and he has fun
10:11he dominates the red zone
10:16and then the club that night
10:18what i hate about gronkowski is
10:21he's very good
10:23he is on the pats
10:24but when i look at him
10:27i secretly want to be him
10:29and i hate that about myself
10:30look at that run back gronk
10:32damn
10:34i'm being a groupie
10:36just like the way he spikes the ball after a touchdown
10:40is that not the perfect thing for a guy named gronk
10:43it's even almost like onomatopoetic
10:45like when he slams it
10:46it sounds like it would make the sound effect gronk
10:48if you have a sold out party cruise you immediately bump up three spots in the top ten list
10:54his brothers have commercials
10:56man
10:57what do you think you're doing
10:58i'm dan gronkowski
11:00and i choose visa checkout
11:01my story began
11:03turn out the lights
11:04when your brothers get commercials because they're your brother
11:07you've made it
11:08huh
11:09our number eight tight end is a true double threat
11:15rock does things that nobody has ever done on an nfl field
11:19on top of being the most unguardable receiver in the nfl
11:23that was unbelievable
11:24how long did you catch that
11:26he's a great blocker too
11:27i'm convinced if rob gronkowski was just an offensive tackle
11:30he would bring value to the patriots
11:32that's how good of a blocker he is
11:33he just fell after the touchdown signal was called
11:38yes he was just yapping to me the whole time
11:40and uh that's why i took him and threw him out of the club
11:42gronkowski is rewriting the tight end record books
11:48at a faster rate than we've ever seen
11:50so rob gronkowski right now after six seasons
11:53has more touchdowns than any tight end in the hall of fame
11:55i don't even know how i did that
11:57disgusting
11:59so why is gronk so low on our list
12:01the only way that you could put gronk
12:04not as the number one or two tight end of all time
12:07is that he hasn't played his whole career yet
12:10but that explanation doesn't please everyone
12:13i think it is obscene
12:15that he is a number eight
12:17he should be number one
12:19and the next closest guy should be number three
12:22and you have a tight end and a weapon
12:25like gronkowski
12:26so big
12:27one of those every once in a generation tight ends
12:30of all the shows we've ever done together
12:32this is the most outrageous egregious thing
12:34rob gronkowski is already the greatest tight end of all time
12:37he's already i don't care if he never plays another game
12:39he is the single greatest tight end i have ever seen
12:42to ever play the game
12:45and you have him at number eight
12:46since its inception in 1967
12:50the nfc east has been known for its tight ends
12:54well if we're talking top ten tight ends of all time
13:07we've got to talk mark bavaro
13:10he was a dominant player
13:14he deserves to my mind to be in the top three of all time tight ends
13:18i didn't cover the giants
13:19but i've heard enough from bill belichick
13:21about mark bavaro being the ultimate tight end
13:23that the fact that he's not in the top ten
13:25would absolutely drive him bananas
13:28dang
13:29he's bragging
13:31he's not on the top ten list
13:32you brought me in here to do this interview
13:34and you didn't put bavaro on the top ten
13:36this is
13:37this interview's over
13:38this interview's over
13:39can't use any of this clip
13:40i'm out of here
13:41no
13:42bavaro
13:43the number seven tight end of all time
13:47jason witten
13:48someone you might not want to talk nice about
13:52but is on our list
13:54jason witten
13:54why because i'm from philadelphia
13:57you're going to think i don't like jason witten
13:59because i'm from philadelphia
14:00unfortunately he's too good
14:03he is too good
14:05jason witten's probably a guy that can play in both ears
14:08he's athletic for this era
14:11but he's big and strong for another area
14:13banging through the traffic
14:15like a runaway truck
14:18jason witten is just the man
14:22and then jason witten went all jason witten
14:26i love jason witten
14:28receiver
14:28touchdown jason witten
14:30blocker
14:31just such an underrated quiet guy that no one talks about
14:34but absolutely one of the best tight ends of all time
14:37hall of famer in my book
14:38jason witten is definitely one of the top ten tight ends of all time
14:43because this is a guy that the numbers are off the charts
14:47but the other thing that jason witten did was he blocked
14:58i mean the cowboys had some good running teams
15:01jason witten gets a great seal block
15:03and witten was
15:04witten
15:05block as a tight end is almost unfair
15:09because they got
15:09zach martin and uh tyron smith or something like that
15:14on that o-line
15:15they already have a great o-line
15:18and do you have a tight end that can block
15:20unfair
15:20was involved in the blocking
15:24witten's doing a tremendous blocking job tonight
15:27he can catch
15:28he can block
15:29a lot of people probably don't appreciate
15:32his completeness as a tight end
15:34not everyone agreed with jason witten's ranking as the seventh best tight end of all time
15:44jason witten at number seven
15:46all time
15:47jason witten is the number seven tight end all time
15:52that's crazy
15:53there's got to be other tight ends that had bigger moments and bigger gains than jason witten
15:59you don't think of jason witten as being a game breaker like gronkowski
16:04or dave casper
16:06or antonio gates
16:08to me when you're talking about some of the guys
16:12you guys have a rank behind him
16:14they were much more frightening to game plan for than jason witten
16:19while his selection wasn't unanimous
16:26it was too impressive to leave off our lists
16:29ranking second all time among tight ends in both receiving yards and receptions
16:35he doesn't get a lot of the accolades as a rob gronkowski or a jimmy graham
16:40but year in and year out witten's putting up good numbers he's a hall of fame
16:45you think he's a great player don't you you don't even know how great this guy is
16:49witten that guy is a beast
16:52witten is one of those guys since he's on the cowboys that the way i know he's good
17:05is that i've said the f word before his name countless times while watching it
17:10you know a player on your opposing team is good when you're like
17:14witten man
17:15the number six tight end of all time
17:19ozzy newson
17:21too wide
17:23who's ahead of him
17:24he was outstanding i don't know if there was a better tight end
17:28idiot
17:29and one of the great tight ends who ever played the game
17:33ozzy newson with a touchdown grab
17:35since number 82 ozzy newson graduated from alabama he has made catches like this
17:44remember calling bear brian the day of the draft he's odd as the greatest receiver i've ever seen
17:49and that includes don hudson and many others that i played with and against
17:52the alabama wide out played 13 seasons in cleveland and retired as the nfl's all-time leader in receptions and yards by a tight end
18:01ozzy newson with a marvelous catch
18:04ozzy was one of the first guys i ever saw a tight end who was primarily a pass catcher
18:10hands
18:11his trademark
18:12the spectacular catch
18:14the way he ran the way he got open there really wasn't too much you couldn't do
18:19ozzy newson oz his remarkable catches i think people just put that all together
18:31newson with a marvelous catch
18:33it was pretty magical being able to lock in on making the catch
18:37they all look the same it's ozzy newson stretched out like this
18:42ozzy touchdown rounds
18:44as a fan you just stood there going holy mackerel
18:47tremendous hands and i think tremendous heart
18:52he's a beloved guy now but i mean i think he was a beloved guy his entire time
19:02look at ozzy newson soaked in mud but he was not going to be denied
19:06here's what i want you to think of from a slot
19:08get the ball to ozzy on the flag
19:10touchdown newson
19:11our number six tight end was not the wizard of blocking
19:15more of a receiving threat than he was a blocking threat
19:18he was a tight end who was much better as a receiver than a blocker
19:23come on you stay after him oz you're gonna have to block him
19:26didn't want to
19:27didn't try to
19:29i'm a receiver
19:30give me the ball
19:32the wizard's credo is this ball is mine
19:35god bless him
19:37didn't block but you know what
19:39deon sanders haven't tackled anybody yet either
19:41despite 662 catches in cleveland
19:46ozzy newson didn't win a super bowl
19:48until he was a general manager in baltimore
19:51i'm biased a little bit by my affection for ozzy
20:06but if you don't have ozzy newson in your top 10 list it's not a valid list
20:10and now the number five tight end of all time
20:16shannon shan sharp
20:17i've always admired ozzy
20:20i can't think of a better place to come
20:22because i can see the guy every single day
20:24and he can see me every single day as i break his record
20:27there it is shannon sharp breaks the record
20:30ozzy newson gets him a big hug
20:33the new nfl career record holder for receptions by tight end line
20:36i think shannon sharp may be a little too low on this list
20:39he was the first tight end to play like a wide receiver statistically
20:44mercy mercy is anybody gonna cover him
20:47emotionally a guy with what three super bowl rings
20:51you talk about three super bowl rings
20:55no losses in the super bowl also
20:58and you talk about right now he'd be at fifth
21:03but he was a little low in 2016
21:05there's a short list of guys who were as good as shannon sharp
21:11at the tight end position
21:13where do y'all get a load of meat
21:16shannon sharp played 14 seasons with the broncos and ravens
21:21and broke newson's all-time tight end records for receptions in yards
21:24sharp a 32-yard pickup
21:27while winning three super bowls
21:29this guy was a numbers beast and he put up huge stats
21:34he put up the numbers he had the rings that's legit
21:40and he scores
21:41when you play one-on-one with a linebacker safety shannon was gonna win
21:44if you run zone defense shannon was so good at sitting it down
21:50for shannon sharp what a huge day
21:52well
21:53you know what you call a great blocker
21:56todd christensen told me if you want to be famous
21:59and you want to make a lot of money forget about blocking catch passes
22:02that day in time the h-back was coming in to play in the national football league
22:09kind of like the extra tight end
22:11we're gonna have to be a great blocker but it could be a receiver
22:14the word in turn h-back was like hearing about a triple grand soy latte
22:21triple grand soy latte is and you know what an h-back is shannon sharp defined that position
22:27in terms of beast of a blocker and a beast of a catcher
22:33sharp touchdown
22:35he's definitely a beast in terms of his mouth
22:37but i know what you mean shannon sharp was fun because he's always been good at
22:42talking he may be the number five tight end but he's the number one trash talker of all time
22:47in my opinion that guy could run his mouth like nobody else
22:49b-r-o-n-z-o-n
22:51bruncle bruncle bruncle bruncle bruncle
22:53ride baby ride baby ride
22:55boy i know not if i'm a little short ugly mode
22:58a quote machine
22:59if you leave now you get a hand-totled track
23:02everybody remembers where he picked up the red phone in foxborough
23:06i've called the president
23:07president we need the national guard
23:09we need as many men as you can spare
23:11because we are killing the patriot
23:13let these horses out the gate
23:14we had them in the post all day let these horses out
23:16they said it wasn't our teammate i would hate him
23:20hey it's gonna be one of them days
23:24don't upset the man that i have to block
23:26but a guy that i i have to run through
23:29don't piss him off
23:30but he could back it up
23:35sharp walk the walk for the 2000 ravens
23:38making a big play in each playoff game
23:41if we could get one touchdown up on you
23:44you weren't gonna win the game
23:45and it was very typically shannon sharp
23:47that gave us that seven point lead
23:49the ball gets tipped up in the air
23:52who catches it
23:53caught by shannon sharp out of deflection
23:55sharp up the far sideline
23:57in the black hole
23:58he has that one long run
24:01against the ravens
24:03shannon sharp
24:05touchdown
24:06that was the only touchdown of the game
24:09super bowl game our first touchdown
24:10throwing deep down the middle for stokely's got it
24:13you can see the respect that shannon sharp has
24:16not only did they jam at the line of scrimmage
24:18but they had a safety over the top and the back side safety left brandon stokely on on one
24:23by overreacting to shannon sharp's presence on the other side
24:26yeah
24:27and the ravens are the champions of the world
24:30he's exactly where he should be because when you look at his peers
24:33during the time that he played
24:35he certainly was in the top one or two
24:37he has artificial hips where he doesn't even need a cane
24:46he's larger than life
24:47mike ditka
24:49obviously we all know him as duck coach
24:51and rightfully so
24:53see that that's your iq buddy zero
24:55but i think a lot of people
24:57he's a much better player than he was a coach
24:59forget that he was at
25:00hud tight end in the league
25:04if you watch old highlights of ditka
25:07it's awesome
25:08he's just this like
25:09beast of a man
25:11he was essentially
25:13gronk before gronk
25:15he looks like an axe murderer
25:16have you seen a picture of the man when he was a player
25:18he has a crew cut
25:20guys stay aware of crew cut
25:22that's how tough he was
25:23he won a super goal as a coach
25:26but even more accolades as a player
25:28mike ditka was a better
25:30he also won a super bowl as a player
25:32first 1,000 yard tight end
25:35in nfl history
25:36in 1961
25:39a 14 game season
25:43and he was a rookie
25:45player than he was a coach
25:49history may remember mike ditka
25:51as being a super bowl winning coach
25:53but one that really left a few titles on the table
25:56he was consistently good
25:57as a tight end
25:58and his numbers speak for themselves
26:00and he's in the hall of fame as a tight end
26:01attitude
26:02determination
26:03and certainly physical talent
26:05he never quit
26:06his 12 year career
26:08took him from the bears
26:09to the eagles
26:10to the cowboys
26:11ditka's last catch
26:14in football
26:15was the touchdown
26:16in the super bowl against me
26:17when i got back to the sideline
26:19shula's just screaming at me
26:20dick
26:21dick
26:22dick
26:22i beat you
26:22huh
26:24when iron mike played
26:26he was mean and nasty
26:28in a mean and nasty era
26:30if they would come after his knees
26:33he would go after their knees
26:35if they hit him in the head
26:37he hit them in the head
26:38iron mike
26:39i don't know if there's anybody ever tougher than him
26:41toughness
26:42plain old toughness
26:43hard to bring down
26:45bouncing off tacklers
26:47mike ditka's hard-nosed approach
26:49earned him the number four spot
26:51on our list
26:52kick the other team's ass
26:55that's what it was
26:57there is a personality
27:01that fits the chicago bears
27:02strength rather than finesse
27:05mike fits the bill perfectly
27:07i just think the bears
27:08going back to the days i played
27:10they stood for something
27:11it was a toughness
27:12iron moss blue collar
27:15just like chicago
27:17take your lunch bucket to work
27:19put in eight hours to come home
27:20they stood for what this city stands for
27:22a toughness
27:23i played the game for a long time
27:25when it came time to play
27:26nobody played any harder than i did
27:28he hits mike ditka for eight yards
27:31ditka puts chicago in scoring position
27:34five guys
27:35and he was disciplined
27:36he was hard-nosed
27:37took five guys to hit him
27:39and he didn't even get him down on the ground
27:41until he was out of bounds
27:43then you had to watch him for 60 minutes
27:45because he'd take your hit off
27:46intimidating
27:47they were terrified of him
27:49i'm insane you know
27:50they knew that
27:51and he was a phenomenal blocker
27:55mike ditka
27:56if you watch film
27:57when gail sayers is running
27:59with the ball
28:00ditka's still
28:01running downfield with him
28:03we initially ate
28:05some moving magic
28:06before mike ditka's
28:0710 paving block
28:08with the fire
28:11article obliterated
28:13sayers strides out to a touchdown
28:15he blocked a man
28:16i like that in him
28:18because i knew that
28:19i can depend on mike
28:20in the ultimate tight end
28:24when you wanted a blocker
28:25and a catcher
28:26who would strike some fear
28:28in the defense
28:29there's never been anybody
28:30like mike ditka
28:31he put up some numbers
28:33that no tight end
28:35had even approached
28:36to that point
28:37in his first season
28:38he had over a thousand yards receiving
28:41which was unheard of
28:42for a tight end
28:44at that time
28:44billy wave
28:45finds his great rookie
28:46mike ditka open
28:47and mike completes
28:48a 36 yard
28:49td strike
28:50his rookie season
28:51is probably the greatest
28:52rookie tight end season
28:53in nfl history
28:54he was born to be a bear
28:55in fact
28:56when you look at him
28:57real close
28:58he looks like a bear
29:00look at the eyes
29:01i don't think you'd want
29:02to look face to face
29:03with that guy
29:04out in the wilderness
29:05those who watch ditka play
29:07have a hard time
29:07believing we ranked him
29:08as only the fourth best
29:10you agree with that
29:11absolutely not
29:12ditka invented the position
29:13i'd have ditka won
29:15frankly
29:16we were too scared
29:17to ask ditka
29:18what he thought
29:18of the ranking
29:19and you still don't
29:23ditka's 86
29:27he's gonna stop 85 today
29:28baby we're gonna stop 85
29:29the modern tight end
29:32has seen his role
29:33expand
29:34touchdown 49ers
29:36that might have been
29:36the greatest catch
29:37I've ever made
29:38going over the middle
29:40of the end zone
29:40and it's
29:41caught
29:41short lead
29:42on the list
29:44of 75 catch seasons
29:45by a tight end
29:46more than half
29:47have happened
29:48since 2000
29:49that was
29:50caught
29:51touchdown
29:51open
29:52got it
29:52touchdown
29:53wow
29:54Kellen Winslow Jr.
29:57has 475
29:58catch seasons
29:59one more than
30:00dear old dad
30:01he's also in jail
30:03for sexual crimes
30:04now
30:04so let's talk
30:06about senior
30:06touchdown
30:07Tampa Bay
30:08what a great
30:09and crack our list
30:10while Papa
30:11comes in at number 3
30:12Kellen Winslow Sr.
30:13Kellen Winslow Sr.
30:14Kellen Winslow is the best tight end to ever play that position
30:28Kellen Winslow is the best tight end ever
30:31the best ever
30:32not according to our list
30:34but he's number 3
30:35for redefining the position
30:37Kellen Winslow
30:38the early
30:40prototype
30:41of what a tight end could be
30:43we had never seen anything like it
30:47we had never seen a team
30:48where the tight end
30:49was getting a thousand yards
30:50Kellen Winslow
30:51was the first guy
30:53to blend the lines
30:54between wide receiver
30:55and tight end
30:56who really kind of changed
30:58the shape and position
30:59was the tight end of the future
31:01back in the 1970s
31:02he was the first real athlete
31:04but 6'5
31:05he's an inviting
31:05and talented target
31:06teams started looking at
31:08big
31:09fast
31:09tight ends
31:10that could be the number
31:11he may have been the Chargers
31:14number 1 receiver
31:15but there's a reason why
31:17he's number 3
31:17on our countdown
31:18people will say
31:20that he wasn't
31:20a blocker
31:22however
31:23Winslow found other ways
31:25than blocking
31:26to prove his toughness
31:27boom
31:28never forget
31:29the Miami game
31:30running to the right side
31:32look
31:32throw downfield
31:33caught by Winslow
31:34Winslow was just unbelievable
31:36we couldn't stop him
31:37up to Winslow
31:39Winslow
31:39down to the 1 yard line
31:40he called Kellen Winslow soft
31:42at least they didn't
31:43call him soft twice
31:44in the epic in Miami
31:46Winslow caught 13 passes
31:48for over 160 yards
31:50over the middle
31:51he's got his win man
31:52Winslow touchdown
31:52the effort left him
31:54drained
31:55and dehydrated
31:56he was so tired
31:57that his teammates
31:58had to help him up
31:59but he still blocked
32:00the field goal
32:01to send the game
32:02to overtime
32:02that may have been
32:05one of the greatest
32:05single performances
32:07by player
32:08in NFL history
32:10melodramatic
32:11never once
32:13did anybody ever
32:14help me off the field
32:15I got my butt
32:17off the field
32:18under my own power
32:19with a broken back
32:20broken ankles
32:21you name it
32:22I've had it all
32:22but you get off the field
32:24hey
32:26you lost that game
32:29to the guy
32:30you're trying
32:31to call soft
32:33and I like
32:33Kuchenberg
32:34your team lost
32:37to the guy
32:39you're trying
32:39to call soft
32:40that's all
32:41you have to say
32:41be a man
32:44he's definitely
32:46one of the best
32:47tight ends
32:47I've ever seen
32:47in my lifetime
32:48I think you have
32:49to list him
32:50in my opinion
32:51he's very Tom
32:52tight ends
32:54like the 49ers
32:55Brett Jones
32:55played a big role
32:56in leading their teams
32:57to Super Bowls
32:58Jay Novacek
32:59did the same
33:00for the Cowboys
33:01going for the end zone
33:03Novacek
33:04at the 2
33:05takes it in
33:05touchdown
33:06and out
33:0712 bowler
33:08to 12 bowler
33:09the Patriots
33:11Ben Coates
33:11isn't shy
33:12about who
33:12he thinks
33:13should make the list
33:14not being able
33:15to nominate yourself
33:16who are the
33:17some of the tight ends
33:18do you think
33:18of the best
33:19to play this
33:19kind of play
33:19this game
33:20why I can't
33:20nominate myself
33:21Coates led his team
33:24to a Super Bowl
33:25he was also
33:28on the 2000 Ravens
33:29the Lions
33:32Charlie Sanders
33:33dizzying array
33:34of aerial artistry
33:35never helped
33:36reach the big game
33:38touchdown
33:40what an over the shoulder
33:42kill
33:42for the top
33:43touchdown
33:43Sanders is the only
33:45Hall of Fame
33:46tight end
33:46who failed
33:47to make our list
33:48we've got a number
33:50two tight end
33:51of all time
33:52John Mackey
33:53yes
33:54John Mackey
33:57wouldn't be that high
33:57John Mackey
33:58is the greatest
33:58they ever lived
33:59they all try
34:00to emulate him
34:00if you're unlucky
34:01enough not to live
34:02in Baltimore
34:03then these
34:04spectacular films
34:05will introduce you
34:06to excitement
34:07unlimited
34:07that may sound
34:10like hyperbole
34:11but people get
34:12pretty hyped
34:13talking about
34:13our number
34:14two tight end
34:15it's amazing
34:16he is
34:18unbelievable
34:19first effort
34:20second effort
34:21third effort
34:21he's taking his team
34:23put it right
34:23on his shoulders
34:24this Hall of Famer
34:26is perhaps
34:26the most punishing
34:27runner
34:28after the catch
34:29of all time
34:30that helped
34:31change his position
34:32forever
34:32I think
34:33that John Mackey
34:34I mean
34:35he defined it
34:36actually
34:36he could catch
34:37the pass
34:37and take it
34:38all away
34:3880 yards
34:3990 yards
34:40I mean
34:40he could do
34:41that
34:41pretty fast
34:42for a guy
34:42that weighed
34:43about 230 pounds
34:44Mackey could run
34:45like 4 or 5
34:46Mackey was to me
34:47the first guy
34:48who became
34:48a seam ripper
34:49Mackey was
34:50who could rip
34:52a defense
34:53in half
34:53show the Super Bowl
34:57touchdown
34:58few athletes
34:59have truly
34:59revolutionized
35:00their positions
35:01brilliant
35:02absolutely
35:02fantastic
35:03tight end
35:05Mackey
35:05after he got
35:06his hands
35:06on the football
35:07he was
35:08tough to bring
35:09down
35:09his greatness
35:10was his ability
35:10to run
35:11after the catch
35:12he ran like
35:13a fullback
35:13he had the ability
35:15to make guys
35:15bounce off of him
35:16he's universally
35:18acknowledged
35:18as one of the
35:19toughest players
35:20to tackle
35:21Sean Mackey
35:22was a monster
35:23he was a very
35:24talented guy
35:24we couldn't get him
35:25on the ground
35:26Mackey was one
35:27of those guys
35:27as soon as the ball
35:28found its way
35:29into his hands
35:30he became bigger
35:31faster
35:32stronger
35:33and harder
35:34to bring down
35:35he was just a horse
35:35out of control
35:36once he caught the ball
35:37you couldn't tackle him
35:38I never ever went
35:39into a game
35:40thinking that
35:40I'm a Mac
35:41frock
35:42that I can
35:42mow them down
35:43I had the opportunity
35:47to coach
35:48John Mackey
35:49and this guy
35:49was a force
35:50we work on our
35:55two minute
35:56here that's
35:57paid off
35:58I think it was
35:59against the Lions
35:59where he caught
36:00a short pass
36:01and he ended up
36:02beating about
36:02five or six
36:03tacklers on his way
36:05into the end zone
36:05he's our number
36:08two tight end
36:09but his effort
36:10against Detroit
36:11is considered
36:11by many
36:12to be the number
36:13one play
36:14of all time
36:15one of those guys
36:16I really don't know
36:17why I broke
36:18those tackles
36:19but when I saw
36:20those defenders
36:21coming
36:21I made up
36:23in my mind
36:23that I was
36:24going to punish
36:24somebody
36:25I was going to
36:26run right through
36:26them
36:27that included
36:28his own teammates
36:29as well
36:30as Lions players
36:31some of us
36:34missed him twice
36:35yours truly
36:36finally we've
36:39lived long enough
36:40that television
36:41doesn't feature
36:42him much anymore
36:42I could watch
36:43that over
36:44and over
36:45and over
36:45again
36:46if John Mackey
36:49played in today's
36:50football
36:51we would be
36:52trying to say
36:53who's going to
36:54be the next
36:54John Mackey
36:55the first
36:56great tight end
36:57universal
36:58that no one
36:59would dispute
37:00is John Mackey
37:01John Mackey
37:02was special
37:03John Mackey
37:04was big
37:05and physical
37:06and could get
37:07down the field
37:07and was strong
37:08I think he might
37:09have set the standard
37:10for tight ends
37:12you can't teach that
37:13you can't coach that
37:14God pre-ordains that
37:16and John Mackey
37:17ran with that
37:17when they say
37:19John Mackey
37:19you think of greatness
37:21I have no problem
37:22with John Mackey
37:23being the second
37:24greatest tight end
37:25in history
37:26so you know
37:27the number one
37:28tight end
37:29of all time
37:30Tony Gonzalez
37:32if we're talking
37:33best tight ends
37:34of all time
37:35and you don't mention
37:36Tony Gonzalez
37:37get out of the room
37:38when you say
37:40tight end
37:41people think
37:42Tony Gonzalez
37:43in his 17 seasons
37:45with the Chiefs
37:46and Falcons
37:46Gonzalez became
37:48the all-time leader
37:49in receptions
37:50receiving yards
37:51and receiving
37:51touchdowns
37:52by a tight end
37:53the best tight end
37:55in the NFL
37:55he has to be number one
37:57everybody gets mad
37:58if you say
37:58future first ballot
37:59Hall of Famer
37:59that's the guy
38:00who's a first ballot
38:01Hall of Famer
38:01when you look
38:02at the numbers
38:03they compare
38:04favorably with
38:05great wideouts
38:05why not look for number 88
38:08every time
38:09that's a beautiful catch
38:10baby
38:10good job
38:11athletically terrific
38:15phenomenal athlete
38:17just an athletic freak
38:18Gonzalez's athleticism
38:21was home
38:21not on the grid
38:22but on the hardwood
38:24Tony Gonzalez
38:25was a really
38:26really good
38:26college basketball
38:27player
38:27I think
38:28we'll forget that
38:28he was really
38:34the first
38:34basketball
38:34to football
38:35guy
38:35guys saw
38:36how
38:36basketball
38:37skills
38:37could translate
38:38to the tight end
38:39position
38:39Tony Gonzalez
38:40was incredible
38:41Gonzalez
38:41catches it
38:42Kirkland
38:43was in perfect
38:44position
38:44but not for a
38:45California
38:46basketball player
38:47come over the back
38:48he was the modern
38:49basketball playing
38:50tight end
38:51who was athletically
38:52better than everybody
38:53else
38:53in an impossible
38:54matchup
38:55in terms of
38:56X's and O's
38:56before anybody else
38:58Tony started out
39:01as a very poor
39:02blocker
39:03he couldn't block
39:06his way out
39:06of a tissue box
39:07people have told me
39:09coaches have told me
39:10about Tony Gonzalez
39:11how much he has
39:12improved as a blocker
39:13over the years
39:14he wasn't a willing
39:15participant as a
39:16blocker
39:16he was a blocker
39:17he was a tight end
39:19through and through
39:19I'll say this
39:20as a former
39:21offensive lineman
39:22about Tony
39:22he blocked
39:24now he wasn't
39:25a dominating
39:26inline blocker
39:27but he was a
39:28very competent
39:29blocker
39:30Tony Gonzalez
39:31was not afraid
39:32to hit you
39:33Tony Gonzalez
39:36at number one
39:37statistically
39:40and what he has
39:42done is obviously
39:43amazing
39:43but it's hard
39:44to put a guy
39:45number one
39:45without a ring
39:46on his finger
39:46Tony Gonzalez
39:48might not have
39:49the hardware
39:49but he's got
39:50all the other
39:51tools to be
39:52our on-question
39:53number one
39:54tight end
39:54of all time
39:55he really is the
39:57best tight end
39:57in the history
39:58of the game
39:58and I think he's
39:59rated right
40:00where he should be
40:00I think if I was
40:01building my dream
40:02team and I had
40:03to pick any
40:04tight end
40:04in the history
40:05of the league
40:05I think Tony
40:06Gonzalez
40:06would be my
40:07number one guy
40:0715,000 yards
40:10show me
40:11the quarterback
40:12who's a hall of
40:13famer or one
40:14MVP with him
40:15like everybody
40:16else on this
40:17list
40:17most of the
40:18other guys
40:18on this list
40:19his quarterbacks
40:22are Elvis
40:24Gerback
40:24Rich Gannon
40:25before he was
40:26good
40:26Trent Green
40:28Damon Ward
40:30and Tyler
40:33Thigpen
40:34in Kansas
40:37City
40:38and then
40:38finally he gets
40:39Matt Ryan
40:40and he's old
40:41he's the greatest
40:48tight end to
40:49ever play the
40:49game
40:49every single year
40:51he was giving
40:52you 70 or 80
40:53catches
40:53he was giving
40:54you right around
40:55900 yards
40:561,000 yards
40:56he was giving
40:57you double digit
40:58touchdowns
40:59Gonzalez
40:59touchdown
41:00oh my goodness
41:01Gonzalez was
41:02the best ever
41:04at his position
41:05he's the best
41:07tight end ever
41:08to play in this
41:08league
41:08absolutely
41:09you have to be
41:11an old fart
41:12who thinks
41:12everything in the
41:13NFL got worse
41:14after 1990
41:15to say that
41:17Tony Gonzalez
41:17is not the best
41:19tight end of all
41:20time
41:20the future
41:21hall of fame
41:22tight end
41:22he is so much
41:24farther ahead
41:25of other tight ends
41:26in his career
41:27numbers
41:27and he's so
41:29transcendent
41:29receiving wise
41:31and for such
41:32a ridiculously
41:33long period
41:34of time
41:35he is
41:36the best ever
41:37period
41:38exactly
