00:00Atlanta goes to Miami.
00:02They go on the road and beat the high-powered Vikings.
00:07It's like driving down the street and get...
00:18All of a sudden, you're getting there.
00:20You're almost there, and all of a sudden,
00:22the light turns red, and you get side-swipe.
00:26It's like getting punched in the gut
00:28for Viking fans all over the United States.
00:33The most devastating loss that I've ever, ever been a part of.
00:38The Falcons have stolen the thunder from the Vikings.
00:43We won together.
00:45We dreamed together.
00:46We hoped together.
00:47And we lost together.
01:01We weren't that close.
01:06The Hulk was like...
01:08We were so proud!
01:10But here we are.
01:19The
01:20We were so proud!

06:26I think the letters stated that black guys weren't smart enough to coach.
06:31What it makes you realize is that there are a lot of people with a lot of hatred.
06:34I don't have that kind of hatred.
06:36You know, my thing is this, is that I'm going to establish that I'm every bit as good as
06:40anyone else.
06:41And that if I'm not as good as them, it's not going to be because of my race.
06:43It's going to be about my limitations as it's going to be about my limitations as an individual and what
06:47I could accomplish.
06:50In 1998, all three men embarked on a journey that would require all the determination they had.
07:05I was convinced that Randy Moss was a better man than people thought he was.
07:09I was also convinced that it's easy for a guy to get into a fight in high school and get
07:13blown out of proportion because of who he was.
07:15And I looked at what he had done the last two years at Marshall and it was clear that he
07:20had turned the corner and recognized what was good for him.
07:24In the draft, the Vikings weren't on the clock until the 21st pick.
07:30With the first pick of the draft, the Indianapolis Colts select Peyton Manning.
07:37Early I called Randy Moss and said, Randy Moss, Dennis Green.
07:40Ryan Lee.
07:41You know what?
07:42You're going to be there for us at 21.
07:43No, coach, I'm not.
07:44I'm going to go to this team.
07:46Andre Wadsworth.
07:48I said, well, I don't think so.
07:49No, if not that team, number eight, this other team's number 11.
07:52Charles Woodson.
07:53I said, it's not going to happen.
07:55Curtis Enos.
07:56Then I called Chris Carter.
07:57I said, Chris, what's going on, coach?
07:59I said, hey, I think Randy Moss is going to drop to us.
08:03He didn't agree.
08:04Trey Thomas.
08:05And I'm like, coach, you are showing up out your mind.
08:08Jason Peter.
08:10He said, you just watch and see.
08:12Anthony Simmons.
08:13I said, coach, there's no way he's going to slide another 11 spot.
08:18Kevin Dyson.
08:19Oh, there's no way.
08:20The word is Dallas is this player saying this.
08:23Dallas Cowboys select defensive end from North Carolina, Greg Ellis.
08:28So once he got past Dallas, did I finally, I said, okay, there's still a chance we might
08:33get him.
08:34But it's the draft and he's the most talented.
08:36Robert Edwards.
08:39And I said, if we do that, are you on board with helping this guy become the player he
08:43should be?
08:43And he says, absolutely.
08:45The Minnesota Vikings have selected wide receiver from Marshall University, Randy Moss.
08:54Once we drafted him, we weren't concerned about his personality because we knew he was just
08:59a young kid.
09:00People were concerned about how hard we work.
09:03So when people knew he was coming with me, they said, okay, he's either going to work or
09:07he going to quit.
09:16I really wanted to put a mark on his memory that he would never, ever forget as far as
09:22what it was going to take to be great.
09:26Oh my God.
09:28After a few workouts, I called Dennis Green and told him that he is the most unbelievable
09:35athlete that I have ever seen.
09:37Most guys, you just watch them in practice.
09:39I always do the opposite.
09:41I go over there and talk to the guys who are going against it.
09:45And I ask those DBs, what do you think?
09:47They were going, I'm not going against them.
09:55That summed it up right there.
09:56He said he's going to rip up the league.
09:58I'm going to come here and try to do the best I can to rip the NFL up.
10:01He said he was going to rip it up from the first time I talked to him.
10:04My whole goal is to just come in and do whatever I can to wreck this whole league.
10:09On opening day, the star was born.
10:19Back goes Johnson, rolling right, first and ten from the 48.
10:23Bomb downfield to Moss.
10:25Down there, juggles it.
10:26Oh, touchdown!
10:28Touchdown!
10:29And then he dove into the crowd and got a real good welcome.
10:35Minnesota won behind four touchdown passes from Brad Johnson.
10:39Two short ones to Chris Carter.
10:42Two long ones to their electrifying rookie.
10:53We've got a star on our hands in the NFL, Randy Boss.
10:58While the Vikings' young star was on the rise,
11:02their veteran quarterback fell the following week.
11:08Irony is they replaced him with an older quarterback.
11:13So, it wasn't injury.
11:16It wasn't age.
11:17It was just injury.
11:18You know?
11:19Brad Johnson would be lost for most of the season with a broken ankle.
11:24For Minnesota to continue on,
11:26desire, dedication, and determination would be vital.
11:31And then he told us,
11:32the train slows down, but it never stops.
11:35He said, now the train's going to make some adjustments,
11:37which was Cunningham coming in and taking over.
11:41Randall Cunningham hadn't been out of football,
11:44but was brought in as a backup in 1997.
11:48He won the game with a touchdown pass to his old Eagle teammate, Chris Carter.
11:52Remember, you know the thing about Randall played so well
11:58that I forgot what Brad hurt.
12:01You know, normally when your quarterback's hurt,
12:02you're like, man, when he's going to get back,
12:04he's going to be, okay, five weeks recovery,
12:05and then we're going to get him back.
12:06But Randall played so well that it was like,
12:09man, Brad, you can't come back.
12:13Because Randall's really the only guy that can get the ball to Randy.
12:24The Vikings were 4-0.
12:29They wondered just how good they could be.
12:32You know, to me, it's not about beating the Bears.
12:36It's not about beating St. Louis.
12:37It's about when we play the big dogs,
12:40are we going to have everything tight?
12:42They'd find out soon
12:43against the undefeated Packers on Monday night.
12:51John Randall's Vikings versus Brett Favre's Packers.
13:02Everybody in the country knew
13:04that we had a number four jersey of Brett Favre
13:07on one of our sleds in practice.
13:09Some of the guys, you know,
13:11they were always looking at Brett Favre like
13:12he was the Dalai Lama.
13:15They were going,
13:16oh, man, Brett Favre.
13:17I want to get his autograph.
13:19I'm going, oh, really?
13:22Favre.
13:22That come in and whoop my ass.
13:24So that's why we kind of brought that jersey
13:26in to kind of get guys, you know,
13:28just a number.
13:29Just another man.
13:31He's just up in Lambeau Field
13:33with a bunch of cheese and stuff.
13:34Don't mean s***.
13:36Lambeau Field in Green Bay on this Monday night.
13:39One of these teams will be 5-0 at the end of the game
13:41and in first place all alone atop the NFC Central.
13:45This is the big one right here.
13:46This is the one.
13:48If we get them,
13:49get in there,
13:50everybody's going to be turning around going,
13:52oh, wow.
13:52Now that's the team to beat.
14:00Randall and his teammates quickly chase down this rainy night.
14:03There'd be no catching Randy Moss.
14:06Two wideouts left,
14:07one to the right.
14:08Robert Smith to the backfield
14:09from the 48-yard line.
14:10Cunningham fake give off play action.
14:12Look, he tracks,
14:13throws down the field.
14:14And he has got Moss
14:16at the 15.
14:17He breaks away at the top
14:17to the 5.
14:19Touchdown, Vikings.
14:22Randall Cunningham
14:23launched three more touchdown bombs
14:25and passed for 442 yards,
14:28the most ever allowed in Packer history.
14:31It's like he comes silent,
14:33trying to grab some water,
14:34going,
14:35damn,
14:36we got to go back out there already.
14:38Playing the Minnesota Vikings
14:40is a track meet.
14:42Scream,
14:43Smith gets a block,
14:45picks up the first down,
14:47heading for the end zone,
14:48touchdown, Minnesota.
14:49We scored again.
14:51Damn, we scored.
14:52This is Randall Cunningham.
14:54And he's going for 7-4.
14:56And it is Moss
14:58getting position.
14:59Touchdown.
15:00He's unstoppable.
15:02It's just kind of like
15:02we would come up and rant
15:03and go,
15:03hey, man,
15:04you don't mind?
15:05Can we get at least 2,
15:063 more minutes
15:07on the sideline
15:08to get a break?
15:09Just a magnificent performance
15:11by this Minnesota
15:13offensive machine.
15:15That was a game
15:16that I can truly say
15:17from a quality team,
15:19we really,
15:20we embarrassed.
15:22The Vikings were 5-0
15:24and king of the henhouse
15:26in the NFC.
15:33to rally his fellow
15:37undersized defensive linemen.
15:426-footer for life, baby!
15:446-footer for life!
15:496-footer for life.
15:506-footer for life meant
15:52that we weren't 6'5,
15:55we weren't 6'6.
15:56What about that, bro?
15:57You know, I'm short, man.
15:59I'm short.
15:59I gotta put my hands up here.
16:00We were 5'9,
16:026'4 or 6'1.
16:046-footer for life!
16:06We may not be
16:07the biggest guys around,
16:08but we can get the job done.
16:10Come on.
16:14When I stepped on the field,
16:16I felt like I was
16:17somebody else.
16:19Oh, let's go, baby!
16:21Let's go!
16:23This other person took over.
16:27Regulators!
16:28Mount up!
16:29We're coming!
16:37We used to call him muscle.
16:41From his temple
16:42to his ankles,
16:43that's all there was.
16:44And he was one
16:45big muscle.
16:47Yeah, he was huge,
16:49but like,
16:50he's a short defensive end.
16:51Of course he can have
16:52huge muscles
16:54that compact it.
16:56When they say
16:57get everything out of your ability
16:58and put it out there,
16:59John Randall,
17:00he was it.
17:01Way to work, baby!
17:02Way to work!
17:03You the man, Johnny!
17:04You the man, baby!
17:06I can say
17:07I respect
17:08I respected
17:08no other player
17:09more than him.
17:10Let's go, boy!
17:13The night is young!
17:16Randall led a tough
17:17pack of runs
17:18and strays.
17:19They weren't big.
17:20They had lots of bite.
17:36The defense
17:37wasn't asked
17:39to stop teams.
17:41All it had to do
17:42was slow them down
17:43because the offense
17:44would always outscore
17:45their opponents.
17:48If you score more points
17:49than them,
17:50you win.
17:51So as far as
17:51our defense is concerned,
17:52those are the only things.
17:53Give us some turnovers
17:55and just don't get
17:56drug up and down the field.
17:57You know,
17:58we're not painting pictures.
17:59It don't matter
17:59if it's 31-30.
18:01It doesn't matter.
18:0331-30
18:04is just as good
18:05as 17-10.
18:07And this is
18:07what we're going
18:08to have to do.
18:08We were going
18:09to have to score
18:10to win.
18:12After two more wins,
18:14the Vikings were 7-0.
18:17In Tampa Bay,
18:19they faced a
18:23tough end
18:24and an old friend.
18:26The Buccaneers
18:27were led by
18:27Tony Dungy,
18:28Dennis Green's
18:29former defensive coordinator.
18:32Let's have some fun
18:33out here.
18:34We got Tony Dungy,
18:35one of our former coaches.
18:36Let's have some fun.
18:38It was like,
18:39for us,
18:39we were going
18:40against ourselves.
18:41And that was frightening
18:43because it just,
18:44you know,
18:45Tony knew us
18:45and we knew him,
18:46but he knew us
18:47a lot more.
18:50Dungy had created
18:51Minnesota's light
18:53but lightning-fast defense.
18:56He knew that
18:57runs between the tackles
18:58would wear them down.
19:05Both Warwick Dunn
19:07and Mike Allstott
19:08rushed for over
19:09100 yards.
19:14Keep doing that.
19:15Keep making our first down.
19:16They'll get frustrated.
19:20Bill Cunningham
19:21and the Viking offense
19:22scored 24 points.
19:25This time,
19:26it wasn't enough.
19:37we scored most of the time.
19:40They scored every time.
19:43And so,
19:44a little bit of a crack,
19:45in my opinion,
19:46showed its head right there.
19:47And as a result of it,
19:49they came back
19:49and they caught us
19:50because the defense
19:51then showed
19:53that we weren't as strong.
19:55we weren't a big strong team.
19:57Dennis Green's
19:58Minnesota Vikings
19:59will taste defeat
20:00for the first time this year.
20:01They'll go to 7-1.
20:03But it gave us a chance
20:04to refocus
20:05and also,
20:06it took the undefeated
20:07pressure off of us.
20:11He knew they'd give him
20:12a good fight
20:13if he just gave them
20:14a chance.
20:16I mean,
20:17that's what I've always done.
20:18You know,
20:19is develop players,
20:21give players
20:22a second chance.
20:23I love that aspect of life
20:25and that aspect of living.
20:26He felt like sometimes
20:27he didn't get the right shot.
20:29He felt like people
20:29didn't believe in him.
20:31That was the kind of person
20:33he was, though.
20:37When Johnny can't read,
20:38it's not that Johnny can't read.
20:40It's that the teacher
20:41is not a good teacher.
20:44At first,
20:46Chris Carter
20:46was one of his
20:47most difficult students.
20:49But under Green,
20:51Carter became a team leader
20:52and the Vikings'
20:53all-time leading receiver.
20:56What made Chris great leader
20:57is because he'd been
20:58through hard times.
20:59Chris Carter understood
21:00what hard times
21:00was all about.
21:02He knew that
21:03his playing
21:04in the National Football League
21:05was a gift
21:05and it wasn't guaranteed
21:07the last.
21:07And so he played
21:08every single game
21:09like it was his last game.
21:11Shut up!
21:12What about you?
21:12Let's go!
21:13Old man!
21:14Old man!
21:16Boy, you better hope
21:16you can play as long as me.
21:17Hey, when you get on your knees
21:19and say your prayers tonight,
21:20pray!
21:20I'm saying every day, baby.
21:21Pray you can play
21:22as long as me.
21:23There's nothing more
21:24dominating and powerful
21:25in sports
21:25than when you know
21:26a guy's going to get the ball
21:27and you do everything
21:28you can to stop him
21:29and he still does it.
21:33And I knew I had that.
21:35First down!
21:39That way.
21:43In his 16-year career,
21:45Carter scored 130 touchdowns
21:48and caught 1,100 passes.
21:54I tell you what,
21:55if Chris Carter ever thinks
21:56about the league in football,
21:57he's got a job.
22:05was trying to balance
22:06being a team player
22:08and a team leader.
22:11And I really hated
22:12playing with other players
22:14that I had to depend on.
22:15And I really had to adjust
22:16my temperament
22:17to rely on them
22:18because it was all of us
22:19trying to win.
22:20I'm pushing them.
22:21Don't worry about it.
22:22Just do your job, okay?
22:24Just do your job
22:25and I'll get the guy.
22:26Come on, Stoose.
22:27You have to say things
22:28other people won't say.
22:29Hey, you got to start
22:30dominating, man.
22:32Was I always a great teammate?
22:33No.
22:34Well, man,
22:35we off the field
22:35on that fourth down, man.
22:38I don't care, man.
22:39Do this out of bounds.
22:41I guess he would say
22:42he was pushing people
22:42to the limits.
22:44And it rubbed
22:45some of the guys
22:45the wrong way.
22:46Come on, man.
22:48You got to start
22:48making some plays.
22:49Don't call me out like that.
22:50Start to make some plays.
22:51Don't call me out like that.
22:51Make some plays.
22:53Don't call me out like that.
22:56not
22:56the favorite player
22:58on the team
22:59and all that,
22:59oh, that's irrelevant to me.
23:01But was I honest?
23:03Was I fair?
23:04And did I do everything
23:05I promised to my teammates
23:06that I would do?
23:07Those are the things
23:08that you have to ask.
23:10Just as Green
23:11had mentored Carter,
23:13it fell upon Carter
23:15to guide rookie Randy Moss.
23:20Rock.
23:20You know, I'm hard.
23:21Make the play.
23:22Yes, sir.
23:23Make the play
23:23won't nobody else make.
23:25That's what makes us different.
23:26Yep.
23:27The first thing
23:27I want him to know was
23:30that he could trust me.
23:32That's what I try to tell you
23:33all the time, man.
23:34That's why it's so important
23:35to catch every ball
23:37because for the confidence
23:38standpoint,
23:39there has to be
23:40a trust factor.
23:41So our trust
23:42could only be developed
23:43on the football field.
23:45Hey, big fella.
23:46Hey.
23:46Way not to push him off, too.
23:48Huh?
23:48Way not to push him off.
23:49Yeah.
23:50Because that guy
23:50is right back there.
23:51Uh-huh.
23:51The way to elevate.
23:54By midseason,
23:55Moss had learned
23:56the subtleties
23:56of the position
23:57and had shown
23:58his mentor
23:59the obvious.
24:00But he was
24:01freakishly talented.
24:03There's no doubt
24:03in my mind
24:04why someone
24:05would see this kid
24:07and give him
24:08the name
24:08Super Freak.
24:10They call me
24:11the Freak, man.
24:12Why don't they call you
24:13the Freak?
24:13Because I'm a freak
24:14of nature.
24:14You're going to see today
24:15just keep your eyes
24:16glued to the TV.
24:18I was wondering,
24:19man,
24:20what would someone
24:21have to do
24:21to earn that nickname?
24:23And I remember him
24:24hurtling the guy
24:25in mid-strike.
24:27He was built
24:29like a greyhound.
24:30So we treated him
24:31like a greyhound.
24:32You want a greyhound?
24:33Put him on the track.
24:35He reinvented the bomb
24:37in the National Football League.
24:39Back goes Cunningham,
24:41looks to throw,
24:41cocks and throws it,
24:42he got Moss down there.
24:44Oh!
24:45Touchdown,
24:46Vikings!
24:47The bomb!
24:48Moss is on the loose.
24:50Randy could do things
24:51that I had never
24:53seen people do.
24:54I was telling Randy
24:56privately,
24:58he was the best
24:58I'd ever seen.
25:01Moss was on his way
25:02to 1,300 receiving yards
25:04and the Rookie of the Year
25:05award.
25:06There's a bomb!
25:07Oh!
25:08Touchdown, Vikings!
25:09What drove him
25:10wasn't stardom.
25:12Moss wanted to punish
25:13all those teams
25:14that had ignored him
25:15in the draft.
25:17Especially one.
25:19He was
25:23pissed about the game.
25:25Man,
25:26he really wanted
25:26to make Dallas
25:27feel the pain
25:28of not drafting him.
25:31At Dallas game,
25:32we were talking
25:33to Randy,
25:34we were going,
25:35here's a team
25:35that said that
25:36you was a troublemaker,
25:37that they didn't want you.
25:39We don't want Randy Moss.
25:40I'm like,
25:41show them today
25:42what it's all about.
25:46Offset I formation,
25:47Evans and Smith there,
25:49the give to Smith
25:50and a flea flicker
25:51tossed back to Cunningham.
25:52Fires deep,
25:53got Moss,
25:54and five touchdown, Vikings!
25:57Moss caught just three passes
26:00for 163 yards
26:01and three touchdowns.
26:03Here's Cunningham
26:04back to throw it
26:05and going deep
26:06and he's got Moss
26:07and there's a flag on the play
26:08and Moss has caught the pass
26:09and is in the end zone anyway.
26:11Randy Moss is amazing,
26:12Randall Cunningham is amazing.
26:14Now it's going to get fun
26:15because they've got a pressure
26:16so there's going to be
26:18some flashlights
26:19he calls in the huddle.
26:20Cunningham,
26:21he looks out there
26:21and he's laughing
26:23and it's almost like
26:24the Cowboys defense
26:25can't defense them.
26:28Cowboys showing glitz.
26:30Minnesota,
26:33Randy Moss,
26:34breaks a tackle
26:34and Randy Moss
26:35racing down the sideline
26:37and Randy Moss
26:37just outruns everybody
26:39into the end zone.
26:40He is incredible.
26:41Lucky of the year,
26:43the boss!
26:45Led by their new star
26:47and his mentor,
26:48the Vikings were 11-1.
26:51Just one win away
26:52from a division title.
26:55It took everything we have
26:56and that's kind of the way it is.
26:58Hell of a job.
26:59That's the way to come down
26:59in this fight.
27:00Just relax,
27:01feel very proud
27:02of the job that we've done.
27:10He was sitting over there
27:11with little soccer shoes
27:13and he'd be sitting over there
27:14just kicking
27:14and, you know,
27:16we'd see that helmet
27:16and he had the one little bar
27:18and we used to joke
27:19talking about
27:20where'd you get that at,
27:20Tars or us or something.
27:22That's one unique helmet
27:23he's wearing too.
27:23Kicker's always nervous.
27:25Kicker's...
27:25That's a nervous ass job.
27:27Hey, I'd be nervous too
27:27if I got a helmet
27:28in one bar across the front of him.
27:32Just like his
27:33single little bar,
27:35Anderson had a simple
27:36little routine.
27:37Swing it,
27:38make it,
27:39pump the fist.
27:41So it went
27:42all season long.
27:46That's good, Gary.
27:48Good job.
27:50Anderson was a machine.
27:52He hadn't missed a kick
27:53in two years.
27:54But it's good.
27:55He's 16 out of 16.
27:57Never worried about it.
27:58And Anderson,
27:59perfect in the game.
28:00Put Gary in.
28:01He'll make it.
28:01He remains perfect on the ear.
28:03Never.
28:04Still perfect.
28:05It was a guarantee.
28:06And it's good.
28:07He continues his streak.
28:08Unbelievable kicker.
28:1034 of 34.
28:12Mr. Perfect.
28:12And he remains perfect.
28:14The same old solid
28:15as a rock,
28:16Gary Anderson.
28:18Automatic.
28:19Woo!
28:21Another constant in 1998
28:24was the ear-shattering roar
28:25of the Hubert H. Humphrey
28:27Metrodome.
28:29The dome was going to be rocking.
28:31The music was going to be playing.
28:33The cannon was going to go off.
28:35Ragnar was going to come down
28:35with his motorcycle.
28:37Brr, brr, brr.
28:38And part of them being there
28:39was Ragnar.
28:41Part of them being there
28:42was the loud music.
28:43But also part of them being there
28:45was put some points
28:47on the scoreboard.
28:47Welcome to the Thunderdome!
28:55From the 39,
28:56handoff Robert Smith
28:57finds a crack,
28:58breaks to the outside.
28:5915 to 45!
29:00From the 40,
29:01the 45 has the blocker!
29:0230, 25, 20!
29:04Racing to the 15!
29:05Cheers now!
29:06Touchdown, Vikings!
29:10The Vikings put up 48 points
29:12against the Bears
29:12to clinch the division.
29:14They scored 38 more
29:16in Baltimore
29:16and 50 against the Jaguars.
29:20The NFL single-season scoring record
29:22was in their sights.
29:24It's not like we set out
29:25to break the NFL record,
29:26but once we got close,
29:27we knew we were going to break it.
29:29I mean,
29:30because no one could stop us.
29:32Let's get it cranked up, man.
29:34We should be in the end zone by now.
29:35Let's crank it up.
29:37There's your pressure now.
29:38Spread left, Ox.
29:39Jet left, Zickler.
29:41Spread left, Ox.
29:42Jet left, Zickler.
29:43Take your high-end.
29:47Offensive coordinator,
29:48Brian Billick.
29:50Look at Brian Billick.
29:52They would have had like
29:53three, four championships
29:54with the defense they had.
29:57Certainly.
30:03All we need is like
30:0420 points next week
30:05to break the...
30:11503 Redskins.
30:13Randy Moss caught his rookie record, Seth.
30:18Anderson achieved perfection.
30:21We will go down
30:22as the first big place kicker, Bill.
30:24I'll tell you,
30:24we have the three
30:25that have been 15-1
30:26in the history
30:27of the National Football League.
30:32We're angry
30:33because of a declaration
30:35made earlier in the week
30:36by Cardinals cornerback
30:38Aeneas Williams.
30:43What we posted, I mean,
30:44I think it was,
30:45he's declaring war.
30:47Aeneas Williams declared war
30:48against the Vikings' receivers.
30:53Oh, you calling war on our receivers?
30:56War on your ass, too, then.
30:58Today!
31:01Well, Hall of Famer Aeneas Williams,
31:04that's where he messed up in.
31:05You know,
31:06he messed up.
31:09You're talking that garbage.
31:11You played for the Cardinals.
31:13He just won the first playoff game
31:14in 51 years,
31:15and he's talking trash.
31:44There was no way in this battle
31:46that Aeneas could win
31:49because either Aeneas
31:50is going to have to
31:50either guard me
31:57or Randy.
32:00Now, there wasn't a lot of people
32:01in the NFL just saying
32:02I can guard Randy Moss
32:04all around the league.
32:06And at that time,
32:07I felt like I was
32:08a pretty good player,
32:09and there wasn't a whole bunch
32:09of guys saying that
32:10I'm going to take Chris Carter
32:11out of the game, either.
32:13We had already declared
32:14war on everybody,
32:15so I'm glad
32:16they joined the battle.
32:18Hey!
32:19When Aeneas said
32:20he declared war on us,
32:21he got the wrong guy!
32:23Please!
32:23Y'all haven't stopped us yet!
32:26Even though the outcome
32:27was long decided,
32:29John Randall played
32:30the last play.
32:33It was like the last
32:34play,
32:36and Derek Alexander
32:37came over the top,
32:39and he hyper-extended
32:40my knee.
32:42And, um,
32:44man, it just,
32:46I can just remember
32:48the pain.
32:51Randall had one week
32:52to heal up
32:53for the NFC champion.
32:54At that moment,
32:56did everything that I had done
32:58that my payoff would be
33:00the Super Bowl.
33:00We brought our A game,
33:03we're going to show them
33:04our A game today.
33:05Be physical on three!
33:06One, two, three!
33:07Be physical!
33:11The 14-2 Atlanta Falcons
33:13stood between the Vikings
33:15and their Super Bowl dream.
33:22The first play,
33:24they chop-blocked me.
33:26I went from 85
33:28to, like,
33:2835
33:29like that.
33:31I just,
33:32I was just in the tank
33:33from that point on.
33:37Randall played nearly
33:38the whole game
33:39on one leg,
33:40and Minnesota
33:41quickly fell behind.
33:44Chandler drops
33:45the throw,
33:46cocks and fires,
33:47Anderson touchdown!
33:49And those Falcons
33:50with a dirty bird
33:51does this in the
33:51end zone,
33:53dancing up
33:53after a touchdown.
33:54The Vikings
33:55are not used to this.
34:05Back goes Cunningham,
34:06looking,
34:07cocks and throws it
34:08deep downfield.
34:09Moss,
34:10touchdown!
34:11Vikings!
34:12Finger to grab
34:13at the back
34:14of the end zone!
34:16The Vikings answer
34:17the Falcons' score
34:18and answer very quickly.
34:20Randy was having fun,
34:21the team was rolling.
34:24And I think it was
34:25critical
34:26of our psyche
34:27with him scoring
34:28that touchdown
34:29to get us back
34:29to even.
34:33Moss' clutch catch
34:35was followed
34:36by a critical
34:36end zone drop.
34:43Minnesota could have
34:44blown out the Falcons,
34:46but promising drives
34:47resulted in only
34:48one touchdown.
34:50they settled
34:51for field goals
34:52and led by
34:53just six
34:53at halftime.
34:55We had two more
34:56quarters to go
34:57and we had
34:58to finish him.
35:00We gotta kill him.
35:01We gotta just
35:02get rid of him
35:02so we can get ready
35:03so we can get some rest
35:04and get ready
35:05for the Super Bowl.
35:07Let's go, baby!
35:08Let's do it, baby!
35:09Alright, let's go get it!
35:17In the second half,
35:19Chris Carter picked up
35:19key first downs
35:20and backup receiver
35:22Matthew Hatchett
35:23caught his first
35:23touchdown pass
35:24of the season.
35:28Looks right,
35:29looks left,
35:30goes,
35:30touchdown!
35:32Matthew Hatchett!
35:34Late in the game,
35:35Minnesota led
35:3627-20.
35:38We're a high-flying team,
35:40highest-scoring team
35:40in history,
35:41but if we can run
35:42the ball
35:42and generate
35:43four first downs,
35:45we're going
35:45to the Super Bowl.
35:47Okay, here we go,
35:48alright.
35:49That's our best drive
35:50coming up right here.
35:59With just over
36:00two minutes to play,
36:01the drive stalled.
36:04But an all-but-guaranteed
36:05Gary Anderson
36:06field goal
36:07will give them
36:07a ten-point lead
36:08and certain victory.
36:10Let's go field goal!
36:12We think,
36:13okay,
36:13this will put the game
36:14out of reach.
36:15Let's put the nail in action!
36:17He can make it,
36:17he's made many of them
36:19before,
36:19no big deal,
36:21but with a slight
36:22hesitation going,
36:23he's just got it,
36:24but he's still got to make it.
36:26He's done it all year long,
36:27hasn't missed an extra point
36:28or a field goal.
36:29He'll go wins it.
36:31He makes this,
36:32pretty much this game
36:33is over.
36:3439-yard attempt.
36:36The spot,
36:37the kick by Anderson
36:38on the way!
36:39It's no good!
36:41Wow!
36:41Gary Anderson
36:42has missed a field goal
36:44for the first time
36:46in two years.
36:47Unbelievable.
36:49Shock effect?
36:50You can't afford
36:51to be shocked in football,
36:52but damn surprised.
36:54Because I was standing there
36:55like someone just
36:56punching my stomach.
36:58I was like,
36:59oh my God.
37:00Oh,
37:01oh my God.
37:01I just...
37:02The Vikings still led
37:04by seven.
37:05Two minutes remained.
37:06All they needed
37:07was one big play
37:09from their defense.
37:10Chandler,
37:11two,
37:12incomplete.
37:13Almost picked up,
37:14almost intercepted
37:15by a diving
37:16Robert Griffin.
37:18With 57 seconds left,
37:21the Falcons tied it.
37:24Overtime
37:24would decide
37:26who would go
37:26to Super Bowl XXXIII.
37:29The last thing
37:30I wanted to do
37:31was go to overtime.
37:32We had lost
37:33five starters to injuries.
37:35So going into overtime,
37:36we knew
37:37we were somewhat depleted.
37:39And offensively,
37:40it was one of those
37:41kind of games
37:41where we didn't have
37:42great continuity.
37:44All right,
37:45let's go.
37:45New game.
37:45First win score wins.
37:47Let's score first.
37:50Minnesota looked
37:51to win it
37:52with the play
37:53that won them
37:53so many games
37:54in 1998.
38:00That was close.
38:01I mean,
38:01that was that far
38:02from being a touchdown,
38:03a score,
38:04and a win for the Vikings.
38:07The Vikings could have
38:08put the game away
38:09by having...
38:10Cunningham
38:11for overthrowing touchdowns,
38:12Moss for dropping touchdowns,
38:15Robert Griffith
38:16for dropping interception,
38:18just the kicker.
38:24They could have iced it
38:25in the fourth quarter.
38:28Now,
38:29in overtime,
38:30a sideline John Randall
38:32could only watch.
38:34You know John Randall
38:35must be hurt
38:36if he's not in there.
38:37It was like
38:38watching your brother...
38:40watching your brother
38:41get his ass kicked.
38:42And you couldn't do
38:43s*** about it.
38:45You just like
38:46you were behind
38:47a barbed wire
38:48fence
38:49or behind
38:50a steel bar
38:50and you just
38:51got to sit there
38:52and watch them fight
38:53and there's nothing
38:54you can do about it.
38:55I felt like
38:56everybody in the stands
38:57were looking at me
38:59and I felt like
39:00I just
39:01let my whole team down.
39:03Let's go field goal!
39:05Field goal!
39:06Field goal!
39:07Gary Anderson
39:08had missed
39:09the 38-yard field goal
39:10earlier.
39:12Now Morton Anderson
39:13faced the same uprights
39:15from the same distance.
39:17All right.
39:18Our guy missed one.
39:18Let's see if their guy
39:19missed one.
39:22Oh, is this place quiet now?
39:24Yes, it is.
39:29The spot, the kick,
39:31quiet.
39:32No, it's good.
39:34I was hoping it was wide.
39:36It didn't.
39:37It went right
39:37between the uprights.
39:39The Falcons
39:40have stolen the thunder
39:42from the Vikings.
39:43It's like getting
39:44punched in the gut
39:45for Viking fans,
39:47not only in the stadium,
39:48but all
39:49over the United States.
40:00everything lined up
40:01just right
40:03for us
40:04and
40:05when he made that,
40:07it's just like
40:07everything just
40:09just went off like that.
40:11Every time I think about it,
40:12it's like
40:12the stick of the wind
40:13knocked out of me.
40:16There's nobody's
40:16going to feel sorry for us.
40:18Everybody's going to be
40:18disappointed,
40:19but nobody
40:19is going to be
40:20more disappointed
40:21than we are.
40:24Walking off that field
40:26and losing like that,
40:30I didn't even know
40:30if I wanted to play
40:31football anymore
40:33because I just,
40:34I felt like
40:35that I would never
40:38win after that.
40:43I think if we had
40:44beat Atlanta
40:47and if we had
40:48gone on and beat
40:48the Denver Broncos,
40:50that we'd have
40:51been called
40:51the best team
40:52in the National Football League
40:53in the last 25 years.
41:00Man, we had
41:00a hell of a team.
41:03We had a team
41:04that would
41:05step on the field
41:06with anybody
41:07and just
41:07step up for the challenge.
41:09We would play
41:09play your ass
41:10to the end of time.
41:12to the end of the game.
41:15Wow.
41:38Well, there's no ring
41:39on this finger
41:40because despite
41:41everything that we accomplished
41:42in 1998,
41:44we as a team,
41:45me as a head coach,
41:47did not earn it.
41:48The unpredictability
41:49of team sports,
41:51that's the flaw
41:52and that's why
41:53we go through the game
41:55and that's why
41:55we turn on the game
41:56because there is
41:58no sure winner
42:01ever.
42:04But it wasn't there.
42:07It wasn't meant to be,
42:08I guess.
42:09And that's something
42:10that would stick me
42:12for the rest of my life.
