00:00Whoops.
00:08What if Bo Jackson never got hurt?
00:11That's a big one.
00:12Okay, I got a story for you.
00:13So I told you I'd season tickets for the Raiders.
00:16It's against Cincinnati.
00:18Sellout of over 90,000 fans to see the final piece of this weekend's playoff puzzle.
00:23I'll never forget, I'm on the sideline when Bo Jackson takes the ball and he's streaking down the field.
00:32Pitch to Bo, outside right, turn it up the side, 30-35.
00:35He's from me to you when he takes the tackle.
00:38Holy Toledo!
00:40All of us were just like, oh, oh, oh, Bo.
00:45Bo knows pain.
00:47That's all I remember thinking about Bo.
00:49He's hurting.
00:50Well, there's a pivotal development.
00:54And he was done.
00:56Jackson's injury as the hip injury probably won't return.
01:00That was the final play in Bo Jackson's career.
01:04If that guy could have just continued his role for five, six, seven, eight years,
01:10who knows what would have happened?
01:12Who knows?
01:14It's like little kids chasing a grown man.
01:16Without a doubt, the greatest athlete of all time.
01:21We may never see anyone like Bo Jackson again.
01:25Damn, is he good.
01:26This is the biggest what if to me of any of them.
01:29I'm convinced if Bo Jackson didn't get hurt, he would still be playing.
01:33He would be the first running back whose career spanned four decades.
01:36The Raiders would have a couple more Super Bowls.
01:39The Kansas City Royals would have a couple more World Series championships.
01:43The Quebec Nordiques would have won some stuff.
01:45I assume he would have started playing hockey.
01:47Tiger Woods would have been the second best golfer.
01:49Everything would have changed.
01:51Everything but possibly the Raiders' home address.
01:55Remember, this is a time when owner Al Davis was looking to move his team from L.A.
02:00back to its original home in Oakland.
02:03If Bo Jackson...
02:04That's not a good what if.
02:05That's terrible.
02:07They should have never been in Los Angeles in the first place.
02:11Jackson's healthy, and the team's thriving.
02:13I suspect that the Coliseum would have been jam-packed in the early 90s,
02:17and then Al Davis probably wouldn't have had the appetite he did to return.
02:21This leads to a relocation shuffle, with the L.A. Rams still moving to St. Louis,
02:26but claiming Oakland as their new home in 2016,
02:29and the Chargers end up in Las Vegas.
02:35If Bo Jackson didn't get hurt, we'd probably all still be playing Tecmo Bowl.
02:38We're waiting for Bo 2017 to drop.
02:42Madden is who?
02:43He's like that guy with the turducken and the bus?
02:45Great.
02:45Good on him.
02:46But I'm playing Bo Jackson's video game.
02:49What's going on?
02:50I wish that he had not gotten hurt, just so we could hear more crazy Bo stories.
02:55He could bench press a car.
02:57He saved a baby calf.
02:58A bridge was out.
02:59Kids were in a bus stranded.
03:00He laid down.
03:01They used him as a bridge.
03:02Yeah, he ran around the planet and turned time backwards.
03:06I think the fact that he did get hurt makes him more of a legend.
03:11We may not even be talking about Bo Jackson.
03:13Maybe he would have had the rise in the fall.
03:15It catapults him through this mythical existence.
03:17Thank God, the Bo Jackson.
03:19We'll never have the answer.
03:21We'll never know.
03:23I mean, who knows?
03:25Bo probably does.
03:26No.
03:27Number 9.
03:28What if Monday Night Football never happened?
03:32Mmm, the NFL will be nowhere near what it is today.
03:37We'll have taken the NFL 10-15 more years to surpass Major League Baseball as the top
03:43sport in the US.
03:57That's the sound I always heard when I was a kid, man.
04:01Well, now you're here.
04:02Monday sucks.
04:04Except for Monday Night Football.
04:06That's the Redeemer.
04:07Monday Night Raw.
04:09Monday Night Raw also, if you like wrestling.
04:17Monday Night Raw.
04:41It's baseball, and that's why it is the national pastime today.
04:44This was something that turned the NFL from a Sunday afternoon activity to a lifestyle.
04:50Made it into an absolute brand.
04:52And since the 1970 debut of Monday Night Football, business has been very good for the NFL brand.
04:59It makes you wonder, what if we never had football on Monday night?
05:03Oh, no!
05:08If Monday Night Football wasn't created, there'd be a lot less chicken wings.
05:13My head just exploded.
05:14What are you talking about?
05:15No Monday Night Football?
05:16It doesn't compute.
05:18Look out!
05:19Weissner!
05:20A kick-off by Steve Leeson!
05:22And it's stooped and stooped!
05:24If Monday Night Football had never been created, I have a feeling the divorce rate would go down
05:28a good 15% nationwide.
05:30The game's final play is a Wilson lock to the end zone.
05:34Who has it?
05:34Who did they give it to?
05:36Yeah, I would have been on time way more Tuesdays.
05:40In better shape, for sure.
05:44Down the way!
05:46And to the end of the play!
05:47Oh, and are things going right for the Dolphins tonight?
05:51If Monday Night created, kids would have been a better student without Monday Night Football?
05:58Perhaps.
05:59But, would you and I be talking about pro football if I had been a better student?
06:03No.
06:04Hmm.
06:07We gotta bring Hank back, man.
06:09Get that Monday Night thing going.
06:11Ready for some football.
06:12So, if Monday Night Football were never invented, who would have the courage to ask Americans
06:17if they're ready for football?
06:18Are you ready for some football?
06:21Monday Night Party!
06:23What would Hank Williams be doing with all those rowdy friends?
06:27He would have to invite them over to watch Monday Night Swamp People and Antiques Roadshow.
06:34Go, man!
06:36Woo!
06:44If there is no Monday Night Football, I don't believe the NFL is where it is today.
06:49It's about to be a primetime play.
06:51It's Monday Night.
06:52Monday Night Football is arguably the biggest thing that ever happened.
06:56Should be higher on the list.
06:57That's a disgraceful thing.
06:58Monday Night Football is the greatest thing ever invented.
07:02It don't get no better than that, baby.
07:04Woo-hoo!
07:05The polio vaccine?
07:06Good.
07:07It's good.
07:07I'm glad we have it.
07:08Monday Night Football?
07:10Better.
07:12Number 8.
07:13What if Scott Norwood's kick in Super Bowl XXV was good?
07:18A 47-yard field goal try by Scottie Norwood.
07:22He can fire the shot heard round the...
07:25The 90 Bills are an all-time great team.
07:28And Steve Tasker's in the Hall of Fame.
07:31The world now.
07:32Puts it down.
07:34On the way.
07:35It's long enough.
07:36No good.
07:37Wide right.
07:38I hate wide right.
07:43Some of the 90's biggest franchises.
07:45They go into that Super Bowl the following year against the Redskins feeling different.
07:50They have a swagger about them.
07:51Thurman Thomas doesn't forget his helmet.
07:54Thurman Thomas at the 5.
07:55He goes in for the touchdown.
07:57His 4th touchdown.
07:58They knock off that Washington Redskins team.
08:02So now they're back to back.
08:03I'd love to say they would have won the Super Bowl.
08:06They...
08:07No.
08:07The 90's...
08:09Okay.
08:19For an unprecedented 4th consecutive Super Bowl...
08:244, baby!
08:26How sweet it is!
08:27This time, when they're leading 13-7 against the Cowboys in Super Bowl XXVIII, they hang
08:34on to win that game.
08:35They become the team that wins 3 Super Bowls in 4 games.
08:40Dynasty.
08:41You're...
08:41I mean, you're in the level with the Patriots.
08:50You know, the football goes three feet to the left.
08:52And how does that affect legacies?
08:54The Bills have won the Super Bowl!
08:56Boy, he's a legend.
08:57If he makes that field goal, I mean, they're building statues for him outside the stadium.
09:02I'd be wearing a Super Bowl ring and a Hall of Fame ring.
09:05That's what if.
09:06Jim Kelly would be president right now if we already made that field goal.
09:09And today, I join the greatest team in them all.
09:12If you think about Bill Parcells, for instance, how would people view him with one Super Bowl
09:18title, but then having lost that one?
09:21Wasn't Belichick the defense coordinator then?
09:24And Belichick may not have been Belichick after that.
09:27May have not...
09:28Oh, my God.
09:30Yeah.
09:31But now everybody would be a Bills fan.
09:33Like, every cool rapper would be wearing Bills gear.
09:37If Scott Norwood makes that kick, Ace Ventura is not made.
09:45One small twist in history affects all those lives.
09:49Ace Ventura should have had a jumping point for you.
09:51I made Jim Carrey a star.
09:54I don't want to live in a world where Scott Norwood hits that field goal.
09:58I think Scott Norwood missing the field goal was one of the best things that ever happened
10:04to Buffalo Bills fans.
10:05Because you look at Buffalo Bills fans now, and they've created this identity, the Bills
10:09Mafia.
10:09Bills Mafia!
10:11This is how we do it!
10:12Where they're, you know, tailgating and throwing through flaming tables.
10:16That kind of insanity can only be manifested by torture.
10:20So if you don't have the torture, if Scott Norwood makes the field goal, they're happy.
10:24They won a Super Bowl.
10:25Incredible.
10:26They don't have any sort of identity.
10:27I think this is the best possible thing.
10:29So thank you, Scott Norwood.
10:30I know I've never felt more love than right now.
10:34Number seven.
10:35What if Dallas didn't trade Herschel Walker?
10:40Every superhero, supervillain, they all have their origin story.
10:42Here it was, you know, Herschel Walker getting traded.
10:46One agent said it's the biggest trade he has ever seen.
10:49And the NFL, as one other, one owner said, it's a great train robbery.
10:55But whatever it is, we're happy with it.
10:58It was the absolute right move.
10:59Risky, high risk, you bet.
11:01This is an outstanding, outstanding trade regarding the future of the Cowboys.
11:07But a lot of people think that because they traded Herschel Walker, that's why they got
11:11all these picks.
11:12Don't forget, it was Herschel Walker and Neil Schlitz.
11:16He was a little-known third-string punter.
11:19That was a big part of it.
11:20Google it.
11:22We checked.
11:23There was no Neil Schlitz in the trade.
11:25But the Vikings did get the pro bowler, Herschel Walker, along with four draft picks that included
11:30two third-rounders, while Dallas received five players and three picks in return.
11:35Jimmy Johnson, he didn't want the players that came in the Herschel Walker trade.
11:39He wanted the draft picks.
11:41By cutting the players in the trade, Dallas received two additional first-round picks,
11:46two more second-round picks, along with a third-rounder.
11:50Cowboys got a ton of players out of this trade.
11:53Of course, the biggest names you remember are Darren Woodson and Emmitt Smith.
11:57And without those two guys, they probably don't go on to win three Super Bowls in four years
12:02in the 1990s.
12:03He's got a cover.
12:05What if the Cowboys deemed Walker too valuable to trade?
12:09Could the all-time leading rusher have been in the same backfield as the second most prolific passer?
12:15And if the Herschel Walker trade hadn't happened, maybe they end up with Emmitt Smith to pair with Brett Favre.
12:21And we got a dandy brewing.
12:23With Walker still in a Cowboys uniform, Dallas doesn't see the need to trade up in front of Green Bay
12:28and select Smith.
12:30That means with a 19th pick, the Packers choose Smith over Daryl Thompson.
12:35I think the Packers had a great chance to win more Super Bowls if they had a running back like
12:39Emmitt Smith.
12:40And now you're looking at more than one Super Bowl for that Green Bay Packers team.
12:44But the franchise and fan base this what-if affects the most is the one who has never won a
12:49Super Bowl
12:50and was defeated twice by Dallas in the big game.
12:53Or maybe the Buffalo Bills end up winning one or two.
12:57Western New York celebrates the fact that they've got themselves a couple of Lombardi trophies.
13:02Yeah!
13:04They've got a few!
13:06Buffalo's gonna win the Super Bowl!
13:12Jerry Jones certainly wouldn't have been in the Hall of Fame without the Herschel Walker trade.
13:16I think even he'd tell you that.
13:18The willingness to help us have the ammo to build a great team.
13:22Herschel, I'll always thank you very much.
13:24Who knows if Jerry Jones exists as we know him?
13:27I think he would exist.
13:29He would exist, but like Jerry's World wouldn't be a stadium.
13:32It would be like a car lot in Plano.
13:34Yeah, he'd be like a used car guy.
13:36He'd be like, come on down to Jerry's World!
13:38And he'd have one of those weird windsock things outside.
13:40Yeah, I could see that.
13:42Herschel Walker saved you, Jerry Jones.
13:45Number six.
13:47What if Johnny Unitas doesn't become a Colt?
13:53Vice President Nixon is among the jam-packed crowd
13:56with eyes on Johnny Unitas, the great Colt quarterback.
13:59Johnny Unitas, while he was invited to the Steelers during his rookie year,
14:04he lost out on the competition, so he was kind of, you know, out of football.
14:08Johnny Unitas was a construction worker in Pittsburgh.
14:13He was playing football on the weekends for $6 a game,
14:16and then he went to Colt's camp, and he ended up being one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history.
14:21Johnny Unitas has passed for more touchdowns and more yardage than any quarterback in history.
14:26Now, obviously, the thing that we all look at is,
14:29if Johnny Unitas never did that, we wouldn't have had one of the best quarterbacks.
14:33The way I look at it is, if Johnny Unitas never did that,
14:37we might have had one of the greatest construction workers in Pittsburgh history.
14:42I feel like Johnny Unitas robbed us of potentially a bunch of great buildings in Pittsburgh
14:47had we not lost Johnny Unitas' construction worker extraordinaire.
14:53Huh.
14:55If Johnny Unitas had stayed with the Steelers,
14:58then the Steelers arguably don't go 1-13 in 1969.
15:03They don't get the number one pick in 1970.
15:05That goes to the Bears.
15:07So you got the Bears take Terry Bradshaw.
15:10So you got Terry Bradshaw playing for the Bears,
15:12Gale Sayers, Dick Butkus.
15:14Gale Sayers, the superstar.
15:16He cuts, weaves, stops, and goes.
15:18He runs with power and precision.
15:20This is the eye of a hurricane.
15:22Whoever said it was calm never has met Dick Butkus.
15:26The Bears become the team of the 1970s.
15:28Then there is no Steelers of the 70s
15:32because you don't have those first overall picks with Mean Joe and Terry Bradshaw.
15:36So the Steelers' 70s dynasty never happens
15:39if in front of that you replace it with a Hall of Fame-level quarterback.
15:45If he doesn't go to the Colts, I mean, my gosh,
15:47we don't have the greatest game ever played.
15:49The United gets to reach it.
15:51It comes to the end of the second.
15:53Everybody insists that football became a TV sport
15:56in that championship game against the Giants.
15:58It brought the NFL into American relevance.
16:01Before that, it's boxing and it's baseball
16:04and it's horse racing.
16:06Football isn't what football is
16:07if Johnny Unitas doesn't go to the Colts.
16:09How about that?
16:10But to some, the rise of football was inevitable.
16:13The force was too strong with Unitas.
16:16The NFL was destined to explode.
16:21Like, it was like Luke Skywalker.
16:23Like, this was going to happen.
16:25Like, R5-D4 was going to explode
16:27because R2 needed to end up in Luke Skywalker's hands.
16:31The NFL was going to explode in the 50s
16:33and Johnny Unitas was going to be the one there
16:35carrying the lightsaber, so to speak.
16:37So, what if happened...
16:38And now, number five.
16:40What if Peyton Manning stays a Colt?
16:43What if...
16:44Well, that's a seminal event in pro football history
16:46is Peyton leaving Indianapolis.
16:49If the Colts decided not to cut Manning
16:52after missing the whole 2011 season,
16:54how would their fortunes have changed?
16:56That's a question we weren't able to get a consensus on.
16:59If Peyton Manning stays in Indianapolis,
17:02they'd probably go to another Super Bowl or two.
17:04And I don't think Manning or the Colts win a Super Bowl.
17:06Peyton Manning showed he had some good years left
17:08and maybe Indianapolis wins another championship with him.
17:11I think he finishes with one ring.
17:12They do get another ring.
17:14Maybe they get another Lombardi with the Colts.
17:17Manning doesn't get that second Super Bowl.
17:18That's the biggest takeaway of all that stuff.
17:21But at least we would have three years less
17:22of Papa John's commercials.
17:27You would have had a domino effect in that 2012 draft.
17:31The Colts weren't going to go and pick a quarterback
17:33when they already had one right there.
17:34What if they'd taken Trent Richardson number one?
17:37Because he went third,
17:38and they traded for him a year later,
17:40gave up a first-round pick.
17:42If Peyton Manning stays at Indianapolis,
17:45Trent Richardson is the greatest running back we've ever seen.
17:48What?
17:51And there's no way I'm wrong about that.
17:53You end up with RG3,
17:55probably going to the Cleveland Browns a few years early.
17:58Touchdown, Browns!
18:00RG3!
18:01The Cleveland Browns probably wouldn't still be looking
18:04to solve their quarterback crisis that they've had for, what,
18:0735 years now.
18:08But Andrew Luck probably then goes to the St. Louis Rams,
18:12and he becomes a star in St. Louis instead of in Indianapolis.
18:16I'm not paid to make those decisions.
18:18They're still in St. Louis.
18:19There's no way they're not in St. Louis.
18:21People are going.
18:22They're back to, like, the greatest show on turf.
18:25This place is going crazy!
18:29L.A. never gets its football team.
18:31Well, now it has the Chargers.
18:35By now you're probably wondering,
18:37wait, what happens to that team in Mile High then?
18:40Don't worry, we've saved the best for last.
18:43Does that mean Tim Tebow sticks around?
18:45Does that mean Tim Tebow still has a career in the NFL?
18:48Maybe Tim Tebow's still in the league.
18:50I didn't even think about this.
18:51If Peyton Manning doesn't leave Indy and come to Denver,
18:54then Tim Tebow may win a Super Bowl just like Peyton did in Super Bowl 50.
18:58I wouldn't go that far.
19:00If you think how Manning played that funnier,
19:01Tebow could do that.
19:03Tebow would have a ring.
19:04Yeah!
19:06Yeah!
19:07Tim Tebow might have a Super Bowl in this scenario.
19:09No, you can't do that.
19:10That, like, changes the whole course of the United States.
19:13That changes everything.
19:14He'd probably be the president.
19:16Guys, always got a plan.
19:17Let's do it, baby.
19:17I mean, look, if he would have won a Super Bowl,
19:19he definitely has a shot to be president.
19:21You just, that's just what it is.
19:23First eligible for the ballot in 2024,
19:26Tebow wins in a landslide.
19:28But unfortunately, it never happens because of our next what if.
19:37What if John Elway becomes a Colt?
19:40They would still be in Baltimore.
19:42So, I think John Elway going to the Baltimore Colts would have wide-ranging ramifications.
19:48But I think this, of all the things on this list, this might have the biggest butterfly effect of everything
19:54that could happen.
19:56Which is why this is our fourth greatest what if.
19:59Because if Elway doesn't demand a trade out of Baltimore, the landscape of the NFL is drastically altered forever.
20:06John Elway spurns Baltimore, and a year later, the Colts leave.
20:10These two events are not unrelated.
20:12If Elway stays in Baltimore, Baltimore stays in Baltimore.
20:16But it does leave some open pieces.
20:19Because you remember, some other teams started to follow suit and move.
20:24So, now the St. Louis Cardinals end up moving to Indianapolis.
20:28You have the expansion team in Arizona.
20:31The LA Rams become the Jacksonville Rams.
20:34So, now the Raiders are like, you know what?
20:35If we're going to be the only team in this market, we're going to stay here.
20:39So, they become the LA Raiders forever.
20:42St. Louis builds the Transworld Dome for the Cleveland Browns.
20:48So, we have the LA Raiders, the Phoenix expansion team, the St. Louis Browns, Indianapolis Cardinals, Jacksonville Rams, and Baltimore
21:00Colts.
21:01Like, it's just science.
21:05Broncos just become a team kind of without an identity.
21:10As a result of Elway not going to Denver, the Broncos never become a relevant playoff team.
21:16With Denver out of the playoff picture, that leaves the door open for a franchise left on the Super Bowl
21:22doorstep three times by Elway and the Broncos.
21:26Cleveland changes completely.
21:28Because they have two golden opportunities that get wiped away because of John Elway's magic.
21:35Oh, maybe the drive doesn't happen, right?
21:38All of a sudden, the drive doesn't happen.
21:40Tearing the heart out of Cleveland.
21:43They go to...
21:44We would have lost all those Super Bowls.
21:47And we say that Elway is there with the Colts.
21:54One, maybe two Super Bowls.
21:57They win one of those Super Bowls.
21:59Thank you, thank you, all you did!
22:01Super Bowl!
22:02And Cleveland is in the world's saddest city forever.
22:06Thanks a lot, John.
22:10Most importantly, if the Baltimore Colts never leave Baltimore, Barry Levinson has a happier life, never decides to make a
22:19TV show based on a book about murder cops in Baltimore.
22:22There's no homicide, which means everybody remembers Richard Belzer only as a stand-up comedian.
22:28There's no John Munch, which means Law & Order Special Victims Unit never happens, which means everyone only remembers Ice
22:36-T as a rapper, and nobody knows what to watch on the USA Network for all of the entire 2000s.
22:42Number three, what if Bill Belichick stayed with the Jets?
22:49Due to the various uncertainties surrounding my position as it relates to the team's new ownership, I've decided to resign
22:56as the head coach of the New York Jets.
22:58Following the 1999 season, just 24 hours after agreeing to take over as H.C. of the NYJ from his
23:05former boss Bill Parcells, Bill Belichick had a change of heart.
23:10I don't want to wish everyone loved the Jets.
23:12I'll carry Jets.
23:13Okay?
23:16It's the greatest drop the mic, walk off the podium in NFL history, isn't it?
23:21It's almost perfect.
23:22He sensed this.
23:23He sensed that the Jets, it's not going to work.
23:26Good decision by Bill Belichick.
23:29Bill Belichick immediately ascends to the head coach of the Jets.
23:33Huh, what would happen if Bill Belichick stayed on and was the head coach of the Jets for more than
23:39a couple of hours?
23:40The one that got away, Bill Belichick.
23:43Picturing him in like a cut-off Jets hoodie with the sleeves up.
23:47I don't know if it would have worked out the same way with the Jets.
23:52You're saying, great, you would have many Super Bowls.
23:54No, I don't believe it.
23:56If Belichick stayed with the Jets, they definitely would have been better.
23:59But they still would have needed a quarterback.
24:00Oh, God, would they have drafted Brady?
24:04If he would have fallen to the Jets in the sixth round of the 2000 draft, if Bill Belichick would
24:09have been there,
24:10frankly, those guys would have been just as successful.
24:13All right, let's go out and win.
24:15And instead of talking about 15 years of dominance and five Super Bowls with the Patriots,
24:20we'd be talking about our AFC East oppressors and overlords, the New York Jets.
24:26Nobody's ever won more Super Bowls.
24:28Nobody's ever been better.
24:31Who knows what the pass pedigree ends up being.
24:35Oh, man.
24:35Oh, I'm starting to actually maybe like this.
24:37Despite having great ownership and some great players, I think Bill Belichick is probably that organization's MVP.
24:46If Belichick doesn't come to New England, this doesn't happen.
24:49That's a fact.
24:50This doesn't happen.
24:51Okay, so let's squeak the scenario and say Brady did get drafted by New England.
24:55Could Belichick handle New York without him?
24:58If William Belichick had stayed with the New York Jetties, magic would have occurred.
25:04You would not have the butt fumble.
25:06You would have the butt touched up.
25:07Are we talking about Mark Sanchez having like five Super Bowl rings?
25:11Whoa!
25:12Let's go!
25:14That can't be possible.
25:17I'm not so sure that they would have went to seven Super Bowls because it is New York after all.
25:23And there's a lot of distractions.
25:26You lost the game, you idiot!
25:28Peyton Manning's resume made better because the Patriots wouldn't have been in.
25:35Two more rings.
25:36Very special.
25:42It would be hard to live in New York as a Giants fan if the Jets were really good.
25:47I feel like that would be annoying.
25:49Where would all the negativity come from if the Jets won and their fans were happy?
25:53We have this symbiotic relationship with the Jets.
25:56You know, they're bad.
25:57New Yorkers get to complain.
25:59Everybody wins.
25:59And if Belichick was there and suddenly the Jets were good,
26:03then all that hate and complaining would go to the Knicks.
26:07And I just don't think the Knicks could take that.
26:09Number two.
26:10What if the reception wasn't immaculate?
26:14This one particular play, I spent a lot of time thinking about.
26:18It's down to one big play.
26:2022 seconds remaining.
26:22The Oakland Raiders have taken a seven...
26:24Prashar probably doesn't get his job back at 74 or 75.
26:28So the Raiders win those Super Bowls.
26:32And I don't think Kenny Stabler leaves in 1980.
26:36And six leads.
26:38Hang on to your hats.
26:39Here come the Steelers out of the huddle.
26:42Gary Bradshaw has control.
26:44And Bradshaw is back and looking again.
26:48Bradshaw running out of the pocket.
26:50Looking for somebody to approach who fires a entire field.
26:53And there's a collision.
26:55And it's cut out of the rear.
26:57The ball is pulled in.
26:58And Franco Harris.
26:59Here's the short cut.
27:14The Steelers would lose the next week to the undefeated Dolphins.
27:18But what if instead of immaculate, it was incomplete?
27:23What franchise's fortunes are changed?
27:26This game sets a tone for how the 70s is played the entire way through.
27:36Then you don't have the start of the Steelers' dynasty, right?
27:39That play is what turned everything around for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
27:42And launched the greatest dynasty in pro football history.
27:45If it doesn't happen, I don't think that the dynasty happens.
27:49I don't think Pittsburgh has four Super Bowls.
27:50If they didn't win that game, I still say they go on to win the championship.
27:59It's a wonky rule that it went by division who hosted playoff games.
28:04So if the Steelers lose that game, the Dolphins, who were undefeated at the time,
28:08would have to go to Oakland to play a playoff game.
28:12Very tough place to play.
28:14Especially for the Dolphins, who had never won a road game in Oakland in their franchise history.
28:20Like, what would have happened to the Dolphins and their legacy had they lost the perfect season,
28:25if they had lost in the playoffs?
28:26The Dolphins should definitely send Franco a bottle of champagne.
28:29Because clearly, he kept their perfect season alive.
28:36I think it impacts the Raiders more.
28:40Maybe Ken Stabler, his aura just grows with that game.
28:44Kenny Stabler has a 30-yard touchdown run that nobody remembers.
28:48Stabler to pass, steps away from the rest.
28:50He's going to run up the left side.
28:5130, 25, 20, 50, 10, 5.
28:55Touchdown, Kenny Stabler goes all the way.
28:59Like, that would have been the play that everybody recalls.
29:01They think of Kenny the Snake Stabler.
29:03And how does the toll of losing from the immaculate reception affect the burnt-out coach who retired at age
29:0942?
29:11That play bothered me then, bothers me today, and will bother me until the day I die.
29:16He gets that Super Bowl, Super Bowl VII, in 72, and he gets Super Bowl XV.
29:24Now he has three Super Bowl rings.
29:26Then you start talking about a coach who is considered the greatest of all time.
29:31Do we have a Madden video game?
29:32Hi everyone, welcome to Madden Football.
29:35Number one.
29:36Why do we not have a Madden video game?
29:38Well, the AFL and NFL didn't merge.
29:41It was obvious.
29:44American football would be dead.
29:47Dead.
29:48See the most important single mo-
29:52and would have turned right all the progress that Unitas made up to 1970, if the league didn't emerge in
29:591970.
30:02They would have undid that.
30:05The NFL would have been an irrelevant league.
30:10Omence in NFL history, that merger, because it led to the expansion that we see now.
30:15It was bound to happen.
30:17That's where you lose me on number one.
30:20There's nowhere where a sport has managed to have two leagues that operate independently of each other, and it lasts.
30:26Really?
30:27I don't know.
30:28Really?
30:31Hey, the MLB was alongside the Negro Leagues for over 20 years.
30:40AFL, NFL, military, because very simply, the NFL doesn't exist without it.
30:45Seriously.
30:45All right, it's over.
30:47And the what-ifs related to this range from the ridiculous-
30:50If there's no AFL-NFL merger, then you're talking about a whole different universe.
30:57To the absurd.
30:58I could be appearing on the AFL network right now.
31:02I could be earning twice as many paydays.
31:04I really feel like I got the raw end of this deal.
31:09Think about the AFL.
31:10They threw the ball all over the place.
31:12They had characters.
31:13It was fun.
31:13It was the original fun league.
31:15Unbelievable.
31:16There were policies.
31:17There were rules.
31:18There were stylistic issues that the NFL adopted from the AFL, which makes the NFL what it is today.
31:24So imagine if the leagues didn't merge, and the NFL remained the stuffy league of the power sweep,
31:29and the AFL the flamboyant home of the vertical pass and other innovations that we now see as the norm.
31:36And a baby!
31:38Hey, what's up, baby?
31:39If the merger never happened, I think it'd be fun to have two competing leagues.
31:44I like to separate between the model.
31:46You would have fans who are like ardent AFL people.
31:49You never see them play until the Super Bowl.
31:52There could have been a place for two sort of leagues, I suppose.
31:56But you'd have the premier league, and you'd have the secondary.
32:01And I don't think it would be the power of what you have today.
32:04They look like they're flat as hell.
32:06Wow.
32:08That is really bad.
32:11On another day, in another year, it will surely be the turn of the AFL.
32:16Here's an argument.
32:17Could the AFL, if somehow they could have gotten the stranglehold on it, could the AFL have been the NFL?
32:23You know, was there a chance that the New York Giants could have disappeared, or the Pittsburgh Steelers could have
32:27disappeared?
32:28Are you turning me that way?
32:30You wouldn't have the Super Bowl, and imagine that.
32:34Super Bowl, baby.
32:35Drink, I'm sure.
32:36Think about all the history that's happened, and how that game has transcended.
32:41Sports really has become a national holiday.
32:43So, you'd be robbing us of a national holiday, and the best party of the year.
32:51This is ridiculous here.
32:53Man, if a world without the Super Bowl is the outcome of our number one run-off,
32:58then we're sorry we even proposed this show.
33:03Someone get us back to reality.
33:05Here's the thing.
33:05If the AFL merger didn't happen, it still would have eventually happened.
33:09Because any time there's two businesses that big, they're bound to link up and form like a superpower.
33:15So, the what if of if there had been no merger is that there would have been a merger.
33:20Thank God.
33:21Yes!
33:23Forgive me if I get emotional.
33:24Everything is great.
33:26Yes!
33:28Hallelujah!
