00:00number one on the new england patriots list hmm oh certainly i mean the great
00:04patriots of years past beginning in the 1770s company
00:11first witch
00:14sam adams amazing they were playmakers
00:26many patriots teams during the franchise's first three decades didn't have a lot of
00:31get up and go it seemed like their entire existence everything that could go wrong
00:39did and only nitwits like me were sitting there with my little freckled face and my stupid scarf
00:46and my ridiculous snorkel wondering when jim plunkett was going to throw a touchdown pass
00:52or whether or not harold jackson was indeed 71 years old
00:58i didn't have a patriots snorkel i had a green snorkel with the orange optic interior and a
01:05patriots pom-pom hat
01:09i covered the game when irving fry got a car accident at halftime
01:13at halftime you know who gets in a car accident at halftime
01:19it was crazy
01:21despite the madness some all-time great patriots did emerge
01:29fast forward to the 2000s and winning super bowls became the standard we are all patriots
01:37but if you expect to see a certain coach wearing a particular garment on our list you'll be
01:43disappointed
01:44player's game i'd do anything for you so what kinds of players should make the cut
01:52you'd have to have success for a lengthy period of time and you have to do something special
01:59intercepted the patriots are going to be super bowl champions again obviously you can have great
02:04players on not so great teams quarterback steve grogan leads one of the most diversified attacks in the
02:09league
02:11so what's more important all pros or pro bowls we're leading teams to championships the problem
02:19it is you've got so many that are very fresh in people's minds because of the run that bill belichick
02:24and tom brady have had great job what a great job let's take every second when you look at a
02:29list of top
02:3010 patriots it's tough physical smart football player disciplined and does his job look fellas it's just
02:36about doing our job this is a tough list to crack
02:39the new england patriot of all time adam vinatieri the patriots are not the dynasty they are today
02:48without adam vinatieri it's simple as that adam vinatieri arrived in new england in 1996 but his rookie
02:54year began in disastrous fashion the kick is no good we had some big misses early in the year in
03:01buffalo and it is no good and then almost was cut three or four weeks into the season until
03:10vinatieri had that game against the jaguars he had five field goals and just carried them to a win in
03:15overtime the kickoff on the way and it is good with the three it's live
03:25clutch clutch clutch clutch there's no question we have to call him the most clutch kicker of all time
03:30the dynasty in new england was built on that right foot that snowy day against the raiders adam
03:36vinatieri will attempt a 45-yard field goal to try to tie it a 45-yard line drive a dot
03:43through the
03:44uprights that's the greatest kick vinatieri ever made kick on the way and it's a goal
03:50i remember steve stable telling me that that was the greatest kick in nfl history when you watch you
03:55still can't believe it made it through the uprights it just drifted and drifted and drifting you can barely
03:59see it through that cinematic snow that kick launched the patriots dynasty
04:06yes sir
04:11super bowl 36 still the only super bowl ever decided on the last play of the game
04:15set to go snap ball down kick up kick is on the way and it is good two years later
04:23beats the
04:24panthers on the last second field goal in the super bowl
04:31one two three i don't know if any other kicker has one such memorable kick he has three of them
04:38three of them the kicker who ran down herschel walker from behind it's a remarkable feat but for
04:46a kicker to do it it's something special it is a foot race for the terry diving
04:52that's when adam minatieri went from a kicker to a football player and maybe why he
04:56earns a spot on the list closing speed i've never used the term closing speed with a kicker you know
05:02he is involved in these great plays but he was also involved in some of these weird plays the
05:06extra point attempt is coming and after they're going to run for two adam minatieri when you have
05:13the ability to give it to your kicker in an untimed down with no defense on the field
05:19i mean that's that's a weapon then he had a touchdown pass 22-yard field goal attempt
05:24for adam minatieri it's a fake pass to the left touchdown patriots that sort of just adds to the
05:30minatieri legend i think but adam minatieri is after all a place kicker and he'll retire having
05:39played more years as a cult than a patriot so does he really belong on this list i'm okay with
05:45him
05:45being number 10 i wouldn't say it's a slam dunk there's no way you can argue against military
05:50being on this list no way for the hall of fame i think there's an argument to be made that
05:56minatieri could be hired who is more responsible other than tom brady for those first three rings
06:01for the patriots coming up which patriots
06:14i can promise you as a kid growing up in boston if i was playing touch football and i was
06:21lined up
06:22at wide receiver i was stanley morgan the patriots found their 1977 first round draft pick at the
06:29university of tennessee at tennessee they sing the praises of stanley morgan but while he caught
06:35passes in college on occasion he was a running back by trade no one first took so we can do
06:40with
06:40this guy and uh they knew what they were going to do which was throwing the ball
06:46what you saw right away was a difference in speed stanley morgan scored his first touchdown
06:53as the patriots roll past the jets 24 to 13. even the guys who were as fast as him didn't
07:00look as
07:01fast didn't look as smooth didn't look as athletic teams were backing up when he came out of the
07:13hut they were petrified of stanley morgan back then you go deep and i'm gonna hit you and see what
07:18happens and he was just so explosive so great at getting downfield probably the most
07:22exciting single offensive throughout the patriots have ever had probably a big play receiver now
07:30might average what 13 14 15 yards a catch sandy morgan routinely averaged better than 20 yards a catch
07:4019.2 yards per catch over 13 seasons that's more than granty moss
07:44let's put down one side and find 81 i'm going to terrell owens it's gonna be hard for you though
07:50lynn swan
07:55it's one of the top 10 of all time he was catching the ball 20 yards downfield he wasn't catching
07:59it
08:00eight and then taking it so air traveled was probably more significant than any player in nfl history
08:10you can look at stanley and some people would say oh he's a one-trick pointer
08:14he's got morgan on the fly he dropped it to 20 now with 10.5
08:17he was a home run hitter that's how they played they played the vertical game in those days he wasn't
08:23just great downfield receiver he was also pretty good with yards after catch a lot of people would
08:29say well you don't see him catching in traffic that's because he ran past all the traffic the
08:32traffic was let's say slow down will you
08:50stanley morgan to me is the most underrated patriot in the history of the team and maybe
08:57one of the most underrated players in the history of football and it is
09:02touchdown stanley morgan stanley morgan is better than many of the wide receivers in the pro football
09:07hall of fame number nine is a good spot for stanley morgan i probably would push him higher just
09:15because i think that he's the great unrecognized player right sideline touchdown stanley morgan you put
09:25him on these championship teams all of a sudden that's a different ranking fires deep touchdown
09:31patriot
09:33stanley morgan is the best wide receiver in patriots history
09:40the number eight new England patriot of all time steve nelson
09:44oh you could say that that's probably about right can i come up with 10 patriots that are
09:51better than him i don't know why he's on this list i mean steve nelson are you serious steve nelson
09:56steve nelson made the stop for new england if you took him to 11 i'd be stomping my feet and
10:01say what are you thinking about oh i can see ron borges arguing for him and i can certainly see
10:05players arguing for him absolutely one of the great all-time patriots
10:11nelly was a guy that just wanted to play football when nelly hit the stage no not that nelly this
10:19one
10:21when nelly hit the stage he made a big impression i actually was a ball boy for
10:26the patriots as a kid and i can just remember certain guys you respect i referred to him as
10:30mr nelson great beard four daughters four daughters
10:35come on get your head out of the gutter he's thinking about that guy's daughters
10:45you really wouldn't want to get on nelson's bad side our number eight patriot racked up more than
10:51100 tackles in nine different seasons he's the leading tackler for the patriot defense a very
10:58patriots-esque 1776 tackles in his career as a patriot he went to a couple of crow bowls
11:05during a time when the patriots didn't have a lot of success he's one of those definition guys steve
11:11nelson number 57 was the glue that held this youthful defensive platoon together he's one of
11:18those sort of team icons that every team has if you're gonna mention the top 10 patriots nelly better
11:25be in there someplace nelly being one of the great patriots comes from him being smarter than everybody
11:36around him nelson beans of this defense exceptions for inside linebacker is absurd nowadays most inside
11:42linebackers aren't on the field on third down and back then they threw the ball less than they throw now
11:58he was diagnosing things like coaches doing meetings but he was doing it on the fly
12:05i remember watching him and marveling at how he never seemed to be out of position was always where
12:12he was supposed to be steve nelson the inside linebacker does for this defense what singletary
12:18does for the chicago defense because he didn't play on great teams he might be underrated in the
12:24course of nfl history but on the patriots he's certainly a top 10 player no doubt i'm shocked
12:29that i'm saying this but i feel like he knocked this one out of the park feels just right up
12:33next
12:34good goes to go tv not that tv the number seven new england patriot of all time troy brown
12:42if someone wanted to be a professional football player and they came to you and said who should
12:47i model my game after the first player i would tell them would be troy brown need a good wide
12:52receiver
12:52on the outside troy brown's got you fire's end zone touchdown troy brown need a great guy in the slot
12:58who can make a clutch catch there's troy brown oh boy is he something want your punt return troy
13:05brown.com troy brown at the 45 he heads left to the 50 straight up the middle of the 45
13:10to the 40
13:11to the 35 to the 30 25 15 10 touchdown troy brown fancy running by troy brown for a go
13:19-ahead touchdown
13:23let me get this straight troy brown has 6600 yards for the patriots
13:30he's at seven stanley morgan who had 10 000 with the patriots is at 10
13:37stanley morgan nearly doubled troy brown's receiving yards per game and troy brown had tom
13:44brady and drew blussel throwing to him
13:49stanley morgan had steve grogan and tony easton as his quarterbacks
13:55and in in young doug flutie
14:02put it all together in accounting for quarterbacks he might be four times the receiver troy brown was
14:15in addition to receiving and returning punts our number seven patriots spent time at defensive back
14:21in 2004 because of injuries to the secondary
14:25they got troy brown out there man come on how many guys in their 30s are even capable of playing
14:31both
14:31ways and picking off three balls for you it's an effective pick up by troy brown maybe 70 80 years
14:38ago guys did that more often but in the modern nfl to do what troy brown did it
14:43me to do that it was like well coach i do my best with the smile on my face that's
14:48the way i go to
14:48work every day good job by troy brown on the fast intersection do whatever you can to help your football
14:54team win troy brown to me is the consummate patriot before tom brady was tb up in new england troy
15:05brown was
15:05the original tv we're working troy i think you could take troy brown off the list and put teddy
15:11bruski on the list i think you take teddy bruski off the list and put mike vrabel on the list
15:15you
15:16could take mike vrabel off the list put richard seymour on the list any one of those guys fits that
15:22mold i wouldn't do anything you think that's what you do i think you are the embodiment of what this
15:27team represents troy brown's a good pick to stand out amongst the vrabels the brewskis because there's so
15:32many moments for him so many big plays that troy brown was involved in troy brown was mr patriot
15:40with just 31 touchdowns why would we put troy brown on this list at number seven well the numbers
15:48don't tell the whole story the patriots win it over time no no no no no no no we're not
15:55using that
15:55excuse troy brown had true blitz so who was throwing the ball 40 times a game and he couldn't
16:01even rack up numbers and we're not using that excuse he should have had numbers if he was that good
16:12bill belichick says stats they're for losers guys put up bigger numbers and shorter spans but they
16:17didn't have as big an impact on the organization as troy brown did he snapped the ball down the kick
16:22is blocked
16:22the kick was blocked he's the one who scoops it up starts running with it it's going to be picked
16:27up
16:27by troy brown laterals it to antoine harris and he goes all the way for a touchdown without that play
16:35there is no super bowl 36 there may be no dynasty he just always made those clutch plays when you
16:41needed him perhaps none bigger than that strip him all in the cream intercepted at the 30 yard line
16:46and took him down and a fumble on the interception the patriots recover they win the game troy
16:52brown is really one of the players and patriots fans associate with oh yeah that was pretty good
16:57eating him stripping marlon mccree of the ball yeah that was pretty good
17:06for one of the all-time patriots
17:08troy brown gets a rousing hand from the folks in foxborough he's not a pro football hall of
17:13famer but he's certainly one of the greatest patriots ever the number six new england patriot
17:19of all time ty law we played the patriots one time and there was this play we were going to
17:27call
17:27on third down and i really didn't like it and i even mentioned to the coaching staff ty law is
17:31going
17:31to sit on it it's not going to work and they were like just trust us so we run it
17:41exactly like my worst fear but it wasn't just like some random interception they like stopped the
17:47game the interception by ty law ties in with raymond claiborne the patriots record book for
17:52the most career interceptions at 36. it was this awful nightmare like those commercials you see of
17:57someone at the grocery store going through and they're they're buying something embarrassing and
18:01then all of a sudden you're our one millionth customer dude it's just like oh my gosh
18:07ty law is probably the best cover corner i've ever played with and seen long and
18:16ty law had his coming out party in dallas in 1996 when they put him on michael irvin
18:21fires to the near side and it is and that's what ty law always wanted every single week
18:28he wanted to line up face to face with the best guy on the other team
18:35he was one of those guys who you could stick out on the opposing number one
18:41and you knew he was going to take care of that side of the field firing long and deep and
18:45intercepted by ty law spectacular
18:51ty law always seemed to recognize nobody could ever forget that you know the greatest moment of
18:55his career picking off kurt warner and scoring a touchdown in super bowl 36
19:01his hand high over his head you know running down the field
19:06any great player you have to say this about them what they do when the brightest lights are on
19:10when the stage was biggest ty law made plays they don't win that game without
19:16ty law intercepted nine peyton manning passes in his career manning
19:23when ty law was in a contract squabble with the patriots he said don't you understand how good i
19:28am i'm tired i think you'd be in over one reason he goes you know how many times i picked
19:31up in manning you know what peyton manning is going to put me in the hall no other player had
19:36more than six manning votes it to the right could be picked off it is that counting or not counting
19:42postseason peyton manning put him in the hall i walked and did himself to patriots fans forever
19:49when he picked off mighty peyton manning three times in the 2003 afc title game jumps it off to
19:54the right and he's picked off standing in there fires to the right intercepted ty law
20:00peyton manning made what's now known throughout new england as a peyton manning face i would say
20:04that he belongs in the list just for that game alone
20:09law bounced around with three other teams for the final five seasons of his career
20:13so did he land in the correct spot on our list he belongs in the list even if he wasn't
20:19done for
20:19hire in later years yeah i love him at number six i think he's another guy like stanley morgan that's
20:24a candidate for the pro football hall of fame i think you move tie up a lot higher than six
20:37certainly just corniest ever play in new england coming up which player who left the patriots
20:42still found his way onto the list you're trying to have it both ways and now the number five
20:49new england patriot of all time mike haynes
20:59from 1970 to 1975 the patriots weren't so great at defense
21:04that's compiling a 26 and 58 record that all changed in 1976 when they drafted the eventual
21:11defensive rookie of the year new england as soon as they draft him they're 11 and three in the
21:19playoffs they are the only team to beat the eventual champion raiders that year
21:25and they narrowly lose to the raiders in the playoffs but it's better than being a loser
21:34and selects mike haynes defensive back arizona state the weakness was the defense and they made some
21:40changes in the defense brought some guys in and i was lucky enough to be one of those guys
21:44haynes blitzed into the nfl with salvos of publicity which hyped him into instant super starter
21:50mike haynes as a rookie eight interceptions and haynes came up with an interception he made an
21:56immediate impact while he was wearing that pet patriot you love on his helmet
22:03mike haynes was the measuring card for cornerback play in new england the big smooth corner who could
22:09do it all he's tackled by mike haynes what it means to have a shutdown corner in new england started
22:15with mike haynes before there was neon dion before revis island heck even before daryl green if you
22:27needed somebody to lock down your best receiver it was on the new england patriots it was mike haynes
22:33yeah you kind of remember mike haynes changing the way you looked at the patriots because he was
22:41a explosive player both on defense and in the kicking game from 1960 through 1975 no punt returns
22:52for a touchdown in team history mike haynes comes in two in his first year any style you wanted to
23:00play
23:00any area you wanted to play in mike haynes could succeed oh my god he was just so dynamic an
23:07incredible
23:08athlete did so many different things effortlessly he runs it in for a touchdown
23:18mike haynes because this show is the top 10 patriots of all time not the top 10 cornerbacks
23:24his appearance on this list caused some controversy because of one aspect of his career do you hold
23:31against the fact that he only played half his career in new england they let him go in a salary
23:35dispute and traded him for a bunch of draft picks one of the biggest mistakes i've seen a team make
23:40in history picked off by haynes seven years here seven years there won a super bowl there six pro
23:46bowls here mike haynes he has a place on the list you're trying to have it both ways over there
23:52at the
23:52nfl network i appreciate that but it's like putting babe ruth in the red sox hall of fame the patriots
23:57don't have a ton of pro football hall of famers and if you played half your career in new england
24:01as
24:01a pro football hall of famer he should be on the list if he had his entire career in new
24:09england
24:09he would have gone down as being one of the all-time greats in this organization maybe second to you
24:16know who on the list maybe there's the player you could say andre tippet but it's maybe their greatest
24:24defense the number four new england patriot of all time i'm andre tippet he was a force
24:39andre tippet has been all over he was sacking the quarterback and he was making plays that they
24:47had never seen around here 1984 team record 18 and a half sacks franchise record holder with 100
24:53career sacks you see some of the plays he made just shedding blockers and standing up and got them
24:58thrown into the turf he just brought a unique violence to the game can't block tippet he was
25:08among the most dominant defensive players in football in the middle of the 1980s and no one
25:12can deny that when you watch andre tippet play football week in a week out he was as good as
25:16any player ever at that position i put andre tippet up there against lawrence taylor any day of the week
25:25here comes lawrence taylor in trouble it was hard to differentiate lt from andre tippet he was putting
25:35up lawrence taylor numbers playing without all the talent around him that lawrence taylor had oh what
25:41a big hit by andre tippet lawrence taylor was the best uh outside linebacker ever to play the game
25:47tippet was that just barely next level of guys down to say you're one slight notch below the
25:55greatest player ever to play the position that's still pretty damn good
26:00one of the things he got the most publicity for was he was you know seventh degree black belt in
26:05some form of karate football is a fight in a lot of ways it's it's hand-to-hand combat and
26:11being able
26:12to utilize martial arts into the football process was really easy for me andre tippet did a little
26:18karate stuff right there he'll played with only two pro bowl players on defense his entire career
26:28two different guys who went once each he was one of the few players that offensive coordinators had to
26:35game plan for andre tippet was a dominant player even though he wasn't playing on dominant teams
26:42recognize what a challenge he was because those teams weren't on tv people did not see him play
26:46football andre tippet is one of only two players to make the pro football hall of fame after playing
26:54his entire career with the patriots so have we done him justice by putting him at number four yes no
27:02what maybe three possibly two we got a guy who was probably one of the five seven best players in
27:09league for a period of time in vince wilfork he's not on your list somebody thought that was a great
27:18idea and here you have andre tippet at number four home by january every year he's top three no
27:26question by january every year he played in the super bowl genius what what the heck
27:35oh also they didn't play super bowls in february so everybody was home in january back then idiot
27:47about that he's another one of those guys if you could slide his career back five years or so
27:51it would have been really interesting to see what they could have done with a guy like andre tippet
27:55a great play by andre tippet who's ahead of him on this list who indeed want a hint who is
28:03the tight end
28:09the number three new english patriot of all time rob bronkowski
28:19of doing things and he is so far outside of that
28:28you're gonna behave like that you better be a baller on the field but he's a baller on the field
28:35our number three put him at three it's it's right it's the right decision but it's so rock
28:42the patriot has been getting it done since he arrived in new england in 2010 he set the team's
28:48rookie touchdown record with 10 and he's continued to be a problem for opposing defenses ever since
28:56he throws to gronkowski he has a touchdown gronk's a beast he's a beast he's such an incredible athlete
29:05but yet he's always out in left field i would never think that bill belichick and rob gronkowski
29:12would be able to be in the same room together but somehow they get along it's so weird that it
29:19works
29:19so well i've never seen bill belichick laughing joking with the player i think he likes number 87
29:27i love this person because he is feels prehistoric don't do algebra around gronk i've learned
29:35he could eat the man who knows algebra 2x equals 5 no 2x equals you have been eaten by gronk
29:41gronk needs protein you can't have enough man i don't normally like having these young players on a
29:50this guy's different my god what a cat he's an impossible matchup and he throws us with kittens
29:56it's totally normal i don't think i've ever seen a name or a nickname fit a player more in the
30:04history
30:04of the nfl than gronk he's beyond even a celebrity now what's greater than the gronk spike
30:15the guy has actually made the jump from not just being like a great football player he's a verse
30:21spike was okay it wasn't that great there's been better spikes sure we'll gronk watermelons
30:30we'll gronk a pinata mustache oh candy
30:38this cult of personality crap that goes on now is foolish let's stick to the football tom brady has
30:45called rob gronkowski for a new england touchdown they have surpassed the connection of drew blood
30:50so to ben coates as the most productive quarterback the tight end combination for scores in new england
30:56history every time he makes a play you giggle like a little school girl
31:03that's kind of crazy
31:07every time he catches it and starts running touchdown patriots i am sitting there like
31:14look at that run by bronx damn i gotta stop i'm being a groupie people will say you're rushing it
31:21but no he belongs in it this is a generational player give me 21 bronx and a quarterback and i'll
31:27take my
31:30chances
31:30rob gronkowski does at tight end i don't even know how i did that i'd say he could be bumped
31:35up even higher
31:36he's distinguished himself as one of the best at his position over an extended period of time
31:40that's why you're the best dog that's why you're the best
31:43i think gronk is a good number three depending on how things shake out you might put him in the
31:48conversation as the top two but i think when you have those two guys ahead of him it's all far
31:52to break into that category number two new patriot of all time john hannah
32:00in a league of very big scary men john hannah was a man amongst men
32:09in number 73 john henna the patriots have one of the finest young guards in the game
32:14he was as good at his position as anyone has ever been the thing i always was impressed by him
32:21was a
32:21guy that big who was that nimble footed was amazing to watch him move pull out and move
32:28come off the ball and move drop back into pass coverage and be able to stay balanced it was
32:34really like a ballerina which sounds absurd when you look at the size of the man whether run blocking
32:39or pass blocking watching hannah is like watching an animated textbook on how to play the guard position
32:48he was an athlete at a position that wasn't known for athletes then or now that guy would bury you
32:55and be happy doing it
33:00the patriots of the 1970s ran ran and then when you thought they were done they might just run again
33:10the 1978 patriots ran for 3165 yards the most in nfl history that record will never be broken who
33:19do you think they're running behind they're running behind their guard they didn't have you know these
33:23individual great running backs that were putting up seven yeah they had hannah in teenage 100 yards
33:31it didn't matter who you gave the ball to you give the ball to me and i'd gain something everybody
33:34knew they were running the ball and you couldn't stop it and john hannah was the reason why you
33:38couldn't stop it the steals defensive backs used to say that he sounded like a freight train when
33:49he was pulling get out of the way because if he's coming at you you're on your back
34:01when he was pulling around the end i felt sorry for some of the people whose assignment was
34:09to take that on i just pitied him for a linebacker because he used to just
34:12bury him if you stood in front of him he was going to put you on the ground
34:17my goal was very simple i wanted to be the best offensive guard that ever played the football this
34:22fellow that you see on the cover of recent issue of sports illustrated all you proclaimed him the
34:27greatest offensive lineman in the history of the game he earned that title and uh he earned a lot
34:32of yards for the guys running behind him i would say john hannah is the best guard ever he may
34:36be the
34:36best offensive guard in nfl history but is he the second best player in patriots history that's pretty
34:42high patriots have a lot of great players i mean john hannah is a great player but two you have
34:48a guy who's
34:48their first hall of famer certainly john hannah at number two on this list makes all the sense in
34:53the world no john hannah is not number two rob gronkowski is gronk will get his turn i think he
34:58will
34:58eventually pass john hannah on this list but right now hannah red number he's a clear number two yeah
