11:07The mind records how long it takes each of the geophones to detect the reverberation.
11:14The geophones hear waves trapped within the top layer of the dune, waves the human ear can't detect.
11:22Measuring these controlled waves might help them piece together the larger mystery.
11:29Here is what their data suggests.
11:32The waves are trapped in the dry surface layer of the dune, between the air above and the firmer wet
11:40sand below.
11:42What we hear is some of that energy escaping.
11:49And the booming continues long after the initial disturbance that created it.
11:55The principle is not unlike that of a violin or cello.
12:02When you're playing an instrument, you're putting energy into the instrument through the stringing.
12:07And here what we're doing is putting energy into the dune through the shearing on the top surface as we
12:13slide down.
12:15And the booming is a single musical note.
12:19Most often G, E, or F.
12:33The thicker the sand layer, the lower the note.
12:44On the far side of Eureka Dunes, JT Reynolds turns south towards the lowest point in Death Valley.
12:54The lowest point in the USA, Badwater.
13:02Farther and farther down, JT Reynolds nears the floor of Death Valley's desert wilderness.
13:10At 85 meters below sea level, he enters the hottest zone of them all.
13:17Badwater flats.
13:20The lowest point on the continent.
13:23And the hottest place in the USA.
13:27You know, in 1913, it reached 134 here in the park, and that's a record.
13:32You've got 128, 29 that we have experienced, at least since I've been here.
13:40Surprising then, that this area is far from dry.
13:45In places, water seeps up from a giant underground reservoir.
13:51But this is no place to quench your thirst.
13:57By the time this water reaches the surface, it's undrinkable, loaded with salt.
14:05Water here is twice as salty as it is in the ocean.
14:14Rainwater runoff pools here as well.
14:17As it evaporates, it leaves salt crystals.
14:22But no matter how hot the temperature, the springs never dry up.
14:31JT is at Death Valley's deepest point.
14:37Now he's about to go even deeper, in search of that underground water.
14:45They drive nearly a hundred kilometers east from Badwater.
14:51His destination? A remote chasm in a rocky hillside.
15:00JT's here to help with a dangerous, rarely attempted cave dive, under the supervision of caving expert David Eck.
15:07Okay, get ready to lower!
15:10Some people explore in the canyons or the mountains, but there's an underground Death Valley too, which isn't as well
15:17known.
15:18And there's mysteries all throughout the park, including the caves here.
15:24Team members lower themselves through vertical shafts, deeper and deeper into the cave system.
15:31Yeah babe, you're good!
15:32They check and triple check gear before the divers submerge.
15:38Cave diving is one of the most dangerous pursuits on Earth.
15:43If anything goes wrong underwater, the chance of survival is limited.
15:57They find a crystal clear window to a world few have ever seen.
16:11No one knows the size of this system. It's at least 45 meters deep.
16:20They analyze the water. Its temperature is a steamy 33 degrees Celsius.
16:28They measure acidity, clarity, and oxygen levels.
16:36It's perfect drinking water.
16:41And there's no doubt it's part of a bigger reservoir.
16:51An underground reservoir so immense, it stretches well beyond the park's boundary.
17:00And towards Las Vegas, a city whose booming population may pose a threat.
17:13Here, officials want to tap underground supplies.
17:17The concern is that may cause the level of Death Valley's groundwater to drop.
17:25If they're going to continue to build homes and increase the populations in the desert, you're going to need water.
17:33And if this water supply itself is threatened, so too is a unique animal that lives in it.
17:40Already one of the rarest species on the planet.
17:47There's another cave entrance to Death Valley's subterranean reservoir.
17:51It's called Devil's Hole.
17:54It's fenced off and swept by surveillance cameras.
18:00This is the reason.
18:03The Devil's Hole pupfish, one of the rarest fish known to man.
18:09Today, park fish biologist Mike Bauer is leading a dive survey to find out how many are left.
18:16They're on the brink of extinction, and no one knows why.
18:21This dive requires meticulous preparations.
18:26A stray organism entering Devil's Hole could be catastrophic for the pupfish.
18:32Every piece of equipment must be sterilized.
18:39First, a precarious climb down in full dive gear to the water's edge.
18:51The dive team must find and film a fish that, fully grown, is only 25 millimeters long.
19:00It's a game of hide-and-seek.
19:03It's a game of hide-and-seek.
19:07A fathomless aquatic hole.
19:11And hopefully, a population of tiny fish.
19:20Then, an extraordinary sight.
19:24One of the rarest fish on the planet, in clear view.
19:37This is precious scientific footage.
19:43There's no doubt, the numbers are up.
19:46The dive team counts over a hundred pupfish living under the desert.
19:53The Devil's Hole pupfish has endured for nearly a thousand years in the most extreme circumstances.
20:01Now, it is not only threatened by communities looking to suck up its water.
20:06But scientists suspect global warming could write the next chapter in this epic survival story.
20:16The Devil's Hole pupfish may be our canary in a coal mine.
20:21A tiny creature that can tell us so much about how our world might look in the future.
20:30We ignore the smallest and most vulnerable among us, at our own risk.
20:35And their fate may lie our own.
20:41The National Park Service's mission is to preserve and protect for future generations.
20:48Now, will we ever learn? I guess that's the key point here.
20:58On his last journey as superintendent, J.T. Reynolds has traveled over three kilometers down towards the center of the
21:06earth.
21:08His journey has spanned nearly 40 degrees Celsius.
21:15From the snow-capped telescope peak to a valley floor that slowly splits.
21:24And beyond.
21:27To mysteries, marvels, and even miracles.
21:35J.T. knows an increase of just a few degrees could change everything.
21:44America has many wild spaces.
21:49But perhaps this place of extremes is the one where our planet speaks to us most clearly.
21:58Perhaps it's from this valley of death that we can learn the most about life.
