02:02It's a drop for me
02:09Hi everyone
02:11How's everyone feeling after that performance
02:13Are we awake or what?
02:17Now I know after that intro
02:19This needs no introduction
02:21But can we please give it up for the CEO of Kaleidoscope hair products
02:25Jessica Dupart
02:29First of all
02:31That intro?
02:33That was an intro
02:35That's what you call an introduction honey
02:37I believe in disruptive marketing
02:39I believe in shaking it up
02:40I believe in not being the norm
02:42Going against the grain
02:43So and I'm from New Orleans
02:45And that's what we do
02:46So you're home
02:47Yes
02:48I love that for you
02:49Well welcome home
02:51I'm super excited to talk to you
02:52For everybody who doesn't know me
02:53My name is Deshonda Brown
02:55I'm an associate editor at Essence and Essence Girls United
02:57And I'm super excited to talk to you today about the business of social media
03:01Because I feel like today in today's age
03:03We can't really talk about business without talking about the relationship between entrepreneurship and social media
03:10That is correct
03:12Social media played a big part in how we grew Kaleidoscope
03:16And how we grew the following
03:18And how we have so much support
03:20We're at close to a million followers now
03:22And we have a huge community
03:24And I can tell you it all started from social media
03:26Really?
03:27And I definitely want to talk to you about your social media following as well
03:30You know you have 2 million plus and counting
03:33And a lot of people think that when it comes to millions of followers
03:36One day you can just like wake up and have it
03:38Because you know you have a product that does well
03:40Or you have something that lands on TV
03:41But for you when it comes to your following
03:43Was it something that was gradual
03:45Or is it something that kind of happened for you?
03:47I started growing my social media in 2014
03:50So it's 2.5 within that time
03:52And then a lot of people think just because you have a lot of followers
03:55That automatically you're going to get a lot of sales
03:58That isn't necessarily true either
04:00That is a big myth
04:02You still have to know your marketing
04:03You still have to know your demographic
04:05You still have to know the consumer that you're trying to reach
04:07So it's layered
04:09It's definitely layered
04:11And I want to know from you as well
04:13What would you say to people who want to you know
04:16Use their platform on social media to leverage a product
04:18Or leverage a business
04:19But doesn't know exactly where to start
04:21Honestly right now is the best time
04:25Because TikTok came around
04:27And just demolished the clean polished look
04:31So people are perfectly okay with you being in your living room
04:34People are perfectly okay with things not being all the way together
04:38But you having a very um
04:41I'll say transparent
04:43Very relatable
04:45Very organic type thing that you're selling
04:47That does really well
04:49Somebody could go on TikTok and say
04:51Hey I sell hair
04:52And they you know
04:54They might have like a story where
04:56You know I bought this hair
04:57And I had this tragedy
04:58And they do a story time
05:00And that could go viral
05:01And simply boom their business
05:03So
05:04And what would you say are three things to do
05:07Or don't do to make sure that your business
05:10Really reaps the benefits of social media
05:12Well customer service is big
05:15Social media or not
05:16Customer service is big
05:17Because you can have a hundred thousand different customers
05:20And then if you don't treat them right
05:22They're not going to come back
05:23You want the customer not only to come back
05:25But to tell their friend that it was good
05:26To tell their cousin that it was good
05:28And you want that customer to come back
05:29I'd rather have each of my customers be a million dollars to me
05:33Because I've had them for a lifetime
05:35Than I have a one off
05:36I love that
05:37And also I want to talk to you about you know
05:39Your personal
05:40Because oftentimes with social media you know
05:43The relationship between the personal and the professional
05:45It gets a little blurred
05:46Or people think that they know you
05:47Based on what you put on social media
05:49But when it comes to you
05:50And sharing your personal life
05:51How do you make sure to make that decision
05:53Of what content that you want to share with your followers
05:56As opposed to what you want to keep to yourself
05:58Well I've been
06:00I guess almost see through clear with my journey
06:03So I do share a lot with my followers
06:05But the main reason why I share a lot with my followers
06:06But the main reason why I share a lot with my followers
06:08Is because I want them to know that anything is possible
06:10You know
06:11I feel like with my personal adversity
06:13With having kids starting at the age of 15
06:15Put out the house at the age of 17
06:17To have seen 60 million plus dollars
06:20At this point in time
06:21Is crazy
06:22I didn't go to college
06:23I'm not you know
06:24Like trained to know marketing
06:27I just started doing what I like to do
06:29And I understood my consumer
06:31And I paid attention to what they were asking for
06:33And I made sure to you know
06:35Make them feel important
06:37So I found a void in a space
06:42And I filled it
06:44And from there I treated my customer like they're my best friend
06:47I love that
06:48And also when it comes to customer service
06:50A lot of times we hear the term engagement
06:52But we don't exactly know what it is
06:54So for you and for Kaleidoscope
06:56What exactly does customer service and good engagement
06:58Look like on social media?
07:00I personally like for our consumers always to be responded to
07:04Within at the most 24 hours
07:06If you can do it within an hour
07:07That is great
07:08Because then it's you know
07:09They feel like they feel like they're your friend
07:11And if you try to talk to them later in the day
07:13They might not even be there anymore
07:14So I feel like there's always like a space for a sale
07:19Right then and there
07:20If you have a conversation with somebody
07:22So I think it is big
07:23Customer service is big with engagement
07:25And then when it comes to any snags that you've ever hit in social media
07:30Because you know the algorithm sometimes messes us up
07:33Sometimes we post something on social media
07:35And then it gets taken down for whatever what have you reason
07:37So what kind of snags have you hit when it comes to social media with your business
07:41And how did you overcome those hurdles?
07:43So for me I try to do a lot of planning
07:45So I do what's called batch content creation
07:48So I was doing a round of batch content creation
07:51Where I was recording 10 to 12 different videos
07:53And I save them and distribute them as the time comes
07:57But social media changed
07:59And a consumer didn't want to see a video that was longer than a minute anymore
08:03And here it is
08:04I had 10 more videos that were longer than a minute
08:07So it was learning how to reduce the amount of content
08:11Because you have to stay in front of social media
08:13Because it changes all the time
08:14Like right now people are hardly watching a minute
08:16On TikTok if you really want to go there
08:18Some 5 second videos
08:19I had a 5 second video go viral
08:20I had a
08:21I think one of the videos on my page is at 13 million views
08:24And it was with me with some goddamn slippers on
08:27That's all it was
08:28So it's just paying attention to the trends
08:30Paying attention to how things change
08:32Staying in front of everything that's happening
08:34And making sure to talk to your customer
08:36And then there's a lot of different social media platforms out there
08:39You know you mentioned TikTok
08:40There's also Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook
08:42So how do you know or how would an entrepreneur know
08:45What social media platform is best for them?
08:48To me I say try them all
08:50Try them all
08:51Try every single last one of them
08:53Because you can get on TikTok and make a video
08:55And go super viral
08:57And have 300,000 followers in two days
09:00You can get on Instagram and do the same thing
09:02But it might take a little bit more time
09:03So it just depends on which one of them you know kind of catches
09:06But I say try them all
09:08Try them all
09:09Every single last one of them
09:10If my space is still here try that too
09:13And then when it comes to demo
09:15How important is it for an entrepreneur to know their demographic when it comes to creating content?
09:21I'll give an example
09:23So a long time ago I paid to do an ad with a celebrity that was known for her sexuality you know what I'm saying?
09:35And it cost me a lot of money I can't really say I had it
09:40But when I did it I made no money back
09:43Because that particular person has very short hair and I sell hair growth products
09:47So it was a hard expensive lesson to understand that the people that I'm trying to talk to
09:52It isn't just hey go hire a celebrity
09:54It's make sure that that celebrity has the demographic of the people that you're trying to sell to
10:00So it was I think I spent 30k on a one post for somebody and didn't even make $30 back
10:09But anyway it was a hard lesson learned because I hardly had that money you know
10:13But it just let me know it can't just be oh they have a lot of followers
10:17It's more so what's the quality of the followers that they have
10:20Now if I sold something that her
10:23The people that are following her wanted maybe like sex toys or something that would have worked
10:27But them people ain't give a shit about hair growth products
10:30They did not care at all
10:32And how would you say social media has created a space where you know
10:37Entrepreneurship and building a business is glamorized
10:40As opposed to like actually showing the work behind it
10:43Girl that's like a conversation that it's like
10:47And I think a lot of people don't want to hear it right
10:49A lot of people don't want to hear that half of that shit y'all see on social media ain't real
10:53A lot of people don't want to hear that
10:55Like millions does not come in a month or a day or whatever
11:00And if you get it fast there's a higher chance that you're going to lose it fast
11:04You're supposed to learn upon the climb
11:06So if you know how to manage and budget $10,000
11:10You're going to know how to manage and budget $30
11:13If you go from $10,000 to $1,000,000 unless you have some kind of background and understanding how to manage that
11:19You're going to lose it
11:21So everybody wants to look at stuff and see how fast that it comes
11:24But I'd rather the quality foundation of building it either slow or moderately
11:30Than it being built fast and then you lose it in a year or two
11:34Because then you're going to build a lifestyle for yourself that you can't sustain because you weren't necessarily ready
11:40It's just that we are living in a microwave age where people refuse to wait for anything
11:46And sometimes it's better just to wait because along the journey you're going to learn everything that you need to know
11:51To keep your million, your $20 million, your $30 million
11:54But if you don't have those lessons when you get it, you can lose it
11:59I want to thank you so much for this amazing conversation
12:02But before we do go, please let everybody know where they can find you, how they can support you
12:06And how to get their hands on those Miracle Drops because girl, those save my hair
12:10Girl, they be flying off of shelves but our Miracle Drops is in Walmart, Sally's, Target, Walgreens, Rite Aid, CVS, Harman, Meyer
