00:00Welcome to the 2022 Avena Skate Health Startup Accelerator Wethersow Case, and yes, in partnership
00:16with Essence.
00:17My name is Dean Malcolm Gordon, and I am a Chief Revenue Officer at Essence, and we're
00:24so thrilled to think of you.
00:26So, 20 years now, it's going to be Sabrina Henry, Avena's principal scientist, and Miranda
00:34had a master, and all of these great allies for you today.
00:39I'm loving this great life, you, and I'm loving your outfit.
00:42Thank you so much.
00:44Now, from all I've been having you guys here, before we jump in, we have a very special
00:51message of someone who we should see to be here, so we're going to tune in to the messenger
00:56first.
00:57Hi, everyone.
00:58I am so incredibly sorry that I cannot be there with you in person today to celebrate
01:06this year's Avena Skate Health and celebrate our award winners.
01:11It's wonderful that Sabrina and Holly, hi guys, are with you to announce and recognize the
01:182022 of Essence's best winner and runaround.
01:20You know, I truly feel that these dynamic onto viewers are amazing, amazing businesswomen,
01:26and whole models that I look forward to seeing their businesses continue to grow.
01:33I also want to thank all of you guys and everyone who was able to attend this beautiful, amazing
01:39showcase.
01:40to be a part of Avino and Essence's commitment to skin health and equity, and I am excited
01:47to try the winning products.
01:48I hope you all continue to enjoy Essence's best.
01:51I love you guys.
01:52Bye.
01:53Bye.
01:54Bye.
01:55Wow.
01:56What a special.
01:57She is so sweet.
01:58She really is.
01:59That's awesome.
02:00So now, Polly, let's talk about it.
02:02So Avino, we really wanted to come alongside and partner with Essence.
02:06Any brother stems from the history of our brand.
02:10We're well over 70 years, but we started with two brothers who were entrepreneurs.
02:15We find that black women, our entrepreneurs, have the same spirit, right?
02:19They have great ideas.
02:20They're innovative.
02:21Look at all the hairstyles in the room and the audience.
02:24Yes.
02:25Yeah.
02:26But it's in that same breath that we wanted to be able to provide scores and open doors
02:31for black women in the business.
02:34Yes.
02:35Yes.
02:36But you know what?
02:37Many of us do not look on them.
02:39I know.
02:40Many black female entrepreneurs have such amazing ideas that we get less than 1% of
02:47all these people.
02:49Less than 1%.
02:50And we will not be going up anymore.
02:53That's right.
02:54So with this, Avino Skinfile Startup Accelerator is doing just that.
02:58It's a long-standing partnership with Essence.
03:01We want to be able to provide educational resources, materials, money.
03:06We're talking about money.
03:08Because, as Colleen already mentioned, we know that's what's going to be able to fuel
03:12these businesses in the skincare industry.
03:16And so with that, we're going to be awarding our Accelerator winner $100,000.
03:22I'm going to repeat it again.
03:24$100,000 at Essence Fest 2022.
03:28That's right.
03:29So in the main addition to that, let's talk about that mentorship.
03:33They're also going to get mentorship from our Avino experts as well as their synthesis.
03:38So these brands are about to be a full force right here in the marketplace, okay?
03:43Absolutely.
03:44And I was honored and humbled to be a judge for this year's Accelerator Skincare Public Care
03:52in the mission.
03:54And these women were so incredibly inspiring.
03:57We got to be able to find finalists and care all of them for their businesses.
04:02And we're talking about business shaping money.
04:05$100,000.
04:06We can't just go plug it off the tree, although we've been trying to come with.
04:09Buddies and adults with a mentorship, it's going to be a lot of change.
04:12Okay?
04:13We're giving them access.
04:14And they may not generally gain access to opening doors, but just with this money and expertise,
04:20it's going to go a long way.
04:21Absolutely.
04:22So Polly.
04:23There's nothing more powerful than women that meet each other as women.
04:28And when you look toward women and tower other women, and that's what we hear today.
04:33Yep.
04:34And so with that, Polly, do you think that we're ready?
04:38I think we are, Sabrina.
04:39Okay.
04:40Our winner and runner-up of this year's competition are here with us today.
04:44Isn't that right?
04:45They are.
04:46They are.
04:47So now with this, we're going to be announcing our winner.
04:52And before our winner, we, you know, the choices were so hard, as Polly mentioned.
04:56There were over three times the number of applicants this year than they were last year,
05:01which that means that we're sparking innovation in the marketplace, which is awesome, right?
05:05So the ideas are coming through.
05:07So we couldn't only just give one prize away Polly.
05:11We also have a runner-up as well.
05:13Yes, right?
05:14Okay.
05:15So with this, what I'm going to do now is we're going to announce our, I think we're
05:20ready to announce our runner-up first, right?
05:23And we're awarding our runner-up $50,000.
05:26Okay?
05:27$50,000.
05:28Yes.
05:29It deserves a round of well over prize.
05:32And with that, they also gained the same mentorship from Avino in essence.
05:36Yes.
05:37Yes.
05:38Yes.
05:39Which is excellent.
05:40So now, without further ado, please give a warm welcome.
05:43I want to hear it loud in here for our runner-up who's coming on stage, Ms. Ann Beal.
05:48Hi, my name is Dr. Ann Beal.
05:53I'm a physician and the founder of Absolute Joy.
05:55We are a clean beauty skincare line for people with melanin-rich skin over the age of 35.
06:01I started Absolute Joy because frankly, I was tired of trying to find products that worked
06:05for me.
06:06As I was getting more mature and entering into my thirties, forties, fifties, and beyond,
06:11I knew that the anti-aging products that were on the market really weren't addressing my needs.
06:15That's because a lot of the products out there focus on fine lines and wrinkles.
06:19However, people with melanin-rich skin show age first, not with fine lines and wrinkles,
06:23but with dark marks and hyperpigmentation.
06:25In fact, market research has shown that in the UK, over 70% of women of color say products
06:31currently on the market just don't work for them.
06:33And here in the United States, it's 63% of women.
06:37The other reason why I created Absolute Joy was to help people who have sensitive skin.
06:41I know that over 60% of black women say that they have sensitive skin as compared to only
06:4630% of the general population.
06:48And from my own clinical practice, as well as even from my own children, many of us have
06:52skin sensitivities that really need to be addressed by a different approach to skincare.
06:57So my approach to creating Absolute Joy was to combine the types of ingredients that I
07:02know are effective and very helpful for anti-aging such as retinol, but then to also use natural
07:08ingredients that help to calm and soothe the skin.
07:10So we use, for example, sunflower oil because it helps to promote ceramide growth within the
07:15skin, which helps with hydration.
07:17I use Moringa oil because it is very high in antioxidants, which is excellent for the
07:22skin.
07:23I use oat in our toner because as you know, it is excellent for calming the skin and
07:27there's good scientific evidence for its efficacy.
07:30I know as a clinician, I have recommended Aveeno products many times over the years, but
07:35specifically the focus on health disparities and the focus on disparities in skin sensitivities
07:40and the recognition that communities of color and consumers and patients of color are more
07:45likely to have these issues is really what makes, I think, Absolute Joy and Aveeno very well aligned.
07:51All righty, let's open it up.
07:52Where are you?
07:53Where are you?
07:54Here you go.
07:55Here you go.
07:56Here you go.
07:57Here you go.
07:58You go.
07:59Here you go.
08:02Here you go.
08:03Here you go.
08:07You want to have fun.
08:08Here you go.
08:10And how are you using those grants for your business?
08:12Well, I'm using a home physician and a product developer and so that can be on my
08:16head.
08:17And so what I really need is a lot of assistance with things like marketing and really learning how to tell the brand story.
08:23Because I know that it's not just about the science, but it's really about telling the story with the bodyguard.
08:28So that's the career where I'm really going to be focused on things that are being sustainable.
08:33All right. Thank you so much, Ann. And I can't wait to tell your friends.
08:37And this is my fellow product developer over here.
08:40So now, without further ado, is everybody ready for me to announce the 2022 Alino Startup Skits Out winner?
08:49All right. So now, coming to the stage is Ms. Ariel Brown, founder of Bees Bayou.
08:59Hey, everybody. It is Ms. Annabita. My name is Ariel Brown. I'm here in New Orleans.
09:04And I'm the founder and creator of Bees Bayou Skincare.
09:07My name is Dr. My grandmother, Bees Bayou Skincare. We have microbiome fully from Macrobley.
09:12Now, when I'm talking about the microbiome, I'm just referring to the diverse community of microbes
09:16that live in and flood our bodies, like bacteria, fungi, yeast, and viruses.
09:21And when I'm talking about relief, I'm referring to relief.
09:24And it's my prone scalp and skin.
09:26For people like myself, see, I was diagnosed with some more arthritis about 20 years ago.
09:31And it is a chronic scalp condition. Personally, for me, it affects my scalp.
09:36It's a chronic condition around the sebaceous glands.
09:39It's really linked to inflammation in the body.
09:41And it shows itself as flakes, irritation, redness, like the pigmentation, sometimes even shedding and mops of the hair.
09:49Huge flakes, incessant flakes.
09:52Sometimes the scalp is oily. Sometimes it's dry.
09:54It's really hard to control it. It's balanced.
09:56And what happens for me personally and for many of our customers that can't wear their hair south the way they really want to
10:02because they're afraid of what's going to show on their scalp or they're going to have to wash their hair so frequently.
10:08And I have tried so many different types of scalp products that I just was really frustrated.
10:1390% of African Americans have deandruff, which is a type of eczema.
10:18And 50% of people worldwide have deandruff all linked to inflammation in our bodies.
10:23And even despite diet changes or not putting in relaxers, we have a variety of customers from different backgrounds who suffer from this exact same thing.
10:32So in terms of research, we found that probiotic extracts are really amazing for the skin.
10:38So we have our best-selling scalp solution, our amazing face serum, which is lightweight.
10:44We have our prebiotic scalp oil and just for the least shampoo and conditioner that people love.
10:50They're so good. They're so so good.
10:51I'm really excited because our products are very unique and special, and our brand is inclusive.
10:57Our values are integrity, empathy, and audacity.
11:00Thank you so much. Peace.
11:02Woo-hoo!
11:04Hello, Ariel!
11:06All right!
11:07Come around, come around!
11:11So here it is.
11:13So tell us.
11:14How are you feeling?
11:16I feel amazing.
11:18I'm still in shock with a place, and I feel divinely inspired.
11:25All right!
11:26I love it.
11:27So now, with the money and also the mentorship, what is your first order of business?
11:32Oh, man.
11:33That's a long list of first order of business.
11:35I can tell you that, but it's been an amazing journey at this point.
11:39Our customers really have been continuing to shop, and I need some inventory, and I need
11:44to purchase, and I want to also get that inventory certified, dermatologist tested, have
11:50a proper marketing channel to influencers to get it out there.
11:55So please, I'm looking for influencers and people, girl people like you and me to put it
12:01out there and hope other people will so please reach out.
12:03I am a normal person.
12:05I would love to hear from you.
12:06Wow!
12:06I'm so awesome!
12:08I hope you guys are the golden areas that are out there.
12:10Yes.
12:12Thank you, man, Ariel.
12:15Massive, massive congratulations.
12:18All the fairbations were so inspiring.
12:20I can't wait to see your products in action.
12:22It's on shelves.
12:25And thank you for creating skin and scalp products for my favorite.
12:29It's a lot more times.
12:31Thank you, you can hear skins.
12:33We appreciate you so much.
12:35You know, from Canada, hi, y'all, everyone.
12:37Hi, y'all, everyone.
12:40And of course, thank you to my friend Sabrina, my new friend.
12:44Sabrina, thank you so much for this special announcement today.
12:48Oh, yeah, no problem.
12:49And thank you to everybody here who's been with us.
12:52And Paulie, a special thank you for you for being our host today.
12:56So, for me personally, it's an absolute highlight to come to us as best, to come to the beauty carnival,
13:01to be amongst, you know, we're here with our winners, just to understand that in our industry,
13:07creating products for black women for the different skin conditions and hair conditions we have,
13:12it's important, y'all.
13:13I don't know who he has, but it really is.
13:16So, this is one of the staple events that I look forward to every year.
13:19And more innovative products to come.
13:21You two are setting the mark high.
13:24Okay?
13:25All right?
13:26So, now, everybody who's attended this, tell a friend, text a friend, call a friend.
13:32We have plenty of friends over there, too.
13:34Support.
13:35Support.
13:36We have to support our community.
13:38We have to support the products.
13:39So, now, you know, I hope you see that the veto against us, we're truly committed to, you know,
13:46closing the gap and really closing the gap with skin equity.
13:50The race.
13:50It's a race.
13:51And we're making sure that we're at the front and center.
13:54That's all right?
13:54And we hope that you join the journey and the space with us.
13:57So, now, this is fast as obviously in full gear.
14:00So, please, head out.
14:02Have fun.
14:03Enjoy the rest of the weekend.
14:04And thank you so much for being here.
14:05We love you all.
