00:00Hi! Hello, Essence! Hello, Essence! Hello, Essence! I am so honored to be here on the
00:23heels of my second Emmy win last week because of you! The Tamron Hall Show has been renewed not for just one season, two back-to-back seasons, so thank you so much! It is such an honor to be here. We launched the show in 2019, and now we're back celebrating all of the success of the show, and it was so important
00:53for me to come back to Essence Fest and to thank each and every one of you for believing that a black girl from Luling, Texas, born from a single mom whose grandfather had a second-grade education, could make her living with words. Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart,
01:19for showing ABC Disney that you would support a daytime show where we actually talked about something and not talked about people! That we celebrated the richness of who we are as unapologetic women who are mothers, who are sisters, who are cousins, who are friends, who are love, and who celebrate joy!
01:47So thank you Essence! Thank you to everybody who has supported the show! So we're gonna do something a little bit different this time. Hi! Hey handsome! Hey beautiful! Hi!
02:02I wanted a chance to be able to talk to you and for you to be able to ask us anything you've wanted about the show over its four seasons. So I'm gonna sit right here, you call all your friends who are at the other booths and doing all kinds of things and tell them, yes I did show up, I've kept my word, I wore my Oscar de la Renta and my heels!
02:26We brought the looks and we brought the love! And I want to introduce you to someone so special, my executive producer of my show, because when I launched this show, it was important to me to have a team of women, of people who look like me, who understands me, who understands us.
02:48Because it's not enough for me to be the first, because if I'm the only one of us in the building, it doesn't change anything.
02:55So I want you to meet my award-winning executive producer, Kiana Burns! Come on out, Kiana!
03:05Now this is Kiana's first time attending Essence Festival, so y'all gotta give it up to my black female award-winning executive producer of the Tamron Hall Show!
03:17Have a seat beautiful! So, how are, y'all are, I feel like y'all are so far away, come in closer please!
03:27I know!
03:28I feel like it's church and you don't want to talk to us!
03:30We are here to talk about our show in the season four, and people keep asking me everywhere we go, why do we think the show is now the number one show in the top 50 cities?
03:45Oh!
03:46No, ma'am!
03:48I'm right here with a microphone if you want to say it in.
03:50Right here in the audience, the one and only, Jennifer LeWitt!
03:56All right, kid, I was just saying hello, little girl!
04:00Listen!
04:01Ain't nobody told you to call me out with your cute self, hi!
04:05Jennifer LeWitt!
04:06No pictures, no, no, no, COVID y'all, uh-uh, don't come near me!
04:09Yes, don't come!
04:10I'll beat the shit out of you, don't come near me!
04:13I will kill your ass, don't roll up!
04:15Let me tell you!
04:17Y'all give my friends a room!
04:18Yeah, that COVID shit, don't come near me!
04:20Don't give-
04:21Yeah, fuck a picture!
04:23Kiss my black ass!
04:24Listen!
04:25How y'all doing?
04:26We doing great!
04:27Don't start no shit, it won't be nothing!
04:29Don't start no shit, it won't be nothing!
04:31Jennifer Lewis, one of the best and highest rated guests on the Tamron Show!
04:36I love you, I love you!
04:38You-
04:39I wanted to hug you after that interview, but I was on virtual, baby!
04:44You were wonderful, you were wonderful, you were generous, you were respectful, you did
04:50your homework, I didn't have to worry about nothing you said, so thank you!
04:55Y'all give Tamron a big hair, because honey, she took care of me!
05:01The-
05:02The-
05:03The-
05:04And thank you for your service!
05:05I'm sitting here shaking, because Jennifer is an icon in our industry, she has not only
05:11been a star, she's raised stars!
05:14And when you came on my show and said, I'm supposed to be doing this, it mattered to me!
05:20Yeah!
05:21So I thank you from the bottom of my heart!
05:23Yeah!
05:24I'll tell you guys, you know I had a dream to be a star, because I wanted my mother to
05:29love me, that's why!
05:30Now listen to me, I conquered that dream!
05:35Now my dream is to take care of the next generation!
05:40You!
05:41You!
05:42And Tamron Hall is one of ours, and she's one of the best, and you know what she does?
05:50She shoots from the hip!
05:52She's gonna tell you the truth!
05:54You understand, there are some people I could tell you that have talk shows, I wish you didn't
05:59listen to them!
06:00This one, Tamron Hall, is the one!
06:03Y'all give her a hand!
06:04I'm gone, girl, before I get lost!
06:06I love you!
06:07Jennifer Lewis!
06:08I love you!
06:09Oh my God!
06:10Okay, I did not know that was gonna happen!
06:13And now I'm about to ugly cry my flutter lashes off!
06:17Any questions?
06:18Any questions?
06:19Thank you!
06:20Oh my God!
06:21Jennifer Lewis, thank you!
06:22Now she said don't take no...
06:23Love you so much!
06:24Thank you!
06:25Thank you so, so much!
06:26You have a question?
06:27I know!
06:28We've been...
06:29We have somebody in the audience with a microphone.
06:31We're gonna take pictures and selfies and videos and TikToks.
06:36I've built in time for all of you, but I wanted you to have a chance right here.
06:42If you have any questions, if you have children that wanna bust in this business, close mouths,
06:47don't get fed.
06:48So our microphone is right there.
06:51Anybody with any questions?
06:52I think right here.
06:53Go ahead!
06:54Yes ma'am!
06:55Question?
06:56Just a statement!
06:57I don't care!
06:58I just love you and I won't name a guest, but I see sometimes you question the answers.
07:04Does it take practice?
07:06I know that you do your research before you see the person, but how is it that you...
07:13Yeah, keep so calm and...
07:15You know what?
07:16It's, first of all, Kiana Burns is my executive producer and what we do is, and I think this
07:21doesn't happen enough, you gotta give people space and grace.
07:25We all make mistakes and a lot of our guests on our show talking about real life grown folks
07:31stuff.
07:32And I always wanna make y'all proud.
07:35I wanna make my mom proud.
07:37I don't want anybody to watch our show and say, Tamron Hall was unfair.
07:42Tamron Hall was messy.
07:44Tamron Hall didn't give them a chance.
07:46And so for me, I'm also very curious.
07:49I'm a little nosy too.
07:50But, you know, we talk about all the time, we have people to come on and we had a couple
07:54of stars and I knew about their personal life, right?
07:57I'm not gonna ask you to embarrass you anything.
08:01I want you to share your story with people.
08:05So I just go in and I treat people the way I wanna be treated.
08:08That's how I was raised and that's why you all watch the show because we're treating you
08:12like family.
08:13We call it the Tam Fam and that's real.
08:16That is so real.
08:17But I think also, I think also it's her listening to the guests because a lot of hosts will ask
08:24a question and then move on and they're not listening, but she is.
08:28And so I think that are, that's the follow up to the questions.
08:32And I have good people.
08:33Listen, Kiana Burns is from ABC news.
08:36She worked with me at MSNBC.
08:39She's produced some of the best TV that y'all didn't even know she was producing.
08:43And it was important for me as a black woman to stand with another strong woman to do this show.
08:50And when I got a chance to bring her back into the fold, I was like, oh, season three,
08:55we about to get this Emmy.
08:56I knew that.
08:57Because you know what?
08:59My dad used to say, we all know the adage, birds of a feather flock together.
09:04Queens adjust other Queens crowns.
09:06And she is always keeping me straight.
09:08And that's why the show is what it is.
09:10That's why it's what it is.
09:13Anybody else got any questions?
09:15We've got a few right here.
09:17Yes, ma'am.
09:18Yes, ma'am.
09:19Hi.
09:20You get your Tamron Hall moment right now.
09:22Hi, Tamron Hall.
09:23I watch the show, by the way.
09:24I love you.
09:26It's not even about your show.
09:27Are you hiring?
09:28Am I hiring?
09:29Yeah.
09:30We'll take the resume.
09:33Hiring for what?
09:34Listen, we will take the resume.
09:36What do you do?
09:37Everything.
09:38You do everything.
09:39I do everything.
09:40You're a jack of all trades, but what have you mastered?
09:42Everything.
09:43Everything.
09:44Everything.
09:45Everything.
09:46You got it.
09:47We got specific openers.
09:48You know that Liam Neeson?
09:49I need people with a particular set of skills.
09:52Can you write?
09:53Yes.
09:54You can write.
09:55I've been writing since I was eight.
09:56You've been writing since you were eight.
09:57Okay.
09:58We will take the resume.
09:59Okay.
10:00You go to my.
10:01You DM me your.
10:02What's your name?
10:03Lashant.
10:04Lashant.
10:05You DM me your resume.
10:06We will call you.
10:07I promise you that.
10:08Absolutely.
10:09Well, thank you.
10:10I never had somebody apply.
10:13Okay.
10:14We have Crystal with a question.
10:16Hi, Crystal.
10:17Hi.
10:18Hi.
10:19Yes, ma'am.
10:20What's up?
10:23First, congratulations on everything.
10:26I was just telling my best friend that I love that you lead with empathy and that you're
10:31trying to really tell stories.
10:32And you said it really well.
10:33And so my question to you is, as someone who wants to break into more of like moderating
10:39channels, interviewing and things like that, we're in such a society or a lot of noise
10:44where what's viral and what is messy or what is getting numbers is what's being seen.
10:50So trying to be a person who's putting positivity into the world or telling genuine stories from
10:55a place of love.
10:56What's your advice for someone like me that's trying to break through that?
10:59Listen, you would think being positive was the easier route, but it's challenging.
11:04I think, again, what's critical is knowing who you are.
11:07I'm now 51, 52.
11:10I didn't even know always who I was, right?
11:15But then when I came to Essence in 2019 and we started talking about this show and the
11:20energy that being at Essence Festival then gave me, I know I'm a child of God and I know
11:28I'm meant to be doing this.
11:30So when people try to direct you in other spaces, you can't be moved.
11:34And sometimes it hurts some people that I was like, no, we're not doing that.
11:39I'm not doing hot topics.
11:40That's not me.
11:41It's okay for other people.
11:42Don't get me wrong.
11:43It's not me.
11:44And if when you stand strong in your faith and stand strong in who you are, you'll be
11:50surprised how they will move to you.
11:53It'll be changing.
11:54But I love that you're getting into the panels.
11:56Don't be discouraged.
11:58Don't.
11:59I think this is proof that you can be who you are.
12:02You can be nice.
12:03You can be intelligent and you don't have to go that other route.
12:07I think this is proof.
12:09So stay strong.
12:10And listen, the odds were against us.
12:12They said, even though we had crowds of people at Essence Festival saying we're going
12:16to watch the show, they didn't think it.
12:18And then when the show premiered to the highest ratings of a new talk show, people were blown
12:23away.
12:24And now the response, we got picked up for two new seasons.
12:28But I think the key to anything is I could tell you every exact step that I did and it
12:32would change out differently.
12:33But you have got to be strong in your core.
12:38People will try to shake you.
12:40They will try to make you doubt yourself.
12:42I go, Dolly Parton said the two things she does before a show is pee and pray.
12:47I pray and pray.
12:49And that's what you have to do.
12:50And just keep writing it down.
12:51I write down everything.
12:52I journal.
12:53I script.
12:54I just finished my first novel.
12:56Just stay strong and steadfast in who you are.
12:59And people say you can't do it because they haven't.
13:02And that's a fact.
13:03People say you can't do it because they haven't.
13:07But you can.
13:08Thank you so, so much.
13:09Thank you so much.
13:10Thank you, ladies.
13:11We have about four more people that are ready.
13:13We have Dr. Creative next.
13:15Hi.
13:16Hello.
13:17I'm sorry, doctor.
13:22They let my cousin in.
13:24She on parole and you know what I'm saying.
13:27I'm so sorry, doctor.
13:29How are you?
13:30It's all right.
13:31How are you doing?
13:32My name is Dr. Creative.
13:33Hi, Dr. Creative.
13:34Congratulations on the new season.
13:36I'm so excited for it.
13:37I'm a big fan.
13:39This question is for Kiana.
13:40Oh, great.
13:41Listen, you're a producer.
13:42You're doing a great job.
13:43The things are so nice.
13:44What do you have in store for next season?
13:46Next season?
13:47Okay.
13:48The last question, so I won't really forget.
13:51How would I contact you?
13:52Because I also manage an artist called Miss Chalet, who's a Beyonce personator.
13:56I'd love to see her on the show.
13:57So, two questions.
13:58This season is going to be exciting.
14:01We have a lot planned.
14:02We want to continue to do what we do, which is great conversations with great people.
14:08We want to have real, authentic conversations, entertain, feel something when you watch the
14:14show, and contacting me, Ivy, who had the microphone, she can get you my information.
14:23Oh, thank you.
14:24And that's what we do.
14:25Our show is very inclusive.
14:27We've had, I believe, more LGBTQ plus I guests than any other show in celebration, not just
14:34of one dimensional.
14:36We've had creatives from all spaces, and it's important to us.
14:40We have the most diverse audience in all of daytime, and we have the most diverse guest bookings.
14:48Not just to talk about being black, talking about being a mom, talking about being a small
14:53business owner, all of those things, because we're not one dimensional.
14:58And our show every day shows that.
15:01Ma'am, hi.
15:02Look how cute you're looking.
15:04You didn't just get your hair color to not be seen.
15:07She's been waiting patiently.
15:08Hi.
15:09Cadillac Cat.
15:10Hey, Cadillac Cat.
15:11You say talk about it.
15:13Did I steal that from you?
15:14Talk about it with Cadillac Cat.
15:16Oh, okay.
15:17My name is Cadillac Cat, and I want to congratulate you on all that you've accomplished.
15:21And you are a role model.
15:23I've been watching you since you started your career, and I'm so blessed and honored
15:26to have you here and pouring information into us.
15:29I, too, am starting a new career.
15:31Yeah.
15:32I'm an accountant by education, HBCU.
15:34Hey.
15:35All right.
15:36Where'd you go?
15:37I went to South Carolina State University.
15:39Okay.
15:40We're the MEAC champions, so we beat Deion Sanders' team.
15:44Uh-oh.
15:45Don't y'all forget that.
15:46I don't even want to get in that.
15:47I just recently started a new career.
15:49Yes.
15:50And I would love for you to pour into me.
15:52I'm in radio now.
15:53My show is Talk About It with Cadillac Cat, and what I do is I am motivated, encouraged,
15:58inspired.
15:59I don't stray away from any difficult topics.
16:01Okay.
16:02My major was not speech pathology and audiology.
16:03When did you take your show?
16:05My show is every Saturday, 10 a.m. to 12 noon Eastern on JPRG Radio.
16:10In what town?
16:11It's global.
16:12I have a global audience.
16:13All right.
16:14Cadillac Cat.
16:15It's Atlanta.
16:16It's based out of Atlanta.
16:17Okay.
16:18Cadillac Cat.
16:19Close mouths.
16:20Don't be fake.
16:21That's right.
16:22Can I be a guest on your show?
16:23Oh, absolutely.
16:24Thank you so much.
16:25My publicist right there, Vanessa Anderson.
16:26Woo!
16:27I am agreeing to be a guest on your show.
16:30Don't ask me nothing about my husband.
16:33We have two more people.
16:35One more fellow.
16:36I am booked on the Cadillac Cat show.
16:39How long is this interview, Cadillac Cat?
16:41It's for however long you want to talk to me, sis.
16:45Whatever you want to do.
16:46It's on Saturday.
16:47I don't, and she knows I don't like anything more than 15 minutes.
16:50That's good.
16:51Even though I do an hour long show.
16:52I'm going to, 30 minutes, me and you.
16:54Okay.
16:55Talking woman to woman.
16:56I'm supporting you.
16:57I'm going to be on the Cadillac Cat show.
16:59Y'all going to listen.
17:00Woo!
17:03Yes.
17:04Hello.
17:05Hello, Cameron.
17:06Hello.
17:07Dr. Hodges and Dr. Ferguson.
17:08First of all, I just want to...
17:09Ah!
17:10So, first of all, they just introduced themselves.
17:13These are the two most popular faces in reality television.
17:20Critter Fixers.
17:21Two black men who are veterinarians, caring for,
17:26and, again, one of the most highly rated shows on the Tamron Hall series this season.
17:32Definitely.
17:33We just want to thank you for having us on, and everything that you're saying is definitely true.
17:36You allowed us to have the platform to, you know, representation matters.
17:40You know, we're in this field that is not very diverse, and we're trying to do our thing,
17:44and you allowed us to be able to do that, and we want to thank you for that.
17:47Thank you so much for being guests on the show.
17:50One of the highest rated shows.
17:54One of you, after we talked, we did win that Critics' Choice Award.
17:57You won the Critics' Choice Award?
17:59Yes.
18:00Yes.
18:01Best animal show, veterinary show, and...
18:02I mean, wait a minute.
18:03Let's pause here.
18:04The best animal veterinary show on television.
18:07Yes.
18:08Two black men who are veterinarians and won the Critics' Choice Award.
18:13Listen, I don't want to get on my soapbox, but we often talk about where are we on TV or what,
18:18and then we get on Twitter and we complain, but there are shows like this that we are embracing and following.
18:25So thank you guys so much, and thank you for supporting their show and our show.
18:30But I will tell you, I'm still salty because they brought a rat on my show.
18:33A rat named Mr. Popcorn or something.
18:38So thank you.
18:39We love you guys so, so much.
18:42So that's our show, and in addition to our show, we love fashion, as you all know.
18:48And I think we have a little sneak peek.
18:51Oh, no, we don't.
18:52Oh, we didn't get it.
18:53No, no.
18:54We have one more thing.
18:55Oh, we have one more thing.
18:56Go ahead.
18:57What do we have?
18:58One more gal.
18:59She's been waiting.
19:02Go ahead.
19:03Yes, ma'am.
19:05Hi, I'm Kennedy, and I'm a rising senior in high school, and I do want to go in the journalism,
19:11mass communications route, but I don't really know a lot of people that's going to go that route,
19:16and I just want to know, do you have any tips or anything you're willing to share with me to help me through this path?
19:24How old are you?
19:25I'm 17.
19:26You're in high school?
19:27Yes.
19:28She's going to give you my personal email.
19:30Okay.
19:31Don't share it with anybody.
19:32I'm going to come after you at your high school graduation.
19:34I will mentor you if you are ready to receive it.
19:37This is her mom.
19:38She's a witness.
19:39Do you mind?
19:40Then I'm going to be your personal mentor, and she's going to give you my email,
19:45and we're going to start this journey if you really want this.
19:48Okay.
19:49I would actually love that.
19:50Thank you so much.
19:51You're welcome.
19:52You're very welcome.
19:53Tamron Hall, everybody, and Kiana Burns.
19:56You're right?
19:58Okay.
