00:00For the second year in a row, Essence and Ulta Beauty have teamed up to give sick and inspiring young teens the opportunity to jump to the beauty beach.
00:13Girls united beautiful possibilities in a special mentorship program that follows the team's journeys as they co-create a capsule collection to be sold in Ulta Beauty stores early next year.
00:23Welcome to the new cast, plus Chelsea Worthy, all here to discuss all things black romance.
00:28And the life of being young black beauty entrepreneurs.
00:31Take it away, Chelsea.
00:32Hello, everyone, and welcome to young black embossed up inside the life of Gen Z beauty entrepreneurs.
00:39My name is Chelsea Worthy, and I'm a beauty influencer and creator of the trap toil style of beauty tutorials.
00:45I am so excited to be here with the cast members from season two of Girls United Beautiful Possibilities, our web series.
00:52Together with Ulta Beauty, Essence has given six young bosses the opportunity to be mentored by industry leaders and co-create their very own beauty collection to be sold in Ulta Beauty and on Ulta.com next year.
01:05Each of these young women are one of a kind, but one thing they all have in common, beauty and brain.
01:10They're here to give us the tea on what it's like to launch their very own makeup line.
01:14So let's meet our panelists. Joining us today is Jatara Ellis.
01:18She's a student at Clark Atlanta University, currently a rapper, YouTuber and model.
01:24She hopes to pursue a career in the entertainment industry.
01:27And next up, we have Nellie Gasana, a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.
01:33She's pursuing her college education, freelance opportunities and internships all while planning to launch her own cosmetics line.
01:40Next, please welcome Fanta Caba, a public health major at Michigan State University with a minor in communications.
01:47Next, we're joined by Jacqueline Means. Jacqueline is a student at the University of Delaware.
01:52She's also a founder of the Wilmington Urban STEM Initiative.
01:56Next, we meet Kehlani Sparks from Richmond, VA.
02:00Kehlani is in her senior year of high school.
02:03She hopes to become a pediatrician or the founder of her own makeup brand.
02:06Last, but certainly not least, we welcome Val Keese, a student at Valencia College.
02:12And Val Keese hopes to pursue a career in marketing after college.
02:15So let's jump into some questions.
02:17Share two things that make you unique and how you were able to pull from that individuality to contribute to that group.
02:24Going into Essence GU, having all of these beautiful ladies to work with me.
02:29It was just amazing.
02:30And I just brought that positive energy uplifting everybody.
02:33And we just riding and rocking and rolling with it.
02:36And I hope you guys love what we came up with.
02:38Hey Kehlani, so what's your take on it?
02:41My experiences, like just things I've been through, things that I've learned, like my story I've been through a lot.
02:49And so I feel like I can contribute that because I can help people, you know, handle what they're going through.
02:55And I can understand.
02:56And it's just, it helps me connect with everyone better.
02:59So how do you think having varied interests and bringing your full selves to beautiful possibilities kind of added to the creation of your beauty collection?
03:07We're all women of like different walks of life.
03:11And for me, it really brings representation.
03:13And like me being like a black Muslim woman, it's just like, it's amazing that I was part of this opportunity because it's like when I was growing up, I really never had that representation.
03:22Well, I think that our uniqueness is what really made the collection pop.
03:28Because we all have, you know, amazing ideas and amazing things to like show.
03:34It's for everybody.
03:35Jacqueline, you even founded a STEM program for young girls in your hometown.
03:40So what's one thing you learned or a piece of advice you received from Beautiful Possibility mentors that made you think about being a better leader?
03:49One thing that I've learned from both the mentors and my peers is that the power of collaborative effort and teamwork is so great.
03:57I just graduated from a military academy and I was very high up in the ranks.
04:01So I, for the four years, I'm very used to things being done my way and everyone doing what I say.
04:06So, of course, I came to, you know, every single meeting with an idea that I had.
04:12And I was like, this is how it's going to go, you know, and I was very determined to have that be how it went.
04:17And I would be like, you know, let me sit back and listen to what these other five intelligent, smart, amazing young women have to say.
04:23Reminding myself that teamwork is much better than me working individually.
04:27Just adding on to what you said, like part of being a leader is just like sometimes that means like maybe you stepping back and giving other people that opportunity, you know?
04:35And then that it's like a domino effect. You give that person that opportunity.
04:39They like, you know, all the confidence and all that, they step back and they give that to someone else.
04:43Not many people can say that they've created a makeup line that's sold in all to beauty stores.
04:47I feel like that is quite the break into the beauty industry.
04:51And Nelly, you have plans to launch your own cosmetics line.
04:55And Balkees, you want to be a digital marketing manager.
04:58So tell me more about your future plans.
05:00Being part of this program has definitely helped me take more initiative when it comes to creating my own beauty brand.
05:09When I first came into this program, I had the idea, I had the plans, but I had no idea where to start.
05:15And just learning from all the mentors in this program and these beautiful girls right here and being able to collaborate with people and see how they like they view beauty has definitely helped me a lot because I have my own perception of beauty.
05:30Like I'm more into, you know, the bold colors and just like very editorial stuff, but that I have like girls here who are like really into, you know, the natural look, the clean beauty aspect, the natural ingredients and stuff.
05:45And I've just learned so much, like I've taken in so much information and the more and more I take in information, the more excited I become.
05:52So that's definitely what I'm going to be working on for the rest of this year.
05:56What surprised you about the process that you'll keep in mind when you're out there making your own boss moves?
06:01The production, like the process of production, like what goes into making a collection.
06:06Like, for example, like going to the legal team to appreciate approvals because, you know, you got to be careful with that, like what's already in the market.
06:14And then also like learning about the market and like what's your ideal consumer and like who you want to sell everything to.
06:19That really meant a lot to me because I want to go into marketing and I want to be in digital marketing.
06:24And so really the whole experience of this program and learning about the process of production, which I didn't know of before, was really meaningful to me.
06:34I totally agree with what that said.
06:37I was surprised at like how long the process was because I always thought that a brand as big as Ulta, like it would just be you have the idea, you execute it.
06:45And I was like, wait, this takes time, like so many soldiers, there's many people involved.
06:51It's not just like a straight road.
06:53So that was very helpful for me to learn as well.
06:56So again, incredible answers.
07:00And I like you said, just going off what you just mentioned, the process is super long, but I definitely feel like the outcome was more than worth it because you guys all grew close to each other.
07:10And throughout this entire campaign, I feel like you've learned so much about yourselves.
07:15And I think that that was really the main point, the purpose of bringing all you guys together, right?
07:20Definitely.
07:21So before we wrap, I would like to thank each and every one of you for having this conversation with me.
07:27And you guys are all so inspiring.
07:30And honestly, I cannot wait to see what you do next.
07:33I know that you're headed for great, greater and bigger things than this.
07:37So before we wrap for everyone out there who is watching, be sure to shop the collection and catch the new cast on season two of Girls United Beautiful Possibilities dropping next year.
07:48So here's a little sneak peek of what's to come.
07:50Three, two, one, action.
