00:00On this episode of Lost Survivors...
00:03What is this weird place?
00:06A prison.
00:07Bones?
00:09It's in!
00:12Hold on.
00:15Whoa, wait, wait.
00:16Snake.
00:17Maybe I'm starving.
00:18Rats too, baby.
00:19No.
00:20Rats too.
00:21Look, it's got an R!
00:22Look at my rat's arm!
00:24This is my warrior husband, Michael.
00:27Woo!
00:28And this is my journalist wife, Ruth.
00:30We're lost somewhere on Earth, together.
00:33Time to go to work!
00:36Our mission? Get back alive.
00:37Hold it!
00:39That's a shot.
00:40But first, we need to find out where the heck we are.
00:42We gotta keep moving south.
00:44If travel is the true test of a relationship,
00:46ours is about to get stretched to the limit.
00:49If that tree breaks, we have to talk about your diet.
00:52Shut up!
00:53This is gonna be hell on Earth.
00:57There's a wall, Mike. There's a wall on the right. Hold the wall.
01:18We started off in Florence, Italy.
01:21We traveled a few hours on land, and then a few more at sea.
01:26But now, we're indoors.
01:28And what's worrisome is we are being guided somewhere, blindfolded,
01:33and I don't know what's in store.
01:39When you lose a sense, you rely really heavily on all the others.
01:42I can't see.
01:43But this place stinks.
01:45I can really smell it, and it feels rough.
01:48And there's loud crunching noise as we're walking over debris of something.
01:51It's really unpleasant.
01:53Oh.
01:54Oh.
01:55You okay?
01:56Yeah.
01:57That was horrible.
01:58That was pretty abrupt.
01:59Whack me in the face with something.
02:02I take my blindfold off, and it's still just as dark.
02:17What is this weird place?
02:18It's obviously some place we don't want to stay in.
02:20Even with my blindfold off, I can't see a dang thing until I get my night vision.
02:23So I still gotta be careful, because there could be something dangerous around me.
02:24Hello, hello.
02:25Is the door locked?
02:26Yeah.
02:27That's solid.
02:28Okay there, Ninja.
02:29All right, that's a solid door.
02:30Okay, so it's good.
02:31I got my blindfold off, and it's still just as dark.
02:32What is this weird place?
02:33It's obviously some place we don't want to stay in.
02:36Even with my blindfold off, I can't see a dang thing until I get my night vision.
02:42So I still gotta be careful, because there could be something dangerous around me.
02:45Hello, hello.
02:46Is the door locked?
02:47Yeah.
02:48That's solid.
02:50Okay there, ninja.
02:55All right, that's a solid door.
02:57solid door. I mean, look at how thick that is. Oh, s**t. What's up? My little monkey hands aren't
03:05barely fitting through that little teeny hole. I can get to my elbow joint, but I just can't.
03:12That's as far as I can reach. It's about right here. Well, it has to be another way out. All right,
03:19hold on. Watch this. Got some nails.
03:27That thing ain't budging. All right, that's not working. Look, check what's in the bag. Maybe
03:31there's a key. I didn't even think. I didn't even think. All right. My eyes are getting used to the
03:38dark. Yeah. I can see. We have our bag of random supplies, which may or may not turn out to be
03:43useful. Battery, a D-battery. Interesting. Maybe I can find a use for it. Ah, chemlight. Inside this
03:51bag, thank heavens, is one of those chemlight things that you snap and they illuminate. So we've got
03:56that. We can see now. Well, it's a first aid kit. So we've got a suture. So they're expecting
04:01us to get cut. These are iodine drops for treating a cut and a couple of dressings.
04:08There's something else here. Passports and... Okay, credit card, passport money. All right.
04:14And on me, I've got a little makeup compact with a mirror in it and a knife. What every girl
04:21needs. That's it. That is a very Spartan bag. I got my blade and my clothes, hat and gloves.
04:32All right. Wow. I can see over there, um, there's bars on the window. Look. Look over
04:37there. In the room opposite. Yeah, I sold that empty room. Didn't pay attention to the bars.
04:42This is, uh, a prison. Now, in all my travels and all my wars, I've had times where I've
04:49been locked up, incarcerated. And, uh, I gotta say, being in this prison trying to escape is
04:56bringing back a whole pool of bad feelings. My powder's got a mirror in it. Sweet, sweet.
05:04Okay. Okay. This side is the hinge. I can see a hinge. Okay. So, the lock is on this side
05:18and I can't see. Oh, right. Okay. What it is, it's a big, flat, bolt-type thing. And it's
05:28not double locked. There's no padlock on it. So, if you can reach down there, you should be
05:32to unlock it. All right. Let me try. So, it's literally here. You can see the bolts
05:40on the side. I'm feeling something. I'm here. Did you do it? Is it longer? No. Okay. That
05:50didn't work. When you're locked in a room, you have this sort of instinctive feeling, sort
05:57of claustrophobia. You just want to get out. The longer we're in here, the more energy we're
06:02spending trying to get out and not getting anywhere. And if we're in here too long and
06:05it gets dark, we're here for the night. Would this go out the hole? You sitting?
06:11All right. It goes out. There you go. There you go. I got it. Okay. There's something.
06:19I think that might be it. Woo! Yes! We're out. Okay. Why don't you search to the right
06:37and I'll search to the left. Let's find a way out of here. Is this army barracks, do you
06:42think? Maybe they're... I don't think they put bars in army barracks. We just broke out
06:50of a prison cell. Now it looks like we've got to break out of a prison and who knows what
06:55we've got to do after that. It's dark in here. I'm looking around for a way out and I find
07:04a really dark room. And then I find bones. One, two, three, four. I'm going to tell Ruth
07:16about that. She'll freak. I don't know what the story is, but whatever it is, I ain't telling
07:20Ruth because I don't need her to be worried about anything else except getting out of here.
07:23Ruth! Anything? Honey, I found the stairs. Come on this way. More bars. There are bars
07:37on every window that we come across. This is a prison. Look, this is all corroded. Why
07:44you can't wallop that out. All right, let me see. That's it. Maybe that stuff ain't coming
08:00out. That has got probably reinforced barbs going into the cement. That's not coming out.
08:07All right, come on. Let's keep looking.
08:08We didn't walk this far when we were blindfolded. No, you're right. There's another way which
08:16we've gone wrong. There's some light this way. I forgot this. Locked. Here. Mike, this
08:25is metal. Use this as a crowbar. Great. There we go. That's it. There we go. Good. There we
08:33go. Good job, babe. Outside. Woo! Not quite outside. There's no way out. It's another courtyard.
08:45This is an exercise yard, isn't it? Probably. Is that what it is? Yeah. There's something I'm
08:50noticing here. There's no bars on those windows upstairs. Yeah. So if we can just get upstairs
08:55somehow, we might be able to climb out. It's a tree, bud. This window, babe. Ah, looky here. There's
09:03a little overhang. I'm thinking that is the way. I think we might be able to get out of there. Yeah.
09:10But how solid is that thing? I don't want to jump down to that and go through it. Yeah, that's a good
09:13question. All I know is right now, this is the best chance we've seen to get out of this maze.
09:19Well, let me go first because you often say things that are doable when they're not doable for me.
09:22So if I can do it, you'll definitely be able to do it. But the reverse doesn't always work,
09:27does it? Yeah. No. Right, stand back, please. I need to get up here.
09:35Normally, you'll just barrel through something dangerous and stupid and expect me to follow you.
09:41Dangerous, maybe, but not stupid.
09:46If I just jump, will I go through it? I don't know, babe. I have no idea. It's a pretty
09:51decrepit in building. Seriously, if I slip, I'm going to crack my skull.
10:03Seriously, if I slip, I'm going to crack my skull.
10:05Oh, it's good to see you over there. Oh, nice.
10:18Oh, that looks pretty solid, yeah? This is solid. You can probably jump straight onto this.
10:22Oh, man, this is going to be impossible. We're going to rip to shreds getting this thing.
10:26It's day one. I've been trapped inside a prison somewhere in Southern Europe.
10:29We were locked in a cell. We've managed to escape, and now we've got to get out of the prison itself.
10:35Watch your eyes. There's loads of little tiny retina stabbers.
10:39Well, if you let me go first, babe, I think I can clear more branches out and be easier for you.
10:42All right, then.
10:45I'd still love you if you weren't a strong man, but it does help.
10:48It's handy sometimes.
10:49It is useful.
10:51Monkey boy, baby.
10:52Oh, you are a monkey.
10:53Yeah. You want to come on down?
10:57Let's see what I'm doing there.
10:59This will break my back falling down this.
11:01Okay, good. Now, you can put both feet there. You can put both feet there.
11:04Hold on, I've got my breasts caught around something, and my foot's locked in.
11:06Oh, there. Lovely. Don't leave them in a tree.
11:09Okay, you're good.
11:10Right, I'm down.
11:13Wow. That's obviously where we went in.
11:16See that?
11:18So, he walked us in, and he locked us in. What a rat.
11:23Oh, okay. Well, that solves that.
11:28I was just thinking, how could we not just find the easy way out?
11:33Hello?
11:35It's a good thing to do.
11:39It's a bottle.
11:42We ain't got anything to use to carry water.
11:47It's nasty, but, uh, it's got the lid on it.
11:50Okay, let's head down to the sea.
11:53See what we can see by the sea, said he to she.
11:57You can see a pillbox over there.
12:02It's a little too big to be a bunker.
12:05Let's see what this weird thing is.
12:06It's strange. It looks like an old-fashioned military thing, doesn't it?
12:08But it's not old. I mean, these are not old rocks.
12:12It looks like a medieval battle station.
12:17Water.
12:18Oh, nice.
12:19Okay, well, I'm putting that bottle to work, girl.
12:22We're going to get some water.
12:24Yeah, but this is disused. Look at it. It's all disgusting.
12:26It's water, babe. It's the first water we've seen since we've been here.
12:29Yes, it's true.
12:31I'm going to take some of these, uh, iodine drops here.
12:36Iodine drops that you use for your cuts and wounds are the same thing that, uh, the military uses to treat water.
12:43Shake that up and let that work for about 30 minutes, and that will kill the bacteria that are in there and make the water safe to drink.
12:51All right.
12:52Here, come and look. Come and look at this.
12:56Okay, so this is obviously a natural little port.
12:58That looks sort of military, utilitarian.
13:01What I'm looking for is any other signs of life around us, and what I'm seeing is nothing on that side.
13:06That's a long way away. I don't see anything along that ridgeline, and I don't see anything along that land across from us.
13:14So, it's getting late. It's going to be getting dark.
13:17We best be thinking about where we're going to be sleeping, and I definitely don't want to sleep in that old prison building.
13:21So, let's find something better down that way.
13:25So, now it's starting to get dark. I've got to change my focus.
13:28No longer trying to figure out clues from the environment where we are.
13:31It's like we've got to figure out what we're going to do for shelter and for the night.
13:34These are old beds.
13:35Yeah, I bet you these old bunks got some stories to tell.
13:39It is very clearly abandoned. Ain't been no people there in a long time.
13:45Ah, these places are nasty.
13:48This one's not too half bad. Being up elevated a little bit.
13:53That is a seat cushion. I'm thinking that's going to be a pillow.
13:57It's a sign, honey. This is where we need to sleep.
14:01On that?
14:02Well, it's some kind of cushion.
14:04Oh, that's awful.
14:05And look, here's a bed.
14:08Let's try to carry this around.
14:09Well, baby, I don't want to be negative, but I hate your plan.
14:11This is just awful.
14:12The last thing on earth I want to do is sleep in this place.
14:16It's a skanky old prison.
14:21No, it's just awful.
14:22It's too awful, mate.
14:23What are you talking about?
14:25I'm not going to sleep on a prison mattress.
14:27God knows what's going on in that.
14:29Sorry, not happening.
14:30All right, I'll tell you what.
14:32Well, I'll get another bed frame, and I'll make this more supported.
14:35We'll be off the ground.
14:36Why don't you gather up some green stuff that we can put down as fresh and soft and clean.
14:41Insulate from whatever horrors might have occurred on it.
14:44I mean, think about it, Mike.
14:45Don't think about it.
14:46Just get some green stuff, and I'll build the rest.
14:52The key when collecting bedding is make sure you get the end branches, like, with thin middle sections.
14:57You don't want, like, a big stick sticking in your backside.
15:00Shh.
15:04Okay.
15:04It's a bed.
15:16Oh, gosh.
15:17It's comfy.
15:18Yeah.
15:20And we get up in the morning, we make an assessment, scout around some more, figure out where we think we are.
15:25Make a plan on what we got to do.
15:28Either way, we're in prison tonight, baby.
15:30And guess what?
15:33You won't be mine.
15:35Buck.
15:36Squeezed.
15:38I'm just thinking, you know, last time I was in prison, I didn't get no conjugal visits.
15:42There's no way on earth that is going to happen.
15:46It's just so horrible.
15:47Neck hurts.
15:58Are you itching?
15:59No.
15:59My neck hurts.
16:01It's day two of being stuck in a prison compound somewhere in southern Europe.
16:05Before we can figure out where we are or how to get back to civilization, first we've got to figure out how to escape this hellhole.
16:12Do you want any more water?
16:13No, I had some a bit to go.
16:18You're like a hobo knocking back, rubbing alcohol.
16:22I'm starving and I want to get away from here now.
16:24I've had enough of here.
16:25Yeah.
16:26The thing about hunger is when you get really, really hungry, you just feel nauseous and weak.
16:32And I'm exhausted.
16:34We've not eaten anything.
16:36So what do you think?
16:38Game plan.
16:39We've got two choices.
16:40We'll either go down and look at that sea there, which we didn't get to yesterday, or we climb this thing behind us and have a look.
16:48Oh, get that off you.
16:49That was on here as an incidating fabric.
16:52Well, now it's going to be my do-rag.
16:55You and I have a different concept of hygiene.
16:57Yep.
16:58All right.
16:59Let's go look around.
17:00Are you not taking our things?
17:02We're just going to go look around, baby.
17:04Find out what our situation is.
17:06I want to see what's around us.
17:08Figs.
17:15That is breakfast.
17:16Yes.
17:18Figs.
17:19Yeah.
17:22There's flies on them.
17:26Breakfast.
17:32Terribly sweet.
17:33That's off.
17:34Is that off?
17:35Figs are dried out and disgusting and awful.
17:38But even the figs are diseased here.
17:41And then they're good.
17:42Mm-mm.
17:42It's just a nightmare.
17:43Food, but I can't eat it.
17:45Oh.
17:46They're all pretty rank.
17:47Yeah.
17:48They aren't coming down.
17:48All right.
17:49We've had a little bit of water see us through the night.
17:54We've had a failed attempt at some figs.
17:56We've got to get some food because we've got a big day ahead of us and we need all the energy
18:00that we can get.
18:01This place is huge.
18:03I'm going to go up this way.
18:05Go up to the top.
18:05We've scoured this complex and not found anything we can use.
18:12There's only one other choice, which is go to the highest thing that we can see and see
18:16what there is to see.
18:19Ow!
18:21Oh.
18:22Oh, that's serious, baby.
18:23God, it's slicing like a razor.
18:25Yeah.
18:25This is a dead acacia tree here.
18:28Ah, that's right in a dangerous lady area.
18:30Just hold my hand, please, higher.
18:32I got you, baby.
18:35Oh, gosh.
18:37You ran right into another one, baby.
18:38Oh, no.
18:40Those little pretty yellow flowers got vicious thorns.
18:44All the rocks are razor sharp.
18:47Everything about this place is hostile and vicious.
18:49It's pretty mean.
18:51Let's go up a little bit higher.
18:53Keep an eye on the snake.
18:55I'm looking.
18:56I'm looking.
19:00Well, I can still see an awful lot of nothing.
19:05I mean, it's looking increasingly like the prison is the only thing around here.
19:10Yeah.
19:12Here's the sea.
19:13I can see water from that side all the way to that side.
19:18And then I can see nothing but land in the distance.
19:22This whole prison, this island.
19:25On the mainland, it's just a question of walking far enough to find civilization.
19:30But on an island, we don't have that option.
19:33We gotta get off this rock.
19:37This whole prison is an island.
19:40We gotta get off this rock.
19:41It's day two of being trapped in an abandoned prison complex somewhere in southern Europe.
19:47We just found out the entire prison is an island.
19:50Now we gotta find a way to get off this rock and navigate back to civilization.
19:55There's no walls, you know?
19:57No fences.
19:58None.
19:59So that means they got one big natural fence, which is...
20:01A sea.
20:01Obviously, a sea barrier.
20:04We're gonna have to figure out how to make some sort of flotation device and get ourselves off this.
20:10Obviously, we need a boat or something that will float.
20:14Best place to find that, to my way of thinking, is go down and check out the port area.
20:19Oh, gosh.
20:21Check this out.
20:23The theater?
20:24Wow.
20:25I mean, like, proper.
20:27Like, they had to probably put the little band here.
20:29Look, a little stage setting.
20:31Wow.
20:32Even a little fireplace to keep them warm.
20:35That's pretty cool.
20:36What an incredible place.
20:37Come up here.
20:38Pull up a pew.
20:39I wanna show you my, um...
20:40Oh, man.
20:40My plan, my theory of where we are.
20:43Very good.
20:44Michelle, take the briefing.
20:47Okay.
20:48So, this is my theory.
20:50This is Italy.
20:51I'm kicking Sicily down there.
20:55Okay, so, north is my nose.
20:57You're coming south to me.
20:58You interrupted the briefing.
20:59We started in the fine city of Florence.
21:02In a car for a few hours.
21:04Could have been in the Mediterranean.
21:06Could be in the Adriatic.
21:09In fact, we are on a gigantic military-style prison island.
21:16If there was a large military prison in the Mediterranean, I think I'd have heard of it.
21:20Yeah, for sure.
21:21Over here, on the other side of the Adriatic, what is now Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Serbia.
21:29A couple of decades ago, this was communist Yugoslavia.
21:32Mm-hmm.
21:33We are in ex-Yugoslavia.
21:35So, it makes sense that this would have been one of the secret communist-type prison camps.
21:40Yep.
21:41And I think we're in Croatia, because Croatia is known as the country of a thousand islands.
21:46I think that's a good guess.
21:48But the bottom line is we're still on an island, and we've got to get off it.
21:53It's a good briefing, Sergeant.
21:54I know it's a good briefing.
21:55It's a good briefing.
21:59Huh.
22:04Cordage.
22:05I was just hoping for boatage.
22:08I think that was a wishful thinking, sweetie.
22:10All right.
22:11I got a plan.
22:12Let's split up, scour the place, everything and anything that we can find that we can use to make into a flotation device.
22:19Let's just make it a pile right here, and then we'll see what we've got.
22:21And we'll start building with whatever we have.
22:23I've got a lot of experience at making rafts from ponchos and foliage, so I feel pretty confident that we can make something as long as we've got some core elements that will float.
22:36That looks good.
22:38It's a score.
22:41Oh, look.
22:42You've got one.
22:43All right.
22:43That's another one.
22:45Their trash is our treasure today.
22:48All right.
22:49Let's not look at some...
22:49We're going to need some cordage.
22:50Check if they float.
22:52First.
22:52No, I'm not going to check that they float.
22:54They're a plastic container.
22:55I don't see holes in them.
22:57I want to get off this island, but I'm scared at the idea of actually building some kind of boat.
23:03I know nothing about this.
23:04We're going out into the open sea.
23:07I don't know if this thing's going to fall apart.
23:08Let's try to find at least two longer, strong poles, maybe six to ten foot, and that's going to be the structure that's going to hold our little platform.
23:24They're just quite a little platform.
23:25It's a very little platform.
23:28If they don't hold up here, they ain't going to hold up out of sea.
23:33Are these planks any good?
23:35Oh, they look great.
23:36Because when I found these, there's a whole room full of pallets, which are proper pallets, about ten feet long.
23:43Really?
23:43Yeah.
23:44I mean, proper, proper pallets.
23:46And also there's just reams of paper.
23:50So if we need to start a fire.
23:52Also, I want you to check what's written on it.
23:57Slavic.
23:58We're in the former Yugoslavia.
24:00In what's now Croatia.
24:01Yep.
24:02So in this room, I found a bundle of paper, and it confirms where we are.
24:06Printed on these prison records is Zagreb, Croatia.
24:10So let's start thinking about how to do this.
24:13The platform that we'll be sitting on.
24:18How the hell are we going to get these barrels together?
24:20Well, I'm thinking that net's going to be part of it.
24:22This is where I could use your brain power.
24:24Look, if you're going to lash all these individual bits of wood together,
24:28just come and look at that big pallet that I found.
24:31All right.
24:32Let's take a look.
24:33Come on.
24:34Look.
24:36Ready made.
24:37Wow.
24:39It's solid, look.
24:41I don't miss anything too heavy, but...
24:43No, this will be all right.
24:44It'll be all right.
24:45Oh, goodness gracious.
24:47Hold on, I'm going to drop it.
24:48Wait, wait.
24:48You're going to need to rest on my bottom.
24:49All right.
24:50Okay.
24:51There you go.
24:52This hurts, this hurts, this hurts, this hurts.
24:54Go, just move, move.
24:55We've got to get it.
24:55This is going to hurt.
24:56That's all there is to it.
24:59It's coming.
25:00Just shove, huh?
25:01Ready?
25:03Ready?
25:03One, two, three.
25:04All right.
25:06That's going to hold.
25:09Look, it fit.
25:10It fit perfectly.
25:11Look at it.
25:11It's the ideal platform to make our raft from.
25:15I hate to say it, but she's right.
25:18Say again?
25:18And it's good.
25:19Say again?
25:19I hate to say it, but she's right.
25:21And again?
25:21And it's good.
25:22You are a genius, because that's kind of a perfect fit.
25:24I know.
25:25That's the point I was making.
25:27No, I wasn't thinking about the size here.
25:28I was thinking about the number of barrels that we got.
25:30Yeah, well, I was thinking about the size.
25:31That's what I was saying to you.
25:32You weren't listening, because you never do.
25:33You close your ears.
25:34See, there's a difference.
25:35Women thinking about size, men thinking about numbers.
25:38What?
25:39Now we've got some good stuff.
25:41We've got a solid platform.
25:42We've gathered up some things that will flow.
25:44We've got some cordage.
25:46Now it's about business of putting this thing together,
25:48and it's got to be seaworthy,
25:49because there ain't no telling what's going to happen
25:51once we get off this rock.
25:53Okay, I've got us.
25:54We've got a lot of stuff, and a top of the water,
25:57and the iodine is in.
25:58Good job.
25:59Good job.
26:02How are we going to launch this, baby?
26:03Hold on.
26:05Let's do like they do ships.
26:06Make a launch pad.
26:10This is just to help us, baby, just to slide it in.
26:12That's it.
26:13One, two, three, lift.
26:15Bloody hell.
26:16Okay.
26:18That's it.
26:19Woo!
26:20It's in!
26:21It floats!
26:23All right, girl.
26:23Oh.
26:25Let's sit here and wait for you.
26:26Yep, sit.
26:32Hey, hey.
26:33Escape from a Britain island!
26:34Okay, let's swap paddles.
26:36Wow, you know what's happening?
26:37We're just moving.
26:38Anyway, the wind's taking us.
26:39Yes, it is.
26:41This wind does not bode well out there, Mike.
26:43It's going to be strong.
26:45It's going to be real strong when we get outside this inlet.
26:49Straight ahead to that big piece of land.
26:53It works!
26:54I'm really happy because I know we can get away from here.
26:57But we're going out into the open sea, and we don't know exactly where we're going.
27:01I don't know what the currents are going to be like out there.
27:04I don't know if this thing's going to fall apart.
27:09Woo!
27:10It works!
27:11So now it's into the big water.
27:13And what lies ahead, we don't know.
27:15It's day two of being lost somewhere in Croatia.
27:19After being trapped on an old communist prison island, we escaped by building a raft.
27:24Now we have to navigate our way back to civilization.
27:26Now I'm not exactly sure where we're going to land.
27:30All I know is we're getting off that piece of land.
27:34Now we're striking out for sea.
27:36I'm not going to say anything about Bruce paddling at this point.
27:39Oh, come on!
27:41I paddle just fine.
27:46We're going the wrong way.
27:47Huh?
27:48We're going the wrong way.
27:49We're going out to the rough water.
27:51I don't want to be there.
27:52Wait, wait, wait.
27:53Just hold on.
27:57The wave almost got me.
27:58Okay.
28:00The waves are big.
28:01The wind is strong.
28:03The current is strong.
28:05We don't know where we're going.
28:07We don't know how long we're going to be out here.
28:09And we're at the mercy of the elements right now.
28:12I feel the wind's pushing us this way, but the current's sucking us that way.
28:15You feel it?
28:16It doesn't feel like we're going very far, but we're so deep in the water here, babe.
28:21It's kind of hard to get a sense of your distance.
28:26I was hoping to get in that little inlet, but I don't think the wind's going to let us in the current.
28:30I want to go here, because that's too sharp looking.
28:33Okay.
28:34If we can land there, then that's great.
28:36I'm going to have to get wet feet now.
28:43Hey!
28:44It's all right.
28:45It's all right.
28:45That's what I want.
28:47Set up on the ledge there.
28:48Dry land!
28:49By the time we reach land, I'm not euphoric.
28:52I'm just relieved.
28:54Have that last drop of water, because you did more paddling than me.
28:57All right.
28:57That's it.
29:04Empty on the water.
29:08Bag.
29:10Okay.
29:12Watch yourself.
29:13Coming through.
29:14Coming through?
29:15Thanks.
29:16Well, I think, if you look at the horizon, that is the only place to go, because it's the
29:20only patch of green, and that might mean there's water up there.
29:24That's the greenest thing we've seen.
29:26Let's give it a go.
29:26The last thing I want to do is climb up a gigantic hill, but we're out of water, and
29:33at the top, I can see greenery.
29:34Something up there is sucking up moisture.
29:38It's pretty rough, so well.
29:41I'm surprised anything can grow here.
29:46We're coming up this very difficult, steep hill.
29:51And the sun is just beating down.
29:53It's relentless.
29:56We're going to get to the top of this dang hill.
30:06Hey, everyone.
30:07What's that?
30:10What's that right there?
30:11Houses!
30:12House tops.
30:13All right.
30:15Hello!
30:15We've got to walk down there, baby.
30:18Come on.
30:19That's fantastic.
30:20I can't tell you how pleased I can see that.
30:22Man, I'm smoked.
30:24It's a little village.
30:26What I love about this is that if this were an American mountain home, they'd be inclined
30:32to shoot us when we show up.
30:34Being this is some old school European place, they're more inclined to give us some tea and
30:39bread.
30:40Hello.
30:41What's that mean?
30:43It's Russian.
30:45Some of the old former Yugoslav people might speak Russian still.
30:49Oh, um, this is...
30:53My house is no good.
30:54Derelict.
30:56You know, this whole village seems quiet.
31:00Oh, no.
31:01I don't see windows and I don't see doors.
31:03Hello!
31:04Oh, Mike, look at the chimney.
31:05It's trashed.
31:06Ah, crap.
31:08There's no signs of life anywhere.
31:10We are in the land of deserted villages and buildings and islands.
31:15No one lives here anymore.
31:16Hello!
31:16You know, this whole village seems quiet.
31:25Oh, Mike, look up there.
31:26Look at the chimney.
31:28It's trashed.
31:29Ah, crap.
31:30It's late day two.
31:32We just escaped an abandoned prison island and now we're trying to find our way back to
31:36civilization.
31:37After reaching another landmass, we immediately find a village, only to learn it's just as empty
31:43as the place we left.
31:44Now we've been almost 24 hours without food.
31:49Let's look around.
31:49Maybe somebody's here.
31:50Come on.
31:53Oh, Mike.
31:55Here's something that's good.
31:57Is there water in it?
31:58Yeah.
32:00Those disgusting cockroach type things?
32:01No, no.
32:02Look, look, look, look.
32:03Ah!
32:04Yeah, I know, but look at the creatures.
32:05I don't care about the creatures.
32:06Let's look at the water.
32:07I don't know how she does it, but Ruth just manages to go right straight to the best thing
32:12in the whole wide world.
32:13A well.
32:14Absolutely nasty, but that's exactly what we need.
32:20That's clear.
32:21Look at that.
32:22It's pretty clean, baby.
32:23Yeah, we can't see drums.
32:25Put some iodine drops in it.
32:26Oh, look at this.
32:27In half an hour, we'll be able to drink.
32:29Okay, let's see what else is in this village.
32:31Let's see what else is around here.
32:44Let's scout the village.
32:45Maybe there's some food around.
32:46Maybe some old canned food.
32:48Maybe something that we can use.
32:50So, we started looking.
32:51Oh, man.
32:51What in the world?
32:51God dang.
32:52There are no signs of people in any time recently.
33:10Oh, wow.
33:16There's a bedroom.
33:18And a ladder to get up to it.
33:24This place is hideous.
33:25Wow.
33:31Look at all these clothes.
33:34Look at that.
33:35Look at that.
33:36A helmet.
33:37It has a World War II Russian-style helmet.
33:42So be it.
33:43Whoa!
33:44Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad.
33:45God dang it.
33:46Ha, ha, ha, ha.
33:51Sweetie?
33:52Yeah.
33:54You know, I'm thinking.
33:56We've got water.
33:57What's that?
33:58You know, I found a neat, nasty old house full of linens.
34:03And this helmet was in one of the chests.
34:05And this is an old World War II Russian helmet.
34:07And it got me excited.
34:08I'm thinking I'm going to use this for boiling in.
34:10And I'm seeing all these rats.
34:12And I'm thinking.
34:13Oh, no.
34:13Rats too, baby.
34:14No.
34:15Rats too.
34:15Sorry.
34:16You know, I'm looking for food.
34:18And the only thing I'm seeing moving is rodents.
34:20Well, it's rodents on the menu.
34:21Do you have any idea how many diseases rats carry?
34:25I mean, there's a lot of diseases that rats carry.
34:27That's a fact.
34:27Bumonic plague.
34:28Yes.
34:29But this is kind of a.
34:31This is not a big city.
34:32This is country.
34:33I'm hoping that they're fairly healthy and natural just living in this abandoned place.
34:37Okay?
34:38I'm going to try to catch some rats.
34:40And I want you to start the fire.
34:43Remember how to do the prison lighter?
34:45Battery.
34:45That big battery.
34:46That's right.
34:47And we got the suture from the first aid kit.
34:49The needle.
34:50So use the needle.
34:51And go ahead and make us a prison lighter and get a fire.
34:53I think I can.
34:54I'm going to give you the pot.
34:56I'm going to give you the bag.
35:00With the water.
35:02First aid kit and the battery.
35:04Um, will you gut it?
35:05If you make the fire, I'll clean the food.
35:08I'm hungry.
35:08I'm going to feed my woman.
35:10I'm going to go caveman.
35:11I'm grabbing me some rocks and I'm going to thump me some critters on the head.
35:17Whack me a rat.
35:19These are nettles.
35:23Once you cook them, they taste fantastic.
35:26And they're full of calcium and protein.
35:30Ah, there you go.
35:36Oh, God, God.
35:37Come and get out of that room, boy.
35:39Get out of the room.
35:42Where'd you go?
35:43Oh.
35:48There you are.
35:48I got you.
35:49Oh, you're going down, buddy.
35:51Where's that?
35:52Ah, God dang.
35:54Boy.
35:56Come on.
35:57Come on.
36:00Oh, God.
36:01Oh, dude.
36:03All right, come here.
36:04I'm sorry.
36:06All right, mister, we'll finish you off.
36:08Oof.
36:11Okay.
36:12Thank you for the food, Mr. Rat.
36:15This is food for me and Mama.
36:19Some days you're the rat.
36:20Some days you're the cat.
36:26It's called a prison lighter because prisoners don't have access to cigarette lighters,
36:29but they'll often have access to batteries for radios and stuff.
36:33Mike taught me this trick years ago because, of course, he's been in prison.
36:36The key is to break the seal and short out the positive and negative terminals.
36:41And you've got to use something that will conduct electricity, like a paper clip or this
36:45metal sutra needle.
36:48This feels so wrong.
36:49And this will produce enough heat to start a fire.
36:53But you've got to be careful because it gets hot fast.
37:04Whoa!
37:05Whoa!
37:06Whoa!
37:07Ha, ha, ha!
37:12I smell fire.
37:14Oh!
37:15It's got a rat.
37:16All right, in the pot then, okay?
37:21I've never eaten a rat before.
37:23Have you eaten a rat before?
37:24Yeah.
37:25Maybe I'm starving.
37:27I mean, like getting mean starving, you know?
37:29I want this thing cooked the best I've ever cooked anything in my life.
37:33If it disintegrates and it's just liquid, that'll be fine.
37:37Rat broth.
37:38Rat broth.
37:39I mean, seriously.
37:40I like this, you know, man catch food, woman make fire, man clean food, woman cook food.
37:51I did both.
37:52I killed it and I cleaned it.
37:53You started a fire and you're cooking it.
37:56We can continue this kind of practice at home if you like.
37:59Man go to grocery store.
38:01Man write shopping list.
38:02Man look in the fridge, see what's missing.
38:04Yes.
38:06I always know what's missing.
38:07Man cook.
38:08I always put it on the list.
38:09Oh, I look disgusting.
38:12We're using unknown well water and an unknown helmet and unknown rat meat.
38:19And here we are cooking a rat in a hat.
38:23Like that.
38:24Oh, stop it.
38:25I read too many Dr. Seuss stories to the boy, what can I say?
38:30All right, come here, Mr. Rat.
38:32Careful.
38:32I'm not worried about the ash, that ain't gonna hurt nothing.
38:35There you go.
38:37Oh.
38:38Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow.
38:41Three, two, here we go.
38:42Yeah.
38:47Oh, man.
38:49Baby, I've got the anal tube here.
38:52Look, it's got an ass.
38:53I've got a rat's ass.
38:55Or penis.
38:56What is that?
38:56What is that?
39:00Baby, I've got the anal tube here.
39:03It's boiled, honey.
39:04Look, it's got an ass.
39:05I've got a rat's ass.
39:07It's end of day two, and we're stuck in an abandoned village somewhere in Croatia.
39:11We haven't eaten this entire time, but Ruth is about to get introduced to a rare delicacy I like to call rat stew.
39:19I've just never been fond of boiled meat anyway.
39:32Thank you, Mr. Rat.
39:35Now, you know how everyone says everything tastes like chicken, when it really, really doesn't?
39:40This actually does.
39:42Well, it tastes like badly cooked chicken, I guess.
39:46I'm talking about a rat, and his penis is sticking up my nose.
39:51I have got a rodent's penis up my nostril.
39:56It's insult to injury.
39:59It's payback from the rat.
40:00Listen.
40:06You hear that?
40:07I hear it, too.
40:09Sometimes at night, you can hear sounds from far away because of temperature change.
40:12The cold air at the higher elevations makes the sound waves bounce back down to Earth, sometimes as far as 10 miles away.
40:20It's starting to get dark.
40:22It sounds like I'm hearing stuff.
40:24Mike, that's music.
40:28That sounds like civilization.
40:29That is music.
40:31All right, I'm going to grab the bag and break the fire.
40:33We're getting out of here.
40:38When you're in a natural environment, a man-made noise really sticks out, and I can hear something, something rhythmic that's here, and then it's not.
40:47And it's weird, because we've been here for hours, and I've heard nothing.
40:51Damn it.
40:53Okay.
40:54Yeah, sound travels a long way.
40:56I don't care.
40:57Okay, but it still could be several miles away from us.
40:59That is a recognizable sound.
41:02That's people.
41:05Whoa, wait, wait.
41:06There's a snake.
41:07Careful.
41:09Careful, careful.
41:10Yeah, stay clear, though.
41:11Let's go around it.
41:17That way.
41:22You hear it?
41:24That way.
41:24This way, yeah.
41:29Look!
41:31Civilization!
41:31Woo!
41:32Come on.
41:35Look at that!
41:37A non-deserted town.
41:38A non-deserted town.
41:41Okay.
41:42We're still about two miles away, but...
41:44That town is not deserted.
41:45That town is not deserted.
41:46Definitely not deserted.
41:49Here I was thinking we're gonna be sleeping with, uh, rats.
41:54But instead, our daddy is not going into town looking all mess.
41:58Come on.
42:01I can't believe I just ate a rat.
42:03But...
42:04Our journey began in an abandoned prison, that we later learned was an island somewhere in
42:09Croatia.
42:10Using a makeshift raft, we escaped the prison, only to reach what turned out to be an empty
42:14village.
42:15But in this case, civilization eventually found us.
