00:00This is a production of Iowa Public Television.
00:30And welcome again to the big match.
00:32And again, we're packed with action as we bring you the match that produced most goals yesterday in the first division.
00:37Also the one that saw Arsenal back on the right road, and for good measure, the top game in the second division as well.
00:43But for our main match, we go to that high-scoring battle between Chelsea and Coventry.
00:48But Osgood and Garland as target men in the middle there.
00:51Osgood going for this one.
00:53And will it go in?
00:54No!
00:55It's finally kicked away by Mick Cooper across that line.
00:58West Bromwich Albion against Arsenal.
01:00The store is run beautifully.
01:03And Hull against Blackpool.
01:05Good luck by Blackpool.
01:07Hutchison.
01:07Oh, what a battle!
01:08This must be a goal for James.
01:10No!
01:10A good save on the line by De Vries.
01:12So a lot of good action coming your way in the next hour.
01:15And during the course of the programme, we also talk to Peter Osgood, who now happily seems to have settled all his differences at Chelsea.
01:21But now let's make a start with the first of today's games.
01:24And for that, we go down to Stamford Bridge for Chelsea against Coventry.
01:28The pitch heavily watered all night, looking immaculate as well.
01:31And Chelsea now recovering fast from a faltering start.
01:34Led out, as usual, by skipper Ron Harris.
01:37A side that has been badly struck down by injuries.
01:39But all eyes today, of course, on 22-year-old Chris Garland at number eight.
01:43The £100,000 buy from Bristol City.
01:46Another chance in goal for young John Phillips as well.
01:49So as Chelsea go off for their pre-match kickabout, we turn now to Coventry City.
01:53They too have started badly with only one win from their first six games.
01:56But skipper Jeff Blockley has a young side that can only get better.
02:00Particularly when their new signing Chris Chilton is fit to take his place.
02:03Mortimer, Parker, Maguire, incidentally, are all teenagers.
02:07But today, for Chelsea's young Chris Garland, it's going to be a nerve-testing day as he tastes the all-round pressures of first division football.
02:14With those photographers wanting just one more, please, Chris, before you go.
02:18And, of course, for Coventry City's John O'Rourke, a return to the ground where he started his professional career as a Chelsea youngster.
02:24The referee today is Tony Morrissey of Cheshire.
02:27The 35,000 crowd ready for the start.
02:31So Chris Garland's first kick of the ball in a Chelsea shirt gets us away.
02:36Chelsea defending the goal to our right, all in blue.
02:38So, Coventry in their second strip of green and black stripes.
02:44Chelsea, who have something of a hold over the Midland side.
02:46They've won the last six league matches between these two clubs.
02:55Harris with the throw.
02:59And a free kick.
03:00To Chelsea.
03:06Here's Chris Garland, who was telling us at lunchtime that he's going to have 110% here today.
03:10Well, that wasn't a 110% free kick there by John Boyle.
03:13But Boyle gets a second go at it.
03:15Threw now to Osgood, but he couldn't quite control that.
03:18And he'll be annoyed with himself for that.
03:19Because, really, the chance was there for Osgood, unexpectedly, in this opening minute.
03:27Haussmann then with the throw for Chelsea.
03:30Garland coming towards him.
03:33But Parker to Nodded away.
03:35Haussmann again.
03:36Haussmann now with room to cross that ball.
03:38And Parker this time to give away the corner.
03:42Coventry have already had one fruitless trip to London this week already.
03:46When they lost 4-0 on Monday night to West Ham.
03:50Chelsea's corner.
03:51Dempsey's gone right up.
03:53Boyle with it.
03:55And Nodded back to Boyle again.
03:57With another chance to cross it.
03:58Dempsey, in fact, furiously trying to get in.
04:02But it was Wilf Smith who got his head there and got it away.
04:08Boyle again with the throw.
04:14Osgood.
04:15Watch by Parker.
04:17Chance for Haussmann.
04:18Such a good crosser.
04:19Garland lifting himself, but not quite high enough.
04:22And Willie Carr now for Coventry.
04:23Rafferty to Carr.
04:28An offside given against the number 10, Ernie Hunt.
04:40Ernie Hunt who scored here in this match last season with a tremendous free kick.
04:43Dempsey beating Rafferty in the air very well indeed.
05:00Cook back to Mulligan.
05:01Osgood versus Blockley and it falls for Garland.
05:05And it's got beauty now for Osgood.
05:07A chance for Chelsea.
05:09And Osgood has put Chelsea ahead.
05:12With under three minutes gone.
05:14The goal made for him by Chris Garland.
05:16And look at him hugging Garland.
05:18The new hero of Stamford Bridge.
05:21The goal made for the old hero, Peter Osgood.
05:24So exactly the start that Chris Garland would have wanted.
05:33That'll make him feel so much more at home.
05:35And Osgood making absolutely sure all the coolness in the world dribbling past Glazier.
05:40Ernie Hunt with a throw for Coventry.
05:59Right back on their heels already.
06:02Mick Coop looking for Hunt and finding him.
06:05Got a good start for Chelsea.
06:06And Hunt's crossed there.
06:07Rafferty going for it.
06:08And Rafferty is equalised within a minute.
06:13What a comeback by Coventry.
06:16The long cross coming over from the left.
06:19And Rafferty beating Dempsey in the air.
06:21To nod it firmly wide of goalkeeper Phillips.
06:32So two goals in the first four minutes.
06:351-1 we stand.
06:36What a beautiful start in the sunshine.
06:39And a throw to Coventry.
06:55Boyle.
06:56Nicely nodded on by Haussman to Osgood.
07:03Back to skipper Ron Harris.
07:06Osgood trying to duck in there with his header.
07:08Maguire to block it.
07:17Maguire to block it.
07:19Hunter nice little dummy there.
07:21O'Rourke to Maguire again.
07:23Pumping it first time.
07:24Trying to find Rafferty.
07:25Carr!
07:26Oh my goodness.
07:27Nearly a second one for Coventry.
07:29Into that side netting.
07:31Splitting that Chelsea defence.
07:32A little Willie Carr in on the blind side.
07:35Beautiful move by Coventry.
07:37Osgood winning that in the air.
07:41And Garland running on willingly.
07:43Parker covering in very closely indeed.
07:47Back to Haussman.
07:48Coop timing his challenge well.
07:57But Chelsea's throw.
08:01Mick Coop.
08:01Good throw.
08:02Good tackle by him.
08:03Now Garland.
08:04Back over his own head.
08:06And my goodness.
08:06That had Frazier a little bit worried from Chris Garland.
08:13Scored three goals this season for Bristol City.
08:17Cook.
08:19Mulligan.
08:24Pass that was intended for Garland without really giving him too much of a chance.
08:27But Lockley putting it into touch.
08:29And John Hollins with the throw for Chelsea.
08:39Wanting someone to come just a little closer.
08:43Garland.
08:44A back header.
08:45Osgood also with a backflip.
08:47And Cook finally to get away.
08:49Cook.
08:49To hammer it back.
08:50And he goes for the corner.
08:52Off Lockley.
08:59So Webb you see there going up.
09:04Dempsey is already up there.
09:06The number five.
09:08And Boyle with the corner.
09:11Dempsey back heading in.
09:12Osgood.
09:13Here it is.
09:14Yes it's given by Peter Osgood.
09:17Beautifully there.
09:19The corner by Boyle.
09:22The back header.
09:23By John Dempsey.
09:24And Osgood nodding it in off the post.
09:26To put Chelsea 2-1 ahead.
09:28With 17 minutes gone.
09:37So Osgood.
09:38With a new haircut.
09:40And a new outlook.
09:43Really has been chivvied by manager Dave Sexton.
09:46And showing all the effort in the world.
09:48Has scored both these Chelsea goals.
09:49To put them 2-1 into the lead.
09:57Maguire.
09:58To O'Rourke.
09:59To O'Rourke.
10:11Blockley.
10:13Good little piece of play there by Coventry.
10:15Maguire and Coop.
10:17Or rather Smith.
10:18But it didn't quite come off.
10:19Osgood.
10:20Osgood.
10:21Hausman.
10:22Osgood
10:41Hausmann
10:44played off for Boyle
10:45Hollins right up there, lovely flick of game
10:48with the outside of the boot to Hausmann
10:49Chelsea playing some good stuff at the moment
10:51as Osgood turns it towards the near post
10:53and this time Glazier is there
10:55faithfully guarding that near post
10:58as he had to do
10:59referee Morrissey having a quick word
11:06with Chris Garland
11:07Will Smith
11:10to Maguire
11:13Carr
11:20to Mortimer
11:23Hunt
11:27played for Mortimer again
11:29he's hit that across
11:29and my goodness
11:30just a fraction away from the foot
11:33of John O'Rourke the number seven
11:35but a fine
11:37incisive move there by Coventry
11:39that very nearly brought the equaliser again
11:41so it'll be Maguire with the corner
11:49jostling in that Chelsea penalty area
11:54comes to Mortimer
11:57played there for Carr
11:59lifting it in the air
11:59to see who'll go for it
12:01in fact it's Osgood right back there
12:03who got the head to it
12:04Coop
12:07Carr
12:08Coop again
12:11that time stopped by Mulligan
12:13and Garland couldn't keep it in
12:16Maguire
12:22to Mortimer
12:23two of these youngsters
12:24in the middle of the field
12:26for Coventry
12:26but going off Boyle
12:29for the Coventry throw
12:30Dennis Mortimer
12:32Carr
12:35that Hollins would not be denied
12:40and now it's Charlie Cook
12:41Osgood
12:42flicked outside for Garland
12:47and Garland let it go
12:48thinking that Mulligan was outside him
13:0825 minutes gone
13:09Chelsea leading by two goals to one
13:11Parker
13:29but straight to Mulligan
13:31Cook
13:34Hollins a little slow to get it away
13:37and Maguire was in quickly
13:38and now it's Willie Carr
13:39Mulligan again
13:41Osgood
13:41nice little ball there
13:44by Osgood for Boyle
13:45and now to Charlie Cook
13:46and Osgood has gone streaking
13:48into that Coventry penalty area
13:49and Coop there to get it away
13:51Garland going in just as hard
13:53and feet up
13:55given against Blockley
13:56I think
13:56with elbow as well
13:58and a free kick to Chelsea
14:00indirect free kick
14:06almost the identical position
14:08where Ernie Hunt in fact scored for Coventry
14:10against Chelsea last season
14:11there's the Coventry wall
14:13but this is an indirect free kick
14:17Hollins
14:18oh a great goal by Hollins
14:20oh a superb free kick by John Hollins
14:24that puts Chelsea 3-1 ahead
14:26touched to him by John Boyle
14:28and a real blaster there from Hollins
14:31no hope whatsoever for Bill Glazier
14:37and Chelsea 3-1 ahead
14:39so John Hollins who scored the winner here on Wednesday night
14:49against West Bromwich Albion
14:50gets another one here today against Coventry
14:53what a tremendous game this is turning out to be
15:00Willy Carr
15:04quite apart from the quality of the football
15:10the supreme quality of the goals that have been scored as well
15:13Maligan high
15:18into touch
15:20Hunt doing well there to shrug off Webb
15:30Webb is never easily shrugged off
15:32but now it's Cook
15:32Ernie Hunt
15:35Ernie Hunt again
15:38oh and he's got to be booked for that surely
15:44and into the book goes Paddy Mulligan
15:47deliberately handling the ball
15:50and he knew
15:51the punishment
15:53I would think
15:54as soon as he'd made contact with the ball
15:56here's the free kick from Smith
16:02and nodded on
16:04just past that post by O'Rourke
16:05with no more than a fraction in it
16:07here's Rafferty
16:10and a relief John Phillips
16:13Darlin jumping but beaten in the air
16:37and on the ground
16:37by Jeff Blockley
16:39Rafferty
16:41Hunt
16:42and Maguire a stern challenge but he won it
16:46but then it's Collins
16:47and now it'll be Phillips
16:49an accidental tumble there
17:01and spotted as such by the referee
17:03Hunt to Carr
17:06Coventry still coming forward for all there were
17:08still with a lot of confidence
17:09and there's John O'Rourke with a shot
17:11just passed again
17:13a really flashing move there by Coventry
17:19and O'Rourke no more than a foot wide
17:21with the defence spread eagled
17:25and John Phillips here absolutely beaten
17:27Hasman
17:42incredible to think that Chelsea
17:45without Hutchinson
17:47without Hudson
17:47without Baldwin
17:48and without Weller
17:49are still showing what a strong attacking force they are
17:53Charlie Cook with one of his famous drag backs towards Garland
17:57nodding it on
17:58and the linesman on this side flagging
18:00presumably for offside against Peter Osgood
18:03two goals to his name already this afternoon
18:11Webb
18:19Hollins
18:21Mulligan
18:22Cook
18:23neat and concise Dempsey
18:26the ball to Garland
18:28Osgood
18:28still Peter Osgood
18:30oh nicely there for Garland
18:32paid for Osgood again
18:34Garland with his
18:34flat on the ground
18:36still getting a header in
18:37but he didn't quite carry to Osgood
18:39but it's still Chelsea now with Peter Hausman
18:41Cook
18:44Garland again going for it
18:47just kicked off the top of his head
18:49already the signs that this man here
18:55the number eight Chris Garland
18:56and Peter Osgood
18:57are beginning to work up
18:58what could be a very potent understanding
19:00indeed for Chelsea
19:01John Boyle
19:15to Chris Garland
19:16Charlie Cook
19:18oh he couldn't keep it
19:21he should have done but he didn't
19:24so Coventry's throw
19:30and Willie Carr to take it
19:31ten minutes to go to half time
19:32Chelsea 3-1 ahead
19:34Hollins to Osgood
19:43played off beautifully there again
19:44to Hollins
19:45some tremendous stuff here now
19:47Hollins to Osgood
19:48back to Hollins again
19:51Hausman
19:53Garland
19:54and Hollins
19:55all waiting on this
19:55this side
19:56oh my goodness
19:57Glazier
19:57very nearly putting that
19:58into his own goal
19:59that's got to be a corner
20:01not very often
20:03that Bill Glazier
20:04misjudges the ball
20:04as badly as that in the air
20:06but he really did
20:06Dempsey of course
20:12is there
20:12the man who
20:13nodded on the
20:14ball for the second goal
20:15from the corner
20:16here's Boyle
20:16with that corner again
20:17again looking for Dempsey
20:18Hausman
20:20Hollins
20:23that'll be Coop
20:26back to Bill Glazier
20:28Peter Hausman
20:32Dennis Mortimer now
20:40for Coventry
20:40letting it go into touch
20:41Coventry's throw
20:42Coop
20:47Rafferty
20:49nodded on for Hunt
20:50but Dempsey
20:51was there first
20:52Coventry's throw
20:54and Young
20:58Dennis Mortimer
20:59to take it
21:00Hunt
21:02back over his own head
21:04Cardaloo
21:05stretch for it
21:06Rafferty
21:06to try and breast it down
21:08O'Rourke is right there
21:10as well
21:11back over his own head
21:11again
21:12and Rafferty going in
21:13just over that Chelsea bar
21:14a lot of skill
21:19and a lot of spirit
21:20too in that Coventry move
21:21Hunt
21:24Rafferty here
21:25and O'Rourke
21:26all playing a full part
21:28in it
21:28Houseman off in chase
21:34but Mick Coop
21:34very experienced
21:35and very versatile
21:36sticking to him well there
21:38Mortimer to Coop again
21:40Mortimer
21:42Hunt
21:44taken from behind
21:47by Webb
21:47and a free kick
21:50to Coventry
21:51Hunt taking it quickly
21:52Rafferty now
21:53with a great chance
21:54for Coventry
21:54and there it is
21:55a rather
21:55O'Rourke
21:56and O'Rourke
21:57puts it
21:58the second goal
21:59in for Coventry
22:00a quickly taken free kick
22:07and how expert
22:07Coventry are
22:08at those free kicks
22:09by Ernie Hunt
22:10O'Rourke
22:11fastening on it
22:12and giving Phillips
22:14no chance
22:15so Coventry
22:24said he must feel
22:25a little happier
22:25Noel Cantwell
22:26in the centre there
22:26the manager
22:27back in this game
22:29and O'Rourke
22:38Maguire to Carr
22:43Carr losing out
22:44on it though
22:45Carr
22:52to O'Rourke
22:53well it was as well
22:56for Coventry
22:57he didn't do that
22:57a moment ago
22:58Osgood
23:01Carr
23:03Smith
23:05and now Hunt
23:14played a game
23:15for Mortimer
23:16now here's another
23:16chance for Coventry
23:17and they've equalised
23:18Dennis Mortimer
23:20there it is
23:23the evidence
23:23right in the back
23:24of that goal
23:24another incisive attack
23:26and Mortimer
23:27getting in very quickly
23:29on it
23:30to toe poke it
23:31past John Phillips
23:32well two minutes ago
23:40we were saying
23:41quite blithely
23:42that it looked as though
23:43Chelsea were on their way
23:44to a third successive win
23:45and suddenly two goals
23:47in the space of a minute
23:47and Coventry
23:49are right back on it
23:493-3
23:51what an incredible game
23:53Webb Carr
24:03but it certainly seems
24:08to have stung the Chelsea
24:09crowd to silence
24:10Mulligan
24:22Osgood
24:24Boyle
24:28and now Harris
24:32and Garland
24:34looked as though
24:35he was pushed
24:35as he went in
24:36on that one
24:36but maybe the referee
24:37thought that he was
24:38doing his share
24:38of the pushing as well
24:39so there goes
24:44the whistle
24:44for half time
24:45certainly not a day
24:46for goalkeepers
24:46John Phillips
24:47who's conceded 3
24:48and Bobby Parker
24:51getting a bit of
24:51treatment as well
24:52so we've seen
24:57John Phillips
24:57the goalkeeper
24:58at one end
24:58Bill Glazier
24:59the goalkeeper
25:00at the other end
25:006 goals in this
25:01first half
25:02and still to come
25:03for you
25:03a lot more action
25:04on the big match
25:05today with West Bromwich
25:06Albion against Arsenal
25:07Hull against Blackpool
25:09and the second half
25:10of this exciting game
25:11as well
25:11the half time score
25:12is Chelsea 3
25:14Coventry 3
25:16and we'll be back
25:17with you in just
25:18a couple of minutes
25:18and judging from what
25:31went on in the first half
25:32these press photographers
25:33aren't going to be
25:33disappointed in this
25:35second half
25:353-3 remember
25:36at half time
25:37and Coventry now
25:38preparing to kick off
25:39at the start of the
25:40second half
25:40and so much respect
25:41you've got to have
25:42for this young Coventry
25:43side when you consider
25:44that Parker
25:44Mortimer and Maguire
25:45in the middle of the field
25:47are still only teenagers
25:48with Willy Carr
25:49only 20
25:50surely the best young
25:51side in the first division
25:52and now it's Coop
25:55to Rafferty
25:57Webb following him out
25:59and winning the ball
26:00Houseman
26:01Parker
26:05and O'Rourke
26:08just nodding that one on
26:10but nobody behind him
26:11and John Phillips for Chelsea
26:12so Bobby Parker
26:28with the throw
26:29to his skipper
26:30Jeff Blockley
26:31Maguire
26:34Osgood chasing around
26:38like a man possessed
26:39but Coop getting it away
26:40Dempsey
26:42time enough to do
26:44something with it
26:45but in fact
26:45can only turn it into touch
26:46Maguire making a quick run
26:53there from the middle
26:53of the field
26:54for Coventry
26:54to Mortimer
26:55now turning it into
26:56that Chelsea penalty area
26:57O'Rourke is lifting himself
26:58for it
26:58so too was Rafferty
26:59and it'll be Mulligan
27:00now to bring it away
27:01for Chelsea
27:02chased by Willie Carr
27:04but finding Cook
27:05Mulligan again
27:07the crowd
27:08finding his voice
27:09Cook
27:10but Osgood and Garland
27:14as target men
27:15in the middle there
27:15Osgood going for this one
27:17and will he go in
27:18no
27:19it's finally kicked away
27:20by Mick Cooper
27:21across that line
27:22Garland somewhere
27:23in the back of that net
27:24with Bobby Parker
27:26going off a Coventry defender
27:31so the corner
27:35coming across now
27:36and it'll be Boyle
27:37to take it
27:38anxious faces now
27:39in that Coventry penalty area
27:41looking around
27:42for men to pick up
27:43here comes the corner
27:44Glazier going for it
27:45but in fact
27:45it's nodded away
27:46by O'Rourke
27:47Boyle again
27:49who can lift it in
27:50once more
27:50towards the near post
27:51as Osgood goes in
27:52and Glazier
27:53really had to grab
27:53at that one
27:54Willie Carr
28:00played on nicely
28:03there by Carr
28:03to O'Rourke
28:04and still O'Rourke
28:05with a thundering shot
28:06for this ride
28:07to think that
28:12a couple of three weeks ago
28:13it looked as though
28:14Coventry were prepared
28:14to let this man go
28:15and he nearly went
28:16to Queen's Park Rangers
28:17he nearly went to Millwall
28:18he nearly went to
28:19Sheffield Wednesday
28:19but now he's staying put
28:21he scored one goal today
28:22and wasn't so far
28:23off the mark there
28:24John O'Rourke
28:25Parker
28:32oh a little chip there
28:34going straight
28:35to the head of Cook
28:36and Parker recovering
28:37quickly
28:38and well
28:39young Bobby Parker
28:44the man they keep
28:44lightening to
28:45Bobby Moore
28:46at that age
28:46Haussmann
28:50Boyle
28:51Haussmann
28:55and Ernie Hunt
28:58Dennis Mortimer
29:00to Maguire
29:02got Carr over
29:04on his left
29:05and that's the ball
29:05that's aimed
29:05towards Willie Carr
29:06Webb
29:08just getting himself
29:10out of trouble there
29:10and Cook
29:12a little too slow
29:12to react
29:13and now Carr
29:14to flick it on there
29:15just passed
29:16by O'Rourke
29:17and Chelsea
29:20were all over the place
29:21then
29:21really beginning
29:22with a rather slack
29:24piece of play
29:24by Charlie Cook
29:25he gave Coventry
29:30possession
29:30and they really
29:31nearly punished him
29:32to the full
29:33for it
29:34Mulligan
29:38Osgood
29:40turned in very nicely
29:42there by Osgood
29:43for Cook
29:43Hollins
29:47Boyle
29:53to hit one
29:54and almost
29:56nonchalantly
29:56pushed over
29:57by Bill Glazier
29:58but Boyle
29:59really hit that one
29:59here's Glazier
30:00and here's Boyle
30:01and a corner
30:03Glazier
30:06who was somewhat
30:06four or five yards
30:07off his line
30:08just stuck up
30:09that one hand
30:10really looked like
30:12a practice game
30:13but my goodness
30:14he's down to it now
30:15Dempsey
30:16and away come Coventry
30:21with Billy Rafferty
30:22he's got Hunt up
30:22with him
30:23and on the left
30:23he's got
30:24Willie Carr
30:24really streaking away
30:25promising looking break
30:27and oh
30:27he played it the wrong way
30:28he had to play it to Carr
30:30who was unmarked
30:31on the left
30:31and now it's Coventry
30:32again with Smith
30:33O'Rourke
30:37played nicely
30:38for John O'Rourke
30:39across that goal
30:40and Phillips
30:40is down
30:41at the feet of Rafferty
30:42Chelsea's free kick
31:00played there for Cook
31:08but turned in gently
31:11ever so gently
31:12for Bill Glazier
31:13no problem at all
31:17Boyle
31:24Garland
31:25Osgood just a little
31:28too tentative there
31:29chasing there
31:32after Mortimer
31:32Rafferty
31:35good play there
31:40by Coventry
31:40between Rafferty
31:41and Mortimer
31:42it sends Mortimer away
31:43Carr has gone
31:44streaking into the middle
31:45I don't think Mortimer
31:45has seen him yet
31:46oh a nice little play
31:47there by Hunt
31:48Mortimer going on
31:49and finally it's Webb
31:50at the very last ditch
31:52for Chelsea
31:52who gets a foot there
31:53and gets it away
31:54that really was
31:58a brilliant move
31:58again by Coventry
31:59though
32:00this young side
32:01with such a
32:02tremendous future
32:03and of course
32:08to what they've got
32:09today
32:09you can add
32:10Chris Chilton
32:11when he's fit
32:11their new signing
32:13from Hull
32:14Noel Cantwell
32:18the man in the middle
32:18there who's done
32:19so much to get
32:20Coventry going
32:20in the first division
32:21after one or two
32:23very sticky seasons
32:23when they first got up
32:25Garland to try and
32:30nod it down
32:30for someone around him
32:31but in fact
32:32it was a Coventry player
32:33and now it's
32:33Willie Carr
32:34to leave it to
32:35Wilf Smith
32:35Mulligan
32:39we've had nearly
32:46a minute of injury
32:47time
32:47and referee
32:50Morris has just
32:51taken one
32:52watch out of his
32:53top pocket
32:54had a good look
32:55at it
32:55confirm how close
32:58we are to the finish
32:59and Parker
32:59I would think
33:00will tuck that
33:00one back to
33:01Glazier
33:01looking hard
33:03at his watch
33:04again
33:04six goals
33:05in the first half
33:06it seems
33:06we're unlikely
33:07to get
33:07any in the second
33:08half
33:09and indeed
33:09we're not
33:09because there
33:10goes the final
33:11whistle
33:11but a fine game
33:13at Stamford Bridge
33:13with Peter Osgood
33:14having scored
33:15two of those
33:15Chelsea goals
33:16the other one
33:17coming from
33:18Johnny Hollins
33:18that tremendous
33:19free kick
33:19Rafferty O'Rourke
33:20and Mortimer
33:21the three
33:22for Coventry
33:23so the final score
33:24here at Stamford Bridge
33:25as Chris Garland
33:26leaves the pitch
33:27after his first game
33:28a quiet game
33:29in fact
33:29for Chelsea
33:30feeling his way
33:31most of the time
33:32of Chelsea
33:33three
33:34Coventry City
33:35three
33:36well certainly
33:47no complaints
33:48about the
33:48entertainment value
33:49at Stamford Bridge
33:50yesterday
33:50and still a good deal
33:51to entertain you
33:52on our programme
33:52today
33:52with highlights
33:53of West Bromwich
33:54Albain against Arsenal
33:54and that top
33:55second division game
33:56between Hull
33:57and Blackpool
33:57I suppose a lot of people
33:58went to Stamford Bridge
33:59yesterday to take
34:00a look at Chris Garland
34:01and he did
34:01perfectly well
34:02but most I'll bet
34:03went away talking
34:04about the new
34:05Peter Osgood
34:06his difference
34:06is settled
34:07and it seems
34:07with a new appetite
34:08for the game
34:09as well
34:09after the game
34:10I spoke to Peter
34:11Osgood about it
34:12it always helps
34:12when you have a couple
34:13of wins under your belt
34:14you know
34:14we had two wins
34:15on the top
34:15one away from home
34:17which is always pleasing
34:18and then
34:18today we've drawn
34:20three each
34:20you know
34:21but
34:21you know
34:22things have sort of
34:23cooled down a bit now
34:24your attitude
34:25if I may say so
34:25seems to have changed
34:26a tremendous amount
34:27well
34:28I think I was just
34:30trying to show everybody
34:30that Dave was wrong
34:31and he was wrong
34:32you know
34:33but
34:33he was probably right
34:35and it's probably
34:35helped me a lot
34:35you know
34:36and the goals have come
34:37more freely now
34:38you know
34:38and
34:39this is probably
34:40what I wanted
34:40you feel that Dave
34:41was right now
34:42do you
34:42well
34:42I didn't say too much
34:44when he had this
34:46go at me
34:46you know
34:46so
34:46I sort of sat back
34:48and thought about it
34:49and thought the best
34:50thing to do
34:50is just get on with it
34:51and see if I can
34:52pop in a few goals
34:53do you consciously feel
34:54though that now
34:54you're putting more effort
34:55into it for Chelsea
34:56well I seem to be
34:58enjoying the game
34:58more now
34:59you know
34:59and I think
34:59if I'm enjoying the game
35:00then obviously
35:01I'm working much harder
35:02and getting more of the ball
35:02against West Brom
35:04on Wednesday night
35:05you know
35:05it was a bad game for me
35:06I didn't feel
35:07you know
35:07too good again
35:08I didn't see a lot
35:09of the ball
35:09but today was
35:10a big difference
35:11your two goals today
35:12yes
35:13the first one
35:14Chrissie Garland
35:15the new boy made
35:16you know
35:16and thought he did very well
35:17he was a very strong lad
35:18you know
35:18and he helped me out tremendously
35:19the second one
35:21was as simple
35:22you know
35:22anybody could have scored him
35:23yeah
35:23but it's always
35:24you know
35:24pleasing to score
35:25goals at home
35:26you know
35:26in front of your home crowd
35:27you mentioned Chris Garland
35:28and I think a lot of people
35:29see him as another
35:30Ian Hutchinson
35:30he's a much slighter boy
35:31of course
35:32but do you see yourself
35:32working that sort of
35:33understanding with him
35:34yes
35:34you know
35:35as I said
35:36he's strong
35:36and he's good
35:37and courageous
35:38you know
35:38and I think
35:39after a couple of games
35:40he'll settle down
35:41and really be a good player
35:42so a Peter Osgood view
35:44on his new partner
35:45Chris Garland
35:46now let's get a
35:46Jimmy Hill view
35:47on Peter Osgood
35:48and on the game in general
35:50well in fact
35:50Peter Osgood had a splendid game
35:51yesterday
35:52I must say
35:52it was a pleasure to see
35:53obviously Dave Sexton's
35:55startling and very decisive action
35:57has had the desired effect
35:58more than anything else
35:59of course
36:00what he's done
36:00he's made 35,000 people
36:02conscious of what he wants
36:04from Peter Osgood
36:04and they're watching too
36:06as well as the manager
36:07and they applauded
36:08the new Osgood
36:09that you see here
36:10the ball goes over his head
36:11and he turns
36:12and chases a ball
36:13that for me
36:14a few months ago anyway
36:15he would have judged out
36:16right from the start
36:17and stood still
36:18that's the new Peter Osgood
36:19it's wonderful to see
36:21all that skill
36:22plus extra enthusiasm
36:23and the other good thing
36:26about his performance yesterday
36:27was how well he linked up
36:28with Chris Garland
36:29a nerve-wracking time
36:30for the lad
36:31but I was very pleased
36:32with the way in which
36:33he played the ball quickly
36:34he seemed to strike up
36:35and understand him with Ossie
36:36very well from the start
36:38of the game
36:38and was always ready
36:40to speed it up
36:41here he lays the ball
36:42over his head
36:43into the goal now
36:43hoping that another fall
36:45was coming in there
36:46but the speed of his brain
36:47works well
36:48just watch this 1-2 movement
36:50between Osgood and him
36:52and see how well
36:54they struck up
36:55this understanding
36:55there's one first time ball
36:57Osgood wins the ball there
36:59now watch the 1-2 play
37:00first time
37:00nicely laid in his path
37:02and it's only good reading
37:03and interception
37:04by the full back there
37:05that stopped a chance
37:06of another goal
37:07and of course it was
37:08the goal himself
37:08Osgood's first goal
37:10that he made
37:10by his speed of thought
37:12he beat the offside trap
37:13by playing the ball
37:14first time
37:15as it comes up here
37:16Osgood gets it down
37:17beautifully there
37:18and now watch the
37:20first time ball
37:20onside
37:21without any question
37:22but if he'd held it
37:23for a moment
37:24Peter would have been
37:25offside
37:25and look at the way
37:26the skilful way
37:27in which he evades
37:28Glazier
37:28and tucks the ball home
37:30smooth as silk
37:32Peter Osgood
37:33scoring at his best
37:34but I wish I could have
37:36been as happy
37:36about Chelsea's defence
37:38and no question
37:39about it yesterday
37:39I've never seen a match
37:41where there were so many
37:42open goals at both ends
37:43and it's Chelsea
37:44we're worrying about
37:45at the moment
37:45I'm sure it's Chelsea
37:46Dave Sexton's worrying about
37:47and we'll just look
37:48at two examples
37:49two goals that came
37:50against them
37:50and how really
37:51extraordinary they were
37:52the first one
37:53rather interesting
37:54because David Webb
37:56commits a foul there
37:57and I think he thinks
37:58there's a possibility
37:59that he might get
37:59his name taken
38:00so what does he do
38:01he pats Ernie Hunt
38:02apologises to the referee
38:04but doesn't get back
38:05into position
38:06and there's the space
38:07that O'Rourke sees
38:08makes good use of it
38:11and happily scores
38:12against his old team
38:13and the second goal
38:15the one that Mortimer
38:16scored was even more
38:17incredible
38:18in the amount of space
38:19that suddenly appeared
38:20for Coventry
38:21we see the whole
38:22side of a pitch
38:23unguarded by
38:24Chelsea defenders
38:25it's Ernie Hunt
38:28who really spots it
38:29there's a first time ball
38:30and another beautifully
38:31laid first time ball
38:32from Hunt
38:33to Mortimer
38:34steaming into that space
38:35and as you can see
38:36Dempsey's cutting across
38:37from the penalty spot
38:38but you can't leave
38:39your penalty area
38:40as uncrowded as that
38:42and hope to do well
38:43in the first division
38:43that's the extraordinary thing
38:45they're the problems
38:45that Dave Sexton's got
38:46in defence
38:47but one other
38:48the mystery of the
38:48King's Road
38:49to me why is it
38:50that Chelsea
38:51who when they're away
38:52fight so strongly
38:53and come back
38:54and win games
38:54and draw them
38:55in the second half
38:56but when they're at home
38:57their best performances
38:58nearly always occur
38:59before half time
39:00it's the mystery
39:01that Dave Sexton's
39:02got to solve
39:02maybe it's just
39:03the King's Road here
39:04so there we are
39:05a mystery from Jimmy Hill
39:06as he cast his eye
39:07over Chelsea
39:08and now we have
39:08some more action for you
39:09and it features briefly
39:10the team now
39:11at the top of the
39:11second division
39:12Blackpool
39:13yesterday though
39:13they went to Hull
39:14and they were beaten
39:15by a single goal
39:15that's what we're
39:16going to show you now
39:17as we take up the
39:17pictures from
39:18Yorkshire television
39:19and the commentator
39:20is Keith Macklin
39:21Green
39:23no one up for that
39:24Wilkinson
39:26again deflected
39:29on helpfully
39:29for Hull City
39:30this is Wagstaff
39:31hustled off it
39:33by Hatton
39:34Lord for Hull City
39:46Wagstaff
39:49good running by De Vries
39:52and a fine cross
39:54what a wonderful goal
39:57by Pearson
39:58another goal
39:59for this boy
40:00yes a good enough
40:24winning header there
40:25for Hull
40:25but a black mark
40:26surely against the
40:27Blackpool goalkeeper
40:28who came but didn't
40:28get within a yard
40:29of the ball
40:29and in fact left
40:30his goal completely
40:31unattended
40:32I suppose you could
40:32say that they'll need
40:33better goalkeeping
40:34than that
40:34to keep Blackpool
40:35where they are now
40:36at the top of the
40:37second division
40:37now let's have some more action
40:49as we bring you
40:49Don Howe's new team
40:51West Bromwich Albion
40:52against Don Howe's
40:53old team
40:53Arsenal
40:54a match with a lot on it
40:55at the Hawthorns
40:56yesterday
40:57as we take it up
40:57with pictures from ATV
40:59and commentator
41:00Hugh Johns
41:01Wild jump
41:08Hartford
41:13winning strongly
41:13two Scots
41:15from
41:15Fari Scotsman
41:16bundling up together
41:17Asa Hartford
41:18and Graham
41:19Hartford's going
41:21in the book
41:22and for Asa Hartford
41:28that's his second
41:29booking of the season
41:30with Jordy Armstrong
41:33Brown
41:41working
41:41the defence
41:42out of trouble
41:43but they'd rather
41:43see him up front
41:44banging a couple
41:45of goals in
41:46Roberts
41:49given a free head
41:50Bob McNabb
41:53and the crowd
42:03very strangely
42:04very silent
42:04Bob McNabb
42:10easy one
42:19for Story
42:19Radford
42:22neat
42:22McNabb
42:23Astle back
42:24to challenge
42:25Wild
42:29McClintock
42:32judging the ball
42:33well in the air
42:33swerved quite a lot
42:34Alvin
42:47not finding it easy
42:49to break through
42:49the Arsenal defence
42:51at the moment
42:51making too many
42:54mistakes
42:55this is Graham
42:57for Arsenal
42:57while
43:00sticking to his work
43:02particularly well
43:02in the air
43:03Cantelo
43:06down for Hartford
43:07Tony Brown
43:09will never catch that
43:10bright sunlight
43:12tell that by the
43:13blackness of those
43:15shadows down there
43:16Armstrong
43:19far side of the field
43:22he's looking for
43:23Rice
43:23and Rice is
43:24covered up
43:24now Rice is
43:26open again
43:26now
43:26Radford's run
43:31well on the
43:31right side
43:32the ball
43:32not aimed
43:33directly to him
43:34John Roberts
43:38galloping across
43:38there
43:39good ball
43:54from
43:55Bradford
43:56here's Kennedy
43:57chip through
44:00and Story's run
44:01beautifully
44:01and a fine bit
44:03of goalkeeping
44:04by Coombs
44:05who practically
44:05whipped that
44:06off Story's boot
44:07as it looked
44:07as though
44:07he was going
44:08to score
44:08a very simple
44:09goal
44:09and what a
44:10magnificent bit
44:11of running
44:11by Peter Story
44:12and where was
44:14the Alvin
44:14defence to
44:15let him
44:15come through
44:16so easily
44:16great bit
44:19of goalkeeping
44:19though
44:19by Jim Coombs
44:21came off
44:23his line
44:23did everything
44:24neat and tidy
44:25corner
44:26Armstrong
44:26oh
44:29what a shot
44:30from John
44:31Roberts
44:31John Roberts
44:33well
44:37well
44:37well
44:37that's
44:37one
44:38nothing
44:38Arsenal
44:38John Roberts
44:39the scorer
44:40Roberts
44:43surprising
44:44again
44:45the Alvin
44:45defence
44:45who just
44:46stood there
44:46and let it
44:47happen
44:47I doubt
44:47whether Jim Coombs
44:48saw very much
44:49of that ball
44:49until it was
44:50right in the back
44:51of the net
44:51so the one goal
44:54that was enough
44:54to give Arsenal
44:55a victory
44:56at West Bromwich
44:57Albuke
44:57we leave you
44:57with a goal
44:58the John
44:58Hollins free kick
44:59yesterday
44:59I don't know
44:59somehow the big
45:00match does
45:00something for John
45:01Hollins
45:01he won our
45:02Golden Goals
45:02competition last
45:03season
45:03and then he whacked
45:04in this tremendous
45:05free kick
45:05yesterday
45:06noticeable with the
45:07referees insisting
45:08that the wall get
45:09back ten yards
45:10it gives teams a better
45:11chance to score from
45:12this sort of free kick
45:13but this is an
45:14indirect free kick
45:15Hollins
45:16oh a great goal
45:18by Hollins
45:19oh a superb
45:21free kick
45:51you
