00:00Malcolm Allison and David Swindlehurst, cup heroes of Crystal Palace.
00:22See how they did it today on the big match.
00:24Yes, our main feature today will be that stirring fourth round FA Cup tie that has captured all the headlines.
00:30Leeds United against Crystal Palace and a thrilling 20-minute chunk of that will be coming up a bit later in the programme.
00:36With, as I've said, Malcolm Allison and David Swindlehurst here in the studio to talk about it.
00:40And what supporting matches we've got today?
00:42The game that was billed as the tie of the round, Derby County against Liverpool.
00:46And the match that had a great final flourish to it, Charlton Athletic against Portsmouth.
00:50And indeed, that's the game we start with today, as our cameras nose their way up the Charlton Tunnel to catch Keith Peacock leading out the Charlton team.
01:05So, back from the noise of the cup-tied crowd, the entry of Portsmouth now, led out by the
01:32former Charlton player, Paul Wendt.
01:35The valley looking more like the old days when these two clubs, then giants of the
02:05First Division, have been known to fill the place with over 60,000 fans.
02:08Today, the crowd is a respectable 26,000, many of them up from Portsmouth for this fourth
02:13round FA Cup tie between Charlton Athletic and Portsmouth.
02:17The team news is that Charlton continue to give a chance in attack to their tall number
02:20nine, George Hope, with David Young still named as substitute.
02:24As for Portsmouth, unchanged, but in their side, two players who've been on a cup-winning
02:28side at Wembley.
02:29The number two, Chris Lawler, formerly of Liverpool.
02:31The number nine, George Graham, who, of course, was in the Arsenal double side.
02:36The referee for this cup tie, Alfred Gray of Yarmouth.
02:39And now the crowd, with his mascots and all, are waiting for the start of this cup tie.
02:43So Charlton kick-off in red shirts and white shorts, attacking the goal to our white.
02:52Portsmouth in the white shirts and blue shorts.
02:56Portsmouth have already been here this season on Boxing Day and scored a good 3-1 victory.
03:01Hales playing it to Hunt and hit him first time by Flanagan, but wide of the goal.
03:06And a goal kick to Portsmouth.
03:11Portsmouth who had a superb victory over Birmingham in the last round.
03:14Charlton against Sheffield Wednesday.
03:22Do you only think these Portsmouth fans who have arrived late have obviously been held up
03:26on the way, or...
03:28I don't think that the journey has taken longer than they thought.
03:31Oh, what a bad kick.
03:33And Hales has hit him and he's hit it wide.
03:34Well, that could have been a very, very costly mistake by Graham Lloyd.
03:41Very bad kick indeed, straight to Hales.
03:43And if anything, Hales seemed to hurry it.
03:45Might have had a little more time.
03:49I guess.
03:52Oh, he's beaten up.
03:54Well, he beat one man very easily for Curtis, but he couldn't beat people.
03:59Here's Curtis.
04:00Curtis.
04:00Curtis.
04:04Now, George Graham.
04:21Norman Piper.
04:23Graham again.
04:25Charlton have got a lot of men back.
04:27They get them back very quickly.
04:28They only have two in midfield.
04:31The line with four men up front, but they do get their players back very quickly when
04:35Portsmouth come forward.
04:37Now, how quickly can Hales go forward himself?
04:39Now, number three to one.
04:41Paul Wentz is closest to a number five.
04:43He's beaten Wentz.
04:44He's brought down a penalty.
04:46What is he doing?
04:47Well, there was no doubt in the referee's mind.
04:53He had a quick look at the linesman.
04:56And gave that penalty.
05:01When Hope was brought down right on the edge of the area.
05:05Now, Bob Curtis is the man who takes the penalties for Charlton.
05:09A long time out with injury this season.
05:12But, in fact, he hasn't scored this season.
05:17But, here's a moment for him.
05:21Well, Paul Wentz on the other side.
05:23I can't think what he's doing.
05:24He's actually inside the penalty area.
05:28Has to go outside the area.
05:32Well, I think the nice one might be saying that the infringement was outside the area, possibly.
05:38Maybe we haven't got a penalty.
05:39No, that was a false alarm as well.
05:46Although, I fancy that is maybe what they were talking about.
05:50And Portsmouth still protesting to the linesman.
05:52The linesman's now walking away.
05:58They're still protesting for that linesman.
06:00Paul Cahill there.
06:02Well, was that inside the area or was it out?
06:05There really is a point to investigate.
06:07The referee is satisfied that it was inside.
06:10And it's Curtis for Charlton against Lloyd for Portsmouth.
06:14And he scored!
06:21Curtis, a really extra penalty kicker.
06:24Picked back firmly wide of Lloyd.
06:26To score his last goal of the season.
06:29To give Charlton an important lead.
06:33And so, with 26 minutes gone, Charlton won Portsmouth 0.
06:37And Portsmouth still complaining that infringement was outside the penalty area.
06:41Foolishета.
06:42Oh, he's finished.
06:43Oh, if you can get his shot data, which he can.
06:46And, in fact, Graham Tuck just got his finger tip to it to turn it over.
07:02In fact, Graham Tuck just got his finger tip to it to turn it over.
07:03Turn it over.
07:05Get his tip very well there.
07:07Taking on his man.
07:08Jinking and jinking.
07:08And then got half a yard to get in the shot.
07:11Tough getting a finger tip to it.
07:23Roberts.
07:24Did very well there.
07:26Tricking current.
07:27And what a good ball here to Piper.
07:29Now can Piper make something of this?
07:31Well, it took a good save.
07:34And then in the end,
07:35they very nearly made something of it
07:36through Bobby McGuinness.
07:40Piper doing very well there.
07:42Got in his shot.
07:43A good save by Tutt.
07:45And McGuinness very nearly got in there
07:47to finish it off.
07:48Now a fourth for Charlton.
07:50And a chance for them maybe to make a break.
07:52Stopped by Roberts, in fact.
07:55Eames.
07:56Finding mellows.
07:59Reynolds calling for it and getting it.
08:01Hitting it left footy to George Graham.
08:02A little touch there towards McGuinness.
08:06Even then his shot wouldn't go.
08:07Goalwards.
08:10Reynolds again.
08:15They've got quite a point coming forward
08:16once or twice, Portsmouth.
08:17Now they've got a chance again.
08:22Reynolds.
08:25Eames, who's got mellows up in support as well.
08:28Probably playing a short run to him.
08:30Yes, here it is.
08:32Deep across towards Norman Piper.
08:34Having a very good game indeed.
08:36Roberts.
08:36Ginnis.
08:42Ginnis.
08:42Not the biggest of men.
08:43Piper.
08:45Well, the net was hoisted in.
08:48Ginnis got up.
08:49Nodded it down for Piper.
08:52Had to hit it first time.
08:55So Andy Nelson, pretty well satisfied so far
08:57with the way it's going.
08:58Maybe a fortunate penalty,
08:59but a lead for all that.
09:00Hunt.
09:06Hayles is after this one.
09:08The point is there.
09:11Hayles did very well there.
09:13That's got to be a goal.
09:15Well, Flanagan missed that one.
09:18What a miss.
09:20David Young, the substitute.
09:22There is dust.
09:23Can't believe it,
09:24because Hayles did so well.
09:26It seemed no way that he could get faster, West.
09:28But he did, and he got it across the face of that goal.
09:32Flanagan was steaming in.
09:36And that really was a bad loss.
09:41As the wrestle goes for half-time,
09:44not a particularly good one for Portsmouth.
09:46They've shown some nice touches.
09:47They've had a penalty given against them,
09:50which they felt themselves was a harsh one.
09:53Scored by Bobby Curtis on the right
09:54of those two Charlton players coming in.
09:57A half-time score.
09:58Charlton one, Portsmouth nil.
10:11So, welcome back to the valley.
10:14The Charlton leading by one goal to nil against Portsmouth,
10:16and Portsmouth now attacking the goal to our right in white.
10:20Now, here's McGuinness.
10:21Portsmouth.
10:27Little kick.
10:33William McGuinness, former Motherwell player.
10:36Actually got the winner against Birmingham City in the last round.
10:38Went with a hitter, only as far as Portsmouth.
10:47Now, brought down by Mellows.
10:50Free kick.
10:51Now, it's with P. Corbin.
11:05Offside.
11:10Now, it's dumped rather heavily there.
11:12It's off the field, and so the game, I presume, will go on.
11:22If we're not concerned with that so much as with something concerning the Portsmouth goalkeeper,
11:27Clare M. Lloyd.
11:42Roberts.
11:43Reynolds.
11:45Hyper.
11:46Peacock.
11:47Play on.
11:51Play on again.
11:53Advantage played well there by referee Gray.
11:56As Hunt finds Hales.
11:58Now, here's Hope.
12:00It's time for Fanagon.
12:01This looks better for Charlton until...
12:04Hayley comes to nothing, but it might have a chance to revive itself
12:07as Fanagon turns the ball in once more.
12:09Hope is there.
12:13But where is the ball?
12:15Well, that was remarkable.
12:17It's with Powell now.
12:18The game's still going on.
12:22Oh, good.
12:22No play of play there.
12:24No penalty.
12:27A dive set referee Gray.
12:30I've got to say, my view of it for the Wales.
12:32Long way further than the referee,
12:34but that looked more like a penalty than the first one,
12:36the one that was given.
12:40Right track of Hale.
12:41Now, straining to get there,
12:43but went getting there first and finding Mellows for Portsmouth.
12:45The long ball towards Piper.
12:47And now Eames might get in here,
12:48but Warman is after him,
12:50and the whistle had gone again.
12:53He really hasn't played the advantage very well this afternoon, Mr. Gray.
12:57He's so hot on the whistle,
12:59so quick on it,
12:59that the game really has had few opportunities of flowing.
13:07Maybe that's his style of refereeing,
13:08and he's given a free kick to Portsmouth though.
13:12Paul Wendt getting up mightily there,
13:14and Tot gathering the ball from under his crossbar.
13:16He's got it.
13:35Offside.
13:37Point.
13:55High towards Piper.
13:58Curtis getting it away.
13:59Here's Reynolds.
14:11Peacock heading it away.
14:13Now here's Fanagot.
14:15Could be a good break, this for Charlton,
14:16but Lorna was in the way.
14:17No handball, said the referee.
14:20Roberts instead can start something for Portsmouth.
14:24Turled in the way towards George Graham.
14:26Nodded in again towards Piper.
14:27Goal!
14:281-1.
14:32With a little over two minutes left.
14:45Well, out of nothing,
14:46Portsmouth have saved this cup tie.
14:48As that ball went sailing into the Charlton penalty area,
14:54it needed just a delicate flick there by Norman Piper,
14:58one of Portsmouth's outstanding players.
15:00Back of the net.
15:011-1.
15:03Charlton won.
15:05Portsmouth won.
15:07Norman Piper, their top scorer,
15:08now taking his tally to seven.
15:12Could well have got the replay now for Portsmouth.
15:14Well, the game is going on
15:18while a fan is being escorted off the field,
15:20festooned in Union Jacks.
15:26And Portsmouth in no hurry now.
15:39Portsmouth has had a stormy game
15:41at the heart of defence
15:42for Portsmouth.
15:43Prepared to take all the time of the world
15:46and they don't even worry anymore
15:47because the match is over.
15:49And Portsmouth with that lost,
15:51large equaliser
15:52have earned themselves a replay of Portsmouth.
15:57Norman Piper at the end.
15:58Number eight was the man who scored it.
16:01After Bob Curtis
16:02had scored
16:03from a penalty spot for Charlton
16:05in the first half.
16:06in many ways a disappointing cup tie
16:11but no doubt
16:12the smiles are beyond the faces
16:14of the Portsmouth players
16:15who've earned themselves that replay.
16:19Showed one or two good little touches
16:21for so long in the game
16:22without ever really showing
16:24any great finishing power
16:25until it really mattered
16:26right at the end.
16:32So as the players go back
16:33to the dressing room
16:34and the supporters here
16:38I think that gesture there
16:41tells everything about Portsmouth.
16:42And the Pompey fans
16:45are delighted
16:46with that late equaliser.
16:48We have a final scoreline
16:49at the Valley today
16:50in this fourth round cup tie.
16:52Charlton won,
16:53Portsmouth won
16:54and they'll have to play
16:55all over again.
16:57And indeed they play
16:58all over again
16:58at Fratton Park on Tuesday
17:00where Portsmouth are expecting
17:01a crowd of 30,000.
17:02It really will be like
17:03old times there.
17:04But two talking points
17:05from that game
17:06both concerning the goals
17:07in fact
17:07and the biggest was
17:08that penalty incident
17:09was it inside
17:10or outside the area.
17:11Portsmouth claimed
17:12quite adamantly
17:13that it was outside.
17:14So let's clear that one up
17:15as Mark Penfold
17:16plays the long ball forward
17:17here for George Hope.
17:18Paul Wendt
17:19is the Portsmouth defender
17:20but watch the feet now
17:22of George Hope
17:23as he comes towards
17:24that penalty area
17:24past Paul Wendt.
17:26He's challenged there
17:27by Cahill
17:28but as you can see
17:29as Paul Cahill
17:30brings him down
17:31George Hope is clearly
17:32one yard inside the area.
17:34A very good decision indeed
17:35by the referee
17:36Alfred Gray from Yarmouth.
17:38But what about
17:39the Portsmouth equaliser?
17:40After the game
17:41the Charlton manager
17:42Andy Nelson
17:42suggested that there
17:43might even have been
17:44handball in the middle
17:45of the field
17:46as Portsmouth
17:46set up their attack.
17:48Let's look at that one
17:48again now
17:49and the man to watch out for
17:50is Chris Lawler
17:51the Portsmouth number two
17:52in white there.
17:53As the ball is played here
17:55it clearly hits him
17:56on the arm there
17:57but whether it was
17:58an intentional
17:59handball or not
18:00that really is for you
18:01to decide.
18:02The referee decided
18:02that it wasn't.
18:04As you can see
18:04it now leads up
18:05to this late equaliser
18:06for Portsmouth
18:07as Phil Roberts
18:08plays the long ball
18:09there towards George Graham
18:11getting up very well indeed
18:12and what a delicate
18:13piece of skill here
18:14from Norman Piper
18:15who had a really good
18:16game for Portsmouth
18:17there tucking it in
18:18for the equaliser.
18:19And the winners
18:20of that Portsmouth
18:20Charlton replay of course
18:22are away to the winners
18:23of the Wolves
18:24which replay in the next round.
18:26At which point
18:26we're going to take
18:27a short break
18:27but after it
18:28more cup tie action
18:29as Derby faced Liverpool
18:30and then the big one
18:31Leeds United
18:32against Crystal Palace
18:33with David Swindlehurst
18:34and Malcolm Allison
18:35we'll be right back
18:36with you.
18:44Welcome back
18:45and now our second cup
18:46tie on the programme today
18:47and it's one of those
18:48blockbusters
18:48between Derby County
18:49and Liverpool.
18:51It was at the baseball ground
18:52in front of a packed house
18:53of 38,000.
18:55The match was covered
18:56by ATV.
18:56The commentators
18:57Hugh Johns
18:57Derby County
18:58are in white.
19:01Riyadh attacking
19:01now it's Lee
19:02his first chance.
19:04Riyadh
19:04Lee
19:06and George
19:08oh that was beautiful
19:10goalkeeping
19:10by Clemens
19:11he rode his luck.
19:13Twice he gets a pat
19:14then from Charlie George.
19:17Twice he rode his luck
19:18twice he guessed
19:19and twice he guessed right.
19:22Here's a Derby
19:23ball
19:24trying to prevent Liverpool
19:25making any progress
19:27with this free kick.
19:33Keegan
19:33wide
19:35for Neil
19:36to chip across.
19:39Now he's got to be positive.
19:41Toshak was in
19:41and Keegan is there.
19:44That was
19:45very good cover
19:46by Derby.
19:50As Keegan
19:51was presented
19:52with a chance then
19:53first Thomas
19:54and then Moseley
19:55prevented
19:56Liverpool taking
19:57the lead then
19:57quite definitely.
20:00Kennedy
20:00Kennedy
20:03getting a gift return
20:04from Thomas
20:05and Toshak
20:05starts to run
20:06and Karnan to cover.
20:08Rod Thomas
20:09will be gone
20:14giving this ball away
20:16more often than they
20:16should.
20:17Powell
20:17scheming back
20:18against Keegan
20:18and he goes
20:19and referee
20:21Wallace
20:21says dive.
20:24So like a submarine
20:25captain
20:25dive dive dive
20:26I will get
20:27no foul for that.
20:31Well as Keegan
20:32went in there
20:33tackle comes
20:34chucked in
20:34in
20:35referee Wallace
20:36says that was a dive.
20:40Kevin Keegan
20:40still can't believe
20:41that certainly
20:42won a groove
20:43now.
20:45Hughes then
20:46the free kick
20:46and Kennedy
20:57Powell knocks it up
20:59challenge again
21:00against Keegan.
21:02Nice little ball
21:03George for Lee
21:04and he is away
21:05from Hughes
21:06he fell down
21:06a chance for Lee.
21:10Well really
21:11Franny Lee
21:12made a bit of a
21:13mess of that.
21:14I think it was
21:15almost as though
21:15he caught himself
21:16in two vines
21:17as to chip it over
21:18Clements
21:19will try and
21:20swerve in past him.
21:23Clements
21:23we've got to give
21:24credit to there
21:24who've come out
21:25all starting as Hughes
21:26trips over his own
21:28legs almost
21:28in the centre circle.
21:29Lee alone
21:30to challenge
21:31against Clements
21:32scoring chance
21:34for Franny Lee
21:35a man of his
21:35experience
21:36and he missed it.
21:38Highway chasing
21:39after it
21:39the ball goes out
21:41Mosley's got to
21:44kick it away
21:45and if the ball
21:46goes out
21:47Derby are bringing
21:49up Leighton James
21:50Leighton James

26:10Taylor.
26:12Tackle by Roros.
26:14Play on, down he goes.
26:17This time the free kick's rewarded to Palace, about five yards outside the area.
26:21And another free kick to Crystal Palace in a dangerous position.
26:32They've been getting the corners and they've been getting the free kicks.
26:35And they've been creasing their game together much better than Leeds.
26:44Peter Taylor's clip.
26:46It had to happen sooner or later.
26:51Beautifully faced by Peter Taylor.
26:57The goal scorer was Swindlehurst.
27:00David Swindlehurst, number 10.
27:04Clicked on by Taylor to Hinchel Ward.
27:06Inside to Swindlehurst.
27:07Good move.
27:08Swindlehurst running well.
27:11Oh, Tarby palming it out.
27:12And it's lucky for him that there wasn't a Palace forward following up.
27:16Whittle had gone past him.
27:17But it's Palace who really looks so dangerous.
27:21Lot of love.
27:26Jumped.
27:28Dummy well sold by Jeffries.

33:30McKenzie over the top
33:38here's the corner
33:46McKenzie gets up well
33:48but puts it over the top
33:49straight back by Evans
33:53and bouncing awkwardly for Harvey
33:57had to punch it
33:57Hinchelwood
33:58Harvey's off his line
33:59that hit mainly
34:01lucky for Leeds
34:02Dremler
34:04Lorimer

34:16Maneley was up
34:33Yorath, off the line by Wall.
34:41The corner.
34:44Madeley got up, headed in by Yorath and Wall's clearance.
34:49Sherry.
34:52To a lot of them out.
34:53The corner goes off.
35:02The corner goes off.
35:19Jeffery's taking that, it can't be weighted, Hunters in.
35:22The action already.
35:24The crowd cheering as if they believe single-handedly can save them.
35:30Good ball to Lonnema.
35:35Mackenzie, Sherry's up there.
35:38Corner.
35:40Leeds getting ready for their last throw of the dice.
35:44Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
35:54Madeley.
35:56Behind off a defender.
36:05Madeley got up to this.
36:06Cannon for Phallos
36:14Whittle
36:18Just one minute of normal time remaining
36:25Time running out for the cup favourites
36:28Jeffries
36:34Jumps
36:40Taylor
36:42Frank Gray going strike to strike with him
36:47But Taylor still has possession
36:48What a cheeky move by Taylor
36:57Because Frank Gray
36:58Whittle
36:59And Maidley got there
37:01Taylor again
37:02A present for the stand
37:03They got it time for injury now
37:18They got it time for injury now
37:30Callas within a couple of minutes or so
37:41Of yet another of those tough up tricks
37:43That his job leads over the years
37:45That's Hinchelwood
37:50Frank Gray to Harvey
37:54Frank Gray is needing a last
38:03Desperate gallop
38:05Not coming that way
38:08Not coming that way
38:08Let's jump
38:08Maidley
38:10Joris
38:11Rini
38:12Up for Mackenzie
38:16Cherry
38:17Clark getting up
38:21But again the Palace defence getting away
38:24Chatterton
38:25Chatterton to Taylor
38:26Hunter
38:31Chatterton up
38:36Taylor
38:37Inside Hunter's attempted tackle
38:40Chatterton to Taylor
38:41To Turnball from Swindlehurst
38:45Taylor so cheeky
38:48So impudent
38:49Inside the area
38:50And still going
38:53But finally Gray gets it away
38:54Out to Lorimer
38:55Inside injury time
39:04Mackenzie
39:07A couple of minutes of injury time
39:09Now Maidley
39:10The deflected ball
39:12Through to Hammond
39:14Mr Burns knows his whistle
39:24Crystal Palace have pulled up the upset
39:27Their players run to the end of the ground
39:30The goal scorer David Swindlehurst
39:32There the Palace supporters congregate
39:35And yet again Legion I did
39:36Have been defeated surprisingly
39:39In a cup try they were expected to win
39:42But deservedly so
39:44The palm deservedly going to Palace
39:47Who played fine football
39:49Beautiful attacking football
39:51Composed defence
39:52And on the afternoon
39:54Undoubtedly the better side
39:56And here with us
39:58The man who scored that headline making goal
40:00David Swindlehurst
40:01And here too the Crystal Palace manager
40:03Malcolm Addison
40:03Let's come to you first of all Malcolm
40:05Even on the edited highlights there
40:06You look to be all over them
40:07Yes
40:08I felt that
40:10We were running better than they were
40:13And we were passing better than they were
40:14And I felt overall that we definitely deserved to win
40:17There was a lot of talk about a secret plan to disrupt Leeds
40:20Briefly what was that?
40:22All we decided to do was to play with a sweeper
40:25And four markers at the back
40:27Allowing them to break whenever they could
40:29And so it became a competition between their strikers
40:32And Lorimer and Gray
40:34And our defenders
40:35And we outplayed them
40:37And we outran them
40:37What did it prove to you though over 90 minutes?
40:41It proved that
40:41That this team
40:44Crystal Palace
40:44You know
40:45Can compete with any team in England now
40:47I knew
40:48Previously that they were a good side
40:50By the great results they've had
40:51At places like Wrexham
40:53Where I know that
40:54First division teams that go there
40:55Will have a job to beat them by one goal
40:57And it was just a matter of playing
40:59On a big ground
41:00On a big occasion
41:01And seeing whether they could stand up to the pressure
41:03Do the players feel that as well David?
41:06Yeah I think so
41:07Because you in fact
41:09Scored the winning goal
41:11And yet I know from what I've heard from Malcolm in the past
41:14That you were fairly tense as a young player
41:16And that was a bit of a problem for you
41:17And I would have thought
41:18It would have been a bit of an ordeal for you yesterday
41:20Yeah I used to be very tense
41:23I used to create all my own problems
41:25But yesterday it worked in the opposite way for me
41:30I went out and I looked at the pitch before the game
41:33And I just felt great you know
41:35And that was the case with most of the players
41:38They all felt that
41:39Yeah
41:39Fairly relaxed
41:40What did Malcolm in fact say to you before you went out?
41:42What was his last instructions?
41:44Go out and play and enjoy yourself
41:45Don't feel sorry for yourself at the end of the game
41:50You certainly didn't do that
41:52We didn't, no
41:53Do you want to see that goal again?
41:54Love to
41:55Let's have a look at that David Swindlehurst goal then
41:58Tell us about it Malcolm
41:59Peter Taylor free kick
42:01You see Peter Taylor
42:02He flights the ball over the top of the three man wall there
42:06And you see Ian Evans come with Clark
42:08Trying to mark him
42:09Mainly in between David and Ian Evans
42:13And David made a run around the back of him
42:16Run on the blind side
42:17It's a free kick that we
42:19One of the free kicks that we do
42:20And they were so aware of Ian Evans
42:23That they left David unmarked
42:25And we thought this might happen
42:27And we thought this might happen
42:27I think the other thing that was so impressive about you yesterday David
42:30Was your shooting power
42:31We caught a glimpse a bit earlier there
42:33Of a tremendous, almost a Lorimer shot
42:35That you made
42:37Yeah well we've been practicing this all week
42:40He's been Lorimer
42:42With what in mind
42:45With what in mind
42:48Just to get Paul Hammond used to shots from long range
42:52And hitting them as hard as I could at him
42:54So he can hold them and things like this
42:57And Malcolm thought it would be a good idea
42:59If we could try and use it in our favour
43:00Yes
43:00It very nearly worked in your favour
43:02To superb effect
43:03Just tell us about this one now
43:04You're taking this
43:05You're a good way out aren't you
43:07Yeah well Martin Hidgewood was standing on the ball here
43:09And I told him to get out of the way
43:10I just wanted a straight crack at it
43:12And Duncan McKenzie
43:13I saw him out of the corner of the aisle
43:14And I said
43:14I just made up my mind
43:16I wasn't going to be put off or anything
43:17And I put a little bit of bend on it
43:19I ran out of the wall
43:20Do you feel that this is going to lift the players now
43:23To make you as certain as anybody can be
43:25For promotion now?
43:27I think it must do
43:28You know we've beaten the best team in the country
43:31We said we were a good team before we went there
43:34And we've gone out and proved it now
43:36So it has to help us really
43:39What about Chelsea now?
43:42I think it's the best draw we could have had really
43:45It's like a home draw
43:47You know we'll have 25,000 people there
43:49Or maybe 30,000
43:50And it's a great playing area
43:52You know so it's really like a home draw
43:55What's it done to you personally
43:57I mean it's been a marvellous weekend
43:58And I've seen you quoted as saying
43:59It's one of the greatest days in your career Malcolm
44:02And you've taken a hell of a lot of knocks
44:03Over the last few years
44:04Does this sort of ram criticism down people's throats do you think?
44:08Yes you see a football team is
44:11A football club is a very very difficult thing to handle
44:15And especially when you've got to start right from rock bottom
44:18Where you know I felt it was a very badly run club
44:21And it takes time
44:23And that time is a killer
44:24And when it starts to come right
44:27You know and you see one or two things come out
44:29And like yesterday was sort of the crowning glory
44:31Two weeks ago I saw our youth team
44:34Be it Arsenal youth team
44:35And I saw some 15, 16 year olds
44:37Who couldn't really play
44:38And yesterday I saw some 22 year olds
44:41Who couldn't really play
44:41So it's really beautiful
44:43You've convinced yourself
44:44You're on the right lines
44:45If you've ever had any doubts then
44:46Yes
44:47I've got a great staff
44:49You know
44:49Tremendous people working around me
44:51And Terry's done a fantastic
44:53Terry Vendor's done a fantastic job
44:54And the players
44:55You know they're a great group of players
44:57They're probably
44:57The best group of players I've ever had
44:59You know
45:00As far as wanting to work for each other
45:02And so it makes it a really happy thing
45:04Not a bad old hat you're getting to know
45:06People are getting to know pretty well
45:08What's the story behind that?
45:10Actually when we were going to Scarborough
45:12You know I said to Terry
45:13We'll have a laugh at this hat
45:14I said to
45:15And we got to crew station
45:16We were changing
45:17And so I had it in a bag
45:19And I brought it up
45:19This brown bag
45:20And I put it on
45:21And all the lads went
45:22Oh you're due for us baby
45:23Like good style
45:26Just five seconds left Malcolm
45:28Do you really believe
45:29That Palace can win the Cup?
45:31Yes of course I do
45:32I mean
45:33You only have to win six games
45:35To win the FA Cup
45:35One we had to play eight
45:36You know
45:37Because we had to come in the first round
45:38But it's not difficult
45:40David do you
45:41Do the players share that belief?
45:43All the way
45:43All the way
45:44All the way
45:45Well it will be interesting to see
45:46Malcolm
45:47David
45:48Congratulations and many thanks
45:49Thanks a lot
45:50Cheers
45:50That's it then
45:52A day I'm sure all Palace fans are going to remember
45:54Let's leave you today
45:55With three goals
45:56And indeed that they all meant
45:58More than usual
45:58In these days
45:59Of financial hardship in football
46:01They meant a profitable replay
46:02For Portsmouth
46:03Another big cup gate for Derby
