00:01I'm Jim McDonald. Let's go exploring!
00:05And I'm on an extraordinary transglobal trip of a lifetime.
00:09Oh wow, look!
00:10From pole to pole.
00:12It is quite brutal here, I'm not gonna lie.
00:15I just love seeing different places, different cultures, different ways of life.
00:21Whoa, look at this!
00:23I'm being invited in to spend a little bit of time with some special people along the way.
00:29That is such a different taste.
00:31And a very good morning to you.
00:34I've already traveled halfway around the world.
00:37It is weird going from the wilderness of the Antarctica.
00:41What the hell are we doing out here?
00:44Down the islands of South America.
00:47But it's not next day delivery here.
00:49I'm finishing in Rio.
00:51Oh my God, you actually feel like you're flying.
00:54I am so blessed to have been able to make this journey.
00:58It's wonderful.
00:59Oh, that's lovely.
01:00And I can't wait for my next big adventure.
01:05Bella Italia!
01:07Bellissimo!
01:08Mwah!
01:09After the wonders of Antarctica and the beauty of South America, on this leg of my pole to
01:23pole journey, I'm in the bed.
01:25I've flown to Athens in Greece to meet my new yacht, Emerald Saqqara.
01:30I'll head through the Corinth Canal to reach Italy.
01:34I'll explore the port town of Gallipoli, in the south.
01:38The islands of Sicily and Capri and finally sail to Sorrento, the gateway to the Amalfi coast.
01:49The journey begins with some nifty nautical navigation.
01:52So this is the little shortcut which takes us from Greece on the way to Italy.
02:00I can't believe we're going to get through that little...
02:03See that gap there?
02:05It's like a B road.
02:06It's like we're on the M62.
02:08We're going to turn off onto a B road and we're going to make a shortcut to M1.
02:13You have to get up early to do this, but it's worth it.
02:23And everybody's up, everybody's in the same boat
02:26and we're all here to watch this passing through the Corinth Canal.
02:32Exciting!
02:37At less than 25 metres wide, it's one of the world's narrowest canals navigable by ships.
02:44My yacht, at 16 metres wide, is carefully guided through by the Canal pilots.
02:52Their vital local knowledge ensures safe passage for around 11,000 ships a year.
02:59This little bit here can cut out over 400 miles.
03:04I mean, that's a pretty good shortcut, isn't it?
03:08While the idea was hatched in the 7th century BC,
03:11the four-mile man-made channel wasn't completed until 1893.
03:17And it took the invention of dynamite to get the job done.
03:24Morning.
03:25Now, it's Sunday morning and it's really early, and if I lived there, I wouldn't be happy if that went off this time every Sunday. Can you imagine that?
03:35Can you imagine that?
03:40Here we go.
03:44It was very, very narrow.
03:45Thought, one, we're never going to get through that.
03:47And I also thought, we're going uphill.
03:50Because it was an optical illusion of the ship going up.
03:56Isn't it amazing, this?
04:01You feel like you could touch the sides. Thankfully, you can't.
04:12But it looks as if you can.
04:17The rock walls rise up to around 90 metres above sea level.
04:21Just wish you'd step back from the edge.
04:29I love the ship this size, because everybody gets to know each other in the bar usually.
04:34And then you sort of all get up at the same time, and you all experience the same things.
04:40And then you talk about it in the bar later, and it's just great.
04:43It's just great. It's just great.
04:49For me and the other 99 guests on board, the tricky manoeuvre's been super smooth.
04:54Thanks to Staff Captain Alessandra and the rest of the crew.
04:59This is just incredible, and not many people know about this, do they?
05:03Yes, that's true.
05:04So, for the guests who are, let's say, from the USA or from Australia,
05:08they don't even know about this spot in Europe, and this is kind of unique.
05:12How many times have you done this?
05:15Actually, this is my fifth or sixth time.
05:17Really?
05:18Yeah.
05:19And it's still as exciting?
05:20Even for us, who's going through, like, you know, several times through the year,
05:23but, yeah, it's a unique experience, definitely.
05:25I must admit, that sunshine bouncing off that colour is so flattering.
05:32Yeah, it is.
05:35We don't need beauty lights. We've got nature's beauty lights here, which is very helpful.
05:41It is.
05:42Not for you, darling, you're all right, but for me, it's very helpful.
05:46I sound like I'm chatting him up, and I'm not chatting him up.
05:49I'm flirting terribly with you, I do apologise.
05:51All right, I'm going up on the bridge.
05:53I think I scared him off.
05:58And we're through this 19th century engineering marvel, and in under an hour.
06:04I'm always impressed when things work, and the Greeks obviously did this man-made, and that's a feat of genius.
06:18400 and odd miles it's cut out.
06:21Whoever came up with that deserves a medal.
06:34Next, I sail to Gallipoli.
06:36Hello, and good morning.
06:38To feed my hunger for travel.
06:40I've had many pink prawns, but I've never had a purple prawn.
06:44And go behind the scenes on the ultimate mafia movie in Sicily.
06:48Oh, this is gorgeous.
06:49Look at this place.
06:50Wow.
06:51Oh.
06:52Gallipoli, Gallipoli.
06:53Hello, and good morning.
06:54Safely through the Corinth Canal.
06:55Wow.
06:56Wow.
06:57Wow.
06:58Wow.
06:59Wow.
07:00Wow.
07:01Wow.
07:02Wow.
07:03Wow.
07:04Wow.
07:13Wow.
07:14Wow.
07:15Wow.
07:16Wow.
07:17Wow.
07:18Wow.
07:19Wow.
07:21Wow.
07:22Jesus, always pró不好 that I can see it the sand cleanse,
07:24as well as me through the Corinth Canal the marvelous Mediterranean leg of my pole-to-pole adventure continues north.
07:30So, we have arrived in Italy and look, it looks a bit like Tubermore.
07:35Come on, let's let's be honest here.
07:36All lovely, little coloured houses.
07:39Fishing village.
07:40Typicaly Italian.
07:43It just makes you feel good.
07:46I think we should go and explore.
07:48Come on.
07:50Flanked by the Ionian Sea, Gallipoli sits on the Salento Peninsula in the Puglia region of southern Italy, the bit that looks like the heel of a boot.
08:03I've enlisted a local guide to show me the best bits, and I'm meeting him by the ancient fountain.
08:10Oh, God, you've got to be Andrea.
08:12That's me.
08:13Hello, Andrea.
08:14Welcome, James, to Puglia, the heel of Italy.
08:17As you know, food in Italy is very important, so I brought you the pasticciotto.
08:22It's a typical breakfast pastry from here.
08:25Thank you very much.
08:26Yeah, you can taste it if you want.
08:27I'm going in.
08:31This is gorgeous.
08:33Yeah, it is made with custards and almonds.
08:36Oh, wow.
08:36Yes, exactly.
08:38That is stunning.
08:39That's my favourite pastry.
08:40It's really good.
08:42This is a beautiful place to me.
08:44What is this?
08:45This is the ancient fountain.
08:48Some people believe it was built during the 3rd century by the Greek Empire, but the recent
08:53studies have suggested it was built during the Renaissance era.
08:58Ah.
08:58Gallipoli is a tale of two cities, a modern district on the mainland and the historic old town that
09:06sits on a limestone island, reached by one of the oldest bridges in Italy, the iconic 16th
09:13century Ponte Cittavecchia.
09:15It also has the most important port in the area due to its high-quality fish and seafood.
09:24So is this usually full of fishermen?
09:27Full of fishermen.
09:28Yeah.
09:29Yeah.
09:29They come here every day from the early morning because of the sun.
09:34Right.
09:35Just for mending the air nets for, consequentially, fishing, fishing fish and purple prunes.
09:43Purple prawns?
09:44Purple prawns.
09:45Wow.
09:45And we're going to try them.
09:47Are we?
09:48Yes, of course.
09:49Oh, fantastic.
09:50Purple prawns.
09:51Of course.
09:52I've had many pink prawns.
09:53But I've never had a purple prawn.
09:55On route to the restaurant, I get to explore this beautifully preserved town that oozes character.
10:06I love the fact that you can put your washing out here.
10:09Yes, of course.
10:10That's typical here in Puglia.
10:12Yeah.
10:12Yeah.
10:13You see, this is why I like the old town because it feels traditional.
10:17It feels Italian.
10:19We need to keep preserving the personality of our city, especially in the south of Puglia.
10:25Yeah.
10:25It's gorgeous.
10:28So, Jane, this is the restaurant where we're going to try the purple prawns.
10:32Oh, this is it?
10:33Yes.
10:34Fantastic.
10:34Let's go.
10:36I'm told this is one of the best places to experience the local prawn speciality.
10:42Oh, wow.
10:44Look at this place.
10:45It's beautiful.
10:46And Andreas' good friend, Roberto, has saved me a seat.
10:50Oh, hi.
10:51Hi.
10:51Are you joining us?
10:52Yes.
10:53Nice to meet you.
10:54I'm Jane.
10:54Ciao, ciao.
10:56Ciao.
10:56Ciao.
10:56Ciao.
10:57Well, when in Italy.
10:59This is nice.
11:00So, you're Roberto?
11:02Yes, I'm Roberto.
11:03Great to meet you.
11:05Do you live here?
11:06Yes, I live nearby, nearby.
11:08So, Andrea, he tells you the tales of the two cities, Gallipoli.
11:14Yeah, Gallipoli.
11:14The new one, the old one, the new one, the old one, the new one, the old one, but there
11:18is another aspect to Gallipoli.
11:20In fact, some people call it a gay-lippoli.
11:23Gay-lippoli?
11:24Yes, yes, yes.
11:25As in gay?
11:26Gay-lippoli.
11:26Yes.
11:27It's been an LGBTQ destination for decades because very courageous people back in the
11:3670s and 80s, they just lived their lives without shame, without no hiding.
11:44And sometimes they were attacked, they were insulted, but their courage, their strength
11:52transformed Gallipoli in this city.
11:58That's why this city attracts LGBTQIA community.
12:04So, everyone's welcome here and plenty of prawns to go around.
12:08If, like me, you assumed they'd stay purple once cooked, we'd all be wrong.
12:14So, this is the only place where you can get them cooked like this?
12:19Exactly.
12:19So, it's in olive oil and salt and that's it?
12:22Yes.
12:23I'm going in, okay?
12:25How is it?
12:28Oh.
12:29Oh.
12:32They are delicious.
12:34Okay.
12:36This tastes like the sea.
12:38So, cheers.
12:39Cheers.
12:40Cheers.
12:40Cheers.
12:41Cheers.
12:44Back on board, the drinks keep flowing as I head to the bar to meet fellow guests,
12:52Ru and Paul, to see how they're enjoying the journey so far.
13:00Cheers.
13:01Oh, this is nice.
13:02Oh, cheers.
13:03Cheers.
13:03Oh, happy birthday for next week.
13:06Happy 50th.
13:0821.
13:0821.
13:09Sorry, I've just told everybody your age, haven't I?
13:11I do apologise.
13:13Oh, that is pretty special, that.
13:16Margarita.
13:17Oh, it's got a bit of salt as well because the heat's pretty full on, isn't it?
13:20It is.
13:21I see why you're doing it.
13:23It's medicinal.
13:24It is medicinal.
13:25I keep telling people it's medicinal.
13:27I know.
13:27So, what made you pick this one?
13:29Is it the run?
13:30Is it Greece, Italy, the meds?
13:32When we've kind of chose the Pearl of Italy kind of tour, the history of the places that
13:39you can go to.
13:40Yeah.
13:40And everybody's really friendly.
13:43And this is our first time we've ever cruised, so.
13:45Wait, this is your first cruise?
13:46Yeah.
13:46This is the first one.
13:47Yes, it's our first one, yeah.
13:48This is the first one.
13:49Yeah.
13:49Well, it's always extra special.
13:51It's always extra special.
13:52Your first cruise is like.
13:55Your first love, really.
13:55This is just amazing.
13:56I mean, yeah.
13:57Let's have a drink to that.
13:58Yeah, yeah.
13:59Cheers.
13:59This is the next cruise.
14:01To the next one.
14:01I love that.
14:02I'm heading southwest next, across the Aeonian Sea and along the Seoul of Italy to the
14:14Toa, and the largest island in the Mediterranean, Sicily.
14:26Good morning.
14:27Good morning.
14:28Hi.
14:29Morning.
14:29Morning.
14:30Morning.
14:30My yacht can't dock in Sicily's shallow waters, so I'm nipping over in her tender.
14:38That's gorgeous, isn't it?
14:40She is beautiful.
14:43Look at this day.
14:45Now, I'm not going to say too much about where we're going today, but let me just say, I'm
14:52hoping they make me an offer.
14:54I can't refuse.
14:57Forget Jane.
14:59Just call me the godmother.
15:01The medieval town of Savoka, perched high above the coast, was famously immortalized in Francis
15:08Ford Coppola's classic Godfather trilogy.
15:11As a super fan, I've arranged a private tour.
15:16Hi, are you Jerry?
15:17Oh, hello.
15:18I'm Jane.
15:19Oh, pleased to meet you.
15:20Wow, what a surprise.
15:21What a surprise.
15:22Oh, it's good to see you.
15:24You found the way up here.
15:25I know.
15:26It's gorgeous.
15:26So this is where the godfather happened.
15:29Yeah, this is the destination, the location and the motivation why we have so many people
15:35around here, which was unpredictable until some years ago.
15:39Quite of all this successful presence here, we still have some genuine and natural corner
15:45here where I am very proud to show you.
15:48So really, let's go and discover the hidden side of Savoka.
15:54Perfect.
15:55Let's go then.
15:56Let's go.
15:57The epic gangster film, released in 1972, starred a then-unknown Al Pacino as Michael
16:06Corleone and Marlon Brando as the Godfather.
16:10I remember this scene so well, where Al Pacino was sat here with the guys, and the guy came
16:17out, and it's this very, very spot.
16:19This is the very, very spot.
16:21After the love at first sight, they had a kind of magic, fatal meeting, and then it was
16:27decided this was the place where there was the marriage proposal to Apollonia's father.
16:32Yeah.
16:33So the stones, the table, the trees, and everything around still is breathing of such a fantastic
16:40love story that made the turning point of the whole entire film.
16:44You see how much it is loved?
16:48Everybody has bought into it.
16:50I mean, you see people's faces walking, because it's very, very popular here, let's be honest.
16:55Must have been a big risk for people here to show the mafia like it was.
17:01Very good.
17:02Your question is very sharp, straight to the point, I must say.
17:04So there was a fear at the beginning, but it was just a very superficial kind of suspicious
17:12fear, because at the end of the day, this moment that could represent the risk was the
17:18fact that it was reconverting into an incredible fegundity, prosperity, and richness for all
17:24the floor tourists.
17:25And the genius mind of Franco Coppola and Mario Puzzo writing this plot story of a family, they
17:31had the intuition that this coroner became the coroner of the world.
17:36Iconic scenes were filmed all around the village of Savoca.
17:40The winding narrow roads provided the perfect backdrop to Michael Corleone lying low in Sicily.
17:47To see more, I'll need some wheels.
17:52So is this our transport?
18:02Yes, this is called Ape, Ape Calese.
18:04Nice to meet you.
18:05So please, you're welcome.
18:06This is Giancarlo.
18:08Hi.
18:09And we are boarding Ape Calese with Giancarlo.
18:13Oh, we know how to travel. Here we go. Fantastic. I love this. Okay. Yeah.
18:22Vanti. Vanti. Vanti.
18:31Vamos. Is that right? Vamos? Yes. Andiamo. Andiamo. Andiamo. Andiamo. Andiamo.
18:36Andiamo in Sicilia. Andiamo in Sicilia. Ah. Andiamo in Sicilia.
18:40The streets of Savoca are not only narrow, but very steep.
18:46So the Ape is one of the best ways to get about.
18:50This used to be the mean of transportation for goods, for people.
18:54It replaced the famous Sicilian cart, which was pulled by mule, by donkey, by horses.
19:03Yeah. So this is Ape by Piaggio. Good.
19:07And you can go high steep. Oh, this is gorgeous. Look at this place. Wow.
19:15Here we can see Calabria on the left-hand side. Yeah.
19:18My vintage three-wheeler is an iconic symbol of Sicily.
19:22It's a unique and romantic way to sightsee, if a bit bumpy.
19:27Woo! The lovely houses have been repurbished. Oh, look at that!
19:32This is a happy scene seen here. Yeah.
19:34All in clay. Amazing.
19:38And now we go past by the ancient gate. Thank you.
19:41Which was the... Oh, look at this!
19:44Yes. Yeah. So we go through the gate.
19:47I mean, these views are incredible.
19:50It's a very special view from here. Yeah.
19:51That is breathtaking.
19:58Yeah. The lovely countryside. Oh, wow.
20:01It's very relaxed. Very idyllic.
20:03Yeah. It makes you feel good, doesn't it?
20:05Yes, yes. Simplicity.
20:07Yeah.
20:09My heart lifts up when I behold the rainbow in the sky.
20:12Oh.
20:13The lyrical ballads.
20:15Oh, absolutely. You can see where it comes from.
20:18Yes.
20:19You can see why all the romantic songs are written in Italy.
20:22You know, because... I mean, wow.
20:26Oh, we're here!
20:27Yes, here we are.
20:28Oh, amazing.
20:31Ta-da-da!
20:34The Godfather group is amongst you will recognise the church of San Nicolo
20:38as a setting for Michael and Apollonia's nuptials.
20:42So, this is the famous church.
20:49Yes, and this is the doorstep where the magic moment took place,
20:54the revelation of love.
20:55Jerry, it's like getting married, isn't it?
20:57Yes, he invites you, eh?
20:59Shivering with joy.
21:02I think Italy is very much a traditional country,
21:05and I still think it has a lot of its values,
21:09old-fashioned values.
21:11Da-da-da-da!
21:14The Antarctic and the islands going down
21:18were very much nature, preserving nature.
21:22But then you come down to this leg of the journey,
21:25and it's more tradition.
21:27It's more family.
21:28And everything revolves around that.
21:32It is a type of place that makes you feel that joy,
21:36and you can see it on everybody's faces.
21:39It's amazing.
21:46Still to come, my head is turned in Capri.
21:49I haven't had any romance for a long time.
21:52So maybe the island is all I need.
21:54You had to stay here.
21:56And I go shopping in the footsteps of Jackie Kennedy.
21:59Whatever you like, we're going to make for you.
22:02OK, make me look classy.
22:04OK.
22:04It's near impossible, that.
22:06Near impossible.
22:22It's so Hollywood, is Capri.
22:26It is the most beautiful, beautiful place.
22:32And you do feel a bit special.
22:35OK.
22:36When you're hanging here.
22:37OK.
22:38And then, yeah.
22:38But even sailing in past all the islands,
22:41and seeing the scenery from the sea.
22:46Wow.
22:49Just south of Naples, in the Campania region of Italy,
22:53the island of Capri can't help but attract attention.
22:56I can honestly see why Gracie Fields got here and thought,
23:03I'm staying.
23:05Everything about it.
23:08I mean, everything about it.
23:11It's just beautiful.
23:13I've been looking forward to this.
23:16All of a sudden, the Mediterranean has become extremely popular, and not just for people in Europe, everywhere.
23:30Australians, everywhere, I mean, Americans, because there's nothing quite like it.
23:49Capri wants a retreat for Roman emperors, is now a celebrity hangout.
23:55So, I'm going full jet set with a VIP boat tour, to see the bits beyond the tourist trails.
24:03Hi, Jane.
24:04Hi, Francesca.
24:05Yes.
24:06Woo.
24:06Happy.
24:07Oh, I'm glad you were there, then.
24:08Welcome.
24:09Lovely to meet you.
24:11Lovely to meet you.
24:12How beautiful is this?
24:14Yes, also, today is a very sunny day, so it's perfect for you.
24:18Do you wake up every morning and think, oh, my God.
24:21Every day.
24:22Yeah, and just think.
24:22That is beautiful here.
24:24Once that you come here, you fall in love with the island.
24:26I think you do, you know.
24:27I've been once before, and it's just, it's got like a draw, it's something that draws you in here.
24:34Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
24:35Also, it has this romantic aspect.
24:37Ah, it's romance.
24:39Yes.
24:39We like that.
24:41I haven't had any romance for a long time.
24:43So, maybe the island is all I need.
24:45Yes.
24:46You have to stay here.
24:48I'm definitely up for living, La Dolce Vita.
24:53This magical setting can easily attract well over two and a half million visitors a year.
25:00It's very busy.
25:02There's lots and lots of boats.
25:04Yes, a lot of yachts, too.
25:05Yeah, yachts.
25:05During the summer.
25:07Yeah.
25:07There are especially a lot of them mooring.
25:10Lots of money.
25:11Yes.
25:13Lots of very rich people here.
25:15So, if you're looking for someone rich, come to Capri.
25:17Because there's lots of them.
25:23And also, from here, it's possible to see the Sorrento and Amalfi Coast.
25:28Sorrento is right there.
25:29Yes, Sorrento is there.
25:30The other side, we have the Amalfi Coast.
25:32So, we are very near.
25:33Oh.
25:33Oh.
25:34Just 30 minutes far away to Sorrento.
25:36Oh, amazing.
25:37When you think about that, you've got Capri, Sorrento, and then the Amalfi Coast.
25:43I mean, it's paradise, isn't it?
25:44Yes.
25:46There we have a tiny beach.
25:48Oh, it's teeny.
25:49That one is one of the romantic spots that we have also for the couples today.
25:54That's nice.
25:55Transform a lot.
25:56Yeah.
25:56Yes.
25:57Yes.
25:58Also, from here, it's possible to see.
26:00If you check about the bottom of the sea, you will see a sort of red color between the
26:06rocks and the water.
26:07That one, they have a coral flower.
26:10You wouldn't think coral would be here?
26:13No, not a big one.
26:14Not for this one.
26:15Tiny one.
26:15Yeah.
26:17I will try to show you in this case.
26:20Wow.
26:21They are down there.
26:23Oh, yeah.
26:23So, for example, you see some red dot?
26:26Yes.
26:26Yeah, that one there.
26:27Wow.
26:28That's amazing.
26:30The mild climate, pristine waters, and rich marine ecosystem makes it a popular spot to explore.
26:37You can see people swimming.
26:39Oh, yeah.
26:40To the coast?
26:41Yeah, yes.
26:42Oh, that must be amazing.
26:43It's quite impossible to not enjoy that one day.
26:45Exactly.
26:46This is one day.
26:48One day I wish I brought my swimming costume underneath because everybody's swimming and
26:54it just looks so inviting.
26:58You just literally want to jump off the boat and into that sea.
27:01Oh, maybe later.
27:02We're heading for the famous Fari Leone three iconic limestone stacks, sculpted by centuries
27:17of wind and sea erosion.
27:19The central Fari Leone has a natural arch.
27:23When you pass through the arch, when you pass through the arch, if you kiss.
27:27Oh, I see.
27:28Yes.
27:29Your partner.
27:30Yeah.
27:31In this case.
27:32I'm going to say there's nobody kiss on here, love.
27:33But, you know, sometimes it's a curse.
27:35Depends on the couple.
27:36So, if you kiss going through there, that's it, you're there for life.
27:47Be careful what you wish for.
27:49Yes.
27:49To see glamorous Capri's coastline from the sea and marvel at its natural beauty is a
28:01memory I'll treasure forever.
28:06Francesca, thank you for the most amazing trip.
28:09And thank you to you to come here.
28:11Oh, it's been fun.
28:11I hope to see you again.
28:12I hope so, too.
28:14I'm definitely coming back.
28:15Perfect.
28:16So, I'll give you a call next time.
28:18For better.
28:18Oh, it's gorgeous.
28:20So, for us, as you know, in this case, we had to say arrivederci.
28:24Arrivederci.
28:25Love it.
28:26See, I'm like a native.
28:27I am.
28:42Not only does Capri have some of the world's most stunning scenery, I'm falling in love with
28:47the boutiques, too.
28:51It's a shopper's paradise.
28:53There's every designer shop you could ever wish to see.
28:58If you've got a couple of quid and your money is burning in your pocket, Capri Town is for you.
29:06And I'm starting feet first with fancy footwear.
29:10Oh, shoes.
29:13It was here, these bespoke sandals were made famous by the first lady, Jackie Kennedy Onassis.
29:20Oh, hi.
29:21Hello.
29:21How are you?
29:22I'm very well.
29:23I'm Jane.
29:24Costanza.
29:24Nice to meet you.
29:25Costanza.
29:25Nice to meet you.
29:26Whoa.
29:27One of the most, our most iconic style.
29:31Yeah.
29:31Born by Jacqueline Kennedy.
29:33Well, I've got to get a pair then.
29:34Do you make them on the premises?
29:36Yes.
29:36And how long does it take?
29:38Fifteen minutes.
29:39It's okay.
29:40That's it?
29:41Fifteen minutes?
29:42Yes.
29:42Yes.
29:43So I've got really big feet, Constanza.
29:45Okay.
29:45I really have.
29:46So I'm a size 41, easy.
29:49Size 8, English 8.
29:51We'll try one just to figure out what size you need.
29:54Okay.
29:54And then whatever you like, we're going to make for you.
29:58Okay.
29:58Make me look classy.
29:59Okay.
30:00It's near impossible, that.
30:01Near impossible.
30:01Constanza told me he'd spent his life making sandals for people's feet.
30:11And I just think feet are a bit ugly.
30:13Cinderella.
30:14It's like Cinderella, isn't it?
30:16Woo.
30:17He said that mine weren't ugly compared to some of the feet he'd seen in his life.
30:24That's perfect.
30:25Yeah?
30:25Yes.
30:26So now it's the hardest part of the process is choose what you want.
30:36There's just something about feet that they should be covered up.
30:39Do you think the silver would be better?
30:41I love the silver.
30:42Yeah.
30:43I wear a lot of silver.
30:45Very classic.
30:46And I know we all like to get our feet out, especially in the summer, get your flip-flops
30:51on and things like that.
30:52And when they've got a tan, they look quite nice, don't they?
30:54I mean, the rose gold are lovely, but I'm not always this colour, am I?
31:00But you seem to like my feet, I think.
31:04That sounds wrong, doesn't it?
31:08It's got to be silver, hasn't it?
31:09It's silver.
31:09Thanks to Constanzo's craftsmanship, passed down through generations of shoemakers,
31:21I'll be channelling my inner Jackie O in no time.
31:25Has the shop always been on this street?
31:28Yes.
31:29In this place?
31:29Yes.
31:30Wow.
31:30Same location since 1946.
31:33Wow.
31:33And my grandfather died when I was 15 years old, so everything I know, I learned from my
31:40mother.
31:41All right.
31:42So still working, only a few hours a day, still active.
31:45Oh, she's still doing it?
31:46Yes.
31:47Good for her.
31:47Still active.
31:49You can still feel the family traditions here.
31:53The people I've met have inherited their businesses from their grandparents and are still loving
32:01doing what they do.
32:03I haven't even asked how much they are.
32:06What's that saying?
32:07If you have to ask how much they are, you can't afford them.
32:12When you've learned everything from your grandparents and your parents, and then you put your own
32:18flair on it, I think as it comes down through the generations, it can only flourish and get
32:23better.
32:25And with any luck, the signature K sandal will continue to stand the test of time.
32:30And I'm going to show you the trace of the foot of Jacqueline Kennedy.
32:35It's really historical because it's an original book from 1962.
32:39Oh, my God.
32:41And this is the original trace of the foot of Jackie Kennedy.
32:46Yes.
32:46This is my grandfather wrote Signora Kennedy, Mrs. Kennedy, wife, President America.
32:53That's a big foot.
32:54Yeah, 39 and a half, like a 6'6 and a half, UK size.
32:59Oh, my God.
33:00Mine won't even fit on the page.
33:02No, no, no.
33:03It will fit.
33:04I shall go to the ball.
33:06Well, or the beach at least.
33:08And in style.
33:10They're lovely, aren't they?
33:12Yeah, lovely.
33:14Probably the most expensive sandals I'll ever own, but when in Rome, or Capri, that's my
33:22excuse.
33:23Oh, well, I don't know what to say.
33:27You're welcome.
33:28Bless you.
33:29I love them.
33:30It was nice to meet you.
33:31I hope to see you again soon in Capri.
33:34Bless you.
33:34Thank you so much.
33:35Bye-bye.
33:36Bye-bye.
33:36Oh, I've got my shoes.
33:43Now, look, I love shopping.
33:47I do love shopping, and it is a problem.
33:50But the more, you know, I'm getting older now, and I feel as if I need less in my life.
33:56And then you go somewhere like Capri Town, and all that sensibility goes out the window.
34:04The prime luxury shopping area is the triangle formed by the Piacetta, which is a central square.
34:11Via Camarelli, and via Vittorio e Manuelli.
34:15Oh, nice.
34:18Safe to say I covered a lot of ground on shore leave.
34:21Thank you so much.
34:23Thank you very much.
34:23What a joy.
34:24Arrivederci.
34:26Ciao.
34:27Ciao.
34:28The pedestrian-friendly streets make it easy for this committed shopper.
34:33Time for me and my credit card to head back to my yacht.
34:40So far, I've sailed the Southern Ocean along the coast of Brazil, and even crossed the formidable Drake Passage.
34:46But I've yet to actually dip my toe in the water.
34:52Oh, hello.
34:54I've been out on my balcony, and I'm feeling a little bit...
34:57You know, when you've done a bit too much sun, and my chest has caught it a bit.
35:01So I've got my lip gloss, I've got my key, I've got my sunglasses, and I'm going down to the marina to cool off.
35:10Now I'm in the med.
35:11There's no excuse.
35:13I've been dying for this all day.
35:16Well, it's all happening down here, isn't it?
35:24Well, this is the place to be.
35:26Can I come on?
35:27Okay.
35:28Hi!
35:28You can go like this.
35:29I can't tell you how exhilarating this is.
35:43And the salt is so good for you, apart from me getting in your hands.
35:47That's not good.
35:48But, you know, they say salt water.
35:52I know we're all told to stop eating salt all the time, but...
35:55When you get in the sea, a sea like this, in the med, crystal clear, with friends.
36:03It's the best thing ever.
36:06Oh, yeah.
36:09Where's the bar?
36:16Coming up, I sail into Sorrento.
36:18So this is where all the magic happens for Limoncello.
36:22Yes.
36:22To celebrate the last leg of my Mediterranean adventure.
36:26Oh, I love that sound.
36:40I've sailed into my final port of call in the med, Sorrento, the gateway to the glorious Amalfi coast.
36:47Sorrento is a coastal town in southwestern Italy, in the region of Campania, facing the Bay of Naples on the Sorrentine Peninsula.
36:58This region is famous for its lemons, and my favourite after-dinner tipple, Limoncello.
37:04But I didn't expect to find a lemon grove in the heart of the city, run by Rossella and her family.
37:11So this is where all the magic happens for Limoncello.
37:14Yes, we are just in the centre of the town, and we have a beautiful garden with lemon, orange, and mandarin, too.
37:22Oh, all of those?
37:24Yes, that belong to my family.
37:27The name is Giardini di Cataldo.
37:28Cataldo was my grandfather, and it started to produce all these lemon, orange trees to export.
37:34Right.
37:35Then my father started to make limoncello, too many lemons, so we have to do something with them.
37:41And we do limoncello, marmalade, ice cream, all different things.
37:48To make limoncello, what we do, we just pick lemons, and immediately start, just wash them, and start to peel.
37:56With the simple potato peel, we do everything by hand.
37:58Fantastic.
37:59Have you got some lemons here?
38:01Yes, I'll show you.
38:02Look, what we do.
38:04It's just to cut.
38:07Yeah.
38:09Oh, wow.
38:11And let's smell.
38:15Oh, I wish you could smell that.
38:16That is just totally different.
38:18Oh, it's much fresher, much sweeter.
38:23Oh, that's fabulous.
38:25Thank you for that.
38:26Welcome.
38:28It's the region's warm days, cool nights, fertile soil, and salty sea air that produces the intensely fragrant, world-famous lemons.
38:37I can't wait to try the liqueur.
38:40Limoncello.
38:42Limoncello.
38:43I'd like to try the real limoncello.
38:47Mmm.
38:48Oh, I love that sound.
38:51I love that sound.
38:55Oh.
38:55It looks good.
38:58Prego.
38:59Oh.
39:00I'll taste with you.
39:02It's rude to drink alone, even though it's...
39:06Salute.
39:07Salute.
39:13Oh.
39:15That is...
39:17Wow.
39:20It's wow.
39:21It's wow.
39:21Delicious.
39:22And we taste room temperature.
39:25Right.
39:25To feel better the tasting.
39:27So what is in this?
39:28What ingredients?
39:30The peel of the lemon, alcohol, water, and sugar.
39:35That's it.
39:36That's it.
39:36The colour, the colour, the yellow colour is just from the skin of the lemon.
39:41Wow.
39:43This is getting me very drunk, actually.
39:46I'm feeling up.
39:47Oh, do you see how loud I get when I fold it?
39:52Mmm.
39:52That is the best limoncello I have ever tasted.
39:59Good.
40:00You've got it right, girl.
40:01Yeah.
40:01I think I'll give you a high five on that.
40:03Yeah, absolutely.
40:04I am so glad I made this Mediterranean journey, because it's a whole new world.
40:21Every continent, every country has its own magic.
40:32La Dolce Vita means a sweet life.
40:35And you think, I want more of that.
40:39That's what I've experienced here.
40:42I want to come back and spend a lot more time and learn a bit more about it.
40:47I think if you go to any country with an open heart and embrace it, you will find the magic in it.
40:55And that's what I've done here.
40:56On days like these, when skies are blue and fields are green,
41:14I look around and think about what might have been.
41:22And then I hear sweet music float around my head.
41:33As I recall the many things left unsaid.
41:43It's on days like these that I remember.
41:54Singing songs and drinking wine while your eyes play games with mine.
42:04These days, when skies are blue and fields are green,
42:13La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
42:24Next time, it's the final part of my pole-to-pole journey.
42:34Pass this side. Everyone should carry something to scare the polar bear off.
42:39Will this hat work?
42:41I venture deep into the Arctic wilderness to encounter extraordinary places and people at the top of the world.
42:48Cheers to Robert, the man who changed the North for the last leg of my chip of a lifetime.
42:54Looks like AI, doesn't it?
42:56Yeah.
42:57Or polystyrene.
43:18Thanks.
43:19You're welcome.
43:24Do you see any other's end, talking?
43:26You're welcome.
43:27Hello.
43:28Hi- Mitte.
43:29Hi-
43:40Hi-
