Transcript
00:00We have a true songbird in the studio with us now.
00:08She just wrapped up a tour with Maxwell and her new album, Let Love Rule, dropped September 22nd.
00:13Please welcome Lettucey to Essence Now.
00:15Hey, Lettucey, how are you?
00:17I'm great.
00:18Thank you for having me today.
00:19You look amazing.
00:20All right.
00:21First of all, let's talk about your new video.
00:23The video shows you for your first single is called High.
00:26Yes.
00:26Step down, look to it.
00:27Why did you decide to go in that?
00:28Well, it's actually just a lyric video.
00:30I have a video that's coming out for High, but this one, I wanted, I was inspired by the
00:35Andy Warhol Museum.
00:36I visited an exhibit there that they had where he did screen tests.
00:41So you sit there for three minutes just making faces and doing whatever you want to do.
00:46And I thought, wow, this is a weird exhibit, but I love the way it looks and it felt good,
00:52but people were walking around as you're doing it.
00:55So it was weird.
00:55But I was thinking, wow, I want this for my lyric video instead of doing the same old
01:00thing and let people see my response to the words.
01:04Yeah.
01:05So when is the next, the official video coming out?
01:07I don't have a clue.
01:08I haven't seen it.
01:09I know they're working on making it gorgeous, but the shoot was wonderful.
01:14I'm very excited about it.
01:15Well, we can't wait.
01:16So let's go back a few albums back.
01:18We saw Lettucey Dancing and in that body suit, showing off this body.
01:23Can we see more of that on a new album?
01:25Well, no, not really.
01:27This one is more like a singer-songwriter kind of album, but there are up tempos.
01:32It's beautiful, beautiful writing, and I'm singing my face off of it.
01:36Did you collaborate with anyone?
01:37Yes, I have.
01:38There's John Legend on it.
01:40BJ, the Chicago Kid.
01:42Wow, who else is everyone?
01:44Yeah.
01:44It's so great.
01:45There's a couple of good people on there.
01:46Yeah, great.
01:47I'm excited about the duets that I did.
01:49All right.
01:49And Kirk Franklin.
01:50And Kirk, yes.
01:50We love good Kirk Franklin.
01:52Oh, that's going to be a great combination.
01:54You know, the music industry is changing so much, and a lot of real vocalists like Lettucey
01:58are being relegated to, like, older radio stations and the contemporary market.
02:03What are your thoughts on that?
02:03Do you even care about, quote, the youth market?
02:06Wow, I do.
02:07If you hear my music, if you hear hi, it's very modern, very mixed of old and new,
02:12and I've always been a person that sits right in the middle, all my music.
02:17So if I'm on the radio, it's better than not being on the radio.
02:20Yeah.
02:21So anywhere I can reach is where I reach.
02:23Okay.
02:23I don't have any comment about it.
