00:05Editor at Essence, and I'm pleased and honored to be back for another Music Monday. We really
00:11need this one this week. Life is crazy. It seems like, you know, the news is just so
00:17much, but music is healing. And so we're really happy to have this guest today, Sammy. He
00:22is an R&B singer that you very well know. He's been at this music thing since he was
00:2712 years old, and he's grown up. He's bringing us music that's mature and evolved, and he's
00:33dropping a new project this week. Oh, yes. And he's joining Essence to talk all about
00:37it. So without further ado, I'd love to welcome Sammy. Hey, Sammy, how's it going?
00:44I'm awesome. Thank you for having me today.
00:46Thank you for being here. You look well. How are you feeling?
00:50You know, I've been a little heavy, I'll be honest, you know.
00:52Absolutely.
00:52I think we all feel that way with the craziness that's going on in the world.
00:56But, you know, we're alive, and God is the equalizer, and, you know, we're just going
01:01through our process and dealing with it how we got to deal with it.
01:05Amen. Amen. You know, on that note, I wanted to talk to you more about that, because obviously
01:10we can't deny how crazy a time we're living in. Being Black in America, we're reminded
01:15that our lives are not valued, and that's a really startling thing to have to see every
01:20day on the news. So how are you personally dealing with that right now?
01:23I'm just spending it with my brothers that I love, you know, fellowshipping. You know,
01:29I think between, like, the COVID-19 and then while we're already, like, stuck in the house
01:33for the last three months and suffering, some people financially, of course, people losing
01:37their lives, and now we're watching Blacks get slaughtered and hunted like animals.
01:42I'm not in the best of spirits. I'm just going to be honest, you know what I'm saying?
01:45Absolutely.
01:45I'm a very positive person, and I don't have any answers or solutions to what's been going
01:51on for well over 100 plus years now. So just trying to stay positive and trying to stay
01:56out the way, and I'm drowning myself in music. That's always been my happy place. And trying
02:01to share my gifts as much as possible to the world, too, because I'm here to serve. So I
02:05guess that's my coping mechanism.
02:06Absolutely. And we're delighted that you stopped by Essence today to debut this new project that
02:13you have coming out this week, Such Is Life, dropping June 5th. Music is such an upliftment,
02:20and it's therapeutic, right, in a way. So I want to talk about this album and what really inspired
02:26the music, and what were you going through at the time that you were going through your
02:30creative process?
02:32I had three months to work on Such Is Life, which is a lot of time for me to be able to
02:35work on music. I locked myself in the studio and in my room as I went through the songwriting
02:39process. It was a therapeutic release for me because I was going through a breakup also,
02:45and that's where the mantra and the idiom Such Is Life derived from. It was no problem as far
02:50as there was no infidelity or anything of that nature. My lifestyle wasn't pretty much cohesive
02:55to having her have a peace of mind. The bigger I get, it drove her crazy, you know what I'm
03:02saying? The comments from the women and things of that nature. And I can't force a woman to,
03:06nor do I want to, force a woman to quote unquote deal with me. I want her to enjoy me. So I just
03:12wrote about it. I put it into a song. I put it into an album. It's 12 songs. I got Tank on the
03:17album. My big brother. I have Rotemi on the album. I have BJ Luke Nasty. And I wanted to give something
03:22about love and something about peace and something about hurt and something about pain and all these
03:27emotions that you go through on an emotional rollercoaster when you're in love with somebody.
03:31That's what Such Is Life is. And some things is beyond your control. That's what Such Is Life
03:35means. It is what it is. It didn't work out. We weren't compatible for whatever reason.
03:39I love her. I always got mad love for her and respect and adoration for her. But, you know,
03:43I thought that it would be dope to create a body of work because right now we need music.
03:47We need soul. We need passion. We need compassion. So this album is full of everything that you
03:53say you miss from your 90s R&B or that early 2000s music. This is what this album embodies.
03:58And I'm very proud of the work. I think you should be proud because I got to hear a snippet
04:03of some stuff. And you really went in and you really poured your heart out on this. One thing
04:09I'm wondering, Sammy, is do you think that women can learn more about men and, you know, kind of
04:15get inside your brains a little bit? Because a lot of times when men and women have conversations,
04:20it may feel like you're not getting the full story. Do you think that that's going to come
04:24through in this album?
04:26Yeah, yeah, yeah. For certain. I consider myself very emotional to be a man. You know what I'm
04:31saying? I'm very expressive. I wear my heart on my sleeve. I'm not, I'm unapologetic about it.
04:36I'd rather you know how I feel. I think that's the biggest misconception for black men, especially
04:42like we're deemed weak if we express ourselves. And that's the worst thing ever. The reason why we
04:47explode and the reason why we're so irate is because we've been raised to hold in fear
04:50and tears. That's not it. Cry. Let it out. You know what I'm saying? Talk to somebody.
04:56And that's what I did on this album. I really let it all out. And I feel so much better about
05:00even the breakup. I have peace with it. I'm at, I'm whole in my singleness. And that's what
05:05life's about. And I just want to hopefully transfer that energy that I put into my music and that
05:10I feel and to the listeners and the consumers of the world. Amazing. Um, I think that is
05:16so dope. That vulnerability is so needed. Um, you know, you came on the scene when you
05:21were very young. Uh, you recorded your first single when you were only 12 years old. Um,
05:25and we know and still love that song to this day, but yeah, I like it. That's still about,
05:32but obviously you're grown now and you know, you've had experiences under your belt. Um,
05:38you've come into your own and a lot of that is coming through in the music. So, I mean,
05:43what, um, you know, what's your process like, you know, as far as once you record the music,
05:48you kind of just move on to the next thing or, or, um, do you still kind of heal, you know,
05:53behind the scenes with therapy, journaling? I do a lot, man. I think being quarantined in
05:59has given me a lot of time to do the things that we quote unquote didn't have time to do. So
06:03although such as life is complete, I'm working on a book called good to know, um, that'll be out
06:08prayerfully in the fall. And it's exactly what you just said. It's inviting women into the inside
06:12of a man's mind. Uh, particularly speaking mine. Um, I don't want a woman to think like me and I
06:18don't want to think like a woman. We're genetically not made the same. For instance, women are made to
06:22love. You know what I'm saying? We have to learn to love. Like if I'm so glad I had a mother in my
06:27life because she gave me compassion. She taught me how to be an empath. She taught me how to sometimes,
06:30even if I don't feel like I've done anything wrong, I find that level ground of understanding the
06:36person. So I can cater to that emotion and that feeling. So that's what the book is about. So
06:39I've been working on the book. Um, I started working on my six studio album, which will be
06:42out in December because I have time to create. Uh, and that's been dope because I've been doing
06:47that album with my fans. I kind of go live on IG. I let them watch me write the record. Then when I
06:52record it, I play it for them three or four times and they feel very invested because they have their
06:56little inputs. It was kind of dope. And, uh, I also launched a candle line in February. Um,

07:06album on the pre-order, they get peace and all night. So I've been drowning myself in a vast
07:11array of ways, um, during this quarantine and, and, and post this album completion, such as life. So
07:18I'm quite busy, even though we can't. Yes. Yeah, I know you've been, you've been really working hard
07:24and it shows. And so I want the audience and everyone watching to, um, hear what you've been
07:31working on and the amazing, uh, body of work that's coming this week. Uh, so without further ado,
07:36I would love for you to let us know what you're going to perform today. Um, it's a record. It's
07:40a single called peace. It'll be out on the album. Of course, this Friday, we actually just shot a
07:44visual for it. I can't wait to see it. I think it's going to be a work of art. Um, it's a very,
07:49very deep, um, artsy visual. It's the first time I shot something like this. So I can't wait to see it.
07:54I had my family a part of it, but it's about a record. Um, it's about a man that I fight the
07:58world. You know what I'm saying? I'm black. It's hard enough for me to make it home safely. Uh,
08:03it's pretty much telling the woman that at the end of the day, you know, I just want peace. And I think
08:08everyone can relate to that. And I think to also have peace given to you, you know, you have to give
08:13that woman in your life peace as well, and it'll be reciprocated. Amen to that. Well, I can't wait to hear

14:08Has it created more freedom
14:11To express yourself through the music

15:12I feel like you can learn
15:14From somebody that hurt you

15:17You can forgive them
15:18You don't have to be cool with them

15:20And vibrate on their frequency

16:42In the mirror
16:42And chisel away
16:44At the things
16:44That you don't like

16:45And work on
16:46Actually becoming
16:47A better person

16:50The power to disrupt
16:51Your peace
16:51I don't put my peace
16:53And my happiness
16:53Into a human being
16:55Because if that human being

17:25Not jewelry

17:30Are temporary fixes
17:31So when you put
17:32Your peace
17:33And your happiness
17:33Into like
17:34Things of substance
17:35That's from the spiritual
17:36You'll have this
