00:00President of the Association of Masters Athletics of Trinidad and Tobago, Sheldon Mason, says
00:05as many as seven regional countries took part in the Masters Championships,
00:10with the United States also sending a contingent.
00:13And we are really proud of that achievement and it also brought out a lot of the Masters
00:18who looked well to Trinidad to compete some out of retirement.
00:21And the lanes were full. We had an even bigger crowd than we had in the years gone by.
00:26When the dust settled, he was satisfied with the performances of those who took part.
00:31I believe that all our Masters athletes, especially those local to Trinidad and Tobago, did extremely well.
00:37Even though they may have come in second or in third place in some of their races,
00:41when you look at the grand scheme, I think they are the national champions for Trinidad and Tobago.
00:47He also indicated that some of these athletes are preparing for the World Championships in Korea,
00:52National Open Championships and the U.S. Masters Championships in July.
00:58He says the objective is to show that sportsmanship exists beyond youth
01:02and therefore they will be aiming to win medals at these tournaments.
01:07Mason also gave his selection of the athletes he felt gave a top showing.
01:10For Trinidad, I would want to say Gamma Poussa because he competed in a lot of the male events, right?
01:18In terms of the female athlete, Susanna Joufield, because she's still running and already
01:23she would have run at least four races at 74 years and don't code more on that one.
01:29International athlete would be Dash Newton from Great Britain.
01:34She competed in over 14 events.
01:36So all three of them would be my athletes of the Games itself.
01:41He also gave credit to the athletes who registered personal bests
01:44and rewrote a few national records in the tournament.
01:48Moving forward, he believes that there is need for more support from the government, private sector
01:52and you, the fans.
