00:00My brother like texted me when the Chris Rock thing, he texted me, he's like, yo,
00:05if that ever happens to you, I'm going to jail.
00:10And then one time I did get a phone call from Kanye West.
00:15This is real.
00:15He came to my house in South Carolina and wanted me to play him in a movie.
00:19Wow.
00:20I can truly say I'm a fan of everyone here, which is a thing.
00:23I thought about it for a couple of minutes.
00:25I'm going to make sure of myself.
00:30I'm going to make sure of myself.
00:35I'm going to make sure of myself.
00:40I'm going to make sure of myself.
00:45I'm going to make sure of myself.
00:50Hi, and welcome to the Hollywood Report.
00:55Roundtable Series.
00:56I'm your host, Lacey Rose.
00:57I'm excited to have you all here.
01:00I'm going to start with a question for all of you.
01:02Jake, I think I'm going to quote you here.
01:03I love when somebody does something.
01:05And it feels so great, you go, God damn it.
01:07So I think for all of you.
01:10Who or what was the last thing that made you say, God damn it.
01:15I'll take that question first, and then it's every single day.
01:18Oh, God.
01:20I like Gerard's special.
01:24I thought.
01:25God damn it.
01:26That was pretty cool, man.
01:27Oh, I'm glad I inspired a God damn it.
01:29I like it.
01:30He's like, I don't do stand-up, but I'm actually jealous.
01:35Oh, you could do it.
01:36You could do it.
01:37You're jealous that he got to sit down while he did it.
01:39Yes.
01:40I like the back and forth with the crown.
01:43I was like, I like this.
01:45The new season of 90 Day Fiance makes me feel that way.
01:47You know, like I really, you know, I think I've.
01:50I should have approached my marriage a little differently, you know.
01:52I kind of, I actually hate him.
01:55I'm jealous.
01:56You hate him?
01:56Yeah, I don't like it at all.
01:58It stinks.
01:59Oh.
01:59I don't like it.
02:00Do you guys really enjoy being?
02:02I like feeling jealous because I get fired up.
02:05And if I don't get fired up, I get bored.
02:07So when I see things that I think are great, I'm like, oh, yeah.
02:10I want to keep doing this.
02:11I like to watch things that suck.
02:13It just makes me feel.
02:15I feel like I still have a place.
02:17Yeah.
02:17My book.
02:20Personally.
02:22Paul, what were you going to say?
02:23I was going to say, I told Will.
02:25this earlier, but I hadn't seen the season of MacGruber when he was hosting SNL.
02:29I finally.
02:30I did afterwards.
02:31It's just so like primally funny.
02:34It's just.
02:35It's just so fucking good.
02:37And he's naked in a lot of it.
02:39And so it's like.
02:40And so like, just.
02:45It's just so great.
02:46I don't know.
02:47It just made me like.
02:47I missed that kind of comedy.
02:49That kind of action.
02:50And comedy, especially.
02:52Well, I told Chris Redd while I was.
02:55Chris has been making me laugh a lot.
02:58And.
03:00To show the bus down.
03:02It's like.
03:02It's just so absurd.
03:04And really.
03:05Really funny.
03:05Like.
03:06They give him really, really good.
03:08Storylines.
03:09And just like.
03:10Him slowly realizing that he'd been molested as a child or like.
03:15Him dating a homeless woman.
03:17Like.
03:18Just like.
03:18Really absurd.
03:20Funny.
03:20And Chris like.
03:21Carries it really well.
03:22So.
03:22That.
03:23That's probably like.
03:24Like.
03:25Yeah.
03:25That's.
03:26That's it.
03:26That's it.
03:27Yeah.
03:27That was funny.
03:28I love it.
03:29Jake brought up your.
03:30Special.
03:31And I guess my question is.
03:32What sort of changed in your life.
03:34That.
03:35That made you willing or even eager to sort of share your secrets now.
03:39Yeah.
03:40And yeah.
03:40Well.
03:41There was a lot of like.
03:42I'd gone through a lot of personal.
03:44Uh.
03:45Things in the past couple years.
03:46And.
03:47My stand-up was never really about me.
03:50It was kind of about everything else.
03:51And.
03:53Um.
03:53I.
03:54I just.
03:55Couldn't think of anything else to talk about.
03:57Other than.
03:59Me.
03:59Um.
04:00And uh.
04:00What I was going through.
04:02And I.
04:02I think.
04:02Uh.
04:03Stand-up has space for like.
04:05Working out personal things.
04:07And.
04:07Um.
04:08To me.
04:09The high wire act.
04:10That all of these things are of personal consequence to me.
04:14Uh huh.
04:14You know.
04:14I mean.
04:15The thing that I'm saying.
04:15So.
04:16Like.
04:16It.
04:17It keeps it.
04:17Um.
04:18The passion is true.
04:20I guess.
04:20Like.
04:20The urgency is there.
04:21Because of that.
04:22So.
04:23Like.
04:23That's.
04:24That's.
04:24Really.
04:25What it was like.
04:25As far as making something out of it.
04:27It's just like.
04:27I wanted to do something that had urgency.
04:30And.
04:30I guess at the other end.
04:32Do you feel free?
04:34And.
04:34And.
04:35Is that feeling free?
04:36I mean.
04:36Do I feel free?
04:37Do I feel free is a.
04:38Is a daily question.
04:39You know.
04:40Like that's a.
04:40You got to check on me tomorrow.
04:42How are we today?
04:43I feel good.
04:44You feel good.
04:44I feel really good.
04:45No.
04:45I definitely free are.
04:46I definitely.
04:47You know.
04:48Was hiding.
04:50A very.
04:50You know.
04:52A part of myself.
04:53In part.
04:54Felt like I was hiding.
04:55All of myself.
04:55Uh huh.
04:56So.
04:56Yeah.
04:57I feel a lot freer.
04:58And.
04:58And more.
05:00It's more space to make stuff.
05:02And not.
05:02Yeah.
05:03Is it how you expect.
05:05To feel.
05:06Is it.
05:06Did it land in the way you intended to land.
05:08And then I'm going to open it up to everyone.
05:10I'll give the shortest answer I can to that.
05:12I mean.
05:12It's a personal thing that I made that.
05:15You know.
05:16I'm still working through a lot of it in my actual life.
05:18Right.
05:18So.
05:19Uh.
05:20It's probably the best work of my life.
05:22And it also was probably the saddest I've ever been.
05:24So.
05:25I kind of appreciate the balance.
05:26I actually feel more adult.
05:27And sturdy.
05:28Because of that.
05:28Somehow.
05:29Like just.
05:29Like just.
05:30Like oh yeah I'm happy.
05:31And it's all whatever.
05:32And it's like good.
05:33It evens out.
05:35What I want from it I'm still trying to figure out.
05:38I mean like you know.
05:39Like I'm here.
05:40It's kind of an odd thing to give.
05:41Like even to do press.
05:43And to do things around.
05:44Uh.
05:45I promised my friend I'd stop being like sad on like press doors.
05:48I'd just be like a sad.
05:50Boy just like I'd be like my mama fucking caught like just like whatever.
05:55It's an odd thing to kind of parade and then be like and give me a goddamn Emmy for it.
06:00I feel like it's a odd thing.
06:01But I feel okay with the reaction.
06:04That was your.
06:05That was the shortest answer possible.
06:07That was short.
06:08That was the most.
06:10That was the most concise and least aggressive.
06:12Oh my God.
06:15For the rest of you like how good are you at gauging how the things that you do are gonna land.
06:20I feel like we get to do that every week.
06:23Michael and I.
06:24A third of my schedule.
06:25I'm just making up numbers and figures.
06:29But um.
06:30Yeah I think live live kind of makes it a different type of thing because.
06:35We find out at the same time as the audience you know like and it's also the same with.
06:40Stand up you kind of find out and yeah I think live live kind of.
06:45Makes it a different type of thing because we find out at the same time as the audience.
06:50You know like and it's also the same with stand up you kind of find out in real time.
06:55But if you ever put a project out that you're waiting for you almost forget that.
07:00You did it sometimes or you know I mean like when you're promoted it almost feels like you're not even thinking about it.
07:05You kind of think about the next thing but doing live TV all the time it's like we find out at the same time.
07:10And then it's on to the next thing like an athlete kind of.
07:12Uh huh.
07:12Are you any I mean having done it for a long.
07:15As long as you've done it are you any better at gauging when something is is going to hit.
07:20No I I take the groundhog day theory of you gotta do it over and over and over again.
07:25Until you get it right just do it with different people.
07:27Uh huh.
07:27Like SNL we do dress we do run through.
07:30Dress rehearsal and then by air hopefully we think we have a semblance of how something's going to play.
07:33Uh huh.
07:34And then stand up.
07:35You're touring for a year or two or three before you figure out if a joke is going to work or something.
07:40So it ends up just being doing it over and over again and then somebody's like boy that's really good that you come up.
07:45What's it like yeah two years ago I was very excited at the same time.
07:50Yeah yeah that's how it works.
07:52I'm wrong all the time.
07:55But you just like develop this willingness that you just realize you're wrong and and.
08:00And people hate whatever you do and then then you go.
08:04Or you get to do it.
08:05Do something else you know then somebody else like to you know and you just keep trying I don't know it's you gotta be.
08:10And you're very willing to be wrong I think to do stuff that that that you.
08:15You know it makes the things that that do connect uh even better because.
08:20People don't expect it because you're wrong all the time.
08:22Yeah.
08:23They're speaking from Michael.
08:25But the MacGruber journey is in itself a sort of version of that right because I don't know.
08:30What you sort of anticipated the film version to be and and how that would land.
08:35Maybe I'll stop and ask what you sort of anticipated there.
08:39Well I mean we were wrong.
08:40We were all very excited going into the the movie we were excited by how it turned out and they kind of let us.
08:45Let us take the reins on this thing and Lauren was awesome he just you know.
08:50Surrounded us and protected us and it was uh tough to see the movie.
08:55And we were like bomb financially because that's that's just all you have to go with you don't you don't get to.
09:00You know you don't have a way to gauge it other than that.
09:05Right.
09:05But we were very proud of it it was a good lesson in like if you do something that you.
09:10Like yourself you can you can't control how.
09:15You know how how it does but but you can control how you feel about it and so it's.
09:20Way easier to accept something failing if you are proud of it.
09:25Like it and and so this was the most exciting thing to get to do a TV.
09:30version of it because you're you know we're like you know and and again.
09:35You know I don't think anybody really saw the TV show so it's you know it's kind of.
09:40I mean.
09:41I mean.
09:42I didn't realize the movie.
09:43But I didn't realize the movie failed because like all like.
09:45All my friends love it like it's one of those things that you don't realize.
09:48Like you saying that now.
09:50Is like a shock.
09:51To me.
09:52Like because it only lives.
09:54Amongst my friends.
09:55Is like one of the funniest movies ever.
09:57Yeah.
09:58Well it's a cheap cult status.
09:59Yeah.
10:00In the year six.
10:00In the year six.
10:01It only getsmuعلish.
10:02No.
10:03But even that kind of thing you can't gauge but you just.
10:05,
10:05So getting them to let us do the show was...
10:10was so exciting for us because, like, that was the...
10:15first tangible thing of, like, okay, this thing, we should be...
10:19I don't know.
10:20And if you build houses and you build, like, houses to, like, exact specific...
10:25locations, it's, like, it's not up to you if, like, the person living inside of it...
10:30is happy if the people walking past it, like, think it's a good...
10:35like, I don't know, like, that shouldn't disconnect you from your own...
10:40lots of accomplishment having done the movie, done the TV show...
10:43I don't know.
10:45My therapist said that to me recently.
10:47That's good advice.
10:48That's very good advice.
10:49We're a very good therapist.
10:50Yeah.
10:51I get you by how it feels, because I don't have any read on an audience, so...
10:55I have no idea how it's gonna go.
10:56When people like things or they don't, I don't always agree.
10:59So even if you...
11:00If you do something and people like it, what they like, a lot of times, I'm like,
11:03well, that was my least favorite moment.
11:05But when you're in it, sometimes you know it feels good.
11:08Uh-huh.
11:09And you're like, oh, this...
11:10This is really great right now.
11:11Uh-huh.
11:12And if nobody agrees, like, well, it was still a great...
11:15Tuesday.
11:16Uh-huh.
11:17I like doing that.
11:18That was a great way to...
11:20It's been this morning.
11:21Uh-huh.
11:22I hope they like it, because then I get to keep going.
11:24But if they...
11:25They don't.
11:26I mean, people change so fast.
11:27The world changed.
11:28I'm like, how do you keep up?
11:30Yeah.
11:31Yeah.
11:32With TV, that's the thing, too, is that you...
11:34With a movie, you can...
11:35Create something.
11:36You can sneak into the theater, or you can go to a premiere, and you can see what people's...
11:40reactions are in real time.
11:41And with TV, you know, unless it's in front of a live studio audience...
11:45Yeah.
11:45There's zero understanding of what worked for people or what didn't.
11:48I mean, the most you get is if someone...
11:50Comes up to you on a plane, and tells you the part that they like, or whatever, but...
11:54It is kind of odd.
11:55You kind of make this thing, and then just toss it out there.
11:57Uh-huh.
11:58Yeah.
11:59And it's...
12:00You kind of...
12:00You kind of read the tea leaves, like, if you get an opportunity to do it again, I guess,
12:03is what it sort of ends up being.
12:05And then...
12:05And then the numbers from these streamers are so confusing.
12:07So they're like, well, we're excited about the growth from day 17...
12:10Yeah.
12:10All right.
12:11I guess.
12:12And they're always, like, pasted in an email.
12:15You're like...
12:15What was the other stuff to put out of that email?
12:17Why is it just this one line?
12:19How bad was that?
12:20These are gonna turn into rocking chairs.
12:22Uh-huh.
12:23We sound like so old.
12:25Right now, it's just like...
12:26And these streamers!
12:27Uh-huh.
12:28Uh-huh.
12:29Uh-huh.
12:30The numbers, they don't share them.
12:31I love it.
12:32Tana, what is...
12:35I'm gonna go back to you for a second.
12:36So, W2Stampstones is the third in a series...
12:40Where you are portraying a very, very specific type of sort of a white...
12:45American male.
12:46I think you call them fucked up Don Quixotes.
12:48I think that's...
12:49Yes, yes.
12:50I'm borrowing.
12:50I'm borrowing from you there.
12:51Okay, good.
12:52What sort of continues to fascinate you about...
12:55that type of character and what has sort of changed about what you want to say?
13:00With them?
13:01You know, I think it just comes down to the writing of it.
13:05I think I'm more attracted to it from a writing standpoint than a performance standpoint,
13:09which is just...
13:10There's so many stories that are being told and there's so many...
13:13You know, I don't know, there's all these like...
13:15things that go with a protagonist that I just like sort of taking a story...
13:20that traditionally the bad guy is centered as the main character.
13:25And I just think it...
13:26I don't know.
13:27I think when you write it, it starts to uncover stuff that maybe you wouldn't...
13:30it would be profound if you were just starting with like...
13:32somebody who was noble and you're like going through all this...
13:35the steps that they need.
13:36I think it's kind of more interesting.
13:38Then you use the tricks of what...
13:40people have grown accustomed to from watching...
13:45they should be.
13:46They know what...
13:47like, oh, this is the part where the main character is down.
13:49And when you take some...
13:50somebody who's sort of despicable and then put them through those same paces...
13:53I think it becomes confusing.
13:55for audiences where they're not really sure what they're supposed to feel.
13:58And that to me just, you know, from a writing standpoint...
14:00I feel like it's interesting.
14:01It's fun.
14:02And we don't really know what the hell the response will be.
14:04And so...
14:05I'm so...
14:05I'm glad you...
14:06just to say like truly like a big...
14:08and I think everybody at the table kind of does it.
14:10in comedy...
14:11like...
14:12takes it seriously.
14:13You know, like actually treats it...
14:15human.
14:16And I can truly say I'm a fan of everyone here.
14:20which is a thing.
14:21I thought about it for a couple of minutes.
14:22I was like, let me make sure for myself.
14:24I didn't say it.
14:25first round.
14:26I was like...
14:27No, no.
14:28Absolutely.
14:29Like truly.
14:30No.
14:31Y'all look great.
14:32But...
14:30you are always like...
14:31me and my friend always talk about like how you...
14:34take...
14:35take these men and you humanize them.
14:36You know, like you...
14:37like...
14:38and it's the funniest characters in the world.
14:40because it's always true.
14:41Like you always play.
14:42It's so true.
14:43It's...
14:44I'm...
14:45I'm glad you...
14:45make every decision you make.
14:47That's awesome.
14:48Yeah, it's great.
14:49Danny's characters are always...
14:50people who...
14:51have contempt for the people around them,
14:53but want to be validated by them so bad.
14:55100%.
14:56And that's what's like genius.
14:57For the rest of you, are...
14:59do you see sort of patterns...
15:00in the types of...
15:02characters or roles that you choose to play and...
15:05and do you ever sort of step back and like wonder what that...
15:07maybe says about you?
15:09I had someone describe people I play on SNL...
15:14who wants people who like...
15:15are media obsessed...
15:16Uh-huh.
15:17and like...
15:18are like...
15:19want to control their own like media narrative in some way and...
15:22and that terrified me because...
15:24I was like...
15:25am I like that in real life?
15:26Maybe?
15:27Uh-huh.
15:28But that's...
15:29that's everybody, right?
15:30Yes.
15:31I don't know.
15:32Everybody.
15:33Like...
15:34aren't we all...
15:34like a little...
15:35I don't know.
15:36I'm...
15:37I'm...
15:38I'm maybe the most narcissistic person at this table.
15:39Don't you say that.
15:40That's what that's...
15:41That's what that's...
15:42Don't you say that.
15:43That's what that's...
15:44I'm glaring that you're the most narcissistic person.
15:46Yeah, yeah, yeah.
15:47That's the win.
15:48That's the win.
15:49You got it.
15:50Yeah.
15:51What about the rest of you?
15:52I think probably things...
15:54that I get sent in for...
15:55or like...
15:56it's not even black guy.
15:57It's like that...
15:58it...
15:59it wasn't a black guy.
16:00Now it's just like...
16:02it was...
16:03It was...
16:04someone else and like...
16:05now it's like...
16:06they're thinking...
16:07maybe it's a black guy.
16:08It was like...
16:09You get the rewrite.
16:10Yeah, I get the rewrite.
16:11I'm like the first...
16:12I'm the first wave.
16:13That's amazing.
16:14Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
16:15Like it's more that.
16:16His name is Kobe.
16:17He's really cool.
16:19It's not a cross...
16:20but it can be anything.
16:21Yeah, yeah, yeah.
16:22It's all street smart.
16:23Yeah, street smart.
16:24When you get things sent to you,
16:28is there a certain type...
16:29of character that you find...
16:30you get often?
16:31Whether or not you actually want...
16:32to then play said character?
16:33Yeah, a...
16:34weirdo who's a loser?
16:36Who like...
16:38makes weird life?
16:39And what does that say about you?
16:43Oh, that I'm...
16:44I'm a great actor.
16:45No, I don't know.
16:46I...
16:47You know, the perspective of...
16:49my characters always comes across as a weirdo,
16:51but I don't think those characters are weird.
16:53Because I'm not...
16:54I'm not going to play a character unless I can relate to him.
16:56And I do like to improvise, and I like to meet with the show...
16:59runners, and make the character work for me.
17:01So I don't want to do something if I don't...
17:04if I can't kind of ride with the character.
17:06So in the end...
17:07Mm-hmm.
17:08You know...
17:09they get a little weirder.
17:10It's just what's going to happen.
17:11It's just what's going to happen.
17:12It's just what's going to happen.
17:13Um...
17:14Michael, I've heard you say, and I'm going to quote you,
17:16I think people probably have a different idea of who I am...
17:19than who I actually am.
17:20And I guess the question I have in there is like,
17:23who do...
17:24who do people think you are?
17:25And how important is it for you to try and sort of correct that?
17:28Or is it...
17:29actually sort of freeing to have some distance between who you really are and...
17:34who an audience sort of thinks you are?
17:36Oh, no.
17:37It's a big question.
17:38It's...
17:39I think it's always fun to keep them guessing.
17:43Uh-huh.
17:44Because also like...
17:44who knows who they actually are?
17:46Like if you describe yourself in somebody else's...
17:49who describes you, it's going to be two different answers.
17:50Mm-hmm.
17:51People have to deal with you.
17:52So, you know, I got a lot of...
17:54sometimes...
17:55I may think I'm one way and the audience may seem straight through it.
17:59Mm-hmm.
17:59And I don't even know they see it.
18:00And I'm like, they don't get it.
18:01So, my perspective is always going to be I like.
18:04When we have two different ideas of who we are because we can find out who I actually am.
18:08Little...
18:09little bit closer toward the end of whatever I'm doing.
18:11If that makes sense.
18:12It makes total sense.
18:13It makes total sense.
18:14And Bowen, with you, I've heard Lorne Michaels say everyone wants Bowen as a...
18:19voice of.
18:20And that's a lot of pressure on him.
18:22I'm curious, like how has...
18:24that wait on you and your choices at SNL and also at...
18:29outside of SNL?
18:30I think it weighed on me more in the beginning.
18:32Mm-hmm.
18:33Especially...
18:34because...
18:35um...
18:36there was all this like...
18:38imp...
18:39...
18:39support sort of placed on...
18:40on...
18:41on these things.
18:42Like I...
18:43like I just...
18:44didn't really occur to me that like...
18:45it would be important that like an Asian person was on the shite.
18:49because...
18:50it's...
18:51it's this thing that like people tell you you are.
18:53Mm-hmm.
18:54That's weird.
18:54It's weird, right?
18:55It's weird.
18:56Like...
18:57being at SNL is like...
18:58a uniquely...
18:59crazy experience for everybody who goes there.
19:01There's an individual aspect that's unique about everybody.
19:04journey there and there's also something that like...
19:06everybody has in common too.
19:07Does that make sense?
19:08Oh yeah.
19:09I'm looking at Will.
19:10But um...
19:11but yeah like...
19:12I feel like...
19:13It's very hard to answer SNL.
19:14There's no question when Will Forte is right there.
19:16Will Forte is right there.
19:17Ask him.
19:18No.
19:19No kidding.
19:20But yeah.
19:21I feel like my...
19:22my journey like...
19:23is sort of like...
19:24kind of...
19:25converging nicely with like...
19:27this stream of everyone else's time there.
19:29which is like...
19:30oh you kind of...
19:31you settle into like a liberated place of working
19:33where you just kind of don't think...
19:34about that anymore.
19:35Yeah.
19:36I came in with Fred Armisen and Fred was immediately...
19:39able to just...
19:41enjoy himself on stage and I just...
19:44didn't get to that place...
19:45Uh-huh.
19:46until like season five.
19:47I don't know how you guys...
19:48Where are you guys...
19:49It looks like you guys have so much fun when you're out there...
19:51so I...
19:52you know...
19:53I...
19:54I panic still.
19:54Yeah.
19:55It's...
19:56I think it ends up...
19:57once it's...
19:58I...
19:59I don't know if it's a...
19:59amount of time but it ends up being just...
20:01the gamut of experience of...
20:04I've had the worst shows of my life.
20:06I've had really good shows and been the worst shows of my life.
20:09Once you've kind of had the gamut of the experiences...
20:12then it's kind of like,
20:13well, whatever happened...
20:14we know we're gonna get another show...
20:16or whatever...
20:17and then you can...
20:18panic in the summertime...
20:19you know...
20:20It's my favorite Lana Del Rey song...
20:22Panic in the Summer.
20:23It's my favorite Lana Del Rey song...
20:24panic in the summer.
20:24Yeah.
20:25When you're panicking...
20:26Panicking about what?
20:27What is actually at the sort of root of...
20:29like...
20:30like...
20:31literally...
20:32like...
20:33as much...
20:34like...
20:35is my face gonna look okay...
20:36if it's like...
20:37if I'm locked on...
20:38like...
20:39it's...
20:39it's like...
20:40shallow vanity stuff...
20:41Okay.
20:42on top of like...
20:43can I deliver the joke...
20:44that someone else wrote...
20:44for me...
20:45that like...
20:46someone...
20:47like...
20:48stayed up till 5am...
20:49on Tuesday writing...
20:50like...
20:51it's all...
20:52it's like...
20:53a...
20:54a...
20:55a...
20:56a...
20:57a...
20:58a...
20:59a...
21:00a...
21:01a...
21:02a...
21:03a...
21:04a...
21:05a...
21:06a...
21:07a...
21:08a...
21:09a...
21:10a...
21:11a...
21:12a...
21:13a...
21:16a...
21:17oh!
21:18a...
21:19you...
21:20so...
21:21calm...
21:22cool...
21:23and...
21:24collective...
21:37and like...
21:38it was like...
21:39it was just...
21:40it...
21:42on your mom.
21:43I think you've said...
21:46Cool!
21:47I think you've said that your mom actually sort of lost...
21:52friends over the film version.
21:54So I'm sort of curious how...
21:57How hard did this film bomb?
21:58It wasn't that...
22:00These are friends!
22:02I'm curious how our social circle is handling the TV version.
22:05When the show came back...
22:07Like, I was already proud of the movie, so I didn't, you know...
22:12I guess the way I answered it earlier made it seem like I was seeking validation.
22:17I didn't...
22:18I wasn't...
22:19It was more...
22:20It was for my mom that I was excited.
22:22Because, like, you know, she just goes like, oh, here's my son who...
22:27you know, made this shit on film for the world and...
22:32And then...
22:33And then it...
22:34Like, it wasn't even for anything.
22:35It's just like nobody went and saw it.
22:37So this is just like a smear on the family game, not a financial game.
22:42You know, so like...
22:43And she did actually have friends who...
22:45Because my mom is the most...
22:47Or a wonderful person.
22:48She's like, everyone's gotta go see her.
22:50It's...
22:51I'm telling you.
22:52Well, no, he's...
22:53And, you know...
22:54I'd stick a piece of celery in my butt.
22:56There's all this...
22:57I remember the stuff that, you know, women in their 70s are not super excited to see.
23:02And nobody's in the theater except for your mom's friends.
23:04Yeah, no, that's it.
23:05That's it.
23:06I'm the worst of it.
23:07It was nice for her...
23:08So the TV version has fared better among her friends?
23:11I mean...
23:12No, no, no.
23:13I think she's...
23:14She's better about not telling people about things that I did.
23:17Oh, that's...
23:18That's the takeaway.
23:19But it definitely like...
23:20It's just like...
23:21Will...
23:22Oh, she's...
23:23It's like...
23:24Yeah.
23:25It's like...
23:26Yeah.
23:27That's great.
23:28It's just so great.
23:29It's great.
23:30Yeah.
23:31But it just...
23:32It raises an interest...
23:32Interesting sort of question about like the impact that your work has on your life.
23:37loved ones and like, what kinds of heads up do you give?
23:41Are you...
23:42Often sort of...
23:43Accurate in how it's going to land with...
23:46With your family?
23:47When has it gotten really awkward?
23:50Show business kind of become...
23:51Show business kind of become...
23:52Comes your family because people outside of show business...
23:55It's hard to ask them for advice or...
23:57Talk to them or relate to them in any way about show business.
24:01Right?
24:02So like...
24:02Like if I have a...
24:03Tough question I might ask...
24:04You know...
24:06An older show...
24:07Who are your people?
24:08Than my dad or whatever.
24:09Who's on the short list?
24:10I think like Lauren's on the short list.
24:12I talk to Dave.
24:13I actually talk to Gerard sometimes about stuff like...
24:16You know just as...
24:17Peers kind of...
24:18We're kind of going through a similar thing just...
24:21Just like...
24:22Carrears kind of...
24:23Since we started I would imagine.
24:24Right?
24:25Yeah.
24:26And...
24:27So like...
24:27They thought we were going to hate each other.
24:28They thought yeah.
24:29Cause he was in LA and I was in New York.
24:30And he was like...
24:31You know there's another one.
24:32You know what?
24:35Sure yeah.
24:36He's taller.
24:37Don't talk slow.
24:38I got it.
24:40But uh...
24:42But uh...
24:43No yeah.
24:44So I...
24:45I think like sometimes you'll get like a...
24:46Like you said.
24:47Like you'll get like a...
24:47Like...
24:48Uh...
24:49You know something won't go right or whatever.
24:51For me maybe it's bad.
24:52Bad, bad, bad press.
24:53And uh...
24:54You know my...
24:55My family will react to it.
24:57Like...
24:58Like we in a gang war.
24:59And I'm like no.
25:00You can't fight people on the internet.
25:02Because they said something crazy about me.
25:04That's...
25:05Do they try?
25:06That comes with it.
25:07Sometimes I do a screenshot like...
25:08This is what I said.
25:09Like please don't do that.
25:10You know?
25:11Like...
25:12I'm gonna go...
25:13I'm gonna go meet up.
25:14I'm gonna meet up.
25:15Like when the...
25:16My brother...
25:17It's so funny.
25:18Uh...
25:19My brother like texted me when the...
25:20When the Chris Rock thing.
25:21Uh...
25:22Yeah.
25:22He...
25:23He's like...
25:24If that ever happens to you.
25:25I'm going to jail.
25:26And I'm like...
25:27That's not a joke of fighting Will Smith.
25:29Yeah, yeah, yeah.
25:30You can't do that man.
25:31You gotta...
25:32He likes cotton too.
25:33He's crazy.
25:34You ready?
25:35He's...
25:36Do you call...
25:37And like warn your family of what is in that Minx premiere?
25:41I mean there's...
25:42No.
25:42I don't really talk to the family that much about it.
25:44I did it when I first started my Uncle Ed.
25:47Who's...
25:48You know I kind of based my character off on Minx.
25:49The weird moment was...
25:51It'd be like a holiday.
25:52And then he would have things for me to sign.
25:54But at first it felt really casual.
25:56So he'd be like...
25:57Just...
25:58You know what?
25:59Three signatures.
26:00I'm like...
26:01Well, Eddie's a fan.
26:02And then his girlfriend's taking...
26:02photos.
26:03And I'd be like...
26:06I just sell...
26:07So I don't have the like big family discussions.
26:11I'm not...
26:12I love my family.
26:13I'm really close to my brother.
26:14But we don't talk about...
26:15I'm not looking for their opinion.
26:17It's...
26:18So I don't want to hear...
26:19Like when you were talking about the bomb.
26:20The funny thing about doing a lot of indies...
26:22Cause I...
26:22Like my old man would go to all the movies in Chicago...
26:26And get in a...
26:27And all being like...
26:28You know, it's a good movie.
26:29But nobody was there.
26:30And being like...
26:31It's okay.
26:32He's like...
26:32Just me and my girlfriend.
26:33He'd be like...
26:34Give a whole beer.
26:35He's like...
26:36No one was there.
26:37It was 8pm.
26:37He's like...
26:38I don't know what to tell you man.
26:39Don't go!
26:40Don't call me that...
26:42$14.
26:43It's not coming back to me.
26:44Just wait man.
26:45God bless stream.
26:47I love it.
26:48I love it.
26:49I love it.
26:50I don't want to hear...
26:52It was an empty theater.
26:53It's fine.
26:54I liked it man.
26:55It was fine man.
26:56It's fine.
26:57Gerard, I've heard you say that your skill set as a comedian...
27:00And again, I'm going to quote you here...
27:02So as not to mess anything up.
27:03I'm not afraid and I have a pocket full of matches.
27:06I think you said this relatively...
27:07Recently.
27:08I think I was drinking with Michael.
27:09I think I was drinking with Michael.
27:10A pocket full of matches.
27:11A pocket full of matches.
27:12I guess it was fun.
27:13That sounds like tattoo ideas.
27:17I think I was going to go be passed to a banker.
27:18Yeah, yeah.
27:19A pocket full of matches.
27:20A pocket full of matches.
27:21A pocket full of matches.
27:22Is this your first time?
27:23Where does that come from?
27:24They're loose matches too.
27:25I'm sorry.
27:26I'm sorry.
27:27No, no, no.
27:28I guess...
27:29Where does it come from?
27:31And also like...
27:32Really?
27:33Like never, ever afraid?
27:35Well, no.
27:36No, it's not...
27:37Not being afraid.
27:38It really is just...
27:40A friend of mine said it like...
27:42Having access to fearlessness in moments.
27:45Uh-huh.
27:46Right?
27:47And...
27:47For a reason.
27:48And for a project.
27:49And for whatever you're making.
27:50So like...
27:51Like...
27:52I'm scared all the time.
27:53I'm always scared.
27:54You know?
27:55Like...
27:56But it's like...
27:57Seeing what that is.
27:58Usually I'm...
27:57Attracted to that.
27:58And usually trying to make something...
28:00Out of it.
28:01Like...
28:02Film, TV...
28:02Stand Up.
28:03All these things.
28:04Like all these arts are like...
28:05Built around our emotional...
28:07Turmoil.
28:08Like they can be at least.
28:09So like...
28:10I don't know.
28:11You know.
28:12Like...
28:13Have something...
28:14That I'm afraid of.
28:15It's like fun to run toward that.
28:16And then mates.
28:17Does anyone in your life ever sort of try and hold you back?
28:23If I had someone in my life to hold me...
28:26I wouldn't be...
28:27Throwing matches at you.
28:28But...
28:29Probably.
28:30Yeah.
28:31Like...
28:32No.
28:33Like no.
28:34No one's like holding...
28:35And like...
28:36Then...
28:37My art would just be about them.
28:37Probably.
28:38I don't know.
28:39I'm just like looking for interesting things.
28:40Like...
28:41Kind of try and mind interesting things.
28:42As a...
28:43Like as a performer...
28:44Anyway.
28:45Just like...
28:46It being such an unnatural...
28:47Like...
28:48You're facing the crowd.
28:49The crowd's facing you.
28:50You have a microphone.
28:51They don't know whatever.
28:52Like...
28:53It's already such an unnatural...
28:55Leap to try.
28:58So what you're afraid of...
28:59What most people are afraid of...
29:01You're already doing.
29:02Anyway.
29:03What you're afraid of...
29:04They may not even...
29:05Understand.
29:06I...
29:07Recognize.
29:07I want to say...
29:08What I mean by that...
29:09Like...
29:10In that fear...
29:11Like...
29:12Before stand-up was me...
29:12Versus audience.
29:13Right?
29:14And I was like very...
29:15It was a contentious relationship.
29:16I was like...
29:17Like...
29:18Arguing with them.
29:19And trying to prove something.
29:20And like...
29:21Talking around...
29:22Anything but myself.
29:23Like...
29:24That's...
29:25I think...
29:26What my work...
29:27Really...
29:28Really was.
29:27What I mean by matches...
29:28Is what I was saying earlier about like...
29:30Consequence.
29:31Like...
29:32I think people can...
29:32I think when you look at art...
29:34You can see...
29:35Time and consequence.
29:36Right?
29:37Like...
29:38It's like evil...
29:39Beyonce's...
29:40Dedication to precision...
29:41Or...
29:42Evil...
29:42Risking death...
29:43Going over buses.
29:44Or whatever.
29:45Right?
29:46And like...
29:47Those are...
29:48That's the value...
29:47Johnny Knoxville.
29:48What's that?
29:49I say Johnny Knoxville.
29:50Pardon me.
29:51You let me update my...
29:52It's like...
29:53I think people can see that...
29:55It's like...
29:56I think people can see that...
29:57And they can sense that...
29:58And they can...
29:59I think like...
30:00Audiences can...
30:01Smell fear.
30:02Like...
30:02So...
30:03Yeah.
30:04That's such a good point.
30:05Cause I...
30:06I think like...
30:07To me...
30:07That was like the thing...
30:08To learn about...
30:09Uh...
30:10Especially like in...
30:12In...
30:13In a live setting...
30:14Was that...
30:15The audience will go with you...
30:16They just wanna know...
30:17They're in the hands of a professional.
30:18Uh-huh.
30:19And they don't mind...
30:20Even if you bomb...
30:21Or even if they...
30:22They don't like it...
30:23They just wanna know...
30:24You know what you're doing...
30:25And...
30:26That gives you...
30:27Once you kinda understand...
30:28Those unwritten laws of performance...
30:30Then...
30:31Then it becomes a little bit...
30:32Less dangerous...
30:33You know...
30:34Then the danger becomes...
30:35The thing that you have...
30:37That you wanna say...
30:38That...
30:39You're not gonna say...
30:40Uh-huh.
30:41That's what it becomes...
30:42But I've never...
30:42I feel like...
30:43Cause I feel like there's a lot of like...
30:44Especially in stand-up...
30:45Like there's a lot of guys who...
30:46Kinda pride...
30:47Themselves on...
30:48Being willing to say...
30:49All of the words...
30:50That nobody wants to...
30:51And you're like...
30:52Yeah, you're just an a*****...
30:52That's easy...
30:53You've been saying that...
30:54For your whole life...
30:55That's not scary...
30:56That's scary...
30:57That's not a real thing...
30:58That you don't want anybody to know...
30:59But also the value of that...
31:00Is diminishing...
31:01Like you have to...
31:02A hundred percent...
31:03But you have to be aware of art...
31:04In the time that you're making it...
31:05In the context...
31:06Right?
31:07And if you're doing...
31:07Stand-up...
31:08It's just like...
31:09Just know how much of your job...
31:10Has been like...
31:11Outsourced...
31:12Or spy...
31:13The internet...
31:14Sure...
31:15I've seen somebody...
31:16Lip-sync my joke...
31:17And get more views...
31:17How'd that happen?
31:20How'd that happen?
31:21That's so cool...
31:22That's interesting...
31:23With you...
31:24You often sort of...
31:25Make these jokes about...
31:26Sort of like...
31:27Oh is this the line...
31:28And oh this...
31:29This is gonna be the thing...
31:30That gets me cancelled...
31:31With a sense of like...
31:32That's not actually your fear...
31:34No...
31:35But then I watched...
31:36Your most recent season of that...
31:37Day and Michael Che...
31:38Where you really sort of...
31:39Explore this idea of like...
31:40What it could...
31:41Feel like to...
31:42Be cancelled...
31:43And...
31:44It made me sort of wonder like...
31:45Well wait...
31:46Is...
31:47Is that actually something...
31:48That he ever sort of...
31:49Thinks about and fears?
31:50Like...
31:51Why was that something you want...
31:52To explore?
31:53Well you always think about...
31:54I mean...
31:55You run the gamut of...
31:56Every single emotion...
31:57I think the...
31:58The one thing that...
31:59The one kind of lie that...
32:00We kind of tell each other...
32:01Tell ourselves...
32:02Is that...
32:03We don't...
32:04Feel that...
32:05We feel everything...
32:06You feel the fear...
32:07You feel the...
32:07Confidence...
32:08You feel the anger...
32:09You feel the humor...
32:10All of that shit is like...
32:11You feel...
32:12You run the gamut...
32:13It's just one...
32:14Outweighs the other probably...
32:15So...
32:16You know...
32:17I do think one of the cool...
32:17Things that comedy can do...
32:18Or...
32:19You know...
32:20Joke-telling can do...
32:21And writing can...
32:22Is that...
32:23You can explore...
32:24What it feels like...
32:25In every single avenue...
32:27And just see it...
32:28You know...
32:29We're all...
32:30That kind of connection...
32:31When people watch it...
32:32They understand...
32:33Yeah...
32:32I get that...
32:33I get that...
32:34It's like...
32:35But that's not real...
32:36The cancellation...
32:37The boogeyman doesn't...
32:37It doesn't exist...
32:38And I feel like...
32:39We gotta get over that now...
32:40Like...
32:41I feel like...
32:42We're on the other side of...
32:42That conversation...
32:43Like...
32:44Like...
32:45You know...
32:46If you do something wrong...
32:47In your personal life...
32:48You should go to jail...
32:50Like...
32:51Jail...
32:52Like...
32:53Actual jail...
32:54Like...
32:55Police...
32:56And lawyers...
32:57And judges...
32:58That take you away...
32:59And then...
32:57Like...
32:58Everything else is like...
32:59What are we talking about?
33:00Like...
33:01You made...
33:02If you make art...
33:03And it causes...
33:02Some contention...
33:03Or causes...
33:04I mean...
33:05That's part of it...
33:06But I don't think...
33:07The cancellation...
33:07I think that's just something...
33:08To give like...
33:09Boring people...
33:10Something interesting to talk about...
33:11Like a ghost...
33:12Like a ghost villain...
33:13Uh huh...
33:14It's like...
33:15Like...
33:16Like...
33:17Yeah...
33:18Yeah...
33:19You know who cares...
33:20Nobody hates you...
33:21You're fine...
33:22I also wanna say...
33:23I only unbuttoned this...
33:24Cause you...
33:25You look real sexy...
33:26With the...
33:27The thing...
33:28And I was like...
33:29I didn't know we were doing that...
33:30Yeah...
33:31That's funny to say...
33:32Right after you said...
33:33Cancel culture...
33:34Doesn't exist...
33:35Oh yeah...
33:36Sensually insult this guy...
33:37No...
33:38No...
33:39How's that someone talking about?
33:40No...
33:41No...
33:42You look like me...
33:43You take what you get...
33:44Right here sexy...
33:45I'm taking it...
33:46Thank you...
33:47What are you talking about?
33:48What are you talking about?
33:49Sex God Jake...
33:50What are you talking about?
33:52I like your shirt too...
33:53I think you look...
33:54Thank you...
33:55I think you look very sexy...
33:56Thank you...
33:57It's emulative...
33:57Of...
33:58Hip Hop I grew up with...
33:59That's true...
34:00It is kind of...
34:01It is kind of...
34:02Very Bad Boys...
34:03Yeah...
34:04I love it...
34:05Jake...
34:06I wanna...
34:07You've talked about...
34:07That sort of period...
34:08Earlier in your career...
34:09Where you sort of...
34:10Felt like...
34:11I think I'm borrowing...
34:12Stress...
34:12You used...
34:13You sort of got hoodwinked...
34:14By Hollywood...
34:15In a way...
34:16In that like...
34:17You sort of...
34:17I've had this realization...
34:18Like...
34:19The business isn't necessarily...
34:20As fun as I hoped it would be...
34:22And I'm...
34:22I'm curious...
34:23What was that feeling?
34:24And then...
34:25How did you get to...
34:26The place you are now...
34:27Into...
34:27In terms of...
34:28How you decide...
34:29What you're gonna do...
34:30And what you want...
34:31From it...
34:32These are big questions...
34:33They are...
34:34They are...
34:35I'm going deep...
34:36I thought we were just doing...
34:37No, no, no...
34:38We're going there...
34:39Well...
34:40It's different because...
34:41I was like...
34:42Nine answers for me...
34:44Because I was going to go to those...
34:45And then do some bets...
34:47Well...
34:48It was different because...
34:50I grew up watching TV...
34:51And I loved it...
34:52So...
34:53I wanted to be in TV...
34:54And...
34:55When things weren't going the way I wanted...
34:57To go...
34:58I would watch Cheers...
34:59And go like...
35:00I want to be in that...
35:01And I want to live in that...
35:02Feeling...
35:03That's what I want...
35:04And then when I got out here...
35:05I was like...
35:06Oh...
35:07It's a job...
35:07Like it's a thing...
35:08There's like...
35:09It doesn't always feel the way it is to watch...
35:12And so my big turn for...
35:13You know...
35:14I started off doing commercials...
35:15And improv...
35:16And just grinded...
35:17And you're doing tons of stuff...
35:18That doesn't feel good...
35:19It's not good...
35:20You don't like it...
35:22And then you get the check...
35:23And you're happy...
35:24So...
35:25I'm like...
35:26I need money...
35:27I don't want to do...
35:27Construction...
35:28So I'm doing this for money...
35:29But it's my dream...
35:30You don't do your dream for money...
35:32You need your dream...
35:33Because it's your dream...
35:34Yeah...
35:35So...
35:36Along the way...
35:37What I was able...
35:37To do is...
35:38I saved my money...
35:39So I was able to go...
35:40Well...
35:41I'm just back to doing it for the dream...
35:42So it's got to...
35:43That's what I was saying about audiences...
35:44If it doesn't feel good...
35:46I don't care...
35:47If everyone likes it...
35:48But if it...
35:49If you're in it...
35:50And everybody...
35:51You're like...
35:52Oh...
35:53This is great...
35:52Which I hope they like...
35:53Uh huh...
35:54It's so much more fun...
35:55To be at a table like this...
35:57With you guys...
35:58As opposed to being like...
35:59Nobody likes it...
36:00But like...
36:01I'm...
36:02You're doing it for me...
36:03This is a selfish business...
36:04And what was the thing...
36:05When you got...
36:06Minx...
36:07Where you said like...
36:08Okay...
36:09This I think is going to...
36:10Actually bring me...
36:11So it was the characters...
36:12So I...
36:12I grew up with guys like Doug Renetti...
36:14Those were my uncles...
36:15That was my dad...
36:16And I...
36:17Loved them...
36:18So my dad wasn't around...
36:19When I was growing up...
36:20So I saw all these...
36:21Bigger than life...
36:22Wild characters...
36:23My mother had junk shops growing up...
36:25So I was always selling stuff...
36:26And delivering with...
36:27Random homeless guys...
36:28And...
36:29Their stories were so funny...
36:30And they were so great...
36:31And then all the parts...
36:32I was getting...
36:33Was like...
36:34You know...
36:35Not quite getting the girl...
36:37You know...
36:38And I was like...
36:39You know...
36:40Those are great too...
36:41I'm happy to do them...
36:42But when I saw Doug...
36:43For the first time...
36:44Because I don't like to audition...
36:45Because if you audition...
36:46You have no leverage...
36:47You're fighting...
36:48To get a part of...
36:49Well then if I go...
36:50I'm fighting to get there...
36:51I've got some changes...
36:52They're like...
36:53Well we didn't invite you...
36:54Like...
36:55So I'm like...
36:56Yeah you should've thought about those...
36:57Three tapes ago...
36:58You can't...
36:59And then go...
37:00Here's what I'm not feeling...
37:01Uh huh...
37:02When I saw Doug...
37:03I thought...
37:04Oh shit...
37:05Like...
37:06Finally...
37:07This is a character...
37:08Who I know...
37:07I love these guys...
37:08Danny...
37:09A few years ago...
37:10You picked up...
37:11And you moved...
37:12To Charleston...
37:13I think...
37:14With your whole...
37:15Sort of band...
37:16Of comedy...
37:17Brothers...
37:18And...
37:19I'm curious of how...
37:20Your perspective has...
37:21Has...
37:22Shifted as...
37:23A storyteller...
37:24Having...
37:25Now being in the place...
37:27Where your characters exist...
37:28As opposed to being in the place...
37:29Where the people who hire you...
37:31To write about...
37:32Those characters...
37:33Yeah...
37:34You know what I think it did?
37:35I think it...
37:36It hit...
37:37You know...
37:38I have young kids...
37:37And...
37:38This job takes so much out of you...
37:39You know...
37:40And so...
37:41I felt like I was getting to that zone...
37:42Where I needed some...
37:43Perspective on this thing...
37:44You know...
37:45I needed...
37:46Perspective of like...
37:47How much time are we gonna...
37:48Be around for these kids...
37:47How much time am I gonna be...
37:48Dedicating to this...
37:49And I think...
37:50It was like stressing me out...
37:51And making...
37:52Sort of...
37:53Just get too much...
37:54You know...
37:55I was like...
37:56Thinking about work too much...
37:57I'd...
37:57Drive down the road...
37:58And look at a billboard for something...
37:59And it was kind of like...
38:00Oh god...
38:01I need to be working harder...
38:02I need to do more...
38:03And...
38:04You know...
38:05I think once I moved there...
38:06It just reminded me...
38:07How cool...
38:07Our job is...
38:08That it is something...
38:09That it's just like...
38:10Oh this is...
38:11I'm like...
38:12And I like...
38:13Hanging around with all...
38:12These soccer dads...
38:13That have...
38:14Nothing to do with the entertainment industry...
38:15And they're just like...
38:16Oh you met anybody...
38:17Famous?
38:18Like...
38:19You people...
38:20But...
38:21You know what I think...
38:22I think it put...
38:23For me in context...
38:24It just reminded me...
38:25That...
38:26You know...
38:27What we're doing is just...
38:27Like...
38:28It's seasoning...
38:29It's enhancing people's lives...
38:30It isn't what it's all about...
38:31It isn't...
38:32The end all be all...
38:33Like...
38:34I like when...
38:35I...
38:36You know...
38:37The best kind of feedback...
38:38I feel like I could get from...
38:37Anything I'm working on...
38:38It's just when you hear that like...
38:39Oh yeah...
38:40I had a really shitty week at work...
38:41And I came home and...
38:42Watched your...
38:42And like...
38:43Laughed my ass off with my wife...
38:44Or...
38:45You know...
38:46I just feel like...
38:47It puts it in perspective...
38:47Just kind of at a point...
38:48Where I feel like I needed to reassess...
38:50How I was approaching things...
38:51It happened like...
38:52Just at the right time...
38:53Where it just kind of grounded things...
38:54Yeah...
38:55I love that...
38:56When people approach you guys...
38:57See you on the street...
38:59Like...
39:00What is the thing they...
39:01Often say to you?
39:02Is Colin racist?
39:05No I just write him that way?
39:06Yeah...
39:07How's Pete?
39:08How's Pete?
39:09How's Pete?
39:10How's Pete?
39:12Do you want to do some blow?
39:13That happens at the kids soccer games a lot...
39:15That's awkward...
39:16Yeah...
39:17Yeah...
39:18I get Prince...
39:19I did a scene in New Girl with Prince...
39:20Uh-huh...
39:21And...
39:22Uh...
39:23Prince has a huge reach...
39:24I mean...
39:25Obviously...
39:26I love his music...
39:27But it's...
39:28You know...
39:29Somebody will come up...
39:30And then the one person in the group always goes like...
39:31What was he like?
39:32Yeah...
39:33What is Prince like?
39:34Yeah...
39:35What is Prince like?
39:36So I'm like...
39:37How do you answer that?
39:37Yeah...
39:38What was he like?
39:39He was really weird...
39:40Uh-huh...
39:41He had a whole group of people...
39:42They were all wearing purple...
39:43Uh-huh...
39:44They walked in a single file line...
39:45Nice...
39:46They got to the place...
39:47They were gone...
39:48They all like stood in a room...
39:49He was announced...
39:50Where they're like...
39:51Prince is coming to set...
39:52And...
39:52Everybody got tight...
39:53Where you're like...
39:54Oh...
39:55Then they all walk out...
39:56He wanted to exclusively...
39:57He was talking to Zooey Deschanel...
39:58And he goes like...
39:59I was like...
40:00Right where Dan is...
40:01You guys are here...
40:02I'm like waiting for the moment...
40:02Where I say hi to...
40:03And he goes like...
40:04I'm ready to meet Nick now...
40:05And so...
40:06That was my character...
40:07So I was like...
40:08Jesus...
40:09That's true...
40:10This is Nick...
40:11And I'm like great...
40:12And then once we...
40:12Once we did the scene...
40:14He was a genuinely good actor...
40:15That's great...
40:16And then...
40:17He didn't get up...
40:18So they were like...
40:19Relighting...
40:20Which is about 45 minutes...
40:21And if Prince doesn't get up...
40:22I'm not getting...
40:22But then we like...
40:23Started talking about like...
40:24The Vikings...
40:25So the turn was...
40:26I was like...
40:27You know...
40:28Thanks so much...
40:27For being here...
40:28And the big...
40:29He's like...
40:30Yeah, yeah, yeah...
40:31And then I asked about the sketch...
40:32I'm like...
40:33Is that true?
40:34And he was like...
40:32Kinda...
40:33And then...
40:34I was like...
40:35So you're a big...
40:36Vikings guy?
40:37He was...
40:38And then I talked to the NFC Norm...
40:40And it was normal...
40:41And I was like...
40:42Oh...
40:43He's just the best...
40:44I love it...
40:45I love it...
40:46You at the beginning...
40:47He referenced this idea...
40:48That will...
40:49There's a lot of nudity...
40:50Yes...
40:51Yes...
40:52In the early...
40:53In the early part of the season...
40:54Oh, yeah...
40:55Yeah...
40:56Really...
40:57Matures...
41:00There's also obviously...
41:01In Ming...
41:02You see...
41:03And I'll just say it...
41:04Like you see a lot of penises...
41:05Men's bodies are usually not sort of used...
41:07For titillation...
41:08It's...
41:09It's used for...
41:10Punchlines...
41:11That arguably is...
41:12Is changing...
41:13But like...
41:14I am genuinely curious...
41:15Are you comfortable...
41:16Like...
41:17Do you ever get some...
41:17Self-conscious...
41:18Are you ever like...
41:19Why did I write this in?
41:20Yeah...
41:21Oh, sure...
41:22Sure...
41:22I mean...
41:23But it's...
41:24I don't know if it's the right...
41:26Just if it makes sense...
41:27For the story...
41:28And it seems like it's fun...
41:30You know...
41:31Is there an intimacy core...
41:32Of the matinator...
41:33On...
41:34On Maguver?
41:35For the first time...
41:36Yeah...
41:37We had somebody in the room...
41:37great. And what does that mean for you? How has that changed? Are you more comfortable?
41:42Does it not have any impact at all? I, I, I'm not concerned.
41:47About my own stuff, but I definitely, you know, want to be respectful of everybody on the
41:52set and you realize like, oh, it doesn't just matter if it's like, oh, I don't care.
41:57About it. So it's like, it's, it's making sure that everybody around you is comfortable.
42:02I think it's a very positive step, obviously. And it's great to be on a set where everybody's
42:07respecting everybody else. It's also nice when it's somebody else's responsibility.
42:12I like an intimacy coordinator because if something goes south, it's their fault.
42:17So like, I don't want it to be, if I'm, I mean, but it's.
42:22It's their job. So like, you know, there's a lot of nudity and I'll be around a bunch
42:26of naked.
42:27And if you're spending a 12 hour a day, you start doing bits.
42:29Yup.
42:30And then if there's like somebody you're getting along.
42:32With well, you start doing jokes and you get a little slap happy and you're, I'm about
42:35to go to a zone.
42:36Huh?
42:37And like, could be real. Like, I thought we were buds and I'm really not thinking.
42:42I'm thinking about what I'm saying. I'm goofing around, man.
42:44Uh huh.
42:45And then you'd have somebody walk by and be like, I want.
42:47Yup.
42:48Yup.
42:49That's that.
42:50Yup.
42:51That's that.
42:52Yup.
42:53Yup.
42:54Yup.
42:55Yup.
42:56Yup.
42:52That's it.
42:53We're not even filming.
42:54I don't want to like offend somebody and have this. I'm like, I'm glad you're here.
42:57Uh, I like the intimacy coordinator there for sure because it's also, it's weird to tell
43:02someone.
43:02Like, I just want to see the tip of your dick in the shot.
43:05And that person can help translate that.
43:06You know, you don't.
43:07You don't have to find the verbiage for it.
43:08You know.
43:09He just wants to see the tip of your dick in the shot.
43:12Uh, he's like a man.
43:13Uh.
43:14Uh.
43:15Uh.
43:16Uh.
43:17Yeah, no, that seems fair.
43:20For all of you, who sort of has the...
43:22career, who is someone who has
43:24a career, that you look at and you say
43:25like, wow.
43:27Would love that.
43:28Like, that seems fantastic.
43:31You know, I get to work with...
43:32With Goodman on Gemstones,
43:33I mean, when you kind of like
43:34go through his career,
43:35it's just like pretty awesome.
43:36I mean, he's...
43:37He's done so much.
43:38Yeah, I look at all the choices
43:39he's made through the years.
43:40It's just like, he's like an assassin.
43:42Who's just been lining up
43:43one cool thing after the next
43:45and just keeps moving.
43:46He's great.
43:47I've always err on the side of like,
43:49anybody that like just tours comedy.
43:52For the full year
43:53and they pick projects
43:55that they just like doing or whatever.
43:57To me, it's like the fun career
43:58because it's just the opposite
44:00of what I get to do like at...
44:02You know what I mean?
44:04Like just somebody that's like,
44:05I'm going to take eight months
44:06and figure...
44:07out a set.
44:07I'm like,
44:08what?
44:08How are you doing?
44:09You know, that to me,
44:10like, that's like...
44:12Like always...
44:13Nobody in particular,
44:14but that kind of thing
44:15is kind of cool to me.
44:17I like anyone specific.
44:18I like anyone whose career isn't...
44:22just a desperate pool of bullshit.
44:26Mm-hmm.
44:27So it's like,
44:27and I'm in six things.
44:29It's like, okay.
44:31I was erring it.
44:32Yeah, I was busy, busy, busy.
44:33Yeah, yeah, busy.
44:35We all enjoy your busy...
44:36Yeah.
44:37I was just thinking about this.
44:41I was thinking about...
44:42Nick Offerman,
44:43who's, you know,
44:44does all these awesome things.
44:45And then I was talking to...
44:47the other day about his wood shop
44:48and he just makes these incredible work,
44:50you know,
44:51pieces of furniture.
44:52out of old reclaimed wood
44:54and it's just,
44:55you know,
44:56to go...
44:57Like, God,
44:57I wish I was...
44:58Every Nick Offerman story I hear,
45:00I go,
45:00oh, he's really that.
45:02Oh, yeah.
45:02Oh, he's actually that.
45:04Oh, okay.
45:04Oh, cool.
45:07I feel like that reminds me
45:10that I don't take advantage
45:11of the time that I...
45:12I have, you know,
45:12like, like I...
45:14And I'm...
45:14I think I'm getting better,
45:16better.
45:16I just had a...
45:17baby and so...
45:18Can we show the socks?
45:19Oh, yeah, yeah.
45:20This is an opportunity.
45:21That's my lucky sock.
45:22Oh, my God.
45:25Sorry, I had to.
45:27You know, it's just...
45:28It's, you know,
45:29I'm trying to teach myself
45:30to not just...
45:32do crossword puzzles all day
45:35and she's kind of forced me...
45:37out of that
45:37but I look to, you know,
45:39different role models
45:40like Nick.
45:42What about you, though?
45:44For some reason,
45:45I'm thinking of Keenan.
45:47just because...
45:48I don't...
45:49I don't think I'll stay there
45:50for as long as he has
45:51but...
45:52I think watching him
45:53and his sense of boundaries
45:54is very cool.
45:56Like, I want to get to that.
45:57place someday
45:57where he has the boundaries
45:59very clearly set
46:00but also is like...
46:02warm and generous
46:02and welcoming
46:03and inviting to people
46:04at the same time.
46:06It's an interesting question.
46:07You brought up this idea
46:08of, like,
46:08I don't know how long
46:09I will stay.
46:10You talked, I think...
46:12in the past
46:12about that sort of transition
46:13after SNL
46:15and it's a challenge...
46:17one
46:17and I guess I'm curious
46:18do you feel like
46:21there's stuff you...
46:22you wish you would have known
46:23going into it
46:23that perhaps
46:24would be helpful
46:25for...
46:27you guys at a table
46:27that one day
46:28will make a decision?
46:31Well, I mean...
46:32the main thing is
46:33there's nothing like it.
46:34First year that I left
46:35it was basically...
46:37I think everybody else
46:37was still there
46:38so it was tough
46:40to look at and go
46:40why did I...
46:41I...
46:42chose to leave this place
46:43and I miss it
46:44tremendously
46:45and you're like
46:45what the...
46:46what...
46:47what am I...
46:47you know...
46:47so it's very tough
46:49just, you know...
46:49it'll be very weird
46:51when you eventually...
46:52do decide to go
46:53but it's also
46:54exciting afterwards
46:56it's just...
46:57new stuff
46:58that becomes
46:59your life
47:01and I love
47:02they're not knowing
47:03if I'd ever
47:03get a job again
47:04like I...
47:05you know...
47:06so it was...
47:07it's every single thing
47:08since then
47:09that I've gotten to do
47:10is like
47:10this...
47:12unexpected blessing
47:13you know...
47:14and...
47:14you know...
47:15so...
47:16you know...
47:17you start...
47:18for me...
47:18SNL...
47:19that was what I wanted
47:20to do when I started
47:21you know...
47:21so...
47:22oh...
47:22I got to do that
47:23now I'm...
47:24I didn't really have
47:25dreams after that
47:27you know...
47:27so it's like
47:28alright I did that
47:29you know...
47:30uh...
47:32it brings up
47:33a good question
47:33so what is the
47:34the sort of
47:35dream gig
47:36that like I...
47:37I can retire now
47:38um...
47:39thing for all of you
47:40is it like
47:41the you know...
47:42getting the call
47:42about a Marvel movie
47:43is it getting
47:44a late night show
47:44is it like
47:45what are the things
47:46that like...
47:47really are
47:48sort of at the end
47:50of...
47:50I'm sorry
47:50you said
47:52those two things
47:52and is that all
47:53there is
47:54started playing
47:54in my head
47:55oh my god
47:56Jesus Christ
47:56like that's
47:56it
47:56so...
47:57we're waiting
47:57for a like
47:57Marvel
47:59call
47:59like
48:00oh Jesus
48:01first time
48:02he thought that
48:02he is the goal
48:03right?
48:04I don't know
48:04I'd like to be
48:05Batman
48:06he's like
48:06he's like
48:07I'd be the
48:08laziest Batman
48:09in the fucking world
48:12the Batman's
48:13have recently
48:13been
48:14too much
48:15of a go-getter
48:16do you think
48:16that that
48:17would be
48:17Michael's Batmobile
48:20would be
48:20an Uber plus
48:22I'll be the first
48:23Batman that makes
48:24noise when he
48:25gets out of
48:25the Batmobile
48:27where's he at?
48:30where's he at?
48:32God his car's
48:33too low
48:34no I think
48:37a lot of it's just
48:38like
48:39kind of time
48:40and choices
48:41are
48:42always
48:42seem to be
48:43the further
48:44you go along
48:44that's kind of
48:45what you're looking
48:45for
48:46do I have time
48:47to do shit
48:47that I really
48:48want to do
48:48and do I have
48:50kind of the choices
48:51that I really
48:52you know
48:52the power
48:52to make the choices
48:53that I really
48:54want to make
48:54and then a lot
48:55of times
48:55it's being able
48:56to help
48:57people
48:57that you
48:57really believe
48:58like is there
48:59a place
48:59for
49:00my friends
49:01that I think
49:01are
49:02dope
49:02that I should
49:02get these
49:03opportunities
49:03like that's
49:04it's more of
49:05what you can do
49:07not necessarily
49:07a job
49:08so if there's
49:08a job
49:09that can kind
49:09of give you
49:10that time
49:10or give you
49:11that freedom
49:11or give you
49:12that time
49:12or give you
49:12that power
49:12that's kind
49:12of
49:13what I think
49:14I look for
49:15more so
49:16than
49:17an actual
49:17you know
49:18bucket list
49:18title
49:19I kind of
49:20think
49:20during the
49:20pandemic
49:21when everything
49:22shut down
49:22and I wasn't
49:23sure if our
49:23business was
49:24coming back
49:24it's kind
49:25of similar
49:25to what you're
49:25saying Danny
49:26about like
49:26re-
49:27thinking it
49:27I realized
49:28that I just
49:29want to keep
49:29working
49:29like there's
49:30no retirement
49:31I don't go
49:32golf
49:32you know
49:33I don't know
49:33what I would
49:33do at like
49:3465
49:34I hope
49:35it's really
49:35good projects
49:36uh-huh
49:37might be
49:37one a year
49:38but like
49:39I just
49:40don't want
49:40the thing
49:41to end
49:41I think
49:42there's a
49:42moment
49:42we all
49:42get kicked
49:43off this
49:43ride
49:43and I
49:45just
49:45want
49:45to
49:46stretch
49:46mine
49:47as long
49:47as I can
49:47because it's
49:48a fun
49:49business
49:49I have a
49:50number
49:50yeah
49:51what is it
49:52your number
49:52I'll keep
49:53it to
49:53myself
49:53but that's
49:54my dream
49:54that I have
49:55a number
49:55and I'm
49:56I'm
