00:00I think we had a lot of fun with the fashion and building these characters that way.
00:05And it was fun to get to be like kind of really fashionable.
00:10Because, you know, both of your characters would really care.
00:15So, yeah.
00:16But even more than us, I feel background also has some incredible.
00:20A lot of the comedy is just in the outfits of the people who are coming to the show.
00:23It's really, really wonderful.
00:25So colorful.
00:30Talk to me about the story of deciding to do this movie.
00:33What was the very first?
00:35Well, we got this amazing spec script from James Peterson.
00:40And, you know, out of his weird brain spouted the.
00:45Original concept of the film and this idea, the satire on the artwork.
00:50And I think I really connected to it because it's like, it's just.
00:55You know, four women coming together to do something extremely naughty, but also.
01:00Fun and I've been wanting to do something just about.
01:05Art and the creative process and this was such an interesting story.
01:10Of being able to explore these things, but in a way that, yeah, it was.
01:15Super entertaining and funny.
01:17When you, when you said you wanted to do something about like art.
01:20And the creative process before you got the script, what was it specifically that you were
01:23wanting to like comment on?
01:25At the time, like, were you looking for a little bit of satire or.
01:28Absolutely.
01:29Well.
01:30I think as creatives, you know, um, we're constantly dealing with.
01:35Tension between art and commerce and, you know, intention for.
01:40Intercesses compromise.
01:41And so.
01:42That I've been thinking about that a lot.
01:44And I think.
01:45the art world is really interesting because it's sort of a parallel universe in a way to what we
01:50do but it's even more I think the value like
01:55who who gets to ascribe value to a piece of art is super interesting
02:00and so I've been really interested in the contemporary art world as a sort of metaphor for
02:05how you can talk about art today and what is value is
02:10value in the eye of the holder is it the stories we tell is it the context in which
02:15something is you know framed so there's
02:20are some of the bigger questions that I just been rolling that have been rolling
02:25around my head for a long time and then the script came along and it just felt like ah there it is
02:30Natalie and Jenna what was your at the time of coming to this movie like
02:35what was your experience with the art world or like what had been your interactions like were you
02:40shopping for art ever kind of yeah where where were you when
02:45Kathy sent uh the script to me I was very interested in the art world
02:50but I didn't know that much about it at all and was definitely reading the news
02:55from afar about the Banksy and the you know the famous banana and those
03:00kind of like stunt art world things that make main
03:05mainstream news um and it intrigued me to to learn more for sure and obviously
03:10I go see a lot of art and museums and galleries and stuff just as an appreciator of
03:15of of visual arts um but I didn't know about the market and the whole
03:20kind of commodification of it at all yeah I would say something similar
03:24you
03:25I like to go to museums for you know entertainment purposes or some
03:30something to do or find inspiration somehow but it wasn't a big part of my life at all
03:35um I don't really buy art unless it's like something that I find out of flea or like you know
03:40like an estate sale or something so when the script came in and there's some
03:45vocabulary and things that I was unfamiliar with that I thought okay well before I meet with Kathy
03:50my google searches were so vague I really
03:55had no knowledge uh so it was exciting to also learn about some
04:00something unfamiliar and um still creative
04:04do you
04:05do you know is some of that lingo like embedded into your
04:07no I threw it away instantly
04:10you're like I don't have it anymore
04:11I think I remember the word like assemblage and I couldn't even tell you what it means
04:15you do have a lot of that in the movie like a lot of just
04:18yeah well that each at the beginning
04:20explaining explaining kind of the gallery still burgess it was yeah that
04:25that was the speech that I was like what does this mean and now it's all blurred in the background which is great
04:30and did all three of you go to Art Basel for research or was that just you Natalie or we went
04:35to Art Basel in Paris together
04:36and went to Art Basel Miami alone
04:39yeah we
04:40you were prepping the movie already actually
04:41you were you were about to shoot because it's December
04:44mm-hmm
04:45and um yeah it was it's just this amazing kind of parallel
04:50world that exists that you might not ever get access to because it's so
04:55it is this kind of niche but it's a huge huge niche it's like really
05:00massive industry and really has its like own codes and
05:05um secrets and intrigues and it's it's
05:10really really fascinating and fun
05:11were you shopping at all too or were you just research
05:14I
05:15did actually it was actually quite expensive to get instead of going to art fairs
05:20I was like oh I love that that speaks to me
05:23that's a deal
05:25yeah you can write it off as a creative research yeah
05:29where
05:30um the everyone's look in the movie um was that based off
05:35um
05:35like I'm thinking of Zach Galifianakis especially um was that based off any like particular
05:40person you met during this or just kind of an amalgamation of amalgamation of
05:45of yes it was an amalgamation um of of of different
05:49you
05:50characters um for sure and that was part of the fun of it was I think for all of us
05:55we were able to you know take um people from the art world
06:00or people from you know just the real world I mean you know we wanted this movie
06:05as heightened as it is but to still be a reflection of of now and so
06:10you know I think we had a lot of fun with the with the fashion and and building these characters that way
06:15and um it was it was fun to get to be like kind of really fashionable
06:20in this one because you know both of your characters would really care
06:25so yeah but even more than us I feel background also has some yeah credible
06:30a lot of the comedy is just in the outfits of the people who are coming to the show
06:33it's really really wonderful
06:35wonderful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful so colorful
06:40but also the heightened is the real in this world like it is
06:45really kind of feels like Miami art world mm-hmm yeah a lot of the people
06:50look like people I stand in line at the coffee shop with like on the east side
06:53of LA it's like not that
06:55did you consider keeping the bob oh yeah it was it was
07:00really it was really one of those fun like instant you look in
07:05the mirror and you feel like a different person kind of things was very yeah
07:08Kathy immediately had
07:10this concept I think for the character I mean the tabby shoes were like written
07:13into the script
07:15so so clear and really had to be tough yeah how to find V
07:20again tabby yeah oh is that what they yeah I know she got she got two two
07:25vegan actresses some demands oh and then your shoes were also very specific too
07:30yeah yeah do you still have them where that would happen to those yeah
07:35the weirdest thing about those shoes is they actually were easier to walk in
07:39than you would think so
07:40the challenge was like actually making it look difficult because no matter how
07:43many times I stumble on the script
07:45okay I just landed straight up so that was the it was good
07:50but that was a similar thing where the walk instantly became different or a bit
07:53more upbeat or a bit more just because
07:55the sound was so satisfying you had very different sounds yours were like
07:58cluck cluck cluck cluck cluck cluck
08:00and he was like
08:01and he was like
08:02and the gallery's so like
08:05empty and echoey that it like really it really makes an impact yeah
08:10it's like the cluck cluck cluck cluck's and Devil Wears Prada it comes
08:13through nice what
08:15what was like the were you guys like cracking up a lot on set like was it
08:20or was yeah how was that yeah i mean especially opening days
08:25when zach was there you just let him ramble
08:30it was the most beautiful thing i loved when they weren't doing my coverage personally
08:35but everybody here is naturally just really funny people like divine is
08:40so funny having a conversation with her it's impossible to laugh sterling as well
08:45a menace to shoot with because it's like and we did a lot of long runners and
08:50things like that so we had intensive rehearsals and everyone had to be in a certain place
08:55at a certain time and then you would shoot a scene and he would go and he would
08:58add a facial expression or add a some
09:00thing and it was just killer so this one was actually difficult
09:05in that sense of i don't think i break a lot on set but the dynamics between
09:10you and him and then when daniel came to the picture it was just yeah it was also the art itself
09:15like i feel like i feel like there were a lot of times where we were just like
09:18like
09:20and even this
09:25the main sculpture which i don't want to like spoil but i feel like there were a lot of there was a lot of
09:30like deflay around did someone keep the rice stocking oh you know
09:35i wanted it so bad maybe you need to make it yeah you could probably make it i think it's
09:40literally stocking with rice it is it is we can
09:45we can give you a recipe
09:45um before we run out of time
